Good Afternoon,

A rainy day here in the Great White North, at least in my patch of it. The plants need though so it is welcome.

Weighmaster, sorry to hear your news but do stop in here. I must admit that I had to google your town to see where it was in Minnesota. I suspected south of Minneapolis and I see I was right. We go to Minnesota 5 or 6 times a year but stay in the far north of it, namely Thief River Falls.

Garry, saw those photos of your layout on the other forum and have to say that I think you are doing an incredible job on your layout. It really looks fantastic.

Ulrich, glad to see you back and hear that you are on the mend.

Well I think I'll head downstairs to the furnace room, aka, my workshop and finish up that second 50' PK2 boxcar. Then I might start on a couple of Red Caboose kits I picked up last year. I seem to be in a kit building mood. I have a couple of Branchline passenger car kits too that look like a challenge.

Hope everyone is fine,

CN Charlie

Good midday all. Janie, I'll have a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a root beer to wash it down. Not much happening for me, called in today at w**k, so I'm not there. Probably going to break out the paint today and see if I can actually put a coat on my two covered hoppers to get them ready for grain service on my layout. Other than that, I'm resting today.

Howdy ...

Ulrich ... Your friend, Lother, sounds like a very good person. Tell him hello from the Diner.

This weekend is the annual 400 mile yard sale along US 68 in KY. That is the main highway that passes through here. We went to town and back this morning and saw enough of the yard sales on that short trip for the year. In the pas,t we would stop, but it was nothing but used junk. Nothing we wanted.

This morning is the monthly cruise night for old vehicles. Our 31 year old Porsche qualifies, and we might participate.

With model railroading, I'm still weathing freight cars.

Happy model railroading to everyone

Good Afternoon, Folks!

Not a single post for over 11 hours? This place seems to be deserted for the day!

I am all sore and stiff from yesterday´s PT. I hope it´ll do me good - one day...

My friend Lothar came to see me and it was good to have him here and do a bit of rail talk. As I won´t be able to do any w*rk on my layout, he volunteered to get it in shape for me, so I´ll be able to run a train. He took whatever I´ve got with him and promised to return something that works by tomorrow evening. Isn´t that sweet of him? Makes me feel much better!

Galaxy - what on earth crossed your path to make you so , say, emotional? I don´t think that Brother Elias meant any harm by sharing his experience with CPAP machines, veteran hospitals et al. Zoe, get those guys whatever they like to have for a drink, it´s on me (and no, I haven´t struck paydirt...)

Have a good one, y´all!

To Vets on the site....I guess I must be the fortunate one?

I am a disabled Vietnam Vet 67 and the VA I go to since 68, which is Hines...Hines, IL. and I have never had a problem with them. Had numerous operations of sorts, six alone for reconstruction of my right shoulder, tumor surgery 1977right chest turned out to be a piece of schrapnel from 67, that somehow was missed in Okinawa. Bladder cancer surgery 1999 and a stroke in 2007. In all that time, I NEVER really could say anything bad about them. I was even a volunteer at the ECC ward for 3yrs, (extended care center) for Vets who have no one to take care of them, now there were some guy's that were in bad shape, I've watched quite a few, come and go, in those three yrs. and never heard them complain either. A great way to learn..compassion and understanding....there's a great big world out there, that many never see and some don't want to leave theirs.

I usually don't talk about my life... sorry for Your experience....but I can't agree.....not all VA's were like people claim.

I probably would not be here today....If it wasn't for the care I received.

God Bless..

Take Care! Big Smile

Wife called at 10:15 AM and said again "He is sitting in a chair and just staring into space's, what should I do?" Whistling Boy that is getting old! I sure hope he does not show up this weekend and hope to get some extra hours out of him not showing next week.

Lion While the VA has it weak points, as a whole I am pretty happy so far with my care. They fired my old CBAC PA and placed a new PA in it. I had gotten my CBAC changed before it happened and I am only seen by Dr's now.

Good evening to you all.  Finished my trenching project for the new gutter drains.  Dug over thirty feet today and can feel it tonight.  Glad I can still do fairly physical work at 72 years of age.

Ulrich, certain glad to see you back.  Good luck with your physical therapy.  Hope you are able to regain all your senses with help from therapy.

Weighmaster, sincere condolences on the loss of your wife.

Well, its time for a nice cool shower and then some chocolate ice cream and iced tea.  Hopefully tomorrow will allow a little time to work on the layout as I have worked all week on this drainage project instead of my track work.

