The Alaska Railroad stretches 470 miles from Seward on the south-central Kenai Peninsula, to the northern "golden heart" city of Fairbanks. Along the way, the train travels through some of the most scenic and rugged territory in Alaska, including Denali National Park, Denali State Park, and Chugach National Forest. The Alaska Railroad runs two primary passenger services during the summer season. On the rail north of Anchorage, the Denali Star operates daily between Fairbanks, Denali, Talkeetna and Anchorage. To the south, the COastal Classic operates daily between Anchorage and Seward.
The Denali Star rail route travels north of Anchorage along the Knik Arm and through the towns of Wasilla and Talkeetna. Heading north from Talkeetna you will pass over Hurricane Gulch and through Broad Pass before arriving at the railroad station at Denali National Park. The bridge at Hurricane spans 918 feet, some 296 feet over the Chulitna River. Your trip from Denali Park to Fairbanks will take you through Healy and Nenana and several other small communities. The entire railroad trip spans over 350 miles and takes 12 hours. Nearly everyone breaks the train trip up and stays in Denali National Park or Talkeetna for a few nights. Your railroad journey offers a number of great views of Mt. McKinley, and an excellent chance to see wildlife such as moose, bald eagles, and bear.

Busy modeling here. Tomorrow 2 2-bay Trinity hoppers go to paint. They started life as 3 bay hoppers, but fell victims to my sick mind. See NOBODY makes a 2 bay Trinity hopper, and Lehigh Cement owns a bunch. So to get some,, I had to make some!
Also renumbered the last of the MMID Hoppers. Now just to weather the last 8 (out of 37)!
Also just finished a remotor and DCC/Sound install on a buddies Athearn GP40-2. Apply function 8 and you can't tell it from an Atlas !

Work Front Well I am working in another store. I think is is temporary? Dave (area supervisor) says it is, but he lies like a rug. For now I am working in St Charlies MO again, long drive about 40 miles each way. Scott is the manager there and last year I told Dave I refuses to work with him again! Well Scott is on medical leave, so I will work there for now.

So, Alaska it is.... can't tell MOH or she'll want me to book a cruse ship from here down to Vancouver. I HATE CRUSES let alone a cruse through glaciers. Cruses are supposed to be warm.
Since it's been raining for days here I've got some wo*k done on my RR. Scenery w**k that is. Took a few pictures. Mind you I still have to paint the backdrop, plant some grass, trees etc. but it's a start anyway.
Just a couple of pictures. Not totally happy but we'll see once the rest of the "stuff" is in place. Which reminds me, I still need to move that stupid light switch...

Today has been better than the other day.
My car doesn't leak anymore. No, I didn't change the timing cover to block gasket in record time. That stop-leak or whatever actually worked. For how long IDK, so no long trips. So I'm good to go around town tomorrow.
I also got my Walther's 50' coal gons. I had enough styrofoam to make loads for them, but don't have enough wood to make the supports for them... The interior bracing is nice, but it makes getting a coal load in them a bit trickier. I've since removed the protomax couplers from all but the A-end of one car and the B end of another and replaced them with the remaining dummy couplers I got from Dennis (speaking of which, where is he?, and "That editor"?) I have the wheelsets in painting at the moment. The mask only holds enough for 10 cars, I had 14 cars (the athearn rtr thrall is getting it's wheels painted as well)
As for the finger, I talked to my doctor friend. She said it looked bad, but it seemed to be healing already. I tend to heal faster than most others for some reason.
Jeff, is that an example of the "sugar crash"?

Since I got my potassium level back up I feel much better. I'm still having bouts of dizziness when I stand though. Checked on the Varney metal F3B. Been a bit busy at w**k providing content for THAT Editor. We've had track and field season wrap-up, boys' State Soccer Tournament finishes tomorrow, girls Regional Soccer is in full-swing. I thought I'd finally meet Sliced Bread this morning during our semi-weekly facetime, but he was unavailable. Maybe next week or the week after. Was in Des Moines yesterday for the aforementioned State Soccer tourney, in the rain for most of the day. Lots of flooding in Iowa, looks a lot like it did in '93 (at the start of the flooding, THAT-is).

