On dear I was already some what down when along came that terrible man(Steve  Otte) and started everyone talking about there favourite food mouth watering stuff some sounded quite delicious some to me a Scot sounded some what strange YGW had me baffled but I digress. Why should this light hearted post from "The Grand Poobah" cause such alarm and consternation!!!!!! Well SWMBO has taken the decision that I must sorry "we" must lose weight and are therefore going on a strict diet!!! No more full Scottish breakfast to start the day we are going to eat healthy things like muesli (wood chippings) crispbread(corrugated cardboard) and cereal! So as you post about your favourite food please spare a thought for one unhappy Scotsman (no whisky either). I can only hope that my good lady wife cracks first or this could be a long miserable spring. Maybe a quick cup of tea and a few chocolate digestive biscuits before she notices!

Health and happiness to all who visit the diner!!!

With all due respect to the denizens of Northern Virginia, us down here in the Southeast corner of the Commonwealth would definately have to include pulled pork bar-b-que and ribs; served with hush puppies of course.

Good Evening,

In my neck of the woods we really don't have regional dishes but we do have several that reflect the ethnic background of the groups that settled Manitoba. Winnipeg, the capital, has a very diverse restaurant scene except for Mexican. In a city of 800,000 there are only 2 that I know of.  I suppose some French Canadian dishes could be considered as regional so tourtiere must be on the menu.

In any event I grew up in a house that never knew garlic but roast beef and yorkshire pud were frequently on the table. My father's favourite meat was lamb chops with mint sauce. I never had a real pizza until I went to university. Yes, it was very much a Brit cuisine household.

I have done a little on  the RR. I bought a new decoder for a Kato PA as I thought I had fried the NCE unit I had installed. Turns out it wasn't so as the new one doesn't work either(TCS). I tested the motor on DC and it works fine so there is a pickup issue. It is driving me crazy so I may just save my sanity and put the whole thing away. I have one PA (N scale) that does work but it suffers from intermittent stall issues so it has a pickup problem too but not as bad as the other. Sometimes I find N scale very frustrating and if I had to do it all over I would have just left it DC as I find N scale DCC fairly tempermental compared to HO.

Ray, my wife and I are back to doing our laps at the gym. I try to do 2 miles 3 times a week. I am working up to increasing that but my wife's back can't take more than 2 at a time. We do it fairly briskly and average a mile in about 12-13 minutes. I feel a lot better getting some exercise. I might even try out some of the equipment they have too but first things first.

Well soon time to watch Nature. I am recording it now as we weren't quite ready for 7.

These new TV's are great but when we watch some of the video shot on our trips the picture quality isn't so good as on the old TV. I think is is just that the picture is so much larger and the imperfections are magnified. When we went on our last trip to Africa in 2015 I changed the camera to 16:9 in anticipation of a new TV but the picture isn't very good. Perhaps the old Sony video camera is wearing out or at least its circuits are degrading.

See you soon,

CN Charlie

WhistlingDinner

Br. Otte,

When you are setting up the new menu, Please don't forget to stock some "Ensure" and some "Two Cal" and do have a heavy duty blender/extractor handy for me to dilute and blend any of these great dishes so that I can get it down my tube. I would hate to miss out on any of them.

BTW> Also include this in the new menu, it is called the Glacier Burger made by the crew at the Ice House Tavern in Emerald Park, Sk. about 11 miles east of Regina on #1 Hwy.

The Ice House's photo.

Johnboy out..    and yes I always did like Cucumber sandwiches with light mayo....

Mmmmm.  Local delicacies.

So, my daughter came home tonight with a present, but one which is totally out-of-era and out-of-region.  She got it from a friend who found it in an office building they were moving in to.

It appears to be a nice European model of a Portuguese locomotive.  I'm guessing it's DC.  It's got some minor cosmetic damage (one of those peculiarly European bumpers on one end) but it otherwise looks OK.  I'll give it a test run tomorrow.

It would be silly to put this on a shelf under my layout.  I'd rather find a good home for it where it will be run.  Ulrich?  Are you interested?  Free, and I'll pay the shipping just to know that it's going to a good home.

Hey diners,

I was thinking of different shades of gray on railroads. I named a few, SP, UP, NYC, L&N, DL&W, SBD. There's apparently more right? I was thinking about this on my walk this morning.

