  Morning All,

Currently it is 61 with an expected high of 94, under still smokey skies.

Not much going on here, w**k is really all. With crazy retail schedules, I can't seem to find time in the morning, and too tired when I get home to do much. Back yard needs a lot of weeds to be pulled, and the front has quite a few also, just not enough energy to do it.

Only computer game I play now, and not very often is MS Combat Flight Simulator WWII Europe Series. Get fly and shoot at German planes. Not very good at it, but I have some fun.

Glad to hear Jeff is doing as well as can be expected.

Prayers for him, and all that need them.

well accomplished  a lot already.

Went to the grocery store, the bank, the CU and the paharmacy, put away the groceries, had a nap and have laundry going now. dishes done as soon as I get off here.

I think the lady next door cannot wait for her 9 y./o and 5 y/o to GO BACK TO SCHOOL!!! NEver had that problem myself, SOmetimes I wish I had kids, most times I don't. AS I age, I wish it more to help in old age, but I'd probaby be a cranky mean old coot whom his children would not want to help!

MOH is getting on track with work hours for second part time job, finally. It is so sad that MOH has only part time no benefits jobs open thanks to you know what program. I have to budget in the cost for You know what program now for MOh at least.

Good to know Jeffrey is doing fine! I am sure he is relived to have ti gone. Now if he can endure the painful "phantom pains" it will leave him with, so much th good.

Well, the dishes won't wash themselves

Coffee in a SOUTHERN mug, please.

Sending healing thoughts to Jeffrey. I hope recovery will not be too painful and that in time this actually proves to be better than what he was dealing with before.

Afternoon guys

I found a smoking deal on a P2K GP7 with sound. Try $60 bucks. It was too good to pass up, for a P2K with a soundtraxx. It's a southern green unit, and a friend of mine models southern. I might be able to sell it to him without the sound decoder for about what I paid for it. Then I could use the decoder in my SD7 or one of my GPs.

Cleaned the workbench some more. I found the pieces to finish my U33C's chassis. And I bought another U30C too. So I have a group of a U30C, U33C, and another U30C. Definitely coal train power. I have all the stuff necessary to decoder the 3 and have beacons. If atlas had a stock of parts, I would have a 4th. I have a U30C in my parts box. Needs a motor and flywheels from the older U33/36Cs, handrails, and a few parts. I could try some brass stanchions for it, but I don't want to have a dummy unit.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just another cup of decaf please....

I have been at it all day...  Beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel...  Hope it is not a speeding freight train coming at me though.  I have the photos for the (reunion) slide show resized and loaded into PowerPoint.  I hope to have it roughed in and put in order tomorrow.  Then add some other stuff to keep it interesting.  Drove to Canandaigua at noon to meet with one of the ladies on the reunion committee.  We were to have lunch at Wegmans and start to put together the nametags to be given out for the Saturday evening banquet...  She never showed.  I waited 45 minutes for her and then checked with the Catering dept. who are putting on our Social on Friday night to make sure the slide show will work with their equipment.  Then drove back home and left a ???ing email for the classmate saying, "I guess we missed each other".  She wrote back saying that is because we aren't meeting until next week...  DUH!  I put it in my calendar a week early.

Good to hear Jeffrey is recovering well.  Hope he will be out of the hospital by the weekend!  For his sake and the Nurses...  WhistlingLaugh

Lawn is growing where I put down some seed.  The cool and damp weather is helping it along.  We got a couple good showers today and had a high of 72°F we did.  Whoopie!  Most of the day was overcast and gray as well so the solar panels put out a whooping 13 or so kWh today.  At least the air conditioner is off!

Prayers for all in need out there!

pretty much that's what I'd be doing. I have 2 BN GP9s that came out about the same time as this southern GP7. So I'm gonna swap the chassis, then try to sell the non-sound equipped southern GP7 to a friend.

At the train club, someone brought in a February 2013 Model railroader. Let's just say I made it into MR sooner than I expected, and not for what I wanted. If you read the little article (IIRC, trains of thought with niel) about "model train disasters" and come to the part about the GP18 getting chewed up by the ice maker. That was me, lol. I still have that GP18 sill. I rebuilt it and have started upgrading it to make it correct for a BN unit with the extra steps in the well.

hahaha, no way packer that was yours?! awesome!

Packer I'd like your advice on reprinting an E unit into the ex CB&Q silver, would an aluminum color be just as good. I super detailed it and I'm not liking the way it turned out. I plan on getting some CCS silver BN cars to mix into the 10 car Kato set I have as well as replacing the original #9942 with another non modified model.

