Mornin'....

Zoe, just a small bowl of Heritage Flakes Organic Cereal with skim milk and a pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast coffee this morning...  Morning Blood sugar was way too high (171).  Must have overdone big time last night at the Bowl Game watching and dinner before that.

I have a dentist appointment early this afternoon and hope to get in a walk at the fieldhouse before then...  I will be spending part of the afternoon trying to get caught up with items needing my attention from the NMRA Division (like where and when the next (Spring) Meet will be!).

So.....  What happened to Galaxy?  Keeping him in my prayers for the moment!

Have a great day out there...

Afternoon all (it is in UK) I will just have a coke please ladies.

Garry things are beginning to settle after last years trials and tribulations. Today we had rain first thing but it is dry and quite sunny first time in nearly 3 months.

Chris It's great to find a few people who understand us Brits it can be a bit confusing at times but I am making progress, but I still have trouble with a few American expressions!

Ulrich I can feel your frustration it is annoying when you are promised something then they fail to deliver!

Health and happiness to all who visit "the diner"

GALAXY where are you? I do hope all is well with you Angel.

Good afternoon, diners.  It is cool and rainy this morning in SE Ohio.  Still stuffed from the Superbowl feast we had a friend's yesterday.

Track laying came to a halt over the weekend when I realized my plans were not going to work out,  I was trying to closely stack three turnouts to make a small yard but the geometry I was trying to achieve was not going to work out.  Now I have a big pile of turnout ties and regular ties that need to have the glue, paint and drywall compound cleaned off.  I am going to try a little more sophisticated attempt at laying out the yard entrance.  Printed off a bunch of track layout templates for curved turnouts and will now get out the sissors and do a cut and paste mock up of the yard entrance.  This is a learning experience for sure.

Hope Galaxy is okay.

Uhlrich, I don't believe I have ever seen the picture of the women and children in color used as the cover for your life in Essen in the early 50's.

Der, was that Uncle Guido in the trench coat under Vinnie's picture?

Have a great day.

As the saw didn´t even come today, I used the time to give my other FO loco an overhaul and replace the broken of detail parts.

Here she is, looking younger than ever:

DSC_0334_zps9sbx2l33.jpg

Jim - I have no idea where that picture comes from - I didn´t see it in the video. Actually, I was born in Düsseldorf, not Essen, but the cities looked very much alike in those years. While all of the WW II rubble was long gone in 1956, there were lots of barren properties with weeds growing tree high (no, not those kind of weeds Whistling). I did not have to share a bed with my older sister and brother, but the three of us shared one room. As an Assistant DA, my Dad´s salary was not as high as a skilled factory worker´s wage, but fortunately that changed drastically over the years. Meager, but happy days!

Not Marklin, but Bemo - a small German manufacturer (!) of German and Swiss narrow gauge locos and cars. Quite pricey, but there is lots to be found on Ebay and, with a little luck, even for a bargain. The above loco was 70% off the MSRP!

The loco runs on 12mm track, representing metre-gauge.

Good Late Afternoon Diners!
6660:
I decided to pick a pre drawn track plan, I believe it was called the Aberdeen and Rockfish. http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/11/t/115287.aspx the second track plan on top.
Interesting, and IIRC, the poster – P. Carrell is one of our MIAs – from some time ago. Good to see he’s still active in mmr. Use to w*rk for a phone company – I wonder if he still does…

Up831:
Der:  just a thought on you track plan.  At the corner of the "L" if you put a hill or some view blocker there, when the trains come around the curve they would make an "entrance" as it were, and proceed down that straight track through the yard.
– Hmm…well that gave me the back half of the afternoon at the computer! You’re right, and a suitably tunneled land mass provides just the entrance, as well as hiding the return loop effectively. The SCARM program’s fine tuning isn’t great so in automatically smoothing things out, it has half buried my industry! Also, the flat plateau is meant to higher in stages like the mountain in the corner; but try as I might I can’t convince it to do that.  I spent much of the time however seeing if my interchange track would work better up in that area. All in all, while it might, the direction reversal is probably more important to me. Here’s the new look.
And for completeness sake, the different interchange, sans reverse loop
a question for everyone.  If I want to add an avatar, what is the procedure?  What are the parameters?  Do I need to make like a thumbnail or what?
Avatar – Look att  he top right of this page and you’ll see underneath the green block saying Welcome (your name) an second field with a number of possible selections in two columns. The last on the left hand side is “Change Avatar”  Click on that and it will walk you through. No special sizing required, the Forum software does it all.

