Ok Ok Ok

No need to read obits or send out the platoons.

I just haven't felt like posting. Either been busy, or just not felt like it.

What with Christian's suicide, and the spot on my lung looming { I hope to learn the CT results Friday}, and all, I have been contemplating life, and contemplating where My life has been, where it is now, and where it may go-good or bad test results- in the future.

Still have a nagging cough and we are wondering about the indoor air quality of the house. May cost us something like a few hundred dollars, but we'd like to know. I find when I go out to someplace else my breathing gets  easier. but as soon as I hit thedoor here, my lungs get tight and actually start to hurt. I've had the cough and thusly pneumonia about since I moved in. THe first two nights my nose, throat, and lungs got dried out but I thought was because I forgot to fill the resevoir on the CPAP. BUT: i have had to increase the humdity by 400% to get relief, and MOH is always complaining if the humidity in the house goes below 50% as the air is too dry. Now it could simply be the heat running, OR it could be the business they ran here had chemicals used, and worst of all, if they were manufacturing something illegal like meth, it could render the house unusable according to news reports, and must be disclosed upon sale.

I ran an experiment and opened the LR door and the bath window, about almost opposites for quick cross ventilation. I could breath easier then in the draft, but when I closed them, it got worse again. so we are wondering. will have to contact residential testing services. ALso there IS a radon mitigatgion system in the basement, don't knpw what if anything, that may have to do with anything, should make that better.

Now, I am not contemplating following Christian's path, or rather my previous path of attempts trying to succeed this time, and am not really down in the dumps, just contemplating. Contemplating, contemplating.

MOH, upon learing about the spot on my lung, Immediately said "I don't know what I am going to do without you". SO MOH  has me dead and buried already! Lets all hope, pray and keep fingers crossed that it is NOTHING more than a spot on an Xray.

SO, If I am missing the next few days dont worry. I am just contemplating, plus I have 8 medical appts. in 5 days this week.

Busy rest of the month, which may get interrupted if somethinf is more than jsut a spot on an Xray.

take care

Hi all

Just a polite warning on the lamingtons you won't be able to stop at just oneBig Smile

If you have an extra sweet tooth and a spare as well try the ones with jam and cream.

My sympathy also goes out to the victims of the train wreck not being a very religeous person, perhaps someone who is could say a prayer on my behalf.

Those in a cold snap could I borrow some cold its a wonderfull 42c today and we are having a bit of a heat wave should be over in a couple of days but it's not helping the Fireie's down south much.

Their having a bit of a hard time down that way and its not been help by a fire bug, perhaps smokey could invite him to lunch if they catch them nah! bad idea don't want to give smokey food poisoning.

OOW a Tube Map havn't seen one of those for 42 years used to get from Liverpool St to Holbourn (spelling) twice a year and go to near Holloway twice a year to see late favorite Aunt who was Hospital Matron @ Holloway she would have had to be as hard as iron for that job but I never saw that side of her.

Not doing much of anything exept hiding in air conditioning glue and paint drying to fast.

regards John

Good Morning!

The death toll of the Bad Aibling train accident has risen to 10 now and could even go higher. Inquieries into what caused the two trains running head-on on the same track continue. While some allocate the responsibilty to the dispatcher acting carelessly, others state that, given all the electronic security devices, it had required a "deliberate act" of terrorism. I wonder whether we will ever learn the real cause!

Looking at the grim statistics of train wrecks in Germany in the past 50 years, it is interesting to see that most of them happened in Bavaria - maybe too much Beer?

John - thanks for posting the tube map. Brings back memories of my time in London, when I was taking to District Line from Ealing Broadway to Embankment station every morning. That´s a quarter of a century ago - Sigh

No saw in the mail today - I am miffed (pardon this BE expression)!

Galaxy, good to see you back.  I'd go nuts if I had to wait that long for an xray result.

I'm on deck for one of those for my hip after I see the quack today.  It started hurting 2 years ago and now it's waking me up at night.  Unless you broke it, symptoms are always worse than the actual hip xray.

The last three Washington DC subway fatal incidents were all caused by problems that were known not but not fixed.  How no one has been tried for negligent homicide, I do not understand.  We put too much faith in technology.

The glue is drying on the 2" foam and I was up late playing around with SCARM, squeezing too much track into the available space.

