Howdy .... Been a bit busy lately. Good to see all of your posts here. The Diner is off to a good start in April.

Bakzzin (Keith) ... Good to see you here. Feel free to tell us how you are doing.

Duke .... You too! ... It's been a while since you have posted. Tell us how you are doing if you want.

Regarding Jeffrey .....  I called his Dad this evening. Jeff is in a rehab hospital for an indefinate stay. His Dad gave me Jeff's number.. ... Jeff can take a few calls from some of you. PM me or email me if you wish to call Jeff. He will not be able to post in forums or send emails while he is in the rehab hospital. .... The surgery of about ten days ago went okay. Part of his foot was removed along with the infected toe. He had both a staph infection and gangrene. His wound is roughly 1 1/2" by 2 1/4" and is healing very slowly. ... Jeff is in very good spirits, and he sincerely appreciates all of the forum members who care about him. I admire Jeff's good attitude and strong character. I will post this message in at least 2 other forums in which Jeff is a regular. ... Feel free to post in other forums you are aware that Jeff participates with this news.

Evenin' folks!

Janie....  Huh?  Yep, Decaf for me!  Thanks!

Been a good day here in the Finger Lakes.  Morning Sunshine turned into a hazy cloudyness but still with some brightness around.  Got all the way up to 42°F and will actually stay above freezing overnight....  Little by little it is acting a bit more like Spring around here.

I went over to Lowes to buy a new "Bathroom Scale" for my bedroom.  This has been a couple weeks of everything getting to that magical age where the little timer inside goes off and the electronics fail.  A couple days ago I decided to see what my weight was and put my foot on the scale and took it back off to check it.  It came up to "0" like it is supposed to do, so I got on the scale and nothing happened....  Figured the 9v battery was dead.  Went and got a new one that was outdated by a couple years....  That didn't work, so yesterday I bought a couple brand new 9v batteries and put one of them in it.  Nothing!  Hence todays run to Lowes for a new one.  About two weeks ago I went to use my food processor and the drive shaft stripped all the edges on it.  I was cutting up some roast beef to make hot roast beef sandwiches.  So That was kaput.  Then 3 days ago I made coffee and it seemed to drip just fine.  Coffee was good but not really as hot as usual by the time I had my second cup.  Yet it burned out and is kaput too.  I am waiting on Amazon.con for those replacements as nobody in town has what I want (except a couple stores I do not shop at).  Anyway, after Lowes I got my Allergy shot and came home.  Spent some quality time in the train rooms (after starting the siphon to lower the water level in the workshop....)

The Blacksmith Shop Project is close to being finished!  At this point it needs mostly details, junk around the building, a picnic table with people under the Chestnut Tree (in left foreground), and switch stands on each of the switches (turnouts).  A lot of the hillside is shown to have been recently logged out.  The first batch of the stumps tunred out perfect after I stained them with diluted India Ink.  For the second batch I added more alcohol to the mix, shook it up, and ended up with very blue coloered stump ends!  I have to fix them somehow.  I will probably use a brown stain to see if I can correct them.  Anyway the area now looks more like it should:

Galaxy, sounds like you had an interesting day.  I have the "Yellow Dot" materials here someplace waiting to get filled out and put in the freezer and in the glove compartment in the PiP.  Need to get that done soon!

Garry, thanks for the update on Jeff!  I have been wondering how he was doing.  Looks like he will be doing some major rehab on this.  I fiogured he should have stayed at the emergency room when his doctor sent him over!!!  I am glad he is healing up even if it is slow.  Could have been a lot worse.  Please let him know he is in my thoughts and prayers!

Hope all of you have a good night!

Garry=Thanks for the update By all means include my best wishes and Prayers for Jeff.

Did to much yesterday . Climbed a ladder to trim tree branches rubbing the roof. Today was spent eating and sleeping.. It was a beautiful day. Temp got up to mid 80's. Same for tomorrow and maybe hit 90 on Sunday.

Ray- Glad you liked the post.     Not artistic myself, I really enjoy the postings of those of you who share their models. There are too many to name.

Time to hit my pillow.  Prayers for all

Good Morning!

It´s finally raining over here! Never thought I´d welcome that wet stuff falling from the sky, but it has been definitively too dry in my neck of the woods! Mother Nature is certainly welcoming a drink!

Keith - great to see you are back. I was so indulged in my translation job I missed your post. Hope to see you more often, Sir!

