It's been a lot of years for me ,but I still have my electronic guitar tuner. . . Mine cost in the neighborhood of $40, I'm sure they've appreciated since.  I would expect to pay 70-75 now.

Fortunately, electronics are one thing where prices often do not go up over time. A quick check of Amazon found a number of guitar tuners for under $20, including this well-rated one from Fender.

Good late morning Diners,

mr. B:  it's been a lot of years for me ,but I still have my electronic guitar tuner.  The one I have is by Ovation.  It used a 9V battery and could tune electric (plug in), acoustic, and electric bass.  The newer ones may have digital readout, but mine is meter Readout.

My suggestion is go to Guitar Center, or Sam Ash (the east coast equivilant), or the music store of your choice and find out what options are available nowadays.  Mine cost in the neighborhood of $40, I'm sure they've appreciated since.  I would expect to pay 70-75 now.

theyre a great tool to have and you can take that stage with the assurance that you'll be in tune!  And when you're on that stage, knock 'em dead!

Less is more,...more or less!

G'mornin'.

The wife spent too much time at her session at Apple, and called me to say she'd be picking up dinner and I should do the same.  I decided to give the live-music place in Concord another try.  This time I knew the ropes.  You can't see the musicians from the bar, so I took a table front and center instead.  By the end of the evening "my" table had the singer, her two girlfriends and a couple of random guys they knew.  Very nice folk/blues performer.  One of her friends has a show there in a few weeks, and "challenged" me to pull out my guitar and get up on stage with her.  So, anybody know anything about those electronic guitar-tuning things?  I'm looking to get one.

Cloudy day, but only in the low 70s today.  I've got a hockey game tonight, so no bike ride.  I thought of taking yesterday off from exercise, but I was chatting about sports on another site and I just had to go out for a ride.

Don .... Very happy you are here again. Sad to hear about you back probem, and I hope it can heal completely. .... I can relate to that because, I once had a broken back resulting from being hit by a drunk driver. It took a year before I could work again. During recovery, I built a depot from a Fine Scale Miniature kit. ... Anyhow, best wishes to you.

Ulrich ... Thanks again for videos. ... I hope your health condition is improving with PT.

With so much rain in recent weeks in this region, the lake level here is rising.

Happy model railroading

Morning all! Mind if I join you?

Flo coffee and toast please.

Its been a longtime since I have been to the Diner...or anywhere for that matter. So I feel like a new guy again. I have been battling a terrible back issue for months now that initially left me unable to walk. But thank goodness I am slowly improving with each day and I can finally, but hesitantly, start doing some of the things that I enjoy such as model railroading.

But enough about my problems. Glad to see some familiar names still here in the Diner. Its nice to see as I have learned a lot from many frequent visitors to the Diner.

Well here's my coffee and toast. Allow me to munch and sip while I listen in to the conversation.

Happy modeling all.

Don...who is happy to be back.

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have an enormous cup of coffee with the accompanying appropriate amounts of cream, please.

Last night's meeting was productive.  We discussed the content, etc. of the new web site we are putting together.  If anyone would by any chance be interested in checking the old one out before we install he new one, the address is:

iidcpac.org        (Posted solely as a point of curiosity, not advocacy, Ok Vinnie?)

i think we have to have the new one ready and in place by September.  It would be the same address, but as I understand it, the coding will change, so things like saving to favorites won't work correctly until after the new site is installed.

i have to admit, Chicago downtown is pretty at twilight, especially down along the river.  Still enough sunlight to see building profiles and features, but dark enough that the lights are coming on. Kind of romantic.  I may want to bring MOH down here for our anniversary in very near future.  We'll see.

I hope everyone is ok and safe.

Good Morning!

Our weather seems to be back to normal. It has cooled off considerably, in fact, it is a little cold right now.

Ray - that was certainly a lot more than just a hair raising moment. You must have a quite active guardian angel! 20 years ago I went through a similar incident while barrelling down the motorway. I heard it on the radio that a car was coming down the wrong way and while I was pulling over to the right lane, I heard a tremendous bang and went unconscious. While I escaped more or less unhurt, the other driver did not make it.

Well, back to today´s tour. Let´s take a standard gauge train for a change! The place is the so called Sauschwänzlebahn, or Pigtail line. A looke at a map reveals why the line was dubbed this way:

The line was built for strategic reasons, connecting the west with the east in the southernmost part of Germany without having to cross through Switzerland at Schaffhausen.

