Jeffrey's Trackside Diner - June 2016
Posted by RideOnRoad on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 8:46 AM

In memory of

Jeffrey Scott Wimberly

July 7, 1960- December 15, 2014

AKA Running Bear

Volunteer firefighter, model railroader, and dear friend to many.

Jeffrey's Trackside Diner was formerly Elliot's Trackside Diner. It was renamed with new management to honor our friend.

Jeffrey's Trackside Diner is a meeting place for all who wish to join. We may talk on & off topic within the MR forum policy. Talk about ongoing or future model railroading projects, or simply share your day.

Beware of extreme off topics when blowing off steam. Surprisingly political, religion, and rude language. One man can crash it when it violates the rules of the house... Cousin Vinnie or his younger counterpart Steven.

This establishment is opened 24/7 for anything you desire to eat. The staff includes Janie, the twins Chloe & Zoe, Flo, Daisy, and Brunhilda.

Enjoy your stay.

So, where are we this month?

I wonder who is going to step up and move the Diner into June this time.

Maybe, Ulrich or Br. Elias, or will Galaxy surprisingly show up. How about YGW.

or Ride on Road, he is usually up early.  I know one thing for sure, it won't be me.

I guess I have been elevated to regular status and have been given keys to the diner. It is open for business and friendly conversation. This month's location will be near the Union Pacific tracks in Clearfield, Utah where my grandfather lived when he was a brakeman.

Morning all. Notice I didn't use the word "good" in it.  Started the day off by forgetting the work phone and having to turn around and retrace my ride to retrieve it. Three quarters of the way rear brakes locked up Sigh. One good thing a shop that happened to be on my way in was open and took my truck right in. Bad news is the VP is roaming my site without guidance Bang Head

Steve - Thanks for opening the diner. Appreciate the effort ! Richard nice always wanted to go to Utah !

Reinhard you still around ? The heat on that concrete has melted you into the pavement?

Lion - still full from the wildebeast ? I thought you might open the diner ?

Garry - hope your okay.

Ken - Lowe's started your fence yet ?

Jabear - Doing okay ?

Ulrich - hope to see you in here soon.

Gotta run the truck is almost finished.

WHAT? June Already. I must be getting older.  Calendar says something about 68 this month, I think 10 was *much* better.

OK, Wildebeest has indeed been eaten (if that is what it was).  But the LIONS are all on retreat this week with a Prior from California giving the conferences. Very Intersting, even if he is a bit on the long side.

Tomorrow is our fancy festal feast this year featuring deep fried turkey and a selection of wines from our cellar (which I ought to get up to the kitchen today).

I have been working on the railroad during the retreat, since I can get a way from these computers.

Morning diners,

I'll be getting a new phone sometime this week. My old one hasn't shown up in 5 years.

Happy New Month to all.  Just a quick stop before going into w**k (14:30-23:00 today).  We will have a guy from the LBA sniffing around at w**k today (should be very entertaining).

YGW - Sorry to hear about the truck.  Hope all is O.K. now and that it did not create too many problems.  Where did you break down?  You should have called, maybe could have helped you out.  I did not melt in the pavement yet, that will happen maybe in July or August when the humidity is as high as the temperature.

Garry - how are the cats doing?  Hope all is fine with you and your family.

Need to get ready for another 8.5 hours at the "Fun House".

All the best.

Good Evening!

Just dropping by to say hello! A nasty pain in my right shoulder woke me up early this morning and I have been battling the pain since. I was so happy the pain had gone away, but unfortunately not for long. Went to see the doc about it. He gave me a couple of shots, but the pain has not yet gone away. Seems as if I am in for a night without sleep.

Typing hurts, so I will be quiet for a couple of days.

No bike ride today--I am taking it off as a recovery day. I have been pushing myself lately with the resulting improvement in my performance. On Monday, my average speed was the highest it has been in almost four years. Yesterday I felt the effect of the effort, so today I am resting the legs. I will be back out tomorrow.

