Jeff - with the price of cars and gas in my neck of the woods, anyone is still happy to be able to own and move a car. Lots of folks are giving up on it these days. Gas has gone up again today - just in time for tomorrow´s national holiday...

Jim - actually, I have never been to Kansas - too far east for my taste. But I saw a recent movie on Kansas, with big buffalo herds grazing peacefully on the prairie grass, until a band of soldiers started to shoot the. They were wearing blue uniforms. Could it be that the movie wasn´t so recent?

Calling it a day for today. I am tired from doing nothing.

Well, the Furnace BOY {who is like 22 but doesn't look old enough to drive} has left and WE HAVE HEAT!

I asked how long the warrantee is on the new parts, and he said he'd have to get back to me with word form the manufacturer. I said I wanted it in wroting so they could send it to me. I want to know so if the parts fail i know when they are covered.

Yes,. teh Mazda 3's I was talking about were gas versions, but there shouldn't be any much difference of like doubling it for going diesel. oh well..

WEll now the furnace should last ten years I hope..parts from china can be hard to come by!

Well I guess now I can take a nap.Zzz

Dinner is ham and eggs.

Sir Madog
Lothar drives a Mazda 3 Diesel, which gives him nearly 60 mpg. Diesel fuel is a little cheaper than regular gas, but even so it is a big drain on the pocket book for him. His job doesn´t earn him riches, either. His monthly fuel bill exceeds $ 230 ... Whistling. And don´t talk about wear and tear on the car.

I've driven a gas powered Mazda 3, don't think there's a diesel version here. At least I haven't seen one. It's a nice little car but I prefer something a lot bigger. I have enough space in my vehicle for all the lumber and supplies needed for a good sized layout and still get a few passengers in. Just don't expect to pass a lot of gas stations.

Jeff - Roman numerals on the watch? (cool watch, by the way)  Bet Roman numerals are one thing that they haven't digitalized or "got an app for that" yet! Not sure if Roman numerals are taught in school anymore, even.

Even if there were an app for it I doubt if it would work on my ancient Blackberry. I put the watch in one of my coin collection cases last night. Maybe it'll be worth something in a few thousand years. You could probably pick one up from the factory for about 50¢.Laugh

Jim, the couplers themselves aren't so bad (worst part is the spring -- but that's no worse than replacing a Kadee knuckle spring -- in fact the draft gear boxes SNAP TOGETHER!) -- the hard part is not having the special "coupler building" tools.  In HO that's not always so bad -- just makes things easier.  In N scale, they're apparently mandatory.

Got annoyed with the Rapido couplers in between the A/B unit, and replaced them as well.  Next up is finding where I put my tools and tearing apart the frames to work on modifying them to allow for DCC decoders to be wired in and programmed.  *MAYBE* I'll even get them done enough to run on the N-scale modular club's layout this weekend at the train show (not likely ... ).

Good..um..Afternoon, Zoe - had to see what time I was on (but I think all of Kansas is on the same time...Smile, Wink & Grin). Oh, yeah - I'll have a bowl of chili with some grated cheese and a few grated onions, please, and a RBF. Thanks!

james saunders

Night...

LOL - Good one, OzJim! Thumbs Up

Gee the way everybody was yesterday, Vinnie may get a call from the Kansas Board of Tourism (or his counterpart there...). Oh, and Ulrich, I don't think they have those big herds of bison roaming the plains of Kansas anymore - how long ago was it when you were here last? Whistling They may have some local ranchers with some bison they're raising, though with the drought through a lot of the Midwest this past summer, I know even in Missouri our ranchers have been selling off cattle to just try to cut their losses (feed costs are quite high...).

Hey, Todd, if you want a longer day trip, we have a Menard here (brand-spankin' new)! Hey, maybe if you sent me a photo of the tile, I could ask ours if they have the tile in stock. Whistling

Lee - groooaannn...Laugh

Dan, you make me glad I'm in HO scale, hearing about N scale couplers. Thumbs Up Glad you got yours done!

