Good Morning!! Coffee please and of course the Sunday Breakfast BUFF-ayyyy. Thanks.

Snow likely, mainly after noon. Increasing clouds, with a high near 39. West northwest wind between 5 and 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Bill- Thanks for the photo of the bridge. It is similar to the one I am making out of two under girder kits with supports like the ones on the right. Something I personally hadn’t seen until that picture. Thanks.

Well, today I probably should do our taxes. Seems I had to do them last year too. HmHmm. Anyway, I have a lot of straightening up to do around here. I did get into the train room yesterday. There are a ton of cobwebs. I’ll be a week just cleaning the thing up.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Happy SOLDIERS DAY ! .......... (March Forth) ............ Whistling..... Oh, never mind.......

Laugh

Curt .... Your buildings and layout look very good!

Lee ... Good to see you. Was the tragic school shooting a few days ago near you?

YouGottaWanta .... Long tome - No see. .... Keep in touch. You friends in the Diner care about you.

V8 and Lion .... You were talking about H&HS ads opposing tobacco smoking in CA. Here is my understanding. The Tobacco Master Settlement means  the tobacco companies are sending money to state governments and not H&HS. The money to the states is to pay for higher Medicaid spending attributed to health problems caused by smoking. It is shameful to see H&HS wasting money because that department causes most of the federal deficits. Some of the same people opposed to tobacco are trying to legalize pot.

V8 (again) .... How is this for high speed rail?

The E5 locomotives were produced in the late 1930's and could go up to 120 mph. The train is the  Twin Cities Zephyr. I used to ride that train in my youth when I lived in IL. It's schedule had it traveling 100 mph in parts of its daily trip. Illinois Central, Santa Fe and other railroads also had passenger trains going that fast on their schedules.

All of this was done in the private sectors without taxpayer funding. In 1950, US railroads had the best passenger trains in the world. That was not good enough for our government which implemented policies making passenger trains unprofitable. Government funded highways and airports causing loss of business while government did things to raise the railroads' costs for operating the passenger trains. Government meddling put passenger trains out of business. Eventually, Congress created Amtrak to replace private sector passenger trains. At inception, Amtrak drastically cut service. Congress expects Amtrak to break even while Congress has done everything it could to make it absolutely impossible for Amtrak to break even.

That is one reason why I model passenger trains in the 1950's. I stopped the clock before government destroyed a great network of passenger trains.

Todd ... We don't have Menards. The closest home improvement store is Lowe's in Murray. However, the bridge collapse changed that.  It used to be a half hour away, but now it is 1 1/2 hours away. ... Alternatively, I go east 45 minutes to Lowes in Hopkinsville.

Good morning. It's 36° and sunny. High today is due to be 70°.

Nothing planned for today except try to rest and recover from the past couple of days. Haven't been able to get much sleep lately. Only got two or three hours last night.

Morning All,

Well the darn animals woke me at 6 AM today (was not happy). Today's temp is supposed to be 65 F and we have already had rain. Don't worry for us though, by Thursday it's back to 80 F. Thanks to everyone for your kind words on my modeling. I'm trying to decide (scenery wise) what to put next to the coaling tower when it is back in. Right now I'm leaning towards a small hill and a ton of trees (already have). I w**k tonight and a friend from the club may come over for a bit today to run trains in the afternoon.

Garry- Isn't that true about most things?. When the government (any level) gets involved to "fix" a problem then the problem usually becomes worse.

Amen to that.

Curt,  You are going like gang busters.  The photos are great.  Have a good operating session.

Ulrich,  I always have to remind myself that your layout is not huge.  You photograph in a way that makes it look much deeper.Thumbs Up

Ray,  Speaking of "WOW",  I am impressed with your detail.

Jeffrey,  I want a lawn chair on that deck.  Looks like a good place to enjoy the sun.Cool

Galaxy,  I am still looking for some photos.  Your links are great.

