Howdy ...

The rain has just arrived here. So far, not too stormy.

Happy Anniversary to Mr. and Mrs. Seamonster and to Mr. and Mrs. Cdn Dennis!

Curt and Ken .... Nice layout photos! Keep on posting them!

Jeff ... I like the diner interior!

I completed an unusual project on my worktable today. My Walthers Northern Pacific SlumberCoach was lettered incorrectly in the factory. It said Northern Pacific on one side and Missouri Pacific on the other side. I have never had anything like that before now. I changed it today so it has NP on both sides.

Speaking of NP, where is Sue?

There are some other MIA's also.

Shelley and I will be taking a Southeastern starting Sunday for a week. it will include family gatherings and birthday celebrations as we drive from here in KY through TN, Al, GA, SC, and NC. I had intended to visit model railroaders along the way, but we are driving too many miles in just one week to do so.

Looks like I have top honers, chow hounds. Enjoy!

Dinner in town went quite well. I had a chimichanga with rice and a salad. The thunderstorms busted loose while we were there and had settled down to a moderate but steady rain by the time we left there. It's still raining now and I can hear more thunder in the distance.

It's time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evening guys

Interview today went ok. I have the option of taking or not taking the job. Basically I'd be in charge of doing the flower displays at the comissary for a week or two in june or july. I'd be making 8% comission, so average about $160 a week. I'm not liking the prospect, but the one of the managers there started out doing that and he's now making $18 an hour with full benefits. I'd have to work night shift at my current job if I were to do that. I don't mind the prospect of a future promotion, but flowers and comission?

Trainwise I've just been going through my stuff and looking for things to sell at the open house. I'm up to most of the stuff from the packages from jeff and ken, a few foobie athearn BB covered hoppers (before I cut them up into  other hoppers, like Chris), a weathered DVS box, MRL caboose, a athearn roatary plow (it's my BN green one, I should have the brown BN one), and a couple of other cars. PM me for a list after sunday afternoon.

Seamonster and Dennis, Congrats on your 48th and 42nd anniversarys (respectively).

Ulrich, Sorry to hear about your father.

Curt, nice loco

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Seamonster
We celebrated our 48th. anniversary yesterday.

Congratulations Seamonster!! Forty Eight years is a long time to be married. My wife and I celebrated our 42 anniversary yesterday so we are about 6 years behind you folks. I don't know about you but it seems like yesterday that we embarked on our journey together.

As for your comments regarding your hostess, ours too wore a very short, very tight skirt and my wife to referred to it as indecently short. Funny thing is, I remember my wife wearing skirts that short way back when too Laugh. I reminded her of that because it was way too funny not to.

Cheers

Evening All,

Made pork steak, Au Gratin Potatoes and peas for supper. Of course it was topped off with a coffee.

Cleaned my truck today and put new wipers on it. I found some adhesive globules on my truck that I can't get off without removing paint. I have no idea where it came fromGrumpy.

Seamonster- Happy Anniversary.

Galaxy- Happy Birthday to YOH and congrats on her new job.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Pleases.

Really did not feel like going to work today, called in and told them I be a hour or so late. Got to work at 2:15, I was scheduled to be there at 1:00. Dillon (other sales person) could tell I was not my self and asked why I even came in? While I was stand in the rain trying to write a vin number of a truck on soaking wet paper I said to me self, "I am done" and went home.

Don't know if I a really sick, or just sick of the job. Either way I have 8 days off coming to me and think I am going to use a few.

Galaxy. Great to hear some good news here at the dinner! Cake to your other half.

We celebrated our 48th. anniversary yesterday.  My wife picked where she wanted to go to eat.  For breakfast we went to Chez Cora.  It's a very nice restaurant, serving only breakfast and lunch.  What's unique about it is that they serve a lot of fruit with every order, right on the plate with the other food.  I had their breakfast special:  2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, a sausage, a slice of ham, a crepe (thin pancake), a slice of cantaloupe, a slice of pineapple, a large strawberry and two slices of toast and jam.  And coffee.  Very delicious.  It's not the cheapest place, the bill was almost $30 before tip.  But the food is worth it.  They have a very large choice of breakfast items.