Here is the video "Steam on the Pigtail Line"

Enjoy!

Good Evening,

A nice day here, not too hot but expecting it to get into the high '80s by Friday.

I went in for a laser treatment on one eye today to improve the drainage in the eye with the goal of reducing the pressure. It was a very easy process that, according to the research I did, is usually effective. I go back to get the pressure checked again in a month.

Garry, you are right , the U2g does look nice as it is a very nice looking loco. The prototype was built in 1942 so it has boxpok drivers, and really nice proportions without too much external piping. It also has a vanderbilt tender which I think looks better than a rectangular one.

Ulrich, nice to here that you are making progress. My father had a serious stroke when he was 60 so I do have a good idea of what you are going through. He did improve greatly afterwards with therapy and that was back in the '70s when drugs and procedures weren't as good as now. He lived to be 79.

Well hopefully the reno guy comes back tomorrow as planned in order to cut down the vanity. It is too high due to a decsion made by my wife that she wanted it high but she didn't realize the implications and really couldn't have done so, nor could any designer unless they were also an occupational or physiotherapist.

James Moon, hope your trip to Sask. goes well and that the fires aren't where you are planning to go. If it doesn't work out then you could consider coming to the next province to the east, namely Manitoba as we haven't had as serious a fire problem. In fact the area around the Manitoba/ Ontario border is right in the shield and has some really great fishing lakes. Lake of the Woods just inside Ontario is large lake with great lodges and fishing. Sorry Johnboy, if it sounds like I'm trying to poach a tourist!

Well time for bed soon,

CN Charlie

 Flo, Beer please.

I am tired to the bone. While I enjoy the extra income working 9 days in a row has me beat.

Day Off if you want to call a day at the VA Hospital a day off. Going in to have the Leg, Foot Ulcer clinic to check my wound, then blood work and a Chest X-Ray. I hope to hear some good news and no so bad news.

Good afternoon diners,  It's another raining day in SE Ohio.  Flash flood warnings until 9 PM today.  So far no hard rain or flooding.  It sure has put a damper on my outside project on closing in the bottom of the back porch, again.

Renewed my driver's license for another 4 yrs.  Also bought  my Sask. fishing license on line for the bargin price of $62 US as the Canadian price was $78 Canadian.  Exchange rate is about as favorable to US dollar as I can ever remember.  Hope to be fishing a week and a half from now.

Howmus, the dash cam vid certainly is scarry.  That's a driver's worst nightmare.  I am sure you will be glad when all your renovation effors are completed and your household is back to normal.

Time to head for the basement and spike down some more track.

Evening ladies just a Beer for me. Well the great home move has been completed and apart from a few minor jobs everything is washed, painted and put together i feel that i can now move onto the "railroad empire" but I will wait and see if "she who must be obeyed" is happy.

Galaxy I keep hoping that things will get much better for you. Candles light and prayers said keep hanging in there.

Ulrich love the videos you are setting the bar very high for those of us who hope to follow hosting the diner. keep up the good work with the PT.

JaBear if possible I would appreciate a PM explaining how to upload videos to this thread.

To everyone else regards to all.

Cudaken--Cupernol is a preservative--the paint I suggested was Woodsman Solid Latex Stain, available at Tru-Value, Lowe's, Ace, Sears---I do my house, garage, deck, railings with it--I will spray water on the surface about 1/2 hour before I spray the stain. As everything dries the stain is sucked into the wood fibers, and will cover for a very long time. herrinchoker

Howmus - I tried watching the video but couldnt get my WW2 tech."puter" to work. What is in the video

Try this instead.  On my computer even at the forum, clicking on the picture brings up the video.  I was using the IMG link at Photobucket which I guess doesn't work for everyone.  It shows another car going the wrong way on the ramp leading to the Thruway...  If we had met 100' farther up the ramp at the bridge it would have been a head-on....  I wouldn't have been able to swerve enough to miss him!

Ken - you can call me anytime between 7am and 8pm. Usually in bed by 8:30. Wednesday nights I am busy with church activities.

