 Eveing Dinners

Flo, Beer please and yes I will take Ed and The Buick Guys tap!Big Smile

Thanks for the Beer always appreciated. Like Terry in Wisconsin, I also wonder about some major fault somewhere in your layout wiring? Over several years I have seen where you have had smoked decoders. What could be the underlying cause?

Ed and Terry My wiring sucks rail spikes! I was into HO scale slot cars when I got into trains. So not knowing any better I wired the then DC train layout like a HO slot car layout and all was fine. Then I went DCC, well Simon 66 came over and found a major flaw with the K-10 mining section and decoder cooking slowed down a lot.

Some of the layout more than likely will not pass the Quater Test and need more feeders. Plus the wires from my DB 150 is 18 feet long to the power blocks I use. (Use to use to MRC 3500 so each 3500 had it own block) If or when I know I will beable to keep the house and start a new layout I will wire it the way it should be.

Now, Ed and Terry question for you. How many hours a day do you run your layout? When I got started, well I ran my layout about 40 hours a week. I have now down to about 21 hours a week. I like long trains, little over NMRA weight (free rolling stock) still have some 18" turns and pull a Train Line track cleaning car on all of the trains!  Each track cleaning cars is about the same as pulling 15 free rolling stock car. Good chances I am just wearing the motors out, but maybe not?

CN Charile is the cancer thing something new or have you been battling for a while? Either way, I Angel for you.

Dougles (The Buick Guy for new folks) I will take you up on your offer sort of soon. Main thing is for me to dig through the PM's to find your number.

Ed I saw on Train Stuff web site they have new B&O SD 7's for $89.00, are they the same as my B&O SD'S? Guessing if anyone knows at the diner it would be you.

Ball Bearing Front Getting better, still not right but heading in the right drection! Big Smile

Galaxy I hope you are still out there watching, like to see you back again!

 Later,Ken

Hey all

Dad is napping right now. I have the graveyard shift with him tonight. They had him up standing on his one good leg. He looks better. Rehab therapist said he may be in here ten weeks before he gets out. Sigh but he is making progress. Which it is amazing he is still alive after being hit by a car doing 55+mph.

Thanks for all of the prayers and good wishes.

Ken - just to crazy didn't get the cars sent out today. Will try this coming week.

Ulrich - will say a prayer for you. Hope the morning finds you better

I wonder why they test down the roundhouses? Do you think they get taxed on the building if it remains up ? Removal and haul of a building that size is crazy expensive. The dump feed would be astronomical alone.

Evening everyone,

Sorry I haven't been in but things have kept us very busy with funeral arrangements and contacting family. Thank you for all the kindness and heartfelt condolences. Everyone is doing much better too.

YGW: hope your father is doing better, sorry but I didnt read anything the other night and missed what happened.

CudaKen: hope your feeling better.

Prayers to all in need and for those I may have missed.

I'll have a RBF and sit in the back for a while. Flo can you wake me tonight, the snoring is going to chase everyone off.

No train stuff past few weeks but I should get time this week to work on my bridge project I have posted elsewhere, will update later this week hopefully.

Good Afternoon, Fellow Diners Smile

I see a few new specials on the chalkboard by the door! They all sound delicious and the BLT with extra thick bacon and extra Miracle Whip sounds like it will sate my appetite, some hand-cut fries AND to top it off, that ice cold beer, thanks to Ken!

YGW, It is a sad reality to see so many of our roundhouses and factory buildings razed like that. Sometimes I look at Google Earth and see areas that I was familiar with and today, there is nothing left, just litter-strewn weeds! A result of the "new direction" the business and economy of today has taken. Below is the PRR roundhouse at Mingo Junction, Ohio.

I offer my continued prayers to ease your father's suffering.

Thanks for the welcome, Douglas! I have been peeking into the front window of the diner from time-to-time but with that j*b and other obligations I didn't have the time to actually pull up a chair. Glad I stopped in.

I should look into ad-blocker, I use Malware Bytes and I'm pretty satisfied with the protection it offers. I have also been having frustrations with this and several other sites as well. For the past two days Photobucket was acting all goofy. Problem is compounded by not knowing if the fault is at their end, or the ISP or on my end?