Grrrrr... stupid me trying to improve my model looks, better just stick to running them and scenicking layouts.

ok here's #9942, I'm not done yet but the paint patches don't match so I'm gonna completely repaint it into a ex-Q locomotive as well as redecal it for the BN again. those BN silver E's were gorgeous.

Good Morning Folks,

time to show up before you folks put me on the MIA list.

Before all, I am just glad that Jeff is doing fine. That candle is still lit up for him until he is home!

Campaigning  is rather exciting, but not really in a positive way. I am on my way to the southern part of my state, where our campaigners have been attacked by ultra left wing people. The attack left tow people hurt, one of them had to be hospitalized. Topping this, there has been an attempt of arson. Unknown criminals poured gasoline around the house of one of my colleagues. Fortunately, the police was able to prevent them from igniting it. I have a meeting with the DA and local police on this at 11 am today.

Fortunately, My home is in a rather rural area, so I still feel somewhat safe. Local police is keeping a closer eye on my neighborhood, though.

Remember, this is not Russia, China, Syria or Egypt - this is Germany!

Well, I must get going - CUL & have a good one!

Edit: I got TOPS! Janie, here is my CC - what ever they chow hounds will be having today, put it on my tab!

morning coffee in the diner..

GOOD WEDNESDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Wednesday, August 14th, 2013!!!

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!

Today's {clean} Limerick:

There was a young man so benighted

He never knew when he was slighted;

He would go to a party,

and would eat just as hardy,

as if he had been invited.

Now, for the "real McCoy":

Meaning:

The real thing - not a substitute

Origin:

The Scottish racing cyclist Sir Chris Hoy won the sixth Olympic gold medal of his career at the London Games on 7th August 2012, making him the most successful British Olympian  and elevating him even higher in the sporting firmament in the UK than he was before. This is far from the first time that Hoy has made news here and the red-top newspapers strained themselves to come up with new headlines - 'Medals Ahoy', 'Hoy Joy', 'Six Machine', 'The Hoy Wonder', 'Knight Rider', and so on. They couldn't do better than the line on the banner that his proud parents unfurl each time he wins - 'The Real McHoy'. This is of course a paraphrase of the expression 'the real McCoy' (or 'real mackay', 'real macoy', 'real mackoy'...), which rivals 'the whole nine yards' and 'the full Monty' for pre-eminence in the 'I know where that phrase comes from' stakes. As usual, plausibility and frequent retelling are considered enough for absolute certainty. With that in mind, please read on...

There are several sources that are suggested as being the origin of 'the real McCoy', for example:

  • McCoy is derived from Mackay, referring to Messrs. Mackay, Edinburgh, who made a brand of fine whisky from 1856 onwards  that they promoted as 'the real MacKay' from 1870.  The expression could have  derived from the name of the branch of the MacKay family from Reay, Scotland, that is, 'the Reay Mackay'.
  • After Kid McCoy (Norman Selby, 1872-1940), American welterweight boxing champion.  The story goes, and there are various versions of it, that a drunk challenged Selby to prove that he was McCoy and not one of the many lesser boxers trading under the same name. After being knocked to the floor the drunk rose to admit that 'Yes, that's the real McCoy'.
  • Elijah McCoy, the Canadian inventor educated in Scotland, made a successful machine for lubricating engines that spawned many copies, all inferior to the original. He patented the design in 1872.
  • The feud between the Hatfield and McCoy families, of West Virginia and Kentucky respectively, in the 1880s.

The list goes on to include several other versions  but none is supported by any evidence and they carry little credibility. Given that there's no hard evidence, the favourite has to be the earliest example to be found in print. That's a close call, as many of the sources date back to the second half of the 19th century. The earliest known printed citation is from 1856, in the Scottish poem Deil's Hallowe'en:

"A drappie o' [drop of] the real McKay."

This clearly refers to the McKay (or MacKay) whisky. The 'real MacKay' expression occurs in Scottish newspapers quite frequently in the 1860s and must have been in common use in Scotland at that date. There's no proof (no pun intended) that  MacKay's whisky is the source of this phrase but we can say for sure that Elijah McCoy, Kid McCoy and the Hatfields and McCoys weren't involved in its coinage as their respective supposed involvements all come years after the expression was already widely used in print.

The 'Real McCoy' variant, which is essentially the same phrase, comes later and the earliest examples found come from Canada. James S. Bond's novel The Rise and Fall of the Union Club, 1881, contains this:

By jingo! yes; so it will be. It's the 'real McCoy,' as Jim Hicks says. Nobody but a devil can find us there.