I have learned the importance of a good solder joint, or rather what happens when you have poor connections on your feeders. I have been having intermediate failures that have been driving me crazy, about ready to swear off of this infernal hobby. Now it appears to have been caused by the increased resistance of poor solder joints. In my defense, this is the first time I have done any real solder work in my life. Now that I have fixed the problem, I will glue the track back down that I tore up to hunt down the problem.

That´s my "Miss June"

This type of loco used to pull the famous "Rhinegold" Express train from Basel to Hoek van Holland. Her drivers are 7ft. tall, allowing for a top speed of 150 kph, not much for today´s standard, but quite a lot in 1918!

Heading for bed now, hoping I can find some sleep.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, a large glass of iced tea would be fine right now.

I have been running errands most of the day....  Went down to Mother Earth Natural foods and bought my month's supply of coffee (Seneca Lake Blend and Marrakesh Express dark roast), then drove over to Seneca Falls to a huge Menonite group of stores that is basically a large dept store complete with a major restaurant.  I went into the grocery part and walked up to one of their young cashiers, who was having a bad day, I think, and asked her where I might find vegetable seeds (was looking for Parsnips).  She scowled at me me and said, over there, around the corner.  I repeated what she said with a question mark on the end hoping she might be a bit more precise.  She wasn't.  I didn't know whether she meant in that store or in one of the other ones.  Since she said around the corner, I got in the PiP and drove around the side of the building to find the only thing over there was the restaurant....  Stopped at my son's house which was on the way home.  He has today off from w*rk and was doing an oil change in his new Lawn Tractor (replacing the "break in" oil).  I told him about the seeds, and He said he has to go over there tomorrow to buy the bottled water they use for cooking and drinking (they have a well of questionable quality...).  He will check and get the seeds for me if they have them.

Last night I got a bit more done on the area that I am building on the layout.  Put the second coat of plaster on some of the scenery area and painted what was already finished.

Here is one of the "earth" colored paint I use as a base for scenery.  Actually did that before the second coat of plaster in the front.

Ulrich, I have to say I like your "Miss june" better than the diseasally thingy....  I get all hot and steamy around 4-6-2's.... WhistlingLaugh

Nice day here in the Finger Lakes!  currently 79°F under bright sunny skies...  I will be out among them tonight at an ice cream social at Boy Scout District Roundtable.  It is our last Roundtable for the year (september to June).

Have a great day out there!

It would need to be someone who communicated with him very recently, seeing as he moved a couple of months ago. Do you have the new address from when he sent the funds for your SIL?

 Afternoon Dinners

Flo, Barry Buger and a Beer please.

Day Off Spent around 4 hours running around today. I took the cordless phone home last night by mistake. So I had to get to work before Jerry got there, that way he would not feel Threaton by me! Whistling

Stopped at Harbour Freight and bought a 11 foot electric pole saw and some saws all blades. I have a lot of dead branch over the piatio I need to get rid of. Soon as the wind blows, sticks all over the places. By the time I got done with other running it was 4:00 PM and I was beat.

Had Liberty Fence come out to give me a bid. Was not inpressed, total stumped him when I said I wanted the post sunk 3 foot, not 2 foot in the ground. Said he would E-Mail me the bid Thursday.

Wife is mad at me, and I don't blamer her much. Now she did start the problem by calling aminal control and that is what started Yard Wars with zoning. (I had been cleaning up the mess before she called aminal control)  So all I do on my days off is running and working on the yard. She's mad I won't take a day off and take her to lunch or dinner.  While I hate eating out, she loves it. So I guess I will make the time to take her out to eat. I suggested she meet me after work on Sunday for dinner, but NO. They will be busy and she does not want to waite to be seated!

Credit Front I have Discover card coming with a $3000.00 limte and no intrest for 12 months with 13.24% intrest. Guess I will be shutting down my Capital One card, it like 24% intrest. Wife is mad about that was well! She wrecked her credit by not working and catalog shopping that offered her credit that she could not pay. Now this was 24 years ago, when she could work. When I bought the house the only way I could get the loan was if she was not on it.

