Morning Coffee in the diner
Posted by galaxy on Thursday, May 10, 2012 9:15 AM

Morning, the coffee PULEEEZE...

I found this: It is in German, and I found it due to a travel panel on the AOL startup menu of a trip made by Jim Calio:

http://www.hsb-wr.de/

Maybe Ulrich can chime in here and offer his impressions!

You all can hunt/poke/click away to the links and look at the purdy pictures! You don't need to know German to see the steamers of your in that country.

Have errands to do of course!

Off and running...as soon as I am awake...

Good Morning Modelers!

It's 54F and clear heading for the low 80's but needed rain is scheduled to find it's way here on Friday.  We are now listed in Stage #1 Drought restrictions which is nothing but does show it's a bit dry around here too.

Well, the bunny came back into the yard yesterday and when the wife spooked us we ran straight for the shed where he hide often during the day.  Since they can see ahead the bunny did nit notice the chicken wire I put across to holes and *BANG* head first into it.  The wife said he bounce straight backwards about 1 -to- 2 feet and then panicked until he got out of the yard to find another safe spot.  Neither of the adult rabbits have been seen since the bunny showed up so I think either the local Fox or one of the Coyotes might have gotten them.  They do tend to keep the rabbit population is serious check and even though this baby bunny is cute it is starting to be a pest so it's own it's own to stay safe as I've block it's only safe spot in our yard from access now.

Coffee is on me today...

Packer

Jeff, I thought Ken was talking about the Santa Fe F9s you have. Looks like your F3 is a different phase than mine. is yours a stewart as well? Some of the very latest F3s looked like F7s, it gets kind of confusing with rebuilding and such as parts get switched around.

My F3B in the photo is a Varney unit and is indicative of phase I of the F3 development. My Stewart F3A is an early phase II. My P2K F3B is an early phase II. My F7A is an early phase I model. These phase differences are what are visible on your models. There were other phase differences internally that naturally aren't visible on your models and therefore aren't listed here.

EMD F3 Phases.

Phase 1: High flat topped 36" roof fans. Top third body panel had chicken wire in vent openings only. Short rear vent panel. Center third body panel with three equally spaced port-hole windows. Phase 1 F3 units are identical to the F2 in outward appearance except in number board size.

Phase II - Early: Top third body panel had full length chicken wire. Long rear vent panel. Center third body panel had two portholes, area between covered with chicken wire over four smaller rectangular openings.

Phase II - Late: Radiator fans changed to low pan-topped fans.

Phase III: Center third body panel has no chicken wire between portholes. The four rectangular opening now have louvres.

Phase IV: Chicken wire upper third panel is replaced with full length horizontal stainless steel grille.

EMD F7 Phases

Phase I - Early: Four horizontal louvred openings on center body panel. 36" dynamic brake fan if fitted with dynamic brakes. Square cab door corners with kick plates on steps beneath. Short wing window with square corners. Single drip strip over cab windows and door.

Phase I - Late: Upper grille changed to vertical-slotted Farr-Air grilles. Cab doors became round-cornered and the kick plates were removed. Wing windows became larger with round corners. Two drip strips, one over cab windows second over door.

Phase II: All upper grilles were vertical Farr-Air type. Center car body louvres became vertical slotted. 48" dynamic brake fan was introduced. In October 1952 rear body overhang disappeared.

EMD F9: The F9 can be reliably distinguished from a late F7 only by the addition of an extra filter grille ahead of the front porthole on the side panels on A units.

This is one of the F9 shells I got from Ken. The ONLY reliable identifying feature is pointed out.

Morning All,

Got some errands to run this morning then I will be soldering power leads and hooking them up. This is probably my least favorite thing in MRR'ing. Oh well it has to be done. Depending on how that goes I plan on re-testing all the service leads then doing a general reset and re-assigning track numbers in a consistent manner. Right now the numbers are jumbled because of my putting in different service tracks at different times.

Oz Jim- Sorry to hear about your Mother's friend. That loco looks great.

Lee- Glad they are checking everything at one time. The TT bridge has Auto Reversing built in. I have powered about 50% of the service leads and the only time I have had to change anything (switch leads) is the initial wire hookup to the control box. Of course you know how well I do with understanding electrical things so I hookup one track, power up, test, move to the next one. This is very time consuming but I know it's right.

