Evening All,
Finished supper of spaghetti and drinking a cup of coffee now.
CDN Dennis- Thank you for the kind words.
Ken- That is pretty savvy on your part with the money.
Karl- Nice building. It would work as a general store.
Jake- Good luck with the scholarship.
Hope everybody has a good night and prayers for those in need.
For those who said the chassis with the can motor is older you're right. It was made in the 70's by Roco for Atlas. The chassis with the open frame motor was made in the 80's by Roco. The loco has no brand name but is presumed to be Atlas. I'm thinking it might be Con-Cor.
Here's a photo of the chassis with the open frame motor.
Curt, your railroad talents are outstanding. What a beautiful layout! If I ever get to that stage I hope mine will look half as good.
Right now I'm sort of discouraged which is sort of normal at the stage I'm at. Feels like two steps ahead and one back but I'll get over it.

Vince's I came to the same conclusion but I don't understand why it is hitting it only sometimes? Motor seems to be fitting tightly, so I wounder why the flywheel hits only sometime? Oh well, it was free so what the heck. By the way Vince's, which side does the resistor go on a LED, flat or round?

I don't know for certain, bu I think it may have to do with the soft rubber mounts aging and the flywheels being out of balance. All I can say is just look around for spots where the flywheel would rub.
As for the LED and resistor, it doesn't really matter. And the negative and positive can vary by manufactuer. I've had some from the same pacakge be different.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
Cashed my check today for BoS being evil, anyone know what a $1,000.00 in quarters weights? I do, 50 pounds! Why I got $1,000.00 in quarters you ask? Simple.
1 Pain in the Caboose to cash in, so I won't just spend it.
2 Wife won't spend change.
3 Be a pain for someone to steal if my house is broken into.
4 If the house burns down, change will still be there, paper money, well gone.
5 Not in the bank because of Sue SSI. When they overpay her and they do it a lot, the will ask for bank statements and ask how much Cash we have. Well, I don't have cash, I have change.
Got in the habit of collecting change years ago. When I had a good job I had $8,000.00 in quarters, did a good job from impulse buying.

Afternoon All,
Spent most the day outside today. I cut my parents grass and trimmed, then I cut my yard after getting a wheel plugged and going to Wally World to get a new battery. Then I dropped my spare tire on my truck and went to get air in it then put it back again (driving it on vacation). After cleaning up I planted some more trees around the yard on the layout and ironed my uniform shirts.
I have my work physical in the next couple of weeks. I can't wait for the cardiac stress test.
Jeff- Based on what you asked I would say the can motor is older, but I would of guessed the open motor was older.
Talk to you later. Prayers for those in need.
Afternoon guys
Got tomorrow off from work, and have an interview on base. Hopefully I get the base job, because it has benefits, better pay, and normal hours.
Jeff, I'm going to guess the Can is older? I remember the Gp40 I sold to you has a can, and it's old.
Ken, One thing to check on those P2K SD7/9s is to see if the flywheel is touching the weight anywhere. I nearly drove myself bad on one of mine because of that. I kept taking the trucks out, cleaning and relubing them. Turns out that one of the flywheels was having intermittant contact with the frame and weight. I disconnected the driveshats, then cranked it to full throttle (on DC) and took some sandpaper to the flywheel. Then I filled the weight around the flywheels since there was some flash/burrs on it. Runs nice and quiet now.
Good afternoon.
Hand's sore from writing all of those note cards. Ow. Also collecting references for the scholarship. Thankfully, no homework, so I can get more work done on that scholarship.
I'm working on two Roco built FP7's today and decided I'd have some fun with a simple question. Both of them have their factory equipped motors. One has a can motor and the other has an open frame motor. Which loco do you think is older?
Mornin'.... Ah, Hmmm. Ahem! Afternoon folks!
Zoe, just a refill for the dark roast, please.
After reading all the posts here, I guess it is just another day in Paradise... I have already spent way too much time putting out fires. Woke to a flurry of emails from one of the organizations I volunteer with and am more or less the head guy for most things. Lets just say if they were 8th. graders they would both be waiting to see the principle! Have several hours of stuff to get done this morning which is already past, so that is how my day is starting out.
It does seems to be bright outside and the big round yellow thing is currently providing electric power for my home, so I really have little to complain about. I have a reunion committee meeting in Canandaigua tonight, a meeting with the guidance dept. at the high school tomorrow afternoon, a Museum Meeting tomorrow evening, and long meeting to interview the Scholarship candidates Friday afternoon, and the NMRA Division Meet on Saturday... Some time in there I need to get everything done!
Later!

Been messing with the Rio Grand SD 7and 9 this morning. Got the the SD 7 Parts engine running today and it is not half bad. In fact it makes less nose than the New Rio Grand SD 9 I bought at K-10 last week! Giving it some run time as I type.Only odd sound it makes is a clanking sound like one of the weights in the engine is not tight.
New SD 9 on the other hand is getting to be a pain in the caboose! Sounds like the worm gear bearings need to be lubed again!
LED's, the resistor goes on the flat side of the LED, right?
See you all later, Ken
Well
Went grocery shopping, spent a LOT for LITTLE.
Went and paid the auto and homeowners insurance.
Went to the pharmacy.
Went to the Credit Union.

