man, I have a terrible temper. I honestly dislike fractional math so much, especially when there is no common denominator. " oh here x= this but we'll throw a wrench in the works with a number that will not be divisible." grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

 Evening Folks

 Flo Beer Pleases.

Work Sucked, Trains Suck tonight as well. Well the B Main line is running fine.

Rob as far as fight the bacteria infested carpet, I have a plan. My stocking feet will never touch it again! I all so pulled out the inserts from my Diabetic shoes and wiped them down with alcohol, wiped down the inside as well. Had my wife wash my slipper so they are clean on the inside.

Jeremy, how much time do you spend a month on the aquarium? When I was into fish big time I had around 10 tanks, I was breeding fish as well. So I might have spent 3 hours a month, if that. On the last house tank, a 55 gallon I cleaned the filters (have 2 of them) maybe every 3 months and it took around 15 minutes for both.

Here is a neat little trick depending on the filter you have. I put the carbon in a pair of my wife used pantyhose and tie a knot in the end. Pull out the filter fluff, throw it away, wash the carbon, stuff it back in and stuff back in fresh filter fluff and I was done!

On my 55 gallon, the two filters would pump 400 gallons a hour so it stayed clear.

YGW Thanks for asking about the toe, far as PM you the details of my plight, pretty boring stuff. Just glad to see you back in the dinner! Yes

 See you all later

Chamomile tea, please.

Another inquiry, any of you have experience with the Bachman Spectrum 3-truck Climax w/DCC & sound? It is one loco I could certainly see bringing logs down from the mountains to the mill on my next layout. Pros and Cons welcomed. Thanks!

Have a good night all.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf please.

Been a long and busy day.  We got all the art and poetry entries picked up and transported to one of the churches where we had our final meeting tonight for the MLK Celebration locally.  Sorted all the entries and got them bagged up for the judges.  Then I realized I hadn't printed out the first, second and third place ribbons (paper actually) to mark the winners when they display them...  So I drove home, printed them quickly and got back for the meeting about 5 minutes before it started.

My sister's cat is a character to say the least.  He went right to his almost empty food dish as soon as I got there.  Then he rolled over on the floor knocking over a bowl of water he has and making a mqjor puddle on the floor.  He celebrated by rolling in the puddle of water.  Never have seen a cat before that actually likes getting a bath....  My sister says he climbs in the shower with her in the morning!  Anyway, I cleaned up the floor, then removed his toy from his food dish, gave him fresh food.  He then decides to run as fast as he can all over the main floor of the house being pretty much airborne most of the time.  He can jump close to 15 feet from the top of one piece of furniture to the other...

Blackie seems to be a bit better tonight.  Hope he recovers completely from whatever is wrong with him.  Still purrs loudly when ever I get near him.  He is on the floor just a few feet from my computer at the moment after spending most of the day in his chair in front of the aquarium...  Yep I have a couple aquariums myself.  The one with two old fish left in it is a 29 gal. and the empty one waiting to get set back up (probably this spring) is a 55 gal.  Years ago I raised tropical fish for a wholesaler in the Southern Tier of NYS.  I had two breeding pairs of angelfish and for a few years was wholesaling 500 young angelfish at 25¢ each every month (back then the same sized fish cost a $1 at the retail stores).  I also bred several other varieties in a pretty good quantity to sell.  Used to buy Tetramin flakes in a 10lb. barrel....  Then would sell bags of a few oz. each to local hobbyists.  I made some good spending money on the hobby back then.  At one point I had 21 tanks of tropical fish in a room (where I also taught private guitar) down cellar in our house in Waverly, NY.

Going to be another busy day tomorrow so I best head out to bed.

Prayers to all in need.

Well, due to the rain we got a falling tree did a good job of kicking my anthill over. I should be moved back into it by this time tomorrow provided the electrician shows up as planned and there aren't any problems. Got an appointment in the morning for a prostate exam. I hope to get that wrapped up quickly. I'm staying the night at my fathers place so not too uncomfortable.

Well time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Good evening ....

Ulrich ..... Prayers for your entire family. Your Dad, your Mom, your Sister, and Yourself are having too many health problems.

Ken .... I'm sorry to ehar about your toe infection. It's remakrable how clean-looking carpet can have bacteria coming from the dog. I wonder what can be done. I doubt you want to shampoo the carpet daily.

Rob ..... I have one each of the Proto 2000 Heritage switchers (0-6-0 and 0-8-0), and they are outstanding models. Well worth the extra money.

