Hey y'all! Cowboy

Yesterday was good. Got the starter/generator on the Cub. It used to crank slow if at all below 70 degrees. Yesterday it turned over as if it was 80 outside,,but it was only in the high 40's. The cold natured beast has been tamed!!Big Smile

However, the ying to that yang was that the battery died in the Impala today.Confused Sometimes, you cant win! I replaced the battery tonight,,but just the same, I think I'll drive my truck tomorrow!Cowboy

NASCAR season is over Grumpy , that means train time on Sundays!! Big Smile

Jeffrey, glad to hear about your Mom!! Big Smile I know how she feels, when I had my stroke last year they sent me home the day before Thanksgiving. Depending on how she does, they may try to get all the able patients home just because it makes things easier on the staff that remains for the holiday. In either case, I hope she improves!!

Barry,, Good luck with your DR appts. Um,,you can keep that boot coffee.Ick!

Ray,,No Lake Seneca Dark Roast for me,,,,Todd looks like a zombie clown after his cup!!Laugh

G'Day all,

Oz is nothing like I imagined it. We spent the last few days in the Blue Mountains and toured to the west as well. So far Oz is like the best parts of California. We stayed in Blackheath near Austrailias' version of the Grand Canyon. Went walking and on gondolas and a 52* inclined cog rail. Beautiful scenery and a wide variety of flora snd fauna.

The commuter trains here are double tracked electrics with each track one direction. We were going to go to the Zig Zag Railway (so named because it zigs and zags across the valley) but it was closed.  Long distance passenger is diesel like Amtrak outside the NE Corridor as is freight service. We had lunch Sunday in Wentworth Falls next to the tracks and saw over a dozen trains during lunch. The average freight consist seems to be up to 5 power cars and and 20 hoppers. Haven't seen any container trains at all and oddly, no container trucks though the port area has containers stacked to the sky. Wonder if they make the shippers empty the containers on arrival?  I'll try to catch up posts, but we had no service WiFi or otherwise in Blackheath, and WiFi only in the lobby here in Eastern Creek (unless I care to pay 11.00/hr to use the cable in the room).

James - Glad you didn't get anydamage in the storms. They looked quite severe on TV. Two nights ago we were taking susnset pics along side a man from Brisbane who had been on the phone with his daughter at home and she was more than nervous. Hope they made out ok too. All we had so far was some rain.

Good evening ....

Jeff .... Glad your Mom's situation has improved. Hope she continues improving.

Darryl ... I saw your thread. Since you are new to the hobby, I suggest keeping everything managable. I would find small projects that can be combined later to put together a layout. Enjoy each small step. Keep it simple. ..... I would not get DCC yet if I were you. Instead, get a quality locomotive which is "DCC ready", and covert it later on.  Keep asking questions in the forum. Find a local model railroad club if you can. ... Model Railroader has a project layout each year, and you can get back issues with these layouts in them. Find one that suiots your situation, and then follow teh artickes to build a layout step-by-step. You can make adjustments to suit your situation. ..... My 2 cents.

Blessings, everybody.

Good Morning!

Did not sleep well last night. Just to many things moving around in my head...

Flo, coffee and a breakfast bagel, please!

I will try to save the building today, although I am not really happy with it. Foam board may be easy to cut, but it has its shortcomings. It is probably quite OK to build simple, short-lived architectural models with this material, but for detailed scale  model structures it is not very well suited.

I don´t have a problem to change to another material, but most of them require tools I don´t have and cannot afford to buy. A mini circular saw and a mini power sabre saw are the minimum I´d need, but that´s $ 200 I just don´t have ( and won´t have, either).

Not a happy camper today!

Have a good day!

ok picked up my check, I know I want to buy two things from micro mark, and the detail parts, and a weathering kit, or I could buy an undecorated loco (dash 8-32bwh) and paint that up for a custom road and buy a couple cars.... decisions decisions...

Morning Coffee in the Diner

GOOD MORNING!!!

