Ricky glad your dad is doing ok, around here they discharge you anytime. I left the hospital at 6 pm a couple days after my heart surgery.

The "PIKE" thread, which was of very little interest, had a comment on how model railroaders used to smoke pipes at shows.  Some, new to me, family photos appeared recently and my grandfather always smoked a pipe.  My dad was a 3 pack a day smoker but he smoked a pipe some, when I was small.  I have only ever seen one person my age smoke a pipe.  When did pipes go away?

Nothing on the train front.  Weather is humid but not too hot.

I know a guy (motorcycle mechanic) who put the rear end of a golf cart on the front end of a BMW airhead motorcycle.  The thing was actually street legal.

Sir Madog
A simple electric car , however is a lot simpler than a gas car and has virtually maintenance free drive train.

The trouble with an electric around here is range.  If you want to do anything other than local driving, you need a second car for that.  A ski trip, for example, would be too far to go on one charge, and the cars are too small for two people and their equipment.

Yeah, I've got a new "component" for my hockey equipment that should keep me in good shape.  Ice time in two hours.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Hello Railfans! Top of the evening to ya!

Well, my ten hour day is done. Thats 3 hours work, 7 hours sitting in traffic. Gotta love red lights! So much so I think the world needs atleast a couple thousand more redlights per person. Seriously. Even if theres no street to go with them. What the heck - redlights for everyone, everywhere!! They go nicely with those paved over battlefields.

Anyways I came in just to rub it in a little about the niiiice, coooooolll, ice colllllddddd temperature of my room now. Compared to the 90 plus it has been up til now (even at night!). Truth be known I dont mind the heat, its that blasted humidity that just drains the life right outta ya. Sleeping in it? Im with yall on that one.... for the birds it is!

Now, I have neither heat nor humids. Kinda makes up a pinch for the company car not having A/C. Which is my office. Some have a corner office, i have one that corners. I wont rub it in too hard (im just happy to come home to a/c after a hot day) on yall cuz if i had a layout, Id be saying yall need to come on over and help me run this thang, A/C provided. And if PM aint your road, bring your own! (as long as its HO)

YGW - I remember the open window nights too my friend. Staring at the alarm clock, keeping time with every tick, solemly waiting for a breeze that never came..... or that lonesome horn blowing for a crossing.

Ahhh those were the days! Welded rail hadnt been installed and you could count the clikety clack like cows over the moon. The distant crossing call fading into the grumble of 2nd gen EMD's gracefully playing their trade. Until all rolls into the distance unto oblivion, and peaceful sleep. Memories.... the gold standard of old age!

Night time trains were about the only advantage to an open window on a summer night. Well, that was then. Now you open the window and all you get is sirens, gun fire, highway noise from parking lot 95, commercials, forrest fires, bombing practice, insurrections, and the occasional neighbor who cant seem to 'gently' place the garbage in the outside container. They must deposit it like a gram slam meteor hitting a thimball at full impulse power half court jamb. Dont forget a barking dog or 40.

Ken - Id say a good time is betwixt 8pm and midnite my time. Which is 6-10pm your time. And if you can, make it mon - thurs.. Im unavailable fri-sun doing the elderly parent thing.

See yall soon,

Douglas

Howmus - Sounds like your electric bills are gonna be lower ? Do they have to buy the electric back from you if you produce more than you use ?

For about 5 months in the summer the panels produce more electric than I use so there is a credit for the kWh surplus.  Once a year NYSEG (my energy delivery company) settles up the account.  It used to be the April Bill (came in early May) and I had a few extra kWh produced that I didn't use.  NYSEG would pay me (as a credit on the bill) what they pay wholesale for electrciity which is not quite 4¢ a kWh.  Not a good deal as my cost for a kWh with all taxes, fees and other added stuff is a little over 15¢ per kWh.  I moved the settle up month back to March when I never have any excess kWhs on the account.  That way I can get to use all the accumulated excess against power I use from the grid.  During the months I make more than I use, I still have to pay the "Line Charge" which is the fee they charge to have their wires connected to my house ($15).  So June, my electric cost I have to pay will be all of $15.  The excess I accumulate will be exchanged kWh for kWh later when I use more than I make.  That make sense?

MisterBeasley
Well, you might not need an engine oil change, but my guess is that the braking system and safety stuff like an airbag shutoff are going to be common to all cars, including electrics. A few years back, a friend who had bought a Prius hybrid said they cost about $5000 over the cost of the same car without the "hybrid" features. Gas is a lot cheaper now, so it's not clear to me that you would ever actually make up for that up-front cost over the lifetime of the car.

