Hey guys
Not been up to a whole lot recently. Just been working a lot more.
Yesterday I took my 2 C425s and 2 U28Bs to try to run them (I speed matched them with my zephyr). Well the sound/dcc U28B and the non-sound C425 were the only ones that worked. That C425 rocked when switching directions, the other C425 had both motor wires disconnect, and the U28B has some issue with the decoder (aside from the LED for the mars light breaking it's wires). Got them home and fixed them. I just ran my usual SD45s and F45s, except with the SD45s on the ends due to them have LEDs and working beacons.
I'm looking at a set of 27 BN coal cars (MDC bathtub gons; half built with kadees and metal wheels) and would like to have dummy couplers to use as a unit train. I have a few accurail dummy couplers and like them. I wonder if anyone here any of these they want to send my way?
As for why 27 of the same type cars; I'd like to have a string of around 30-45 of the same type of cars and kits are much cheaper than RTR ($20 a car or so vs $5). I have 13 MDC BN 3-bays and 6 Walther's 100-ton quads, then a bunch of other road stuff. I'd love to have a bunch of BN MDC thrall gons, but they seem hard to find now.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Hi Guys and Gals,
Well holidays are over and we have returned home. Had a great time in Springfield, Mo. and Branson and Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
Great weather and clear roads right until the time we arrived home, and while unloading it started to snow.
Picked up some goodies along the way, a Herzog gondola, a Vulcan hopper, and the Walthers anniversary Box car, also found an old Campbell model of the Mail Pouch Barn. Hadn't seen one of them in a while.
Between Jamestown and Minot ND., coming home we saw a train of about 30 Herzog gondolas, I had never run across one in real-time before. So that was neat.
My heart really goes out to those impacted by "Sandy", and that's not my Wife. I hope they get things back to a relatively normal state for you folks soon.
Ulrich, take care good Buddy, we want you back on the active list real soon.
Paul, Prayers continue for your Wife, and Barry for you too.
Garry, Safe travels and good roads for you.
Jeff, take it easy there. You can't be everything for everybody. You have to take care of yourself first to be able to be of assistance to your folks and your Father should know that.
Well, I turned the big 72 yesterday, and I will be going home from work here shortly to a nice Birthday Supper done up by my wife and will have one Son and DIL and Grandson with me to celebrate. I have had calls from all my Sons yesterday and some former work mates today. So I feel well remembered and Thankful to have made it this far as a lot of other former friends and workmates haven't been so fortunate and have turned in their spurs long before this age.
I'm sure admiring some great modelling and photography here, you guys are my heroes. Thanks for all the motivation.

A Dr. Pepper for me please. Business on the east coast has been a mess for me in recent days. There are some yards working. Some others have crews out helping the clean up the hearder hit areas. The mess that the rail systems there are in is unbelievable! There will not be any trains - except a wreck train or so - going over those rails in the near future to be sure. Here on the home front all is quiet. I did manage to stub my right big toe on a chair leg. That raised some hairs on my head and made me say unpleasant things but no lasting damage was done.
David Parks I am the terror that flaps in the night!
Evening All,
MOH is in the kitchen making supper so I am staying out of the way. I think we are having chicken tonight although I really feel like a coffee right now.
I painted the 2 castings of PRR signs that I have from Odd Duck foundry. He has 3 more I would like to get. I had to paint it white 4 times to get good coverage. I also took apart the PL lamp. The front lens is in great shape-thankfully because I probably could not replace it. The mirror will need striped and re-chromed as it's pretty bad and the metal parts are very bad. I went to the store and got some wire striping wheels. I figure it will take several weeks to get it done properly but it should be awesome when finished.
Ulrich- Take care of yourself. I am worried about you.

Burlington Northern #24just out of curiosity where are you modeling BN?
I don't have a layout yet, and it's hard to pick. I'm leaning to the areas of Colorado (the joint line), Montana (Marias, Mullan, and a few other famous areas), Idaho (Sandpoint), Washington (Stevens Pass and the Cascades). I do like the BN in Illinois as well (racetrack and Rochelle), but Alcos were usually limited to the pacific northwest.
As for era, I'm thinking 1976-1986. I can have Alcos and Fs, but still have SD60s GP50s, and the first doublestack cars.