Right now, With my Inlaws, we are running on a "wing and a prayer", SO:

Meaning: In poor condition, but just managing to get the job done

Origin:

This phrase originated during WWII. The earliest reference found is in the 1942 film The Flying Tigers. The screenplay, which was written by Kenneth Gamet and Barry Trivers, has John Wayne's character Captain Jim Gordon says this in a reference to the flight of replacement pilots:

Gordon:  Any word on that flight yet? Rangoon hotel clerk: Yes sir, it was attacked and fired on by Japanese aircraft. She's coming in on one wing and a prayer.

The phrase was taken up by songwriters Harold Adamson and Jimmie McHugh and their  WWII patriotic song Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer, 1943  tells of a damaged warplane, barely able to limp back to base:

One of our planes was missing Two hours overdue One of our planes was missing With all its gallant crew The radio sets were humming We waited for a word Then a noise broke Through the humming and this is what we heard
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer Comin' in on a wing and a prayer Though there's one motor gone We can still carry on Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
What a show, what a fight, boys We really hit our target for tonight How we sing as we limp through the air Look below, there's our field over there With just one motor gone We can still carry on Comin' in on a wing and a prayer

Adamson and McHugh wrote several patriotic songs in World War II and were awarded the Presidential Certificate of Merit by President Harry Truman.

The phrase hit a chord with the public and there are many references to it in US newspapers from 1943 onwards. It was taken up by Hollywood and a film - Wing and a Prayer - was released in 1944.

The allusion to a stricken aircraft limping home may have been influenced by the earlier term 'Winging it" , which refers to actors struggling through parts that they have recently learned in the wings of a theatre.

The phrase is sometimes given mistakenly as "on a whim and a prayer", or "on a wink and a prayer".

NEW FEATURE: JOKE OF THE DAY

{Our infirmaties in our older ages}:

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn't need my help to leave the hospital.
After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator. On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him. 'I don't know,' he said. 'She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.'

The prayer candles will be lit as much as possible. With the changing of the situation with my Inlaws, It may not be lit all day as once was. I may be in and out of here, but rest asured,  they will be lit with prayer each morning, and night!

Coffee and biscuits with butter and apple butter please. Thanks.

Nothing new to report, just carrying on with little catchup projects and cleanup. Brenda is not helping. Half the counter is full again and the table is just about covered again. Don't know how she does it or where it all comes from.

Good morning. It's 47° with 97% humidity. It'll be partly cloudy with a high of 75°.

No plans for today with the exception of doing some cleanup work on the layout. My right arm still aches where I got the flu shot yesterday. They must've used a square needle! I have to get these two new paint cans put away. The ten stacks beside the fridge (about sixty-five cans, mostly seven ounce size) are rather high. Guess I better start one somewhere else.

Good Afternoon from Germany!

It is slowly getting dark here, I already had to turn the lights on to be able to see my keyboard.

This morning saw a lot of activity trying to save that building. The whole upper board was bent outward by about 10 degrees! I glued the back part of the gable to it and put a considerable amount of weigt on during the time the glue set. Seems as if that did the job.

This is where I stand now:

That´s an N scale boxcar in front of the building, just to show how big a little O scale building is! There is still a lot to do, but not today!

Ulrich- That is quite an impressive building for being hand cut out of foam board!

Well, well, we are waiting for what-not in getting MIL in the hospital and getting FIL out of the hospital. MOH called off work as neihter of us can be in 2 places at once...Maybe MOH can make up hours the next few days instead...We cannot afford a short paycheck ever!

I will be tapped at least to go get FIL form hospital and bring him home, He is NOT to drive. But I can't stay with MIL AND go get FIL too, neither cna MOH be with MIL AND at work too...let alone go get FIL...

It will be another exhausting day, Im afraid. I can barely get my house work done and often delay things that until they need serious attention and MIL is nit picky neat and believes in cleaning whole house everyday...I used to could, but now i can't with my bad back....except when i get the spinal nerve injections, but they wear off too soon.....MOH has learned to adjust to that as MOH can't do it either. MIL might tend to think I am lazy. Problem when one is in pain, others cannot "see it" or "feel it" so they don't appreciate it.

