 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed and I will have a Beer

Work Front, well it sucked Rail Spikes and then stuck in the ash pit! Spent most of the day fixing Jerry the Dunce mistakes. Only had 6 people in and two of them could have related to Jerry the DunceDumb as a Box Of Rocks! Rocks that came in the short dump truck that is! Like "I have a hard side King Water bed but want to use a Queen Sizes water bed in it, how do I do that"? Bang Head

Started to feel like caboose around 5:00 PM and started going down till I got home. Feeling a tad better with a Beer in me but still don't want to do what I wanted to.

gmpullman
Heck, last week you couldn't even spell Bessemer and today you're ready to start a fan club!

Ed I would not go so far as starting a fan club. I just think two of the same engines MU looked better. Plus, well lets faces it a single PK 2000 SD 7 is not a great puller. Not a bad one, the one I leasing from you is pulling 16 cars. But I have a 30 car hopper train that needs to get the barley and hops to the brewey! was looking for a Bessemer caboose I will add.

Question for you folks about installing fly wheels. I have a couple of good motors for PK 2000 engines, but the flywheels are to short. Getting them off is not that bad, but how do you folks indtall new ones? With the old Atheran BB engines I could press them on by hand.

 See you all later!

 Ken

Exciting day today as I went to the Newport, MN club show in Woodbury. I had been looking forward to this since April when I was unable to make it to that show. Besides my wedding a few weeks ago, this was up there on my list of things to do this fall. I went in with an extensive list of items to look for as I get back into the hobby more and more. While I got some prices to compare and a few ideas, I came away with the following items.

Chicago & North Western Power (1963-1995) volume 4

Minneapolis, Northfield, & Southern - Dan Patch to Dragon

Athearn RTR Rail Gon gondola

Athearn Minneapolis, Northfield, & Southern SD39, DCC ready

two other boxcars and two packs of couplers

i got the locomotive for quite a deal compared to what I've found online through various sites. I instantly snapped this up as I plan to incorporate the MNS into my layout plans. There were a few other items I wanted to buy, but the card machine for the guy was not working, maybe it was a blessing.

Pup next is a trip to Duluth, MN for our mini-honeymoon next week. I talked my wife into stopping at Carr's Hobby Shop. Can't wait!

Hope everyone is having a great and productive weekend!

Evenin' folks.....  I think, anyway......

Janie, I could sure use a cup of decaf and a hot fudge sundae tonight.....

Man!!!!  What a day at the museum.  We had our biggest day ever with over 700 people riding the cabooses.  Another day of little relief crew either, so I stood on my feet and worked as car host for close to 9 hours staright (we put in two extra runs to give everyone a ride....  Walked in the door here at 7PM and managed to make my self a bit of supper.....  I will be heading to bed in about another half hjour so I can drive to the museum and do the same tomorrow......

Got an email yesterday from #2 son out in Chicago.  He found an article in a local news place from the Finger Lakes about a "small" problem that we have been somewhat aware of for many years here in town.  We used to have a large foundry in Geneva that shut down just a few years after my family arrived...

The DEC has now confirmed major problems in that part of the city from the... Well here is part of the article:

"Dozens of property owners in Geneva are being notified that the soil in their yards contains elevated levels of potentially harmful arsenic and lead.

Residents of the affected area were being urged Wednesday to avoid unnecessary contact with bare soil and to wash their hands thoroughly, especially before eating."

The state Department of Environmental Conservation, which disclosed the contamination in a news release yesterday says the tainted soil eventually will have to be removed and replaced with clean fill.

The toxic metals found in the soil are believed to have come from operations at the former Geneva Foundry on Jackson Street.  The foundry was in business for over 100 years until before it closed in 1988."

We lived in that area for the first 3 years we lived here.  More here.  We lived in the old Rectory of St. Peters Church (right across the street from Genessee Park) and in addition to teaching Music at the Middle School I was also the Church Sextent, and the Organist/Choir Director there.  Will be interesting when they start removing all the toxic (Lead and Arsenic) contaminated soil in that area....  Guess people will have some new lawns and gardens......