I read about the Germany train wreck, and I totally forgot about Ash Wednesday. Its okay it's not like we celebrate it. I make sure we don't eat any meat on Friday.

Train News: I bought an Athearn covered hopper Conrail. It will be my first product I bought from them.

Good night and many prayers to the sick and wounded.

Good Morning!

Last night saw as much ra*n as we usually have for an entire month! Thank goodness it has cleared now and we don´t live in a flood zone!

Cambus - muesli is my usual fare for breakfast for many a year now. I am allowed to eat my favorite breakfast of crisp fried bacon, scrambled eggs, sausages and buttered toast & jams only in this place Crying

Chris - that must have been "Schweinenackensteak", which is essentially a grilled slice of pork neck or pork shoulder.

Mr.B - nice loco, but unfortunately wrong gauge. My little Swiss trains run on 12mm gauge, representing metre-gauge in HO scale.

I don´t know what I´ll be up to today. I should do a little more shaping and carving on the layout, but it might be better to have a day without making a mess again ...

Have a good one.

well, cold weather is coming...single digits F for HIGHS this weekend, and lows for ambient temps are in teh negatives F. The artic bast will be felt stronger by Bro Elias in the Dakotas, though,s o i gess we should complain. All I knwo is the vehicles will be hard to start this weekend, and will have to start tehm jsut to be sure they will.

I turned up the 8' electric strip out int he 3 season room. It has a "low, med, hi" temp "thermostat" on it and doens't regualte as well as a temperature guage thermostat. SO I turned it form low-med to med, and am prepared to turn it to med hi over the weekend. I think we wiol hacve the electrician install a temp guaged thermostat on it sooner than later. That way it SHOUDL maintain a constant guaged temp. It is now a 4 season room, one we use as a cobo room/storage shed {we don't have one yet} util we get one erected. MOH wants a wood built one, bt if the town allowes it and we can still get one, we will build a platform and erect a metal one on top.

So bless all those whoface bitter cold temps KEEP WARM.

Have a good day.

I cnanot wait til tomorrow for the drs appt to find out aobut the spot on my lung. I sall be in the back booth contemplating my life......

Good morning from a VERY COLD northern NJ. Angelo, add to your list the LIRR in the 60's had their motive power and passenger cars painted in a gray color. Still love those colors and every now and then I break out my LIRR nostaglia train made up of an Alco C420 with some P72 passenger cars. Brings back great memories...

But for now, as soon as I finsh my coffee and doughnut, i am planning on goign out to cross country ski  for some exercise.  I went the other day and concluded I could use a little more exercise than I am getting just by walking around.

Later a stop by my local hobby shop to pick up some sceniking stuff, as I am just about at the point of sprinkle and glue time.

Hope all have a nice day ...

Last night an agent sent over a home inspectors Angry report on a unit we walked this week . I hate dealing with these guys they ALWAY get half of the report WRONG because they are IDIOTS and these houses are so advanced they dont have a CLUE of what they are looking AT Bang Head Bang Head Bang Head!!!!!!!!! SoapBox, So now I have to be the bad guy and tell the HO that they just wasted $800 on an idiot and that he doesnt know what he is talking about and NO WE are NOT GOING to follow his OPINIONS because he is CLUELESS and is not an engineer and is WRONG and it is not based on Codes, industry stds or certified engineering... . Geez I hate this part of my job. Grumpy Thanks guys I feel better now. Sorry. Just venting a little ( okay a lot )

 Morning Dinners

 Flo, Big Coffee Please.

Been at the dinner every day the last few days. Just did not feel like posting by the time I read all of the post.

Did not sleep well Wednesday night and by Caboose was dragging Thursday. Did get some of my running done but not all of it. Did buy a new offices chair but did not feel like bring it in the house. Guess I will get that done today.

B&O PK2 GP-30 Found out why it would not run. Seems when I cleaned the wheels using DC I some how cooked the decoder?

Well I am off, the Honey Do's are coming in quick and heavy.

Good morning, everyone!  It's a bit below freezing now, and we won't see much more melting until Tuesday, with the coldest weather of the season coming up this weekend.  It will be the muscle machines and treadmill at the gym for me for a while longer, I guess.

