Well I tore down the RS16 and it appears the motor isn't bad after all, just very dirty. I cleaned the brushes and commutator with 91% alcohol. The amount of crud that poured out was significant. Three fingers on my left hand turned black! I rubbed the commutator with an alcohol soaked paper towel until all I could see was clean towel. It runs like a champ now and I consider it worthy of converting to DCC.

On the Mantua F7A I have an F7B body in the closet somewhere. With it and the F7A body I can change a couple of FT's to F7's. The FT bodies are on Athearn clone F7 frames with Frankenstein power and drives.

Thanks for the congrats on securing the mod position. I'll do the best I can with it. I have to tell you, I don't play favorites and I don't pull punches. If a duck's a duck I'll call it a duck and if the duck is carrying a gun it will be dealt with accordingly. Plain and simple. This is no change for me. If I have a question on something I'll hand it up to my primary contact. I've always moderated in this manner.

Jeff, Whatcha gonna do with that hotel (that is the DPM one, right)? Either needs some fixin' up, or some graffiti on it, if it's way past its prime in your RR's history. I'd looked at that one (or the DPM one that looks like it), but decided my RR's towns were too small for a 4-story one, so I'll be using the Seymour Block building instead, for the motel. But that project is down the road a piece. (I bought the building assembled, but I'll be adding some kind of interior, signs, etc. to it). Ya got a couple of nice-looking locos there!

That was the DPM version, the M.T, Arms. It went away in a trade long ago.

Congrats and thanks to Jeffrey for stepping in as a moderator. Bow I may have to take back some of those things I've been saying about you... Smile, Wink & Grin

Ken, lots of positive waves headed your way from here for the interview. Maybe you should keep a picture of Jungle Pam with you in your pocket, just for luck!

Afternoon, Zoe - got a bit wet from a surprise shower on the way here. Don't think they were predicting THAT... I'll have a bison steak, medium done please, with a side salad and some asparagus and a glass of one of your fine Finger Lakes wines. Thank you!

Wasn't feeling good yesterday afternoon, and didn't go on-call until 4:30 p.m. so I set the timer and took a nap for couple of hours. It did help some, feeling better today. This morning I went by the office (had realized that I needed to turn in mileage today (not that much), and I also Oops realized I hadn't turned in our monthly log of who I've seen, where, and the disposition (no, not if they were in a foul mood or not - what I wound up doing/setting up follow-up services, etc.). Got that done, but it was about lunchtime by then.

Galaxy, glad to hear your furnace is up and running again! And hope you get the warranty details ASAP from the manufacturer!

Sir Madog

... actually, I have never been to Kansas - too far east for my taste. But I saw a recent movie on Kansas, with big buffalo herds grazing peacefully on the prairie grass, until a band of soldiers started to shoot the. They were wearing blue uniforms. Could it be that the movie wasn´t so recent?

Ulrich, that might be a possibility on the movie you were watching...Whistling Though, there are some bison herds that some ranchers have in the USA (I just looked, and there's even a Bison Ranchers Association for/in Kansas), but those are not likely open range all the way across broad sections of the state...

Did Dennis (Stourbridge) have some people on the forum giving him trouble, or was he just overloaded (like you)?

Jeff, have fun at the attorneys (when you go watch the sisters sign - and I guess you'll sign too). Whatcha gonna do with that hotel (that is the DPM one, right)? Either needs some fixin' up, or some graffiti on it, if it's way past its prime in your RR's history. I'd looked at that one (or the DPM one that looks like it), but decided my RR's towns were too small for a 4-story one, so I'll be using the Seymour Block building instead, for the motel. But that project is down the road a piece. (I bought the building assembled, but I'll be adding some kind of interior, signs, etc. to it). Ya got a couple of nice-looking locos there!

Ray, your staging area looks good - like your shrubs down between the tracks (very nicely done)! Bow

JR - Maybe your truck would get good mileage in Kansas... until the crosswinds blow it over (sometimes)! Ya got to keep in mind, there's not very much in the way of windbreaks there, either... Smile, Wink & Grin

Ken, Best wishes for things to go well (both the surgery and your recuperation time) tomorrow and after. If your trainings are like some of mine, you likely won't miss very much with having to leave it early. Wink One thing to watch for is, don't let your w**k push you too hard on coming back too soon. Not worth it to undo all the surgeon will do to help your foot, nosiree! Hope your job interview on Friday goes well for you. Thumbs Up

Todd, do you think 'Jungle Pam' was doing a bit of (ahem..cough, cough...) 'psychological warfare' to distract the opposing racers so that 'Jungle Jim' got a lead on them from the start? Nobody would do that, would they?...Whistling Oh, I can't say that I am greatly surprised that Brenda changed her mind on something in that tile project. Can you?