CN Charlie:

Der, What's wrong with Newcastle Brown? I used to like it but then again I haven't had any for quite some time. I'm not much of a beer drinker but prefer the darker stuff. Keith's IPA isn't bad though.
Well you had to go and ask! Long story short, after the farewell party we gave our close friend in 1966(as in Best Man at our wedding) as he prepared to emigrate to Canada, I had not a few Newcastle Brown Ales. As a result I was sick as a dog and swore off that brew permanently!

Henry:

Der you need to decide if it's color or colour.
For me it is and always will be colour – but if the code takes colour I’d be very surprised. Does it? Is that where I’m messing up?
Brother Lion sorry you have joined the sick bay crowd.  There are too many of us there.
I agree, there are – but in this case I think you’ll find Bro Elias, as infirmerer, was accompanying a patient to the doctor’s.

Dennis:
A old long ordinate freeway bridge over another freeway is being demolished in downtown LA. They say the concrete has weakened, sounds like baloney to me. So the freeway below is closed for a couple of days causing massive traffic jams, actually they did a lot of planning and warning to mitigate this as much as possible.
Saw your mayor telling everyone “The 101 will be open by such-and-such a time” That was before the weekend, I think, or maybe Saturday. Was that the highway in question? Trash blown all over? Is that the black bags acting like tumble weed? Yikes!

Ray:
Brother Elias, I don't know...  Those Wild Horses can have a lethal kick I hear...
Watched the last half of the final quarter. At that time the 5 point Favourites were down 7- 14 IIRC.  We find that the best of the best in sports is usually in the closing minutes of these championship games. The Stanley cup being a case in point. Not sports fans here – but when the chips are really down, the teams generally get serious and play amazingly. …and Johnboy’s heart would not have been disappointed by Mr. Manning! My 2 Cents

Ulrich:
I am worried about Galaxy! I assume they took him back into the hospital which he shouldn´t have left at all before being all well!
– I think you are right. We’ll hear from him as soon as he’s able. In the mean time Angel  Another  entertaining video, thanks. Kris and I were laughing at your choice of score, very apt – but I was somehow expecting to see a damsel in distress tied to the tracks as the music crescendoed!
there were lots of barren properties with weeds growing
…same in the UK as I recall. Known as “Bomb sites” and undeveloped for years. Passed not a few on my walk to the old location of the National College of Food Technology from the Tube in 1959.

Chris:
It took me months to design that PRR logo - but it looks good to me ;-)
– Looks good to me too!” All symbology appearing in this work is fictitious. Any resemblance to real logos, living or dead, is purely coincidental.” LOL Thinking about your “Do you meet each other?” question – there was another chap,  Teffy from Texas, who made a Grand Tour a few years back, and came to the Maritimes. He handed out plaques for hanging in our train rooms to the effect of where those who disapproved of the way we ran our empires could take their opinions! IIRC, he got lost on his way back to Halifax from our place – but not disastrously.  Thanks for the code – I’ll hazard that to see how it goes. I’ve saved the image for later.
I need a decaf and an order of  flapjacks - too early for flapjacks?
IIRC Flapjacks in the UK were something quite different from what they call pancakes in NA. At least, what my mother called Flapjack were – thick oatmealy things, substantial and I liked them.

Terry: Welcome back! I’ve been AWOL myself for quite some time.

Ken:
Still a good looking engine and for $35.00 what the heck!
and being an RS2, it’s shorter, isn’t it than the F Unit would be. So, easier to get into those stub spurs!

John:
and a lamington please
Lamingtons…seems they were on the menu 3 years ago – had to check your whereabouts – and I can now see why you’d favour them.  Don’t mind if I get some for myself…

Jim:
Der, was that Uncle Guido in the trench coat under Vinnie's picture?
My lips are of course, sealed Smile, Wink & Grin

Train Front: Cut the 18” door to give me my 10” and 3” sections. Ripped a 1x3 for the two strips to seal the open edges – cleaned the garage floor first, and put down a tarp so as to save the clean sawdust for later use in the scenery.  So, it has begun. Today I brought all the first batch of lumber, the doors and sections, a variety of tools and the bucket of screws down to the basement to acclimatize. Next job is to cut away the cardboard filling in the open edges of the door sections, clean that up and glue and finishing nail (I’ll use the small ones I also use for track laying ) the strips to fill the gaps.  Kris saw me still typing this and asked if anyone ever got any actual modeling done!  So, if I’m not in for a while, you’ll know what’s up with that!