Mr. B,  I think you have been listening to the naysayers.....  Just will try to clarify a couple things.

1.  Braking.  I have 40,000 miles on my PiP (Plug in Prius).  At 40,000 miles on each of the Dodge Dakotas I owned(3) I had to replace the front disc pads and have the roters turned (of course I was pulling a 2 ton trailer around for a lot of those miles).  The Yaris had about 45,000 miles on it when I traded it in and the brakes were still within specs, but just barely.  I don't expect to ever do anything reguarding the brakes on the PiP and I expect to put another 40,000 or so miles on it before I get rid of it.  The next owner may never need to do anything either....  Why?  Ever heard of Dynamic Braking on locomotives?  The Prius and basically all hybrid vehicles use the same thing.  You only use the actual friction brakes under two circumstances.  a) when you are under about 5mph and b) when you are standing on the brakes real hard in an emergency (well there is a thrid, when you are going down a very long hill and the traction battery is fully charged).  Only difference between Dynamic Braking and regenerative braking in a Hybrid, is that the diesel Electric Loco wastes the energy by turning it into heat in a bank of resisters, the hybrid (or electric) instead you use it to recharge the battery.  If you drive a hybrid correctly you should get well over 150,000 miles without replacing anything on the brakes.  One gent in a PiP forum says that he just took his PiP in for its 140,000 mile oil change and the tech at the place asked him if he just replaced the brakes.......

2.  If you are talking about the Prius costing more than a prius without being a hybrid, I think you better do some reading on the car.  The Prius IS a hybrid....  Period.  There never has been a Prius that wasn't a hybrid and probably won't be either.......  Now my PiP is the upper end of the Prius family and yes back in 2012 when I bought it ran about $5,000 more than a standard (but still hybrid) Prius.

3.  Have you priced the cost of a new Pick-em-up truck or anything in the Caddy line lately????  Yes, there are people who have to look primarily at price for a car....  They also tend to buy used most of the time....  But really how many people do you know who bought a hybrid car to save money????   I didn't!  Like most people I ended up buying the car I wanted from the list of cars that I wanted.....  My second choice would have been the Chevy Volt....  Biggest reason i didn't get that is I really don't like the local dealer who sold me a complete piece of junk in a used Chevy Truck and then refused to do the repairs he said he would when I bought it...  No way I will by anything there.  So on the recommendation of several friends and relatives who have done business with the Dealer where I bought my Yarris back when, so I bought the PiP there....  They have been great to me with both cars!!!

So really, buy the vehicle you want, and not because you think it will save you money....  A guy out at the museum tried that you will never pay the difference with the Prius on me.  I finally asked him what he was driving.  He told me and I reminded him that his car cost $20,000 more than mine.  I also told him I didn't expect to "Save $" but bought the car I wanted for the reasons I wanted it...  (Powering it with sunshine from my roof is one of them though....).

I found out this morning that the Mother of one of my closest friends here in Geneva passed away early today.  I knew she was in the hospital for an infection in one of her legs....  She was 92 I believe.  She was also quite a lady!  Still living at home, her son was her primary caretaker between running jhis own business and working at our church.  She fell on her way into church about 10 years ago and broke her hip....  Since that time she has managed to get around with a walker, but still made it to church every Sunday!!!  She was also completely deaf and hated hearing aids, so she just didn't wear them.  She will be missed.....

Have a safe night!

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please. Sigh

Geared Steam Hope you don't mind me steeling and posting your photo. I think I have stole / posted 4 or so. Great looking layout!

YGW Looking forward to the B&O coal cars. I wish I could get a EM-1 around my layout.

Brakes On my cars I get about 80,000 miles on the front? Why you ask with them being 4 ton monster's? It is because of the way I drive. When I see a stop light I know I won't make I take my foot off the gas and coast. I see people rush around me only to drive up to the stop light and hit there brakes just to sit. While I coast and do not give the car gas till the ones sitting still start to move.

Foot Front Sigh Seems I have what called hammer toe on the left foot. Toe next to the big toe had a wound on it 6 weeks ago. My normal foot Dr Jefferson Barrack's wanted to follow up on it 4 weeks later and I did. That Foot Dr said the wound was now a callous and just keep a eye on it which I have.

It is now red and the tip is turning black. I can pick the black callous off but I am worried. Last time that happened it was on the right foot and I all most lost part of the foot! I was in the hosptial for 6 days and on IV's for 3 months.