Must have been a Photobucket problem, they seem to do frequent "upgrades" to their site, since as of early this morning everything is back to normal with no intervention on my part. The MR site was acting weird as well. No quote feature, On IE I had no toolbar in the reply pane, in Chrome I couldn't even copy/paste!

Ken, Thanks for the Beer always appreciated. Like Terry in Wisconsin, I also wonder about some major fault somewhere in your layout wiring? Over several years I have seen where you have had smoked decoders. What could be the underlying cause? I wonder if a reset would clear that slow-turning motor. Seems to me that I had that problem with some older DH-121-123 decoders and it was cured by a reset.

Well, the promised "Cool Front" has moved through NE Ohio so instead of 92 and humid it's WAY down to 86 and slightly less humid and a whopping .06" of rain!

I'll be stopping in later for a night-cap!

Cheers to all,

Ed

Thanks.  I disabled AdBlock for this site and I could quote again.  Then, of course, I had to see what happened if I re-enabled it.  I can still quote.

MisterBeasley - The "Javascript<void>" error is a common one, but not serious. Actually in most cases this is a good thing. Java can be used to seriously damage things. Some browsers (you say Firefox in your case) have "pop-up" blockers that will block the java code from allowing a worthless window from 'popping up'. Javascript errors are caused by blockers (if not by bad programming).

You mentioned you use Ad-Block. Darn good for you!!!! Everyone should use it! However, its a good bet this is whats knocking down the java commands not your browser. When I first started posting a year or so ago I had the same exact error you have now during the posting process here on MR's sites. I would lose the whole lower tool bar and couldnt do anything like post a link or picture... No Buttons! It was the content blocker in ad-block.

Bare in mind Im on Windows 7 not XP, and I use IExplorer not Firefox. All I had to do to clear this error was turn off the "Content Blocker" in Ad-Block for the page. Problem solved. I hate to say it but yes, even MR uses some questionable programming code as far as Ad-Block is concerned. And more than likely Ad-Block is catching it and blocking it.

To turn off the content blocker I will describe as best I can. Do know there may be differences between what I see and what you see since we are using different browsers. The process is still the same - turn off the blocker on this page.

In the url bar (where you type inet addresses like 'http://mrr.trains.com") you should see a blue circle with a line through it at the very end of the bar. Normaly this logo is red and is placed over something to be blocked or not used. Much like a 'do not litter' or 'no smoking' sign. In Ad-Block's case, its a pastel blue color.

If you click on this a small windows appears mentioning the 'Content Blocker'. At the bottom should be a button that willl let you either turn it on, or off. In this case - turn it off. If the webpage does not automatically refresh (it does on mine, but may not on yours), Then press F5 to refresh the page or right click on page and select refresh.

You should be now able to go about your business. If none of the above works, OR with your version of windows and  browser this option is not available.... then turn off Ad-Block altogether for the MRR site ONLY!

To do that click on the Red colored 'stop sign' shaped icon with "ABP" on it, that resides in the lower right of your browser status bar. It will ask you to "Disable everywhere" (never select this option) or "Disable on CS.Trains.Com" (select this one).

Using the first step with adjusting the content blocker fixed my problem. I am able to do anything the page is set up to do. AND, ads are still blocked thank goodness which is most important since Ad-Block is still on. Hope this helps.

Afternoon,all. 79f and mostly sunny.

Sorry to hear of everyone's trials and tribulations.

There is a live band playing at the sandbar on the lake about a quarter mile from our house. We can hear them, they sound pretty good. Lots of horns and such. Mostly oldies rock .

KEN: you sure go through decoders/engines. Have you checked for any underlying layout problems? My layout is pretty big and I have yet to burn up a decoder or engine.

Seemed like a good day to start a batch of trees, so I did!

trimmed into a tree shape and trunks painted. Next comes hairspray and ground foam.

That's all for now!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the #2 Special this morning.  Over easy on the eggs, bacon, homefries, and a double order of the sourdough toast.  Oh a 30 cup urn on Seneca Lake Blend Dark Raostr coffee would be gopod to wash that down with, please.

We got some RAIN overnight.  I think anyways.  Was supposed to be in the form of thunderboomers.  I didn't hear anything (I'm deaf anyway...) but Manét did climb up on the bed and ask to get cuddled for a while. LOL  The State here in NY has fianlly declared an official Drought Warning for the Central NY/Finger Lakes Area.  That means farmers that lose their crops due to the dry weather can get some help for the loss.

