Yougotta: We were in "the Noke" on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so I'm sure that the Virginia Museum of Transportation was closed. NS was nearly dormant and had trains stopped adjacent to Shenandoah Avenue so that one couldn't even see the museum collection or what was in the yard. There still appears to be quite a bit of stored power down the middle of the yard near 10th Street.
I lived in Roanoke and was a member of that museum for 30 years; even helped on development of one of the displays inside. My son and his family live in Vinton.
And I'm not ashamed to say that I like fruitcake and "have" to taste some every Christmas season.

I'm finishing up four shifts in a row today and then have four days off. When the new schedule for "17" gets rolling, it looks like I'll be cut back to 8 to 10 shifts a month. So seeing that I was planning on retiring for good this time, it will be a good way to wien myself out of work rather than just quiting cold turkey. Also more time for the LM&E as well.
Hope you all have a great New Years Eve and if you are inclined to have some bubbly, stay home and do it or make sure you have a sober designated driver.

As we approach New Year's Eve, I would like to wish everyone all the best for 2017!
We are entertaining some of Dianne's old high school chums whom she has kept in touch with for more than 40 years! We are not going to do a formal sit-down meal. Instead we will do finger foods so we can browse all night as we wish. The menu will be a bit decadent with filet mignon bites, lobster tails, dolmades with tzatziki, butter chicken spring rolls, a salami and cheese tray with multiple varieties of each, various vegies and dips, a warm cheese dip, avocado salsa with tortia chips, and liqueur filled chocolates and cookies for dessert. Midnight will be observed in the hot tub as usual with champagne.
Boy are we spoiled!!!
Seriously, I hope that everybody has a good time on New Year's Eve, and I hope that those of you who are having a hard time these days can find a way to enjoy the evening too. My thoughts are with you.

Just been a plain rotten day. Tried to pay my wife new health insurances today, they told wife I could not pay by phone. Went to there web site (Blue Cross And Blue Sheild) Would not let me creat a new account becuse they said there is no member with her name! Reason is because she won't be a member till I make the first payment? So how do you make a payment to be come a member? Was on hold for 35 minutes on two phone before I said Ash Pitt this!
Made my house payment to BOS. That never puts a smile on my faces. To top it all off, there was only one teller! Stood 45 minutes to make the payment. Had to take $350.00 out of savings and it is looking pretty thin right now.
YGW If you are talking about the wire on the weight bench up rights, that is wire for a turnout that more than likely will never get done. I use my computer to run the layout using decoder pro. I only use the Digitrax DT 400 when cleaning the engines wheels. Far as the lock tight or plumbers tape (Teflon) I have both. I will take a look at what you sent Friday I hope.

I hate Rust
It has been a week since my recital and here is the report. Like I said earlier, it went better than expected. There were about 35 family members and close friends in attendance. All told it took about 50 minutes. It wasn't perfect, but there were no catastrophic failures, i.e. stopping in the middle of a piece and unable to continue, but there were a number of memory lapses. It is a rather raw experience to do a solo recital—it is just you; there is no backup at all. I am not in a hurry to do it again, but I am not ruling out another one. For the time being I will be content to play in my piano teacher’s studio recitals, me and a dozen children. Here is photographic evidence of the event.
The other high point for the week was hitting my bicycling goal for the year: 3,173 miles. While it may seem like an odd target, it make sense when taken in historical context. Since I started recording my mileage in 1992, I have ridden 108,000 miles.
Nothing on the train front, even though I am midway through my second week of vacation. My three oldest grandkids (8,6,& 4) inhabit the office using mattresses on the floor. (Actually, consume the office is more like it.) This leaves no room for working on the trains. It says something about how well these kids have been raised. I have no concerns at all about them touching my trains. Good kids.

I had a small break from the Union Pacific branch. I contrasted on the New York Central lately. A bought some Century Green boxcars.
I thought of passing scenes, train yard but businesses or industries not yet figured out. A other idea was going to continue it with Conrail.