A December 1891 edition of the Canadian newspaper The Winnipeg Free Press also includes the expression. Given that Elijah McCoy and the phrase 'the real MacKay' both moved from Scotland to Canada, it is possible that the adaption from 'real MacKay' to 'real McCoy' was done by him or on his behalf, but the real 'real MacKay', like the 'real McHoy', is Scottish

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the #2 special, over easy on the eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sourdough toast this morning.

Currently 58°F outside the door here in the Finger Lakes.... 14th. of August and the high today will be all of 67°F.  Cold and, ah, changeable may be the best way to describe it.  The sun was just shining brightly out there as the rain was falling.  Sun didn't last long though.  Today will be a good day to finish up the slide show for the reunion I think.

Ulrich!  WOW!  Hope they catch the perps and that you and Petra stay safe.  Extremism on both ends of the spectrum is scary!

Hope Jeffrey is continuing an uneventful recovery!

Stay safe out there!  The world is full of whackos I think...  Later!

Morning all! Almost afternoon I suppose too...

Anyway, cold here today but it's kinda refreshing.

Time to sell the house I think. It just seems too crowded and filled with "stuff". I keep tidying up and pitching things but it seems like all I am doing is shifting the piles from one corner to the other and back again. I told my wife that we need to move to cull the heard and start over. Keep the heirlooms and treasured mementos (...and trains of course...) but sell everything else. Fresh start, clean slate and no more clutter. Surprisingly, she never said "no"...but she also never said "yes" either...Confused...you know how the ladies can be at times.

Well, off to move more piles of goodness knows what...Grumpy

Have a good day all!

Don.

Well

Erm

Today it is now, at the hottest part of the day, a mere 61F! at the airport on the hill. Only 4 degrees warmer down here in the valley. Is this August or October? WHAt WILL october be like then when it gets here???

A do nothing day ALMOST.

Went early to get a new Miracle Wave oven. It a miracle it waves the food warm!  The old one had peeling paint inside it and was in danger of arcing. It started peeling under the wheels or the turney-thingy under the glass turn plate. Then it spread. Only the glass probably kept it from arcing. Spent a pretty penny at WAlly world. Cost $10 more to have the 6 preset timed buttons {which we like}, but $40 more we coulda gotten tthe 1100 watt, for that money, I said no we will deal with only  1000 watts!

Got a letter form the Energy dept. of the county, WE may be eligiable for a new refridge, a new freezer  and a new H2O heater. Free  WHy? we are eligible to have all the windows replaced with double pane vinyl windows in 2014. Free as low income recipients in the program waiting list. A new furnace TOO, We may talk them into adding the Central A/C since we just did the furnace.Dunno if we get as our applances are not  younger than 15 years, and we have to again quailify. got the application in the mail today.Won't hurt to fill er out and send er in! Sometimes good things do come our way. But I bet we go on another wiating list!

Well, dinner will be surf and turf- salmon and steak, rice-a-roni, the San Fransico treat, ding ding...and corn. NOT in the miracle wave.

Howdy Ulrich:  Be careful there. What are you campaning for? I guess I missed that.

I haven't had time to check in here lately. I get on the computer maybe once a week for a few minutes.

We got one of the hay bailing customers done yesterday. Last night it rained and today was forecast to be rain so I took the day off. A friend of mine came over and we played with the trains in the basement most of the afternoon. I had a really good time.

Well it's time to hit the hay. I also have to check the weather. I'd like to cut another place tomorrow if it's not going to rain.

morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD THURSDAY MORNING!!!

Today is thursday, August 15th, 2013!!!

MAKE IT  A GREAT DAY!!!

Today's {clean} limerick:

A maiden at college, Miss Breeze,

Weighted down by B.A.s and PH.D's,

Collapsed from the strain,

Said her doctor, "It's plain,

You are killing yourself --- by degrees!"

We often need a "shot in the arm", SO:

Meaning:

A stimulus

Origin:

This expression is derived from the invigorating effect of injecting drugs. A shot, is of course, US slang for an injection, either of a narcotic or medicinal drug. That term has been in use since around the beginning of the 20th century. For example,  this piece from the San Francisco Chronicle Supplement, October 1904:

"I varied hardly a minute each day in the time of taking my injection. My first shot was when I awoke in the morning."

'A shot in the arm' came soon afterwards and the first mention of a figurative use of it in print to be found is from the Maine newspaper The Lewiston Evening Journal, January 1916:

The vets can give politics a shot in the arm and the political leaders realize

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY! ONLY YOU CAN!!

  Morning All,

Currently it is 60 with an expected high of 94. Still a bit smokey out there.

Back to w**k today. Got a lot done around the house yesterday, even managed to get some modeling in. Not much else happening here.

Prayers to all in need, and especially Jeff.
