Without the intention to dig deep into politics, but the current ongoings scare the heck out of me. It may be just old age, but I have a feeling that we are at the verge of something bid and nasty.

Staying away form a political issue, and focusing on the age part:

I think as we age we get more cynical and "distressed" with age..as we age, we have seen a lot of things come and go that have had an effect on us, we have seen/heard/lived the past through those two generations who went on before us whom taught us to be what we are now{paretnts grandparents}, and somehow age makes things less stable to us.

We are no longer the young bucks "taking the world by the tail" who "thinks we have all the answers"{and didn't} and now that we have some of the answers, it is frightening what we have learned!

This may not be true for all, but jsut like the fact that time seems to  fly as we age {where has the summer gone/going already?} so do things that cause us consternation{like poverty, who is going to take care of us in older age, what will life be like as we decline in our abilitites and maybe wars}

I can say, as we all can, I wish I knew at 22 what I know now and LISTENED to my older self, I thought knew things and had the world by the tail. DO 22 y/os listen to our imparted wisdom? probably NOT, but they will only learn what we know by Living it.

Aging scares me on so many levels: {who will take care of me when old and frail, where will money for bills come from, etc} but I try NOT to let it worry me...just for today.

So, Just for today, Ulrich, enjoy it as a great day.

That´s why I like w*rking on my layout - Keg Harbor is a serene place, where it is always Friday, Aug. 21st, 1931. Babe Ruth just blasted his 600th home run, New York saw a street battle with gangsters, in which 4 people got killed, but other than that, it was a quiet day...

Good Morning Diners,

Ulrich,

I understand Your plight my friend. After being married twice and divorced the same amount, mainly because I was gone alot....but what could I do? The money was always there, but I had to give up my home life to have it. Would have been married 51 yrs this month. All turned out well in the end. My two ex-wifes still contact me and ask my opinion on certain issues and one is remarried. Three Son's, one Daughter and eight Grand kids, keep me hopping some times, but I actually have, no regrets. My kids probally would not be in the shape they are in, if I could not afford their education and housing. They understand that better now that they have their own families.

Good Morning Gang!

Flo, a mug load of dark roast and a cinnamon roll, please!

30 years of marriage! Where have all those years gone? My son is just about in the same age as I got married, my Dad was as old as I am now. He is gone for over a year now.

Please excuse me, but I am a little bit sentimental today. 30 years is quite a long time and most marriages don´t make it that long over here. Those years have not been easy for us. Most of the time, my job got in the way of the life and the dreams we had. For years, we had one of those "weekend marriages", as my job took me away from home. How I hated that - especially when Christian was a little child. Last plane in on Fridays, and last plane out on Sundays. Only on rare occasions I was able to take the first flight out on Mondays. I remember times I woke up in a hotel room, not knowing where I was - still in London, or already in Paris? In those years, I tried to make up on the family life during weekends, but two days are not enough. Many  a time my son cried when I left on Sundays. This literally broke my heart - one fine day I woke up in a hospital instead of a hotel room. I was 34 when I had my first heart attack.

Now Petra and I have all the time of the world. We enjoy being together. Of course, there is a little fussing and fighting, but nothing serious. It is just too bad, that we don´t have the life we had dreamt of for the age we are now in.

Blessings to you, my friends!

Good evening. It's a warm evening here. 81° out there and very humid. It's most clear with a good view of the sky. Too bad I don't have a telescope.

Finally got the chance to go to the bank today to deposit the donations I've received to change out the engine in my van. It's looking like that's going to be a reality. Got back from town and a couple hours later my father calls to invite me to dinner. Of course the van is vapor locked and won't start. So I call him back and tell him that and he comes to pick me up. Dinner was a nice affair of home fried hamburgers, his own recipe and quite good. After dinner we watched Wheel of Fortune. Afterward he took me back home where I tried starting the van again just to see if it would. Pressed the starter button and the battery connection went away. Brought out the tools and my Dremel rotary tool with steel wire brush attachment, removed both clamps, cleaned the posts and clamps then tore the clamps down and cleaned the cable ends, put it all back together and tried it again. Fired up no problem. Of course it'd been sitting for almost five hours so why shouldn't it. Other than that not much happened here today.

It's time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Hi Garry ! Have you spoken to UP Mike lately ?

YGW .... No, and my feelings about what happened have not changed. He's a good guy. I did not like what happened. Enough said.

Ulrich ... Congratulations on your anniversary. You are blessed with a great wife. Have a fun day with her. Your model rairlaod can wait for Petra. One of the benefits of our hobby is it can be set aside. It will be there when we return.