For supper, she chose The Round Table.  We haven't been there for years.  It's a steak house, and has been there for 40 years.  The inside is divided into rooms, some holding about 6 tables, some larger rooms, and some banquet rooms, each with a fireplace.  We were in one of the smaller rooms and there were never more than two other tables occupied.  The decor is dark wood panelling, plastered walls and lots of stained glass windows depicting old English shields and heralds, subdued lighting.  They are famous for their roast beef which is what I had.  It was cooked just the way I like it and so tender it hardly needed chewing.  Served with au jus, veggies, mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding.  Expensive place to eat.  Our bill was $90 (no liquor) before tip.  Oh, and the hostess wore a very short, very tight skirt.  My wife called it indecent.  I had other words for it.

Got a storm front moving in here pretty quick and it's starting to look really nasty out there. Not only that, it's starting to feel nasty. When I stepped out a little while ago to put a coat of Krylon Matte Finish on the last two FP7 shells I could literally feel the electricity in the air. It could get bad. Here's the local radar picture:

I'll be back later if I can.

Good afternoon.

Outline for English due tomorrow. Shouldn't be that hard, once the note cards for a research paper are done it seems to be easy from there on out since you have an idea as to what you want.

Not much else going on, hoping to get some more work done on the 109 before painting it. Been a while, may also paint the little caboose while painting the 109.

Well my few little plans for today have already been scuppered. Even as I was posting this morning my father called and said we have to go to town to get all the gas cans (three 5gal and one 2gal) filled and then put them back in the old fridge they're stored in and lock it up. Why he can't do this on his own I don't know. We also had to go by the fire dept and unload about a hundred feet of old rubber fire hose he had in the bed of his truck. We got all that done and I still haven't had anything to eat today. So that's next. Something fast like buttered rice should be good enough. I'll have a couple of hours to get something, anything done on the layout before I have to get ready for dinner in town this evening.

Am I running in little circles fast enough?

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, just a bowl of organic granola and a large mug of dark roast coffee for me this morning.

Todd, I need to get down cellar as well to check on the seepage coming in.  i started the siphon again just before I headed out to bed.  probably needs starting again.

Yesterday was an excellent day for the solar panels.  not sure exactly how much power total, but estimate around 25 Kwh.  Cloudy outside right now with a brisk wind, but we have had a few episodes of sun too so far.  may get some precipitation this afternoon they say.

I have a meeting at 1PM today so I need to get doing several things needing to get done before then.

My prayers for the situation in Texas!  And for all of you folks needing them here...

Good morning. It's 74° with 82% humidity. It will be cloudy with light rain this morning. Heavy rain and thunderstorms later. The high will be 80°.

No plans for the morning or early afternoon. I may do some cleanup on the layout. There's decal sheets, paper clippings from numberboards and tools scattered around. Late in the afternoon I have a dinner to attend. Today would have been my mothers 75th birthday.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the breakfast burrito please, thanks.

Rain. It’s raining now, it’ll rain for a while.

Ulrich- I’m very sorry for your loss. However if we all could wish how to go, it would be peacefully in our sleep. Thank you for sharing some wonderful thoughts of your Father. Take care my friend.

Don’t know what will happen today what with all the rain and all. I just hope no storms causing power loss because I don’t want to deal with water in the basement and I doubt I could get to the generator in time….oh, there’s something I can do…, see if the generator will start before someone calls and “needs” something. At this point, it's 50/50...betting opens now.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

*Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn* Mornin'

ULRICH: Our deepest condolences go out to you from the "Eight Ball House in Clarence, Iowa." From what you've said about your Dad, he sounds like a great man. And, I can see where you got your love of trains from. It must've been passed to you in the DNA.

THAT Editor has had me pretty busy of late. Our worthless... our useful as t.... ah. Hmmm. Our "other reporter" left at the end of February? Maybe it was March. Hard to tell really. Anyhow, THAT means I've been picking up extra assignments with a corresponding lifting of the "cap" on hours. Apparently one or two part-timers will be brought on-board in a week or so. THAT Editor and Mr. Boss are looking at a pair of University of Iowa Journalism School grads. I'm self-taught, so THAT could be an interesting combination. They're both female (however, coming from the UofI, they may LOOK like females but in reality....SurpriseIck!)

Maybe I can get THAT Editor to authorize, and Big Boss to pay for the airfare to Germany. I'd gladly grab my trusty Nikon and notepad and do-up a candidate profile on ULRICH!

