Gidday, cool, 55 F, wet winters night, fires lit, so nice and toasty, and Ziva has just been on the box.

In particular, anything about the Lucas electrical system demanded that I carry spare parts and tools at all times.

Ah, Joseph Lucas, "Prince of Darkness". A Triumph Trident motorcycle was my pride and joy, so also know about those electrics. Sigh. Thank goodness for a kick start.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All Those who need them.

Cheers, the Bear.

Morning coffee in the diner..

GOOD TUESDAY MORNING!!!!

Today is Tuesday, June 4th, 2013!!!

I will light the prayer candles fror those in need...

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!!

GYP JOINT:

This term is associated with any place that will cheat you in some way (usually out of money). The phrase goes back to when Gypsies arrived in England around the 16th century. When someone was swindled by one of them, the phrase "I was gypted" was used.  They called them Gypsies because they thought they came from Egypt {shorted to Gypt-sie see?}  Some were naturally honest, hard-working people, but any business that they owned was called a gyp joint.

Later on, in some areas, the referenced place came to be a "clip joint" instead, because one lost their money to people who were not Gypsies

gyp joint

noun Informal.
1.
any business establishment that charges excessively for poor-quality service or goods.
2.
a gambling house in which the games are dishonestly run.

Origin: 1930–35

Hanky Panky:

Refers to anyone fooling around, either with some underhanded business deal or intimately, etc. The phrase originates from magicians who would wave hankies around to misdirect the attention of the audience from what was really going on while they did their tricks. Just like magicians would rhyme words like "hocus pocus", "abracadabra", the "panky" got added to "Hanky" just make a rhyme

Good morning from Massachusetts, and it is a good morning.  Temperatures got down into the 50s last night, so it was easy to sleep comfortably even with the big fan off.  No more brutal heat in the 10-day forecast, which is about 7 days longer than they can really predict, andyway.

Jake, congratulations.  It may not seem like much, but a lot of young men and women never get that far.  A free high-school education is probably the greatest gift that society gives us here.  You've taken advantage of it, and now you're on to bigger things.  Well done, and we're all proud of you.

We had a small amount of excitement yesterday.  I got a cell phone call while pulling on to the Interstate on my way home.  Being sensible, I chose to ignore it until I got out of rush-hour traffic and parked at the hardware store to buy some ant stuff.  First, I had to listen to the "call me" voice mail from SWMBO.  She'd lost her car keys at the mall.  Not just any mall, now, but the Burlington Mall, where they filmed the definitive 2009 cinematic masterpiece, "Paul Blart, Mall Cop."

Failing to get me, she called her friend, who went to our house and brought over a spare set of keys.  I listened to the story of how she'd checked everywhere, and retraced her steps, and talked to the people at the shops she'd been to.  She'd already left her number with Security, so there was nothing for me to do but go out to her car, rummage through the pile of jackets and sweaters in the back seat and give her back the keys when I found them.

So, here's my tip, something I learned in Drivers' Ed 50 years ago:  Always use your keys to lock your car.  Don't use the buttons on the door.  That way, you can't lock the keys in the car.  With remote locks on most cars these days, it's easier anyway.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a waffle with maple syrup please, thanks.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 75.

Sounds like we’ve all had the daughter that bounced off the bed and sent us to the hospital. Ours was at the hotel when we went to the St Louis zoo. Bounced right off into the crack between the bed and that immovable nightstandSurprise. Staples in the noggin for her and I could hear her wailing in the waiting room.

Garry- Nice to hear your Mom is doing well.

Well today is my full day of w**k (chuckle). In between I guess I need to do some house claning and some laundry, and I need to load my burn pile in the truck and haul it down to the village burn pile because the Spring burning time enacted at the urging of this muck of new people over the last several years who moved to town for small town life and immediately started complaining about things that irritate them, banded together and got an ordinance banning burning passed, has expired……transplantsGrumpy. Their mere presence irritates me. I wonder if I can get an ordinance passed banning them. Health issue you know.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Mr B- I have a phobia about locking a door. I cannot do it unless I have the key in my hand looking at it before locking, or I should say closing a locked door. Building or car doesn't matter. Old Chrysler I had would not lock the drivers door with the auto lock button if the door ws open so you had no choice but to lock with the key. My truck will do the same thing (power lock button just doesn't work) if the key is in the ignition and door is open. If not, like your wife's you can lock away. I rarely use the remote to lock. Just not used to it. I also can't turn the pump on at the gas station unless I am looking at the method of payment I choose in my hand. Not just knowing the card is in my wallet or the cash is in my pocket, I have to actually see it first.

When LION was Little Cub, we drove dad to the airport. Actually dad drove and we rode in the back seat. Dad took the care key out before locking the car. And then flew off to Washington DC with mom's car key.

For the 50 years since then, both mom and dad had spare car keys tucked away in their wallets.

Mom did have a spare car key (and a spare house key for that matter) at home, for all of the good that would do us. The wife of one of dad's co-workers drove us home, and a neighbor drove us back to the air port to fetch the car.

