Ray ... Our computer was slowing down. Next, Microsoft Word stopped working altogether. Re-intalling Office did not work. So, I called Apple tech support,, and they said I should upgrade to new.   The upgrade was just completed at about midnight last night, and I have not tried doing much yet..... I'll have a list of complaints for technical support when I call them back.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Raison Bran cereal and a large pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee for my FGLK Mug please (and Thank You).

Sun is out shining today here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS this morning.  Supposed to be mostly sunny all day.  I will be heading to Rochester thise evening for the annual Banquet of the R&GV RR Museum.  Keynote Speaker this evening is Mike Smith, President of the Finger Lakes Railway!  Always a fun time.

Didn't get in here yesterday to post.  Every time I started to, something came up that needed my attention....

Garry, what was your old OS on your iMac?  I too have a five or six year old machine running "Lion".  I know I will have to update sometime this year or I will not be able to do my own taxes next year....  I don't like what I hear about the new OS from Apple...   Among other things they say there is no support for CDs and DVDs.  Can you still run and burn them on your iMAc now that you have "upgraded"?  They have made so you have to spend, spend, spend to do the things that you used to be able to just do on the computer...  Not happy about the things I hear.  Guess it's OK if you want to do everything in some cloud someplace or other.  I have my own backup and extra harddrives right here by the computer.  Don't want to send all my information off to someplace that I'm sure will make use of all my personal information...... (Rant over!)

I have to get a long list of things done today, so I best get moving.  Catch you all later!

We'll get there sooner or later!

Good morning ...

Steven ..... Thanks for informing us about the new password requirements. I think mine is already consistant with the new requiremnts. ....... If you want to do all of us a big favor...... not only the Diners, but all forum memebrs...... Can you arrange for the post bodies to allow our spell check to work. My tiping is terrrible.

Passwords ........ As great as the computers are, the certainly can be troublesome.... Password requiremnts are becoming more strict. Even a model railroad site must do that now. ......

Computers ...... Hard to believe our Imac is now five years old. We've been having issues with it. I called Apple technical support. I was please with their willingness to help. I spoke with Americans located in the USA. (What a concept !) ....... We still had the orignal operating System, and they helped update that. It took hours for the computer to prcess the update. (from mid afternoon to midnight) .  We are just getting started with the new OS now, and it is too early to say if it is working well for us. .... Getting used to a differnt format for Safari is already challenging to me. It is not working as it should for some of the things we do.

That's all for now. .... Happy Model Railroading

On the sticky you said something about " few of you who use an older Internet browser may need to update your software to log in". I use Firefox, will that still work? What about XP Pro, will it still work as well?

Firefox is up to version 45.0, and everything above version 20.something was self updating. If your version of FF is in the 20s then update it (Help... Update).

Windows XP is an operating system, not a browser, nonethelss, newer updates of java and flash will no longer run on that platform. An XP machine should be replaced unless the contents are non-critical and can be lost to hackers. There have been no updates for XP for many months. The machine may or may not be updatable to Windows 10, and in any event will not be a free update.

When you add the cost of Win 10 plus memory for an obsolete machine, it is cheaper to buy a new one.

I am indulging in one of my favorite pastimes - watching train videos.

A few moments ago I found one showing the steam operated line between Oberwald and Realp in Switzerland. The line was closed when the base tunnel was completed in 1981, allowing year- around train services, while the mountain line had to close for operation in each September. After a few years of laying dormant, the line was resurrected by the members of a preservation society formed immediately after the line had been closed. It took thousands and thousands of hours of volunteer labor to bring the line back to life. Even more thrilling is the fact, that a crew of people went to Vietnam, to where the original steam locos had been sold to in the early 1950´s, after the line was electrified in 1942. Bringing back the locos from that Vietnamese mountain village must have been some adventure. The locos were restored from rusty hulks to working order in Germany.

I was able to ride the line as a 10 year old in 1966, not behind a steam engine, but one of the old electrics from the days of electrification - the one in my avatar!

Enjoy the following video:

Sir Madog

Good Morning!

My automatic log in must still be working, so maybe I am not affected by MR´s security update. This move may not upgrade the site´s security, but it is certainly a neat and clever way to get rid of those thousands of dormant accounts Smile, Wink & Grin

I am not sure what I´ll be able to make out of this day. I hardly got any sleep last night and I feel wasted already at this early time in the day. Maybe running a train on my layout will perk me up a little, but that´s about all I can do as I am pretty much out of material to work with. The next bigger thing to do is to install the backdrop. for which I need a pair of skilled extra hands to help. Unfortunately,  I was not yet able to recruit this help.

Tomorrow, we have state elections in three of those 16 states we have in this country. Whatever the outcome will be, there won´t be a winner, just one big loser - democracy in this country. It´s time to pack up and go to a place, where there is freedom and sunshine!