Train front some exciting stuff FINALLY HAPPENING - Today we are pouring footngs! It was an ordeal getting here though. Someone called the county permit office and complained that I am building to close to the property line ( I think I know who ) and the county wanted me to hire survey engineer to check my footings - I told them FLAT OUT NO it would have been FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS !!! If that person was so concerned about it he could pay but I WAS NOT GOING to fork over that kind of dough because he was being a jerk. What does he care anyways ???
Anyway after they saw that I was budging and we came to an understanding. If the complainer wants to pay the engineer ( which I doubt very seriously he will ) and they find the building to close then I have to tear it down - I made stinking sure I had enough room - So we were allowed to pour the footings - TODAY

Henry - Have you tried "Cold Eeze" it is pretty awesome cold medicine. I used to get very sick about four times a winter. Now when I feel something come on I get a few and boom! The cold/flue goes away. You can get in just about any store. Walmart, CVS, Giant food etc...
Ken - OOOPS - I sent a bunch of emails today withg photos seperately - sorry - I just read your post below. Next time I will send zip files. Have some really neat photos though - Is that your controls on the T - POST next to the layout ? If you have loose screws you can try "lock tight ( tite sp? ) " or plumbers tape. Either will make it so screws will not back out.

Finally getting "settled" after the Christmas run to see the grandcheerins and so have had several pages of Diner news to peruse.
The circle trip - Myrtle Beach SC to Kitty Hawk NC to Roanoke VA and back to Myrtle Beach was 1005 miles, and I will be just fine if I don't take any more long trips for some time. The Prius did average 52 mpg for the tour, though.
One little highlight of the trip was stopping for lunch on Christmas Eve on the section from Kitty Hawk NC to Roanoke VA. We were going through the Great Dismal Swamp region and ate at The Virginia Diner in Waverly, Virginia. This place has plenty of billboards ("only 6 more miles to...") and although we have been that way a number of times we had never stopped there. WELL, the Virginia Diner originated in old passenger cars of the Surry, Sussex & Southhampton 3-foot gauge. They had flat screens in the diner scrolling a slide show and so I could dine while enjoying pictures of little 2-6-2s and 0-4-2s. I had the pork barbeque special with blackeyed peas and collards.... and it was tasty.
A front is passing through here at the beach, and I'm waiting for one more line of showers to get out over the Atlantic so I can take my walk on the beach. Surf temperature 55 degrees today, and quite a few people seem to be in town for the holiday week. There are quite a few nice live band opportunities this weekend, and we'll likely go see The Band of Oz on Friday night.
"Peace" is sent out to those dealing with the numerous serious health concerns mentioned here at Christmastime. 'Tis a shame that we have to learn about so many different medical things as we get older, but one has to be their own advocate as everyone else has things to deal with, too. Peace be with you.
I'll be baking my beef tortilla casserole this evening and watching my Virginia Tech Hokies in the Belk Bowl. Glass of cabernet with that.