Ray ... Enjoy the NMRA picnic. I bet your salad is a good one.

Ken:

Years ago I wen t to the hospital for the sleep study. One night for them to "base line me" to get a reading on how I sleep {or did not}. They found I "wake up" and on average of, and miss sleep for 38 minutes out of every hour! I also stop breathing for as long as nearly 2 minutes! {I can't even hold my breath for more than about 30 seconds}. The second night was to "fit me" and determine what setting for the CPAP I needed.

DO it!

And when you get the  CPAP, Like Ray siad, it will take some getting used to, I described it as being like sticking your head out of a a fast moving car and trying to breathe, but you WILL get used to it, Now, I can't sleep without it, and If I start to fall asleep on the couch in the LR, I will startle awake as my own snoring will wake me now!

SO do the study, take the tiem to get used to it, and soon it will be "old hat"!

Evenin' folks,

Janie a refill for my decaf would be great...

Ken, it is CPAP (all capitals).  Stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure.  I would guess that if you got kicked out of your bed by the SWMBO for making the chainsaw noises, you most probably have Sleep Apnea.  I spent many years in denial and finally a year ago mentioned not sleeping well and being woken up by chainsaw noises going on and that my cats kept waking me up cause they couldn't sleep, the Physicians Asst. at the allergy place, scheduled me for exactly what you will be having.  I have moderate sleep apnea and have found I sleep so, so much better now with the CPAP.  Takes a little getting used to, but what a difference!  Would hate to not have it....

I have to get back to making a Potato Salad for the picnic tomorrow...  later!

 Eveing Dinners!

 Flo, Beer Pleases

Pretty much a wasted day, felt fine but just to sleepy to do much.

Health Front VA has finally ordered a sleep study for me! Yes It will be done at my house. The company that is suppyling the equment to show me how to use it. Man I hope I have Sleep Apnea, that way I can get the C Pap (spell check) machine and get off the Caboosing Couch!

Ulrich And Petria Gift Happy Aniversry and hope this is the best year yet!

Train Front Broke out the cheap Bachmann GP 30 that came with a cheap decoder. Over all, one of the best cheap engines I have. I think I paid $30.00 for it from K-10 Model Trains 2 years ago. If the decoder had BMF Feedback I would rate it as a 7. Took some playing with the CV but it now has a fair slow speed.

Later, Ken

well, had the computer re-cleaned, re-fixed and now maybe it wil work.

THe cleaner this time brought up the denials to accesss to the net I was getting and went in search of why{instead of saying its the modem and cable company's fault}, and found a couple of viruses- one masqurading as "Cozi's Family Calendar" {supposedly a desktop calendar}which we never used and its has been on there since shortly after we got it as we never touched it. No one else who cleaned the computer found it and it had a link right there on the desktop!!! Of course after certain hours they are in India, hard to udnerstand and often, I don't think they know what tehy are doing. Today I got AMERICAN guys to help.

One indian guy told me my problem was with WIN XP..I DON'T HAVE win XP, we have WIn 7!!! DUH!

well, I see its a been a so-so day in the diner.

Mornin' folks!

Zoe, Just need a refill for my dark roast coffee at the moment.

Should be a pleasent day here in the Finger Lakes.  Currently 71°F with a high around 78°F later this afternoon.

I will be spending the day getting ready for the NNRA Picnic tomorrow.  Have to go shopping for the drinks (water and soda) that the Division is supplying.  Then get out some membership forms, etc to take with me.  I decided I will take the Inglenook puzzle even though there are only a few of us attending the picnic.  If I can find a place to set it up under cover, I will let any visiter to the Live Steamers try it as an advertisement for the Division.  Does mean that one of us will need to hang around where the puzzle is set up all day...

Garry, I truly enjoy my time out at the museum (if you haven't already figured that out...).  I tell people most every week I learn something about railroads I didn't know before.  many of those little facts have been applied to my model railroading as well.

Catch you all later!

Jeff ... Your photos have an interesting group of old HO locomotves. In particular, I see the old B&O GP9 shell on an old Hobbytown drive. The brass 2-6-0 looks like a nice ngine.

The brass 2-6-0 is a Japanese Olympia. It had a dead motor. I sold it off years ago.

Ray .... I think it is very good of you to vlunteer your time at the railroad museum. It must be a very good educational experience for kids who visit. ... Also, it is nice you ca nspend time with local NMRA events. I ay that because NMRA has me in Central Indiana Dvision. They meet mostly in Indianaplis over 300 miles from here. I don't go.