You're sadly not alone, Mein Herr.  I'd love to comment on our current 10 ring circus in the US, but the mods would probably beat me with cudgels and morning stars -- even if some of the budget ideas of some candidates would kill international trade and wreck the hobby (and everything else).  Just a complete fiasco.

The mail man brought a small parcel, which contained the sound device I had sent back to the vendor, because it was not working properly. Well, it does now and the reason it didn´t work when I tried it out gave me one of those "duh!" moments. The device works only with .mp3 files, which is clearly stated in the manual, but the file I uploaded to it was a .wav file. No wonder it wouldn´t work! I converted the file and now it works nicely. I have to do something about my layout´s 230V power upply before I can hitch it up, though. My friend Lothar as an electrician will come in handy for that job!

Come to think of it, I might uy another two of these sound device - one for the church bells and one for the moo cows! I bet Petra will enjoy the cacophony ...Whistling

Uncle_Bob

Hi all

Tomorrow is the local train show in downtown Bimminton.  Ill probably go, look around, and head out without buying much.  I'll probably see if there's much rail traffic before going to see Dad.  My wife and I have been sick as dogs for weeks, but we're finally getting better.  I haven't visited the boards much as a result.  Anyway, maybe see you there, Galaxy.

I don't know if I'll go. There is a coin show in Oh-We_Go too that I want to go to...I THINK I have MOST of the train stuff I want/need/can use! {REALLY???}

So I will check out my new burgeoning hobby...coin collecting!

SO I doubt I will go to bingo.

thanks anyway, also, it is like Roberson's train {and doll} show, I will find nothing there....

SO I changed my password from "passwordletmein1234" to "chuffchuffchuff".

 Evening Dinners!

 Flo, Beer Please.

YGW, My Jerry Story For Today. Today I had to run the Florsanit store in MO. I did not want to run the store for the fact it is 25 miles from my house and my store is 10 miles from the house. Powers That Be said it would be better that I ran the store because I was equiped. Meaning I know more and make less mistakes.

Got to the store and just before I pulled in a white car pulled in the lot. I drove to the back of the store to get the key that was hidden under a rock, and pulled back to the front. Much to my Surprise there stood Jerry! Smile, Wink & Grin I opned my car door and first thing Jerry said was "I don't have a key to get in"? Then "What are you doing here, I was scheduled to work here"? Then he pulls out the schedul and shows me where My Name was listed at Florsanit. Then he got a blank look on his faces when he realized he should have been in my store not here! Whistling

Called the Powers That Be and said guess who is here? Gave Jerry the keys and code to the alarm. Drove to my store, a hour trip and opened the store a hour late. Far as I am concern it was great, I did not want to work in Florsanit anyway, much shorter time to get home!  Big Smile

Far as the Proto 2000 2-8-8-2, if you might want it, I bet it will still be there when you are ready!

Lately for the past few years I had pigeons trying to live under the garage. Next year they started a build a nest with a few pieces of branches. Now they succeed a few more.

Have you thought of covering where they're getting in with a wooden lattice?  If you bury it a bit into the ground it will keep out other creatures, too.  Get the pressure-treated stuff and it will last a while.

Does anyone have ideas?

Have you thought of getting a statue?

Next to turkey, pigeon is the best tasting game bird.

Couldn't sleep last night and was putting decals on the caboose and a NOS RS1 shell I bought 16 years ago.  Of course I had no energy today and got nothing done except a nap.

You will need wires around 8" long, on two inch centers to discourage the pigeons. They can be purchased through most lumber yards, or you can make your own out of coat hangers cut to 10-12 inches. I have made these in a pinch, used 2X2 to stick the wires in, and screwed to the drip edge. Make sure you cut notches for the water to drain as it comes off the roof.  Over the years I have installed more footage than I care to remember along the drip edge of many of the Sea Captain's homes here in the area. Most 3 1/2 stories off the ground. The pigeons would line up, some with their butt hanging over the edge of the roof. When they let go it left streaks down the siding. (now there is a weathering idea) The ones that stood out the most were the windows on the Widow's Walks on the top of the roof. Those roofs were the hardest to install from a ladder.

My brother has a carport that the swallows nested in, and pooed on his car. He obtained a rubber rattle snake, put it overhead, (snakes scare birds) and had them proceed to build a nest in the middle of said snake.

I helped him hang a large blue tarp just under the rafters, problem solved.

One of our customers was intoduced to a pellet rifle, I don't think his neighbors ever figured out how their cats became such good hunters.

They seem to be in "team colors" so I strung them out along the same road.

This is how I see it--it is the same guy (usually me) captured in a sequence of events.