Oh yeah, of course, the house was locked. my younger brother was shoved through an open window so that he could open the door for the rest of us.

Good morning. It's 73° with 82% humidity. The high will be 92°.

Today it looks like I'll be working on cleaning up the layout. It needs it. Tomorrow will be a wasted day as I have an appointment to get my eyes examined. Oh joy.

LOCKED CAR DOORS:

HMM... I tell EVERYONE who is  apassenger and rides with me NOT TO PUSH ANY LOCK BUTTONS. I, as the driver, will take care of that! WHY? you ask? because when power locks CAME on my first power window./door  lock vehicle {1983}  EVERYBODY getting in wanted to PLAY with the dad blamed buttons! Up and down go windows, and down and up go windows, AND IF i didn't have my keys, we would get locked out. SO THE DRIVER CONTROLS THE DOOR LOCK BUTTON.

IT took until MOH once locked us OUT of the vehicle for MOH to LEARN NOT TO PUSH The dad blamed  button when as a passenger!!!!

Harrumph!

well we go look at a 2003 T&C and see what ewe think, I think we can swing it IF we sell MOH's 1998 vehicle soon after. Dunno if good thing or bad, as it is 10 yrs old and I KNOW what all we did to the 98 at 10 years old. SO...BUT MOH needs  a better vehicle to do the new job takign special people to and form DRs. appts. and such. so we will go see it if it hasn't been sold by the time MOH is done with Physical Therapy.

Well, got laundry going best get to it,

later

My last few cars had autolocking doors and all power windows. As soon as the gear selector hit 'D' or the vehicle started moving every door locked. My current vehicle is a dinosaur with all manually operated locks and windows.

 Morning All,

Currently it is 58 with an expected high of 91 under sunny skies.

Three of the four vehicles I own have manual locks and windows, my little Isuzu PU, 1992, has a 5 speed manual trnsmission and no a/c, and it has 236,899 miles on it. I will probably take that into w**k today, as I have a closing shift and a meeting afterward, so it will be around 10PM when I get back in it tonight and will not be too hot.

Ordered some Atlas flex track from Caboose Hobbies yesterday. I also ordered 5 Walthers turnouts and a box of WS Track Bed from Walthers. I need to get some more red and green leds, some diodes and resistors for same, for turnout control switches. Anyone have a good on-line source?

   Prayers to all in need.

We got to railfan for a couple of hours on Saturday. Intermodals and some nice mixed freights for the most part. But at one point, I looked up the tracks and thought "What in the heck is that coming?" Turned out to be an interesting MOW High-Railer in a configuration that I haven't seen before. The High-Railer was pulling 4 gondolas, the second of which had a tracked "CAT" sitting on top.

I thought it looked pretty interesting, and it got me to wondering if anyone has put together and runs an MOW train on their layout on a regular basis.

Morning Gang,

TOM,  Love the pictures and just wanted you and others to know that those High Railers are built here in our  city at Brandt Industries in Regina.  They are very popular for MOW and Short line railroads and are shipped all over the world.  To answer your question,  YES, I do run a MOW train quite often.  It is made up of a weed spraying tanker which is a masonite pad cleaning car, a couple of difco side dumps three ballast hoppers,a heavyweight diner/tool car and a crane and tender, pulled by a high nose GP7/9.

Chloe, can I still get breakfast ?  If so, I would like a double Denver and a cup of decaf when you get a minute,  Thanks.

We got back from our three week trip on Saturday evening. We got as far south as Horn Lake, Mississippi and that was for the Memphis Bar-B Que, which was wonderful, I could eat there every night.

Spent a week in Branson and felt the edges of that tornado that got OK. City the first time.  We had lots of rain, wind, hail, lightning and thunder but no twist to it.

Enjoyed the Convocation of our youngest Son from MSU where he got his Masters in Psychology. He is now very busy sending out resumes and taking a training course this week in Birmingham, Alabama.

The sad part of our trip was that we didn't get very close to seeing Cape Jim or Heartland Garry.  We did go through Marlon's City  (Clinton, Mo.) but it was raining so hard we decided just to keep on moving.  Sure hope there will be a next time.

Picked up some mrr goodies along the way in Hollister, Mo. and Kansas City and a few flea market purchases of some vehicles.  We took my Wife's HHR this time and it ran like a top. Highest fuel price we paid was $4.02 in Iowa, but in total it would average out around $3.85.. You folks are getting closer to our prices up here every time I go south.

So now it is back to yard w--k and of course that other w--k that I have retired from four times now. I swear I'm going to quit for good soon.

Sorry to hear of some of the troubles some Diners are having and my thoughts and prayers are with you.  And also with all the folks who were targeted by those storms.

It was a similar type view of a scrap train down here that gave me the idea of having a tracked CAT riding on a gondola full of scrap.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, just a tall glass of lemonade for me at the moment.

Just thought I would stop in to see what is going on...  Nice cool and sunny day here in the Finger Lakes.  Currently 62°F with a high of 67°F sometime this afternoon they say.  I have been busy carting topsoil around to the second raised bed garden today, and doing a few other odds and ends.

I best get back to w@rk I think...

