Sulfer powder, perhaps you meant smokeless power.  It is not interchangeable with black powder, so it's a good thing no one got hurt.

Thanks for correcting me. I'm relating the story second hand and I don't know anything about gunpowder. Suffice it to say that they were using the wrong powder and they could have been hurt.

The Snider Enfield hasn't been fired since, and the breech block has been locked closed. Probably a good thing as it's possible that using the smokeless powder may have weakened the structure of the gun.

Flo, could I get my standard order of breaded mushrooms w/ blue cheese dressing? Thank you so much.

Hobby Front:  Got the rain gutters applied to the new engine house (one of the parts on order that came in on Saturday) and also got the brick color applied to the building (and the gutters). The base will need to have the paint touched up with concrete. Roof and awning paint (Humbrol Polished Steel Metalcote) should be here Thursday according to tracking. (I had to order a couple of other jars of paint anyway and one more wasn't that much more.) Once the roofs and the awnings are painted then the windows, doors and braces will be attached. (Also ordered a piece of Atlas concrete tie flextrack for use in the building. Code 83 but I do have transition joiners that I can use. Trying to lessen the headache of building in ground track like would have been in an engine house.)

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed and I will have a Beer and if the Buick Guy shows up give him one as well.

Rick Man that sucks! What reason did the DM use? Personally I would fight it, make them regreat it! What the heck are they going to do, fire you again? One company fired and rehired me 3 times. 4 th time they asked me to come back I told them something I cannot post here!

Buick Guy and others. A month ago my daughter and SIL gave my wife a Tablet and installed a wires less router and all was fine. Now twices I have lost the internet but the modem lights says it should be working! Have my wife start up her tablet and I am back on line? My cable hooks to the router, then to my computer, is the router timing out so I lose the internet?

Rick I am turly sorry. I read all of your post and it makes me feel bad.

Gary - The tomahawk episode was priceless! Only the Great Carsoni could have that happen on his show, even if by chance odds.

I missed the original airing and had to see it on a rerun. Just as well, I woulda never believed it had I seen it with my own eyes.

I really miss Johnny!

I have to say that Ken's and your posts regarding w**k have made me so glad I never pursued a career in retail. Stick out tongue

Ray - I did know about the depth of Seneca Lake. Some years back, we took a boat ride out of Watkins Glen. It was very informative as well as scenic. Quite a bit about the salt mining, etc. Learned a lot.

We haven't been up to Fox Run Winery for a couple of years. In fact we haven't been visiting many of the wineries at all. We just go to about 3 or 4 and get certain wines we like from each. It's a quick shopping trip. Some day we may spend 2 nights which would give us time to do more, including visiting you. I'd like that. The pavilion in the photo is at Glenora Winery & Inn.

Tomorrow will be a busy day. I usually do the laundry on Tuesday, but I will also clean the windows in this old house, and there are a lot of them. I try to do them in the spring & the fall. Not really a job I like, but at least with tilt-in windows, it's a lot easier than it use to be.

Ricky - Sorry to hear about your job loss. Hopefully, that old saying "When one door closes, another opens" will apply to you soon.

Yes, Douglas, I'm old enough to remember George Gobel on the Tonight Show with Bob Hope and I think Jimmy Stewart.  It generated huge laughter from the audience, but not nearly as much as Ed Ames and his tomahawk.

Steven ... Thanks for the Chicago style pizza. .... So much for eating healthy.... I had too much ! ... I like deep dish pizza.

I would love to see the Cubs win the World Series after all of the disappointing seasons they had when I was young and went to their games.

I keep getting interrupted when I think I have time to work on the layout. However, I did find time to begin a scenery project today.

Good evening all.

Zoe, Cleveland style BBQ chicken (Wet BBQ, with a spicy mustard based BBQ sauce.), a slice of that warm apple pie, with a scoop of ice cream, and a ice water please. Thanks.

Steven - Thanks, but I will pass on the Chitown pizza, now, if you were doing NW Ohio style BBQ, well, then I might take you up on that offer. Wink

Weather - Cool and wet, but it is still not as cold as it could be around my area this time of the year. (Could be cold enough to have that four-letter word fluffy stuff by now, but haven't gotten any yet.)

W**k - Lost my job today, the DM is cleaning house, axe fell on me, possibly someone else as well. Not really anything I could do, it was just a no-win situation that had occurred, and no one could come off a winner given the issues. I lost a job, they lost a good employee with zero customer complaints against him, with zero write-ups on his file, and who would work whenever and doing whatever needed done.

Oh well.

Less stress, at least until bills come due. Have a possible new job lined up, the manager liked me, so we shall see. Not rushing yet, but am actively looking now. (So, again, no, not panicking at this time.)

Only one I feel bad for, is the poor store manager, who was left high & dry as they say. And, last I heard, I may not be the only one gone.

Wrong time of year to pull this in retail.... That's why I feel bad for the store manager.

Seeing as it was a catch-22 situation, I could fight it, via arbitration agreement, but I really don't know if I want to do that.

Might just be better off elsewhere at this point....

As I said though, oh well. It will work out, one way or another.