Have a great night!

Afternoon Diners,

After 5 days of delays, I finally got my UP F3 and NW2 locomotives with a tank car.

I installed the trip pin in the NW2. I had some difficulties holding on to it, and trying to put the air hose into the couplers. This little locomotive is very fragile.

Good morning all.

Flo, I will have a couple of them there doughnuts, and a glass of milk please. Thanks.

Weather - Warmer, above 65 today, nearing 70, tomorrow above 75, but Storm likely. Of course, it could be worse this time of year, so I won't complain about the weather.

W**k - Here, I might just complain! The visiting managers made a complete mess of the place, ignoring floor plans, and shoving things where they don't belong. There is no longer any way to shop one entire side, as the "aisles" are a whopping 18" (yes, inches!Surprise) wide, at the most! And, they moved fixtures near the fire exits, to being within 36" of the doors, while the state mandates a minimum of 48" clearance all around... Oops - Sign They were here to "help" for 2 days, and made 3 more days of w**k to fix what they "helped" with! Sigh Angry

The "best" part? They are coming back in two weeks, to "help" some more! Crying

Why? Because "we" (meaning my store, especially management, including myself) are not doing things "right"Dots - Sign Tongue Tied

Trains - Decoders: Yes, I have seen the ESU colors, and while the orange/red (reddish-orange) issue is present, this was entirely just a case of different lighting, so no fault other than on me for not realizing that before hand.

At least I caught it before I applied any power!

SD40-2  - continued - Caught a slight (silly) mistake in the units paint scheme... The number is incorrect for that scheme. Now, mind you, that is not that big an issue. (Most wouldn't notice.... Until I just pointed it out... Oops - Sign) I can either, 1: Ignore the number issue (most likely will... I will just explain it away as that is the number applied when my freelance road leased it, as they had a conflict with the other {correct} number on their roster), or, 2: Change the road number. (Possibly will eventually, maybe.) Issues like these I am not entirely concearned about. Now, an SD40-2 with 4 axles, or some other really wacko issue, I might just be forced into taking action, but a road number being incorrect for that paint scheme (yes, they do have a SD40-2 on the roster with that number, just a different paint scheme variant.) is a small issue for me.

After all, trains are FUN, right?

(Ken might disagree, at times like when his newest one is misbehaving like currently. Sorry Ken.)

This reminds me of a tshirt my cousin gave me, it reads: It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye, then it's hilarious! - Off Topic - I know. I just had to do it....

Although, I am kicking myself for not grabbing a tshirt I seen last weekend, that read: My train of thought derailed.... There were no survivors.

Yep, that would fit in quite well (at w**k) right now. Smile, Wink & Grin

Hope everyone is well, and all enjoy the day!

I totally agree with you about the ESU wire colours! It shouldn't be that difficult to differentiate between the colours.

Dave,

I'm glad, in a way, that it isn't just me Surprise ! I have always performed well in color-blindness testing. You're right, either the designers goofed, or maybe the accountants if ESU snagged a "deal" on the nearly identical colors!

Often times, I'll uncover a fault in a product and scratch my head and grumble "WHAT were they thinking?"

Take care, Ed

Ricky, every time I install a Loksound decoder I have to be VERY careful with the wire colors! To me, the red and orange color insulation ESU uses is very similar and I'm guessing that switching those two will definitely make something go pop!

I totally agree with you about the ESU wire colours! It shouldn't be that difficult to differentiate between the colours.

This is an example of where the designers were asleep at the wheel. Given that their decoders are so well designed there is no excuse for making the wires difficult to identify.

My 2 Cents

Cheers all!

Hi, Diners & Crew

Chloe, just slide that beer Ken bought my right down the counter, I'll catch it on the way by.

Thanks Ken!