3" of forecast snow, tuned into a day of rain and a light dusting.  It's already above freezing so it won't last long.

Good Afternoon!

I need a break!

The saw finally arrived - the mailman was later than usual so I didn´t expect it to come today. It already "saw" a lot of action and the "heavy stuff" of putting the foam scenery in is now done! It was a formidable mess, but SWMBO didn´t give me "the look" - that will come later. It won´t be the last time for me to make a mess - there is still a lot of fine shaping and texturing to do!

Glad to see Galaxy back - I was worried!

Janie, coffee and a slice of that apple pie, topped with vanilla ice cream und rum raisins, please.

Interesting title, and I felt the need to share a little levity and how it relates to my railroad.

Many moons ago early on in my marriage, I went with my wife to her folks on Long Island to go out for dinner. There were 6 of us, her folks, her brother and his friend. I asked are we going to the usual Saturday night spot, the local Italian restaurant. One person wasn’t in the mood for Italian, so I suggested Chinese. Another suggestion was the deli. That was shot down. Since no one could make up their mind, I suggested we all go the diner since diners have something for everyone (at least they should). First off, you should know Neal hates diners. The only time I went to them was back in the 70’s when I worked in the bar. Close the place at 4AM and go across the street to the diner for something that we called breakfast. Finally arrive at the diner. Waitress comes over, starts to take orders from all of us. What does everyone order (except me)? ITALIAN!! Unreal!!

Fast forward to my railroad. I have a number of structures on the layout or waiting to be built. Most if not all have names that have meaning to me in my life, or to family and friends. For instance, I have a flat structure named Freihoefers Bakeries. This name brings back fond memories to my wife and her brother when they were at sleep away camp in the late 60’s/early 70’s in the Adirondacks as that was the cookie of choice back then. I decided I needed a structure that would service both reefer cars and general freight box cars. What name would fit the bill? I came up with C&P Restaurant Supply. What does the C&P stand for? C&P = Choke & Puke! The motto on the building will read: C&P Restaurant Supply – Food To Die For!

To this day, I only go to the diner with my model railroad friends when we have our monthly operating sessions. This is where we gather to start our day. They all know Neal hates diners. Hope I didn’t ruin anyone’s meal!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the #2 special, over easy eggs, bacon, homefries, and a double order of the sour dough toast please.  Oh and give Galaxy a refill of whatever he is having!

Hey Galaxy, good to have you here this morning!  Do know that you have been and are in my prayers with all that life has thrown at you lately.  Do get the folks to test the jouse and find out what is causing your allergies.  Most likely something that can be rectified, but if not you should have legal recourse I woulf think.

I have been trying to set up a meeting with a couple Scout Executives and a few people on the Pack/Troop Committee to discuss the DDSO Grant money the units get for the handicapped Scouts.  The grant needs to be renewed next year and all is in chaos on several things needing to be done for it.  Of course getting the meeting arranged is one of those trying to find a moment or two in a bunch of very busy peoples lives to sit down and get things done...  The other Commissioner who knows a lot more than I about it spent yesterday at the hosp;ital with his wife.  They thought she had a mini-stroke, but after hours of tests and such things decided she had a major migraine headache that made her blind in one eye!  The eye is now fine and her sight is the same as it was before, none of the tests showed any sign of a stroke.  So, as they were leaving Dave (her husband and one of my best friends) who is blind on one side from a major stroke he had a couple years ago turned and whacked his head on the elevator door spliting the skin big time right above his eye.  He asked a nurse if they had a first aid kit (always the Scouter!).  He got rushed to the Emergency Room and recieved 5 stiches.....  That explains why I could get him on the phone yesterday.

I need to get moving, take my shower and head over to the Feildhouse for a walk!  Catch you all later!

A big and hearty Welcome !

Neal - the good thing about this places is it serves the kind of food you like and the way you like it. If you dig greasy burgers (like our friend Barry does) - go for it. If you are a little weak in your stomach and require steamed and tasteless veggies for your diet - they´ve got it! Even palatable organic food is on the menu - should you like to have that!

The most importand issue in the diner, however, is friendship!

Cousin Vinnie tells me that the chef wants to put together a special "Taste of Home" menu that includes one item from each Forum patron's home area. I suggested deep-fried cheese curds from Wisconsin, though he kept hinting about craft beers instead. BeerWinkThumbs Up What else should go on the menu? Dinner

What else should go on the menu?