J.R. - the difficcult part of that translation is to understand those many technical and medical terms which you don´t find in an ordinary dictionary. Add to that the company´s own word creations and usual marketing talk, which are impossible to translate. The good part is, that this time I have to translate English into German, which I find a lot easier than the other way around. I hope to have both the data sheet and the manual done by today. I´ll let it rest for a day or two and then revisit the job I have done to streamline it.

Garry - thanks for the update on Jeff! Makes me feel sad, to read that he has lost more of his remaining foot than just a toe. Life will turn even more challenging for him. I wish I knew how we could provide him with some more comfort and reliable help!

Ray - that scene is just awesome! Bow

Are you ready for another railfanning trip? Today, we will be visiting Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (Hamburg Central Station), about 35 miles away from my place. No, we won´t be taking the car into town, as parking your car is more expensive than the train ticket. It´s a ten minute walk to the train station from my place, we should be able to do that. The train we will be taking is a push-pull consist of bi-level coaches. known for their comfort and smooth ride. After leaving my hometown´s station, the train quickly accelerates to the top speed of 100 mph - not bad for a commuter train. The ride to Hamburg takes only 30 minutes.

Hamburg Central Station was built in 1906, substituting a number of termini of the early days of railroading. It is quite an impressive building, right in the heart of the city.

Allied bombings nearly destroyed the building, but unlike in many other German cities, it was decided to rebuild it and keep the old architecture. But we did not come here to admire the grand old building, let´s take a look inside!

The station has 18 tracks - 8 for long distance trains, 6 for regional services and 4 for Hamburg S-Bahn (local commuter) trains. With 18 tracks, you be there is a lot of activity. Watching trains is like partaking in a tennis match. There is hardly a minute without any train movement.

In the 1990´s the interior was modernized and the station now sports a shopping mall. As you can see, it also has the embassy of good taste, marked withn that big, yellow "M" Smile, Wink & Grin

More than half a million people frequent the station each day. As you can imagine, a train arrival means a lot of pushing and shoving, given the fact that a train usually stops only for not more than 3 minutes.

Let´s take a look at those local commuter trains (S-Bahn). They service Hamburg and its immediate hinterland. It´s a 91 mile network of DC operated trains, running on 3-rail track (it´s not Marklin!). The service was started in 1906 as well, initially steam operated, electrification began early in 1907/1908. The fleet of EMU´s has been modernized recently, replacing pre-WW II and 1950´s trains with comfortable, smooth riding equipment.

The old...

... and now the new sets:

As our train ticket allows us to roam Hamburg, we will take a ride on these trains. We will also use Hamburg´s subway system to go to the harbor. The line to the harbor is an elevated line, that´s why the Hamburg subway is called the "Hochbahn" (High Line).

We still have time to do a harbor cruise, if you like.

Time to take the train home now, as supper is waiting ...

Have a good day!

Although I have Jeffrey on the prayer list, I'd like to start a prayer chain for Him and for Johnboy, another one we have not heard from lately!

They are our two most criticals patients, Johnboy with his cancer ordeal, and Jeffrey's foot issues.

Jeffry DOES have a positive outlook in most cases, so he sounds now in the face of losing his body parts. I wonder how many of us can do the same? He just lost one foot, and now the other is in jeopardy?

I try also to have a positive outlook, though I may not always succeed.

It is far easier to have a positive than a pessimistic outlook!

{ANd I, I used to take that dark pessimistic  road all the time! MOH helped change that, that and good medications}

So, Lets ALL say prayers for Jeffrey and Johnboy, maybe it cause postive outcomes form the negative experiences thay are experiencing right now!

There are two prayer candles that shine brighter than the regular prayer candles, those are reserved for Jeffrey, and Johnboy!

I will take some pancakes and homefries, thanks.  Today is another day of job searching, I may try Lowes today sincethey are hiring for the season.  I've got two apps in at two different grocery stores, and such.  I refuse to work at walmart though, I hate everything it stands for.  Anyway, tonight will be a good night, we may get to start working on the yard at the club layout-It hasn't been touched since it was all wired about 5 years ago.  We just need to start the buildings, and the ballast.  I finished up weathering a building (see First weathering attempt" thread), and more of the chainlink fence.  Tonight may also be more of the inventory of all the material the club just got today.  Oh btw....what would be better, get a hollowcore door or use a table of 30ish or more lbs of solid maple or pine?

Good morning and happy Friday.  We will be heading up north skiing later in the day.  It's likely to be the last time this season, as the story from the mountain is that they will be shutting down many of the lifts after Sunday, including most of the interesting, more difficult terrain that I prefer.  So, it will be back to trains.  Last Sunday, I ran trains for about an hour, but it's the only time I've touched my layout for a month.