Our shed door was hung open just now..nothing appears to have been taken...just the doors are broken and now something else we have to fix. actually the shed is in real bad shape anyway, and Woody Woodpecker likes its taste! SO crumbling. The doors are in bad shape anyway. May come open again in a storm! May have to screw it shut for the time being! Used white lithium grease to lubricate the exposed mechanism for locking.
Well, that is my tale of woe.later dudes!
Coffee and a donut, please.

Good morning. It's 73° with 92% humidity. We might have some rain today. It'll be cloudy with a high of 85°.Today I hope to get the last two FP7's decaled and numbered so I can move on to other things. There's this little Lima CP 0-4-0t that I want to take apart and try to get running again. All it's going to do is sit on a display shelf but I'd like to say that it runs. Another steamer I have is somewhat more ambitious and may be a complete waste of time. It's a Tyco 2-8-0 Consolidation. It's tender drive and the motor is toast.
This one picture from Hell on Wheels is almost enough to make me switch eras. And yes, the show is still alive. It's one of the "new model" of TV shows - they make 8 or 10 shows and then go off and make another "season's" worth if the show is a success. They don't seem to be as tied to starting their season in September as the legacy networks are.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
MisterBeasleyI dropped off an old computer that's been sitting in my office for over a year. In it was a relic - a 3 /12 inch floppy drive. I think it's my last one. I suppose now I can go through the closets and throw out all the old 3 1/2 inch floppy discs, maybe even the 5 1/4s, too.
Good Morning!!!
Coffee and some biscuits and gravy please. Oh and could I get a couple scrambled eggs tossed on top? Thanks.
Showers and thunderstorms likely. Cloudy, with a high near 71. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
richhotrainThe worst part, though, was flippin' all those burgers as my punishment. I have never worked so hard in all my life.
Didn't bother me any, you sure cook a mean burger.
Whoops, misspoke. I do watch Duck Dynasty. How could I forget that?! The tv here is on most all the time, probably why I’m never gonna get below the 41% in energy efficiency mark amongst my neighbors, and of course my friends talking, so I am familiar with some, well many of the programs like “Hell on Wheels” which I did start to watch during the first season. Didn’t think it was still on. But, again, something came up probably and before it became “habit”, for lack of a better word, I forgot about watching it. Others I’ve watched I start, then just lose interest. And I have seen many other shows from time to time and then others that are wildly popular, especially on network TV, I’ve never seen. Most times when I’m sittin there while others are talking TV shows and movies, I’m the one with a blank look on my face because I’ve never seen it. They seem to find that hard to believe and I just say well, when I’m home, I never remember to watch it. When I am home and in a TV watchy mood, I always hit the TV Guide and see what’s on either the Discovery Channel or the History Channel. I always give them first shot.
Ray- I didn’t remember (imagine that) the engine part, but I did remember about him building a plane. Now, I trust much of what I do, I really do, but I would NOT trust me building an airplane out of plywood. No.
Mr B- Probably cause there’s not much money if any, to be made off the CRT’s for a free day. I always thought “isn’t that something, other than a few times when you get to do it for free, you pay someone to take an item they are going to dismantle and sell parts from”. Maybe it’s to make up for the CRT type stuff.
Here's my issue with that kind of stuff. The Government should do something other than "promoting" recycling. There are plenty of things they spend our money one we don't need they can drop to actually DO something about recycling. You can "promote" recycling, but if it costs more for the recycler to take the brown glass to the actual recycle/glass plant or wherever, he's not gonna do it. You can "promote" and "campaign" all you want. If know one will take it, you ain't gonna recycle it. Just like the CRT's. Some dumps around here won't take em. Most all trash companies won't. But, despite that, people will find a way to dispose of them if the price for recycling gets too high. Some will give 10 bucks or so, others well.... But if it gets too high, then it's gonna be like a big ole game of Hot Potato. Wake up one morning find an old TV in your front yard. Go to sleep late at night because you had to take that TV and dump it in some strangers yard across town. The government needs to actually come up with a way to supplement this kind of stuff. Just my opinion.
Welp, best get doin something before it rains. Gotta get some wood for the restaurant and am not getting it if it’s a downpour.
Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning!
Earth Day came early this year. (It's next Monday, really.) Every year at work, we have an electronics recycling day.
Farewell to the second golden era. I dropped off an old computer that's been sitting in my office for over a year. In it was a relic - a 3 /12 inch floppy drive. I think it's my last one. I suppose now I can go through the closets and throw out all the old 3 1/2 inch floppy discs, maybe even the 5 1/4s, too.
But why, when they have electronics recycling, won't they take old CRTs? Isn't that the whole idea?