I went down to the Credit Union to take out some pictures of dead presidents to spend next week....  On the way home I stopped at the corn stand over at a strip mall near my house to get a couple ears of sweet corn.  Some high school kid was working there. I haven't seen him there before so toady may be his first day of work.  Place was busy and he was finishing up a ladys order of several dozen ears (good day for a picnic actually).  I grabbed to ears that seem good and handed him a $5 and said, "Here is a picture of Abe, you can just give me 4 George's back.  He gives me a completely blank stare.....  I said, "see this a picture of Abe Lincoln, the corn is 50¢ each so I need 4 pictures of Goerge Washington back.  Blank look.......  After a bit more time, another explaination, this time with another lady roaring... it sinks in!  The kid couldn't stop laughing...  Told me he just has to tell his dad that one.  I explained it is an old Boy Scout thing.  We are not allowed to buy or sell patches but are supposed to trade them.  So some people trade them for "Pictures of Dead Presidents!".

#1 Granddaughter finally gets to celebrate her 9th. birthday tomorrow.  Her birthday was over a month ago, but after having a party inculding her little friends and a family vactaion weekend where she wanted to go, they totally forgot that the rest of us might want to give her some presents and celebrate it.  So tomorrow we are going out to one of her favorite places to eat and then will likey go back to the house for brithday cake and present openings.

I am going to spend most of today cleaning the deck and the back porch here.  Both those places will likely get used when I host the faculty reunion in 3 weeks.  I am pretty much at a standstill with the layout until I get some more HO scale 1" x 4" lumber to make the fence.  I may get the last piece of plywood cut and ready to install as soon as I have the scenery done....

Well...  Started this post over an hour ago and had a call from my son and afew emails I needed to reply instantly to.  So hope you all have a great day!

Good Afternoon!

Just stopping by for a moment. I am battling heart issues since this morning. My BP is playing roller coaster again, so I am up to nothing today.

I hope tomorrow will be a better day!

Ken, sorry to hear about your 'problem'. I am in just the opposite situation. The hormone drug I am on for my prostate cancer is shrinking my prostate which is enlarged. It also stops the cancer. In any event it also shrinks other bits. This is all in prep for having it removed likely in November or December.

It also makes you want to shop for shoes for three hours.

I get that as well and can click on it just fine. Make sure you're not running a script blocker of some sort. Given Firefox auto updates, it could have changed as the result of an update.

 Evening Diners

Flo, a cushion and a Beer Please. No Flo, I am not intrested in a cantaloupeSuper Angry I all ready have one! Sad All so get Ed and the Buick Guy a Beer as well. No Flo, I don't need any nuts with the beer.

First thank you all for your best wishes. Sure can tell me mainly have Male Members here at the diner.

Big Ones Front Fastest I have ever been help at a ER. I was in and out in 2 hours. Seems the cantaloupe has a infection, I wounder if I got that when I visited the VA Tuesday? Used the rest room twice and I sit down when I take a leak. Shut off control is not as good as it use to be.

Got my meds in record time! I use Shnunks and was in and out in under 10 minutes? Norm is 45 minutes.

Did not get my store open till 12:05. I was fine with that, I left a note that said I made not open till 1:00 PM anyway. Took my med and the day just went down hill from there! Started hurting in the shoulders, felt like I may have a fever and just felt like ash pit!  It was slow today, so at 6:45 I called the main offices and tod them I was Punching Out At 7:00 PM and not 8:00 pm. Not sure if it was the med or the infection that made me feel bad.

YGW I have heard minor heart attacks are not life threating. A friend of mine had 3 of them till he started having problems. Guess you are feeling like Job about right now.

Train Front Looks like I killed the Proto 2000 774 B&O SD 7. While the motor turns, it turns real sloooow. Only pulled .90 amps so I hosed the motor with CRC and well test it tonight. With some luck, it was just over oilded but I ran the SD's hard.

 Time for bed.

Good Evening,

Ken, sorry to hear about your 'problem'. I am in just the opposite situation. The hormone drug I am on for my prostate cancer is shrinking my prostate which is enlarged. It also stops the cancer. In any event it also shrinks other bits. This is all in prep for having it removed likely in November or December.

