Good evening all.

Zoe - Order of BBQ wings, a Coke, and, any more of that yummy looking pie Steven showed? I will take a slice. Thanks!

Garry - I will watch it with ya! Sorry, I know Cubs fans have been very long in their waiting... I enjoyed the game though! Smile, Wink & Grin

Waiting to see what records get broken next in the Fall Classic. (Aka World Series) Both teams broke a record, with Cleveland pitcher getting 8K's in the first 3 innings, and with the Cubs Schwarber getting his first hit of the year in game1. And, Cleveland's manager broke a record, going the most wins without a loss in the World Series, with a 9-0 record.

So far, looks like game2 will be in tonight, despite weather issues.

Cudaken - Might just be Sears..... But the Hometown version.... But I will never tell.... [;-)] Whistling

Dave - Thanks, now if someone will keep me! Hoping the new job lasts a long time... Getting kinda tired of hitting the bricks to look for new ones! First two lasted 4 and 10 years, respectively, last one just 1&1/2... Hoping for a bit longer this time!

Ed, Johnboy, others - Thanks! Hoping that it will be good.

Well, time to go back to the basesball game.

Hope all are well, and enjoy the night!

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could sure use a hot cup of decaf and a piece of that Apple Pie A'la mode that Steven broght in earlier....  Thank you Ma'am.

Been multitasking all day...  Spent most of it trying to correct a major problem on the spreadsheet that has all the addresses and gift information for the Scholarship Fund raising (MLK Committee).  Somehow a bunch of addresses got mixed up and were incorrect.  I think it had to do with when I disagregated the data for printing in the Scholarship Dinner Booklet last Spring...  Took me about 6 hours to get everything updated.  Right now I am skipping the Boy Scout District Committee Meeting.  There are only 27 hours in a day you know!

Talked with the gent who is the webmaster for our NMRA Division site.  The company we are with has made a whole lot of "Upgrades" (that is what they call it) that seem to be done only as a way to net them a whole lot of $$$$ and require us now to use and pay for proprietory software.  The webmaster is a dentist who simply does not have time to spend learning a whole new way of updating the site, so we have agreed to just let our page go (it needs to renewed very soon anyway) and see what can be done through the new Region once we get moved to them.  They may have a way for us to get a part of theirs to use....  I will be looking for someone who may have the skills to be a new webmaster as well...  Fun and games.

My son from Chicago arrives tomorrow late afternoon and we are planning to go out to dinner.  The rest of this weekend will be various celebrations for my #1 son to celebrate tunring 50!  I do feel very old.

Have some parts for a small wayside station kit in the paint booth drying.  better go and get them out of that.

Angel - How many sqaure foot is your layout ? N?HO ?

If you're talking about the pause hold I been talking about for the last week. The layout was planned on a HCD. I model in N. Maybe I'll show a picture when it's almost done.

I found out with Walthers flyer email that the N Thrall 48' well cars are not coming out next month, but in January of next year.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, Ed and I will have a Beer please.

Not the best day off I have ever had.

1 Looked at the budget and credit card deibt. I need to make about a extra $125.00 a week to stay even at this point.

2 Need to take out $200.00 from savings to make the house payment.

3 My car battery was dead when I went to do my running. Not sure if it is the battery or if I left the interior light on. Had my big battery charger outside all ready so that was not a big deal

4 Tried to apply Dominos for part time but I think my appaction was high jacked I think?

5 Tried to reset the decoders in my BLI Blueline RSD 15. I swear at one point I could read and write the CV's with the PR-3?

YGW Not sure it will fix my daughter problem in the long run. Far as my feet? Whistling

Ed Great to see you in the dinner again. Thanks to you I now know how to program on the fly using Decoder Pro.

Trains are running great! They are hauling Butt, turning into a Train Race.

YGW, I grew up in Amissville. Place right on 211 not far from 229 intersection. I lived there from age 1 in 1985, until I moved to Lancaster PA in 2005. My dad used to work for home builders in Northern Virginia.

Steve, that apple pie ala mode looks delicious.

Garry - Layout this year ? I hope to be building teh layout starting in January if the dang permit will ever be issued Sigh

ED - I am a Senior Project Manager for a builder. We do it a bit different than most. We purchase the land, develop the land, design the houses, build them and then perform teh service work and bond release. Most builders do not do this nuts to bolts. Most buy finished lots put together by a "land developer" Our PMs perform the entire job from start to finish vs. being specialized in one area such as "front end superintendent or "back in superintendent" or "site superintendent"

FRRYKid - A county west of here a a guy got  DUI on a horse in the town.