A happy day 6 of the season to all of you. I spent yesterday at my sister's house evidently annoying her at every turn...... She loudly disagreed with most everything I did or said all afternoon. I was quite glad to get in the Volt and head home..... I really think she needs to go see her Psychiatrist again.
I have been following a horrible event that has been happening to one of my favorite students over Christmas. She and her fiance (another favorite student of mine) went to the Dominican Republic over Christmas... OK, I'll let you read about it all here. Sara is one of the most loving, caring, and beautiful women I know! She was adopted (she and her brother and sister) by a local single teacher who is a member of my church. Those kids had a major horrible experience when very young. Their mother left one day and never returned (single mother, I won't go into the circumstance surrounding the disappearance....). The oldest kid was all of 4 years old! He ended up taking care of his sisters (The youngest was an infant) for 2 weeks before they were found and taken to child protetive services. The brother ended up being a member of my Boy Scout Troop during Middle School. He was a kid who was dealing with some enormous issues stemming from back then. He was terrified of loud sounds and had major psycological problems. After he graduated from High School he ended up joining the Marines and became a member of the Presidential Guard!
He came home on leave after he made the Guard and showed up at the Middle School where I taught right about dismissal time in full dress uniform. He signed in at the office and made his way down the 6th. Grade hallway. The teachers were, of course all in the hallway as was I by my room around the corner. We chatted for some time, shook hands (the Boy Scout Handshake), and gave each other a huge hug! Later several teachers told me when they asked him why he stopped at school (they were awed!), he told them he wanted to show his Scoutmaster his new Uniform!!! ( I cried for a long time when told that.....). Anyway.... Sara graduated from Geneva High School in 2000 with honors and was a recipient of a Martin Luther King Scholarship which helped her become a Nurse. It looks like things are finally going to turn out OK for the time being as she is now back in Nashville and her Mother had this as an update to the article in the local paper: "Well, they're back and Sara is settled into her hosp room. They are both exhausted.The air flight landed at the airport and then Sara had an ambulance ride to the hosp. When the flight nurse was looking at her records from the Dominican Hosp, it turns out they were only giving Sara benaydrl (low doses) for the pain which is why she was in pain most of the time and could not sleep. The chest tube they had in her was about the size/width of one of my fingers and so every time she moves, the tube moves and it hurts. They just gave her some real pain meds so that should help. She met with one of the pulmonary Docs tonight and they will be doing the surgery either tomorrow afternoon or evening - she'll meet with the surgeon in the morning. Sara's friend Angie explained the surgery to me. They will rough up the outside of the lung where it touches the chest wall which creates scar tissue and helps the lung to bond more to the chest wall. (that's my interpretation of what she was medically telling me) Recuperation time varies depending on varying factors - hopefully the surgeon can give her a better idea tomorrow. Again, thanks for all the prayers and good wishes coming their way."
So.... That is one reason I wasn't in here yesterday... Hope you all have a great day. Stay Safe and warm out there!

My condolances, nad I understand where you are.
We had to make the decision to pull life support from my mother in 2003. Since she was effectively brain dead, there was no chance of recovery, but she remained on her own for about 4 hours in ICU after we shut off life support.
In her case, it really was a blessing in disguise as Multiple Sclerosis had ravaged her body for years and was affecting her brain. The last five years of her life were very unkind. SHe had several strokes, the only thing strokes could take away was her speach, She recovered it once, then lost it becoming unable to communicate effectively. and then her eyes started going and her hearing. SHe was beconing a living vegetable as it was.
Still its not easy to decide whne somoene's life is over, it is as if it is not up to US to determine so.
Yet still we err on the side of life, because death is so.....final.
SO, I wish you the best as you go through THIS phase of your uncle's life.

YGW I read your E-Mail but did not get to E-Mail back. To busy starting the I Hate QSI Decoder Club. Well, not the ones in the CB&Q F's, they are great! Anyway, I rather deal with the Zip Files than 4 e-mails. Just make sure you have all the text listed the way I sent mine. That way I can do a copy and paste explaing what the diners are looking at.
I Hate QSI Decoder Club I thought I had the reset problem fixed! Changed decoder pro to page mode (I think it was page, it is the setting at the top of the list) and then resat all CV's. Read the cv's of the Might B&O F7's address was 3. Read the POS PK 2000 E-8 Paper Weight and it's address was all so 3 so it all so took!
Re-wrote the cv's of the POS PK 2000 E-8 Paper Weight and hit the many line. You guess it, sat there like a lump.
Might B&O F7's Found a mistake I made when I was first resetting the CV's to get them to run. Got the 233 address set right this time! Reset took so I should be back in the rails with sound! Well, they took the 233 address just fine, but still no sound?
OK, the F7A I could maybe understand. I had the decoder board out and made some mistakes wiring it. Now the F7b? Never have had the shell off!
Real Kicker? Install the B&O F7a shell, and it is derailing again? With shell off, tracks great. Tracked great till I took the shell off for the first time I will add. I just don't see how I could install the shell wrong?
Where can a persone buy #2 screws? Took one of the B&O coal cars with me to Lowes to see if I can find the screws they lost. Smallest they had was #4's. Bought a bag of #4's and will see if the head of the screw will fit in the truck. To bad they did not have #3's. Need something that will hold better in the opening. I don't know how old theses cars are, they where the ones with Spung Trucks I got from YGW.
Ed Only rolling stock I am have a little problem with are the Athearn PRR coal cars that where air brushed. Just cannot get them free wheeling to my taste. Next I will try some new axels, I am sure that will do the trick!

