I got an update on my mothers condition and it's not good. They asked us (my father, sister, niece and myself) do you want us to make her comfortable or extend her life artificially? Well the answer to that was unanimous. Make her comfortable. Since watching both of her parents kept alive artificially she's been totally dead set against it and told all of us on many occasions not to put her through it. Just let her go. She stated same in her living will.I think I'll take a break for a while. I'm rather upset right now.

Aha! Here's one!
G'Day mates!
Just stepping in for a quick "hello" and if you don't mind.....a quick vent. I'll have one glass of lemonade, light on the ice.
Phew! Drilling holes on these early run Walthers streamlined cars for handrail installation is T-E-D-I-O-U-S! This ain't modeling......it's torture!
Even proceeding carefully I managed to break a batch of #80 drill bits, or somehow round out the hole to a larger size whether I use the pin vise or Dremel tool operated with a foot pedal as recommended by a friend. I wish there were a tiny drill press available with a tiny chuck with a tiny collet that can hold a #78 or #80 drill bit! I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
Took me nearly 20 minutes just to install one hand rail! I guess I'm getting old.
Ok guys, sorry about that and thanks for letting me vent. Thanks for the lemonade. Well, it's back to those pesky streamliners.

Curt WebbWell MOH and I tried replacing the burner today. Got it done and there was a large spark and a puff of smoke (after the burner came on like it should) so the breaker is thrown and the stove is OOC until a repairman can fix it (I hope).
Afternoon, Flo - it's ME, CapeJim! Yeah, 't has been way too long. I'll have a RBF please. Thanks!
I am soooo way behind, I should make most of my post apologies (but I'm sure I'd miss someone for sure). Sad thing is, I haven't got that much done elsewhere - assortment of things (and most recent has been totally wiping a 500GB hard drive after getting the iMac all fixed up, so I could donate it for a church in the area to use. (Nope, won't be much of a tax deduction - if we still have any of those... - as my brother sent it to me gratis, and I only put a bit over $100 for the repairs and the drive).
No progress on my MRR stuff... But I can live vicariously through everyone's progress photos in here! Garry told me to come in before somebody started my obituary...
Speaking of you, Garry, nice shots of those gondola (& flat car) loads there. (Will be viewing WPF after I post in here) And I'm with you about Sue posting more layout photos, please! (don't even have to be very new)!
Oh, Sue, which Blair Line kit was that that you were building? I love their signs, and have some smaller detail stuff kits (track signs, small stuff) from them.
Rob, I heard that you asked about the Bachmann Climax loco, but the closest I have is a Roundhouse 2-truck Shay (would love to locate another one...). And besides, it's been way too long since I last ran any trains, I think I almost forgot how to. Good luck with your re-do/relocate of your HO layout. I'd agree with the others about the smoke question on your locos, if the survey's still going.
Man, it sure sounds like Jeff and Galaxy have had their share (& everybody else's) of rotten luck lately. I'm hoping that by the time I get through the rest of the past half-dozen pages or so of posts, that Jeffrey will have dug his way through the rigamarole (Galaxy? what's the spelling on that one?) of bureaucractic...um...schtuff!!
And sorry to hear of your mother's sudden trip to the ER, Jeff. for her and the doctors.
Ken, I got a good chuckle out of your work story of the Prius family (maybe that's a Latin word for 'stupid'?)
Jeffrey, looks like your Apple IIe has a disk drive card and... a Serial Card? Do you recall the "good ol' days" of dial-up BBS'es? Or even GEnie, CompuServe, and menu-driven boards? Thought I was the only one old enough to recall that (most of the time, anyway...) THAT computer does look in good shape, though. As for the new meter box, I guess they want you to think you're getting more for all that money they charge for it... (of course, it looks like there's more space inside the new box, but...)
Galaxy, I think I was introduced to THE exam (cough...cough...) when I went through the AFEES at St. Louis before going to Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Yes, certainly delightful... (NOT!)
YGW - how far away is the nearest "LHS" that carries HO stuff to you? (Or did Curt post that?) Besides my one just south of Cape, the second closest for me would be in St. Louis, or Chuck's Depot over in Marion, IL. There was one place in St. Louis that I used to go to (years ago), bit a number of LHS'es up there aren't around anymore (including some bigger ones, alas).