Gee I really didn't mean to create a Bessemer addiction for ya' there, Ken. I hear there are help-lines you can call when you need an EMD-fix!

Why don't you get a biker-wallet with a chain on it and leave it pad-locked to the refrigerator? Then when you get to K-10 hobby shop... no dough, no trains!

Heck, last week you couldn't even spell Bessemer and today you're ready to start a fan club! (There's a joke in there somewhere Big Smile)

Sorry it isn't meeting your expectations... Glad to hear the other engines are doing great!

Ricky, every time I install a Loksound decoder I have to be VERY careful with the wire colors! To me, the red and orange color insulation ESU uses is very similar and I'm guessing that switching those two will definitely make something go pop!

I'm a little achy at the joints tonight, here's why...

and I expect I'll be even worse tomorrow, after seven yards of concrete arrive at 8:30 am! I lived in this place 32 years and I'm finally getting around to pouring an apron in front of the "Porte Cochère"!

Layout Work  I mean, FUN!

I had a place by the yard lead where the main followed a diverging route through a right hand turnout. Since I was doing a little electrical "improvement" work I decided to pull this turnout, since it also had gaps cut in the rail where I no longer needed them, and replace it with a left. This allowed me to make a realignment so I could install a signal here, too. Yes No photos, just yet...

I'm anxiously awaiting the FedEx truck tomorrow, too. I guess there are still problems in the mid-Atlantic states so the package has been delayed from Wednesday, travelling throughout much of the mid-south, and on until today.

I was lucky to score an Overland model of the U.S. No.1 Ferdinand Magellan Presidential Pullman car! I have longed for years to own one of these models and the wait is finally (almost) over Smile !

I hope everyone is getting along swimmingly (what ever does that mean, exactly?) and my thoughts and prayers are with those who are less fortunate...

Regards, Ed

Ken:

I'm sorry to hear that your new Bessemer SD7 does not perform properly. That is very disappointing. If you pay for a new engine you should be able to expect that it will run.

I know what your problem at the train store is, it is caled " wannahaveitnow"

Guess it is sort of that, but I did not want the Bessemer SD 7 to get lonely! Smile, Wink & Grin I was thinking about it on the way home. Most of my engies I have pairs excpet steam.

 4 Monon F3's

 4 Santa Fe Warbonets F's

 2 B&O GP 30's

 2 B&O GP 7's

 2 NYC F's 3

And the list goes on and on? Far as rolling stock, I have very few single cars.

New Bessemer SD 7. So far it does not hold a candle to the one Ed Sent! Eds has better lighting, new one does not have lite road numbers. Tracks better through turnouts, new one stalls at slow speeds when it hits a turnout. At this point I think it may be getting power from only the rear trucks. If that is the case, I am taking it back for a refund. Real kicker, I do not like the sounds! As much as I love the looks of the SD 7's and 9's I just don't like the sounds they make? Love the sounds of F units, GE AC 6000's, RSD 15's (RSD are the best).

Well it is late, so I will type at you all Saturday Ken

FRRYKid - I have the same problem with my family. I keep telling them the same thing "train stuff" I even give them list, I invariably get ties, socks etc...Tongue Tied

In my case, I don't wear neckties unless it is a very special occasion (The last time if memory serves was summer of 15 at a convention dinner.) so I don't have to worry about the ties problem.

Steven- How come I can't access my account on the real computer but I can access everything on a kindle and cellphone? Is it because I don't have internet explorer 10?

Internet Explorer 10 is definitely not a requirement to use the Forums. (I don't know ANYTHING that requires Internet Explorer.) Try logging out and back in again. If that doesn't work, contact Customer Service at 800-533-6644 or ModelRailroader@CustomerSvc.com.

Morning diners,

I was looking at my PRWS flyer I get in my emails. I noticed that Bluford Shops is continuing making the War Emergency Hoppers. I saw the CB&Q ones and read the description. They were redone in Havelock, NE. a few dozen miles away from North Platte.

