Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Life Cereal with fresh Blueberries and a pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast coffee to wash it down with.....

Sun is shining outside the door and is expected to keep it up all day long here in the Finger Lakes.  If that happens the solar panels will top 500 kWh for the month of June already and will very likely go over 600kWh for the month.  A new record for June here.  On the other hand, we need rain, badly!  I have been watering the garden and flowers every day for over a week now.  Lawn has quit growing except for the weeds which are trying to blossom....

Bear, My boys are well past the age where they would be bunny hunters...  Besides they are declawed and haven't been outside on their own for 14.5 years.  Manét is guilty of the leg rub thing most every time somebody visits my house.

Ulrich, hope the weather change doesn't cause you much angst!  Temperature here will get into the low 80's this afternoon but will be 94°F by Sunday again.  Good time for me to get back to model railroading I thing as the basement stays nice and cool.......

Yesteday when I was chatting outside Water Street Cafe with my old Eagle Scout we were reminded that Geneva tends to a bit "Old Fashioned" at times....

By the way we were standing hear the main intersection in downtown just a few hundred feet from the Finger Lakes Railway main line.  Across Exchange Street (the main business section of the city) you can see Mother Earth Natural Foods where I get my special dark roast coffee.  There is a big carnival going on in the park across the RR tracks this weekend.  Lots of vendors, rides, and the usual fare.  I will stay away from there as I got my fill of those things back when I was a kid doing the Summer Fairs with our show herd of Guernsey Cattle.....  Probably will be a fireworks show tomorrow night.  I will be able to view it OK right from my house about a mile or so away.....Whistling  Cats will both go into hiding during that!

Time get myself moving and out in the back yard to get some sunshine on my psoriasis blotches......  Have a great one!

Today is our thirty-third wedding anniversary. I can truthfully say there have been significantly more for-betters than for-worses. We still enjoy each other's company and have many more years ahead of us. Life is good.

To temper the enjoyment of the day, the gods decided I needed a flat tire on my morning ride. Flat tires in the front are a little dicey. If you corner and the rim touches the ground, the bike is going to wash right out. Luckily I felt the slop in the steering in time to adjust. Eight and a half minutes later I was back in the saddle.

Also, on my morning ride, I decided to race a Porsche. I lost.

Congratulations on that achievement. In this day and age, to get to that number doesn't happen all the time. My parents had their 42nd earlier this year.

Richard - Congrats ! 33 Years Yes That is AWSOME. Really you tried to out run a Porche with a bike ? Laugh I dont know whether to Bow to you for given it a shot or roll on the floor in laughter . I think I am impressed you gave it a go ! What is, as Paul Harvey used to say "the rest of the story ?" bet its a good one !

Howmus - What vehicle is that ?

Garry - "Main squeeze" havent heard that in a few years - love it. Hey, you gonna eat that last bit of BD cake ?

Bear - Oh,  okay I guess Garry can have some of my cake BUT if there are any crumbs dont toss them out I want to lick that plate Big Smile

Johnboy - Dont w**k to hard that only puts one into an early grave ! Hope you can visit more often

UncleBob - I envy you. Hope you have a nice restful time. Share some photos when you get back

Dennis - What have you decided to do about your AC ? I have heard you mention "rich friends" a few times. Try this - As Christian that makes you the son of God. What is a son of the king ? A prince ! Did you realize you are a prince, an heir to the throne ? That makes you as rich as anyone !! An heir to all of the kings resources ? Have you asked the king to provide and direct your needs ?

Henry - Sorry for the loss of your BIL. Here is a Angel for you and your family. Question - why did you use straight pine for the raised bed ? Why not cedar or Locust ? They are much more rot resistant than pine and dont have all of the chemicals.

Ken - Have you considered using recycled material ? Is there a brick yard around ? Or a house that is being torn down ? I have seen some wonderful raised beds that repurposes brick, tin, wood etc from demo projects or tossed brick ...recieved the letter.

Reinhard - When a storm rolls in how in teh world do the ground crews function out on the pad ?

Karl - Oh man "free reign" in the bsmt BowBowBowBowBow oh life is getting ready to get greater !

Eight and a half minutes later I was back in the saddle.

Well done.  I haven't had a flat in a while.  I noticed a sharp decline in flats on my bike when the state finally started bottle deposits, which reduced the quantity of broken glass on the sides of the roads significantly.

A few days back, I noticed a guy with a flat.  He had everything he needed to fix it, but he couldn't find his air cartridge.  Fortunately, I always carry my pump, so I was able to help get him back on the road.

