I guess I'm getting slow in my old age, but I just noticed that where any of us are from is no longer available. Or am I just not looking in the right place. I was always interested where we were all from.

Caboose hobbies finally has the railbars I have been waiting for for the past 4 months in stock....  Or so it says at their website...  I just ordered 20 packages to have enough to finish all the trackwork on the layout....  Any bets on whether they actually have that many or not?

If your luck is like mine they have eight packs. Not near enough!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of blueberry pancakes real NYS Maple syrup, bacon, and some dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR mug.

Currently 75°F under mostly sunny skies here in the Finger Lakes region.  The high will be 83°F, give or take a few degrees with some passing thunderboomers tonight which I plan to sleep through.

Meeting at the Museum tonight....  We have to take care of business you know.  Meaning riding the trains.  We also should have a photo shoot of the 45 tonner out along the line.

Hope you all have a great day!

Jeff I know it is tough for your mom to be going to a nursing home, but sometimes it is the best for care.

It's not her first trip to a nursing home. That's how she knows she won't like it. I don't like it either. Those long halls kill me.

  Morning All,

70 right now with an expected high of 101. Last night around midnight we had a rare thunderstorm. It cooled things down a bit and we could really use the rain. The floor in my bedroom of course could not. As I hit the sack around 10:45 by the time I woke up from the thunder, the rain was coming in my bedroom window and soaked the carpet. Oh well It dried out already.

The developement that we live in is the last inhabited area for about 13 miles south, and we are on the extreme south end. This area is famous for its wild horses, and we get quite a few in the early morning hours eating our grass. I do not mind too much, but the horse poop is something else. Yesterday I noticed a city street cleaning truck in the neighborhood, but he seemed to be avoiding all the piles of horse droppings in the street. I wonder what he was cleaningConfused

Report from oncologist on my wife is, she has a very rare form of Lymphoma, only about 20 cases a year in the US. Preliminary treatment will be 5 drugs administered every three weeks for about six months. BUT hewants us to go to Stanford med center for a consult first. Sometimes docs are a pain.

Early shift today, so should be home around 6:00

Jeff I know it is tough for your mom to be going to a nursing home, but sometimes it is the best for care.

Have a good day everyone.

 Morning Folks

 Flo, Coffee to go pleases.

Off again today and have to go back to the VA Hospital. Yesterday I took 2 classes at the VA, one on eating right for diabetic's and the other one on foot care.

Today I will have a 1 on 1 consult with a RN about being diabetic and then see the Surgeon's. They want to see how the toe is healing.

Well, I got to get going.

Good morning. It's 80° and already feels like 87°. Humidity is 90%. It'll be mostly cloudy with a small chance of rain. The high will will be 94° with an index of 106°.

The parish is out here doing road work which should have be done years ago. But it is finally being done, or at least most of it. They're making plenty of racket and having a high old time doing it.

Early this morning I made a short video showing the newly rebuilt FP7 in action. The howl as the locos pass the camera is from the Atlas GP40 on point. It's all original with the exception of the body which is Bachmann. The motor in it is on the way out and will have to be replaced at some point.

No plans for today except for cleaning up my work area a bit. The work of the last couple of days has made a real wreck of it.

Good Morning!!!

Double BBQ bacon cheeseburger with Swiss cheese, an order of onion rings and a Dr Pepper please. Thank you.

As I look at the radar, if we don’t get some rain……God is mad at me or someone around here.

Happy Anniversary (yesterday) Charlie!!! Glad you stuck around.Cake

Only thing I can say about up/downgrade of sight, is I can’t just jump to page….say 23 of the diner. But I can click on that arrow and backup a pa…Confused..wait. IIRC, if we only progressed a couple three pages in my absence, then I coupld go to that page. If there were more, I had to do the same thing. BUT! This one I have to do it anyway over five pages.

Garry- LaughWhy yes there are a couple good Italian restaurants. Great food I hear as long as you don’t try and talk to the staff.Laugh

OK, yesterday Brenda sent me all over town, well actually to Lowe’s and Menard’s which are right across the street from each other, but it’s my story and I’ll embellish it as I pleaseYes, like 4 times from the phone. She had picked out a mirror, and a vanity light, one from each place. Problem was, she didn’t remember which place had what. BUT that didn’t stop her from telling me which was where until I exhausted my search and called only for her to realize after telling me I can’t miss it, it’s got to be right in front of your eyes, are you even looking? Then a photo of the area sent to her to prove it wasn’t there, prompted a call that went like….” That display doesn’t look like the one I saw the light in. Must have been at Lowe’s.” Similar fiasco over mirror but this time a Lowe’s employee didn’t know there were TWO mirror display areas, so his offer to help, only caused me a “she did it again” trip back to Menard’s, a phone call, and a “no the mirror I wanted was hanging on a cage looking door thing”. Menard’s has no hanging mirrors on display……….Back to Lowe’s. Strolled two aisles past the mirrors to the bathroom shower section and low and behold……mirrors. Yes the one she wanted was in stock. Surprisingly enough.