Barry .... Since you are a moderator, do you have any idea how a post I started in the MR Forum ws moved to the Trains Forum?    . .... Model Railroaders may like to know brudges don't necessarily have to have guard rails, and it should be in the MR Forum.

Ulrich ... I like the red FO locomotive. I suppse when you complete your layout, FO Means "Finally Operating". Whistling

Probably the same way I got bombarded by Astronomy Magazine's emails, published by, guess who.  The option to unsubscribe sends me to a page were I can unsubscribe all the railroad related newletters but not Astronomy, whose customer support says "We can't find your account"

Slow burn are the only words I can post here. The experience seems to have impaired my ability to think in words longer than four letters.

Flo, I'll have a beer and some pretzels.

Thanks Ray for the help - Your hints worked like a charm. After Train Night this week, I will try to post a picture of part of the Marklin layout, and try to explain why someone today would still use Marklin trains, although I think that the answer will be obvious. I have to admit that when I was first invited to participate running these trains, i was quite hesitant.

No news form the Experts on the decoder I sent them;  No News=Good News? I hope so!

Thanks to all others who chipiped in withtheir tips andhelp onposting Photos - It's what makes the Diner such an inviting place to confab.

Evenin' Folks,

Janie, another cup of decaf would be in order.

Today has been a busy one!  Went over to the Fieldhouse and did 4 laps today.  I'm sure I could have kept on going for a couple more which would be a little over a mile, but decided not to push it.  What I did today was a little over 2/3rds. mile.  Tomorrow I shall try to do 5 laps, just under a mile.  Feels good to be back walking again.  Right after lunch I went over for my dentist appt.  No cavities, no copmplaints about my brushing either.  The lady dentist was on duty there today and she checked everything over and said, "I want to refit a couple of your crowns that hang over the teeth they are on.  I'm thinking, "Wonderful!  How many thousand will that set me back?"  So I asked...  She held her hand in a big circle...  Zero!  So I will make an appointment in a few weeks when things have settled down a bit around here.  She is concerned that food gets caught in between the teeth because there is a sharp edge to the crown where it meets the tooth.  I have noticed that and probably it will be better with the new crown.  That crown was put in by the guy who used to own the practice, but they accepted all corrections to his work when they took over.  They just went up big time in my estimation!!!

After the dentist, I went shopping for groceries, and no sooner got back from that when I found an email from an old Musician friend and RR nut.  He is assembling a rocket kit and found the decals they sent with the rocket are printed in Black letters and the letters on the photo of the rocket (and the prototype) are red.  So I told him to come over and I could reprint the decals for him with the letters in red....  Sometimes it is fun to show off what I can do with Photoshop and InDesign.....Smile, Wink & Grin   He now has a set of identical Decals in red!  I gave him the 50¢ tour of the SLOW and figured out he hasn't been here in about 5 years....  Found out that is because he has been battling cancer!  He is now basically in remission and doing very well.  Finally has picked up his instruments and wants to start playing again.  He is a former Music Teacher and organized an excellent local big band jazz group that played for many years in the area.  It was good to see him and chat for the evening!

MrMick you are most welcome.  Glad I could be of help!  The portals look great, BTW.

I just checked to see if I could find anything about Galaxy checking the local news down where he is.  No obituaries, so I assume he may have gone back to the hospital for his breathing problems or something else.  Maybe his 'puter is out of commission or something.  Will be keeping him in my prayers!

Hope everyone has a great night!

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, a Beer Please

Another boring day at work, only one customer. They bought and just in time There Kid Bomb went off and there little girl had some Lungs! Made a little extra, but better than nothing.

Credit Card Front. As some of you know I am trying to rebuild my credit. Hard to beleve when I bought my house 25 years ago my credit was so good that it delayed closing? Not a single late payment for 7 years, the bank thought it was a hack job.

I got a Capital One card 6 months ago with a $1,000.00 limt and was happy. But, I wanted a few more to help with the credit history. Had some more pre-approved BS offers with $75 and $100 a year fee's so I can make them money? No thanks!

Capital One did say if I make on time payments for 6 months they would raise my credit limt. I have been using the card a lot and making over payments sometimes 2 or 3 a month. I was hopping for a $1500.00 limt. Well I was Surprise today when I checked the account! I now have a $5,000.00 limit and that will give me a 11% credit usage. That will sure help my credit score! Yes

 Later Ken

Thanks, Barry .... I think model railroaders would like to know they may not have to include guard rails on bridges. Now, they won't know unless they look at the thread in Trains Forum. .... Actually, I have a bridge without guard rails, and eventually I was going to add guard rails to it. Now I see I do not need to.