Howmus - I tried watching the video but couldnt get my WW2 tech."puter" to work. What is in the video > Oh when your done weeding come on over to my place ! Whistling

Ulrich - Well part of you may not work as well but your eye sight works well. Maybe you could get her to pose with a MRR and share the model with us Smile

Galaxy - OH I get GM now. Duhhhh. Out here there is this long stretch of highway and it is common place for folks to do 80 (speed limit is 70) and teh coppers do not blink an eye when you go by at that speed. I agree if someone is in teh passing lane (left ) be civil and move over so over taking traffic can pass through

Mr. B - I wish more people were like you and were more considerate of people on teh rural highways. I try to honk when approaching bikes to let them know I am approaching at 50 mph to their 15 mph.

Galaxy - it´s certainly a major change in my life. I am now confined to a somewhat secluded life, more than before. Travelling - forget it! Any delicate modelling work - forget it. I am glad I can manage little things, like having a shower, brush my teeth, getting dressed, type on the computer, walk in the house. I still need  help going up or down the stairs and that will most likely remain that way. Petra now has to bear all the burden of the household and she does it without of word of complaint from her lips.

To say my life is not thrilling anymore is today´s understatement, but what would complaining help? It is like it is.

Ulrich: sorry to hear that, like me, lately, you cannot catch a break, can you? Only you are far gettting the short end of the stick much worse than I.

Well, did a few items online shopping, basically only a few needs, as i have placed a basic moratorium on it. Spent about $200, which we can, I think manage to repay quickly enough.., all other items are suspended as I said, also spent about $100 at Wally World for household MUst haves {cat liter,TP, kleenex, etc.}

Hmm Stock market trading is suspended due to internal glitch, not a cyber attack.. I guess i won't buy any shares of anything today, HA HA {like I have money for that}

well MOH will be home soon and nap time will follow...so maybe I can catch a nap...

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a breakfast muffin with egg sausage and cheese, and a pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Raosrt coffee to keep my R&GV RR Mug filled for a while.

I have heard from the Amish store early this morning.  The delivery of the Hutches and Entertainment Center will be this Friday evening.  Also got a call from the local furniture place where I ordered the couch and chair, that they will be shipped next week and will be here for delivery sometime the week of the 20th.  Finally!

Lion, those cars do have a strange "glow" about them.... LOL  I'm enjoying your photos every day.

Ulrich, I'm also enjoying very much your steam train videos, sir!  Keep up the PT work, my friend.

I shall be spending most of today picking up and doing some cleaning of the house.  May also do some much needed weeding of the gardens.  Catch you all later!

Lion:  That's hilarious!

Why are some of the trains white or silver with blue, and some are orange?

As delivered the R-15 thru the R-30 seires were either deep red or deep green, earlier red, later green.

In the late 60's the LIRR got its first stainless M-1 cars with a wide blue belt and a blue stripe across the operator's position. The Boss of the MTA, the state owned sponsor of NYCT, MNCR, LIRR et al decreet that subway trains should follow suit.

I was not a fan of the silver and blue trains when they ran on the subway, (but I really do like them on my layout) and that was also the beginning of a period of neglict and grafitti. The cars looked like ...  When the MTA began sprucing things up again they worked with many different paints. Low Carbon Steel required lots of painting (and lots of Bondo).

They experimented with paints that they would wash the grafitti off without also washing off the paint. Once they got the formula right the sent out the "abino train." Pure ehite it was, tempting the miscreants to paint it. Every time it came out of the wash it was dasling white again. That was the end of the Silver Blue era of trains, different MTA boss, and because there was so many stainless steel cars out on the road by now, they wanted to pay homage to the original colors. The last incaration of this was the "Redbird", a red body with a black roof. And that was the way they were until they went out of service about 5 years ago. Even the new R142 cars have a touch of red on the front and red graphics on the side to give homage to the Redbirds.

That was on the IRT. The IND which also had similar, but longer cars scrapped them rather than retrofitting them with Air Conditioning. The resulting equipment would have been far to heavy for some of the structures, and probably for their own motors.

Now all of the carbon steel cars are long gone. But some are preserved by the Transit Museum, and by other holding companies, and on occasion bring them out to play. Opening day at Yankee Stadium is one good reason. It is called "The Train of Many Colors."