Ulrich, I believe so.  I think I saw the Ford Logo on the radiator so that should be a Ford Model T 1/4 ton pickup.  I have several in various locations on the SLOW.

Here's one!

The cab doesn´t look stock to me, but those Model T´s underwent many a "user" body variation in their days.

'Cuda...i don't think treated lumber will hurt your plants.  My wife has two raised bed vegetable gardens in the back yard which are both build of treated lumber.  The flower beds in the front yard are both edged with treated lumber and the azalia's are very hearty.

. . .I noticed a sharp decline in flats on my bike when the state finally started bottle deposits, which reduced the quantity of broken glass on the sides of the roads significantly. . .

Glass is not the culprit for the flat this time, it was a goathead thorn. I have had very few glass punctures--the most common for me is thin wire staples, followed by thorns.

MisterBeasley
. . .Fortunately, I always carry my pump, so I was able to help get him back on the road. . .

I am a CO2 cartridge bigot. I carry two tubes, two cartridges with an inflator, and a cell phone. The tubes and cartidges are for the first two flats, the cell phone is for the third flat. In all of my riding, I have only had to use the third-flat option once. One interesting thing about CO2--it leaches out of the tube over time. If I use a CO2 cartridge to inflate my tire to 120 PSI, twelve hours later it will be 80PSI, everytime. My practice now is, once I get home with CO2 in the tube, I let it all out and re-fill with the pump.

Not really in the mood for anything tonight.

Managed to figure out how to juggle trying to work on the railroad and whack the weeds for Mom. Given that the rental place doesn't open untill 1 PM on Sundays, I decided trying to do it on Sunday won't work. Besides I don't think everything needing to go back and forth will all fit in the car. So what Mom, Dad and I decided is that I will come out like usual on Sunday which gives me the opportunity to work on the railroad and get all the regular stuff done. Then Monday morning Mom and I will pick up the weed whacker and cut the weeds then. In case there are any snakes hiding in the weeds, the person I talked to at the rental place said that the blades are powerful enough that they would kill any snakes.

Afternoon Diners,

A late day to open the diner I see.

I went to a Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias show at the casino. We had tickets to see him in two weeks prior to the event. The lawn sitting is not good. I struggled around my legs they were hurting and also my butt.

Overall it was a great show.

Evenin'.......  Hm...  The place appears to be empty???  Only a couple people in all day?  They closing up the place?

Oh, Hi Chloe!  At least your here so the place must be open.  Just a slow day today.  Well I will have the BBQ Chicken with a fresh garden salad, and a baked potato for supper, please.  A cup of decaf would go along well I think.

Fex Ex brought me a package this morning evidently while I was still asleep....  I went to check to see when it should arrive and the page said "Delivered", and sure enoiugh I looked out on the deck and there it was.  New room sized HEPA filter for the train rooms down cellar.  I had one of the ones I used to have up here in the dining room and the living room down there.  Had two old ones actually.  Both were at least a decade old and they both decided to stop running last winter down cellar.  I sure had my monies worth out of them....  I decided having a HEPA filter unit down there might just help keep the dust down that likes to accumulate on the layout (in places I can't clean easily).  New one is unpacked, assembled, and in service for the last 5 or 6 hours.

Yes, Ken, for a flower garden I wouldn't worry at all about using the treated (Below ground level) lumber.  My fence has treated posts.  The above ground stuff is not treated (needs to be hit with a waterproofing paint this summer).  Vegetables?  Now that is a different story.  Treated lumber for vegetable gardens is strongly discouraged....  I remember back when the best and cheapest thing to use to outline the garden was old RR Ties....  They can't be used for landscaping here in NYS now for any place that come in contact with flowing water.  Used to common for boat docks, etc.  Not any more!!!  Our landfill will take old ties removed from landscaping but there was only one trash guy in town here that would haul them to the landfill for me when I removed mine.  Just ran into his (Developmentally Disabled) son a couple weeks ago and asked him how the trash business was doing.  He shook his head with a sad face, and said...  "Nope, no more...  Dad retired".  Glad I got rid of them when I did.......

Finally got some quality time in the layout room.  Well lets say I just said, the heck with all the other things I should be getting done, and got to w*rk on the last area of layout I am building.  Last photo I put in here a few weeks ago the area looked like this:

Gradually got some green stuff onto the painted plaster and then some dead trees magically appeared:

The ancient old newspaper is just there to keep scenic cement and other stuff off the tracks behind the scene.  As of a couple hours ago the trees managed to sprout leaves and some critters appeared.  You probably can find the stag and the doe in there, but can you find the momma bear and her two cubs?  I bet a Lion can!