CN Charlie, good to see you in again. I'd love to see some photos of your new N scale layout progress... (hint, hint...). Yeah

About time for me to finish up dinner and head out. Got men's small group tonight, and I may then catch the debate and see who falls the flattest on his face....

AngelAngel for those needing comfort, healing (or having surgery), a good night's rest, and/or other needs.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Well today was no better than yesterday! I no sooner made my morning post than my father calls with things that have to be done before his visitors get here. So I helped him out with that then it was off to town for lunch and a trip Wal-Mart. Lunch was at a Mexican place we frequent. Tell you what, you go there you better bring your appetite! Prices are good and the portions are BIG. then it was on to Wal-Mart. This I didn't mind too much as he was saving me a drive to town for grocery shopping. I did my shopping right then plus picked up a new flash drive to replace the one that died.

I got back home and discovered I had a couple of packages waiting for me. One contains a little gun store. Looks like maybe an old Woodland Scenics metal building. The box also has a load of grain elevator parts and pieces! Just the thing I need. The other box contains two locos. An Athearn RS-16 with a bum motor and what looks like a Mantua SP F7A dummy unit. Wonder how long it'll take me to slap a powered chassis into it.

Good Afternoon,

A coffee and a toasted cinammon bun please Chloe, oh and a cheeseburger for my little pal, Robbie. What's that Robbie? You want me to order a cheeseburger for Rerun. Well consider it done.

I realized it has been at least a month since I was last here but I do check in most days to see what is going on.

No word from Rob yet and that is unusual for him. Garry, you were in touch with him last year at about this time and perhaps you could do so again. I lost his e-mail address when my computer crashed a couple of years ago.

I'm not usually in here during a weekday afternoon but I have been home for the past 3 days with a very bad cold. I might make it back into the office Friday but no need to push it. This afternoon was the first time in a week that I ran a train so I guess I'm improving. I wound up passenger operations as that was September on the Mortimer sub so I think October will be way freight month. Time to get the Consolidation, or hog as they were nicknamed on CN, out of the engine house.  Might do a little on the N scale tomorrow, either start painting the freight shed kit or carve up some foam.

Ken, good luck on the job interview. You should tell them exactly what you said here about loving the smell of Bondo in the morning. Sounds like something someone who loves their work would say. Hope that toe of yours gets better. Take care.

Time for  a coffee which should start me coughing again but it seems to help clear out my lungs if you know what I mean.

CN Charlie

Ken - I worked in an auto body shop in my youth 18 to 20 year old. I still love the smell of Bondo and paint. It is the only thing I miss about the business now. Do not think I would like crawling around under bent up sheet metal, lying on concrete floors at my age.

Good luck.

 Morning All,

Currently 52 with an expected high of 84 under sunny skies.

Wednesday is my normal day off so I will be heading to the hospital in a bit. There is no clock in my wifes room so she requested one from home. I will bring it to her and stay a little while just to see if she is still doing well. Yesterday she told me to do some fun stuff.

The four #5 LH Walthers turnouts and WS track bed showed up yesterday, along with four Micro Mark Switch Tender turnout motors, so fun stuff today will be getting some more trackwork done on the yard.

 Prayers to all in need

We have pretty much the same standards as US when it comes to emission control standards Vincent. I  bought a 97 Fire Bird Trans Am Convertible this spring with the LZ Vette engine. It takes Premium fuel with no Ethanol to keep the octane up.  It's pricey to run neat $1.30/L but it sure is a mean machine!

I bought it with 74K km and it was absolutely mint as in next to new! A great find for me. Time to put it away now  because it can snow any day up here. Thats why the low KM"s.

No progress on the layout but soon!! Wink

Good Afternoon Gang!

One of those dab and gray days. Other than one of our neighbors dogs barking all day long, there is no sign and sound outside.

I went to Lothar´s place to do some w*rk on that passing station module. It now sports a platform, which I built using 1mm styrene sheet stock. Still needs painting and detailing , so no pictures yet. It´s been my first MRRing activity for over 3 months now, and I tell you it feels good to be back in "business". Lothar and I will go going into Hamburg tomorrow to pick up some supplies. I need a sheet of 7mm Styrofoam, some paint and a bottle of PVA. Not much of a spending, but even a little can be too much at a time.

Garry - friendly looking friend you´ve got there.

Good morning. It's 69° with 75% humidity. The high will be 82° and it'll be partly cloudy.

Nothing much going on today. I'll be going to town later to do a bit of grocery shopping. No noise from down the hill so maybe I can get through the day without my father adding something to it. Work on the grain elevator is progressing slowly.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, lots of dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR mug and a big bowl of Organic Pumpkin and Flax seed Granola please.