Galaxy, it's good to see you back.  Getting "doctored up" is never any fun, but I like to look at it as the first step on the road to recovery.  My own diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes felt like a death sentence a year ago, but the exercise program I've been on has made me feel and look better than I have in years.  It's a new experience when I sit down at my local tavern and catch ladies actually looking at me, instead of the other way around.

MrMick

Are you going to use static grass?  I started a few years ago, and I've found that it takes my scenery to another level.  I've got one of those cheap Grass-Tech applicators and it works fine.

I wired up the City Classics company houses yesterday, and I'm ready to put them on to the layout and connect them to "city power."  I'm still not sure about their exact placement, but a couple of extra holes in foamboard won't hurt anyone.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of hot oatmeal with brownsugar and a pot of dark roast coffee (Café Justo) and a seat next to the kerosine stove in the back.

Winter has finally arrived here in the Finger lakes today!  Currently 13°F (high might be 15°F) with a 20 mph wind.  The wind chill is around -7°F.  I have to drive to Canandaigua to take care of the kitties today and I bet the ICE fires before I get out of the driveway.... That should lower the 102mpg I'm getting on this tank of Dinasaur Dung.  Yesterday I drove all over Geneva using only EV.  Sun is trying to shine now and then so the white layer on everything is already dissapearing on the roads and hopefully my solar panels.

YGW, I guess the lemon juice gives a bit of tartness to it.  Without it the pie would be really sicky sweet....

I best get myself away from the computer and get busy here.  I forgot to do some laundry yesterday and will have to scounge to find clean clothes to wear today.  Catch you later!

Good early afternoon Diners!
Happy to report some more progress on the turning-doors-into –bench-work project Wednesday. The pieces cut from the 18” door are now attached to the 30” and 22” doors – the glue set up overnight. Lumber to frame up those modules is to hand, and should get put together today, all being well.  The job went more quickly than in the past partly due to a purchase I made in the summer (in case I’d be doing this very thing [whistle] It’s a gizmo which has both a drill bit and a screw driver in a single swapable unit. So, there is no need to undo the bit, replace it with the driver, and so on, and so on. Here’s what it looks like.
As a drill:
and as a driver:
Was at the Arena for a walk yesterday. Ron, the chap in charge was at the door and greeted me with “You’re John right? – You do model trains, you are starting a N Scale layout. When did you start with this?....and the conversation unfolded from there. (Yes I did get the walk in!) Today I think I’ll give him the Feb MR and see if it gets his mrr juices going.

Terry: That is an awesome layout!

Lion: Thanks for the explanation of the Coney Island station. I guess I’m used to Underground being just that – and only the terminals being “in daylight”. But, come to think of it there were stretches of some lines, even when I was a kid, that ran on the surface – but they were in strange, far off places we never travelled to – like Barnet, IIRC.  Nice effect with the photo backdrop thing Thumbs Up

Johnboy: Good looking campground – but the truck noise must be a challenge! Whistling BTW, don’t let Barry see that Glacier Burger, he’ll want a dozen!

Galaxy: Glad to see you’ve surfaced., and that it wasn’t a major medical emergency. We’re keeping you in our thoughts Angel

OzJohn: (if you don't object to the title)
Just a polite warning on the lamingtons you won't be able to stop at just one
…which is why I posted two! Here’s some more…
OOW a Tube Map havn't seen one of those for 42 years used to get from Liverpool St to Holbourn (spelling) twice a year and go to near Holloway twice a year to see late favorite Aunt who was Hospital Matron @ Holloway
– let’s see, that would be 1974 – so this map would be the one current then I think:
After my time – the one I’m used to is
That one was 1956 – so I would have been 16, not my prime Tube usage age, but the map didn’t change much for years.  All these maps and many more can to found at

Neal: Welcome  44 posts in 13 years, so taciturn or what? LaughThere has to be a story there….
C&P Restaurant Supply – Food To Die For!
Love it! I tend to name communities and landscape features for family members on my layouts – this time out I haven’t thought that far ahead.  However, Henry’s menu suggestion
If you think Maryland, you must think of crab cake sandwiches.
puts me in mind of a favourite spot of ours in Campbell River – “The Last Chance Bar and Grill” they did Crab Enchiladas – and the building may just get a mention on this new layout…

Ray: Sorry to hear about your friend Dave and his mishap – head wounds do bleed like crazy – and 5 stitches means it wasn’t “just a scratch” (unless he’s channeling Walter Mitty!)