Chris, nice photo of the Kansas mountains there! Whistling

Ken, while I don't recall Jungle Jim or Jungle Pam, she looks like a few of the gals on mechanics' shop calendars I saw back then...Whistling

Jeff - Roman numerals on the watch? (cool watch, by the way)  Bet Roman numerals are one thing that they haven't digitalized or "got an app for that" yet! Not sure if Roman numerals are taught in school anymore, even.

Monon Jim, good to see you in the Diner. Cowboy

CDN Dennis - if you're talking about the same stuff I recall for mice, it'd w**k with mice, but a bigger mouse or rat would just haul the thing away...Surprise

Curt, thanks for the info on your lights - who's the company for the LED's w/resistors? (You can PM me or email that info)

Karl, I wonder if Kansas troopers get very many 'passing through' kids doing like you did?Smile, Wink & Grin You were lucky, though.

I don't know how cool it got last night here, but this morning around 8:30 a.m., it was still only 52 F. I turned the electric baseboard heaters on (to the lower setting) last night, just in case. The thermostat on them won't kick 'em on if ti doesn't get that cool. Only supposed to reach mid-60's F (18 C) today, but it's already 66 F (19 C).

I stayed up way too late last night (got stuck on, and on, and on...) with chess game on my idevice (till about 1:30 a.m. So I got up later than usual, and still barely made my 10:00 a.m. haircut appointment.

I got in a CD of the Jan. 1954 ORER (large PDF file with section bookmarks and all) that I bought off the Bay. Seems well worth the money. Now super-duper-huge DVD MR  collections, THAT is another matter... (no offense intended, Kalmbach...).

Broadway Lion - such a 'shcoking' photo! Smile, Wink & Grin Good to see you in again. Yeah Any new projects you're doing?

Brakie, sounds like you are (almost) caught up. Oh, that my w**kbench was half as cleared as yours is..Whistling

B&O Stan, nice photos (especially with the cloudy day you had for lighting!). That station is in amazingly good shape for that old. If one of our Diners (Duke) wakes up (since you did mention Berkshires...), you two can have a nice conversation about Berkie, I'm sure. He tends to nap in one of the back booths. Smile, Wink & Grin

Garry - welcome back, and cool that you got a tour of MR when you were in the area!

Paul, I forgot whether you had mentioned - what do you have coming in on your orders? Your wife continuing to heal up?

Ray, did Manét have his 'trophy' for dinner? A psychologist I w**ked for a while back had one cat that would whap the mouse on the head, but didn't appear to want to eat it. (Just play with it...)

I still have a bit of a headache this morning. Had one earlier, but thought getting some food into me would help (only so-so...). May head home and get an aspirin (strongest thing I have in the house currently). Might take a nap, perhaps. I don't go on-call until 4:30 p.m. tonight.

Will NOT be staying up late playing that chess game tonight if I don't get called out...Sad

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G. (with nagging headache - me, not the city)

Our Mazda 3's over here get only like 30 MPG!

Now you make me think about my own statement. Let´s see, whether my math is right...

Lothar claims, his car needs 3.8 liters for 100 km. 3.8 liters are just one gallon and 100 kilometers are about 64 miles. I can confirm those 3.8 liters, as this figure is not unusual for those turbo-charged, stratified direct injection Diesels. How come the Mazda 3 in the US consumes about double?

Anywho,

I am waiting for the furnace man to come {actually he looks more like a 'furnace boy"..I am amazed at how young these Doctors, repairmen, and etc are starting to look! I OBVIOUSLY am getting older! They don't look old enough to drive let alone repair something..on a body or a thing!

Well, I have some scrubb ing to do so I will busy myself twith that. Had a major boilover onteh stove the other day so have to scrub it off. I HATE that chore as much as I HATE when a boilover happens!

