They were made by Stoney Mountain Classic Castings. These were offcasts/defects. They all have something wrong. I stumbled across them on Ebay while looking for $10 grab bags.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of hot oatmeal and brown sugar please, and my usual dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR mug.

Currently its all of 19°F outside the window here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS.  May get up to the low 20s later today.  Warmer weather is on its way they say with the high getting to 40°F on Friday....  Tonight will once again be below 0°F.  I should have just about enough firewood to get me through the heating season...

My son stopped over this morning with a car seat and a pick up permission slip so I can get Granddaughter #2 from School tomorrow at lunch time.  I will be watching the girls for the next couple of days as their Grandmother will be watching her grandson (DIL's sister's son) while his little sister is in the hospital getting a feeding tube put in.  The girls name is Lexi, and has Rett's Syndrome.  She is 5 years old and now has trouble swallowing food.  She has never learned to walk or speak.  Probably never will.  She is aware of things going on around her and may understand speach...  Please keep her in your prayers!

I have to get a pile of Scholarship Applications over to the High School Guidance office so I will pop back in later this afternoon.

The GP7 arrived today. The GP9 is still out there somewhere. What was a nice shiny UP 114 is now rusty, weary L&A 2014.

Howdy ...
Ray ... That's sad about the 5-year old. Sometimes life seems unfair.

I spent the day driving to and from Nashville for a medical appointment. The doctor visit went well, but it was a bad time to drive because of effects of the winter storm of a couple of days ago. It was foggy with slippery roads. There is still a lot of snow and ice all over. It looked like Michigan instead of Kentucky and Tennessee. Getting from our house to the highway is challenging with 4” snow covering 3” of solid ice on our road. On I-24, a tractor-trailer truck went out of control and on its side in a ditch ahead of me while I was still in KY. TN has massive amounts of broken trees from the ice storm. There were traffic back-ups in places. … On the way back, the temperature was above freezing, and road surfaces were dry on I-24. Crews were busy cleaning up cargo from the overturned truck….. Finally, I could barely make it up our steep, icy hill with the Avalanche in 4 wheel drive.  … Weather guessers are saying it will be warmer in the days ahead. Hope to get rid of the ice and snow.

The interview was successful and the audition was deemed unnecessary as I was suitably articulate and literate for the volunteer manager.  My first session will be tomorrow morning, recording obituaries and features from the local newspapers for the mid-morning broadcast.  Thanks for all your encouragement, tomorrow will be an interesting challenge.

Hi gang!

Finally, I am please to report that I have come out of "retirement" and am back in the work force. Started training last week, and sold my 1st car today. Brand new Kia store, so it was now only my 1st unit, but the stores 1st sale too!Big Smile I almost had 2 sales today but the bank doidn't get back to us in time. Thats ok, the customer wants the car, and we will be back on the phone with the bank in the a.m.. We will get this one done too.  After 32 years in the service end of the business, I am quite enjoying being on the front end!Big Smile The only downside is we are short on personel, so everybody is working from 9 am to 8 pm, 6 days a week till we get more personel. Cuts into my modeling time!!

But thats only for a while,,,,soon Il have a 40 hour week again!

I'ce caught up on a few threads,,but my eyelids are heavy....

L8ter all! Angel Prayers & peace homies!

Karl

: Good luck with the job.

*

As I reported earlier the Bachmann GP7 arrived today. I applied some homemade number boards, painted, rusted and weathered the shell, changed out the cheap couplers with Kadee 148 Whisker couplers, removed the Bachmann decoder and put in a Digitrax DZ125 decoder. Doing that last wasn't without it's issues. I quickly discovered the 8-pin plug of the DZ125 stands too high and won't allow the shell to seat properly. So I cut the plug off the decoder, cutting the wires right at the pins then did the exact opposite with the Bachmann 8-pin plug, cutting the wires right at the decoder then spliced that plugs wires to the DZ125's wires. I now had a DZ125 that had a plug that would allow the shell to seat. The hardest part was soldering the wires together and that wasn't a problem. I put the loco on the program track and it checked out OK.