Well (clear full, toads packed up and left weeks ago, said to send 'em a postcard when we get "normal" weather again), I see the twisters have been out playing again. Hoping CUDAKEN is OK, sounds like the St. Louis area was hit. I've got family in Norman, OK and the live stream of KFOR TV4 said THAT city was hit. My parents were house/critter sitting there when Moore was hit. Dad said they were 3-4 miles away from the Moore monster, couldn't see it, but heard it just fine. The Aunt and Uncle who live there put in a new tornado safe room earlier this year, looks to have been a very, very good idea.
Somebody mentioned hacking up 3-bay hoppers and making 2-bay's out of them. THAT's a trick the CNW did for real out of Pullman Standard grain hoppers. I've built 3 or 4 of those now, it's a great re-purposing of old Athearn blue box foobies.
Whoever's doing THAT (KB-something?) please tack up a photo when you get 'em built. Also, Lehigh Cement was mentioned. Cedar Rapids used to have a Lehigh facility, right next to a Northwestern States facility. Both are closed/abandoned, one was taken over by Holcim for a brief period of time. In other news, the Loving Wife procured some 2x4's and foam for use on the RR last weekend. She said something about it being the annual celebration of the day of my birth (which I DO NOT "celebrate," nor even acknowledge, although she does for some reason) and therefore she felt compelled to spend some money. Crazy woman! The 2-by's will go in a short hallway between the RR room and my office where a lift-out section will carry trains from the layout to either staging or a further extension of the Cedar cRapids Industrial Branch. The foam is a start in getting a little further along from the Plywood Central phase. But, until I definitively decide what I'm gonna use for a turntable at the IC/ICG/CCP yard, I can't foam everything. Options are: make a traditional 'bridge' turntable out of an el-cheapo Atlas (perfect size), grab a Walthers non-powered 90' turntable (modifications needed) which is a bit too long, or get a perfect-sized craftsman kit which costs far more than I wanna spend for a scenic element. Decisions, decisions, decisions. In the meantime, the "graphic element" CNW yellow and green stripes THAT have separated a darker "sky blue" from a "lighter" sky blue are finally being covered over. I've been dissatisfied with 'em since I put 'em up in the first place, cut 'em down by half, now they are being replaced with continuous "sky." I'm blending the two blues which is giving a kind-of wispy, high, thin cloud appearance. IF I ever finger out how to get a decent photo of it, I'll tack THAT up. Speaking of the CNW, I saw where GARRY ran an old-school CNW Geep-7 through here not too long ago...nice! Was gonna comment on some other things, don't remember what though so I shall yield the floor. Actually, I'll probably go and call it a night. Long week, little sleep. Chris .... Glad you like the CNW GP7. It was a gift to me. I suppose, if the family member who gave it to me ever visits, I had better have a decoder in it so I can run it. I just set it on the track to take a picture for you. ... I don't recall if I told you. My friend, Gus, is a retired IC engineer and worked on the Iowa lines (IC, ICG, CC, IC agin, and CN). His HO layout has a roundhouse and a good quality turntable. .... I here there has been lots of rain in Iowa.
I had company today and did a layout tour. Everything went very well. Ran a lot of trains including the Zephyr I just posted in WPF.

Good Morning!
I am feeling pretty miserable. Party work certainly is no fun at the moment, but it is my brother, who is giving me more than a headache now.
It was my father´s wish, that Petra and I would stay mobile, so he suggested to buy a small, but new car and let him take over the bill. He also wanted to get his old car out of my mother´s reach - for good reasons. You can imagine that I was happy to oblige, as I dearly need a set of wheels to do my job now.
This morning I received an email from my brother accusing me of illegally making use of my father´s situation, who was, when he told me to do so, still in command of all of his senses, in fact, there was no sign of his sudden death. My brother does not accept my father´s wish, although I send a copy of that statement to him. He says I have forged my dad´s signature and he wants me to pay the money back to my mom´s account, which I can´t do. If not done within the next two days, he will initiate a court trial on the matter.
With that family, you don´t need enemies. I wish I were in a position either to just hand over the car to him, or pay him the money, but I don´t have this sort of change. What he finally will achieve is, that I will have to resign from my office and withdraw from politics, fouling up my attempt to return to a normal life.
I am having bad heart problems as I write this, the whole situation is killing me.

Good morning! It's Saturday, and we're in day 3 of what's supposed to be a 4-day heat wave. We kicked on the AC in the train room - family room last night to watch TV in comfort. Bought a "gourmet" pizza because we didn't feel like cooking. We watched the recent movie "Anna Karenina." Early on, I sense something was amiss when they showed a train running through the Russian winter. It was barely better than a Christmas tree display. Pretty much everything on Weekend Photo Fun is a better representation of a railroad than that scene. As I watched the movie, it was obvious that they put in a lot of stuff like this intentionally.
It's still earlier than I usually get up on weekends, not even 9, but I'm going for a bike ride before it gets too hot. The SWMBO list is trivial, so I hope to get to the Envirotex pour today.
Dennis, I had no idea how I would react to a cruise environment. We booked a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands with another family, so we had 4 adults and 3 kids. It was one of those where the ship sailed all night and then was in port all day. Each day, we pre-arranged a rental van and toured the island. The ship was really just a floating dining hall and bedroom, and it served that purpose well. It was a great vacation.
Ulrich, rest assured that you're not the first who has seen his family torn apart over money, and you won't be the last. My wife is upset about how much her parents continue to give to her brothers to support them. One is doing OK and working hard, but still complains about how little cash he has, and the other refuses to even look for a real job. Her Dad is a smart cookie, though, and will probably make it come out even in the end. Still, I expect the brothers to start asking us for support once the parents are gone. It will be easy to say, "Sorry, we're retired, and we can't spare anything for you."

Lawn is getting mowed today. Won't be push mowing because the mower I use is on it's last legs. Spend more time trying to keep it running than actually mowing.

Only plans today are to go to the club later. Washing uniforms currently. It's windy outside and will probably rain later which is good because we need it badly. Tuesday I have a awards ceremony to go to in the AM at my youngest grandson's school.
I was in Alaska in 1993 for about 4 hours. I got off a sub with some other sailors and had a approximately 40 minute van ride to Ketchikan to catch a plane to Seattle and then on to Pearl. I remember how beautiful the scenery was and how cold it was (October). I have tried to get MOH interested in a cruise there but she just is not interested.
Prayers for the folks caught in those devastating tornadoes that have lost so much including loved ones. Prayers also for the firefighters that have died in TX and that are in the hospital trying to recover.

Ulrich- I m truly sorry your family issues continue. My family has no money to speak of so I hope to avoid some of the heart ache you are enduring.