CDN Dennis .... The ceiling will be a big improvemnt. Looks like you are doing quality work.

Galaxy ...... I'm a golfer but rarely play anymore.

Curt ..... Holy scenery! .... Your working hard on the layout I see.

YGW ..... I hear you about the spending. The growth rate of spending exceeds the long term growth rate of the economy. Therefore, revenues can not grow fast enough to keep up. The spread between the spending growth rates and the slower revenue growth rates explains why debt grows. Can't say more because it would get political.

Cheers, everybody!

Evening folks. Just a decaf please Flo. Real coffee at this time of night keeps me awake all night and I have enough trouble sleeping as it is. This Seniors thing is a royal pain in more ways than one.

Busy day again with a furniture shopping trip this morning. I hate to admit it but the coffee table MOH picked out was Really Cool. You see, we tend to eat dinner in front of the tv. This coffee table looks like a normal coffee table but at the touch of a leaver the top rises up and extends toward the sofa. Voila - instant table.

On the RR room front, I finally got all the lights wired and installed into the ceiling tracks. Now I can put the rest of the tiles in... well, there are those two heat registers that have to be dropped down to the ceiling level. I will maybe get it finished by Saturday...Smile, Wink & Grin

Lets see, oh yah, got my order from Micro Mark today! I got another order earlier in the week that I thought was from Micro Mark but obviously, it was something else I ordered and had forgotten about. Haven`t opened either one yet so the mystery one will be a surprise Confused Who knows QuestionWhistling

So, that is my story for today and I`m sticking to it Time to go read a book.

PBJ sandwich on gluten free bread, please.

***C.N.Charlie, I have a Proto 0-8-0 in N scale and it is one of the few I plan on keeping, just because it is such a beauty in both detailing and smooth running. Love that little loco. My biggest disappointment was the N scale Proto Berkshire. Incredible looks, broke down shortly after I got it and Walthers wanted way to much $$$ to fix it. As for the Walthers 0-8-0 (in HO), it looks like a winner, but I sure would hate to get a lemon and have to ask them to fix it. Might risk it anyway and pick one up as my main switcher for the new layout. Sure looks terrific and sounds nice in the video clips I've pulled up.

Yeah Galaxy I have heard that they can live a while. If they die they die nothing I can do about that. I just don't want to neglect the tank and there living conditions. I have one now that looks like it might not make it past the weekend I feel bad watching him slowly die but I dont think there is alot that can be done for a goldfish. Like I said the tank looks great when its nice and clean but when it starts to get dirty it looks gross. No more fish for me after these ones. More work then enjoyment for me.

Not much layout or train work today, I had a couple people call about a interview for next week. NHL starts back up this weekend so that is good.

***Curt, who is the guilty little person who chopped down that tree on your layout? Or is one of them going to make a whole lot of firewood for his little house?Laugh Neat layout you're building there.Yes

One of my friends made a comment that both gave me a chuckle and made me realize, he is entirely correct. He pointed out: "You have the whole house!" Now there's a thought for a massive layout, huh.MischiefLaugh

As for aquariums, in the past I had more tanks than I care to remember, mostly cichlids. Largest tank was 185Gal and took very little care. From my experience, the smaller the tank, more work they are. Don't miss having them, any more than keeping reptiles which I did half a lifetime ago, also.

Will be in the corner booth awhile.Cowboy Rob

Good Evening,

A balmy -7F here in Winterpeg right now but at least the wind isn't blowing.

Rob, you asked about PK2 0-8-0. I don't have a Walthers version but I have one built by Life Like and it is the smoothest loco I have. Runs like the proverbial Swiss watch. If Walthers still builds them that way then they are worth the money. Detail is great too. Mine was DC so I had to add a decoder. I'm using a Loksound which is great. I also have a PK2 0-6-0 and it runs just like the 0-8-0. I like switchers as I also have 3 diesel, all PK2.

Smoke, well I have personal experience as my True Line Trains Northern has a smoke unit. Over Christmas I decided to try it out. The fan noise was a little annoying and yes it did puff according to the chuff but boy does it stink!  The smell of burning oil prompted me to turn it off after a couple of laps.

Not much new here. I decided to see if my N scale locos would all go up the grade and even after completely re-doing it last year, the first loco I tried, a Model Power Mike couldn't do it with 5 cars behind. I started to panic so I tested all of them. Of 2 MP Pacifics one struggled with 6 cars but the other hauled 8 with nary a slip. Go figure. The Trainmaster was the champ, 13 cars like they weren't there. The biggest surprise was the little PK2 0-8-0 that is very light and supposedly can barely pull 6 cars on the flat. Well it pulled those 6 up the hill without any wheel spin. I plan on buying some of that Bull Frog Snot as a few need a little help.

