Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a couple large shredded wheat biscuits (pour a bit of boiling water over them and drain for me), some real butter and brown sugar to go along with the freshly brewed dark roast coffee.

Jeffrey, catching the chicken for Sunday dinner was something I had to do as a little kid also.  Dad said I had to or i didn't get to eat...  At least growing up on the farm I learned the price of food as well as where it came from.  Used to hate having to be the "Grim Reaper" for the poor hen!  I got to hold it down on the log while dad took a swing with the hatchet as well.  One of my early jobs was to collect the eggs every day.  Then do the candling and float test to be sure they were fresh, grade them and get the large and extra large ones ready for customers who bought them.  We used the pullet and small ones ourselves.

The big yellow thing showed up this morning and is supposed to be shining all day!  Currently 39°F outside.  Nice Fall day (or early Winter if you follow the ancient calendar).

Have a bunch of stuff to do today.  Catch you all later!

Well well

been up and atem and out all morning.

A few weeks ago we took a friend who is in need to a seminar on a health care plan for those on SSD, SSI  or plain old SS. He decided to go with the plan and couldn;t remember how to get there...so he "hijacked me" and made me go with him. fortunately he got it done fairly quickly.

I decide to wait to see how well it works for him;...he doens't have half the medical issues I do..so it may not even compare.

Between MOH and I, for catastrophic health care for mOH, and major coverage for me, we pay out of pocket each month for insurance alone is enough of our monthly income in premiums.

That DOES NOT include  copays for scripts, or the $1300.00 / year deductible that MOh will have to pay for all health care costs until it is met! Then for MOH they only pay 80% fter that. For a parttime grocery store clerk that is A lot.

Like I said excellent for me, but catastrophic only for MOh who is, at this point anyway, healthy as a horse.

Sigh

I Am not sure, but i think the new national health care system sucks for some of us and is NOT making things better.Bang Head

ANywho,

My friend treated me to lunch at Arby's, for "babysitting him" {his words}

Tonight I think we go out for dinner at Ruby Tuesdays. We got a $10 card off in the mail from them.and so I think we go out tonight. been awhile since we ate out,. also gotta use it before it expires. Should work out cheap enough for us.

Well, off to lay down my back is killing me after tthe outting.....

Evening All,

I took a sick day today. When I got off last night my right Lumbar back felt just like it does before it is injured so I was worried that with all the bending and lifting I do during a 16 hour shift that it would put me out of work for a couple of weeks to get my back to normal. It's feeling better but is still a little tender.

I recieved a Genesis PRR FP-7 A unit in Tuscan Red in the mail Tuesday. It matches the A/B set I already have. My other units both have sound. This one I will be putting in a SoundTrax Mobile decoder so hopefully it will be easy to speed match the Tsunami's in the other 2 units.

Tomorrow I have a doctor appointment in the AM then a repairman is coming to the house in the PM. Saturday I will be meeting Phil at the LHS. He has volunteered to donate children's clothes for my daughter (she has been approved to adapt a set of brothers). The goal is to have them in her home permanently by Christmas. I have said it before Phil is a true Southern gentleman.

Tom- Wow. You are way ahead of the gameGift

JohnReid- I am saying prayers for your wife.

Ken- Hope your toe will be OK. Great photos. I would not want to be on that passenger train on the fallen bridge. Yikes!!!

Burlington Northern #24- Does Cal Scale offer N scale? I use them for my detailing. I believe I saw a device from MicroMark that you can make your own hand grabs.

Jeff- Hope you are feeling better.

Hope everyone has a great night and  prayers for those in need.

Howdy everybody.

Todd .... Today you are talking about a clogged snoot, and yesterday it was clabbered milk. I hesitate to see what you have for us tomorrow.

Barry ..... I suggest you not read Todd's posts until after your chemo treatments are completed. His conversations may cause you to feel worse.

Larry .... Your SW1500 looks very good! Thumbs Up

Evening guys

Went out to eat at a local mexican restaurant last night. It was good, but I learned to go easy on or stay away from the Habenero sauce. I downed almost a whole glass of Dr. Pepper trying to cool things down....