MOH says the MIL is getting real close to nothing-ness. She sleeps a lot, drifts off in conversations, adn hardly eats at all. MOH goes over everyday after work to see her. Since I am nto along when MOH goes, I haven't seen her lately. That's OK as when i do, shes always calling me fat and remarking how much weight I gained after my stomach/esophogus Corrective surgery!

Well, I'd better get off now

Good grief, and I thought gas was bad in Alberta at +/- $5.00 per US Gal. I wouldn't want Lothar,s fuel bill wit that 3 hr a day commute!

Its been a slow day today - wasn´t really up to anything. I am completely undecided which way to go in terms of model railroading, so I better give my plans a few more thoughts before rushing into anything. Sun´s slowly setting over here, so it´s happy hour - Janie, how about some Drinks, please?

Mornin' everyone, (takes off raincoat and boots...)

"......... and another ones gone, Another One Bites the Dust!"  Done eliminated another mousie over night!  Trap down cellar got it again.  Thanks for the offer of the loan of the cats, Karl, but I have a pair of 20 pounders here already and I think they might either get very territorial or go hide (mine are declawed).  Last Spring Manét came running from the kitchen to the office to show me he caught a mouse.  Very proud he was!

Zoe, I'll have a couple eggs over easy, bacon, and a double order of sourdough toast to start the day.  Real butter on the toast please.

Cold, wet, icky day outside here in the Finger Lakes.  I think I will concentrate on some items in the train room and put away the materials from the Meet last Saturday.

Lion, nice weathering of the rails there...  What?  Oh it's 1/1 scale.....

Stan, nice caboose!  No, not referring to the photo Ken posted....  (Don't want to get in trouble with the wait staff you know!)  I assume the inside is restored to new condition as well?

Best get a move on...  I slept in again this morning, so I am running late.  Not that it really matters to a retiree...

Since today is traditionally the Feast of the Guardian Angels, may your Guardian Angel be watching over you!

Good morning everyone!

We had a nice weekend at the museum with our local Falling Leaves Festival here. A steady crowd of probably better than a hundred visitors over the two days. I even broke out the B&O caboose markers and hung them up on the old P&WV RR caboose we have there:

The station turned 100 this year and still looks good!

Chris, sorry I missed your email. You can figure on me being at the Museum on Fridays Saturdays and Sundays until the end of the season on January 1st, except a couple of Saturdays including this upcoming weekend. Doug will be running his 2ft gauge Shay this weekend in Bradford, so I'll probably hit that early, and then I have to take my Mother to a family wedding over in Ripley NY. I will be around on Friday and Sunday, though.

Garry, I bought those foggers quite a few years ago for my Son's band, and I'm not even sure if the company is still in business. There are a lot of good fog machines available on the web.

Ken, Jungle Pam is definitely a nice distraction! In another post, guys were talking about Other things we could spend our money on if not the trains, and of course it came around to "wimmin". Well, the only thing I can say from years of experience is Wimmin come and Wimmin go but a Berkshire is forever! :)

Everyone have a great day!

Morning All.

Currently 58 with an expected high of 90 under sunny skies.

I have a closing shift today, then a meeting after the store closes, so I will not get home til around 11:00.

Will stop at the hospital before going to work. They moved my wife from oncology to a long term hospital. The same floor just a different hospital. Something to do with insurance. She will be there for some physical therapy and just checking her blood counts. Don't know how long though.

Should receive my orders from Micro Mark and Walthers today or tomorrow, and since I have tomorrow off, I my get some layout work in.

   Prayers to all in need.

Good morning.

I'm glad the Diner was busy during the time I was out of town. I have a lot of catching up to do. Here goes.

Mobilman44 ... Welcome to the Diner. I have enjoed your posts in the general forum. I, too, am 68. You are in Houston, and that is where I was born. You had been in Chicago, and I grew up west of there.

Dennis - PA ..... Welcome to the Diner. I have seen you green locos in teh general forum, and I think they are very nice. Also, your RS1 looks real.