YGW ... Good to be curious, and I'm sure Ulrich is glad to talk about his choice of scales.

edit ... Ulrich. I was correct. You like talking about your choice of scales. Cheers.

Good Afternoon!

It has a cooled off a little, but not enough to make me feel better. I am still in the doldrums.

Jeff - glad to see you are home! I hope you have sufficient support there to get by.

yougottawanta
Ulrich - Hope you didnt take my comment as a critical comment.

YGW - no harm done! Actually On30 is the ideal scale/gauge for me. I can do a lot of scratchbuilding, as things are big enough for my bad eyes and trembling hands, yet track, locos and rolling stock do not require much more space than HO "trains". Aside from that, I am a narrow gauge buff for decades now.

Not much MRRing in the next days. Tomorrow, Petra and I will be entering our 31st year of marriage, and I have promised her to spend the day away from my trains. We won´t have much of a celebration, but I will get her a nice bouquet of flowers (from my MRRing funds) and take her out for dinner. There is a new Greek restaurant we may give a try.

Have a good one!

How do I handle what exactly?

Good morning. It's 74° with 90% humidity. The high will be 95° and somewhat cloudy.

Just waiting for the Home Health nurse to call. The wound vac needs to be reattached so it can continue it's work. Nothing else is planned. However there's no telling what may come up.

Ulrich - Hope you didnt take my comment as a critical comment. Just a personnel observation and something I dont really understand. I am a curious by nature and always trying to understand other points of view. Learn some amazing things that way. Thank you for sharing your thought on the your scale.

Jeremy - I mentioned your headaches to my GF and she commented that sometimes people develop headaches because of being dehydrated. Lot of causes for this. To much coke/coffees , not drinking enough water, sweting etc...Are you drinking four or five glasses a day ? If not you may want to consider that.

Welcome home Jeffrey! Have they put you on any restrictions for the moment?

No more than before.

*

Today's lunch meal, my last at the hospital, was really good. A roast beef sandwich, hamburger steak, potatoes, corn, some fruit, skim milk and iced tea.

Nothing much going on here. I went down to my fathers place to sort through my mail, picked up a jar of peanut butter filled pretzels my step mother gave me, petted the cat a bit just to be sure that she's thoroughly spoiled then came back home.  Since then I've been getting settled back in.

While in the hospital the doctor and nurses kept inquiring as to why I didn't need any pain medicine. Other people who had the kind of surgery I had were in agony and begging for pain medicine. I told them that I'm not those other people or rather those other people didn't have near the amount of nerve damage that I do. I could drop a brick on my foot and not feel it. That of course is the crux of my infection problem. Because I can't feel the pain an infection would cause it can spread unnoticed. For that reason I'll have to be more vigilant.

Well, nothing further to report tonight. It's time I called it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin' folks!

Welcome home Jeffrey!  Have they put you on any restrictions for the moment?

The tour group out at the museum turned out to be a Day Care Center.  The kids were mostly 5 and 6 years old.  The first group that came on track cars was just starting our little tour standing behind the Depot when a 5 chime sounded off the "long, long short long" for the grade crossing next to the museum.  It was the Southbound LA&L train with about a dozen tank cars full of high fructose corn syrup bound for the Cool Whip plant in the Southern Tier.  When it had passed, I looked at the kids and the adults with them and said, "That was sweet!".  Then mentioned what was in the tank cars, and got a good laugh from both some of the kids and the adults...  They learned a little about train orders, what an old station office looked like and what went on there, and then got a tour of the refrigerator car...  The second group didn't get to see a frieght train doing 40 mph up close and personal! Whistling

Got home by 4PM, mowed the rest of the lawn, had supper (leftovers and fresh sweet corn), did the string trimming around the property, and then headed down cellar to dig out my old Inglenook style timesaver which I will be taking to the picnic (NMRA Division) this Saturday.

Tomorrow I have to do some shopping, make a potato salad for the picnic, and then get everything packed and loaded in the PiP.

Close to calling iot a night!  Lots to get done tomorrow...

I assume it will be better for him to be home, but if that wound will give him as much trouble as the other with the wound vac [thouhg larger} It may be bad for him to be home.

The doc said it shouldn't be a problem as the wound is very small. They were able to nip off the toe without taking a hunk of the foot with it.

*

Finally made it back. That was the longest cab ride I've ever had! Glad the hospital was paying for it. It was fifty-seven miles. It feels good to be back home.