In other news, Murphy visited a couple of weeks ago: the fridge stopped refridgerating while the freezer was just fine. Cause? Crapped-out thermostat. We'll get the bill at the end of the month. Yippee. The same week, my formerly trusty Nikon D-90 took the big dump, just minutes before Sen. Charles Grassley (R, Iowa) was to appear at Clear Creek Amana High School in Tiffin, Iowa as part of his spring break townhall meeting series. Chuck, at 79 years of age, still visits all 99 counties every year. He also runs 4 miles/day 3 days/week!  The most likely culprit for the camera ceasing to cameraize, is a shutter malfunction/failure. It's old enough and had enough shots taken with it. So, I increased the debt load a little bit and bought a brand new D-7000. The good news is I can retire some debt next month.

On the RR front, Elevator G is on-hold waiting for some materials. In the meantime I've made significant progress on a P2K Geep to replace an Athearn blue box unit, rebuilt a blue box GP-50, started converting a Con Cor MP-15 to look like a CNW unit (go figure) and started chopping and detailing a Front Range Geep to replace another blue box unit. All of these are in various stages of completion. All are waiting on parts. It is stunning how many pieces and parts I "need" THAT are out-of-stock with Walthers, and how many have "unknown" for when they'll have 'em again. Against my better fiscal judgement, I found some from a shop with a theBay presence. THAT will move the projects ahead, a little.

In other news, we've had a crap ton of rain here, flash flooding all over the place. The drought we had is well and truly broken. We're due for rain all night tonight, through the day tomorrow, and THAT white stuff is supposed to be showering tomorrow night into Friday! I've got a training fire to shoot on Saturday...maybe. Right now it isn't looking too good weather-wise. We shall see what we see when we see it!

*YAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWN* Well (overflowing, hypothermic toads are shivering and huddled together waiting for THAT season known as "spring" to finally arrive), I've got a full day of writing ahead of me so time to hit the rack. Thoughts and prayers to those in need, and if you can...spare some for the firefighters and EMS personnel injured and killed in West, Texas.

Good Morning!

I did not catch much sleep last night. I felt like being in the movies, seeing a film about my life with my Dad. He was the one who infected me with the train virus by taking us kids to the train station on weekends, escaping my Mom´s weekend house cleaning actions. He taught me all he knew about trains and this was an awful lot. He had been a train buff from his childhood days, riding his bike to the next gate keeper´s shack to help him raise or lower the gates, waving at the engineer - instead of going to school. He often skipped a train on the way home, just to watch the Berlin - Breslau train to pass by, headed by one of those streamlined class 01.10 Pacifics. At the age of 17, during the war, he was commissioned to Deutsche Reichsbahn to replace the station master of Penzig train station, who was send off to war. When the Red Army was closing in on "his" station, he locked it, took a sheet of cardboard and wrote on it "temporarily closed". The station was completely destroyed and was never opened up again, as the town ceased to exist. After the war, in late 1945, he saw an ad placed in "Stars and Stripes" - a Japanese young college student seeking contact to railroad fans all over the world. He answered it, and a lifelong friendship with Dr. Setsuo Yokomizo from Niigata began. The two actually met a few years back and it was like a family reunion.

I am so sad that his last days were burdened with unnecessary hardship, maybe passing away was his way of finding the peace he so desperately needed.

Thank you so much for your kind words.

Ulrich, my deepest condolences to you and yours on your dad's passing.  At least it was peaceful!  Do know all of us here have you and your family in our prayers at this difficult time.

I managed to get almost everything done I needed to today and other than going to the bank for some $$ for the cash box for the Meet registration, everything is done.  Tomorrow is a meeting with the guidance dept. to talk about the applicants for the MLK Scholarships, then the monthly Museum Meeting and Program in Rochester during the evening.

Catch you all in the morning!

I got the two remaining FP7's decaled and numbered. 619 and 1599 if you want to know.

Now earlier I asked a question about these two locos. They're both Roco built but have different types of motors. One has a can motor and the other an open frame motor. Which loco is older?

My 'official' answer is that the one with the can motor is older. It's a Roco built Atlas made in the 70's. The loco with the open frame motor was made in the 80's. Presumably it's Atlas but there's no brand name anywhere. There's a scrubbed off spot on the bottom of the trucks exactly where the Atlas name would have been. However these trucks are on Atlas, E-R Models and Con-Cor FP7 locos that I know of and the Atlas and E-R Models both share the 70's body. I'm reasonably certain the Con-Cor model does as well. Near as I can tell the 80's model has a 48" dynamic brake fan whereas the 70's model has a 36" dynamic brake fan. There are other minor molding differences such as a second headlight on many of the 80's models.

Here's a photo of the chassis with the open frame motor.

Well it's time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.
