I will just sit by the window and drink a cup of coffee for awhile.
Nothing major planned for today, just some MRR stuff, and oh yeah I have to go buy bird food for the flying rats that MOH and son had to have (B & G Macaws). The noises in the the background of the videos I have posted are them.
I have been thinking (dangerous) that to start with I will do a coal car that is emptied (just dumped the mounds) and one with the hand made load and they will be dedicated to the coal yard.
Jeff- Hope you feel better today.
Ken- I watched a video last night where a guy put in a insert into the coal car, then poured in WS cinders and then used ballast cement and glued it all in place. Looks easy to do but I have a bag of WS Mine Run Coal (used it in the coal yard) which looks more realistic but the glue doesn't hold it very well so I have to decide which way I want to go. Any suggestions?

Good morning. It's 66° and cloudy. The high will be 68°. There's a 20% chance of showers.I didn't get much sleep last night, maybe an hour at best. This morning I'm very stiff and it hurts just to move. Had a sugar crash early this morning. It dove to 69 before I could do anything about it. Right now it's at 88. No plans for today. So far I haven't been able to pick up much without breaking it. No way am I even going to attempt working on a loco or piece of rolling stock. **aw who cares! Nobody wants to know anyway.

I have a bit of a problem myself.... No, no, blood sugar was fine. A bit higher than I like first thing in the morning, but 129 isn't too bad. I can easily trace it to the Sweet Potato Pie I bought at the grocery store yesterday. Should have walked by and not put it in the cart. I am waiting to hear from someone on the properties committee at church about finishing the sound system for the Social Hall. Supposedly it HAS to be up and running for the annual meeting on Sunday..... I have sent a couple emails to people, but haven't heard back. I also should be attending the installation service for the new Pastor at one of the Gospel Churches in town. He was our speaker for the MLK Day Service last Monday. Frankly I would rather just hang out here and play with trains, but I do wish I knew what to plan for. Can't be in two places at the same time.......
Got about an inch of light fluffy stuff overnight. Just enough to make everything look nice and clean outside. Currently 20°F outside here in the Finger Lakes with a high around 30 this afternoon. Guess I will go fire up the wood stove and get some heat in the house (67° where I am sitting right now).

Jeff- I agree with the others. If we didn't care about the other people here there would be no reason to be in the diner.
Jeffrey- aw, shuckaroonies, we care! But sometimes in our misery and lonliness of agonies and pain, we FEEL like no one cares or bothers to read our posts of problems{I am jsut as guilty of feeling that way}. BUT, here at the dinner, most everybody DOES care, even when we feel they don't. So Buck up kid, and rest yourself up and get to feeling better! If it makes you feel anybetter, I overdid it yesterday too...and I wasn't working on no heavy tractor!!!
We here in the diner seem to have an inescapable undescribable bond that ties us together, though many of us will never meet in person and have no hope of ever doing so.
As I was saying, shopping for 2.5 yesterday, doing 4 laods of laundry, dishes and cooking a late dinner and I over did it too. GOt one more load of laundry and some dishes to do then maybe i run vaccuum and dinner and that is ALL I will do today. Besides lay down and nap.
So On with the day and weekend.
We got about 3 inches last night,,,s'now {so now abbreviation} s'now it looks like winter out there. May all disappear tomorrow and monday when we get warmer temps and rain {ugh}.

Been window (puter screen) shopping today. Have not found (N) Microtrains cars appropriate for my layout. Plenty of Atlas out there. Might try a few of those and see if they will go around the rails without uncoupling and/or derailing.
UPDATE: OK, ordered 6 Micro-trains cars from one of the vendors here on this site. Decided to go with mostly Burlington Northern, in honor of my family and friends who still reside in WA., my old stomping grounds. Besides, the color is right for a Soylent Green Plant. Rob

I bet that would make us all feel better, Jeff, Galaxy, Rob, Ulrich and definatly me here at work for the week-end. Curt would probably want ice cream with his as it sounds pretty warm down there. CN Charlie, Seamonster and I will have it straight, just warmed up a little. STILL DURN COLD HERE, but starting to moderate some.
Did a couple of major servicing jobs on a couple of Athearn U-23Bs and was very successful in quieting the growl by better than half, so I am happy with that. I don't mind a little growl, it makes them sound like they are really working under a heavy load. Then I did an SD45 in FURX livery and it is running as smooth as silk. So I have to say I think my skills in this area are improving. I hope I have as much luck with a couple of F-7s out of my fleet of a dozen that really sound angry. One of them is from a R-T-R set where it's mate runs super quiet, while it is a real coffee grinder. All of these skills have come from you Guys on the Forum here and I am indeed grateful to you for sharing your knowledge.
ROB, I would like to know what your intentions are, ( sounds like a Father-in-law to be, doesn't it ?) are you planning on keeping both the "N" and "HO" pikes or are you going to concentrate on one or the other ? Very glad to hear that new Tractor is working out for you. That should be a big help.
Lee, I for one would sure like the measurements on that rolling stock cabinet that you built. It really looks great. One small hint there, if you don't already know it, and that is don't use any of that anti-slip shelf covering if you plan on laying the cars on their sides as the rubber pattern will transfer to the sides of the cars. I read that one several years ago. It would be better to just use cardboard or foamcore or maybe just some flannel.
I saw Paul B. sneaking in on one of the other threads a night or two ago. Was nice to hear from him.
I bet Lion, has got his long woolies on under those vestments as well, as it has been no warmer south on the 49th in this area. Maybe he doesn't have to go outside much any more now that they got rid of their cattle. What say Brother ?