Been thinking about summers when I was a lad of 10 or 11. My parents rented a cottage at Victoria Beach which is a beach community on Lake Winnipeg. It is unique in that no vehicles are permitted during July and August except taxis and service. Bikes are the main mode of transport. In any event CN ran daily passenger trains there and in the summer of '58 they were hauled by a Pacific usually #5097. It was great fun to ride down to  the station for the arrival of the train. Sometimes the crew would let kids ride the passenger cars when they turned the train on the wye. We moved to a small town in NW Ontario when my parents started a hardware store business in 1961 and there on a siding with a string of other locos heading for the scrap line was 5097.

Well time to head down to the workshop as I need to re-solder some on the connections in the tender of the light mountain.

Cuda Ken  You are too old for mumps.  Everyone in the diner had had it.

Mr B I had a bike with a seat that would make me numb.  Very disturbing feeling.  I now have a seat that is split in the middle.

Hello Railfans!

Top of the bleeding hot-bright day to yas! Flo, you prolly ought to tell Mel to order extra ice. Your gonna be serving alot of it. Except for Ken, who doesnt like ice in his Beer. So tel Mel to order extra of that too!

Folks, Imma do my best to catch up here so bare with me....

YGW - very sorry to hear your father is still on the rough side of recovery. Best wishes for a much better recovery from here on out for him.

In last months post you asked if i moved 'to' fRednecksburg. No, actually i moved 'from' the redlight capital of the world to NC. Though this is supposed to be somewhat temporary, I am not going back there! 50 years was enough.

Havent given much thought as to where I want to end up after my task here is done. I will say though 'Gopher-Hole' Idaho looks very promising. Ive just gotta get away from the hub bub of city life, ya know? Id like to go where there are more train tracks than there are people, and its illegal for a redlight to exist within a 100 mile radius of me.

Ken - no matter what type of access you have, phone or cable (dish or dsl too), you will have to do something with your 'network adapter' in XP. Enabling it ofcourse gives you access, disabling it turns it off. Im not really understanding what you need (because if your posting here its working ok) but you got my number. Pick an evening when you have about an hour free time and hit me up. I will see what i can do to help ya out.

Ulrich - YES! The Saurer Alpenwagon - awesome looking. I love that model! The layout is looking nice aswell. Also a very nice job on the opening of the month. Keep up the fine work my friend!

Ed - You shoulda been a patron of the diner already! Your gonna fit right in here. Its gonna be a welcome sight to see your contributions. Alot of pictures posted here that reflect some mighty fine work, information, and knowledge. More so now that your here. Welcome to the show!

Flo - set a place for Ed here and show him the dessert list. Ya know a man will sit a spell if hes got a nice piece of pie in front of him.

In General - Mr. Beasley just stated....

I Use AdBlock.....

There is no instrument made that can measure my indifference to that statement! I second AND third that comment. And without drawing the direct ire of cousin Vinny, I will not state the whys and wherefores of the fact you should use it, JUST USE IT!

For the weather followers, eh, its hot and bright. Blah Blah! How many days is it til were griping about the cold? Laugh

Railroad front - my drive-by railfan moments so far the last couple weeks aint been to bad. I caught a couple NS units snoozing for a day on an overpass. One happened to be an "Operation Lifesaver" unit. Today i went by the same spot and they were gone. To be replaced by a couple of cars with caboose. Thats right i said caboose. The poor mans artwoork was all over it so I couldnt tell who it was lettered for. Im just suprised to see it. As i was the fact the two sleeping units were 2nd generation. Always nice to see something without an ugly face (safety cabs).

Speaking of cabooses there are a few scattered around Charlotte Im coming to find out. I may have mentioned it already, I have come across a 1920's Pullman car (so i was told) hanging out in a very odd place. Shes in very, very poor shape, having also been modified. While Im happy to see atleast shes not been scrapped, im saddened at her demise anyways.

A couple weeks ago i mentioned i had cought someone rounding the gates at a grade crossing. I passed by that crossing again a couple days ago and got a real good video (as good as 'i' can do) of a very odd sight. A lone NS unit slowly ambling along. Thankfully, no one crossing against the gates this time! She was a second gen unit too. I will say this for Charlotte, theres some nice units skulking about.