We had a fun operating session yesterday.  When we arrived,  the owner of the layout had preassigned us, so I dispatched and Larry worked with a new operator on an extra. Fun time.  Next month is Sound Rails.  Operators from all over the US & Canada will be there.  It will be lots of fun.

Later,  Sue

Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.

Good Afternoon,

it is a somewhat dull day today. I spend all of the morning reading my son´s thesis and correcting his spelling. I tell you, it is an awesome task to read 100 pages of something you don´t understand a word about! As far as I understood it, he has developed a system to simulate the behavior of two different liquids under varying pressures and temperatures - that´s a simulation which could be used for hydro-fracking. Apparently, that has not been done before.

I also build a new module. It has no scenery, yet. I would like it to be a transition module from mountain scenery to a more urban setting, but I still need to think about it.

Sue - yup, the pictures make you think it is much bigger. As of today, the layout now measures 10´ by 6", that´d be a whopping 18´6" by 12" in HO scale. Not really that small any more.

No major activities for the rest of the day - just a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Wouldn't it be nice to get on with me neighbors
But they make it very clear they've got no room for ravers

They stop me from groovin, they bang on me wall
They're doin me crust in it's no good at all,

Lazy sunday afternoon, I've got no mind to worry, close my eyes and
Drift away

Here we all are sittin in a rainbow(do do do do)
Cor blimey hallo missus Jones hows your Berts lumbago?
I'll sing you a song with no words and no tune
I'll sing at your party while you suss out the moon, oh yeah

Lazy sunday afternoon, I got no mind to worry,
Close my eyes and drift away, yea

Aroo de do de do aroo de do de di day
Aroo de do de dum aree de de do dee

Theres no one to hear me, theres nothin to say,
And no one can stop me from feelin this way

Lazy sunday afternoon I've got no mind to worry
Close my eyes and drift away

Lazy sunday afternoon I've got no mind to worry
Close my eyes and drift a-
Close my eyes and drift away
Close my eyes and drift away   Whistling

Remember the Small Faces? 1968 ...

Have a good one!

It is a lazy day for me today. No paperwork to keep up with. No buyers and sellers squabbling in my ear. I just want to enjoy the day.

Ulrich: I love the layout shots you do. They look so big and lively. I keep expecting to see something happen.

Jeff: Ezra's yard looks like it needs a good cleaning. Great looking deadfall.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, since it's Sunday, I'll have a short stack of buttermilk pancakes w/ plenty of Northwestern local maple syrup (they do have such a thing I hope.....), side of bacon, and a few cups of fresh dripped dark roast coffee to start my day.  I'll go sit in the back to keep warm and relax.........

Today here in the Finger Lakes we are having a typical Finger Lakes type of day.  I woke up to see huge flakes of "Partly Cloudy falling from the sky and noticed about 1/2" of it on the roofs and lawns here.  While I was enjoying my second cup of (dark roast) coffee a big yellow thing came out and melted all the white stuff.  While I was typing this the yellow orb disappeared and more large flakes of Partly Cloudy started to drift down.  Right now there is both the white stuff and yellow orb at the same time....  If you don't like the weather in central NY, just wait a minute! Smile, Wink & Grin

Thank you Sue!  I managed to knock over and smash the plaster chimney THAT was separate from the powerhouse and just sitting on the hill next to it while I was fiddling with putting the downspouts in place a couple nights ago.  It broke in half! Grumpy  Picked it up and set the two halves in place.  They matched perfectly (all the parts there) so I decided to set it aside and white glue it back together later.  Later happened yesterday, at which point I put a dab of white glue on one half, then started to put them together, at THAT moment a little tiny piece fell off one of the sections and ended up on the floor.  I set the two halves down and picked up the errant chip.  Put the two halves together and while putting the little tiny chip in place the top half slipped out of my hand and fell several hundred scale feet to the concrete floor below.....  T'aint fixable no more now! GrumpyGrumpy  So I will be ordering another one just as soon as possible from Walthers "Out of Stock".  I looked up the part last night and was hoping the railbars I need to finish the small yard I just hand laid might now be in as they were supposed to be in stock on Feb. 29, and had been listed as "In Transit" for several days.  Not only are they not in stock, but it now lists them as unknown in when they will be!  Grrrrr!