 Later, Ken

I lived way longer without a phone. It comes up time and time again in the back of my mind. I decided to get a phone when I started college 10 years ago. Just in case something happened. It's my EP/ET. (Emergency phone/telephone).

Good Evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have an Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.

Utah is UP country.  I'm liking the choice for this month.

I worked as a section hand for the UP for a month right out of high school.  Second hardest work I've ever done, right behind bailing hay.  But then, I was 14 when I first bailed hay.

The job we were doing was raising track.  A couple of guys would be out in front about 25-50 yards and clear away the ballast so the tamping machines could see which ties were new and or needed extra attention.  The inside of the rails were marked with a stripe or something to indicate which ones.  Then the rest of the crew would follow behind the machine with tamping rods and spike mauls to give an extra manual tamp and drive in any spikes sticking up.  They do that periodically because the track will eventually settle.  That's partly why some siding tracks are varying heights, have dips, and have lateral shift.  So, they raise track to keep the mainline level And in guage.    We would start work at 5:30 am and have lunch around 9:30 am.  The day would end about 2:30 pm.  I still have my employee handbook.

this coming weekend is the Dupage train show.  MOH is visiting her sister so I get to look for some inexpensive deals.

Hello to everyone, YGW, Ulrich, Ken, Ray, Lion, Ride on, Mr. B, Angelo, v8 Dennis, and I'm sure I've missed someone.

I hope everyone is OK and safe.

Less is more,...more or less!

Good evening all,

Many wishes all are doing well. I've not been to Utah yet (closest I've been is Denver Colorado, but only for a flight layover). Love to visit Bryce Canyon and Zion Natl. Park.

Ulrich, thank you for the 4-6-2 pic, she's beautiful!

YGW, ugh break-downs are awful, sorry you got to put up with that.

Howmus, month's supply of coffee is always a plus! Looking forward to seeing how your scenery will be developed.

Rideonroad, I hear ya on recovery days. I did a bike ride yesterday and I'm still feeling it.

Garry, Wildebeest sounds delicious, I'd like to try a bit.

Had a day off yesterday, and helped out around the house, and then pulled my "nice bike", a 1990 Bridgestone RB-1 out of my room, where it's been sitting since November. I also got my "kit", jersey, bib shorts, cycling gloves, and shoes. The shoes have cleats that lock into the pedals. I've been a big fan of those for years now. I rode to a swimming hole using the backroads here in Lancaster. I rode from the city south to the countryside. 23.75 mile round-trip according to the cycle-computer. Have to do another one soon. Afterward, beer and pizza with a good friend of mine.

I'd been asked last month as to what interested me about Sergent couplers over Kadee. First off, I do like Kadee couplers, they've given me excellent service, however I've always wanted to try Sergent couplers ever since I first heard about them.

Also on the MR front, I installed a TCS Wow and speaker into my BLI/Sunset kitbash of PRR 1361. Tomorrow night, I'll take it to the club and run it around the layout. I like the TCS Wow so far, and think I may convert my other steamers to TCS Wow decoders in the future. The audio assist definitely makes programming much easier.

Good Afternoon!

Well, the night was actually much better thanI had expected - I did get 4 hours of sleep in the first go and another two a couple of hours later. The pain meds seem to kick in, bringing the pain to a bearable level. But now I feel really sick in my stomach.

I did some w*rk on my layout, just to get my mind set to mor enjoyable things. I installed the console for the powerpack and the switch controls. It was a rather fiddly affair, as I had to doe soem of the wiring before fastening the console to the benchwork. It was one of those instance one could you a telescopic third arm & hand. Some how I got it done, but that will be all for the next few days until my shoulder is much better.

Here is the newest picture of my "true table-top" layout, resting on our dinig table:

YGW - I have received your email, but the enclosed pdf-file shows something black in a black environment.