Biggest worry, will the Quicks at the VA walk in clinic know what they are looking at! Bang Head Last time I went in with a foot problem I had a bleeding ulicher (small amount of blood) and I was told "Why are you here? This is for sick people and you are not sick and the toe is not infected!" Two day's later I went to a private clinic (sent by the VA) for my new shoes and as soon as Andy saw the toe he said it was infected! Whistling He got the VA into gear and I got saw by Specialist at the VA and it was fixed in short order. It will be 4 years ago Wednesday I was addmitted to the VA with the first foot ulicer. Sure hope history is not repeating it self.

So if I am not here Wednesday, I will be in the Hosptial again. Sigh

Hey all. Man you all are enjoying some good stuff ! Roor beer floats ( YUMMY ) Raspberry ice tea ( OH JOY ! ) Siggghhh Cant have that stuff. So I will sit in the booth enjoy you all enjoying the good stuff Big Smile Making progress on weight loss but I have a LONG way to go. Sigh

FRRYkid - Raspbery ice tea ??!!! Oh man I LOVE Raspberry ice tea !

One way that I can get away with all this sweet stuff is that, for the most part in town, I walk everywhere. (Two miles from home to work that I can do in about half an hour. The most part precludes extreme heat {above 90 F}, extreme cold {below about 10 above}, and of course if it's raining. I then call our local taxi service especially from home. I sometimes am lucky enough that a coworker gives me a ride from work. Snow: I don't mind walking in it as I usually have plenty of insulation and the snow is fairly dry.) Of course that comes with the fact that I don't have a driver's license. Nothing legally is preventing me from getting one. I just have never been comfortable behind the wheel. (I don't feel like I have control of the "beast" at anything above about 20 MPH.)

Mentioning train budget, where I work has the option of paycards. I have a regular checking account so for all the time I worked there I have had the whole check deposited. However in January, I went to having a small amount deposited to a card so that I could actually save money to get bigger stuff. (Started out in order to get a couple of ExactRail flatcars {$45 USD each which for me is quite an expense car} and evolved into being able to afford a new GP35 engine, parts for the GP30 and other various items without having to dip into the regular checkbook.)

Good Morning!

What a night again! While the day was actually quite nice, the night wasn´t. Shortly after midnight. a terrific thunderstorm rolled in again, followed by another antediluvian flood. It still is pouring down as I type this.

Yuck!

Mr. B. - I am aware of the range limitations, but that would not hurt us at all. A range of, say 80 to 100 miles would be more than sufficient. We use the car only to do our shopping and to get around our small town. The longest distance I drive is to my friend´s place and that´s a distance of less than 25 miles, but with a stretch of Autobahn to it, so a top speed of 80 to 85 mph is a must. I wouldn´t need any of those new fangled gadgets in it, not even A/C.

I have the train station within walking distance. Whenever I have to go to Hamburg, taking the is the much cheaper option. The return ticket for Petra and me is less than the parking fee in Hamburg. Euro 24 buys me a ticket I can use to get to any station and back in my state, add Euro 2 to it and I can take Petra along Smile, Wink & Grin

We do need some kind of transport in our daily life and it needs to be a very basic and foremost cheap one.

The electric cars available today are just to expensive to be a viable option. The little VW I have is also available as in all electric version, but it costs about twice as much as the version I have. Renault of France has an electric car which is a little cheaper, but you have to rent the battery, which costs more in a month than I ever have to pay for gas.

The European car industry has no interest at all in marketing electric cars and they do their best to influence legislation. If you look into the world of electric mobility you will find that the companies which are way ahead in terms of technology are businesses with no background in car making. Makes me wonder about the future of the traditional automobile industry, especially of Volkswagen, Audi, BMW  and Benz, the management of which not yet having seen the writing on the wall.

RickyW - a good manager and employer cares for his/her employees and apparently your boss belongs to those successful "old school" type of managers getting very rare to find these days. Lucky you!

PM Railfan - we can "enjoy" this summer nighttime experience every year. No A/C and the mainline between Bremen and Hamburg within earshot. Thank goodness our trains are not as noisy as yours...

Henry:

My dad smoked cigars, and he measured the length of his car trips in terms of how many cigars it took to get there. Going to the cottage was a five cigar trip, or one every 50 miles. He didn't believe in opening the windows either. No wonder I was car sick!

I smoked a pipe on occasion in the late 70s. It had a practical purpose (or so I told myself). I was in charge of the sailing training at a cadet camp, and at 7:30 am it was often pretty cold standing on the docks in the breeze. The pipe kept my hands warm. Pouch tobacco was still available in convenience stores but the big cans of tobacco like my grandfather used to buy were hard to find by then.