Dave - My hat hoes off to you. Anyone who is a manager in retail has a special place in heaven. Dont know how you did that. It was my great grandfather not my grandfather. Thank God.

Herrinchoker - Did you ever get hooked ? Ten seconds is not very long ! Do you know anyone who did ?Thanks for expalining those terms.

Ken - Will she be okay long term after the surgery ? Hope your foot gets better .

Alvie - What part of Culpeper did you live in ? I used to live on the east side over near the Rappahonock river in Amissville area. I would not have thought the income would be that high in PA.

Richard - Hope your neck gets better soon. I have had enck issues in the past they are not fun!

Angel - How many sqaure foot is your layout ? N?HO ?

Todays history qoutes :

It has been a source of great pain to me to have met with so many among our opponents who had not the liberality to distinguish between political & social opposition, who transferred at once to the person the hatred they bore to his political opinions.

Thomas Jefferson

I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I traveled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.

Just curious.  Are you on a cell phone a lot?

No. Maybe a couple of times a day, and almost always with headset. I try to keep the phone away from my head as much as possible.

I do think my pillow could be a contributing factor. I may be in market for a new one.

Cell phones are worse than sleeping on how your neck feels.  As you age there is degenerative arthritis everywhere, little bone spurs and the like, except there isn't much extra room in your neck.  If it's bad enough, you can have permanent weakness.

One grandfather died of black lung.  My earliest memories are his spray atomizer that looked like an old perfume sprayer.  My other grandfather died of a stroke.  In those days they treated hypertension with the Duke Rice Diet.  Oddly the diet became a treatment for obesity in the 1970's and is still around.

Friend of mine has a ship named for his grandfather.  He got invited to the lauching and gets copies of the ships' newspaper.

Found a new train webcam.  Chama!  http://www.coloradonewmexicosteamtrain.org/camera-portal-horizontal.htm

Good morning . ( Sort of)

I waitied my entire life for the Cubs to get into the world series, and they lose the first game 6-0. ... Sigh

Except of that, things are okay.

Ed .... Sounds like somebody who should know better. I know a similar situation except it was a car accident caused by a drinking doctor. .... I do not like drunk drivers.

FR RY ... There are probably similar laws here which would include driving a tractor. Perhaps it does not apply if on private property, but I don't know. .... I guess it would be worse if my neighbor was drinking while operating a chain saw.

Enough of that.

With winter approaching, who has plans for working on their layouts? I am continuing work on my layout. I am building the final section which is large enough to be a stand alone layout. My rural scene is part of it, and there is much work remaining with other scens to be built.

Not really sure. It was a little stiff for a couple of days, then last Wednesday, WHAM, it wouldn't move. Doctor said something (activity, position, etc.) had caused some inflamation and prescribed the course of cortisone.

Mornin' Diners!

I have been away a while and— wow! I see the menu has changed! Looks like I'll be having the fried mush with sausage gravy and two eggs, sunny side up! Lots of boiler-wash coffee for a chaser, please Flo!

cudaken
Ed Did we make you mad? Or just bored with the Dinner? Thank you for your answers on the main page!

Not at all, Ken. It just seems that the farther behind I got on all the news it was tough to find a jumping-in point. Lots to catch up on!

Mr. B. I'm glad you are getting the "itch" to work on model railroad projects! I enjoy seeing your work.

I see there has been some discussion about Liberty Ships. Not long ago I saw a movie called "Man From Frisco" which kind of showcased the methods of Henry J. Kaiser. Great film and a fascinating look into the birth of the Liberty Ships.

ROR I can sympathize with your neck pain to some extent. I have a "fixation" about finding the right pillow to sleep on. I believe many neck ailments are caused during uncomfortable and awkward sleeping posture. Some mornings I feel like my neck has been twisted like I was in an old Bugs Bunny cartoon! I'm glad to hear you're doing better.

Rick, That's great news about starting your new job. I hope it leads to a successful and long-lived career for you.

Moe Larry... I don't often whistle on the toilet but when I do...    Look Out Ick!