MOH oftens goes to work, comes home and eats a little something and goes to bed and sleeps all evening adn night befroe getting up to do it again. so I know helping to look after MIL and FIL will exhaust MOH to no end as well. We ain't no spring chickens!

Well, best call MOH and see if there is any news yet...

Galaxy - although I am not really happy with it, I am quite proud of my accomplishment, given the materials I had to use. The next one will be built using FOREX, that´s a lightweight material with properties close to wood. I will have to bite the apple and buy a little table circular saw, though - that´s $ 100 off my MRRing budget Crying

Edit: Hey, I now have two medals of honor - wonder how long it will take until I am back to 5 shiny red ones!

The cold natured beast has been tamed!!Big Smile

Ah yes, the infamous cold hearted Cub Cadet line of lawn/garden equipment. I had a Cub Cadet mower for a while and if some body walked by with an ice cream cone it wouldn't start. I finally gave it away last summer and bought a new mower that is advertised to "Start on the 1st pull". Besides, it's self propelled on the front wheels rather than the rear Super Angry like the Cub Cadet was so I don't have to keep engaging/un-engaging the drive, just push down on the handle a bit. Big Smile

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of organic raisin bran and my dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug.  Thank you Ma'am.  Oh sneak a couple of those glazed sour cream donuts over here to dunk in the coffee....  Don't tell anyone...  Shhhhh...

Galaxy, did you hear the one about the 2 old guys sitting down at the lake on a park bench?  The first guy says, "Got a new hearing aid!  It's state of the art.  Second guy says, "What kind is it?"  First guy, "Oh, about three thirty."  Second guy, "So am I!  Let's go get a beer!"

Jeffrey, I have a sore arm as well this morning...  They say that means the stuff is doing its job!

Ulrich, very nice work, especially considering the materials used.  I will be watching to see how your new layout comes along.  Good to see you dabbling again with the trains!

A bit cloudy here in the Finger Lakes today, but rather nice as well.  Currently 42°F with a high around 50 this afternoon.  I shall be helping my son finish cutting up and removing the remains of the old above ground swimming pool.  It has now set on the lawn next to his front driveway long enough to have killed all the grass under it so he wants to remove it before the crowd arrives at Thanksgiving....  He must take after his Father.  His Mother would have had a conniption fit by now!  I have not taken the last two doses of Niacin (last night and this morning) and feel better already.  The Doc mumbled something about they now say people shouldn't be on it for long periods of time.  I didn't dare ask why, but looked up some long term side effects they now know.  Things like elevated blood sugar, eczema, itching, gout, and liver failure.....  The last one they have known about for years.  He has been checking liver function every blood test since I went on the stuff 20 years ago.

Later!

Paul, my deepest condolences to you and your family.  Having gone through the loss of my wife over 25 years ago to leukemia I know all too well the roller coaster ride you have been on.  Lean and rely on family and friends to get you past this time in your life.

Know that your friends here can and will be a great help during the dark times!

Paul,

My wife and I wish to send our condolences on Bobbie's passing. These are difficult times for families.

But rest assured she will have been met by family and friends who have gone on before and will be renewing acquaintances with our Lord.

Do stay close to your friends here, we always enjoyed your discussions and look forward to you being back on a more regular basis.

Best wishes,

Afternoon guys

I was messing with some P1K F3s testing them for current draw today (my first time doing it, suprised I've not blown one from over-amperage lol). One was pulling .3 amps continuous and was at .8 amps at stall. The one with the foam tape mount was originally pulling .6 continuous and 1.4 stall. I took the latter one apart and cleaned the trucks, gears, and motor out. This dropped it down to .3 amps continuous and .8 stall. I guess that's good for service, right?

Ken, Check PMs

Paul, Sorry to hear about your Wife. She's in a better place now.

Ray, I don't have a way to check it online, but I can check it via the phone. I probably need to get a card from a different company, because this is the 3rd time this has happened this year...

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