A couple of intermodals and a sighting of a long string of coil cars round out the festivities.

Well folks thats about it for my podeum time. Hope everyone is ok and doing well. Or atleast on the road to amends. See yall soon again.

Something is wrong with this MRR web page it is jerking and carrying on. There is this stupid video advertisement that is running like a race horse but I cant type ! Then I keep getting this stop, debug scripts, thing. Very frustrating.

I use AdBlock for just that reason.  Sometimes, advertisers put very system-intensive videos in their ads which are so intrusive that they render the page unusable.  AdBlock takes care of that.

Mr. B - I have heard some of those seats can make a man infertile is that true ?

I'm not sure about infertility, but the older seats can result in some ED and urinary problems as well.  They constrict the flow of blood and also put pressure on the nerves.  The new seats are designed to not have that problem.  There are records of the same issues regarding horseback riders way back in ancient Greece.

Mr B., which saddle are you getting? I have gone through a number of saddles and finally settled on one from Performance.

I got one from Lithia.  It was with the "racing" saddles rather than the "comfort" saddles, but it's got significant padding.  It's on the bike now and I'll be taking it out in just a little while.  Hopefully, I won't have to spend too much time getting it adjusted right.

The old one is the original that came with the bike 32 years ago.  The bike is a Guerciotti, now considered a "classic" or "retro" bike.  It gets more compliments than its rider, that's for sure.  Back then saddles were all convex and they did put a lot of pressure where you don't want it.  As a younger man, I didn't notice, but lately I've found it kind of uncomfortable.  Time for a change.

Good afternoon all.

Flo, RBF please. Too hot for much else.

Weather - Hot, humid. Again/still...

W**k - Big weekend sale this weekend, 50% off sale started this morning, runs through close on Sunday. Expecting to be quite busy. We lost half the parking due to a newly opened car lot, really odd place for it, but worse as he takes up half the lot. That should make our weekend sale quite interesting....

YGW - Coffee and/or Cappuccino is my way of saying, without saying, that I am having pretty major asthma issues... I dislike coffee, and dislike cappuccino, but the caffeine content helps with the breathing. So, no, didn't fly through the projects. Only two got done, and neither were train related...

Hope all enjoy, and have a good day.

MisterBeasley
. . .I'm heading out to the bicycle shop in a few minutes to get a new saddle. . .

Mr B., which saddle are you getting? I have gone through a number of saddles and finally settled on one from Performance.

I have been traveling lately, both for w*%k and for fun. Mrs. ROR and I spent a week in the Pacific Northwest, including a couple days in Victoria, BC. One of the days was spent on a whale watch around the San Juan Islands, where we saw about a dozen Orcas and a Humpback. Seeing an Orca in the wild was on Mrs. ROR's bucket list.

The worst of the summer has arrived in the Valley of the Sun. In July and August we get moist air from the Gulf of California. When I went for my ride this morning at 5:00am, it was 85F and 70% humidity. Thank goodness the sun was not quite up yet.

On the train front, I am installing fascia. I was pretty amazed that I was able to bore out the holes in the right places for my turnout switches. I still have the tricky one to design and cut--the one that will "face" the mountain at the end of the layout. It also includes a 30 degree bend that I hope to accomplish by scoring the back of the fascia board, then bending. Fingers crossed.

UG! What a day yesterday. This movie thing is going to be a parent killer.

Wednesday night both kids get their call times for 0700Hrs Thursday. So we are up at 0430Hrs for the one and a half hour drive in to Vancouver to the set location.

We check in and are sent to wardrobe. The studio had the kids measurements but they were told they could wear their own clothes and bring two extra outfits. Then if the costume director didn't like what they were wearing or had with them they would supply them. This wardrobe department was the size of large clothing store. They were told to dress like they were going to an upper-middle-class fall wedding in New York.

The first wardrobe person said you two look really sharp. After a while the grand poobah wardrobe person came in and said, boy, you guys know how to dress you will be fine like that. I looked at my son and said, "we both know your sister knows how to dress, what's your excuse". My son goes "just got lucky I guess".Laugh It was then off to make up for the buff and polish.