Sugar was up a little this morning.  Nothing serious, still in the OK range.  It has been staying in the high 90s or low 100s (Under 110) in the mornings.  Today it was 127... Likely because allergies are kicking in big time around here and I have been sounding like Barry was a few days ago for the last couple days.  No, not a cold, just itchy eyes and stuffed up nose and sneezing now and then.  Guess I need to clean the HEPA filters and get them going for the Winter.

Ken, I don't like the sound of what you are saying about the toe at all!  Keep off your feet as much as possible, and good luck at the surgeon's office.

Todd, running late has a whole different meaning from back when I was w*rking.... Smile, Wink & GrinLaugh  Now it is a way of life!

Barry, keeping you in my prayers for a good report!

Sue and Garry, thank you for your kind words...  I am if nothing else having fun creating my own little world.  Of course there are people in my family who say I have been living in my own little world most of my life. Whistling

OK, time to check mouse traps!

Later!

Good morning ..

I started a thread for the visit I had at MR HQ.

Here is one of the pictures.

This is my friend in IL (Reggie). I named my junk yard after him because he has accumulated lots and lots of stuff. The good stuff he has includes at least one of nearly every item made by American Flyer Trains. He is retired, but he works part time at a hobby shop just for the heck of it.

..................................

Ulrich ... I hope Darren will still post here. I like his posts.

Todd .... You never know what is in those Chinese recipes. I hope the cooks here in the diner don't get any ideas.

Ray ... Your layout work is very impressive!

good luck with the doc tomorrow. Tough to get that toe to heal completely when you're on your feet all day. The boot makes for a good wheel chock but don't try to push start anything - they tend to break the sole of the moon boot. Then the docs get really angry with you........

Boy do I have experience with all that! And the toe problems too! A couple of times I lost all the skin off the bottoms of BOTH feet. It just peeled off like it was nothing.

Ken, you've only glimpsed the tip of the iceberg. Take extremely good care of that toe or you'll get a good look at more of the berg. And keep in mind what I said about Charco masquerading as cellulitis. Nasty condition with possible life threatening consequences.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and heuvos rancheros please. Thanks.

Scattered showers. Cloudy, with a high near 72.

Came home last night to find Brenda has removed a strip of decorative tile from the front of the tubSigh. Said she never liked it and wants it to match the decorative strip that will split the middle of the shower.

Garry- Road kill deer huh.Hmm Well, I guess as long as I think it’s chicken…..I’m ok. That was really nice of the magazine to give you a tour. Kinda shows they really care about each and every reader/hobbyist. Not a lot of businesses will do that. Looking forward to some more photos from your visit with our hosts.

Jungle Pam. I was pretty young but I think I vaguely remember her from when she was “helping” Jungle Jim. But I definitely know who she is from years of magazines and following drag racing. Preferred her over Linda “Miss Hurst” Vaughn. Pam used to get into some pretty….um….”interesting” positions shall we say, to check out the cars position at the line if I recall correctly.

Ray- Yesterday you mentioned running late. Well that is quite possibly the single most used phrase I use since retirement.

Vincent- In Illinoyz, if you hit a deer with your vehicle, you must call the State Police and report. A trooper will show up, see the deer has in fact met it’s demise through interaction with a vehicle and you are asked if you want the deer. If you say yes, you’re given a tag and off you go with it. If you decline the thing, if possible of course, some semi’s render a deer pretty much inedible even if you could scrape enough of it up, it is taken to a packing plant and supposedly processed for food for the needy or food lines or something like that. I don’t think that happens much though. I could be wrong.

Welp, events for the day have not changed from yesterdays accounting except after I put a generator on the old fitty six Ford pickup this afternoon, there’s the addition of the Homecoming parade this evening. Funny thing, when Brenda mentioned it this morning, I had a recollection. Last year I came to the parade from working on the same truck getting it running and road safe for the trip to the body shop and was wearing the same bib overalls. Ah tradition.

But first……..watch ZivaStick out tongue.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Ray,  Lookin' good!  Larry and I are having trouble working on the layout.  We are both on projects that have not been as fun as expected.  I am sure we will do better when the weather changes.

Good Morning All,

60F and intermittent thunder storms today. We load for Virginia International today and leave tomorrow morning. Two of the rigs will go on to Daytona for a test and the third returns so we can get ready to do the VSCCA season finale at Lime Rock the week after.

No layout time again but I am getting ready to install the feed buss and hook up the drops (plus add a few I didn't get to yet). So far I see three zones and one reverse section but I'm not sure if I need anything special for the turntable yet as I haven't built it yet let alone install it.

Kansas eh? I like Kansas - no hills = good mileage with the truck.