Barry, our weather today is projected to reach (maybe) the mid-40's, then cool off for the next two days to highs in the 30's (F). You might be getting some of that wind that we had a coupla days ago (and I saw Jeff had some damage from in his area). But we didn't get tree limbs blown down like Jeff had.
One thing I was thankful for, related to our colder nights, was that it likely slowed down certain chemical reactions. Seems when I got up and headed for the car this morning, there was an egg or two (maybe three, hard to tell when they're broken up) on the front of my car. (Wonder who I ticked off? ). Oh yeah, and some frost to scrape off. Took the car by a carwash, since it was above freezing then, and I think I got it all done (did the deluxe, drive-thru kind).
Todd, did I hear you right? You want to get some soup thrown on you? Maybe you need more sleep, man. And I think every MRR has a 'track-checker' loco of some kind, all right.
Almost forgot to say - hang in there with that math, BN24; there will be usefulness to the fractions stuff later on. Just keep pluggin' away!
JaBear - for my clarification and education, did you mean by 'Northern Diners':
A) Diners in the Northern hemisphere (as opposed to where you and - currently - J.R. are?
B) Diners North of the USA-Canada border (e.g., Barry, Johnboy and others)?
C) Diners North of the USA-Mexican border? or
D) Diners who model the Burlington Northern, Great Northern, or BNSF?
(Inquiring minds and all that...) (yeah, I know, nobody likes a smart... aleck!)
BN24 - are you using Adblock on Firefox or Internet Exploder/Explorer (I'm guessing Windows, right)? I think I saw a notification on Firefox on my Mac yesterday that there was some updating of its data set/library/whatchamacallit. But I'm using Adblock Plus (& the Ad Hiding Helper for it), NoScript, and Ghostery to keep out the majority of ads. I think there are likely Windows versions of all of those.
Jeremy, sounds good on the part-time job for the commute - you may get better mileage than Ray's Prius! Will you still be able to keep that job interview you mentioned on Tuesday? Hope so!
Ray, sounds like you did a great job on your Mission Moment at church this morning.
Well, I have a hankering for an Andy's Frozen Yogurt (Butterfinger flavor) concrete, so I'll be off to get that, and hopefully back this evening to hear some better news from Jeff on his mother's progress.
Prayers for all those in need of healing, comfort, new jobs, and better finances, as well as any other needs unspoken.
Blessings,
Jim in Cape G.
Afternoon All,
Well MOH and I tried replacing the burner today. Got it done and there was a large spark and a puff of smoke (after the burner came on like it should) so the breaker is thrown and the stove is OOC until a repairman can fix it (I hope).
After that fiasco I landscaped the 3 hills, cleaned track and tested loco's on the track. The outer loop was no issue. The inner loop there was rubbing. Luckily I was able to shift that portion of the inner track inward and the problem was fixed. The hills turned out nice If I say so myself. I will post pictures later after I plant trees.
Well, I will talk to you guys and gals Wednesday night when I am done with w**k.
Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.
In a bit we will be going out to supper

Good day all!
Hope this finds everyone in good health. to those in need, especially Jeffrey's mom.
Been pretty windy here today. I'm just waitin for the SNOW to start. The NWS says a good 6-8 by this time tomorrow for my area. If the LES aligns the way they're talkin, then I can see that amount if not more here at my house.
Well, I'm off for now.
Have a good day!

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010
I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017
Afternoon folks!
Chloe, I'll have a Reuben sandwich and a hot cup of decaf please.
Ah.... Church went well. The Interim Pastor has recovered from the Flu and did a great job with the service this morning. She did forget to call me up for the Moment for Mission, but I came down anyway... She immediately got up and apologized, saying how could anyone forget Ray! I told the congregation that no-one ever forgets me.... Some people walk out of the room when come in, but nobody ever forgets me! After I got done with my Southern Backwoods Preacher Imitation I got several big grins and some thumbs up from the congregation, so I guess I did a good job with it.
Barry, winds have died down a bit here. Now they are down to 25 to 35mph steady winds with gust only to 50mph. With the wet ground, I am surprised no trees have come down in the area.
Catch you all later!