Dan .Ne06874 .... Good to see you here.

Jeff ... Nice work so far on the grain elevator. I was not here to tell you my favorite for concrete color. It is Rust-Oleum Camouflage 1917 Khaki in a spray can. It has a sand / gray color. Concrete has sand in it, and this is close to that color. After spraying, I brush on a mix of india ink and rubbing alcohol. Finally, I lightly weather it. One recent project was my Union Station, and I did it that way.

Todd ... You must be "stalled" with the shower stall. Smile, Wink & Grin

Barry .... Having a cold may seen funny, but it's snot. Whistling

JR ... Glad to hear the NH I-5 is in operation.

Ray ..... I like the photo of the corner store and old vehicles. Bow

JohnBoy ..... I like the old information about monorails. ... Did you hear about the monorail company that went out of business? ... Their operations were suspended. Smile, Wink & Grin

Stan ... You mentioned foggers made by MBT. I'm not familiar with that company. .... The picture is still not on the wall. making other changes in teh room fist.

Dennis Choo Choo Willie .... Good to see you in the Diner..

Ulrich ...... I hope the tooth is better. .... I could not model in Z or N myself also. Too small.

Tom - PA ..... You mentioned bureaucracy regarding test supplies. That stuff drive me crazy. Now I hear, doctors will be required to send our medical records to bureaucrats in DC. That violates our privacy and increases givernemnt spending. Dumb stuff.

Galaxy .... I am sorry to learn about your furnace problems. I suggest you contact your states consumer protection agency. Also, there may be a regulatory agency overseeing heating contractors that might be helpful. Perhaps, your state representative can help, too...... Meanwhile, you can post the origin of the phrase, "ripped off" in one of your interesting posts about phrases.

Jim CG ... You are doing great with the gas station. Bow  I made one too. Mine was missing the signs from the kit, and after getting no responses from the manufacturer, I made my own signs.

Chris ..... Are you still dealing with THAT editor? ............ Youyr photos are interesting.

Ken ...... You have interesting photos, too. ... Regarding your BBQ, are you living with the "grill of your dreams"? Smile, Wink & Grin

Karl kbkchooch ... Good to see you here in the Diner.

Vincent ... You seem busy. Good to hear that.

Curt ..... Seems like there is always someting needing repair such as your light fixture. Keeps the home improvement stores in business.

TSF .... We were close to your neck of the woods.

Sam in MS ........ Hope you are doing well.

Sue .... Dry there, too? .... I think most of the country had dry weather in 2012.

Jim Mononguy .... Good to see you in the Diner.

Lee, Jeremy, and Bill T .... Good to see you guys!

Did I miss anyone? sorry if so.

Good morning!!!

Coffee and the breakfast pile please, thanks.

Officially waiting for the tile to arrive at Menard'sCool. Ordered it yesterday at the urging of my wife. So, what's that leave for me to do? Everything else in the world. First, laundry. I also best drain the pump in the pressure washer before I forget about it. That means a trip to Wally world for some RV anti-freeze, WHICH is across the street from Menard's and right next to the Chinese buffet so I'll plan that trip around lunch time. Hey, as cheap as fast food, less the tip. A burger, fries and a drink at Burger King yesterday cost almost $8. For less than a dollar more I can eat til I need a nap and be waited on by a girl who smiles when she takes my plate away and tries to make idle conversation before tilting her head slightly, smiles again sheepishly, then nods a couple times as she returns to her chores because even she realizes whatever she said didn't make a whole lot of sense. At least she has an excuse Laugh, the girl at the drive up does not.  Also better start the snowblower, but I think I have a bit before I need that. At least I hope.

Good morning. It's 55° with 100% humidity. The high will be 82° and it'll be mostly cloudy.

Nothing on my schedule today but rest. Yesterday was a busy day. I may work on the upper portion of the grain elevators main building later.

Lunchtime!

Make that Pizza and a Beer for me, Zoe dear!