Garry— That tragedy with the mower is sure disturbing. My sister-in-law has a friend whose husband went out on a four-wheeler quad while his wife was out of town. She came home and couldn't find him around the house. Sure enough, he was in the woods with the quad on top of him! He must have been there for over two days! Um... alcohol was involved! He was a surgeon, maybe someone who should have known better?

Cats. I have been contemplating changing out some of my BLI sound units, too. I recently installed a Loksound decoder in an old QSI Life-Like 2-10-2. ESU doesn't quite have the sound files for US steam up to chuff. I like WOWsound for steam sound.

I first learned of the history of The Sullivans when I toured the Fletcher Class destroyer named after the brothers (DD-537) in Buffalo, New York back in 2003.

http://buffalonavalpark.org/exhibits/ships/

If anyone plans a visit to the Buffalo area they should plan a day at the Naval Museum Yes !

What a great bit of history. When I saw the scene in Saving Private Ryan where George C. Marshall learns of the death of the "Sullivan" (Ryan) brothers it really choked me up. Still does...

YGW, I gather that you are in some aspect of the real estate business when I read about your—sometimes stressful—encounters. If I may ask (as a relative new-comer to the Diner) what capacity you are engaged in? Just curious. It would help me understand your day-to-day tribulations.

Well, Train front...

I have a few friends visiting on November 11th so I'm trying to get a few things straightened up on the layout. I have had an open helix that is but bare plywood so I just decided to tackle the making-of-a-mountain to cover it up.

I have been busy with many other projects around the homestead and that has partly been behind my recent absence here...

I'll fill in the blanks as time permits.

Prayers and well-wishes to all Angel and I hope anyone reading this has a safe, happy and healthy day!

Regards, Ed

Garry - Drinking and driving never go well together. Even on a lawn mower. I know of a guy who was given a DUI on a riding mower !

In both Montana and North Dakota, a person can get a BUI (Biking Under the Influence) as bicycles are regulated under the motor vehicle code. Also in Montana, one can also get a RUI (Riding [a horse] Under the Influence even if the horse is driving!). Yes there are places in Montana that are that rural.

yougottawanta

FRRYKid - Have any pictures ?

Not yet. I will post pictures when I get completely finished with it. I figure it will probably be Monday or so before I get it finished between w*rk and all the stuff I have to do at the ranch as well as getting certain supplies that need to be ordered in. (Track should be here Monday.)

herrinchoker

The last FFG I worked on was The Sullivans, named  after the brothers ( five I think ) that were all serving on one destroyer, and were killed when the ship went down, early 1944?. This caused a change in the War Department not consolidating members of one family in one unit.

I did a quick wikipedia check and found out something interesting: The ship mentioned by herrinchoker is actually the second Navy ship to bear the name The Sullivans. (I didn't even know that.)

From wikipedia:

  • The Navy named two destroyers The Sullivans to honor the brothers: The Sullivans (DD-537 comissioned 30 September 1943) and The Sullivans (DDG-68 commisioned 19 April 1997). DD-537 was the first American Navy ship ever named after more than one person. The motto for both ships was "We stick together."
  • Al Sullivan's son served on board the first USS The Sullivans. His grandmother christened the first ship. The second USS The Sullivans was christened by Al's granddaughter Kelly Ann Sullivan Loughren.

Odd, but interesting facts.

Congratulations on getting a new (and hopefully better) job! I worked in retail management for a long time and you sound like the sort of person who we were constantly searching for but rarely finding.

Interesting information about the various gun powders. Thanks

YGW:

Your grandfather's premature death was truly unfortunate. Both my grandfathers died early. One died from pneumonia at 58. That was entirely preventable but he refused to go to the hospital until it was too late. The other died from syphilis, which was entirely preventable if had he managed to keep certain parts of his anatomy in his pants. Both were decorated WWI vets so I am still proud of them.

YGW/HON30/BEAR

Oil canning,(think of an old metal quart oil can that has been crushed on one side) is caused by running a heavy fiberglass boat at high speed from the top of one wave, to the top of the next. Over time the fore'n'aft hull stiffners will crack, allowing the hull to cave in,such as it were. If not repaired by refastening the stringers, the glass in the hull will break, with the obvious results.