It´s past 5pm in my neck of the woods, so it´s a "Good Evening, Folks!"
Just dropping by before I go into hibernating mode for the rest of the year. There are a couple of things I have to chew on before making up my mind, as things seem to be rapidly moving downhill in my country.
Those of you who know me a little better, know that I live in a small town community southwest of Germany´s second largest city in the north of this country. In those 20 years I have been living in this community, the most serious crimes used to be the odd chicken run over by a car, the theft of a bicycle and every few years, a case of burglary. That has changed completely with the influx of what is called refugees, but is legally nothing else than illegal aliens. We now enjoy soring numbers of robberies, assaults, attempted murders and rape. To top it all, one of the alleged terrorists involved in the 2015 Paris massacre, which left 130 people dead, was arrested just around the corner from my place. He had been hiding there as a "refugee" claiming to be 17, in effect being 23. He is also allegedly one of those responsible for the assault on my wife and me.
I don´t want to live here anylonger and I don´t want to live in this country anylonger. I need to find a way out of here, as the threat to my life has become a real one. I don´t think I´ll have the option of an orderly retreat.
I wish all my friends here a safe entry into a healthy and prosperous year 2017.

Family - Uncle is not doing well at all, on full life support. He is unfortunately not expected to make it. He had congestive heart failure for a while, ontop of other medical issues, and flatlined at the hospital yesterday. They could not get a pulse for almost 30 minutes, which is not good. This morning his kidneys stopped working ontop of everything else, which is not a good sign.

Todays truck got stuck, then slid on the ice when he finally got it loose, and slid for about a city block before he got it stopped again! YIKES!

Work Front As good as yesterday was, to day was as bad! Some of the stupid things I had to deal with today. Best one was a couple that came in and wife said "show us a king sizes mattress". Asked them what kind of feel or prices range are you looking? I was told by the wife "I will tell you after we find it"! Told her we have 50 king sizes mattress, one is $5,000.00 so where would you like to start? Husband spoke up and asked "Do you have Calf Kings"? I said yes, but why? Calf Kings are smaller than std Kings. (Cal Kings are longer but not as wide, less sq inch of sleeping spaces. Most folks thing they are bigger than a normal king)
With that question the wife said "come on, we are leaving"! I said Thank You and good by. I was in a tad of a mood, but at the same time I need some clue where to start!
CN Charlie Glad to have you back with us. Now the catheter, I could have done with out! Have not had one yet and like to keep it that way.

Train Wreck Front. Moved the montain (OK really a hill) and was a tad surprised at what I found. OK, what started the train wreck was a coupler came uncoupled and dropped some coal cars in the path of the CB&Q train. Derailed the caboose and jamed up the CB&Q's. Got the B&O coal cars hooked up, marked the coal car that came uncoupled and started up the coal drag to where I could pull the coal car that became uncoupled. That is when the RR went to heck in a hand basket!
Found 2 of the the B&O Coal Cars dropped the screws that hold the trucks on. They where the ones that fould the B line that the Bessemer SD's run on. B&O coal cars where some of the ones that YGW sent me with great looking coal load monuted on foam. Bessmers bashed the heck out of one. Any one want to do a old fashion BBQ?
Missing screws might explain why some times I have a quick short, trains stall and start moving again. I would try a car with some magnets on it the bottom but the last time I did I sucked up rail spikes.
Trains are running great right now so I am happy.
CNCharlieThe first 3 days after surgery were gruelling to say the least. I pushed that morphine button a lot. I spent 6 nights in hospital
Been there, done that! NO fun!!!! I was on hydromorphone (morphine) for weeks after my spinal fusion. The halucinations were interesting. For me they were more annoying than anything else, but I caused my wife a lot of concern when I voiced what was going on in my mind. Fortunately I didn't suffer too much from withdrawal symptoms, but the withdrawal issues I did experience were quite unpleasant.