Best wishes for all that are ailing these days.  Remember, even if the light at the end of the tunnel is a train, well, trains are fun, too.

As long as Ulrich has us looking at Euro-trains, this is one from a couple of years ago when we were in Florence, Italy:

We hopped on this one, which took us to our destination in great comfort.  We used those credit card miles and all travelled first class that day.  At the other end of the line, we walked out of the station and found some gons:

Good Morning Everyone!

Thank you Garry for the update on Jeff, I too was concerned when there was no news from him.  His situation was a little more severe than originally believed.  Hopefully he will be posting in the near future and he can see for himself, all the folks that care.

Ulrich, thank you too for the tour and info about Hamburg. The European rail system is amazing. It is too bad we can't seem to achieve that level of efficiency, because we are not a train oriented society and the monies needed to support the infrastructure are used elsewhere.  Not a political statement, just my personal observation which I'm sure differs from others. Anyway.... it's finally starting to warm up around here, but it is rainy.  April showers I suppose.

Take care all,

Eric

Good Morning!!!

Coffee please. No thanks, nothing sounds good right now, maybe later.

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 46.

Tom- Your experience with Scouts sounds about like mine. I made it through first year of Weblos (sp?). Pretty much a babysitting service as I recall. I think we camped once in the few years I was in it. Other than that, crafts and a snack. Oh and I seem to recall having to always buy something from the "authorized Scout Store".

Personally I think Scouting, like many things, should only be run by people who care and want to be leaders. NOT by just trying to talk some parent into being a Pack leader or whatever so they can have another Den or whatever. If you’re begging some random parent who can give a few hours a week to be a Scout Leader, you might as well not have one at all. It does the Scouts as a whole a dis-service. Many walk away with the idea that that is what it is and speak the same to others and will have the same feeling when their sons get to asking about Scouting. Putting a cowboy hat on someones head doesn't make them a cowboy. They're just someone with a nice hat.

Garry- Thanks for the update on Jeffrey. Glad to hear he is in good spirits and doing well.

Ray-  Brenda got one of those fancy shmancy electronic scales a couple months ago too. She said the old bathroom scales were just that. Old. And it wasn’t reading right anymore. She got this new one and well, she claims it doesn’t read right either. I just said, that’s what you get for buying one on closeout. Probably junk.Whistling

Not sure what today will bring.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning All,

39F here at the shop. Quiet morning as we all beaver away at our projects. Good news for me this morning, my long anticipated ring and pinions are ready to ship from merry olde England.

Garry, Thanks for the update on Jeff. I thought he'd be in more trouble than he thought due to the lack of feeling and diabetes. I'm heartened to hear he's convalescing and to me it's even better that he's being kept away from home for now so he can really get rested and heal up properly. I get nervous every time he relates his exploits on the trailer or at his dads.

Well, I've been at this an hour and been interupted umpteen times so I guess I'll just post for now and try to get back later. Cheers, J.R.

The first batch of the stumps tunred out perfect after I stained them with diluted India Ink.

howmus, how did you make your stumps? Or are they commercial ones. I'm going to need to make quite a few and have been pondering just how to go about it. Been thinking of making a mold and casting them out of P of P but haven't decided.

Lend me your ideas one and all.

SUNSHINE... at last on my shoulder makes me HAPPY Big Smile Temp is even going above 0 today. Maybe get some of the white stuff melted for a change. Going to take a while let me tell ya.

Already took MOH shopping at Wally World to get her months supply of war paint so the rest of the day is for whatever. Hmmmmm wonder what it will be?

It's been raining all day here in the "Burgh". As I'm still fighting a cold, I'm not doing much of anything. Got a load of towels & face cloths washed, dried & folded this morning, and that's been it. I forgot to mention in my last post of some frustration this past Wednesday. Coming back from running an errand, we were stopped at a red light by NS's tracks. Here comes a freight with the Norfolk & Western heritage unit leading. No camera, no time & no luck. And to pile it on, there's an East Erie Commercial RR boxcar. Now I just picked up a model of that car in the middle of March. Sure would have been nice to have a photo of the prototype.