I tried that Nitro Stan's spot glaze and (and testor's putty on one) to smooth out the mold lines on my group of stewart F-units. The former went on easy enough and was blendable (unlike squadron), the latter (the testor's) didn't blend as well. I tried to sand both of them today and they both just flaked off.... Seems like Squadron is the only thing that sticks to ABS that I have, but it's too thick for my liking and can't be blended... I looked at the one that I had completed and it looks like I just brute-forced it. Meaning just sanded it until they were gone, with no filler... I still have to cut the brows off on the units that have them.

Garry, Nice F9Am there. I'm guessing it's a modified stewart? Did you use a detailing kit for the loco, or just made your own grabs?

Curt, I'm looking at the Cal-scale or Detail Associates detail kit for my dozen stewart Fs. Have you ever used the cal-scale one?

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Dennis and VIncent ..... Thanks for commenting on my 700D. It is model of one owned by Burlington's subsidiary, Colorado & Southern. With googling you can read about the collision it had when it was an F7. ... The model started with a Stewart F9, and the grab irons are from the Walthers detailing kits. I added a few other details. I painted it and uses MicroScale decals. ... The F3B is also a Stewart model I detailed, painted, and lettered.

The SD9 has since been detailed, too. Here is a more recent photo of it. I have 3 D7's and 3 SD9's detailed the same way. # have the back paint scheme and 3 have the red paint scheme for CB&Q.

Garry you sure do beautiful work. Yes With my shaky hands I have no idea what I'm going to do when it comes to the detailing...Sad

Went on something of a shopping spree at my LHS. I stopped by to "have a look". Famous last words. It turns out that he had received a major shipment of everything. My "having a look" turned out to be the purchase of a Mantua (sp)???? steam loco in CP livery complete with DCC/Sound. I've been trying to get one to pull my heavy CP coaches for a long time so I guess today was the day.

I also stopped at my electronics parts dealer to purchase some RJ12 connectors, a crimper to match and some 6 conductor flat telephone cable for my Digitrax DCC setup. Would you believe I had to buy a 1000 foot roll. They don't cut it there and I don't know anywhere else in town who sells it.

Needless to say I have 6 conductor wire to do umpteen model rr's . I may just sell what I don't need on Ebay or something. I HATE IT when that happens which is more and more often these days. Angry

Well, now that I've spent my budget for the next 10 years, I'd best get to building I think.

Prayers to all in need!

Good Evening,

Ken, great pics there. The one of the CP is on the north shore of Lake Superior. Glad to hear the toe is doing better.

All quiet up here in my section of the GWN. It might even get above freezing this weekend so some of the snow might just melt. I've had enough of winter now.

CDN Dennis,  I made a mistake in my info, it was an aquaduct, not viaduct. Anyway it was built with a lot of foresight as it is now a hundred years old and it still hasn't reached peak capacity. The GWWD has 3 operating engines. They used to have GE 44 tonners but now have a MLW RS23, S13 and RS13. I think they use the RS23 mostly. It is basically a very square looking switcher, sort of like a large GE70 tonner. It does have that ALCO sound though which is neat to hear. Probably more info than you wanted but sometimes I do get on a roll.

No RR time tonight as we just got in from a few errands and it is now 7:30. Had to take the dog in to get his nails trimmed and then my wife wanted to get a new toy for him because she says she is bored playing with him using the small assortment he now has. After all, he only has 57 toys. Ops, make that 58.

Well soon time for our weekly fix of Doc Martin.

See you soon,

CN Charlie

Evening y'all!Cowboy

Cloe, can I get a RBF and a hot pretzel with salt! Please!Dinner

Wow, all this talk of chasin chickens for dinner reminds me when I was a youngster.Cowboy Collecting eggs, milking cows and all that stuff! Pulling weeds for hours in the potato patch, yeah, all that fun stuff.  Nowadays going down the basement to fetch a package of frozen vegetables out of the freezer is a chore!Wink Ahh, the good old days!Big Smile

We did suffer a serious injury the other day.Surprise While disassembling my airbrush, something I have done many times, the screw in the base of the air valve plunger snapped off.Surprise I've now spent hours trying to find the part,Bang Head but it seems every company that lists what I need does not have it in stock. I've sent an email to the manufacturer (Binks) but have yet to get a reply.  Its not that I couldn't get another type of airbrush, its just I've been using this one since I was 15 (I'm 51 now). You could say I'm attached to it.Embarrassed

Oh, and for those keeping score, the brush in question is a Binks Wren "B', and I'm looking for a 59-102 repair kit.Cool

Also today is a anniversary of sorts. 1 year ago today I suffered a stroke, rendering my right side uselessSurprise. I was hospitalized until the day before thanksgiving, and sent home to begin my rehabilitation. 2 months later I built this,

and 89 days after the stroke I returned to work. Big Smile Both hands and feet working!