Ulrich - gotta love those temporary taxes. As for the rest of it, well - diner rules forbid discussion, no?  Hope you get dome help with the modertor gig - a pretty thankless task but there you go.

Ken - good luck with the doc tomorrow. Tough to get that toe to heal completely when you're on your feet all day. The boot makes for a good wheel chock but don't try to push start anything - they tend to break the sole of the moon boot. Then the docs get really angry with you........

Well, times wasting so back into the shop I go.  Catc y'all later,  J.R.

Good Morning from Germany!

October 3rd - a national holiday at this end of the Big Pond. "Day of German Unity" the day is called to commemorate the day, when the former German "Democratic" Republic in the east ceased to exist. One of the first acts of the unified parliament was to decide upon a surcharge to federal income tax to pay for the massive rebuilding of that part of Germany. It was supposed to be charged for 12 years, but is now in its 23rd year... Whistling 41 years, the West had been paying to keep the people of the GDR in their part of Germany and thus keeping the communist rule in place, for 22 years we are now paying to also keep ´em there. 22 years ago, the population of the former GDR was 17 million people, it is down to a little over 11 million now. 6 million have in the meantime moved to the West. Since 2 years now, we have started to pay for our fellow Europeans - I wonder  for how long we will have to put up with that. Without the EU, Germany´s state coffers would be filled to the brim ... Whistling

No, Janie, this is not a rant - just stating facts.

A day to be merry and frolic in the Autumn sun like Puff, the magic dragon? Certainly not for all!

Darren (Stourbridge Lion) has resigned from his post as user moderator of the Kalmbach forums. As it seems, I am the only one left to do the honors. That´s a little heavy to bear, so I am looking for someone to share this task with me. If you are interested, please drop me a PM.

Janie, just a decaf please.

I managed to get some quality time in the train rooms today, and have almost finished with the staging area in the "new" room.  Last time I showed a photo of the area was a couple weeks ago I thing.  i was balasting the track on the upper staging at that time...

Since then I have been slowly getting more done.  After backing the Lakeshores Limited back onto the track, I decided the blue sky at the level of the track doesn't make it.  So I decided yesterday to put some foliage behind the track on the wall a la the Endless Mountains of the Southern Tier of NYS ( like what was in Stan's photo yesterday...), so here she is tonight.

And looking down the track...

Hope you all have a great night!  Prayers for all in need.

Evening guys

been kinda busy, kinda passed out today. I forgot to turn off my alarm last night, so it woke me up at 5. so I slept for 6 hours. I tried to go back to sleep but gave up around 7:30. after some computer time and eating, I went back to bed around 10. Woke up around 1. Went out and took the exhaust off of my car (more of a pain than taking it off my father's car, the AC lines are right next to the headers on the drivers side. Went to a work meeting, then came back only for my dad to want me to hold a different intake while he ported it. Never really got the chance (when I wasn't sleepy) to try the styrene on the fuel tanks. I will try tomorrow morning. In good news I have 2 dates tomorrow, let's just hope both girls show up. lol

Dennis, part of the problem is IMO the US (and I think canada) have some strict emissions regulations compared to other countries. My car got about 18 city MPG before I, uh *waits for vinnie to leave* removed the catalytic converters and EGR (emissions stuff). I got 24 MPG in town after removing them. It also made my car almost a full second quicker in the 1/8th mile.

Garry, intresting about the restaruant in Kentucky doing that. In Wisconsin, if you hit a deer it counts as it being hunted. And therefor it's legal to eat. As for a restaruant, IDK.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

It's a nice 70 here. We're expecting a low tonight of 55 with a chance of rain.

This morning I had expected this to be a day for resting. My father had different ideas. First, breakfast at McDonald's. Then a trip to Wal-Mart to stock up on supplies for relatives coming Thursday. My younger sister and her significant other are coming down from Pennsylvania to visit for bit. Then visits to several law offices and the courthouse to make sure all the records on my parents property is straight. You see, my parents are selling their house. It'll still be in the family, it just won't belong to them anymore though they'll have a lifetime lease on the east wing. Still, all three legal heirs have to be there, of which my younger sister is one. My older sister and myself are the other two. One of my relatives here is the buyer. And yes, she can afford it easily! If I even look at the electric bill for that place my bank account screams and faints! Heck, my electric bill and car insurance together came up to just over $110 last month and that doesn't come close.

Finally got back home after 2pm. I was quite restless so I went out and mowed the grass. That ate up a few hours. Then since my father is working tonight I fed his dogs and the cat. Boy that cat has the dogs well trained. She comes through the door first. They have to wait.

Well after that busy day I'm fairly wiped out. So I think I'll call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.