Best wishes to all for a nice weekend.

I hrdly slept last night, just woke up every 1.5-2 hours, sometimes because the CPAP mask is old {awaiting a new one} and it leaks and causes problems then.

Eh? What are you, a veteran or something. My CPAP rig comes from a local vendor (via Medicare) and I can get a new mask every six month, just for the asking. Walk into store, pick it up, they fill out the papers and I'm good to go.

I do not use the full mask, just the nasal pillows. Wroks good, but I have issues with oepning my mouth. A soft C-collar (no provided by Medicare) corrects this issue.

Lion,

No disrespect to you. but YOUR issues with CPAP and MINE may be VASTLY different.

1} I get a new complete mask/hose/O2 receptive system each THREE months.

2} Nose pillows DO NOT stay on me in my fitfull sleep, induced by some meds I take to "function normally" {ASK MOH who SLEEPS with me, YOU DON'T, Thank the stars}. I need COMPLETE NOSE COVERAGE.

3} mY SETUP is DIFFERENT because I have OXYGEN FEED.

4} "Local vendor" SHIPS mask/hose/ O2 connector/filters primary/filters secondary to my HOME free of charge.

5} when system fails, or power goes out, I have nasal canulas to feed me precious O2 I NEED while I sleep.

ALL THIS IS WHY I HAVE CPAP. I FAIL to BREATH on my own when sleeping, and need O2 boost to be sure I am not deprived of O2.

I am glad  YOUR system works FOR YOU! BUT YOUR system is NOT ALL INCLUSIVE.

HENCE the REASON THERE ARE DIFFERENT sytems!!!!! FOR DIFFERENT PEOPLE!

Afternoon all, just got home from w**k and thought I'd stop in for a glass of sweet tea. Gotta head for our monthly trip to the grocery store this evening. Also have to go by the feed store to get more chicken feed. Not much else happening. Got informed by my wife that we have a watermelon at my FIL house that needs to be eaten, so that'll probably be my excitement for the night. Well, I'd better get going. Later taters

No disrespect to you either, for that would be the last thing from my mind.

Mostly I was picking on the VA and the terible service they give to our vets. I am a Vietnam vet, and I will not go anywhere near that outfit.

Afternoon guys

a warm one out today, might have to put the air on later to take the muggy feeling out. Not much planned other then watching f1 practise at 2. This time next week I will be at the irl race in Toronto, always a good time but it's a month earlier this year due to the pan am games in July. Might get a little layout work in tonight at some point. still haven't recovered 100% from the infection I had a couple weeks ago. I have been off work this week and have been getting energy back slowly.

i can't believe how bad a infection can make you feel, not something I want to do again.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Heritage Flakes Organic Cereal and a pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee in the R&GV RR mug please....

Sun was out for a while this morning.... cloud cover is rolling in.  Talking the possibility of thunderboomers this afternoon.  Sure would like to find time when the soil is not mud in the raised beds to till them and get the garden put in.  Yesterday I did some measuring and the stone circle raised bed I was going to put in for herbs won't fit where I wanted to put it....  Back to the drawing board I guess.  This afternoon I have to go over to my son's house and wait for the Granddaughters to get off the bus.  Tomorrow I will be out at the museum for a training session and then work train crew for a party in the afternoon.

Galaxy and Lion, I also use the "pillows" on my CPAP.  Every once in a while they will start to leak when I move my head and the head gear falls off.... LOL  While the  company that I get my supplies from has a local office here in Geneva, they don't take care of the supplies.  That has to be done via telephone.  They call me and leave a message (I don't usually pick up the phone unless I recognise who is calling), then I get to call them back.  conversation goes like this. Hello, how may I help you? Hi I am calling you back about my CPAP supplies. May I have your name, address, account #, blood type, etc?  What?  Please speak up, I am deaf and I have trouble talking on the telephone! OK, is this better? What?  Please speak up...  let me try to adjust my hearing aids....  Ok Let's try again.  Is this better?.....  And so it goes....  Unfortunately there is no other choice that I can get to work other than using the telephone for this....  I have gotten so I speak extra soft so they say What?,  then I say "Exactly!"  Life is fun! Whistling

I'm hoping that the contractor might show up this afternoon if it rains....  This is the busy time of year for most of them and since my furniture won't arrive for another 6 weeks I am not in a rush, rush situation, but....  would like to get it done.