Even though I am not and will not be 100%, most folks don't even know when they meet  me what happened. So that brings me to 2 points.

#1 If you don't smoke, good for you, If you do, STOP! That's what caused my stroke. Directly, undeniably !

#2, we talk a lot about offering prayers for this or for that. I would hope that you don't take it lightly. I firmly believe that when prayers are earnest, they get answered. Angel

So with that being said, let's "double down" on the prayer candles this week. Too many of our brothers and sisters here need it!

Happy SoapBox over!!Big Smile

Karl

Evening, Chloe - just a hot chocolate in a go cup, please. Thank you.Smile

All this talk about 'strange' food reminded me that down to the corner from my grandparents' business, and half a block down the side street was a little restaurant. On an outside wall they had one of those painted signs (like most places used to have). The sign said "Cow brains" and the price (which I think was some price less than a dollar). Now that block (plus where my grandparents' company was located) is leveled and one of the universities in St. Louis has a new research building/complex there. Ah, tradition is a vanishing thing...

Ken, is your toe's progress due to some new medication from your VA doctor? Any healing sounds good.

Barry, your temps up thataway are a few degrees (F) lower than ours here, but we also go up to 54 F today. Getting some light frost on the car's windshield in the mornings; slows down getting away to the office in the morning, but not as bad as later in the winter can be.

Jeff, better rest up if you're having balance/other problems lately. You especially don't need any falls.

Garry, nice photos of your locos there. Thumbs Up

Have done a little more on the Frenchman River bank building (additional silver paint wash on the extension's roof out back). Still needs the clapboard walls to have more white washes. Here's so far:

Looks like I need a bit more (maybe dry-brushed) silve on the extension roof. And yep, I need to clean up paint edges (plus do the'mortaring'.

Well, about time for me to head back home. 'Nuther day of w**k, laundry tomorrow night, and on-call over the weekend.

Anyone heard from Jerry recently? I didn't see anything in the past 3-4 pages of posts (which doesn't mean it's not in there somewhere...).

AngelAngel for pretty much all of the Diners, especially those in need of healing.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a refill of the decaf for the moment.  Thank you Ma'am.

Well...  Two Scouts from the handicapped troop finished up the Railroading Merit Badge with flying colors.  I also worked with two others who still have a number of requirements to finish.  Two brothers (one of which should have finished the merit badge tonight) didn't make it to the meeting.  I made it clear to the leaders i will work with the Sc outs as long as they need to finish the merit badge.  The Down's Syndrome Scout got 2 requirements signed off tonight, and I think he will end up getting the MB with some focused work on it.  He will have to concentrate on one or two requirements and no more for a session.  But that said, 2 or 3 more sessions and he will be finished with it!  One thing I like about the leadership of the troop today is they expect the same from their Scouts that would be expected in any other troop, and are willing to take the time to achieve it.  No Merit badge of the month club anymore!

The Scoutmaster also signed to verify the time I have been working with the troop on this for my NMRA Volunteer Certificate.  I now have more than enough points to file for the certificate.  Just need to get a few more signatures, make some copies of a few things, get it all in order, and send it on to the Division AP manager.  He will then forward it to the Region Manager.

Finally have all the paperwork together to send in to the Bank for the 501c3 account for the MLK Scholarship.  Hope all of it is done correctly, and I can get the materials printed that should have been mailed 2 weeks ago...

What I didn't do was anything involving the layout down stairs today...  Oh well, maybe tomorrow.

Prayers for all in need, and I know there several of us in that category.

Good Morning or Good Night!

I am up early. Did not sleep well last night, as I developed a nice migraine yesterday evening. Still feel awkward, but that should go away soon - hopefully, because today´s TRAIN SHOW DAY! I´ll be off to Bremen in about 3 hours- with some $$ in my pocket. Maybe I find something useful for my new layout. Petra will be glad to have hubby out of her way for a day!

I will take my camera along with me, so there might be a few pictures tonight!

Have a splendid day!

Morning Coffee in the DIner

GOOD MORNING!!!