Catch you all later!

I narrowed it down to the early 1940s. If I get a 1932 Erie boxcar than it will be set in 1941 or 1942. If I get a new 1942 Erie boxcar the era will be in 1943.

I just researched the VO-1000s again right now. They didn't come out until March 1942.

No more than 10-12 cars and 3 coaches. I picked a few railroads for freight cars, PRR, ERIE, SP, ULTX, NYC, I-GN, etc.

 Evening Dinners

Flo Beer please and keep them coming!

Rotten Day Had some customer today at work but they where Frame Kickers! Wht worse than having no customer's? Customer's that won't talk to you or give you the time of day! Day's like today makes me wonder if I am any good in sales? I know I am but, well I am sure some of you understand.

Had a good rain, well some would think it was good. Pool cover has around 500 more gallons in it. Pump is running as I type.

New Computer Modem. Bang Head While hooking and booting it up was easy. Ran ito problems when I tried to go to a web site. Every time no matter which site I went to I would get a message that said "This website is not configured properly and my information is not securied". It would let me go a head and connect if I wanted to. I choses to hook up the old modem again.

 Later, Ken

Evening.

Not too good a day today, my Dad is in ICU @Hospital, but should be going to a regular room tomorrow if all goes well. He has had a brain aneurysm/angioma (one Dr. says aneurysm, another says it's a veinous angioma {I know that I did not spell that right!}) for years, no issues since 1990, but the insurance company made the Dr. change his meds. The new one didn't work, (at all), and they were afraid it was leaking. (For good reason, he wasn't feeling right, had a monster headache, and his BP was through the roof, at 180/110+!) The good news, is it is not leaking, but they think it came close to rupturing (again) today. (Based on ER CAT scan, they thought it was leaking, but later MRI revealed no leak, and then they really began worrying that it would start leaking if they couldn't get his BP back down to normal.) ICU tonight just to monitor closely BP and keep it down so there are no issues while they pump him full of the old meds that did work. (IV booster, and more than normal dosage tonight, then slowly get it to his regular dosage before releasing him.) So, while not a great day, it is still better than it could have been....

Howmus - Bear and cub on the little hill in the center? Speaking of bears, my friends, who were @hospital with us today, then took my sister out for some food, and to see a movie to distract her, (she has a learning disability, so does not really understand all that was going on, but knew enough to be scared something was really wrong) said they seen one, about 3 miles from my house tonight, and that he (or she, but thinking he based on size) had to be a good 650 pounds! (Husband is a hunter, and has gotten a bear before, so should be able to judge the weight pretty well, I think.) That is one big bear! (Now, all we need is for Lion to post another pic of a tiger, so we can have "Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!" Smile, Wink & Grin)

Ken - This is going to sound really stupid, crazy stupid actually, but, on your new modem, when plugged in, check your computers antivirus settings, and whatever the setting for secure/SSL/TTL sites is, reverse it. I know,"it sounds crazy, but it just might be crazy enough to work".... (Fixed my Dad's computer right away that way, for some reason new equipment made his antivirus setting change, disabling  all web browsing. I only found it after checking on a known good computer {mine} and that was the only different setting, when I made it match mine, suddenly the Internet web browsing worked again.) WINDOWS computers get on my nerves sometimes.... (And this one, when I can't figure out the problem, I call a friend who does computer repair/technical support, for many companies in my area, and even he didn't know what was wrong, because everything he thought to check, I already had! When I told him what I finally found, he was shocked, as that setting shouldn't change on its own. He then ran into that issue the next week at a company he is the tech guy for, and called me up to ask me again which setting it was, when I told him, he reversed it, getting them back up immediately as well. Odd thing was, their computers needed to be opposite of my Dad's setting for that one, hence the advise to just reverse it.) If reversing the setting does not work, put it back, and stick with the old modem that works. (The antivirus is the same one that my friend installs, and tells others to get, and his computer was set like mine, and how my Dad's now is, with that setting switched off, but others need it switched on to web browse correctly... WINDOWS, Uhg!

Weather: Sunny, Hot, and Humid. That about covers it.

W**k: Crazy on Thursday and Friday, called off today, and will be calling off tomorrow, as family comes first. (My boss was cool, asking if there was anything she could do, and if I needed anything. She also volunteered to cover for me, and then asked if I needed her to come to hospital at the end of the day. As I had friends thre at the time, I declined the offer. But, nice to know that some bosses care about their employees!) Gonna hurt the paycheck, as hours were already cut this coming week, starting tomorrow, but, more important thing is family.