I am skipping church today to get some stuff done for community groups THAT I need to get finished and out the door, so with THAT in mind, I will catch up with you later.

Isn't it amazing how a death can bring out the worst in people?

I warned the 'trainnut' friend when his mother died 3 years ago tthat when grandmother dies{who took over Mother's condo}, there'd be a war!

Suffice it to say, I was right!

Everybody should have a Living Revocable Trust that spells out what is what for their heirs right down to the penny lost inthe furnace register in 1949, as any heirs, no matter how well they get along while someone is alive, will often  fight tooth and nail to get everything if they can! AND a LRT can be administered by a Trust administrator who is from a bank, credit Union, or financial institution and independent rather than an heir who is also executor/excutrix.

Oh, well.. he wants to know where they were while he was down there in FL cleaning up after she vomited or messed herself? but that doesn't matter,....all that matters now is what they can get out of it, of course.  They think he stole the few measly bucks Gma had and is making off with it, after all she always had SOME money...

Oh well, I told him I would talk to him later when he has calmed down as he was very angry {at them} whne he called.

A day of rest for us today.

Later

My friend was not able to make it today. He was having a homeowners emergency (leaking plumbing) which of course is more important, but I was disappointed. I ended up making 2 batches of POP rocks for the upcoming scenery work. You can never have too many rocks or trees.

I have to get ready for w**k pretty soon so I will try to check in later.

Grilled burgers and a coffee refill, please.

If they can catch a flight out, my sister and eldest son will be here mid week. Guess I need to take a break and clean up the train room a bit. It's a mess down there.

Finally tried out the tile saw. All went well except one small cut which lead to another idea which will work OK for me. Real tile cutters/layers would likely scoff at it. Hmm If I had 1 extra tile, I would do it over. Anyway, ready to cut out the wood floor to expose subfloor. EEKS: was just setting tiles in place to mark floor cuts when one of hte triangle sections cracked. It is held in place by the glued-on-screen, but it broke. Can I still use it or is that a really bad idea???

Well, except for the fact I visualized excavator controls (from online) which didn't match those on my "sports car", then I guess it went OK? NOT!!! Bang Head Sheesh, nothing like having to start learning from scratch. Actually, it was worse than learning from scratch. First stump took like 20 minutes, second perhaps 10. By the 5th and largest stump (too large for this machine), I was ready to call it a day. Only 195 or so left to do. This will take some practice. That phrase about teaching an old dog new tricks comes to mind about now.

Well, almost time for evening critter rounds. Cowboy

I would NOT use the tile. It will plague you for years to come. You can separate it and grout in between the crack to seal it in, but that will just like that..a cracked tile grouted in. Otherwise water will get in the crack when cleaning the floor and will seep through and dampen the subfloor and cause MOLD, mildew and headaches if it EXPANDS the subfloor to CRACK Other tiles!!!!

Fair warning!!!

BAD IDEA!

***Galaxy, agreed! Thanks! It's on to Plan  B  "C". I'll just remove 3 tiles worth from one end and then re-cut the earlier piece I was going to fudge on. Still plenty large enough to meet any wood stove pad standards. Now to be darn careful with that other rectangular tile section until it is carefully set in place.

Good Afternoon (or maybe it's more like Evening now...) Janie - I'll have a bowl of that chili with some onions, grated cheese on it, and an order of cheesey fries to go with that. Oh, yes, and a RBF please. Thanks!

Bill T., I like that bridge/viaduct - looks like BridgeTom could have built one like that using Micro Engineering kits. Thumbs Up

Inch, sorry to hear of J-bird's doctor passing; hope her new doctor is up to speed really quick for her. Especially tough at her age. Sad On that gas station - if you're in HO scale (I think you are, right?) check out JL Innovative Design's site. Nice thing with their "Custom" stuff is, they come already painted. Check Walthers to see if things you want are on sale - sometimes some of theirs are.