Just received a call from my Son in Missouri. He is suffering. Seems he got some food poisoning, he thinks from some soup last evening and has been wrapped around the Porcelain Potty ever since. He is really sore muscle wise and his throat feels burnt. Sure hope that it wears off quickly for him. I had it once really bad while on the road with the Hound and 24 hours later I still had a headache and soreness and fever that could bloody well stop a bus. No fun, tha'ts for sure.
Well, I had better get back to work here even though it is real slow today.

***Johnboy, with the HO layout more done than not, it will remain and in time it will be finished. As for the N layout, most of the track is set but no scenery. IF there are train cars that can run well on it, then I will continue. The M-T cars will be an important experiment towards deciding. Already know the vintage cars are going to go, sooner or later.
Question: How does a SD-9 and SD-24 match up? In the real world, would they be used in much the same way and what would their typical use be?
Another question: Any of you have a set of (N) Kato BethGon Coalporter cars and if so, how do they perform on the rails?

Yep, a little under the weather today. We had a meeting today at work that started at 6:30 AM so I was up and a bout at 5:30 AM. Throat was just a little sore. Around 11:00 I was really starting to feel like Caboose. Took lunch and at 1:00 PM threw in the towel and told them I was out of there. Store was pretty dead anyway. I can go in Sunday to make up the missed time if I feel up to it.
Curt On the coal loads, the way I did mine was I used straight alcohol and then a 60% glue and 40% water and dash of dish soap. On the few spots where the glue did not want to sink in I hit it with some more alcohol and it sucked right in. Makes for a pretty tuff coal load, can flip the car up side down and coal stays intact.
When I started the coal cars I was using Woodlands coal and looks pretty good. Then K-10 Model Trains did not have any more so I used black ballast. Coal does look a little better, but I am have blind anyway so what the heck. Still looks way better than the plastic coal loads that came with the Like Like Silver Series Coal Cars.
Far as the Life Like Silver Series Coal Car's, I really do like them. Free wheeling and pretty fair prices. I think I was get 6 in a set for around $30.00 or so when I was coal car happy.

Rob: I have about 12 of the coalporter cars and they seem to be good at staying on the rails..now having said that I am wondering if the wheelsets on the ones you are having issues with are actually on the rails..ie..not out of kilter. I seem to remember someone on the forum having a diagram showing the wheelsets being off just enough to actually be having the flange sitting on the rail as opposed to being where it was supposed to be...

Haven't caught up on my sleep any for the fact that my nephew has been rattling the windows all around the loop all day. I do feel somewhat better though. I got some work done on the Athearn blue box F7 chassis. I was right about it having a cracked axle gear. Front axle, rear truck, the gear was cracked all the way through. I pulled the wheel set and replaced it with a wheel set from an old blue box Alco PA2. Only difference is the new wheel set has sintered iron wheels while the other three wheel sets have nickel silver wheels.

Nah... Not a chance. It only got down to -2F. Besides, we have heated buildings, and there is no need to go outside.Besides, I got the sniffos and have stayed in my cell (room) most of the day. I'm going to sniffle my way through vespers and then head back to bed.

Evening All,
Back from the club. I got the programing done and ran the BF-16's as a consist for about a hour without a glitch. There was a Email notification tonight that LRT has mailed me back the board so hopefully that will be complete this week (fingers crossed).
I did the 2 coal cars, one full and 1 empty. Whoever said that it looks better was right on the mark.
I w**k tomorrow and it's my short day so I should be off at 4 PM.

Hello all... Nothing much going on here. We are expecting 200-300mm (about 7-12 inches) of rain in the next few days.
Rob - I don't own any coalporters myself but I do own 4 3 car sets of Maxi double stacks by Kato and they run superb, they use the similiar wheelsets to the bethgons. I do know a chap that owns around 200 of the bethgons here in Brisbane and has never had an issue.
Thats about it for me. Going to do an order in a fortnight from MB Klein for some trees and some more buildings. Will then get the scenery completed on the layout.