Time for supper so I'll say so long for now.

Rob wrote: "How stinky does it get from running HO locos with operating smoke units in them? The Cave where I want to build the new layout has no windows, hence it's nickname."

ROB: to answer that question...it Stinks very much!!!! It is really bad for people like me who have breathing problems {asthma very bad}. It is an oil you are burning and you wouldn't want something like your oil furnace's exhaust {or your cars, for that matter, burning a distillate of oil} into your house, now would you? No

A smoker with just a Little {Just a tinch} may not be too bad, but a lot or long running with the smoke...*cough* *choke* *cough* *cough*...I about want to die when I go to a train show and some moron has his smoker going!!!

Jeremy B-Fish tanks, eh? I've had as many as 7 going at once {I raised baby fish-Platys} AND a saltwater going. But we have now decided that enough is enough..once the tank cleaners are dead, we are throwing out the {next to } last tank. We still have on 30 gal waiting for a new home...I need to put an add in the paper... We raised all kinds and found it a many hour consuming project and costly.....Thank goodness i could trade the babies for the necessary supplies.... I wouldn't have another though. Good luck waiting for the GOldfish to die..did he tell you they can live  up to 50 years? you could have them for quite awhile ....

Well...off to bed soon.

See you inthe AM...

Evening All,

Ran some errands today and swept the floor.

On the layout I added some power feeders on a 2 track siding (meat packing/ice house area). Previously I had to have the entrance turnout open to the siding to get  power. I fixed it so I can run on the inner main and switch at the same time. I also built a cardboard framework around the just finished track work and painted the "rocks" I will be using.

Tomorrow I'm going to the downtown hobby shop for landscaping materials. I received a gift card from them for Christmas.

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

Anybody here have a Aquarium???

When we moved into this house a few years ago the previous owner left his goldfish tank with the fish I might add. I didn't want them at all as I didn't want to have to clean up after them and have never been a fish person. The previous owner had about 15 of them which is now down to six plus a algae eater ( one looks like it may croak soon though ). Im surprised that they have lived this long seeing as I had no idea on how to take care of them. We tried to call him right after but he would never return out call so we decided we would care for them until they died. I just got done cleaning the tank and I'm more positive then ever WE WILL NEVER GET MORE FISH EVER !!!!,lol. Fish to me are one of those things that you see other peoples tanks and say " Wow that looks cool " but once you have a tank you realize how much work they are, and I just have a 50 Gal.

Jeff - what in the world are you doing ? That electric issue sounds pretty dangerous. Why didnt the breaker kick ?

Because it wasn't a short, just bad contact. The cords weren't even warm. Power drains do weird things.

*

*

Well if I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all. I've been put out of my home -- for today at least. Thanks to all the rain we've had of late a tree fell over onto my electrical service line and arced out the meter base. The offending tree has been removed and has a date with one of my nephews weekend bonfires. But the meter box still must be repaired. The ground cable was yanked and did a good impression of an arc welder before it lost contact. The power company sent a guy out to pull the meter and cut the lines so it can be repaired. Ten years ago I could have done the work myself but getting up on a ladder now is entirely too dangerous! We have an electrician coming out to put a new cable down from the weather head but that won't be until sometime tomorrow. I'll spend the night at my fathers place tonight. At least I'm able to keep my fridge going. I ran a 100 foot heavy extension cord over to my nephews place, with his permission of course.

Tomorrow morning I have to go to DeRidder for a prostate exam. Oh joy! Well I can think of worse ways to waste my time.

At the moment I'm using the computer I keep down here. It's somewhat slower than the one at my home, in fact a lot slower and has a hard time doing several things at once without coming to a near standstill (Ebox board with dual Celeron D processors). Can you say snail? One of the reasons I stopped using it. I just keep it around in case I might need it and to order health stuff for my father. Yeah, he's a vitamin nut! Takes them every day and is healthy as a horse.

Thanks for sorting that GOLF thing out for me Galexy Surprise I thought the Gentlemen only thing was true because given how men thought way back when and all the Gentlemen Only Clubs in England it just made sense to me. Come to think of it a lot of men still think that way.Hmm

Coffee refill, please.