Some of you/us have a hard time "shaking a leg" in the morning. SO:

Meaning:

Rouse yourself from sleep and get out of bed

Origin:

Shake a leg and show a leg are usually discussed together, but it isn't at all clear that they are in any way connected. Both phrases have more than one meaning. So what were their original meanings and which came first?

We now sometimes use shake a leg to mean 'hurry up'. It was explicitly defined that way in the New York Magazine in 1904:

"Shake a leg ... meaning to 'hurry up'."

The more recent UK phrase 'get a legger on' is another way of saying the same thing. Before that though shake a leg had another meaning, which was 'to dance'. There are several citations from various US and UK sources from the mid 19th century that relate to dancing; for example, the Dubuque Democratic Herald, October 1863, in an advertisement for a local ball:

"Nearly every man in town able to shake a leg has purchased a ticket."

Show a leg means either 'make an appearance', usually by getting out of bed or at least showing willing by poking your leg out, or it means 'hurry along'. The second meaning isn't commonly used, nor is it old. It appears to be a confusion of the two terms 'show a clean pair of heels' and 'stretch your legs'. It may also have been confused with the 'hurry up' version of shake a leg. Whatever the source, that certainly isn't the original meaning of show a leg. Most commentators report that the phrase derives from the Royal Navy and that this was the order given to sailors to put a foot from their hammocks and get up.

An alternative version comes from the fact that women were allowed on board Royal Navy ships in the 19th century and that they were allowed to stay asleep after the sailors had been roused. The order of show a leg was supposed to have been given so that the shapely legged women could be distinguished from the hairy-legged sailors. Believe that if you will.

The use of show a leg as a wake-up call is well documented though. John Masefield (Poet Laureate from 1930 to 1967) was a trainee mariner on HMS Conway until 1891. He reported the full version of the morning call as:

Heave out, heave out, heave out, heave out! Away! Come all you sleepers, Hey! Show a leg and put a stocking in it.

(No connection there to put a sock in it by the way. That has a different meaning and is 20th century)

That's the earliest citation of the naval call I can find, although it may have been used well before 1891. There is an earlier non-naval version, from Cuthbert Bede, the pseudonym of Edward Bradley, in The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green, 1854:

"I would answer Robert when he hammered at the door; but, instead of getting up, I would knock my boots against the floor... But that wretch of a Robert was too old a bird to be caught with this dodge; so he used to sing out, 'You must show a leg, sir!' and he kept on hammering at the door till I did."

All in all, although both are sometimes used to mean 'hurry up', the idea that shake a leg and show a leg are related doesn't seem to be supported by the facts. They are two independent phrases that were coined with different meanings.

Yes I do !!!!,   not only do I appreciate the time you take to dig them out but also, even though I personally don't need them, your prayer candles. Thank you.

"An alternative version comes from the fact that women were allowed on board Royal Navy ships in the 19th century and that they were allowed to stay asleep after the sailors had been roused. The order of show a leg was supposed to have been given so that the shapely legged women could be distinguished from the hairy-legged sailors. Believe that if you will; personally, I don't."

I have read similar accounts in a couple books from the local library, the titles and authors I can't think of,  regarding life in "Nelsons Navy" so am not so dismissive of the theory.

Currently 0017 hours, Sat  17 th, 51 F with a forecast high today of 61 F, so off to bed for me.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Cheers, the Bear.

kbkchooch

Even though I am not and will not be 100%, most folks don't even know when they meet  me what happened. So that brings me to 2 points.

#1 If you don't smoke, good for you, If you do, STOP! That's what caused my stroke. Directly, undeniably !

#2, we talk a lot about offering prayers for this or for that. I would hope that you don't take it lightly. I firmly believe that when prayers are earnest, they get answeredAngel

So with that being said, let's "double down" on the prayer candles this week. Too many of our brothers and sisters here need it!

Karl, I quit smoking many years ago, so that is done.

As far as prayer candles, I DO, INDEED, light them for special thoughts and prayers. MOH has ministerial duties so prayer candles  are "part of the package". SInce MOH also has a job other than ministerial duties, I am the "keeper of the flame".

If I go out, though, the candles don't get lit til I get back, or get temporarily extinguished until I get back., for OBVIOUS safety reasons!

I used to light an extra one{s} for each forum member request here, then one day I had like 18 candles going and thought "I can just light one with a prayer for all forum members" so I don't burn the house down with candles! I also had candles for others that day.