My daughter was taken to the set first and was shown where she would be and had a bit of a rehearsal. She spent the entire day front and centre and was in every shot/scene but one. She figures they did 25 to 30. In some of the scenes, they placed her close enough to the five main stars she is actually touching them. In between every shot and sometimes "many times" in between every shot makeup and hair would buff and polish her. She felt like a queen.

She was told not to talk to any of the stars unless spoken to. It wasn't long before she was yapping with all five of them all throughout the whole day as they were all a small captive group on the set. She said that one of them said they had started as an extra, and couldn't believe my daughter was given such a high profile spot the first time she had ever been on a movie set. She said you're on your way kid, they like you.

The Director had her do a couple of things just on her own. No lines just going and getting something and coming back.

Both kids were in a group of about 17 extras for close up work. My son was brought in and out as needed throughout the day while the daughter never left except for breaks. Later in the day 600 extras were brought in so they could have the big crowd behind them. This was the group my kids were expecting to be with when they first signed up.

At one point a paparazzi burst on to the set with this huge camera. Security jumped him quick and they rolled into my daughters legs. His three cameras, all with huge lenses "accidentally" got smashed to bits.Laugh The whole place outside was crawling with paparazzi.

So we got home at 2000Hrs last night We shovelled some food into them and they had to wait until 2030Hrs to get their call times for tomorrow and respond. At 0830 and 30 seconds they were both sound asleep. Daughter got a 0700Hrs call time and the sons was 1130Hrs. 0430Hrs rolled around this morning and I said to the wife I'll get the kids up, she said your daughter is already up. Well that was sure different from yesterday.Laugh

They didn't Laugh want breakfast, the little snobs were going to have Eggs Benedict on the set!

Today they finish what they started yesterday and then get into cold New York winter kind of clothes for the next part.( it's very warm here today) I told my son to wear his Vancouver Canucks toque. All New York Hockey Fans want to be seen in a Canucks toque. No logo's allowed Dad.

Neither kid really had much interest in doing this, they were bored and signed up as they thought it would be something different to do.

At the end of the day, they said  to my daughter, she must be there tomorrow and even if she is dead bring her in and they will prop her up "Weekend at Bernies" style. If she doesn't show they have to do the whole days shoot over.

I'm sure glad Mom took them today I'm bagged even though I spent yesterday lying on a lawn looking at the Pacific Ocean. Well somebody has to do it. The food tent made me, yes I say made me, eat an awful lot.Whistling

Best wishes to all, I am going back to bed.

Garry,

If I recall correctly, it was just north of Detroit in Pontiac. Amazingly, the turntable is still there!

Take Care, Ed

Ed ... Then I should have recognized it as many times as I was in Pontiac. I recall that turntable being used to turn auto rack cars long after steam locomtives were retired.

Steven .... I see the ad in MR for Great Model Railroads 2017. I think you said you were working on it a few weeks ago. I suspect it is another good publication.

Ulrich ... Another nice video from you. I definately like the stone arch bridge.

Happy Model Railroding, everybody .

Made a new video of the layout, just to get my mind off that nice looking, but hardly running loco:

While pondering my fate with that loco engine, I accidentally found the solution to my layout lighting problem. My initial idea saw two LED spots mounted somehow behind the backdrop, but it was that somehow which kept me from going for it, as I could not figure out how to mount them. My layout rests on that cabinet on casters, but I only move it around when I am w*rking on the layout or do track maintenance behind the backdrop. Most of them time it rests on the same spot, which allows me to get two cheap ceiling mounted spotlights and equip them with color-variable LED spots. With that, I can simulate different times of the day - from dawn to dusk. The investment is a minor one and is covered by a gift voucher I got from a friend. That´s going to be one of the next things on my layout to-do list - onece I get over that sulking phase!

Ken - ouch! Whatever it is, I hope it´ll go away soon!

Good morning.

By coincidence, I'm heading out to the bicycle shop in a few minutes to get a new saddle.  Traditional saddles result in a lot of pressure on the "perineum," that portion of your anatomy between one part I can't mention here and another part I can't mention here, but suffice it to say that it ends up in the center of the bike seat.  If you think you need the Little Blue Pill, perhaps you really just need a new bike seat.  It might actually be a "cycle-logical" problem.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