In our area, Trick or Treating was delayed until last night due to "Sandy." We had 123 kids show up, of which about 10 were older kids. But that's okay because it doesn't bother me. In fact, all of them had costumes, and most showed a lot of imagination. The wife and I really enjoy the tiny tots though. they really are in awe of all that's going on.
We went railfanning this afternoon, but did it sitting in the car. The temperatures were in the low 40's. That's a little too brisk for me to sit in our camp chairs. The first hour wasn't too bad with 4 trains, but the second hour we only got to see 1 additional intermodal. Still, it wasn't too bad.
We had a nice chuck roast, mashed potatoes with gravy and green beans for dinner. All accompanied with a bottle of Reisling from Seneca Lake. The wife nailed the gravy tonight, so I had about 4 slices of gravy bread for dessert. Feeling kind of full and satisfied right about now.
Hope everybody had a great weekend. I truly feel sorry for those who suffered, and continue to suffer, from the storm. Tom

Curt WebbHere are my "dogs on the layout"
Curt, I used to have a neighbor who had a real live skunk for a pet. He was just like a big loving *** cat! Used to get a real kick out of people waking past and noticing a skunk sitting on the lawn
Been a busy day for me. Started the day out rather early because our furry 4 footed alarm clock doesn't seem to be able to be set back an hr. Sigh!
After some cereal I got busy and sanded out the drywall on the 10 by 12 house addition I'm finally finishing up. Then I put the second coat of mud on... I hate this stage of the building process. Hurry up and wait. Oh well.
After that, I went over to a friends and helped him set up a new computer program and the assorted hardware. Then he wanted me to show him how to use it. Sometimes it doesn't pay to know what you are doing on computers. Oh well, he's a good old guy so what the heck.
Came home and MOH asked me to take down the Halloween decorations since it was "such a nice day" so I did that then headed down to the layout and cut a bunch of 2 inch foam for the yard area. Glued it down and hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to glue the final layer down and that will be done with. I decided to redesign and expand the rail yard because I needed more room for the round house and turntable. Better now before I start laying tracks. I suppose I'll have to assemble the turntable soon so I can space things out properly.
On a final note WE HAD A WHOLE DAY OF SUNSHINE TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! First sun we've seen in two weeks. Sure puts people in a better mood when the sun is out. Everybody was getting pretty snarly without the sun. Taint natural to have no sun in Sunny Alberta this time of year.
Well, MOH is calling supper down the stairs so best I go fill my face.
Good thoughts to all in need.

Woof!
Day is starting to catch with me now! Work Front as a whole was uneventful. That means it was a low stress day, but all so low commissions as well.
Todd, not sure if the CFL I bought is a Daylight one, but it sure has lighten up the desk area. While I did not like paying $15.49 for it, it has done what I hoped for.
Lee, I for see a boat sale coming from the photo link you posted! I wounder how much for the Sea Ray will go for sitting on the rails will go for!
Dennie's Curt has real skunks as well as pets! Brings the cute little stickers in the dinner all the time! He claims they are descanted.
Shaddy " Bark, Bark, Bark Woof and Bark ".
No Shaddy, the dinner does not serve cat as a desert, and keep it down many of my friends here have cats as pets!

I had dinner at my parents place today. Pork chops, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, onions. It was a good meal. I was lucky to get down there and back too. I've been having a lot of trouble getting around today. Very unsteady. Guess I've been pushing too hard, then these recent emergencies didn't do me any good either. In my trailer it's not much of a problem because I have the walls and other things for support. But outside or in a large open room it can become a very real problem. The basic problem is my sense of balance is shot. Has been since I was two years old. If I lose the horizon I can become disoriented. A pitch black room is a place I don't want to be! Sometimes it gets really aggravated. That's exactly what's been happening today. I fell three times while I was there, twice to my knees and once fell over backward flat on my back. Fortunately it doesn't bother me when I'm sitting down, only when I'm standing. If it follows it's usual pattern I might as well stay in bed tomorrow for all the good I'll be to anyone.Speaking of bed that's where I'm headed now. See y'all whenever.

Folks, I am now officially an armchair mrr - the layout has to come down and the only activity will be its dismemberment. This does not make me super joyful, but at some point in a distant place an area may be cleared for some kind of a layout. Can't even say I'll stay in Normal Scale because my eyes are finally "going the way of all the earth" - I had to build my latest project - the 18Pounder WWI Field Gun for our museum, its carriage limber, and the #5 detachment member entirely with my reading glasses; and that's a first for me.
Anyway, since it's now done and on display in the museum, here's how it turned out. Scale is 1:72 - so not quite S and not quite HO....
That's the Ordenance, which was super-detailed from a basic EMHAR kit. I scratch built the limber using the carriage and wheels from a second gun in the kit, and a ton of help from the folks on a WWI Forum
and finally, the guy who got to carry the shells, Detachment member #5
That one was a simple paint job once I'd carved away the entrenching tool from his back and relieved him of a side-arm I'm sure he wouldn't have been entitled to!
All this, and a continuing house hunt in Pictou and getting this house ship shape within and without for (hopefully) selling in the Spring has kept me away - but I thought I'd just drop by and say hello.
Cheers, John.