I don't have the GP9 yet. It only made it to the Leesville PO today so it's gonna be another day or two. The GP7 was sent USPS snail mail and the GP9 was sent FedEx Smartpost which is supposedly faster. They were shipped the same day and we see which one got here first don't we?

It's raining here, has been since early afternoon. It's 43 at this time and there's a fair chance it's gonna rain most of the night. The low is supposed to be 38. Tomorrow will be near 60, much warmer than it's been lately.

I copied Pacman (some of y'all might remember that game) from one of my SD cards to a floppy disk but had a problem getting the program to load. Kept getting an I/O Error. I verified the integrity of the disk and it checked out 100% good. Turned out the DOS on the disk was clobbered. That was an easy fix. I simply copied the DOS from one of my system disks to the disk with the problem and that fixed it. I played several games of Pacman using the keyboard controls. I HAVE GOT TO GET A JOYSTICK! More important things to do first.

Time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Good luck with the job.

If I lived close, I'd love to support you in your new adventure.

However, I regret to inform you that I certianly won't be buying a new car from you.

I bought a Kia once, and once was one too many times.

Now there is one part that IS essential to it, that is still on order{control arm}. I also am currently still awaiting a part-non essential for driving fortuantely, but for a recall that is now 7, going on 8 weeks wait for each. Good thing it is "non-essetnial" to the driving of the kia, but as far as comfort, it is everything{heating pipe}!

I hate waiting for slow boats from S. Korea, and don't trust for parts for the "made in USA" versions either, because all the parts for my model are supposed to be "made {or at least available} in the USA" too.

I have had 5 recalls and "special TSBs" in 4 years. Plus a few TSB's the service writer "threw in" because I was adamant they be done.. One TSB-not a recall mind you, was to replce the sliding door's latching hardware to keep them from "flying open at hiway speeds, even when locked"! One was to replace a $900 repair on the coils springs in the suspension as they "are likely to crack and break"- MINE did, I narrowly missed paying for it out of my pocket!.

I HOPE you fair better with the job, and that KIA has its act together now. I don't wish bad cars on anyone.

Good Morning!

Happiness is ...

... having the money on our bank account, a fridge filled to the brim again, and a certain package from the US to arrive at our doorstep!

Oh joy, oh rapture! Now, all I need is my April MR to arrive Yeah

The  Bachmann loco came with a few parts off, but that´s OK. A pair of tweezers, some superglue and the desk lamp switched on took care of that. I already installed the smoke stack cap, but I am not decided, which type of headlight I want. The loco comes with a choice of three different headlights. I also need to de-install the decoder and install the jumper plugs to get it running on DC, which I will be using on my layout.

Karl - congrats on the new job. I cannot confirm Galaxy´s grief with KIA cars, over here, the have a repution for good quality. Each individual car undergoes a special control routine prior to being handed over to the customer - maybe that makes the difference.

Ray - I feel so sorry for the little girl and her parents. They are in my prayers, as anyone else in need!

Have a good one!

Edit: As I will start to make drawings of the buildings on my layout, I need some input onmeasurements:

  • What is a typical height from floor to ceiling in a 1880 building?
  • How big would a typical door and window be?
  • How thick are clapboards?

Anybody around here who could give me the proper input?

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a breakfast burrito please. Thanks

Mostly sunny, with a high near 39.

Ray- Prayers for the little girl.

Bill- Congrats on the position.

Karl- Good news and congrats to you too on the 1st sale!! Buddy of mine’s wife is on her second KIA. Not by necessity, but by choice. Been good to her.

Another friend has purchased a freezer (proudly made in USA so the sticker say) and….it doesn’t work. We’ll be taking it back today. Same place he bought a stove for the rental apartment, also proudly made in the USA, which was missing a couple screws and a bolt and wingnut that were essential in the final assembly of the thing. I supplied those and after a minor adjustment so one of the knobs would stay on it worked at least. Now I say to him maybe you should look for a sticker that says “Cheaply made in China.” They seem to have all the parts and work when you get them. Whistling...He sneered.