That´ll be knuckle of pork, sauerkraut and potato dumplings and, of course, plenty of the local brew...

Mind if you spare me out on this one?

Ick!

This meal is said to be the epitome of the German kitchen, but you can´t pay me enough to eat it. I´d rather go for a nice steak, medium, a baked potato w/sour cream and a nice side dish of either string beans or a salad w/ blue cheese dressing!

Lobstah!

We had no power Friday and Saturday thanks to the snowstorm, so I went out to the closest thing we've got to a diner for breakfast.  I hadn't been there in years, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself, both for the food and for the people.  There's just something about diner coffee, served in a cup with sides half an inch thick, that can not be beat.

Nice Boat.

House of LION has 100kw generator. Our peak load (Sunday) is about 40kw, our norma hotel loadings are about 20kw. So LION gots plenty of power snowy storms or no.

NYCT thinks Canal Street is a two strack scation, LION has only on track, (the return track being on the other side of a 6' wide table and carries the monkier "Chambers Street". Opposite site is photograph pasted to the wall.

LION wants diner to serv fresh WILDEBEEST.

Elias however will settle for a RARE RibEye Steak, (fat left in tact).

MMMMMMmmmmmm....... suculent!

Tiere od potatoes, Ill take the Rice instead. Easier to eat.

I'm Baaaaaaccccckkkkk!

Did just under a mile today over at the fieldhouse.  Tomorrow or Friday I will get it up to a mile...

Chloe, I understand we are supposed to order and share some local foods...  Well I do that, many mornings when I order Buckwheat Pancakes (Birkett Mills in Penn Yan makes the best mix for that) and local NYS Maple Syrup.  But for lunch I'll have a Beef on Weck http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/roast-beef-on-weck-recipe.html and a dozen hot Buffalo Wings http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/buffalo-wings-recipe.html and a glass of a good Seneca Lake Riesling http://www.foxrunvineyards.com/wine.asp (any of these would do nicely).  Oh a slice of the Concord Grape Pie for dessert would do nicely too.  Yeh, I know, but I can't just limit it to one item.......

Looking outside the window there are a bunch of little white thingies falling out of the sky.  Nothing to worry about, less than an inch predicted.

Catch you all later!

Diner needs some perogies and borsch.  I'll second the Johnsonville brats.  Last night daughter took us to a little neighborhood place that served ski chips (homemade kettle fries) with melted bleu cheese, very tasty and unhealthy.  Can you tell I have been contaminated by Ukrainian immigrants during the summer in northern Saskatchewan.

Good Afternoon Diners,

Flo, I'll have my usual extra large coffee with lots of cream, please.

Well, in the Chicago area we would have to include Italian beef sandwiches, the finest hot dogs on the planet, and of course mouthwatering deep dish pizza!

However, I'm with Dennis.  In-n-Out Burgers all the way! They were voted the best burger in 3 counties, LA, Orange, and San Diego.  That's a lot of people.  Not to mention they have the best fries, too.

Gotta get back to work.

I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

Welcome to Neal !

Steven... Menu items from KY.  Southern style breakfast: eggs, grits, country ham, and biscuits with gravy.  Fried chicken. Pork chop sandwich with hot sauce. Burgoo with hot sauce. Kentucky hot brown sandwich. ... And of course, Kentucky Derby Pie.

If forced to pick one, it would be derby pie.

If you think Maryland, you must think of crab cake sandwiches.  This time of year the crabs have burrowed into the mud in the Chesapeake Bay, so that other delicacy of Delaware and the Eastern Shore happens to be in season.  Big plate of muskrat for me Flo.

Here in Mississippi we have some WEIRD foods like Collard greens, black-eyed purple hull peas, cheese grits, Gumbo, Crawfish (mud bugs) Etouffee.

Personally, I'd only like to see gumbo on the menu - the other stuff is inedible for a cranky old brit like me.

BigDaddy - I vote for crab cakes. Done properly they are delish.

P.S. Glad to hear Galaxy reply - I dont know him - only from what I read in this post. Hope everything works out okay for you.