Would I get to see a lot or a little Burlington Route, and Union Pacific freight cars? Would it be the same with modern day?

Later on or later I would need to look at the historical ariel photos I saw only one in 1949 but I need to use a real computer than this kindle that I normally use.

Morning all

Hope to leave early today. Been w**king 10 to 11 hours daily.  Promises to be a regular day with no drama - but it is early yet Huh?

Ricky W - Duron paints ( now Sherwin Williams ) used to have a light display in there show room that had showed the same color under different lights and it was AMAZING how the colors looked different under the different lights

Ken - What the HECK is that SMELL around here Dead someone eat something rotten ??? I think I know what your problem at the train store is, it is caled " wannahaveitnow" It is known to have advers affects on all train hobbist and usually results in seperating their wallets from the green stuff that is sometimes found there. The only known cures are Death, Knock in the head resulting in a change of hobbies such as rose growing or simply being locked out of LHS or online stores !

Moelarry = Here have DDRP on me. how are you "train sorting" ? I actually like to go through my train stuff and sort it out. What in the world are you doing with a "reel to reel" ?

ATSF - What is scantrons ?

FRRYKids - I have the same problem with my family. I keep telling them the same thing "train stuff" I even give them list, I invariably get ties, socks etc...Tongue Tied

Richard/Steve - I doubt I will ever eat breakfast again ! Oh I am feeling sick Ick!

Henry - I can never figure out when people have so much advance warning that they still get killed. Just amazing. Me if they say hey you are gonna flood deep. I am in my boat with paddles heading for higher ground !

Garry - Have a safe trip

CN Charlie - It must be tuff working with bundles of clothing on. I have worked in 0 degree weather and we had a TERRIBLE time keeping our air guns, compressors working in low temps. Seemed like something was always snapping or freezing or due to the cold weather.

Howmus - thanks I thought they could only be submitted at conventions

Lion we have a BUNCH of those NIMBYS. I have lived in my area all my life. I am always amazed when someone who has only lived here ten or fifteen years trys to tell the rest of us what we can and cant do with our land.

Qoute and history for today :

Patrick Henry Lee 1736 -1799

Our brethern are already in the field! Why stand we here idle !?...What would you have ? Is life so dear. or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of slavery ? Forbid it almight God!!! I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me LIBERTY or give me DEATH!

Henrys calls to arm was given on March 23, 1775 during the second Virginia convention at St. Johns Church in Richmond Va. ( so much for the lie of seperation of church and state) Thomas Jefferson later wrote "It is not easy to say what we should have done without Patrick Henry...He was before us all in maintaining the spirit of the Revolution"

Have a good day

Good evening all.

Zoe, a slice of the pie of the day, whichever that maybe. What's that? Pumpkin? Ok! Of course, whipped cream on it. A glass of cider to go with it? Awesome! Yes, please! Thanks. Make sure Ken gets some cider as well. Make his hard cider though... Pirate

Actually, give me the hard cider, Ken the regular cider.... Mischief

Okay, fine, Ken can have whichever style cider he would like. Or, if he would like, another Beer. Yes, I will still take a hard cider. Thanks.

Trains - Black Eye Lesson learned.... Embarrassed Always do decoder installation under the same lighting.... I did the SD40-2 under different lighting than normal. Mixed the grey and white wires... Oops - Sign Blindfold

No LED's were harmed. I found it just before I placed it on my programming track.... And that is always before I install lights, to ensure the motor is wired correctly. Hense, no, the shell was not installed yet. Therefore allowing me to see that the actual grey wire was loose. I first couldn't understand how it had become disconnected, as I had securely soldered it to the motor contacts. (Of course, I had done that with the contacts disconnected from the motor.)

Last time I do a decoder install in my living room. Blindfold Embarrassed

To quote another Simpson, this time Homer, "D'oh!"

Zoe, that cider is delicious! What's that? Oh, yes, the pie is great as well, thanks!

Good night all.