"Miss June" is in my humble opinion the classiest German steam loco ever built. Despite her size, she displayed a certain sporty elegance unequaled by other locos of the steam age. Runner ups on my list of favourites are the former Royal Bavarian State Railway class S 3/6, also built by Krauss-Maffei of Munich in 1908

and the Royal Wurttemberg State Railway class C built by Maschinenfabrik Esslingen in 1909

The latter one dieappeared in 1955, so I never saw her. She had the nickname "The Beautiful Wurttembergian".

Good morning.

It is fantastic to see so much participation the the Diner in the first day of June. Each post is appreciated.

Ulrich ... Your Miss June reminds me of a Fleischmann model my Dad brought home to me from Germany when I was a boy. That is what got me started with HO. I was a Lionel kid before that.  .... I like the other old photos too. ... Your layout looks good so far.

Ken .... I would suggest paying off credit cards altogether ASAP. Each month the compound interest with rates over 20% will eat up your finances.

Reinhard .... Cats are fine. They like it better if we are home, but I've been in Alabama a lot lately. June will be a full month with out of town trips to AL and also to MI.

YGW ... That is a neat idea for people to get free material at construction job sites as you posted in the thread you started.

I actually worked a little on the layout yesterday. I love those sanity breaks.

Wildebeest is far better than the foul bird. But it has to be RARE (raw is better), they like to overcook stuff around here so that a poor LION can no longer eat them.

Monks are not supposed to eat the flesh of four foot animals, but the last time a looked, hamburgers do not have any feet.

How about the LION take her out for dinner. LIONS like eating out, and the Abbot thinks that that is not a thing that monks should be doing.

Doesn't want the LION to eat out, and then cooks all the meat fopr threde days in the potters kiln.

Two feat is not four feet, ergo they are fare game for monastic lions.

Another glorious morning for a ride. Today I got to see the odometer on my current bike hit 30,000. (Miles, that is, not kilometers.) It was a balmy 70F at 5:30 when I left. It will heat up quickly on its way to a forecasted high of 104F. At least it is a dry heat. (I once heard someone respond to the "dry heat" comment by saying, "Yeah, but so is my oven, and I wouldn't want to live in there, either.)

I didn't get around to gluing down the track yesterday. Other good things occupied my time and attention. Maybe today.

Ken - no offense meant, but I wanted to say this already a long time ago. I don´t think your wife is to blame for you to have to battle the Yard War. With the state your yard used to be in you had to count on having to do something about it at any time.  So don´t be mad at her, give her a big hug and take her out for dinner!

Looks like I'll have a nice day for a bike ride.  I, too, have been pushing myself and feeling it.  Monday I did both my upper-body workout at the gym and a quick-paced ride on the road bike.  Tuesday was hockey.  I usually take Wednesdays off after hockey, but I am seeing and feeling the results from the gym so I went there again.  Right now, I'm tired, but some aerobic exercise is needed for my diabetes regimen, and riding a bike on a nice day sure beats walking on a treadmill.

I hate doing yardwork and almost always pay someone when it needs to be done.  The wife, on the other hand, expects me to do yardwork with her anytime she feels like bossing someone around.  She thinks nothing of working in the yard for 8 hours at a time, and to be honest, I don't think much of it either.

Dinner out, on the other hand, is something I really enjoy.  It's the wife with her fussy preferences in food that gets in the way.

And speaking of cats....today my daughter and I took an old wooden toy box and converted into a puss-a-potty.  I cut a door opening in one end and made up a couple of dividers for the inside.  The cat's litter box will be inside in the center compartment between the two "bulkheads."  There is a small entryway by the door which will be carpeted to catch stray cat litter.  The top can still be opened for "maintenance" but the whole thing should be a lot more attractive than just a cat box.  She's moving into a smaller apartment with her boyfriend, and we've been doing woodworking projects over the last few weeks.  I've enjoyed this a lot.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