So prayers are said over each lighting of a candle.  AngelAngelAngel

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and Huevos Rancheros please, thank you.

Sunny, with a high near 54. Light east wind.

Well, only hung the calender as we had actually discussed the location of that, but I chickened out on the rest. I’ll wait on clarification from HQ. Did do some laundry….by golly the pile is back. How? I mean she has done laundry since my last week long water supply draining, machine straining laundry marathon. How can one person generate so much laundry? I just don’t get it. MAN! I was joking when I said I best start pricing washing machines, but at this rate I’m not so sure. I will say one thing, It’ll be a GE. Technically, I suppose, they are Hotpoints. But actually they are GE with a Hotpoint label. Which half say GE as well. These babies are built like tanks and reliable….they’re 25 years old and I can’t count how many times I’ve gone downstairs due to the hammering of an out of balance load. Sounds like someone is beating war drums down there. No one else cares because when I'd “mention” it Grumpy, I'd get the “what?” look Grumpy Grumpy. Not to mention the shear multitude of uses. All without a peep or service call. Except for an igniter on the dryer. Imagine that. They’ve more than earned a stay with the brand purchase.

Karl- Happy Health Anniversary yesterday. Building looks great and what a testament to the therapeutic benefits eh?

Welp, it’s 0600 now as I write this and the alarm just went off. So that means Brenda will be getting up in about a half hourConfused. If yer not gonna get up til 6:30, I don't get why you don't set the alarm for 6:30. Yes, yes, yes, she is a snooze buttoner. I don’t know what makes her so tired, but she can go to bed at 9pm and sleep til 9 or 10 am if left alone, even if she does nothing but sit on the couch all day. No medical issues, she’s always been that way. Anyway, I will let her get her coffee and her (close your ears Karl) first smoke in before I try to get clarification on the location of the wall clutter she wants reinstalled. Asking anything before the coffee and the cig, is like poking a stick in a Tigers butt. Indifferent Not pretty. If not, I’ll wait a bit longer until she asks why I haven’t done it yet.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning. Slightly on the chilly side here. It's 38° with 100% humidity. It'll be mostly sunny with a high of 62°.

The plan today is to clean up the layout. Now whether I actually get a chance to do it remains to be seen. Part of it is some freight cars I had out to describe to an interested party. I think they're not his cup of tea so they'll be rewrapped and put back in storage. I also have a couple of locos that are in pieces. I need to get them back together and in the display rack. One is a Mantua SP F7 shell I transplanted to an Athearn blue box drive. The shell is OK but the drive needs some minor work. The other is a Stewart AS16 that needed a new motor. While replacing it I discovered it had a cracked truck. I had a truck that would fit it but it didn't match the other one. So I changed them both out. So now I have an AS16 with FA1 trucks. I need to get that one back together too.

Good Morning all,

Todd I would wager that if you opened the back of the washer or dryer you’ll see all the important parts stamped Benton Harbor, Michigan AKA Whirlpool Corporation.  Maytag, LG, GE, Kenmore, Kitchen Aid, Whirlpool.  I was stationed across the street from their research and development center for 2 years and we test drove most of their appliances.  If a USCG Unit can’t destroy it then it’s good to go!

Heading out to the Route 30 Express train show tomorrow, everything was going well until Dorothy decided to tag along.  This train show is operating sessions at several different houses, almost like trick or treat for MRR enthusiasts.  I don’t mind bringing Dorothy along but she is a girl and she sometimes distracts the train operators.  Dorothy has launched a thousand trains and wrecked tenfold due to distracted operators….

It didn’t take long for the “new” congress to attack the retired military.  Right now I’m on Tricare Prime, I live more than 40 miles from a military base sick call so I go to contract doctors and pay a set deductable (varies depending on the service received).  I pay a monthly premium for this.  Congress and our President have decided that the 40 mile limit should be rescinded and that since I receive a retirement check I should pay 20% of any and all medical costs plus my monthly premium.  I do have the option of driving 125 miles to the nearest Military medical facility for anything minor.  This was not the retirement benefit plan I signed up for in 1987.  If this plan was in place this past year my entire retirement check would have been spent paying hospital deductibles.

JohnReid.....glad to hear your wife is doing ok.

I have to take the dog into the vet this morning to get some dry spots taken care of that she keeps scratching at.

Later tonight I`ll be headed to a friends house for an ops session.