Everyone take care and prayers for those in need.

Good Morning All,

Went to the hospital Tuesday night to pick up my 24-hr urine bucket for Sundays test and found out the endocrinologist and the endocrine surgeon doubled my tests, not to mention they want a full blood test (12 vials?) Monday morning to compare the blood levels with the urine test.  Nurses said they are only pulling 12 vials and they will cross reference the blood work so I don’t need 24 vials pulled. I guess the values in your blood can change every 4-day so they want a fresh set with the urine.  The nurses at the hospital told me to drink as much water as possible before I come in because they are taking that much blood, but promised they wouldn’t take more than a pint, LOL.  Doc wants to do a full thyroid work up as well since they will have the hood open for the parathyroid they might as well fix the thyroid if they find anything wrong. At least they are using common sense and logic.

Curt are you using an automatic reversing circuit on the turntable deck to keep the polarities constant when you turn the locomotive?  If not I glued a train figure at each end of the turn table bridge, one has a red shirt and one has a green shirt to denote the polarities of the rail.

Evening folks,

Vincent,

I am talking N scale here Wink Problem with code 80 in N scale is it looks like 200lb rail... code 55 looks much better more like 130lb rail. My yards would be hidden anywho. In the photos below you can see how code 80 looks. Smile

I picked up a Kato N scale Dash 9 from John the "N Scale Addict" that he weathered. I also got one of his lumber loads he makes. It arrived last week here in Australia.

Cheers,

OzJim

EDIT- Looks like I've got top...have at it...

Morning guys

Looks like I beat Galaxy and Bill this morning. I usually don't sleep very long when it rains, but I feel fine for some reason.

James, Sorry to hear about your friend's mom. As for the new layout, I would use the code 80 on the main and code 55 in the yard. The other way would look kinda backwards.

Jeff, Be careful with your foot, I take it you didn't feel it when all it happened? I thought Ken was talking about the Santa Fe F9s you have. Looks like your F3 is a different phase than mine. is yours a stewart as well? Some of the very latest F3s looked like F7s, it gets kind of confusing with rebuilding and such as parts get switched around.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Time for me to call it a night. After wrapping up my outdoor activities earlier I found to my dismay that I was leaving bloody boot prints on the carpet - again. Seems that while I was either getting down on my back or struggling back to a standing position during the oil change on my van I ripped open the edges of the wound on what's left of my right ankle. The dressing was completely soaked so I had to cut it off then clean the area with alcohol soaked gauze pad. I got the bleeding stopped OK and put on a new dressing. It's getting to where it's getting hard to move around without this happening. Oh well, life goes on. See y'all tomorrow.

Hi Folks, more bad news from the land down under...

A friend of mines mother was tragically killed by her husband yesterday morning. They had been local residents for over 20 years, her Husband was last night charged with murder.

Their place is only around half a mile from my home...

Ashamed Ashamed

Trying to move on, I'm considering a whole new layout about 7'x14' using code 55. I still haven't decided if I'll go with Atlas, Micro Engineering or Peco yet. I would re-use my code 80 Peco in the yards to save money.

Check back later.

Finally got around to changing the oil in the van today. I can tell when it needs it. The light tapping of some of the valves starts sounding like castanets. Let it go for a few more weeks and it could probably stay in tune for the Mexican Hat Dance. A five quart bottle of Pennzoil 10-W30, a filter and a couple cans of Restore USA Engine Restorer and it's happy as a clam and running quiet again. When I first got the van I tried 10-W40 in it thinking that it would be better for an older engine. The dang thing would never stop clattering. Drained that out and replaced it with 10-W30 and the difference was night and day. All that clatter reminded me of some old BN U-boats that came through town many years ago, years before it became BNSF. You could hear those things clattering seven blocks away! The way they looked they were probably headed for a scrap line.

Vincent I hope you do! Smile, Wink & Grin Other wise you might as well become a Trekkie. Sigh I forgot to mention in the PM that the new Stewart's are at K-10 Model trains. I think they are F-9's. We will need Jeffery to chime in here. They where are the same engines I sent him.

And what's wrong with being a Trekkie?Question The F units you sent me are F3's. High wall fans. The fans on F7's and F9's are at roof level.