NEEDless to say I got very little done yesterday, but she didn’t either. I had a Church meeting and she was gonna start painting the bathroom this loooovely shade of Rare Orchid. Now she just loves to paint. She says it’s something she can do to help. Problem is I can’t do anything else while she paints because she calls for me every 5 minutes because she can’t reach something. Needs the tray refilled or needs something moved. Anyway, when I returned, several hours later, she had not painted a thing. Daughter came over, then her favorite show Criminal Minds came on so ….. I shall start trimming out momentarily. Maybe.Whistling

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Now , If they would just reinstall the post counts and date joined, that would be nice.

Geeked

I'm not a fan of post counts.  Too many people take to much pride in racking up there post counts with useless posts.   As the great Big Boy(Elliott, the reason this thread lives on) once said to me, it's not the number of posts you make but the number of quality posts that you contribute.  I agree though, the joined date would be nice to see.  They are working on fixing both from what I understand.

A person who joined 10 years ago and only has 25 posts doesn't exactly mean much. It may mean that he {or she} had 25 of your "quality" posts, but May not use this forum all that much. That doesn't help me much if i have a question and he is less than likely to answer and can't be reached for Q &A.

Someone who has 10, 000 posts in 6 years of being here frequently may have seen, heard, read or DONE the things that answer my questions. So he may have the answer to my question and are more likely to post an answer quicker than If I wait for the crickets to subside from Mr. 25-poster while waiting.

So a year of joining doesn't tell you much on how often he is at the forum alone. Neither does 10, 000 posts, but I will take the frequent visitor to the forum who may have my information.

And who are you to determine if a post is "quality" or "of value" to someone? Only the receiver of the information can determine if there is sufficient value to the posts he/she/it reads here. The ones that are not can be skipped. The ones that are of value to them may mean the world to them.

No, I have not., that is what worries me. so right now I don't know. I know he was possibly facing something,  he could just be not wanting to participate right now, you know how he "drops out". At any rate, as soon as I DO hear from him..that is he issues me a "statement" to pass along...I will pass it along to you guys. HE ALSO does NOT want anyone to worry over him and fuss {you guys know how he hates that}, but he will welcome your prayers and well wishes form this side of the pond!!!!

Ray, they are removing the asbestos from the bridge this month. Once that’s done and whatever inspections need to be done to insure it’s safe to move on the next contractor will move in and start removing the bridge. Right now it looks like it will take until April to remove everything. There is some historical preservation items that need to be saved that will take a little bit of time. I saw the story appeared in 11 newspapers around the country yesterday.

Good Morning All,

Severe thunderstorms tonight, 65F, 81% humidity, Hi today 87F.

Jeff, sorry to hear mom might have to go to a nursing home.  One of the NMRA meetings I went to a guy brought in some of his Frankenstein locomotives.  One was 5 Gp9’s combined into about 18” long locomotive another one was a double cab SW-2 and he combined a passenger car with a SD-9.  When asked why he simply stated he wanted to see if he could do it….

Garry, so I get set up with this friend (Dorothy) of a friend (Ginny) for a blind date and we decide to meet at the Zoo.  So I agree to meet Dorothy in the parking lot and I described my vehicle and she informs me she will be driving a white Chevy blazer.  So I’m waiting in the Zoo parking lot and this white Chevy blazer pulls in drives past me, slams on its breaks, backs up and pulls in next to my truck.  Out of the blazer walks this drop dead beautiful girl, I mean she looks like she just finished a sports illustrated swimsuit photo shoot.  I walk up and introduce myself and we start chatting.  I give her the flowers I brought and as we were getting ready to walk into the Zoo I mention that I’m going to have to call Ginny and thank her for introducing us.  The girl I’m walking with asks: “Who’s Ginny?”  Embarrassed I finally ask her name and find out it’s not Dorothy.  The girl asked my name and demanded my phone number and said that she was taking me out to dinner one night this week because anyone with the guts to walk up to her out of the blue with flowers is way more interesting than anyone she has met before in her life.  Lucky for me she was a Zoo employee and was arriving for work and she excused herself. So after a few moments I see another white Chevy blazer pull in and park.  This time I just stood next to my truck until she introduced herself to me as Dorothy, Ginny’s friend.  I had spoke to her on the phone and jokingly referred to her as a vampire so she had brought me a small container of garlic plants as a joke.  We went into the Zoo, spent the better part of a day together and have hit it off ever since.  I did go out with the first girl, but she was a few years younger than me and we really didn’t have that much in common, but had a good time.