Jeff, I'm guessing that to get your 'outdoor fridge' moved, it either was when you were feeling better, or you had some help from your co-responders getting it to your place. Those things are never 'light'.

Lee, I'm trying to get lessons from Curt on how to get so much MRR'ing w**k done so quickly. Lemme know if he clues you in on his secret. Smile, Wink & GrinThumbs Up

Garry, I'll respond to your "Soldiers' Day" thing as soon as I find a few tomatoes (really old tomatoes...). Whistling Hey, how much does your bridge there being out of commission play havoc with the errands and stuff you have to do? (Ah, I see you partly covered that). Careful there - I saw that SoapBox creeping out of its corner while you were "waxing eloquent" about our lovely government, regulations, and rail service (But, I wouldn't disagree with much of anything you mentioned..). Wink

Todd, I'm surprised your  MRR room still remembers you, after all the Floor Wars...Oops (Hey, I shouldn't talk...)

Sue, what's "Sound Rails" - operating session with all sound-equipped locos? Confused

Ulrich, nice song Music, though I must have missed it back then. Music

Barry, is that (allegedly...) supposed to be a 'kitty litter box' in that photo? Laugh Where do you find those ones?

Ray, that's frustrating to have that happen with your powerhouse's chimney! Sent you an e...

Rob, see if you can find online an owner's manual or UTube tutorial for your 'sportscar' model. (Hey, maybe it'd help!). As for the triangular tile, forget what I at first wrote - go with Galaxy's suggestion! (But then again, I am not a professional tile-layer, nor do I portray one online....Whistling)

Galaxy, from what I've heard, some families would fuss even over a LRT after their Grandma passes (trustee or not). People can be about as happy (or NOT) as they want to be, I've found. (Okay, SoapBox, back to your corner...) Sorta like that Lincoln quote: Whistling

  • "You can please all the people some of the time, and
  •  You can please some of the people all the time, but
  •  You can't please all the people all the time."

Maybe invite your friend over for a beverage and/or dinner - and maybe a chance for him to vent safely...

I'm glad it was just me and my brother when Dad passed. My brother  lived in Calif., and several times came to AZ to check on Dad (as well as when Dad was in an auto accident and was in ICU for a while), plus (so far as I know) he handled details of Dad's cremation and arranging for the funeral in St. Louis after Dad died. Could my brudder have taken more than his share? Maybe, but he had less reason to (he retired at age 55, and my brother's older than me). I was pleased that Dad's funeral and details went smoothly and that I got a chance to see some family members (though in less-than-optimal circumstances) again. That I know of it, no LRT - heck I don't even know if Dad had an up-to-date will.

S'cuse my rambling. I'll be at the window booth, watching the northbound train passing by.

[Edit]: and it looks like I have the TOP, so Janie, start my tab, please.

Blessings and prayers for a good evening for all you Diners,

Jim in Cape G.

Evenin' folks,

Janie, just a decaf for me.  I'll go in the back and just sit for a while.......

GrumpyGrumpyGrumpy  I'm typing this on my laptop at the moment.....  I think the main hard drive on my old Mac G5 is dying!  Has all the earmarks of it at least.  Computer completely locked up on me this afternoon.  Couldn't force quit the programs that were up, couldn't get anything but the spinning wheel, so I waited about 15 minutes to see if it would come back up... It didn't.  I had to use the power button to power down.  Not a good thing to do on the Mac, but nothing else worked at all.  Waited a while and powered it back up.  Chime and Mac icon came up, and then got the blue screen......  Went and had supper and checked from time to time.  It finally did, little by little come back to life, but it is running very, very slowly and by spurts.  I am right now hoping I can keep it going long enough to save all of the files, not already backed up to the second hard drive.  It is copying, but is just crawling along.