Trains - Well, I now have more modeling time! Big Smile That will allow me time to finish a few projects, using what I have on hand already. Going to see what I can get done.

Baseball - Yes, as you can probably tell, I am rooting for a different team than Steven is. (Based on our respective "unrelated" Wink food orders.)

Well, hope all are well, and everyone have a good day!

Afternoon Diners,

Flo- I'll have that deep dish pizza. Make my ingredients pepperoni and sausage, please. At least I don't have to wait over an hour like Chicago.

yougottawanta

Angel - Shop Hop ? What is the event for ? To buy quilt parts ? I wouldnt have thought quilts would be a west coast thing.

To both of those questions are Yes. I believe quilts are nationwide not being limited to any state. It's also very popular around the east coast also.

RideOnRoad- I'm glad your neck/head is feeling a little better.

If the Cubs are going to win the world series against the Indians, I'll be very surprised. And then the curse will be over, that will be a shame.

Train Update: While I was writing a list of things I needed for the layout. I realized it was getting expensive. I didn't think a door size layout will be so much.

I normally buy freight cars and locomotives. Not realizing on the whole portion.

Wahoo! I can move my head! I still don't have full range-of-motion (maybe 60-70%), but it it is much better than last Wednesday when I couldn't move it at all. There is still some pain/discomfort, but it is manageable. I was even able to get a complete night's sleep last night for the first time in a week. I am still on the cortisone as an anti-inflamitory and a muscle relaxant. There seems to be a medicine battle raging inside of me as the cortisone want to keep me awake, and the muscle relaxant wants me to go to sleep. On Friday I was watching a webcast for w*%k at the home office and the next thing I knew, the screen was blank and the phone was silent--the webcast had been over for thirty minutes. Oops. I will need to discontinue the muscle relaxant by tomorrow morning. I am heading to Dallas tomorrow evening and the last thing I need is to fall asleep at the gate and miss my flight.

This coming Sunday I am participating in my third "studio recital" as a piano student. I am playing the Aria from the Bach Goldberg Variations, and "The Hours," by Philip Glass. It is always a bit of a hoot to play in these recitals. I am old enough to be the grandfather of nearly everyone else on the program. Last time one girl was so small she had to be helped up onto the piano bench. Always entertaining.

Steve - Thanks But I like meat lovers on thin crust pizza Dinner

Good, ah (looks at clock) ah,  Afternoon I guess.....

Chloe, I could use a Roast Beast Club Sandwich and a pot of Decaf at the moment, please.

I slept in this morning so Blackie was about 45 minutes late getting his insulin today......   Mostly dark and dreary outside today here in the Finger laes region of NYS, but not a whole lot of precipitation right at the moment...  We don't need any more right at the moment.  Have to get all the materials I haul to the NMRA Meets sorted and put away today and then get the mailing list updated for the MLK Sholarship fundraising campaign which needs to go out in about a week from now.

Best get busy.  Have several items to get done today.  Later!

Good Morning,

It is a chilly 2C or about 35F here now but it is sunny.

Ken, I forgot to mention but if that 2-10-2 doesn't have a decoder, it isn't too difficult to install one. I put a Z sized one in front of the cab by removing the boiler shell. Another option would be a tender mount which I also have done but that means either a permanent tender hookup or getting some sort of disconnect plug. By the way that Mehano model was actually only sold in Canada as part of a train set that was made up for a grocery store chain. It is the standard Mehano(IHC) model with an Elesco feedwater heater and CN style front number boards added so it could be a stand-in for CN's 4100 series engine, CN's most powerful. It is a good puller so adding a decoder is worthwhile.

I finally have all of the roadways done on the N scale layout and will put in the grade crossings later today. Then it is on to the ground cover. I have quite a few trees, etc. to install. It will be set in mid-fall.

We don't have much planned for today except a few errands this afternoon. Tomorrow will be a big yard prep day for winter. We have to remove the soil from the flower pots otherwise they will crack with the frost. There are over 80 pots.

See you later,

CN Charlie

Good morning all,

Coffee and a cream cheese bagel please.

I need to work at 3pm today, so next step is to motivate myself to get to the gym a bit before work.

YGW, rent for 3br apartments and homes can range from about 800/mo in the less desirable parts of town, some really are just fine to live in, to over 1300/mo in the premier areas near the city's elite private college, and the well-off suburbs. I found a place in the latter area. I like it, as it's still a quick commute to work, easy access to downtown, and only a few blocks from my current locale.

Since the Diner serves people from all over, and since I don't particularly care about baseball, I'm not going to take sides in the upcoming World Series.

So on a completely unrelated topic, today's blue-plate special is Chicago-style deep-dish pizza.

I use a 1863 .58 cal. Remington Zouave front stuffer.

That must be a blast (pardon the pun) still using a muzzle loader. I'm not a hunter but I do like firing guns. I have only seen muzzle loaders used a few times at historical re-enactments and I have never fired one. I would love to.

Further to my Snider Enfield story, I will relate a tale told to me by my father. Caveat: I don't know if the facts are true.