Evenin'

Janie, just a cup of decaf for me please.

Jeffrey, sorry to hear your mother may be nursing home bound, but I guess you expected that might be the case........

I actually got a compliment from the MMR today.  I was showing him the wall I made for the mold.  he had asked several questions about it and I told him I had about 6 evenings worth of work into the little thing he was holding in his hand.  He gave me a strange look and said, 6 evening in to this?  I said, yes.  Each of the rows of stones had to put in order and said I put a strip of white glue on the plywood, then used the tip of an exacto knife to find a suitable sized grain of sand and then carefully put it in place.  All of a sudden his eyes got wide and he looked at me and said, Each one of the stones was put in place individually?  I thought you just dumped the stones on it and glued them....  I had him look carefully at the picture and notice how each row of Cobblestones is perfectly aligned....  He looked at the photo, then at the block in his hand and then at me and said, "Wow!"  He is not one to rave about peoples modeling.......  I should be getting the mold finished sometime next week.  I need to start writing down all the things I have done so far.  One area I can get some good points on is the Prototype research for the building.  The fact that I photographed and measured the building will help.

Tomorrow will be the August meeting of the Museum out at the RR.  I bet we will be getting a preview of a what we may be using for Diesel Days....  The official announcement and unveiling of something they are being very secretive about will be done at the picnic this Saturday.

Lee has mentioned the Hojack Bridge outside of Rochester, NY that is being removed by CSX over the next few months.  We are pretty sure the announcement will have something to do with the 45 Tonner at least and may have something to do with the Hojack Bridge......????  The Hojack bridge was how they got coal hoppers over to Beebee Station.

Hope you all have a great night!

Howdy ...

Big celebration! CN Charlie says he has been here 5 years today in the Diner.   Happy Anniversary to CN Charlie! Time for RBF's and cake!

I see the wreck train was dispatched to Curt's layout. An FP7 and a 4-4-0 collided. Looks like the 4-4-0 crew will be in trouble for failure to keep the right-of-way clear.

Jeff ... Your Proto/Atlas/Athearn FP7 is remarkable. Sundown Shops out did itself.

JimCG ... Gld to see you here again.

bpgp40 Bob ... I was pleased to see you here. It's been a long time please return often.

Barry .. Glad the pain was not serious, but you definately were wise to get immediate attention in case it was something very serious.

Galaxy ... Have you heard from Ulrich?

Vincent .... You said you were going to try to fit Stewart shells on P1000 chassis, and then sell them. I would suggest simply selling as is. You may get more money if you are auctioning on eBay, and it will save time you can use for other projects.

Todd ..... I'm thinking if I ever visit your town, i would not want to go to the Chinese restaurant. Is there  a good Italian place?

Ray ... Solar panels? Did you say you were getting some?

Darren ... your efforts to upgrade the forum are appreciated.

Lee .... That is remarkable you and Dorothy met at a zoo. ... Did you monkey around at first?.... Or were you necking at the giraffe  habitat?

CN Charlie ......  My conversion to DCC has been mostly non-sound and mostly diesel as I try to get operational with DCC. I'll be interested in how you do installing the sound decoder in the 0-8-0. You are correct about the 0-8-0 and 0-6-0 being smooth runners. I have one of each also. My only sound units so far are BLI Blue Line E7A's (one pair), a Genesis F3 A/B set, and a P2K E8 with MRC "drop in" sound decoder made for that model.  I have about 35 locomotives with decoders now. I just installed non-sound decoders in a P1K F3 ABBA set.  .... Since you like CN, I will mention, I like how my shares of Canadian National stock are doing this year.

Regarding my recovery from surgery. I'm progressing nicely, but not 100%. However, I'm pleased to say, I will be able to take a trip this weekend to Alabama. My mother there is celebrating her 93rd birthday. We'll have family members coming from  PA. MI, and KY to join those in AL. It should be a good time.