I also had occasion to use pipes made of glass when I was in universityWink.... say no more...say no more.... I haven't touched that stuff in 40 years.LaughDead

Dave,

That reminds me of a not so wonderful trip down the beautiful Centovalli narrow gauge line between Locarno (Switzerland) and Domodossola (Italy) 50 years ago. It was one of those famous day trips we made from our rented summer home in Switzerland. It was a hot day and I mean really hot, with temperatures above 90F and no A/C in the train. Still everyone kept the windows closed, which was bad already. Things got worse when the genleman sitting opposite of me lit up his cigar. I still wonder whether he ever managed to get the smell from contents of my stomach out of his pants...

Years later I rode down this line just to find out what a beautiful ride it can be.

Jeremy - Welcome to Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner!

This thread is a virtual old fashioned diner, just like in the 1940´s or 1950´s. Folks meet here to talk about the day they had, what their plans are and such - just like friends meeting in a realy diner did when they met for lunch or after work in those days. It´s the only place where you can talk Off Topic, but always within the policy our host Kalmbach has set for this forum. So no political or religious talk, please.

We share (to a degree) our lives, our joy as well as our grief in here - just like friends do. We actually feel like friends, although most of us will never have the chance to meet.  We may appear to be a closed shop, but we are not - we always welcome new members.

Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner was actually named "Elliot´s Trackside Diner" for its founder many, many years ago. It was renamed into "Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner" when our dear friend Jeffrey Wimberley aka Running Bear passed away on December 15th, 2014.

The place is run by "Cousin Vinnie", the virtual proprietor, who vigorously enforces the forum rules, assisted by Steven "The Law" Otte from Kalmbach. Cousin Vinnie usually is snoozing in one of the backbooths and we better not wake him up. Janie, Flo, the twins Chloe and Zoe, and Brunhilda, the Swedish girl are the waitresses, happily serving your order of food and beverages of your choice. They deserve to be treated nice.

So come on in, sit a spell and tell us a little bit about you, your "trains" - Janie, bring this chap whatever poison he favors and put it on my tab.

Me again!

The postman rang twice and brought an early birthday present for me. Before Petra seized it and put it away until my birthday in August, I was able to take a sneak preview and a couple of photos of it:

It´s an old Marklin class 141 (before 1968 E 41) boxcab electric for light passenger trains. The model was first released in the early 1950´s and only the lettering has changed.

The model itself is about 20 years old and in mint condition - for a price unbelievably low, because it´s a foobie! This type of loco wore the blue livery until the early 1960s, when it was changed into green. The change in the numbering scheme from class E 41 into class 141, took place in 1968, long after the locos lost their blue livery.

Heck, I don´t care - it´s a great model for an incredibly low price ( $ 12 plus shipping) and a great birhday gift. If only tomorrow would be August ...

Howdy Jeremy!

Ulrich explained the Diner pretty well. Basically its a place where you can get a little off the topic of model railroading and share some of the other things that are going on in your life. No religion, no politics, just friendly chat. Tell us how your day went or tell us what you have been doing model railroading wise.

You will have to put up with a lot of us old guys complaining about our various aches and pains. By the way, did I tell you how sore my back has been........Smile, Wink & GrinLaughLaughLaugh

Have fun!

Have fun with it!

I certainly will!

I think the model has a surprising amount of detail for a loco, which was marketed for the first time over 60 years ago. OH, all the wires on the roof are cast on and not applied separately, but again, what the heck! The 1965 price was 35 Deutschmarks, which translates into € 18. The current version, which has a plastic body, DCC and sound, a lot more detail and an up to date drive, but it runs at € 250!

I don´t think this will be the last nostalgia model I´ll be acquiring. I hope to find more for such a low price!

G'day all...the names Chris and as you guessed I aint from round here...geez the spicy Pumkin soup looks like a goer...I will get a serving thanks.

Hell of a day today ... had the earthworks crew almost undermine and destroy one of the local property owners brick piers. We spent an hour on the shovel and sledge hammer setting star pickets and packed the corner with the soil they had dug out...No credit to the geniouses that created the problem...seemed as though 3 site managers had no idea how to remedy the situation...I guess thats what you get when you use high fives and TGIF drinks to climb the ladder...LOL

I have said hello here before but its been a while since I have come past this way.

I tell you what...this soup is just what the doctor ordered.

I have been chatting to the lads at Rapido consumer service...I have been in the market for a GMD1 1400 diesel loco...They say there is a batch coming out at the end of the year and I am keen as to pick one up...being based in Australia and modelling American has its problems.

Well I better get a move on if I am going to make it to bed before the morning...cheers for the awesome soup Flo...Catch you all round and look after yourselves...the fog is rolling in thick.

Ooroo...

Cheers...