Hi Guys
Jeff : Sorry to hear about your mom, let us know how she is doing later on.
Well I went to that train show this morning, what a turnout first thing. Wall to wall people and a good selection of merchandise. I was quite surprised. I picked up two 50' boxcars, Like I was saying I before I don't usually make many train show purchases. Saw a few people from around the local hobby shops. I also saw the fellow here that ran a hobby shop here for years but closed up a few years back, It was nice to catch up with him again but it kind of saddened me a bit because I really did enjoy his hobby shop .The wind was still blowing so got a nice hot cup of tea for the ride home. Before I went out the door I got a call about the one job I applied for, I start Tuesday morning. Its only part time for now but its better then nothing until I get full time. I am dropping off a resume at a friends place as they will be hiring full time soon. Well, seeing as I did the housework earlier today I'm going to go relax and build those kits.
Forgot to mention the place is so close that I can step out my front door and look down the street and see it. Literally a two minute walk to work, lol
Good Morning!!!
Coffee and the Sunday Breakfast buffet please. Thanks.
We had our breezy day yesterday, itweren’t nuthin like what you guys are talking about.
Welp, it looks like I’ll be getting up early Tuesday. (chuckle)
Bear- Hm, I still had it wrong, I was thinking like “puck”.
Praying for your Mom Jeffrey.
One of these days, I’m gonna just post a post as it comes out typed the first time. Just to show you how this pint sized keyboard affects my dismal at best typing abilities.
Yesterday, I actually w**ked/played in Toddland (of which I’m king) Yup, not very long, maybe an hour tops, but I did clean the wheels and pickups on the old AHM coffee grinder and cleaned about 3 foot of track to see how it did. It did great. Noisy, but then again it always was. Gonna do some more cleaning of track today. See if I can get all the way around without stalling. Maybe w**k on getting another loco checked out. Been awhile you know. Maybe that little 4-4-0. That thing's as picky as they get. Might just give her another job. Use it as a trackwork checker/tourist train. Tourists make it home by supper.... the track's good.
Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Coffee in a UNDECORATED mug, please.
***Steam353: That doesn't sound promising for a brand new, barely used loco, even if it had been sitting awhile. Wonder if the Shays are any less glitchy?
***Garry, please let me know if you find out anything on Jim's (or anyone elses) Shay or Climax loco(s). Thanks!
Besides removing the little canyon section which will create connection points for the future additions, why not add sidings and such for a small Meat Packing Plant (Soylent Green) at that end of the existing layout instead of having any kind of loop there at all. Maybe I can learn to tear things up and rebuild like Jeffrey does!
Also think there should be a second set of rails along side the existing tracks serving the little train station. At least that way a train stopped there would not be holding up the mainline.
Healing thoughts to those in need.
Cheers! Rob

RE: Climax
I ordered a Bachmann Climax 12/27/11 and let it sit in the box until just before last Christmas. Oldest son visiting form Dallas, Tx wanted to see it run so we got it programmed and it ran like a champ. We only ran it for about 15 minutes. About a week later I wanted to check a couple of track dead spots so I fired up the Climax and it suddenly had a "hitch in it's get-along". Appears to be a bad main gear. Sent it back to Bachmann with documents.Hope they cover it under warranty but I haven't heard back yet. It sure looked and sounded nice while it lasted tho.

Jeffrey, my prayers for your Mother! My prayers for your whole family actually...
Today will be a busy one... I'm on my way over to church in a few minutes to do Ushering duty and give this morning's Moment for Mission. It will be about being the Rock, the Foundation, to help others be able to choose to make better lives for themselves. (Elijah rock, Shout, Shout... Elijah Rock, comin' up Lord...) The MLK Committee here in Geneva has given 102 young people of color scholarships to continue their education since 1975. My church has been part of the Rock, the foundation to make that possible. They are the single largest donator to our work in the community.
Then I have to go to Canandaigua and see how Claude is doing, feed him, change his litterbox, and play for a while. I also have to print out all the certificates for this years Art and Poetry Contest, and maybe go over to my son's house for dinner...
Barry and Dennis... Just had to send that wind over my way didn't you. We are getting gust over 50mph right now!
Later!
Well I just got notified that my mother has been taken to the ER. She's having some kind of respiratory problem. Awaiting word on how that turns out.
Good morning. It's 34° with 100% humidity and patchy fog. It'll be cloudy with a high of 65°.Got some sleep last night. After the weeks of wind and rain and things crashing around it's too darn quiet.Nothing planned for today. Looks like another movie watching day. If I feel like it later I MIGHT work on the grain elevator.