Aaaanywho. Doing some laundry this morning and then a few odds and ends then w*rk. Brenda has purchased laminate floating wood floor for the elevator office. The old commercial tile has come up so much you can’t keep up with it. She got the okee dokee stamp to lay the new floor. THAT means I’ll be putting that down in the next week. Probaly this weekend IF she gets the old floor taken up by then. She didn’t ask me to lay the floor. She only asked to borrow my saw and the tools. Oh, she did ask if I would help her. So I know what that meansSigh.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Nothing planned for today unless the GP9 arrives which I somehow doubt. Regardless I have the couplers, decoder and weather powder ready.

Blood sugar reading this morning is 128. Exactly what it was when I checked it at 10:45 last night. What are the odds of that happening?

Gave my new loco a thorough test run. She runs like a charm, right out of the box! Checked the lubrication and added a drop here and there. The motor growls a little at slow speeds, but I guess that´s due to the PWM DC I use. The decoder is still in, which means starting voltage is at about 7V. Once going, I can reduce this by 1 or 2V. Top speed is at about 40 scale mph, which is quite OK for this beast.

My layout needs to be about 10" shorter, so I will have to rework it a little. A quick check showed, that this can be done without spoiling the overall effect of the layout. Next step? Get the benchwork built!

Jeffrey! LOVE the 'over 50' line/image/photo! I fully concur!

Ulrich! Glad your loco does well. I haveone Bachmann that growls at the low startup speeds too, but doesn't seem to mar the operations of it. Out of 14 Bachmanns, it is the only one doing that.

V8-Vega: sometimes my brain and fingers dod not work in harmony well, that is often the case. Dyslexia is no fun! It may make sense to my brain, but not to others, MOH is far worse than I am!

Todd; i have actually had good luck with the recent "made in USA" appliances. USA cars are not without their own problems, but the Kia seems to have more than its "fair share", no wonder Kia stopped making the model! My biggest gripe is that the parts from S Korea take so bloody long to get here, that It irritates me to no end, especially for recalls. But for  a vehlcle to have so many recalls and TSBs doesn't sit well with me. Especially since i am not really wearing it out. There used to be a bunch of the Kias at one place I shop at, the workers all seemed to have one parked in the employees lot. They all changed about 4 years later {about a year ago} to the Dodge/CHrystler models! I assume they all changed when the Kias were paid off{?!} THAT is what we will buy next time.

Anywho.

Have a migraine creeping in.

so it will be a do-nothing day.

MOH has scehduled a day off to do nothing for the 29th and is counting the days. Is exhausted between the two jobs, unfortuantely we need the money from both for now, so MOh is kinda stuck. The second part time job normally woudl have cut hours for MOH and the other employees, but MOH is a "high producer" so they WANT MOH to work any available hours MOH has. Even limiting the hours to jsut 2 days  a week, They schedule MOH to work both days. The second job is going to provide us with the down payment on a newer vehicle for MOH to have for the priomary job. WIthout that income, We would not be able to do it as soon as MOH wants a newer vehicle{actually the time is NOW, but must wait a year more}. It is a 16 yr old rust bucket, but seems mechanically sound. Knock wood, aluminium, plastic or something! The "rust bucket" part MOH is not happy with. We could probably get a grand out of it. and the Kia, with all its faults, has to be paid off first. One car payment at a time.

So that is our story and I stick to it. Or is it "I stick it to it"?

Bacon cheeseburger and chocolate shake please!  The first day on the radio went well.  I recorded the broadcast of the most popular segment of their broadcast day....the obituaries!  Followed by feature articles from the Wall Street Journal.  Had to cut the recording short because the whole building's electricity was being shut off for utility work.  And we thought the real railroads were wierd....

I got the GP9 done, for now. Did a simple patch for the L&A, added some dirty yellow weathering for a subtle effect, installed Kadee 148 couplers and a Digitrax DZ125 decoder. This time I went ahead and used the 8-pin connector that came with the decoder. I got the shell to seat by cutting a hole in the top of the shell for the connector to come up through. The dynamic housing covers up most of it. The front row of pins was showing a little so I painted them black to make them less obvious. The only effect on top is that the dynamic brake housing is closer to the forward exhaust stack.