After reading comments around the Internet on smoke units, seems they are best left "off" except for special occasions. Main reason seems to be an oily residue build up on the track and layout over time. The smell of the old Lionel Hudson we ran around the Christmas tree never bothered me, although as child nothing so cool looking would have had anything other than a positive effect on me. Sooo, guess I will follow the general advice given and only run smoke when family or lady friends are visiting.

Continued healing thoughts to those in need, including 4-legged family members.

Hello all

Semi slow day at w@@k, calm before the storm. Sales are brisk , they have stopped sales twice and raised prices , we are now up to 1.7 million for a single family house (started at 1.5) on less than an acre. Thanks for sending all of your tax dollars to Washington. Obama/congress is spending it faster than it is coming in and the beltway is ringed with Gov. and contract workers who are getting fat at your expense in an unparalled feeding frenzy. No chevies here. Just mercededes, escalades, lexus's etc.. One good thing is they are selling the homes at a fast pace (4 since opening sales a week ago ) and I am employeed until you all or china runs out of money to borrow.

Curt, Blown out Cylinder - thanks for the prayers please continue. My kids (me at times too ) are still struggling at times

Ken - You can PM me if you feel like it. How is your toe today? My prayers go out to you on the job/foot. When the economy crashed I was laid off for about a year and half. Had to work at some awful places. Geez between that and my wife dieing my life wasnt worth living for a while. Only thing I can say is one day it will get better. That light at the end of the tunnel sometimes really is just that a light and not always the train bowling towards you again

Ray - hope your kitty gets better. Our pets can mean as much as family to us.

Jeff - what in the world are you doing ? That electric issue sounds pretty dangerous. Why didnt the breaker kick ?

Ulhrich - Sorry to hear about teh difficulties with your dads health and the need for assisted living. That can be so tough to go through. Will lift your family up in prayer.

Hey guys

Finally got to painting those Bachmann NE12 cabooses into BN colors. I went yellow, then green, then silver. That turned out to be a bad idea because on 2 of the 3 cabooses, the silver crazed the green that was on the roof. Ugh. I'll see if I can smooth it out with some sandpaper when it dries. If not it has to into the alcohol bath. I think next time I'll go silver, green, then yellow. The yellow and silver covers very well (it even cover black nicely) but the green doesn't do so well. That and masking the roof would be easier than masking the green parts.

Rob, IMO the smoke unit stink. Even the scented ones stink. It smells like something electrical burning.

Ulrich, Hope all goes well with your dad.

Barry, one of the local radio stations does weather reports every 15 minutes. Their advanced forcast is usually wrong, but they always rectify it as the day goes on. lol

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Mornin'.... er, ah, afternoon folks!

Zoe, I'll have the turkey club sandwich for lunch and a cup or two of dark roast coffee to wash it down with.  Thanks!

Been out and around running some errands this morning and didn't get in here earlier.

Ulrich, glad to hear your dad is doing better!  It sure would be nice if they could find and assisted living center nearby where you live.  I know how bad my sister who lived in South Bend IN felt that she could not be closer to help my Mom out when she was in assisted living.  Luckily she had my other sister and myself nearby.  I would get up to see her every 2 or 3 days.  She would often say, "Oh, there you are!  Where have you been, I haqven't seen you in such a long time...."  I would tell her I was there just 2 days earlier...  She woukld give me a strange look and say, you were?

I am just about out the door to head to my sister's house to take care of Claude.  I need to get back to Geneva in time to pick up Art and Poetry Entries from the two elementary schools here in Geneva and take them to a church top start sorting them....  That will be followed by a meeting of the MLK Committee to go over last minute details for the March, Service, and Dinner on Monday.  Going to be a busy few days!

Later!

Extra strong coffee in a  UNDECORATED  mug, please.

Looking at that HO layout and contemplating starting over is sorta depressing. I did put a lot of effort into that thing, learning along the way what does and doesn't work, too.

How stinky does it get from running HO locos with operating smoke units in them? The Cave where I want to build the new layout has no windows, hence it's nickname.

One (perhaps) nice thing about devoting solely to HO scale is the opportunity to shed numbers of trains for fewer, higher quality (I hope) locomotives. One or two for heavy freight, one (maybe two) passenger trains, and perhaps a couple small locos for switching duties. That's it, no more. And one of the passenger locos could run double duty as a freight loco. Quality over quantity.

Along that vein, limit road crossings so they can be animated (without going bankrupt), and have more plain warning signs at crossings (no gates or lights), like what I encountered last time I chased a full scale mixed freight out of Fairmount.

OK, have rambled on enough. Hope y'all have a good day!