Bandit fishing is using a heavy weight on the bottom of the fishing line, with ten or so hooks placed above, dropped to the bottom, and as the boat drifts along the weight is bounced off the bottom, (sometimes not) the line is fastened to a reel powered by a hydraulic motor, or is fastened to an electric motor to retrieve the line. It is a easier way to fish than using a traul having 250+hooks on it. Setting a traul is dangerous as the boat is moving, and the baited hooks must be flipped out of the basket they are stored in. Because the main line of the traul is anchored to the bottom should you get caught by one of the hooks going over the stern of the boat the options open are very few to the person who is snagged. We always kept a VERY sharp knife on our chest that could be grabbed with either hand. At best you might have ten seconds to cut the leader, ground line, or the offending body part free. Or drown.

Bear.

The last FFG I worked on was The Sullivans, named  after the brothers ( five I think ) that were all serving on one destroyer, and were killed when the ship went down, early 1944?. This caused a change in the War Department not consolidating members of one family in one unit.

The Snyder was a rifle of .577 cal. adopted by the British Army in 1866, and saw service until 1901. It fired a "paper-patch bullet" from a necked cartridge. The base of the bullet had waxed paper wrap where the cartridge was crimped. At that time it was replaced by the Martini-Henry rifle. The Snyder was used by some of the colonial armies until the early 1930s. (India)

The .577 cal. is very close to the bore of a 20ga. shotgun.

Black powder can be smokeless--sulpher is what causes the smoke. Leave out the sulpher, and the only thing showing is a light fog. If the Snyder was not loaded with true smokeless (nitro-cellulose base) it might have been loaded with black powder-less sulpher.

The formula for this is as follows:

Legened

KNO3----saltpeter

C7H4O----char-coal

S---------sulpher

K2S-----potassiumsulfide (responsible for the white smoke)

K2CO3---potash

CO----carbon monoxide

CO2---carbon dioxide

N2----nitrogen

the formula for black powder with sulpher is :

4KNO3+C7H4O+2S------2K2S+4CO2+3CO+2H2O+2N2

without:

6KNO3+C7H4O-------3K2CO3+CO2+6CO+2H2O+2N2

Or put in another way:

100 parts saltpeter+18 parts coal+16 parts sulpher= standard black powder.

100 parts saltpeter+24 parts coal==smokeless black powder.

When I make black powder all my measurements are by VOLUME----

The downside is the number of miss-fires in my flintlock, with my caplock this is not a problem. The addition of sulpher decreases the flash point of the powder making ignitiion easier. I went so far as to make a mini-grinder out of rock maple. cut a grove with a router, and took 4F black priming powder, added a quantity of sulfer, ground for a period of time in an attempt to create a "hotter"charge for the flash pan to ignite the sulferless black I had as the main charge. Didn't work.

All of my BP guns are reproduction, not original. I have a 1847 Colt Walker, were it original, and in the condition it is in, the value would be North of  $800.000.00.

Finally turned cold, front came through and we have had two days of high wind, 42 in the daytime, it has now dropped to 33F, 00:04 hrs. 10/26/16 Kiss the flowers good-by tonight. Got hit yesterday with the dreaded HD List. Got the garden, flower beds, crops (squash mostly, some tomatoes) ready for the next seige. Worked on the wood pile some, will do more tomorrow after I throw some more tar on the roof over the deck, have a leak that I have been chasing for two years now.

My nephew sent me a thumb drove of all the pictures he took when he hiked the AT this summer. The boy has a good eye for photography, many of his picts. are really stunning. ( I liked the ones of the rattlesnakes and the copperheads--lunch on the go as it were. I asked why he did not clean, wrap around his hiking staff-roast-and then "Pick-N-Eat" while he walked, skins make nice hat bands as well.)

Dog is sitting by my chair groaning, and looking at the stairs, bed time!!!

More later, prayers for those in need.

 Evening Diners

Flo, I will have a Beer and if Ed shows up give him one as well.

Rick I am very happy for you! Far as why they canned you, well that you could have won! If you did not like the old job, well I would not have fought it. Hum, selling tools and appliances. Is it Sears Hardware?

YGW My daughter goes under the knife Nov 11 th. She will be off work for 2 months and will not be with us for Thanks Giving for the first time ever. She will be on a liquid diet for how long I do not know.

Feet Front Still hit and miss. While hammer toe ulcer is gone, big blister that turned into calluis is gone yesterday night I found a new blister on the left big toe! Sigh I hope Hanger Clinic can get these new shoes right! They are causing more problems than the old shoes that I am wearing right now.