SHH!! "Keep it Under your Hat"!:
Meaning:
Keep it secret.
Origin:
On first hearing this seems a rather strange phrase. Why should people put anything under their hats and, even if they were to, why would that be associated with secrecy? The speculation is that putting an item under one's hat would be a way of hiding it. Such trickery is recorded, as in the collection of stories published as The Adventurer, 1793:
"By a sudden stroke of conjuration, a great quantity of gold might be conveyed under his hat."
The most commonly repeated speculation of the origin of this expression is that English archers in mediaeval times used to store spare bowstrings under their hats to keep them dry. That's as likely as another fanciful story about English bowmen - that the French chopped off the fingers of any English archers captured during the Hundred Years' War and that the English archers made defiant two-fingered V-signs to the French army at Agincourt to show that they still had their fingers and were ready to fire. Later wits have elaborated on the yarn to include the story that the archers also shouted 'pluck yew' (English longbows are made of yew wood) - a neat pun but complete nonsense.
Let's just get that bowstring under the hat tale out of the way:
- Firstly, keeping dry isn't keeping secret, so even if archers did store strings under their hats, and there's no evidence that they did, where is the connection to the phrase's meaning? - Secondly, and it would have been kinder to put this first as it entirely dismisses the archer tale, the phrase isn't known in English until the 19th century - so much for a mediaeval origin.
What else, apart from gold and string, might one keep under one's hat? One's head, of course. The phrase didn't derive from putting anything under one's hat at all - 'under your hat' simply meant 'in your head'. That's the meaning alluded to in early citations of the phrase in print. The oldest of such that I can find is in the novel The History of Pendennis by William Makepeace Thackeray, 1848:
Thus, oh friendly readers, we see how every man in the world has his own private griefs and business... You and your wife have pressed the same pillow for forty years and fancy yourselves united. Psha, does she cry out when you have the gout, or do you lie awake when she has the toothache? ... Ah, sir - a distinct universe walks about under your hat and under mine.
The extended phrase 'keep it under your hat', which didn't arise until the 20th century, simply meant 'keep it in your head', that is, 'think it, but don't say it'. An early example is found in P. G. Wodehouse's Inimitable Jeeves, 1923:
It made such a hit with her when she found that I loved her for herself alone, despite her humble station, that she kept it under her hat. She meant to spring it on me later. The prayer candles will be lit for those in need Do a GOOD DEED for someone today!!!

Good Evening All,
The day didn't start off so promising but after the morning drizzle stopped and the clouds burned off it was great weather. The racing went well, we finished 3rd in all four and won all four with the other car. The CFO and I go back to the track tomorrow to clean and prep the cars for next weekend and with luck have a couple of days to tour. It's late here but very early home. I'm off for now. CUL, J.R.
Evening All, An iced chocolate would go down really nice right now, balmy Sunday evening , currently 70 F, 58% humidity, topped out at 81 F today thank goodness for a breeze.
Hopefully J.R. had a good day at the track to go with the weather.
TMarsh J.R.- Pukka huh. Well that’s not exactly what I would have guessed. Wonder if they changed the way it was pronounced, like they did the planet Uranus, or the dog Shih tzu. Too many 5th graders giggling.

Todd. "Puke" can also be pronounced as "Pooke".
Pukekohe is a Maori word, Maori being New Zealands' second language, "Puke" means hill, and the kohekohe is a NZ native tree of the mahogany family, so "Pukekohe" means "Hill where the Kohekohe tree grows".
Hope the Northern Diners have a great Sunday.