Many years ago my father and some of his relatives decided to take the Snider Enfield on a hunting trip. They loaded a bunch of shells and off they went. Being a judicious bunch, they decided that they should sight the Snider Enfield in before actually using it to hunt. Several attempts were made by various members of the group to hit a target at about 100'. Nobody even came close. They realized that all their shots had gone way high. For those of you who have not seen a long gun from that era, the sights are flipped up and the aiming 'V' is slid up and down the sight depending on the range of the target. They had set the range for 100'.

They knew something was wrong but they didn't know what, so fortunately they decided not to use the gun. Later, it was explained to them that they had used sulphur powder as opposed to the black powder for which the gun was designed. Sulphur powder has a lot more kick so of course the bullets were pushed much higher than the sights intended. The real issue was not the inability of the sights to deal with the sulphur powder, but the fact that the gun didn't explode in their faces from the extra forces generated by the more modern gun powder. Fortunately the gun remained intact.

Bear:

Heck!! Makes my 1896 Lee Enfield MK1 Long Tom look positively new!!

The Canadian Rangers are a group of quasi-military people who patrol Canada's far north. They are about to receive new weapons which have been specifically designed for use in cold temperatures. They will be state-of-the-art. That's great news for them because up until now they have been using Lee Enfields and they will still be using the Lee Enfields well into 2018 until the new rifles become available! Lee Enfields were first used around 1895. That means that the Canadian Rangers are using technology that is more than 120 years old. The forum rules prevent me from commenting further.

By the way, I have a Snider Enfield that I was told by my family dates from the Boer War. The bore is about the same size as a 12 gauge shotgun! I believe it is one of the earliest examples of a breach loader. The original design was done in the 1850s. It also has a 3 edged bayonnet. The triangular wounds were supposedly much more difficult to treat. Nasty!

Gidday Chloe, could I please have a couple of very long glasses of something cool and refreshing. A neighbour has had some small trees taken down and as he uses heat pumps for heating wondered if I would like the wood. I didn’t need to be asked twice! However after moving all the timber from his place and splitting and stacking most of it, I’m wacked. Reckon I’ve ended up with about a cord of free firewood though.

Good evening diners,

Flo a tall frosty beer for me please.

How mud I love the on the water pic. Looks great.

I got the broken nozzle part out of the airbrush. Just needed to use these stubby nosed pliers I've had for years. I'll order new parts soon and begin airbrushing again not to long from now.

 Evening Diners!

Flo, Ed and I will have a Beer please. Yes Flo I know I am late but I was posting on the main page.

Work was nothing special. Only 2 customers in 5 hours. Highlite of the day was when a woman called at 25 minutes till closing. She asked "what time did I close" I told her I leave at 5:00 PM. She told me the town she was in and asked "do you think I will make it there in time"? She was 35 minutes away so I told here No. Said she was going to try so I waited till 5:05 then I blew out of the store. Glad she did not make it, it was a great day here and I wanted some daylight when I got home.

Felt great when I got home! While I would have loved to work on the trains I had some Honey Do's that I have been putting off. My wife is tickled I got them done and so am I. I was tired of hearing about them.

Train Front Ran the Penn SD 7 I am leasing from Ed. Decent running engine and it has sound! Well, there is no sound decoder but it still makes sound anyway. Laugh I have a few ideas to make the engine quiter. Still a great engine. Besides with running 2 sound engine hardly hear it.

Time to walk Sparkie The Rocket Dog.

 Ken

Any old timers here rembemer where I got this engine?

Evening Diners,

I went to Sierra Vista yesterday for a quilt shop hop. A shop hop is when you go to each store that participants in it. With each store stamps your book and gives a small gift. Sometimes with or not a store discount, another reason to spend money.

On the layout front I decided to put a small abandoned line. The idea of abandoned line was to make look larger. Since my downtown scene will be to small (probably). I can't tell unless I buy buildings and track. The track was going to be use old Atlas embedded into the street and particle apart in places. I don't know if I going to use switch track connecting the old line or placing a straight track forgetting the switch all together.

Afternoon Folks!

Oooooo, ooooooo, oooooooh!  There is one of those sticky buns left that Lion brought in.....  Well, I will have that and a hot cup of decaf for lunch please!  Thank you Mr. Feline!  Him is good cat.....

Been mostly just taking it easy so far today.  Little by little putting away all the stuff from the NMRA Meet yesterday.  Evidently the clinics and the layouts went over well with attendees.

If you can stand one more photo of seneca lake, here is one of my favorites taken back in 2008 at Camp Whitman (church camp) Music Camp of a few of our campers riding the "Banana Boat" one evening.  The Banana Boat is an inflatable that was towed behind our chase boat and could give a quite interesting ride....  They loved to back track across the wake from the powerboat.  Anyway the Banana Boat is spotlighted by sunset over the lake.  enjoy!

We got about 3" of rain here in Geneva over the last 3 days.  Nice to see the sun again and not have to watch the siphon down cellar all the time....

Back to getting some items out away.  Need to go out and bring in the Sunday Paper and go grocery shopping later as well.

Have a great day.