I was able to contact athearn a bit earlier and they are sending another motor for my Superpower F7, in addition to some other parts for some of my other locos. Kudos to them for doing that.

Ken, Now that you've chimed in, I think I get what Rob was getting at now. Those are indeed F9s, and you said they were the same thing as what Jeff has and you posted? That could work since I have a friend who models ATSF and has a staff of stewart F-unit shells. Maybe Larry's stuff bursting into flames is karma in action?

Garry, I was thinking of calling them instead. I've had better luck with calling other manufacturers as opposed to emailing them. The only thing is they are closed ATM, I'll try calling them after work tomorrow.

Vincent ... I suggest not giving up. ... Go to the Stewart website. ... They should have a "contact us" button...... Type; " I just received a new Stewart F3, and the truck detail parts were not included. I am willing to buy a set, but I can not afford the $10.00 shipping and handling cost. I am currently working my way through college. Would you consider waiving the $10.00 fee?. Thanks for your time. .... Sincerely, Vincent _____, (street address) " .... Try it. You have nothing to lose doing it. I bet they say "yes", and they may not even charge anything for the parts.

Not to be impolite, but I'm kind of clueless at what you are trying to get at?

Well I dug through the box that my Stewart F3B came in and couldn't find the detail set that goes for the trucks. I looked at stewart's site and they sell them. I'd buy but what's driving me away is the 10 dollar shipping. 10 bucks to ship something that could go in a padded envelope? Wonder if anyone has a spare (or a spare set of completed stewart F sideframes)?

Hey guys.

I just got back from work. One of the girls there has been creeping me out a bit lately. She constantly stares at me, and if I catch her looking she smiles a bit. Granted she is kind of cute, but the starting thing is wierd. I did confront her about that by saying "I know I look good, but why do you cnonstantly have to stare?" She laughed and ask why I was starting at her. We don't talk a whole lot because I'm pretty shy around new people, and I'm trying not to get too attrached to co-workers (the last 4 didn't go so well)

Curt, I used to use melatonin, but I use something a bit stronger now. I usually am in bed by 10-11 so I usually get 6-7 hours of sleep. Nice modeling by the way.

Afternoon All,

My back is a tad bit sore right now. I just finished installing 15 service tracks. I cleaned the track and I will hookup the power to them tomorrow. I got power attached to the 2 RH tracks without much effort and tested with a loco so I am happy about that. The pictures below show how the arrangement will be.

Broadway Lion- Nice shot of your layout.

Ken- Another nice shot of  your layout. I'm glad LarryDevil is gone.

Todd- You surprised me this morning. I could not believe your detachment. Of course I thought you were talking about YOH until I reread your post and realized you were talking about your MIL. Stupid meDunce. I will say prayers for your MIL and your family.

Barry- I will continue prayers for your cancer free results.

 Flo, Coffee please.

Not much of a day off. Today is my day off, yet I have to go to St Louis for training. Sigh It is a class about E Commerce's. In other words the customer can pick the services they want on line, build there on ticket. I think I smell a rat. I will just about bet they will not pay us any commission for helping these customer when they come into the shop. We will see.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of Buckwheat pancakes and lots of dark amber NYS Maple Syrup to pour on it, a side order of bacon, and several cups of dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug.  What?  It'll be OK, blood sugar was 84 this morning!

Darren, around my neighborhood we have a "Large" bunny problem!  The little $@%%!@? hold meetings every evening on my front lawn!  Unfortunately firing a gun in the city is not allowed, so we just put up with them most of the time. Whistling  I live right at the edge of the city limits and there is a large city park just down the street and farm land nearby, so trying to move them would be futile.........

Todd, is your Better Half's family related to "Mama" from the Carol Burnett Show?  Sounds like you all are in for an unfortunate "FUN" time.  This too will pass and then you don't have to be nice to any of them (except the other half, of course) again!  Oh, Vicki Lawrence just did a show here in Geneva last week.  i didn't go, but I heard it was fabulous!

Bill, by the looks of the work gang photo, it appears they just got their paychecks!  Those were the "good old days" we keep hearing about.

Best get a move on I think.  Have more stuff to get done today.

Good morning. It's 69° and mostly cloudy. The high will be 82° and there's a 20% chance of rain.

No particular plans for today. I have to run a couple of errands for my father later. For now I have to go and prepare my mothers breakfast.