I hope more MIA's find their way back to the Diner.

Happy Model Railroading.

Back again,

I got that Loksound decoder installed and I must say I'm impressed. The motor control without any adjustments is amazing. The sound is good too. It is a Select Micro so no problem fitting it into the tender.

Hey, the thing that impresses me is that you are able to make the Frankenlocos work (amazingly well), no matter what parts/pieces you combine to make them! Bow

That's where the personal touch comes in. The project is nothing without it. Everybody modifies the parts a different way. No two people do it the same. I don't use a razor saw, hobby knife or even a pocket knife. Closest thing to a knife that I use is a pair of scissors and I don't use those for cutting shafts. Hottest thing I use is a soldering gun. Second hottest is a large hot melt glue gun. That baby can cause second degree burns. Wanna guess what I use for cutting plastic and metal parts?

All my Frankenlocos were built with the same things in mind. #1 It gives me something to do. #2 It's something I enjoy doing. #3 They're mechanically different from lookalike units. #4 I have good running locos where there WAS a bunch of junk.

My mother is still in the hospital. There's talk of her being sent to the nursing home in Leesville but so far it's just talk.

Jeff, hope things have been improving for your mother - is she still in the hospital? I was just explaining to the guy next to me here at my WiFi about Frankenlocos (he got a chuckle from some of your photos of the FP7 project/challenge). Little does he imagine all the things you have created from the Sundown shops... Smile, Wink & Grin

Good Evening, Chloe - what have they done with the place? I feel like I'm at Sesame Street or something like that, with all the simplified format and all, and the LARGER print (hey, I can get out my glasses if I need to, no need to magnify all the text...). Oh, yeah, dessert - I'll have a hot fudge sundae and a Santa Fe mug of coffee, please. Thanks, at least the food is still yummy.

Thought I needed to stop by and remind you all what I look like (glad I don't look like one of those "Weebles" icons that they have for a generic avatar - sheesh!). Have been way too busy with computer 'adjustments' (upgrade of external drive to 'Mountain Lion' (10.8.0  - remind me not to go with the "point zero" edition again...). Finally got that w**king okay. Then I slipped and bought a friend's used iPad (more techy time to adjust...), and now I come in and find the forum has been replaced by its kindergarden twin? Clown At least, I think our emoticon abbreviations are the same (well, we'll see when I post this thing, anyway) And good to see that they changed the default about email replies to 'unchecked'. Smile

[Edit:] Cool! - looks like when you post, you go directly back to your last page (instead of having to go through another step. Thumbs Up

Garry, sounds like you've been more productive in your recuperation than I have without recuperating. Thumbs Up

Curt, I think it was you said something about wishing they still had the post counts - I wish they had them, but mostly for myself, so I have a guesstimate of how long I've been hanging around the Diner, as well as how (in)frequently I've been posting. Do wish they still had at least the 'joined' date, at a minimum. (IT folks, you listening?)

Have been keeping various Diners in my AngelAngel, though I am likely way behind on any current concerns (other than a couple/three who've emailed me). Maybe can catch up tomorrow. I saw that Ulrich is MIA lately, so will add that to my list. My friend, if you're peeking in the window, take care of yourself and get back in here as soon as you can. Thumbs Up

I'll be at the RC for a bit until it's time to head for home.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Maybe someone can answer this question about the new format. I like receiving the Diner and WPF postings in my Email but it appears that if I select Email Notifications I will then get everything in this section of the forum not just what I want. Is there a way to be selective in my Email.

Under the left corner of your reply box is a box with 'Email Me Replies To This Post'. I think if you click that you should receive emails to only that post. Don't quote me on that though. You give this forum an inch it'll take a mile!

Hey guys

Well I'm going through way too many new things at once. I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 and the forum changes. I don't see the quick reply anywhere. That made it a lot easier to respond to people's posts.

I did manage to buy something (or things) train related for once. Picked up 2 Stewart/Kato F-units for $54. Both are SP black widow units, but I mainly bought them for the chassis. The shells are useable, but I may stick them on my 2 P1K F3 drives (I think I figured out a way to modify the frame and not the shells) and sell them. Guess that depends on what I get for my birthday. I asked my parents for a powered sound/dcc chassis for a stewart F and some scalecoat wash away for it. Dunno what I'll get.

I'll be in the back somewhere catching up.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good Evening!

Will be interesting to see how this post turns out with the new format. It is exactly 5 years ago today that I joined the forum largely so that I could get some great food and fellowship here in the Diner and I haven't been disappointed, well the food somehow isn't so satisfying but the fellowship is.