The lead car above is in the "World Fair Colors". These are R-36 WF cars with large picture windows and the colors were actualy baked on enamals. The R-36 ML (main line) cars were red and had sash windows. The WFs did not enjoy a long life, and when new stainless cars came onto the main line, ML cars began to replace these on the Flushing line.

Older than the R- series equipment are the Low-Vs; the High-Vs; and the Steinways. They are all indistinguishable from each other, all served on the IRT, the Low-V (voltage) was safer with 32 volts in the controller vs the High-V which had 600 volts in the motorman's controller. The Steinways were the same cars but with more motors on each car so that they could maintain uphill traction through the Steinway Tunnel which was originally designed for street cars.

The BMT had similar Old Time Cars, including "Gate Cars" -- wooden with a guard and gates on each platform. Never allowed in tunnels, least not after the disaster at Malbone street, but that was just an overpass, not a tunnel, but the disaster was spectacular nonetheless. I remember the Standards and the D types. Prior to WWII they ran some experimental including the sliverliner, the bluebird, and the green hornet. These being stainless or alumininimium were melted town for the war effort.

By  the end of the War, all of the lines came together under the board of transportation, and all cars purchased by the city--pre war R-1 thru R-9 and then R-10 and up all bore the R- designation which was nothing more than a contract number. I think that they are up to the R-210s now. Of course there were contracts for other equipment, diesel engines, electric engines, cranes, flat cars, snow blowers and a plethora of other equipments all painted yellow.

Some pax cars leaving revenue service were also painted yellow and either used as motor cars, rider cars, or even had their fore and aft ends removed and were used to transport welded rail into the tunnels.

LION is facinated with the subways of him. Him *will* have work cars that will come out at night.

Gooooood Morning!!!

Just coffee please. Not that hungry.

Wednesday already. Sunday whipped by due to the rain of week before lasts postponing our Village fireworks until this last Sunday (the 5th). For those of you that do not know, my wife is President of the “Foundation” which is an organization that does things for the Village that helps to beautify, or….entertain I suppose is a good word, the village and it’s residents. Such as the Easter egg hunt, Fall Festival and, of course, the Independence Day celebration. To pay for this they have fund raisers throughout the year and that keeps her and me (collateral damage. Inch knows what I mean about THAT), pretty busy some months. ANYwhooooo, we were kinda tied up this weekend. Now, it’s back to raining and I’m sitting here when I should be in the garage cleaning THAT disaster area up but, since I have to go in to make pizzas for the mine by noon, and well, it’s a rainy day, I’m kinda lazing out. I should be in the trainroom but alas, I doubt that’s gonna happen today.

Welp, I do have a few things I can do I suppose before I have to go fire up the ovens.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Ulrich: Hope your PT goes well today. Is your "Drill Sergeant" some one who could be a defensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys?

I have my doubts - she is a very nice looking lady in her late 20´s ...

Oh, btw - today´s PT went quite well - we cut down on the time in the "tread mill". I did too much in the past weeks.

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have my usual gigantic cup of coffee with large amounts of cream, please.

Ulrich:  Hope your PT goes well today.  Is your "Drill Sergeant" some one who could be a defensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys?

Galaxy:  Hope you can get some sleep.

Nothing exciting to report today.  Have to go downtown for a meeting later this afternoon.  I, like many of you, don't seem to be able to devote any time for MRRing lately.  I don't know that it'll get any better when winter comes back.

With the news of Allied closing (see other thread), it got me missing So Cal.  I know, some aspects of it is an armpit, but overall I really liked living there, for a variety of reasons.  But then, that was a lot of years ago.

Gotta get ready to go to work.

I hope everyone is OK and safe.

Less is more,...more or less!

Galaxy - the stroke was nor really a mild one. It left me with a body I cannot control properly. The left limbs are pretty useless for such delicate endeavors like driving. Adding to that, the meds I take clearly say no to driving.

I am not missing it. I did a lot of driving in my life, most of it for business and not for pleasure. I think I have done my share. Now it´s Petra´s turn to be the family chauffeur Smile, Wink & Grin

Ulrich: say it isn't so! Your stroke let you unable to drive anymore??? I thought you said/was under the impression your stroke was rather mild...

I don't want to/won't feel sorry for you, though! I am sure you wouldn't want pity!

But I will be concerned!

What limitaions do you still have?

later i will TRY to get more sleep, but doubt it.
