Thought I would get in early.
We got a big rainstorm last night ( first rain in almost two weeks ). I have a long shift today ( 9am-7:30 ) so not looking forward to that. I might get out and statr shooting some hockey pucks when I get some free time. I always enjoying doing that. I have to give my hockey net a frsh coat of paint as its pretty faded and orange looking.
Well, time to grab something to eat and get ready fro what is going to be a long,long day.

Who has plans for model railroading activity in September? ... I know Ray is working on a very nice bridge scene. I bet some of you others have a little project just waiting for attention. Perhaps now is the time to put together a kit you have stashed away with other stuff. ... In my case, I hope to get back to working on my big layout extension after my trip. After today, I will have little or no time to visit the Forum until middle of next week

Yeah, Garry, I've got plans, but then again, so does my wife. So, we'll see how much gets done. I'm adding Phase 3 to my layout, which will be mostly staging. I've got the benchwork up and the bus wires run, and most of the foam cut and in place. Over the weekend I did some more work on the liftoff bridge that will span the aisle, and I even ran a train over it:

Fairly nice day here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS at the moment. That will likely change this afternoon. Currently 80°F outside with a high of 82° later when the thunderboomers show up...
Glad some of you liked the old H12-44 videos. She is in service but doesn't get used on Sundays much. She is spitting oil out her stack. Needs to be taken out on the mainline and hooked to a heavy train where she can be opened up to notch 8 for a while. The rings are not sealing correctly after sitting for long periods of time and then only run just off idle to pull a couple cabooses. She is an interesting specimen and puts on a good show when we do run her. The video closing last month's diner was last year when she did see a couple weeks of service before she started spitting oil again. BTW, you couldn't see me, but I was riding in the Erie caboose when the video was taken....
Need to do some shopping today, but I hope to get more done on the bridge scene....

Good morning. It's 82° with 85% humidity. Maybe I won't get soaked from just going outside. The high will be 90°. Cloudy with a fair chance of thunderstorms. with Didn't have any problems with the pizza yesterday. So far problem foods are smoked sausage, beans, olives.Looks like I need to get a new mouse. Mine is double clicking and cross clicking. The gas tank select switch on the truck broke yesterday. broke right out of it's mount. Right now I have it temporarily secured in place. I think I should get some epoxy and glue it back where it belongs then put a small bag of expanding foam behind it to keep it pressed into it's place. Got some bills to pay today and the grocery shopping needs to be done. I also need a new tip for my cane.
Well I've gotten quite a bit done so far today. Picked up some stuff I needed at Wal-Mart including a new USB optical mouse and a stick of moldable epoxy. Kneaded that up and packed it in around the tank select switch in the truck. When it dries it'll be hard as a rock! Right now it's light blue in color but later I can use a black permanent marker to color it black like the trucks dash. Gonna hold off on the grocery shopping til tomorrow. I'll have my SNAP money then (gee, a whole $32). I'll go by the loan office and pay make my payment there too. Other things done today are I got a new tip for my cane, got my meds refilled. Went by bank and let them know in no uncertain terms that their ATM's were NOT working yesterday, a totally unsatisfactory situation. One always displayed that it was down for maintenance and the other one didn't work at all. It wouldn't even recognize my cards. I should've told them I should bill them for the inconvenience.
Afternoon all, not much going on here, except for a good storm outside. I do have some projects lined up for Model railroading including the Wheeling business car-hopefully starting it this moth, after I get my car inspected.

Was Off Today! I sure needed it after this weekend! Felt sort of OK this morning, dropped by to see in the the dinner had been moved or not. Had nothing to say at that point and looked around on U Tube. Personally I like U Tube better than TV.
Took Sue and Sparkie The Rocket Dog to the park today. Sue kept saying "Sparkie had not got to done anything fun for a long time"! Sparkie's idea of fun is smelling another dog's poop! So what Sue was really saying is She wanted to go to the park! So off we went, and Sparkie / Sue enjoyed them selfs.

Need a new track plan. I need to get the Road Runner back in the garage for this winter. So that means the old layout needs to go away. I was going to ask Ulrich for some help but till he comes back I need to wing it.
I have a idea in my head that I like, but have a question about spacing in turns. I want 3 main lines run beside each other. Smallest radius I plan on is 22 inch on the inside, then 24" and 26" turns. How far apart do the tracks need to be from each other? I run larger cars, short passengers cars and big engines inc the Y6b and UP Big Boy.

Very tired tonight... Don't know why. Guess I still need to catch up on some sleep. Did some shopping today, washed the sheets on the bed (Manét left me a bit of a hairball there), and spent some quality time in the trainroom. Got more done on the girder bridge overpass:
Have the approach done on the right hand side. Will start to lay the track as soon as the other side of it is finished enough to get it done.
Also spent some time painting the rail in Kanandaqua Yard. You can see which tracks have been done pretty easily. After I get the rails painted, I will start on ballasting and detailing the yard. Still have have several yard tracks and the "Hill Block" to the overpass to finish.

As I said, I have a trip coming up. I leave tomorrow morning for MI going through OH... There is much going on in a few days as I said before. ... Tomorrow is my 70th b'day.... I spend it driving 600 miles.. B'day will be celebrated over the coming weekend... I will have hardly any time if any for being on the computer for several days.