Steven:
What else should go on the menu?
Great idea –For here, it would have to be seafood. Let’s start with Sober Island Oysters (they were our across the road neighbours when we lived on Sober Island – Google it for details); and we’d follow that with Lobster. Now we live on the Northumberland Shore we’ll go for the local (but IMHO the Eastern Shore ones are superior) But I see Mr. Beasley has claimed dibs! So, we’ll have some Seafood Chowder instead –the thick stuff which your spoon doesn’t sink into immediately. Lots more seafood than potato – and white, not the red stuff they favour around NY.  Try Ralph’s at The Fairwinds, Sheet Harbour, for instance. Galaxy’s
we have something called "spedies",cubes of chicken, pork or beef
conjures up memories of diced pan-fried Partridge in Tobermory, Ontario in the late 70s. Shot and prepared by a relative of TrolleyRob, as it turned out later…small world. Enjoy.

Ulrich:
John will likely go for Haggis, Auld Reekie Cock-a-Leekie Soup, Toad-in-the-Hole and Dornoch Dreams!
Ha Ha! – but not as much as you’d suspect. I’ll second the Haggis motion, and the Toad-in-the-hole – but only if made by my MIL, which is sadly no longer an option.  Roast Beef (and I’m talking pink inside folks) and Yorkshire pudding from the same hand also a treat.
but definitively no knuckles of pork!
How about Ham Hocks? Or are they the same as your knuckles? I’m not sure.  Handy looking saw – did you find any Static Guard – it may help calm “the look”!Generous offer by MisterBeasley, I once brought home a Shell Oil tank car on which I was not planning, only to find it gave rise to a whole new industry and its necessary spur!

herrinchoker:  Long time no see; Welcome back!

YGW:
Der - Really ? A British phone number ? I am surprised by that I thought it was a reference to teh locomative in your picture.
…thought you might! No, the Avatar is simply a file .gif from my archives – the phone number isn’t current. The DERWENT exchange may no longer exist. We’re talking over 60 years ago…
what is yorkshire pudding
Very light (if done properly) , but best smothered in gravy – cooked in cup-cake type pans in the same oven as your beef is roasting in – and the pans should have beef dripping in them for the best results.

I have done a little on  the RR. I bought a new decoder for a Kato PA as I thought I had fried the NCE unit I had installed. Turns out it wasn't so as the new one doesn't work either(TCS). As perhaps I should have, given the amount of actual running I got out of the last layout (overcomplicated) But I’m stuck with the equipment now and don’t fancy changing everything back to DC. Also, not having to bother with all those block switches has improved life….

B&O PK2 GP-30 Found out why it would not run. Seems when I cleaned the wheels using DC I some how cooked the decoder?
Maybe so – if it’s a TCS one you could return it for a replacement, no questions asked – or that was their policy. My fav decoders, and not just for that reason…

Flo, a cup-a-tea plus toast and marmalade please.

Ulrich,

Thank you for identifying the pork shoulder dish. I can now find recipes and try to cook it myself.

Yorkshire puddings should (if done correctly look more like this...

Getting them to rise to that height takes a lot of practice. Especially here in the south with so much humidity - but it can be done. I use muffin pans as they are deep and allow the batter to rise and overflow the top.

Chris.

For me the idea would be some fresh baked full grain breads, Gouda and Stilton cheeses, roasts of various types with various dry rubs and marinades, Russet popatoes, Brown and Black Rice, Salads of all sorts, and maybe, just maybe, some superhuge burgers of all sorts...including portobello ... Afternoon Diners,

I went to the JCP to get new shoes since my old ones started to tear my socks and half too place cardboard slits inside.

I just read about the Egyptian train accident crashing into a concrete barrier. Caused by negligence and conductor was arrested. A common problem over there.

Der- I wish I could count undecorated ones.

No, I wish I was that young, or at least looked that young. That is just one of their clients. I would have a hard time blending that amount to get it down the tube.
Nobody from down your way mentioned deep fried Okra.  I found that pretty good stuff when I was in Georgia a few years back.

You entered a URL to photobucket not the image address.

Here is the image address.

You can get the image address by going to your photobucket page and right click on the image and then copy image address. Then paste the image address into the <img> tag or whatever you are using.