Wait, there's more. Looking back a page I saw a comment about the state of the railroads post-Sandy. This was sent me today:
Evenin' folks!
Janie a cup of decaf for me and get John (Derr) what ever he wants... Thanks.
John good to see you in here! Hope all goes well withy finding a new house and the sale of your present one. I know somehow you will find a space to still have those trains around!
Been an interesting day here. I got out the door in plenty of time to got out to the museum in time for crew call... Got about a mile up the road and noticed the low air pressure light was on for one of the tires... Turned around, drove back home, got out the compressor, found the extension cord, and then spent 15 minutes looking for the air pressure gauge. It was in the coat pocket of the coat I was wearing... Must be getting old I think. Little white things were busy falling out of the sky by the tome I got out there. I was not looking forward to being the caboose I assumed would not have the heater back working in.... Asked the OD what he wanted me to do and he said I could spend at least part of the day on the Erie caboose depending on need and who else showed. That is the one I was expecting to have no heat. Climbed on board to find the doors were both shut, opened one to have a nice blast of hot air greet me... YES! Heat in both cabooses and the wood stove going in the Depot!
Had a good sized crowd for a gloomy snowy and cold day. There were a couple of parties at the other museum which helped a lot. Last ride down the line I had 30 people squeezed into the old Erie caboose. I left after the 3:30 run to Industry so I don't know the total for today. They played, "Tag, you're it" and one of the student engineers got to replace me for the last few trips. I headed home to get to my DILs Birthday Party. She will be turning 29 tomorrow. Again, just like the last 13 years now...
Got home to find the main furnace had quit... pilot light was out again. This time one of the burners had worked its way off the orifice it is on and the resultant "PHOOM" had blown out the pilot. The old furnace has done this a couple times in the past (I may have knocked it off putting the front back on after I lit the pilot a couple days ago). This is probably its last year of service so I will watch it carefully. I would like to replace it with a high efficiency type and add whole house air conditioning at the same time. We shall see.
Have to be at my son's house by 8:45 tomorrow AM to go to school. It seems that Granddaughter #1 havs won some award that is being presented to her tomorrow.... Have no idea what it is, but I'm sure she is deserving. After all she is MY granddaughter you know!
Prayers for in need! Yes that means you...

A 50 percent chance of rain or drizzle, mainly before noon. Cloudy, with a high near 48.
Hard to believe it’s the 5th of November already and Thanksgiving is just a couple weeks away. Man. Seems like just a couple days ago the temps were on their way up, now they’re on their way down.
Looks like I’ll mow second half of the week. Needs it bad and it’s suppose to be in the sixties so that’ll be comfy I suppose. Hopefully It’ll be the last mow of the year. Should be.