Work Front Got out late due to a later customer. Sigh It was a good sale at $1000.00 but I made more from the over time.

Ed Did we make you mad? Or just bored with the Dinner? Thank you for your answers on the main page!

Trains are running well and I am out of things to type.

Happy Tuesday night,

Ricky, sorry to hear you got fired from your old job, but glad to hear you got a new one. Hope it works out.

Rideonroad. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

YGW, median household income is about 56k. I used to live in Northern Virginia, in Culpepper county. I moved to Lancaster about 11-years ago.

I sent email to Broadway Limited about valve gear assemblies for one of my K4s. Here's hoping I'll get it back on track. Pun intended.

I'm debating on buying TCS Wow decoders and converring my other BLI steamers over from the P2 and P3 decoders they have now. I don't mind nixing the smoke units.

Doctor said something (activity, position, etc.) had caused some inflamation and prescribed the course of cortisone. I cannot wait to be done with it. Angel - What style quilts ? Do they follow a Western or American Indian style ?

I don't really follow a style. I believe some people do follow that particular Indian style.

My Union Pacific branch layout will be put on hold again. I realized this morning with preorders coming next month I'll not have enough money.

Don't worry, the project will resume sometime next year.

When I redone this layout planning I should have realized the final outcome. Instead of trying to quickly buy other items to build it.

I problem that shouldn't had happened. This is what happens when you lose focus on other things.

Hello all

Been another another interesting day. Surprisingly busy. Thought it was going to be slow. Non stop phone calls, several inspections, meetings with HO ....But all in all a good day at w**k if those two words can go together. w**k and good that is.

Douglas - Sorry you are feeling bad. Hope you get better soon.

Angel - What style quilts ? Do they follow a Western or American Indian style ?

Richard - What happened to your neck ?

Garry - Drinking and driving never go well together. Even on a lawn mower. I know of a guy who was given a DUI on a riding mower !

Ricky - Good luck finding a new job

MoeLarry - Whistling toilet ? What ? What is it whistling Dixie ? Yankee doodle ? Whistling

Bear - Oh. I would bet money that that decision has cost them money. But I am glad there is a USS ship there to help celebrate.

Dave - That is a wise choice. That is how my grandfathers father died. A gun exploded in his face

Jeremy - Hello glad you dropped in. Hope all is well in your life.

FRRYKid - Have any pictures ?

Tom - Is that N&W part of the heritage fleet ?

Ken - How is your daughter doing ? Is your foot healing ?

Henry, CG, Howmus , Lion ... Hey !

Todays qoutes :

I never considered a difference of opinion in politics,in religion, in philosphy, as a couse for withdrawing from a friend.

Thomas Jefferson

I think the difference is very great. An external tax is a duty laid on commodities imported; that duty is added to the first cost, and other charges on the commodity, and when it is offered to sale, makes a part of the price. If the people do not like it at that price, they refuse it; they are not obliged to pay it. But an internal tax is forced from the people without their consent, if not laid by their own representatives. The Stamp Act says, we shall have no commerce, make no exchange of property with each other, neither purchase nor grant, nor recover debts; we shall neither marry nor make our wills, unless we pay such sums, and thus it is intended to extort our money from us, or ruin us by the consequences of refusing to pay for it.

Ricky, great news

YGW you passed the test, here's a pic for you from today's Baltimore Sun, I think it's just an old stock pic to show the tunnel they are going to lower the tracks to accomodate double stack.

Good afternoon all.

Flo, a RBF, and a round of them for all. What's that? Why, to celebrate! Interview went great, I start first thing Monday morning. Smile

W**k - Starting new job, still in retail, first thing Monday morning. I will switch from selling clothes to tools and appliances. And, pay will be close to what I was making as an assistant manager while being only a salesman here. Add in commission and I could be making more money now than before. With less stress.

So, all is good. Smile

Hope everyone is well, and everyone has a great day!

Good morning ..

Ricky ... Sorry about the loss of the job. Good luck next door. It may be just what you want, and you may be just who they want.

Several days ago, my neighbor had an accident. His property has a steep incline into the lake with a grassy area above it. While mowing with his fancy John Deere tractor, he got to close to the edge. He and his tractor rolled over rocks and into the lake. He is still in the hospital. He always had a drink in his hand while operating his tractor, and that may have something to do with it.