Got the new mouse plugged in and working. A huge improvement over the old one. I also got a PS2 to USB adapter to use on a keyboard I had stored in the closet. I didn't know if the keyboard worked or not. It doesn't so it's going out in the trash tomorrow. A real shame too because it's a really nice keyboard. Got my new SNAP card today so I called the local office and set my PIN number on it. I also made a black and white label of the card number and applied it to the front of the card. Why would I do that? Being color blind could have something to do with it. The card has a lot blue shades on it. Checked my staples today and found a couple of the sites were weeping. So I very carefully clipped those staples and removed them. One was already loose on one end so clipping it wasn't required. Got me pill caddy all loaded up for the week ahead. I have some empties to call in to the docs office for refills. The repair to the tank select switch in the truck is holding very well. It's much more secure than it was with my nephews 'let's not try too hard' drywall screw repair that he'd used previously. I thought about using that but it's too much like putting a band-aid on a broken leg. Hence the use of the use of the epoxy stick. It seemed today like he was gonna pop off with something about the extensive use I'm making of the truck and I was so ready to bury him with the maintenance and gas receipts and tell him when he's paying for all of that he can tell me how to use it. Until then, sit on it! He very wisely decided to keep his mouth shut.That's it for today. See y'all tomorrow.

Back home again - after spending two days in our hospital for a thorough check-up of all systems. In those two days, I was subjected to just about any of those diagnosis systems they have, starting out with the "tube", 24h ECG, looking inside my stomach (yuck!), sonar - you name it. Results? Nothing! The symptoms are quite clear, but what´s causing them is yet unknown. I don´t know whether I should be happy or not. I´d rather know what´s wrong and what can be done, so I´ll start to feel better.
Ray - thanks for moving the diner to the September location!

Ken - let me know how much space you will be able to dedicate to your new layout. Think about that triple-track main line. Sounds like an overkill to me, if you also want to have some "serious" operations, i.e. industries to serve, a yard etc. Just give me some input and I will fire up my old CAD program...
When you are in a hospital, most of the time you spend waiting for something to happen. I made use of that time to think about my layout plans (and dreams). As much as I want to have continous running of my trains - it ain´t going to happen, unless I go down to Z scale (which I won´t). So it´s either a shelf switcher or nothing. The idea I had putting the layout on sliders and insert boards on the back and sides is not feasable - the benchwork will be way too complicated to build, aside from the cost of it.
I am at the edge of giving up.

Good morning. It's 70° with 100% humidity. The high will be 92°, cloudy with a slight chance of thunderstorms. with Just checked my SNAP account balance. $37 and change. That's almost a bad joke. Not a lot but it's enough. Some people call it welfare. Down here it's called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. I get SSI so they cut the SNAP way back! Now for things I need. I have four packs of chimichangas in the freezer and part of a thawed pack in the fridge. So, don't need any of those. They are $3 and change per pack so my usual three packs would be close to $11. Money that can be used to get something else. I can tolerate chili (no beans) so I'll get some of that. Sandwich meat, cheese and some lettuce would be good too. Also need mustard. No olives! Olives are a definite no-no for me as are beans. Haven't tested rice yet. That'll come soon. I have no problem whatsoever with popcorn and pizza. Chocolate (Kit-Kat) passed the test yesterday as did Dr Pepper. Coco-Cola is good too as is tea. Sooner or later tomatoes are going to need to be tested. In recent years they've served as a good laxative. I was told it was because of my gall bladder trouble. I hope that's true because I really like tomatoes. I don't know yet how I'll do with bread. That'll be today. Can't be any worse than the result of olives. I hope!time to get out to Wal-Mart and do the shopping. Early morning so it'll be cool and there won't be many people there. Should be easy to get a handicap space close to the store.

Last night at the train club went fairly well. The re-motored Kato F40PH runs really well, but was a bit tricky to speed-match to my other one. But then I'm finding I'm not the only ones who has had kato motors die on them... Mine was only a year and a half or so old... But then some other members have had some that have been running since the 80s...
I would say a bit more, but I have to get ready for work...

This is the 2nd one I've had go bad on me. I probably could have fixed it had the brushes not been stuck so bad. It needed a cleaning, but there was no way to get to to the commutator. The flywheel on the commutator was stuck on too. When I tried to get the flywheel off the windings actually tore. The first one had on of the wires to the commutator break, but that one was over 20 years old...
It's kind of weird with them. When they work, they work really well. But for some reason, they either last a long time or not very long.

*Door blows open with a chilling Fall breeze chasing* Morning Folks.. Fall is here! .. and so am I. After reading Todd's posting.. I thought how wonderful.. so am I .. getting back to working on the layout. Work yes.. back breaking working.. leaning and twisting to reach all those had to get to places.
Of all thing I shall be working on is .. The Train Yard. Years ago.. when .. before all this 'work' started.. well, all I wanted was a 'Fiddle Yard' something small. Hardly the case now.. and now progress is starting on the actual Train Yard. Slowly gathered and bought all the swithches for a Train Yard. Funny thing is.. all those things.. idea's of what you need (water tower, ash, engine house.. Arrival/departure.. Yard lead.. well all those things now are coming into play.
With a little luck.. I will take time-out for a drawing.. and maybe even a pic.. I might give you an idea of what the heck is going on. Besides that.. it might help me understanding all this of what I want and how to accomplish it. Today.. writing in this forum .. shall be my inspiration... and continued efforts. Todd.. you're on.. I played with my trains today. Actually, I soldered two wires to the length of HOn3 tracks I have and ran my D&RGW T-12 brass gem over it. That test track has a length of a whopping 15", so the travel was, to say the best, somewhat limited. I enjoyed it anyway!