Ken- (Spews coffee. (cough, cough)) 15 (cough) $15?! Whoa. Daylights here are like $8 for four or five. Six maybe. Depends where you get ‘em and the brand. 15 bucks for one? We must be talking different type of bulb for your desk.
DerJohn- Good to see you again! Best of luck on the house hunt and you know layout or no layout, stop in as much as you can.
Didn’t get the shower done as much as planned, Brenda you know. For someone who wants this thing done, she sure takes me away from it a lot. Wanted to go in town to eat and then Walmart. That killed the afternoon. But I did learn something. Fortune cookise are true. Yup. Have proof. Gloomy and cloudy all day yesterday. Finished dinner bout oh 2 and opened fortune cookie. Looked around out the windows and made some comment about couldn't be more wrong. Fortune said..."Sunny day outside today." I know, I know, not a fortune, but neither is "don't spend money ond someday you'll be rich". Brenda snuffed and said it seems sunny in here for you. She was a bit miffed that the waitress, instead of asking what I wanted to drink, said "Mr Pibb for you?" She's getting kinda worse lately. See Brenda has always been a jealous person (for no reason mind you) but lately it's fired back up again. Must be the big 50. And the fact that most people say I look younger than 50, Saturday night a guy we know casually, said he thought she was 56. Why do women ask men, "how old you you think I am". Just because he may have said in response to something you said regarding you age, "well, how old are you?" Do not set yourself up by saying "how old do you think I am." Then when they say "oh I don't know, I can't judge age." don't say "Oh take a guess."
But I digress, as soon as we walked out the door, well got to the car actually, the sun came out. drove to wallyworld (practically next door) in sunshine. Did that thing and sometime the sun had to go away cause as we were walking toward the exit Brenda mantioned well that didn't last long as it was cloudy and dull again. But as we walked halfway to the car..... the sun came out again and shone all the way home. Too bad those lotto numbers on the back don't work.
Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good Morning All,
36F this morning and partly cloudy - the high fast moving ones again. We should have a noreaster right after I depart for Daytona. I will not be the CFO's favorite person.
Long weekend in the shop and at home finishing up the minor repairs from Sandy. My engine man is not as happy. He is in NYS and still is without power probably until the 11th. Con Ed in fact hasn't yet turned off power to the downed wires on his street. My repairs were easy. A couple of window sills from where two improperly latched windows blew open and I had all the tools and material needed left over from the house rebuild. The modular super insulatng windows may need a rethink if we get a real storm. Our gusts were only up to 70MPH.
Good to hear from Der John. Sad to hear he needs to disassemble his layout and move. Of interest is the pic he posted on page 9 of the boat across the tracks. That shot is just north of my old place of employment - Bob Akin Motor Racing in Ossining, NY. We were across the street from Hudson Wire, with tracks directly behind us and then a road with a marina and chandlery. The boat must have come from the marina courtesy of the storm surge. All that about 15 miles north of NYC on the Hudson River. Wonder if the building made it. The shop has since moved out to Clinton Corners adn the wire plant moved to Ga some years ago, still, a decade of memories there
Prayers for those in need and on the mend. CUL, J.R.
Good morning. It's 58° with 100% humidity and dense fog. There's a slight chance of rain this morning and a fair chance this afternoon. The high is expected to be 75°.Today I'm having as much trouble as I expected to have. My balance is really messed up and my left knee is numb. I can get around inside my trailer well enough but it's slow going. Forget about going outside. I wouldn't even be able to get down the steps. Whatever my father needs help with today he's going to have to find somebody else to do it or handle it himself. If I feel up to it later I may be able to do a little cleanup work on the layout. For now it's back to the bed.

Vincent, If you pick any of the Stevens Pass, Sandpoint, or Montana areas, you will have lots of operations possibilities. We were not thinking operations when we built ours and made changes afterwards. We used 3rd planit software to plan ours. Have fun in the journey.
der, I was wondering what you were doing with your large layout. It is sad when you have to dismantle such a large effort. If we had to tear ours down it would surely be discouraging.

Ray, I was told by my HVAC guy to watch out for the furnaces that rely completely on printed circuit boards because that can be hard to replace sometimes.
Ken, the RR just might pay you to take it off their hands, LOL.
John, that’s too bad about the layout. I wish you luck in house hunting. Is the housing and home loan situation better in Canada than down here in the States?

LSWrr: It's pretty hard not to have electronics in a furnace nowadays. Everything is computer controlled. Our furnace quit working last year and had to have the circuit board replaced. That was about a $250 hit. Ouch! At least I didn't have to pay for the service call. It was covered under the maintenance contract but the board wasn't. Gotta watch out for what isn't covered under guarantees, warrantees and maintenance contract these days. In order to save (or make?) money companies are cutting back on what's covered. And of course they make things so complicated that the user doesn't have a chance of fixing them himself.

And WHO says "FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION"????
I complained LOUDLY recently about a brand new furnace installed Aug 30th, 2011 That when attempted to be brought into service a month after the one year warrantee was up here in 2012 failed this past September when attempting to bring it into service one chilly morning, that required one new EACH: pressure switch, a new induced draft motor and a new igniter to the tune of $1,025.00 !!!! That is 25% of what the furnace cost me brand new last year!!!
I was nto a happy camper. the furnace man {who didn't look old enough to drive} siad that this name brand for mobile homes is noted for such!
Funny, the old same name brand furnace lasted 28 years, serving us well, AND was converted form Oil to Nat gas. Had we been able to get parts for it last winter before, we wouldn't have replaced it last summer.
Sigh, I don't expect this one to last as long as the old one did....
suppose, I'll check in. I found some interesting information on my Alco RS1 SP&S #50, the 1:1 version was stationed in vancouver's yard and carried three different schemes during it's service life. it was also never equipped with MU capabilities,it also survived a fire. found a picture of it.
Mornin' good people!

It is cold and dark gray outside with no sunshine at all AGAIN! Little bitty white granules have been floating down around here from time to time. Since it is 35°F outside none of it is sticking, but it does add to the gloomy look out there.
Have a lot of stuff that has to get done today before the inspectors get here tomorrow. Catch you all later!