Have a good one!

Just dropping in to say hello and report that I survived today´s PT. I went straight to bed and slept for three hours when I was back! Thank goodness I have a two day´s rest before the ordeal starts again!

I´ll be sitting quietly in the corner booth and watch who´ll be coming by...

Good evening all. Just a TBF for me. Had a very busy, and warm day today. Enjoying a quiet evening at home, kids are playing quietly after their obligatory mugging of me when I got home. Thinking of breaking out my two unpainted, undecorated, Athearn BB covered hoppers and actually painting them. I've got primer and CSX hopper tan already, just gotta actually put paint to plastic. Well, I see my float is here, so I'm going to work it.

well, I see i have some workto do and some candels to light!

I signed on late this morning and did not read any missed posts, so :

first :weighmaster, condolences for you on your wife. It is the the best thing, we had to mae the decision to turn off life support for my mother, but with no brain activity there was virtually no hope.

If i am in a situation similar, I HAVE DoNotRecussitate {DNR}} instructions for me, and MOH feels the same.

second: Then I was glad to see ULRICH, but saddened by HIS news. Good thing Petra called right away for ambulance. at least he HAS a stroke center and helicoptor in shot.. I suspected soe serious heart issue, but stroke was in the back of my mind.

so, I see several candles are needed for health hapiness, and for safe passage for those who passed on.

The candles are lit.

I have NOT been feeling to well this week, I have doen NOTHING today and baredly did a half sink of dishes only yesterday. I had a long afternoon na and was in bed by 7pm to awaken around five am, but did NOT get up then. and when I did get up, i didn't bother to post here or check email.

MOH pulled several muscles in back last weekend, and couldn't do much all week, feeling better today, and sees hte Dr tomorrow about release for work.

The extended medical epenses for MOH last year topped with increases in my medical costs are about banrupting us this year. We are cancelling the Baltimore JUly trip as we can't afford it and Baltimore wiht all the unrest and the FEds stepping on to take control of the city back, Baltimore downtown MIGHT NOT be the place to go right now, anyway.

Ithe end of june we cannot canccle our trip, bt will spend cheaply there and not buy any gifts or suevenirsof any kind.

WIht expenses looming we just cannot get ahead these last two years, when we thought we could have been. for shame. sad. really hat medical costs can be so high.cheap meals ahead as all we can afford.

well, that is my bemoaning, others have more serious issues, we must be strong for them.

SPECIAL thoughts and prayers for others..

have a good night dont expect me early tomorrow as when I do get up we have to take MOH to the Dr.

later

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please.

Weight Master So sorry to hear about you lossing your wife! Broken Heart I hope it was more of a release from a failed body than a death. Best wishes for you and your family.

Ulrich Sorry to hear about the stroke but happy you are still with us! Just don't over do it in rehap! Personally I think that is why we lost Jeffery, he was trying to hard.

My Health Front and VA Hospital Visit. Small Rant, why are American Vet's treat by Dr's from India? Why are there so many Dr's here in the US that are not natural Americans? I not aginst them if I can understand them, just find it odd.

As a whole, the visit was sort of waste of time. Good news, while my foot looks nasty, there is no infection. So I guess it was worth the trip in that respect. Waste of time part is the Dr I saw would not let me get the needed blood work or chest X-Ray while I was there. She did put in a order for new shoes. I have to see my Dr for the order for the blood work and X-Ray.

What got me some what PO'ed was when she said "the walk in clinc is for people that are sick, you should have seen your normal Dr"! I pointed out "The last time I waited to see a Dr about the foot I was in the hospital for 6 Day's, all most had part of the foot cut off, when through 21 skin grafts, had a pick line installed so I could take antibacterical drugs and was out of work for 3 months"! She changed her tune real fast and said she was glad I came in. Whistling

 BBQ is done. Dinner

Ulrich ... We've been worried about you. I'm very sad to learn of your bad news. If you don't mind, please set up a line of communication with Galaxy our someone else to inform us if you have a major problem again. Meanwhile, I'll pray thanks your life was saved and pray for a full recovry. It is very good to know you ar a patient at a university hospital becaue I think those are better hospitals. We care about you.

Inch ... I use brass wire of 0.015" diameter for grab irons. Stirrup steps are commerically available if you prefer to get them. I have one boxcar where I made stirrup steps of wire but it was thicker than the grab irons wire.