Good morning all.

Flo - The blue-plate breakfast special, those waffles that Moelarrycurly4 brought in. And a tall OJ please, thanks. What's that? JaBear is buying? Oh, Thanks!

JaBear - Thanks! Yes, they were not doing things quite right. I do have a interview scheduled for this afternoon nearby, with a manager who wanted me right away, so we shall see how it goes. Appreciate the breakfast!

CudaKen - DM used the excuse that I had yelled at a idiot truck driver (last week....) who had made a threat to my safety, and then rudely hung up the phone on the idiot drivers boss. So, for my lack of respect, I was being let go. Now, the driver, had threatened me, and, he then was an idiot at the next two stores. (Sounds like the idiot driver was the problem here. 3 stores, 3 managers, all commented that this driver was acting like a huge idiot and was very disrespectful and trying to be intimidating in his actions and language....) DM said I should have just walked away from the driver, leaving him, and an open back room, unattended. (Bad idea, and against company rules!) And that I should have called in a complaint about the jerk. (Drivers boss.... Yep. This was a great scenario alright!) When the idiot drivers boss was on the phone, (for said complaint about said threat he made) he began yelling at me for holding up their delivery schedule. (Like I was the one who was wrong here!) I hung up the phone on him, as their delivery schedule is not my concearn, and I would not engage with him over it. DM said that I am not permitted to hang up on the drivers boss, as that is disrespectful, as is yelling at the driver. (But, I am allowed to walk away from them in person? Kinda like hanging up the phone on them, isn't it?????) Yet, when I called my DM that day for his assistance, he refused to answer the phone, leaving me to deal with both of the idiots myself.

This company has a mandatory arbitration clause, I might just use it, though I am unsure if I want to... Just put me back in the whole big mess all over again if I won the arbitration. Not sure if it is worth it.

W**k - Interview this afternoon, and the manager already wanted me, before the interview was even scheduled. Funny thing is, it is right next door to my old job! (They had placed a help wanted sign up yesterday, so I left my old job, walked in there and applied.) We shall see what they offer, and go from there.

Weather - Still cool, highs near 50, cloudy and breezy. Not bad considering the fact that it could be much cooler, and much whiter, out there right now.

Trains - Working on the SD40-2, will have it lighted, and up and running by tomorrow evening if all goes well.

Hope all are well, and everyone enjoy the day!

Goooood Morning all

Have some Waffle House waffles I have imported.

Off call! Now I can get back to other things like fixing the whistling toilet valve.

on the world series front, this will be a tough one for me as I like both the Cubs and The Indians.

Spent the evening building a new filter capacitor bank for a 1928 Atwater Kent radio for a customer.

Worked some over the past few weeks on wiring for the O scale layout at the museum here in town.

Gidday Zoe, a large glass of something refreshing, and would you please get Ricky what he wants and put it on my tab. Losing a job sux, but to be fair from your previous posts I’ve thought that your former  employers were running a bit of a Mickey Mouse outfit. I hope your good work ethic will be recognised quickly, and rewarded commensurately.

“I would love to see the Cubs win the World Series after all of the disappointing seasons they had when I was young and went to their games.”

Garry, I know enough about to baseball to know about the Cubs curse, (moral: don’t go getting on some ones goat), and that baseball is taken rather seriously in the US, but World Series!!! Really??!!! I have to have a bit of a laugh every time I see that phrase. Still I hope the Cubs come through for you and their other longsuffering fans.

"That is the first US ship in 33 years ! Why havent they been by more often ?"

YGW In 1984 the newly elected Labour Government barred the entry of nuclear powered or nuclear armed ships to New Zealand waters or ports. Given that the US had a policy of “neither confirm nor deny” all US Naval ships were therefore banned. When the “New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act” was passed in 1987, the US Government suspended its ANZUS Treaty obligations to New Zealand, downgrading us from allies to friends. However no matter what the posturing of politicians has been, and while they have been severely downgraded, military and intelligence ties have continued, and along with other nations the US Navy has been invited to join the Royal New Zealand Navy 75th anniversary review and as the USS Sampson has satisfied our current Prime Minister that it will not be in breach of our non nuclear policy, it will be the first visit of a US navy ship in 33 years.