  • Guy has banana (or water bottle, or gel packet, or...)
  • Guy drops banana
  • Guy stops to go back for banana

On the cycling front, I am always amazed at the difference a clean, lubed drivetrain makes. I cleaned and lubed mine before this morning's ride and it was like someone strapped a rocket on my back. (Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration.)

Afternoon Diners,

Lately for the past few years I had pigeons trying to live under the garage. Next year they started a build a nest with a few pieces of branches. Now they succeed a few more.

When this was happening I was planning on placing a bed of nails (screws). So yesterday I finally built one 15x10 inch with about 24 screws.

Now comes the shocking news. They are willing to continue to build a nest with 3" long screws. I thought my idea would work. But I don't know if it will now.

Does anyone have ideas?

Mr. B Love the cyclist - how did you fasten them so that they satyed upright ?

Ailene's Tacky Glue.  I put a dab on the bottom of each wheel, put the biker in place and support him with whatever is nearby and not glued down, typically a car or truck or maybe a small screwdriver.  An hour or two later the glue will be set and I can remove the supports.

Another nice thing about Ailene's is that it does not fully harden.  If I need to move a figure it comes off easily, and if I accidentally bump into it, the glue is the weakest part and I won't break the wheels of a bike or feet of a standing figure.  It's a cheap craft-store item, too.

Morning all ( Is it afternoon in Germany Ulrich ? )

Ken you will appreciate this story - it is a Jerry story -

There is this young couple from my Church and the husband ( we will call him Tim for the purposes of this post ) anyway he is an office type vs. a handy around the house type.

He needed work so I told him I would pay him X amount of dollars to help me remodel and clear fence rows. Yesterday he was to prepaint some trim before I install it ( Prime and semi gloss ) he painted about 15 minutes and then came inside sat down to "take a break" Bang Head after about two hours of working and breaking he came in announced that he had primed all of the trim. Great I thought. So I go outside to get him started on the semi gloss. First thing I see is a stack of crown mold unpainted ! Bang Head So I ask him why he didnt paint them. He says - I ran out of boards to lay them on. I look at him and think UH OH. I ask Tim why didnt he get more boards from the stack to lay them on his reply - he didnt know Bang Head

I tell him to go get more and as we are laying out the un pianted boards for him to prime I take a look at the boards he has already primed. Then I realize he has painted the WRONG SIDE ! He painted the side that goes agianst the drywall ! Bang HeadBang HeadBang Head He has painted the wrong side of over HALF of them !

So now I have paid Tim to take a break every fifteen minutes and to do half of it wrong !!!!

So I get him straightened out and going in the right direction. After I finished what I was doing I had to help him finish the work Bang HeadBang HeadBang HeadBang Head

It was not all a disaster. I took the oppurunity to teach this young man some life lessons. I explained to him that a man when he has a family he does what is necassary to provide for his family, how to properly paint, how to keep working even when it is painful and do it so it doesnt hurt, he gained a bunch of handi man skills that he can now take home to use to take care of his family.

Mr. B Love the cyclist - how did you fasten them so that they satyed upright ?

Ulrich - Hope you feel better, I am glad that even though you feel bad you keep in touch. That is hard to do when you feel bad. You do an amazing job on the videos.

Galaxy - That was a good word of the day. That word is one that I can relate to with the work I am in.

Ken - I will have to pass my frig has gone on teh blink and I am helping Tim out paying him to work around here. That is using up my extra funds for now. If it there later then maybe I can think anout getting it.

No, the cyclist came that way.  It's a Preiser set I've had for a few years now.  There are 2 others:

Go AHead, Make YOUR day!

I´ll try my very best, Galaxy!

Good Morning!

The sun is out, making me feel a tad better than yesterday. You could still send me to the floor with a touch of a feather, but at least the new medication I have to take seems to do its job.

I made a new video of my layout this morning. Still not the best quality as the light conditions are pretty bad. I still have to work out how I can add lighting to my layout.

Here is the video:

I´ll be staying at the RC for a moment, should someone care to join me there!

frontispiece

PRONUNCIATION:
(FRUN-ti-spees) http://wordsmith.org/words/frontispiece.mp3

MEANING:
noun:
1. An illustration facing or preceding the title page of a book.
2. A facade, especially an ornamental facade, of a building.
3. An ornamental pediment over a door or window.

ETYMOLOGY:
The word was formed by corruption of French frontispice by association with the word ‘piece’. It’s from Latin frontispicium (facade), from front- (front) + specere (to look). Ultimately from the Indo-European root spek- (to observe), which also gave us spy, spice, species, suspect, expect, spectrum, despise, despicable, bishop, telescope, specious, speciesism, soupcon, prospicient, perspicuous, speculum, omphaloskepsis, and conspectus. Earliest documented use: 1598.

USAGE:

“I still have the physical copy, its frontispiece decorated with characters from the stories.”