Ray - Now don't be putting too much junk around that fence. I don't want to get all dirty while railfanning. Oh, you say I can use the picnic table. Thanks. Appreciate it. I think you fit into a category that I see in a lot of folks. And that's those people who are talented in say music, and are also talented in the other arts. Then there's me, who seems to have no talent in anything. Well, that's not exactly true. I can usually make a mess of things faster than most. Like your other post on clouds. I thought they were commercially bought backdrops. Silly me. Should have known better.

Hope everyone has a good one...

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, just a refill for my mug.  Dark roast please.

I tried four times to post earlier and the post kept disapearing.  Ended up on the front page of someplace called Kalmback or sumptin'....  I have the forum bookmarked and always just come directly to the General Discussion page here.

Dennis, I just make them on my MicroMark table saw using the same cuttings from the trees in my yard I use for the tree armatures.  Then I usually use a light india ink stain to give them a weathered look.  This last batch didn't come out right.  May have to replace them if I can't correct it.

Dark and gloomy outside here in the Finger Lakes today.  Current Temperature is 50°F and sprinkles of wet stuff...  Supposed to get about a quarter inch of rain later this afternoon.  I have to take the PiP to Canandaigua to getn it serviced and turn off the constant warning Message on the main screen in the car that says, "Urgent!  Service required!"  Yep, time to rotate the tires again....  That's about all this 15,000 mile service is.  They will top off the window wiper fluid and check a couple other things and then turn off the "Urgent" sign.

Tomorrow I get to work Train Crew out at the Museum for a Scout Troop that will be camping out there and doing a service project for us.

Ulrich and others, thanks for the comments on the project.

Jimmy, good luck with the interview!  Hope you get the job.  BTW, I agree 100% about Malwart...  I spend as much of my $$$ as possible in small locally owned stores where the profits actually stay here in the community and their employees are paid a living wage!  No, I don't mind paying a bit more when it helps the community... I'll stop while I'm ahead.......

Catch you all later!

Dennis:  Happy birthday!  Happy B-Day  I always look at my birthday as an excuse for me to go out and buy myself a present.  I am thinking of a Bachmann GG-1, even though it doesn't fit my location and would be for my planned "next" layout, which of course will be much bigger and will contain an electrified main from somewhere.  Or, I might get a doodlebug because they're kind of cool.

Dennis:  I got a bunch of stumps from Musket Miniatures.  There are quite a few in the package, and they look very nice once painted and weathered.

Good to hear that Jeff is feeling cheerful.

I shop local whenever I can- espically model railroad stuff.  While the local hobby shop may not have much of what I need, I always make sure to buy least something from her.  Whether it is a tunnel portal, ground cover, or even a single freight car, I always make sure I buy something locally.  Anything I cannot get through her though, I get a order directly from Walthers, since there is no other store close to me. Oh well, Still raining on the NS Mon Line, although I did get the Reading unit again before the clouds opened up.  So all and all a decent day so far.  Thanks for the well wishes as well for monday.

Jimmy - Have you tried ordering from Walthers through your LHS?  I do that all the time.  I send him an e-mail, he orders through them, he gives me either his store discount (10-15%) or the Walthers sale price (usually 10%) whichever is cheaper.  I pay sales tax, but no shipping.  The sales tax is usually cheaper than the shipping.  He does a big Walthers order every week, so it's no problem to add even something very small.

Well, LOTS of news!

First, Garry..I sent you a  PM. did you get it? If not, please PM me!

SecondHappy B-Day to V8Vega Dennis! Getting oldER is the one thing we are all doing at the same time!

Jimmy! congrats on the interview, may it go in your favor on Monday! I will add that to the prayers list, too!

MY news: I went and paid off the Kia Sedona! SO now we wholey own one minivan and one car{with great gas MPG}! I miss the savings, but sure won't miss the payment! I have not had a car payment since I paid off my '87 truck until the Sedona again. Now it feels good to not have a payment again! MAy our next vehicle be paid for in cash!

SO now I wait til MOH comes home with new car..I COULD go meet them to pick it up, but i'd have to drive home seperately,{I'd wnat to ride in the new car}  and besides, iT is MOH's moment!

Plus I am whipped! I have been running around since 7 AM until just a few moments ago! I had errands to run.

Maybe a little cat nap?

Jimmy - congrats on the job interview - hope it goes well. If you can get a foam core or honeycomb core door it will be almost as light and much stiffer. A solid core costs a ton and is HEAVY Stick out tongue

V-8 Dennis - Happy Birthday!

Cdn Dennis- there was a thread recently on using cloves for treestumps in Ho - hope it wasn't something I saw April 1st but....

Oh and Trainworld has Atlas code 100 flextrack back in stock.