JohnBoy .... You might like to know there is a model train guy living in Montana who participates in another forum. I think he is not too far from Billings.

Frank ... I did not know you had that stroke. I had my helicopter ride for a heart problem a year later than your stroke (2008).

Weighmaster

As some of you may know, my wife Kathy has dealt for years with a number of health issues, and has been homebound and mostly bedbound for the last seven.  Sunday afternoon she had great difficulty breathing, and was transported to our local hospital, less than two miles away.  She suffered cardiac arrest on the way, but was brought back by one of the paramedics.  Another episode occurred in the ER, with 15 minutes of CPR being done.

A couple hours later she was sent to Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Miineapolis and put into cool down for 24 hours to preserve brain and organ function.  We learned after the rewarming of her body that her brain function had become severely limited, and that her best hope was to remain in a vegatative state, which she did not want.

Life support was removed yesterday around 12:30 pm, and she left to join her Lord at 3:00.

Gary

That was a tough decission, even when it is the obvious decission. Our Prayers for you.

Ulrich,

Glad to hear from You.....I had a hunch, that It was something like that and I'm glad You made it....time is of the essense, in those situations for any recovery...had You waited longer to go, things would have been worse....I know..I had a stroke in 2007 and that is what I was told....It still took me almost three yrs. to recover and still have to watch what I do. It affected my balance, I had none....It was like learning how to walk and do things again, still cannot make any sudden movements....or I will fall. I was 66 when it happened. A lot of PT. God Bless and Never Give Up.

Gary,

I don't know You well, but sorry to hear of Your loss.

God keep You and Your's.

Take Care All! Big Smile

Hi Gang,

Chloe, double root beer floats all around to celebtate Ulrich's return.

Ulrich, we are so glad to hear from you, saddened about your condition and your time away from home and Petra.  Just a little advise to you good Buddy,  when the Cancer hit me, I made up my mind that I was not sick,  I just had a problem that I had to over come.  I believe that mind set has really helped me in dealing with all that I have had to and to adjust to things that have changed that I can't control..  Just a suggestion, but give it a try as it will help you out with the recuperation process..

Gary,  Our sincere condolences. That would be a very difficult decsion to make, but I do believe it is the best under those circumstaces. You and your family members are in our prayers.

Bama, So glad you checked in, I have been wondering alot lately about our MIAs in the Diner. Glad the Kiddiles are doing good and hope you are in good health and spirits. Good luck with your new business plan.

I have the tree guys here today, topping a couple of Blue Spruce, taking out an ill Green Ash, and trimming up a large Maple.  So lots of noise and mess around here but they will clean it all up.

I hear them starting again after lunch, so will check out for now to go and watch.

Later, Gators.......

Good to see you again, Ulrich!  May your recovery be swift and smooth.

I'll be visiting my daughter in Maine for a couple of days, but I plan to return over the weekend at some point.  If it's Saturday evening, I'll be watching the Stanley Cup so don't look for me then.

Right now, it's still chilly out but I'm going to bundle up and take a bike ride.  In my younger days, I used to prefer to ride when it was like this, just about 60 degrees F, but now I like it a bit warmer.

Good Afternoon!

I was released from the hospital today.

On May 15th, I was unable to get up in the morning, just could not move an inch. My speech was garbled, so Petra called the ambulance. Well, the ambulance did not come, but a helicopter, which took me directly to the stroke unit at the University of Hamburg hospital. The stroke must have happened right before I tried to get up, so there were less than 20 minutes until the treatment began.

This has probably saved my life.

I am still suffering from the effects of the stroke. My left side is more or less useless, walking without any help does not work. I am quite positive though that I will regain control to a degree, which allows me to lead a close to normal life.

For the moment I am just glad to be home again!

Petra´s aunt (the one in the nearby nursing home) passed away last week. She had been suffering from MS the past 40 years and her condition was critical since April. As much as we are saddened by the loss, we feel that it was a blessing for her to go. The memorial service will be held next week, but I am afraid I won´t be able to attend.

Gary - Petra and I are sad about your wife´s passing. Please accept our sincere condolences!

I will try to come here as often as possible. My days are filled with PT to get back to normal. I have to go there every day except the weekends. Walking down the one flight of stairs from our apartment takes 10 minutes, the walk to the parking lot another 10 minutes. I guess I´ll be beat when I am back from the PT.

Blessings to all of you!