Waited most of the day for a phone call that didn't happen. I was supposed to get the new sound system in the social hall of the church (that has been setting on a shelf in a closet at church for the last 5 or 6 years) up and running for use tomorrow at the Brunch following the Annual meeting of the congregation. Some members of the property committee were supposed to run and hook up the wiring to the speakers. They ran the wiring but didn't hook up the wires because last Monday the social hall got painted on Tuesday. They haven't done a thing since. This was thee priority project THAT had to be done this week.... Figure I will somehow be to blame... Ended up not going to the Installation ceremony for a local Pastor as I was waiting for the phone call that never happened. So I did some odds and ends, laundry, collated the Division Newsletters THAT have to be snail mailed, and w*rked on the railroad for a while. Got another 10' of ties laid, and about 4' of rail glued down, soldered in places, and properly gauged. So as of an hour ago the little yard (about 9' long) looked like this:

A chance of drizzle or freezing drizzle before noon, then a chance of rain showers. ( I hope not 7 to 12 inches! That‘d be whatcha’d call a gulley warsher and we don‘t have a gulley to wash) Areas of fog before noon. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 45. Well, they’ve lowered the high temps for Monday and Tuesday, but for the 3rd week in January, I ain’t complaining about a 39° day nosirree.Uh uh.
Can’t sleep again. Well, I did sleep, but now I’m awake. Hope this don’t go on for two or three weeks like last time. Woke up at 0330 and now it’s like 0430ish. Been on the bay and redeemably (left out an “m” in the word immediately (I think)and the spell corrector came up with redeemably. I was amazed (amused) and decided to just leave it in there. Sorry for the confusion) got this strong urge to do some modeling. Anybody else see structures or kits they like and just want to build it even if it doesn’t fit the layout or your plans. Maybe then figure out how you can alter time or plans to accommodate said model?... ... I think so even if you say no.

Floor Wars Williamsville: Phase….I lost track - Got the Kitchen tile yesterday. Yup. Guess they ain’t no reason to put er off any longer. Once again I’m gonna have to do this in stages. Not because the room is big, in fact we have a very small kitchen probably rivaling Jeff’s. A bit of an exaggeration, but probably not as much as you’d think. The new Refrigerator will be delivered Monday afternoon sometime, AND good news, instead of $50 from the power company, the elevator juuuust happens to have a fridge-a-deezer going kaput. So, to them $150 is better than a new one. We’ll see. That of course means I’ll get involved in moving the thing, something I was trying to avoid, but the guys from the elevator will probably be glad to do it as that keeps them from doing what they should be doing in the first place.
Welp, chatted enough, but nothing else going on at 0330 ’cept e-bay. Oh look at the time. w**ked out just right, the buffets now open. Also looks like I got TOP so belly up and dig in while the sticky buns are still hot. Man I love them things.

A drab day. It´s been raining endlessly the past days. On Friday we had slurry with it, making the roads slippery. Winter shows its bad face this year, making me feel "lonely and blue".
With that new loco hopefully showing up soon, I thought I need to give it a place to run. My shelf layout is good for those EMUs, but not for a hard working Hudson pulling a 6-car excursion train. I still have that old hollow core door up in the attic, so I toyed with some ideas on how to make good use of that for a layout base. I still don´t know where to store a "real" layout without getting more than just a frown from Petra. If I put it on casters and move it out of the way whenever the room needs to be free of it - maybe that could be a way.
Here is my first rough idea:
It is a "double-face" layout with two different scenes. One is a suburb station, and the other one a mountain scene. Both scenes are clearly separated by backdrops employed a scenic dividers. I am not fully happy with it, but it is a starting point for more thoughts.

Good morning. It's 63 with dense fog. The high will be 76 and there's a 20% chance of thunderstorms throughout the day. Rain chance will increase to 30% after dark.No particular plans for today as I'm still sore. I got the cracked gear issue with the Athearn blue box F7 resolved yesterday. I still need to resolve the poor pickup issue. It improved somewhat yesterday after I changed the one wheel set so I'm reasonably confident my original evaluation of the problem is correct. Cleaning the bottom of the trucks and outer contact surfaces of the bearings with a pipe cleaner and some Krud Kutter should do the job nicely.

Was a sleep last night by 6:00 PM and did not get up till 7:30 Am. My head is all clogged up, and lets say I don't feel good. I was not on he schedule today so I may not go in. Just took pill to clear up my head so we will see what I feel like latter today.
Curt Much better! Nice thing is if you get coal car happy like I did, you can make the loads look a little different from each other.

Became very dizzy last night and had to crawl into bed and not move. Still not entirely right today, so will continue resting in bed. Suspect it's ear related and something that crops up every once in a great while.