 Evening Diners

Flo I will have a Beer please. No Flo I am not buying Ed a beer, I am mad at him! OK, it was my fault so give him a Beer if he makes it in, but it is still his fault! Hmm

Day Off. Did work on the layout some and got some re-wing done. Should have the turnout motors back on line in the next day or so. Paid some bills, drop by Hanger Clinic to get my shoes refitted for the 4th time. (left foot not looking good at all) Dropped a book off at the Library and stopped in at K-10 Model Trains. With my luck, Hanger Clinic, Library and K-10 Model Trains are all with in 600 feet from each other! Whistling

It was Ed's fault! Smile, Wink & Grin Stopped in K-10 just to buy a pack of Kadee #5's and a set of PK 2000 wheels. Went to look at the Walthers Proto 2000 Warbonnet F7s I keep talking my self out of. What is sitting on top of them? Walthers Proto 2000 Bessemer SD 7's with sound! I just got the Bessemer Ed sent me running this week, so last week I did not really recongnise what the SD 7's where! My bill should have been $14.00 bill went to $178.00 becaused Ed has me hooked now on Bessemer SD's! Bang Head Price did seem good at $149.00 so I took it home.

First Tsunami decoder but don't know if I really like it yet. Only time will tell.

Train Poor Ken Posting Again. Big Smile

Afternoon all.

Flo, RBF please. Thanks.

Weather - Much cooler than last forecasted, struggling to hit 60. Weekend is supposed to be 70's, we shall see.

W**k - Visiting managers from nearby stores, to assist with freight and "other issues" per our DM.

Trains - Still working on the SD40-2, got a set of ditchlight castings to add on, and will light them using chip style SMD LED's. Will wire them in along with headlights and reverse lights, but control them separately. Might add in controllable number board lights as well.

ATSFGuy

photocopied powerpoint slides, the textbook, writing in the exam booklet, and the use of electronic devices will not be prohibited.

Not to offend, but I think you meant to say that it is prohibited, or "not be permitted."

Yes, I would prefer notes on 8 short answers and one essay over 80+ multiple choice questions. That would be a little easier to handle.

Off hand, I have broken one of those rules before... That of not writing in the exam booklet, or rather, on the exam papers. My high school's drivers Ed class, final exam, one of the questions, no joke, was this: "Your car stalls on the tracks, and there is no train coming. Do you: A:-Run towards the train, Or, B: Run away from the train?" Oops - Sign

I circled the question, placed my initials in the circle, and wrote, on my answer sheet: "In the absence of a train, I would, C - Push the car off the tracks. If there was a train coming, you should, A -  Run towards the train, but off of the tracks, to avoid any flying debris from what is left of your crushed car..."

My teacher was not happy that I had broken the rule of not writing on the exam papers. When I was confronted over it, my only response, was to read the question I had flagged by circling it, with a Smile on my face.

My teacher, very sheepishly, replied: "Never mind breaking the rule, and, your answer was correct." I would hope I got it right!

Of course, the teacher was fortunate that I did not burst out laughing after reading the question! Laugh

Hope all enjoy the day, and that all are well.

Good Morning,

Been busy studing for my History 17 Midterm so I haven't really been on here.

The Midterm;

8 short answers and 1 essay question, you must purchase a green exam booklet from the college book store and bring it with you on the day of the exam, students may bring any hand written notes or thier spiral notebooks to use on the exam, however, photocopied powerpoint slides, the textbook, writing in the exam booklet, and the use of electronic devices will not be permitted.

Short answers (list of 35-40, pick 8 to write) (roughly 1-2 paragraphs) (10 points each).

Essay (5 essay prompts, pick 1 to write) (as much as you can), "the more you write the better". (70 points)

I've been pre-writing a couple of the shorts I think will be on the exam as well as an essay question. That way, I can just plug the answers in from my notes.

I'm doing the essay first, the short answers second.

This version of a midterm seems better vs answering 100 multiple choice questions on a scantron and doing it from memory.