Other stuff .... I corrected the track that was causing my BLI E7's to derail.

Lunchtime!

Flo, I´ll go for a Barry-sized burger with all the works and Coffee to go with it, please.

Still no sign of the saw! According to the delivery tracking system, it´s stuck in Hamburg since Monday, 13.30 hrs. To say I am annoyed and angry is an understatement!

Two trains collided head-on this morning in Bavaria, leaving 9 people dead and over 80 injured. The accident occured on a single track line, protected by numerous safety systems, which all must have failed. Both train drivers and the conductors are among the killed people.

The site of the accident is difficult to reach as the tracks are on a steep slope adjacent to a river. Survivors had to be air-lifted from the site.

Join me in prayer for the casualties and their relatives!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee for my R&GV RR Mug and a couple of those sour cream glazed donuts over there to dunk in it...  Please and thank you Ma'am.

A somewhat gloomy day outside today.  Currently 36°F under cloiudy skies.  A few flurries are expected from time to time.  It was all nice and white out there when I got up this morning.  That is pretty much all gone now as the temp will peak at 38°F later this afternoon.

I will be going to Canandaigua to feed the kitties early this afternoon, and will spend the rest of the day trying to get caught up on some things that should have gotten done a few days ago.  Will find some time to get a bit done on the area of the layout where the girder bridge will go.

Terry,  Nice layout!  Do you hold operating sessions on it?

Best get myself moving....

Good afternoon Diners. Had to blow out the driveway this morning, and it’s still coming down (why not wait? Simple safety – access for first responders whom we hope are never needed – but we’ve had one ambulance call here in the last 6 months… After lunch I’ll get back to the layout benchw*rk.  Things went well yesterday, and the glue should be rock solid now.

Henry:
Der, I haven't been around long enough to catch your name.
it’s John, but since that’s a fairly frequently occurring moniker, folks add the DER, or Der from my ID to avoid confusion. Although DER 5997 looks as if it might be a Loco number , it’s actually an old Brit phone number!

Mr. Mick: That grey wash is looking good, I’d personally go heavier towards the base of the portals, as that’s where the water drains. I think the smoke residue is outstanding. Thumbs Up

Ray:
Went over to the Fieldhouse and did 4 laps today.  I'm sure I could have kept on going for a couple more which would be a little over a mile, but decided not to push it.  What I did today was a little over 2/3rds. mile.  Tomorrow I shall try to do 5 laps, just under a mile.  Feels good to be back walking again.
– The local arena has opened up for day time walking (9-5) and a friend asked if I’d like to go – so that was yesterday. Today it’s not advisable to be on the roads – so tomorrow I’ll try again. Did get introduced to the chap who manages the arena. Turns out he retired from 1:1 Railroading after 40 years. Told him I’m in the process of setting up my model RR, and he came back with the interesting and intelligent, and unexpected reply “What Scale?” How about that – and he knew what N meant! He said he was thinking about a hobby – so who knows where this may go…

Ken: Kudos on the Credit Score!

Lion: Good to see your subway – that’s a terminal I take it. When I was a kid/teen, our local connection was the southern terminal of the Northern Line on the London Underground Look for the Underground logo and go left to the bottom of the black slanting line and that’s Morden. We lived in “Lower Morden” a penny bus fare away!

I’ll have to see if there is a mention of this on our Bavarian friends Facebook. Angel  The photos from Spiegel online really show how difficult that site is. Thanks Henry for that link.

Is Coney Island Station. In NYCT practice it is two lines arriving from the south (side of the station) and two lines arriving from the north.

On Line of LION, the two right hand tracks passes through the station to the end of the line. It is only layups that arrive at tracks 3-6. Maybe I will make 3 and 4 a short turn station.

Good Evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have an Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.

I grabbed a few b+w photos that I took back in the early 60s and will scan them at work tomorrow.  Really nothing to write home about.

i do have a slide that I took of UP GP30 831 that I took in Glendale back in the 70s, but it too is not all that great.  That's the one I want for my avatar, but I'm not sure who digitizes slides any more.  I sure can't afford to have it done at a lab.

i also have a couple that I took of the Slim Guage Guild before they dismantled the old layout in the 70s.  Those too, are slides.

Ulrich:  train wrecks are always such a tragedy.  I feel for the families involved.  I hope there are no more fatalities.

Nice pics of all the models.

Hello to all.

I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!