Guess I may have to do the unthinkable and go ahead and open up my House secured loan again.  I need to check with my credit Union, but I am pretty sure I can still transfer money from it.  If I do that I might just as well call the roofer and have him start on the roof this spring.  The loan has been all of 3.75% so it really cost me much and I can have it completely paid off by this fall with no problem.  Sure felt good not to have any debt for the last 11 months............  Will probably go for a top of the line iMac.  It will set me back a bit, but I do love my Macs and the new iMac is faster and will have more Ram and hard drive space than I have on the G5.  The G5 has 1Tb Hd in it plus the 160 Gb main HD and sports 2 Gig of Ram as well.  It has served me very well since I got it in the Fall of 2004 and has been running 14 or more hours a day almost every day.  This is the first problem I have ever had in those 8 years............  Just hoping I can save everything I need.  It has been moving data for about 45 minutes and has gotten 3.34 GB of the 27.98 GB done.  Normally it would be finished in bout 10 minutes or less.

Catch you all later!

Good Evening Diners,

Well winter has returned to Winterpeg. We now have more snow than most of the winter and it was colder today, but it is supposed to get up to 0C tomorrow so it will be a slushy, messy day. Oh, and we are will get more snow too. I'm not really sure what colour my car is but I have an idea it is silver.

Not much new here. I have spent a lot of time this week running all of my N scale locos looking for any problem spots on the trackage now that is all wired up. I did have to re-do a couple of curves and was able to increase them just a little which was enough to satisfy a couple of finicky locos. I found that the power pickups in a couple of tenders aren't working as the locos stall on frogs. One is a light mountain which will be an easy fix, just buy another tender but I will try to fix the one I have first. The other is a MP Pacific which I tried to fix but no success yet. They are notorious for tender pickup problems with the cure being to replace the trucks with those from a Bman tender.

Rob, hope you get that new 'toy' figured out. I bet it is just a question of practice. When we had our back yard landscaped in 1995, the guy who placed the boulders used a Bobcat and it was amazing to watch how he could set a large boulder on top of another in a very tight space.

Hope everyone has a good week,

CN Charlie

Evening all,

Temperature is dropping tonight in Lancaster PA, but according to the weather channel, the high will be in the mid-40s tomorrow. I can live with that.

I drove my family to Philly International so they can take their yearly sojourn to Florida. I'd been invited to go and had used the excuses of work, and not significant money on hand, to stay. Now, I rather wish I hadn't, but ah well I'll get out of the winter doldrums sometime soon. Driving back I stopped at a bar in Media for a late afternoon burger and fries and well I've had better fries but the burger hadn't been bad at all.

I bought a bicycle tube at the shop only to come home and realize I actually have a spare, but ah well, it is nice to have two as the other one will one day get to that point of where it cannot be patched.

On the model railroading front, I realized the brass airhose on my BLI Q2 had snapped off long ago so in creating a replacement I elected to go ahead and just use all the components of a Cal-Scale brass air, signal and steam hose set I had on hand. Soon, I'll figure out how to mount the hoses to the front, though prototype photos some had them and others didn't at different times. I like the detail so I'll add them. I'd like to do a drop-coupler, but other then using parts from a Cal-Scale or PSC Pennsy pilot I've yet to figure out how to do that. Ah well, figuring it out will be half the fun.

Evening folks, just a quick stop to say hello.

I haven't done any layout work in the last few days as I've got a recurring ankle injury that gives me trouble when the weather changes from VERY HOT to RAIN and COLD weather. We went from tops of around 88-90f on Sunday to tops of 70f today with lots of moisture and rain.

BRISBANE WEATHER : We currently have what we call an East Coast Low around 150km north east of Brisbane which is dumping large amounts of rain just to the north of Brisbane. More totals in excess of a foot of rain in 48 hours. It has a 30% chance of developing into a Tropical Cyclone. Fun times ahead!

As a young fella, it is quite annoying to have 'old man' injuries... Confused but I deal with it. Smile

I have popped some pills and have ice on it see how we go tomorrow.

Talk to you later