I drive a Cobalt and I am STILL waiting on the recall notice.  Funny thing is, the GM places will not do the repair work without the recall letter. Anyway, wish me luck, I applied to some grocery stores around here.  Not exactly glamorus, but at least it is something to get me back into the workforce.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could sure use a hot cup of decaf right now....  I don't think Winter is ever going to end in these parts!  Did get all the way up to 26°F today but will go back down to 12°F tonight.  Tomorrow they say it will get into the low 40's and then go down to the mid 20s tomorrow night.  That is more the usual around here this time of year.

Update on Blacksmith Shop Project...

Finished the sides (wings) on the stonework today and did more fitting of the foam base for the shop.  Here it is from a few angles tonight:

I have to do some minor leveling of the shop ,on the base, and then the stone wall will get stained....

Spent much of today watching my 5 year old Granddaughter.  She was being a sweety today.  Spent part of the afternoon snuggling up with me on the couch watching TV.  She got out a little toy train that goes around a small oval.  We played with that for a bit.  She finally layed down on the couch and took an hour nap.  Granddaughter #1 got off the bus and then they both had to get ready to go to dance class.  They left when their Mom got home, and I headed back home to get ready to go to a Troop meeting.  I intended to just stop over with some papers I had, pick up a revolving district award the pack won a year ago to get back to the comittee putting on the Distrct Dinner and then head back home...  Right!  Spent 2 hours confering with the Commissioner of the pack (I am commissioer for the Troop) about some mistakes on the recharter roster that are still there and how we should jump up and down and holler and scream at the Council Office about it...  Finally decided we need to have a meeting face to face with the District executive and nicely tell him we are not happy!!!

Have yet to hear how the surgery went for my DILs Niece today....  The last she had heard was around 1PM and the little girl hadn't been taken into surgery yet.  By that time the kid hadn't eaten anything in over 18 hours and was not a happy kid!  Hopefully I will know something tomorrow as I will be again watching the granddaughters...

Have a great night and my prayers for all in need!

That's gotta be the best switch machine cover I've ever seen!

Nothing more today than what I've already covered. The GP9 and the GP7 I did yesterday are both running fine. Other than working on the locos I watched some TV and played some games on the //e.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

It's after 3 AM here, so morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD FRIDAY MORNING!

Today is Friday,

March 7th, 2014!

Healing thoughts,

prayers,

and energies for

those in need!

There once was a young man called Tim,
Who thought his girlfriend was really quite dim,
For she wrote a love song,
But must've got the words wrong,
'Cause the chorus praised herself and not him!

A Limerick's easy to write
Five lines with a humorous bite
And the first one must rhyme
with two others each time
While the middle two pair make it right.

Quote of the day:

Man needs to go outside himself in order to find repose and reveal himself. -José Martí, revolutionary and poet (1853-1895)

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Ray -I was reading the March issue of Model Railroad Hobbyist, when I came across an article by someone who must be your kindred spirit. Thought it was written by you at first.

The weather has improved around here this week. Above freezing during the day. Now that isn't all that great, but when compared to what we have been enduring, it's a step up. We are planning on railfanning Saturday with temperatures expected to be in the low 40s. Sunday morning, we are going to check out some spots to railfan CSX here in Pittsburgh. Don't do that very often, as traffic is much lighter than NS. But that may change as CSX has been doing a lot of construction to enable double stacks and have plans for an intermodal yard in McKees Rocks. They daylighted a tunnel on the South Side, and I want to see if that area is open to the public. So we will do a little exploring in our backyard, so to speak.

Hopeveveryone has a nice weekend...

Good morning..... I'll have oatmeal and OJ please.

Looks like a lot of ice and snow can melt today with warmer weather.

Happy Model Railroading!

I didn't expect to be back here this soon, but I found this link on a high school alumni forum I belong to. I really enjoy old photos, and this link has some great ones. There are many old railroad photos, city scenes and boats. You Navy veterans, check out the sailor's uniforms. Enjoy...