Hey all

Excuse me while I dust off the construction dust! Geez they are trying to kill me around here. Settling a house a week, which entails Elevator inspections ( if it has one ) final inspections of Fireplace, HVAC,plumbing, electric, building, Gas, 10 page punch lists (takes three days to write the list ), Residential use permit, fire marshall lane inspections ( waste of time and our money ) then once these have all been completed and passed then you have to "walk" the house with a HO, ( thats a whole day used up ) then you have to rewalk the "list" with the HO five days later !! That is what it takes to deliver a house each week on each house - Phew makes me tired just thinking about it !

Howmus - Concord grape pie ??!! Oh that sound good. I LOVE concord grapes can you describe how it taste ?

Ulrich - You dont like sauerkraut ???? I love it especially with a litle sausage ground up and dropped in and then warmed - yummy or on a hot dog and bun, or with that big round fat sausage forget what they are called..

Neal - LOL C&P that is a good one

Henry - DC subway is that the Metro you are discussing ? Yea they have not done well here. I hear they have fianally hired a director. Maybe he can turn it around.

Galaxy - I had a spot. Turn out to be my nipple. Pray for a good report.

Der - Really ? A British phone number ? I am surprised by that I thought it was a reference to teh locomative in your picture.

John Neal - hello and welcome to teh forum

UP831 - Well ! Nice seeing you here again !

Steve Otte- Virginia has so many foods we are famous for. I will name a list of them and you can pick ...Va hams ( Smithfield hams ) , Smoked hams, Apples ( we used to lead the world in apple production ) Peaches , Scrapple/Sausage , Beef ( Black angus and Hereford ), Peanuts, Virginia Oysters ( yuck ), Cheasapeake bay blue crabs, Wines - Vineyards all over the stinking place, Fried apple pies Dinner, apple butter, Marble cake, Damson Plums....So Steve I am not sure which one to pick but I can assure you anyone of them will knock the tastebuds off of the ole tongue.

Gotta get back to w**k

Okay - you must have psychic abilities or have a telescope into my kitchen I love black pudding - but can't get the real thing over here - only copies. Tired to make it myself but you can't buy pigs blood over here - only the dried stuff.

Roast beef and yorkshire pudding with roast potatoes are served frequently.

I also love Haggis - and its much tastier than most people think.  Admittedly, it looks gross when you cook it - but you eat the contents not the casing.

Darn it, now I am gonna have to order some black pudding - getting cravings already.

Steve Otte:

Here in the Binghamton NY area {affectionately called BINGO town} we have something called "spedies",cubes of chicken, pork or beef marinated at least over night if not a day or two { good italian dressing will suffice if you don't have Salamida's State Fair Spedie sauce, or LUPO's spedie sauce, then carbroiled over open flame then put in a bun or preferrably another local favorite, Roma's Italian freshly baked bread...delcious!

I am sure RAY can confirm about them...he used to live around  these parts...

Ulrich,

About 30 years ago I had the pleasure to visit Frankfurt (businesss trip) and had dinner at a restuarant where I ordered what the owner called "swinesteak" or thats what it sounded like. Of course he was German and me English so there may be a problem with the translation. Anyhoo - I assumed it was some form of shoulder of pork - but cannot find a recipe. Do you know what it is?

I also had a much nicer time in the Black forrest about 10 years ago - I had "wild hog" in a restuarant in the mountains. This was wild hog on a wooden board - diners were invited to bring thier own hunting knives to carve the beast at the table. We also drank "mead" from a bulls horn and tasted various Schnapps  I also had some "real" black forrest gateau - I think is called Schwarzwald -Torte - YUM.

P.S. I actually found the website for the restaurant and Sago still runs it...

Howmus - Concord grape pie ??!! Oh that sound good. I LOVE concord grapes can you describe how it taste ?

Well....  Grape pie tastes like ahhhh.... Concord grapes mostly with a lot of sugar and a touch of lemon juice.  My MIL who was an amazing pie maker used to make them in the fall of the year when the grapes were ripe.  Pretty much a seasonal thing.  Goooooooooddddd! Here is a recipe: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/12289/concord-grape-pie-i/

Concord Grapes and Niagara Grapes are native varieties that were used long before the "White Man" arrived.  The Hodenosaunee also used Maple Syrup as a sweetener.

I think we will have a great menu (as always) here in the diner!  Thanks for starting this line of thinking Steven.