Good morning, 71 and partially sunny. Some time today, I have to sit down and shop for a birthday present for my oldest sun. I have about three weeks until the birthday, but the way things are going, it is going to sneak up on me otherwise.

The Pottsylvanian County recorder of deeds finally got around to recording the transaction giving my wife the power to sell the MIL's house. The transaction was back in April. These people have no sense of urgency... Tomorrow, the buyer's Home inspector is due...this should be fun, our agent is supposed to be there for the inspection. I'm curious to see how creative the inspector is...and if the buyer and his agent really understand what the phrase "AS IS" means.

Meanwhile, everything else is taking a back seat to my MIL's drama. Sigh

My build of Walthers Water St Freight House is progressing slowly. I decided that interior lighting might be a nice effect, as it is intended as a foreground model. Now i need appropriate interior lighting. Out of curiosity, has anyone tried the Woodland Scenics system? If so, what do you think of it?

We had a little excitement at our house last night. My daughter is staying with us while she goes back to school, and has a pair of dogs. Last night, her Beagle was outside and started making a horrible pained noise. Long story short, we are pretty sure she was stung by a scorpion. A check internet search told us that the sting of an Arizona bark scorpion, while not fatal in humans, can kill a dog. We watched for an hour or so and she didn't exhibit any serious symptoms (seizures, vomitting, etc.) so we think she is going to be okay.

On the bike riding front, as of this morning I hit 500 miles for the month. This is the first 500-mile month in over three years. The miles will fall off precipitously next month as I will be traveling three out of four weeks.

I hardly believe it.  Yesterday, I went out for a haircut and to pick up one of my Old Man Pills at the pharmacy, and got home about 1 PM.  They were working on the road, smoothing down the cross-cut where they put storm drains on both sides of the street.  When I went out to hockey last night, the street was .... paved.  Yes, fresh, black asphalt, edge to edge, the entire length of the primitive, third-world roadway I've been living with for decades.

I should be delighted, but I'm not so sure anymore.  How good a job could they do in six hours?  Certainly, they just brought in trucks, hot-topped the road and rolled it.  They didn't remove the old asphalt, smooth the surface and then lay a base coat and top coat.  I suppose it will last until I'm out of here, mostly.

Today when I drove over it I noticed the pavement had already started to sink over that cross-cut ditch.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Wojosa31 - wrote "the buyer's Home inspector is due...this should be fun, our agent is supposed to be there for the inspection. I'm curious to see how creative the inspector is." ---In my industry we deal with a LOT of Home inspectors - Some are idiots, some who have built are decent, some are failed building inspector wanna bes....Do not have a very high regard for 99% of them. If you want I can review the list and possible help you out with some comments.

Mr B - Do you know if they used a milling machine ? If they "milled" the surface they could relay that in that short of time.

Frrykid - your welcome !

Ricky - welcome also, glad your dad is escaping and getting out of there.

Richard - Scorpians ? Those things give me the creaps

Dave wrote "measured the length of his car trips in terms of how many cigars it took to get there." Oh man I remember those days when everyone smoked ! Riding in the back seat with both parents puffing away - Ick! Couldnt wait for them to stop and be able to roll the windows down for blessed air !

Chris, Jeremy - Welcome so glad you can stop in we hope we see you often !

Ulrich - Man nice gift !

Frrykid - Back to the food topic - walking is not my top form of transportation. Bad knee, bad back from to many years of construction and an auto accident. Walking hurts a lot !

V8 - I have tip for you on the battery terminal - Clean it up and then put vaseline over it. It keeps it from corroding again

Howmus - 4cents and they sell it for 15cents ? Thats robbery ! Shouldnt you get at least half of the 15cents ?

Douglas - Oh yea those were the days sleeping in your own sweat, I remember those days all to well. When I got a window fan I thought I was living in high cotton ( before AC of course )  Thank you God for AC !!

Hey JeremyB - Hows the foot ? Is all well ?

Henry - LOL What ? A motor cycle and a golf cart ? Oh my gosh that is too funny !!! That sounds like something Jeffry Wimberly would have built !.

Sorry folks gotta git back to w**k

Evening guys

another warm dry one out today, hopefully we get some much needed rain on Friday as their calling for some.

today was the last day of school today so our street will be somewhat quieter as there are a lot of busses that come down are street on school days. Just doing up a list of some office supplies I might need, i will do it up now and wait for the back to school deals in August.

YGW the foot is healed up but still is slightly sore. Nothing too bad just aches a little bit.

as I was saying yesterday just haven't been in the model railroad mood much as of late. Pretty much non existent since the winter. My copy of model railroader came yesterday and have been looking through it. But that is pretty much as close to model railroading I have done.

talk to you fellas later