What do you guys think?

Flo, could I get a roast beef omlette, peeper jack cheese and a toasted cinnamon-raisin bagel? (Yes, I'm in the mood for breakfast for lunch.)

Hobby Front:  Got new super glue so hopefully I can get the other two crossings built on the layout on Sunday. The new engine house is coming along. Managed to find a couple of packages of the Walthers Modulars Wall Columns & Caps. Ended up with enough pieces that I might be able to build a few more buildings. (I did have to KB the front for the engine house door. I am using pieces from 4 different wall panels, a couple of spare straight roof trim sections, and a pair of roll up doors. It has been and will be an interesting process.)

I'm also managing to find parts for my SD45 project: an additional set of handrails and what appears to be the correct detail part for the noselight.

Later this week I should also get what Mom let me buy for my birthday (She asked what I wanted, I told her and she gave me permission): a couple packages of tree armatures, a load for a gondola car and a few pieces of track. (For the longest time, she made the rule that she wouldn't get me railroad stuff for my birthday. She finally backed down on that as that's usually the only thing that I want.)

I come here to escape politics.  You need to turn the TV on with a stick and gloves.

Headed toward SC this weekend.  The Media has lost all interest in Matthew.  About 40 miles of I-95 is closed and expected to remain closed for another week in NC, which got hit the hardest.  "Spoke" to a friend on facebook, who used to live in Goldsboro, the SE part of NC.  Yesterday she said she had "friends losing their homes as we speak"  20 people died in NC nearly all from driving into standing water.  the Nuese river isn't suposed to crest until Saturday.  Eastern NC is pretty darn flat.  Angel for those who are suffering.

Nuthin' on the train front.

*creeeeak* Hey, where is everybody? *brushes away cobwebs* Oh, I see, the staff has been redecorating for Halloween. Yes, very nice, Zoe. I'll just have some bacon and eggs.

Oh, it's all Halloween-themed, is it? Well, how about...

Those are pretty cute, actually. But I think I'll just have some pancakes.

I give up.

Steve If it was my post where I used the word the election word I am sorry. I thought it was a inacent remark but maybe I was wrong.

The posts themselves didn't contain anything objectionable, but if we let someone broach the subject of politics at all, even innocently, other people are going to wonder why they aren't allowed to reply with something more specific. Best solution is to not allow mention of politics at all. That way, there are no questionable judgment calls.

Good evening all.

Steve - Welcome back. Hope it was an enjoyable vacation.

Zoe - Any of those cinnamon rolls left? Great! One, with a glass of milk please. Thanks! Make sure Steve had one as well.

W**k - Don't get me started! Been a really rough week! Best employee quit, corporate has been a pain, and grumpy people out the wazoo.... Did I mention that the freight deliveries have us packed to the ceiling? Ugh.... If I mention that, that just might get me started.....

Weather - Cooler, frosted Tues. morning, slightly warmer now. Supposed to get back close to 70 tomorrow.

Trains - Fostoria trip was good, but slow. Only saw 8 trains in 3.5 hours and there were 3 groups of 2 at once... and one of them blocked another... So we went to the Mad river & NKP museum. Afterwards went to Cleveland for dinner, then came home. Started working on my new (old, but new to me) BB SD40-2, tested the motor, and it is a awesome candidate for DCC, have the hardwiring completed to the motor, and new motor mounts installed, will be installing LED lighting, and need to hardwire the power pickups in. I will (eventually) be installing operating ditch lights, using SMD Chip LED's. It will not have sound, as I do not have a sound decoder and speaker(s) available right now. (Eventually might get sound using sugarcube speakers. Unknown right now...) The new motor mounts got interesting. I picked up a pack of the new, screw mounts. 2-56 screws fit the mounts perfectly, but not the chassis... They slide right through. So, got a set of metal washers, then used Kadee fiber washers to cover and insulate the screw heads. It works.

Hope all are well, and have a good night!