Sure have been a lot of faces come and go over the past 5 years. I guess I'm an infrequent regular if you know what I mean.

Barry, I sure know what you mean by an aesophogial spasm  mimicing a heart attach as my wife had one a few years ago. Nitro relieves it so it really seems like a heart attack. Are you on protein pump inhibitor drugs?

Garry, how are the decoder installs going? I'm about to put in a Loksound Select in my PK2 0-8-0. I have one of those Soundtraxx LC decoders in it now but the sound is very poor as it is old technology. It also cuts out all the time which supposedly is a problem with that decoder. I decided on the Loksound for motor control as that loco runs like the proverbial Swiss watch. So does my 0-6-0. They are both old LL versions.

Hope we here from Ulrich soon.

Lee, how is that new pup doing?  Believe it or not we have 70 plush dog toys. Wish Robbie would put them away when he plays with them. He is kind of rough with them as a terrier will so my wife is always having to sew up tears in them. Our first Westie loved to rip the squeakers out of toys. He would just spit them out and then walk away as I guess for him the toy was then dead. He got really good at it and it rarely took him more than 10 minutes to get the job done. The female we had loved to rip the limbs off toy animals. We'd find legs, wings, etc. all over the house. I guess she was just practising in case she caught the real thing.

A rainy night here so I think I'll go downstairs and tackle that decoder. It should be basically a plug 'n play but I've heard that one before.

Evening All,

Had Pork Chops for supperDinner. My son had his hearing today and the judge accepted  the  plea deal so he has a appointment with his parole officer tomorrow. Hopefully he learned his lesson. After that I went up to the LHS and the main discussion today was PRR LCL container cars. I told him about a friend (Lee) that had made a bunch for me. When I go next week I will bring one of  my cars and show him.

My new BLI NW2 is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I listened to a 3 or 4 minute sound clip of it and it sounds great. We had some extra money come in so I ordered  it.

I was cleaning track today with my CMX car that my FP 7A was pushing. It was on the back side behind the Ice House and I heard a thunk and a grinding sound. It seems my Spectrum 4-4-0 was sitting behind the Ice House. Oops..I had forgot about it being there. It destroyed the front coupler on the FP7, so I had to fix that after cleaning track. Note to self.....Always check track before cleaningSmile

Barry- I'm glad it sounds like you received a clean bill of health.

Ray- Sounds like you had fun today.

Maybe someone can answer this question about the new format. I like receiving the Diner and WPF postings in my Email but it appears that if I select Email Notifications I will then get everything in this section of the forum not just what I want. Is there a way to be selective in my Email.

Hope everyone has a great night and prayers for those in need.

The FP7 is done and is back in service. I guess it's an Atlas in name only now. Proto-Atlas or atlas 2000? Mustn't forget it also has a couple of Athearn parts. It runs even better now than it did when I got it. In the first photo below you'll see a little red rectangle at one end. That believe it or not is the decoder. Yep, I searched through my stuff here and dug out a Z Scale Digitrax decoder. It works much better than that old Bachmann lightboard decoder.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, a tall glass of lemonade would be great now.  Thanks!

I see they have put some of things back the way it used to be.....  Very good!  Gettin' better I guess.

Lee, I think you asked for me to send along anything I found locally about the Hojack Bridge Demolition.  Rochester Democrat & Chronicle: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/201208150500/NEWS01/308150015   I also have been getting a lot of emails from the Museum people along with links to some old photos of the bridge (Including a couple that show our RG&E 45 tonner switching from Beebee Station on the last run across the bridge back when).  Throw me a PM and I will send you some copies of the emails and the URL for the photos if you like.

Had an enjoyable day with Master Model Railroader #483 today.  He helped me install the upper staging, then we discussed how to make the mold, and then went to lunch.  Spent some time in a antique store downtown here and toured some Rochester and Eastern Rapid Railway (Trolley) artifacts that still survive just outside of Geneva.

Hope you are having a great day!

Jeff, once I'm satisfied w/ a remotoring/ driveline set w/ doublesided tape, I will permanently mount using RTV Black. Nice isolation and vibration dampening.

Still don't like the no post count, location and join date thing. I've been waiting anxiously to see you hit an all

Yeah, I'd like to use double sided tape and RTV but I can't use what I don't have. With no money I can't go get it either. On the post count, I was wondering how long it would take me to reach 30,000. On my own forum I'm at 24,325.