Later!

I've got these old MOW cars.  I think they were made by True Line back in the 1960s.  I remember saving up for these on my teenage allowance to get to the $30 the set cost.

I think I've got metal wheels on all of them now, and of course Kadees.

Whistling    Mr.B.,

Those same cars now come in a MOW set from Walthers.  I had that car you show in the center, I think they called it a tool car and when I bought the set from Walthers, low and behold there it was again. This time it was "grey", originally it had been "orange".   And guess what ?   The set is no longer thirty dollars either.

Just a quick post, in case RioGrande5761 is listening. RGrande, Elliott (AKA BigBoy4005 - not sure on the number part of his old handle) was the one who started this Diner, then known as the Coffee Shop, as a place where off-topic posts (non-MRR-related) were permitted. Before the Diner (and another topic, which I believe was the Beer Barn), if you got off of MRR topics you might get a talking-to from one of the forum moderators (not quite as hard on you as Vinnie is, though).

From what I recall, Elliott was involved with a MRR club (in Minnesota, I think) which had a layout (modular?) that they would set up in one of the enclosed malls in their area at some point in the year (like around the holidays) and run trains to infect expose the general public to model railroading. He wasn't as active in the Diner when I started hanging around here (and I would have to look up when that was - 2006, maybe?), and a few years ago (maybe even 7-10 by now), his health began to give him problems, and he did eventually die. We renamed the Diner after him several years ago, in his honor.

Hope that fills you in some (in addition to what others possibly already have). And though I will likely find what you wrote as I get caught up on the posts this month, what's your layout like? (Yes, as one Diner mentioned, we're sure that the D&RGW is amply represented...)Smile, Wink & Grin

Evening All,

Went to Quintin's kindergarten graduation so he is officially in first grade now. He goes tomorrow to get a cast put on his arm. I go back to w**k tomorrow to a projected very wet 3 days. School is officially over tomorrow here so only 1 more day having to deal with the idiots going to the high school in the morning.

Next week I am going to renew my drivers license. It is unbelievable the paperwork I have to bring in. What frosts me is all the hoops I have to go through to renew my license, never mind I have served in the military for 21 years, paid taxes my entire life, vote every year, and have no criminal record. SoapBox. OK Vinnie I am done. Sorry.

My train club is helping some Scouts with the MRR merit badge this Saturday.

Here are some trip photos

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

And they made you take your eyeglasses off. All IDs are going to a higher standard of identification to meet federal requirements. The reason why they made you take your eyeglasses off is that they are using Facial Recognition Software, and are building an ID base which is almost as good as finger prints. If you hold a second license somewhere, or try to change your name and get a new one, they will ave a better chance of finding this out.

Next time congress gets a feather up its world trade center your ID will have biometric data embedded in it, probably based on DNA.

The upside of all of this, is that, with a secure ID system, we will soon be able to vote on line just like they do in Central Europe.

And they made you take your eyeglasses off.

I do believe you're right!  I was about to say that they made me leave my glasses on, because I am supposed to wear them for driving, but I looked and lo and behold, after putting my glasses on so I could see the picture better, my picture has no glasses!  Around here, we get new licenses every 5 years, but only need a picture and eye test every 10, so for the intervening years we have a mail-in system.  Still the same charge, of course, but I don't have to wait in line.

Still, it makes me wonder why anyone would want us to have a government-run health care system that would be as cost-effective as the Department of Defense but run as efficiently as the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Sorry.

Curt, it would not matter IF you : never served in the military; avoided or paid little taxes; never even registered to vote; and HAD a criminal record, you'd STILL have to bring the paperwork!

EVEN for voting now they want photo ID. And as soon as possible , tgo facial recognition programs, they WILL knwo if you voted, and probably HOW you voted too, even though "anonymous" HA.

Ever see the movie GATICA?? it was about a love child versus a "chosen DNA superior child" whereby everyone had a  registry of DNA and even an EYELASH found at the scene of a crime was to be used to find the perp.

Soon, as mentioned above, you will have  microchip ID with DNA database in it used for any ID situation.
They are collecting databases for the "purpose of IDing people WHO may have committed crimes that were previously "cold cases".".

You can thank the previous president for his passing of laws that about guarantee the right to do anything to you at anytime, guilty or innocent. It is now legal for police to search and  siezure you any way any time they see fit,  with or without probable cause, according to the supreme court.
Again, thank the previous president and the terrorists!!!

SoapBox over

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Home Front Central Air system is DOA. Bang Head So I guess I am buying another window unit, something around 1100 BTU. Oh well like I need any more train engines.

Well for a while now I've been having internet problems. I can stay online for a little while, usually thirty minutes to a couple of hours and then the connection just goes away. I have to do a complete system reset, computer, modem, everything to get it back and then the cycle starts again. I've had this happen before and it was due to a bad IP. Once Suddenlink stabilized the IP the problem went away. I think that's what's happening now. This staryed about a week ago when a storm knocked out the cable service here. I haven't had good service since that time.

Got an eye appointment in the morning so I'm calling it a night now. See y'all sometime tomorrow.