Well, all have a good night!

I'm in the mood for an early breakfast. (Warning: Odd item request.) Cut up some of that BBQ chicken and put it into an omlette for me, please. Add to that a couple pieces of wheat toast and some OJ.

ricktrains: I fully understand being with family. Many years ago when my maternal Grandmother went into renal failure as a side effect from congestive heart failure, as soon as I could, I came home. I ended up spending nearly a week home as a result. With my paternal Grandfather, I managed to do a quick turnout where I was home just long enough for the funeral. (As an aside, the day of his funeral is one that I will never forget: 9/11/01. I was riding on a bus on the way home when the driver announced that we were the only mass transit moving and that NYC had been attacked.) At that time I was working an overnight job. I was rather tired by the time I was done the morning of the 12th.

Good Afternoon!

I was disconnected from the Internet for nearly two days, after the heavy downpours we had flooded the hub we are linked up to. There is an advantage of having all communication lines nicely buried in the ground vs. having them dangling from some whimsical post in mid-air, but when it comes to antediluvian rainfall, this can be a bad trap. It took the service crew 30 hours to get everything working again.

Being such a long time without any link to the outside world can give one the creeps. We don´t have a mobile phone (too expensive) so we had no means to call 1-10 (that´s our 9-11) in case of an emergency.

Now that I am back again - Zoe, coffee and some cake would just be fine, thank you!

Edit: I treated myself to some old Marklin tin-plate track to run my old boxcab electric on. I bought it off the "Bay" for surprisingly little money, unused, in the original box - much cheaper than regular HO scale track! Should be with me by the middle of next week!

no issues since 1990, but the insurance company made the Dr. change his meds.

At the risk of sounding "political," this is not the way medicine is supposed to work.  I'll trust my doctor before I trust Flo from Progressive, any day.

Good morning ..

ATSF ... Those sound like good ideas for "pike sized" passenger trains. ... I like putting together short passenger trains myself. I think one of the most attractive prototypes for a pike sized passenger train was the CB&Q Kansas City Zephyr which typoically has all Budd stainless steel cars except the baggage/mail car which normally was an old heavweight car painted silver.

........

I will be leaving shortly for my trip to MI, and will not be posting much if any for a few days.

Happy Model Railroading

Train Front Good News! Surprise About 3 weeks ago my Proto 1000 UP F7A seemed to have BBQ'ed a decoder. Tonight (it was Storm when I got home so no yard work) I tried reading it's decoder with Decoder Pro. Seems the decoder is fine? Sat it on the track and away she went! I was cleaning the oval around K-10 Mining and it made it around like 5 times and just stopped? Not sure what happened but I am happy it is not dead!

Ken - This is going to sound really stupid, crazy stupid actually, but, on your new modem, when plugged in, check your computers antivirus settings, and whatever the setting for secure/SSL/TTL sites is, reverse it.

Rick The fact computers work in the first places seems a little crazy to me. Where do I find the Antivirues Settings? I am running the free version of AVG and using XP Pro. I wonder if I install the new modem and reinstall AVG if that would work?

Well I am happy right now. Sure glad to get the UP back on the rails.

 Later Ken

Yes, I know that not a F7A. Only UP photo I have handy.

Ken, that sounds suspiciously like the problem I had with one of my Proto 1000 subway cars.  It was running fine and then one day it died.  I pulled out the decoder and the motor and lights were fine with a 9V battery, so I replaced the decoder, programmed it successfully and took it out for a spin.  After a short time it died again, and the decoder was no longer responsive.

It was an intermittent short in the motor, a problem that a certain LION led me to.  I works fine, but if you run it slowly enough the motor will stall at that point and burn out the decoder.  I replaced the motor (and the second decoder) and it's been fine ever since.

Hey all

Great weekend. Dropped the kids off with grandparents who are taking the kids to the beach for a week. MOH and I went to Harper ferry.WVA. Funny thing happened while there. A train went by. But the bed is raised way above the road. So to see the train you have to scramble up the hill to see it. I was surprised by the amount of people from all walks of life and age scramble as quickly as they could to watch the train go by.

It's just not true that the interest is dieing.

After that MOH and I went out to a very nice restaurant in Flint Hill. Very classy place. She was so excited. It was a good day. Then today we went to church and heard testimonials from a number of people who went to Zambia Africa on a mission trip. Very touching and enlightening. After which we went out to lunch and then to Wally world for some essentials.

MOH is calling. TTYL