Sold all that Z scale stuff today, but did not quite get the money I was hoping to get. That stuff is just too old (and worn) to be able to retrieve big money for it. The amount I got for it is OK, so I am not really unhappy with it. It does influence my plans, though, which I will have to "scale" down a bit.

My friend Lothar took me to the place, which is half an hour´s dive from our town. With the prices of gas at close to $ 9 a gallon now, I could not afford to drive there by myself. On the way, the two of us developed a business idea. Lothar commutes more than 3 hours a day to and from work, and, while he likes his job, he is sick and tied of spending so much precious time on the road. There is a need to change that! All we need is about 1 million $$$$ to build and operate a scale 1 model railroad, following the prototype of a local branch line closed in the early 1960´s. We need a hall of about 2,500 sq. ft. for that and year´s time to build that up. It would not compete with Miniatur Wunderland, as we don´t want a show layout, but show people, what real railroad operation was like in those days. Break-even would be reached at 40,000 visitors per year, with 80,000 visitors a year we´d be able to pay a nice dividend! Key problem is to find the right location - a location that already attracts a lot of folks and where this layout would be a perfect addition to make the place even more attractive. Maybe a crazy thought, but, well, I´ve got the time to investigate into such a venue.

Have a splendid day, folks!

Good Morning all,

Looks like we will be in the 30’s starting Sunday evening…

Some of my friends including the LHS have fallen victim to the ransom virus.  Something tells me they are not running the full versions of either MacAfee or Norton, I’ll find out tonight as I drive around town to collect laptops for reformatting and re-install of the operating system.

I pulled the house plants back inside last night for winter is fast approaching…..

Evenin all

12 hour day, wow, I'm beat!

Ray, you got Meeces?? Wanna borrow midnight? He loves Meeces,,,,to Pieces even!!

We had Meeces in the house when we 1st moved here 2 years ago,,didn't take long for that to be over!!

This in their normal activity,,,let a mouse in, and suddenly  2 Ginsu wielding assassins emerge from the fur coats!! Big Smile

Ken, Jungle Pam? Wow! Her legs look to be about a quarter mile long! If I would have known about her back in the day, I may not have paid so much attention to the silly Snake & Mongoose rivalry!Mischief

And yes, I have been to Kansas. My sister moved there when I was 15 to attend KU. As we are unloading the U-Haul van, we get to stop and watch a twister, about a mile away. I asked her, are you sure you want to stay here?  She did for the next 4 years,,,she got her degree and moved back to the right coast with us!

Got stopped by a Kansas State policeman  on a subsequent visit, for going over 100 mph in a 70 zone, between Lawrence and Topeka. Got a verbal warningWink  He took pity on a kid who lived in an area where cars couldn't go that fast for more than a mile or 2 at a time! (He had followed me almost 10 miles!)  Somehow I don't think I could ever be that lucky today!

Time for the rack fellas,,,,5:30 comes awful early  Cya tomorrow!Big Smile

NCE über alles! Thumbs Up

Evening All,

Man am I beat. We did a bunch of fall cleaning inside and outside and of course the light fixture in the laundry room quit working (new light bulbs did not help. I put a meter on it and no power). So off to Lowes I go and then installed that and now it works.

I go back to w**k tomorrow afternoon so I think I will sleep in some tomorrow. Yesterday I installed quite a few lights in buildings. In fact all I have left to do is the meat packing plant (3), farm house (1), and put a second light  in the engine house. I will do a night running video when it's complete. If I say so myself it looks pretty darn cool.

Cape Jim- I got 5mm yellow LED's (modeling 40's) with the resistors already attached. I soldered long wires to the lights and ran the wires to a Miniatronics Power distribution Board ( 1-24 dual wire connections and 1-12 dual wire connections) (PDB-1 & PDB-2). I power each board with a Radio Shack 12V power supply. It is not hard to do but tends to be very time consuming depending on how many buildings you have. This system will also work with Tortoises.

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.
