I say the late Rock Island baby blue/white "the Rock" scheme is awful
#2 would be the WP green and orange "peas and carrots" scheme
#3 the failed SPSF merger scheme
followed by the early plain-jane PC,Conrail,CSX and NS efforts
a lot of the semi-streamlined steam efforts were pretty crazy looking too!

BNSF generally and the Barf Bonnett in particular. UGH! Coming up close behind is the UP.

Here's my list of Worst/Best schemes,

Worst-Ugliest
1) Missouri Pacific- In UP colors!
2) C&O Chessie- Cat Scheme- good colors for a drag car
3) Penn Central- They could have came up with something better
4) BNSF- Out of all those great railroads combined, they still can't make up their mind on a paint scheme. Just leave them with their orginal paint schemes! NP,GN, CB&Q etc.
5) ACL- their purple days!
6) N de M- Yuck

Best/Good Paint Scheme
1) MissourI Pacific- Dark Blue 'Screaming Eagles' Scheme
2) Western Pacific- Silver/Orange
3) Rio Grande- Two colors, It works!
4) SP/SSW- I'm a SP fan, I grew up on Grey/Red. Simple and Basic
5) Santa Fe- Warbonnet Silver/Red
6) Montana Rail Link- Reminds me a little of MOPAC
7) Burlington- Red and Grey, also the Zephyrs silver scheme

I'm going to walk on the line of getting hung but I'm going to say the GN "Sky Blue" paint sceme. It wasn't really bad in it's own right, but after the nice colors GN wore for years, it was a let down.

Hope you're not talking about the Go-Mo's two-tone red-that was a good-looking scheme!

GTW is the ugliest out there. it just looks like a cheap tyco locomotive paint job.

a very close second is the BNSF heritage 1 and 2 paint schemes. the more i see them, the worse they get.

I think the worst ever was the scheme the Rock put on E-8A #652 for the Bi-centinial celebration. It's extreamlty ugly.

Penn Central is pretty sick. Another sick one is the SP/SF Kodachrome! UGH!!!!!! And, I personally like the Vomit Comet, and the BNSF Pumpkin scheme. Although, the one with more black on it (Heritage1?) looks better.

There's a reason this locomotive was called the "Vomit Comet". Nobody liked it. It looked awful. It scared Santa Fe fans, and even us BN people went "Ah.............No."

Personally, I never liked the "Executive" scheme. Cascade Green was beautiful.

This one will really get people, but I never liked the Northern Pacific's 1953 two-tone green and white Passenger Scheme. The two greens really clash with each other. The 1946 scheme with yellow trim was so much better.

I DID like the regular Exec. scheme, like what was put on the Executive F's, but NOT this variant of it. Actually I like all of the "Hill Lines" (including BN and BNSF!) schemes except for this one and a few examples of BN's Cascade Green.

In fact, I think Heritage II on a modern GE switcher looks great![:p]

I don't know about ugliest, but even though UP's Grey and Yellow looked great on the streamliners (and their earlier yellow and brown looked even better), I never could take that color on their freight units seriously. And I lost a lot of interest in SP when they changed their Black Widow freight units to gray and scarlet, though I have to admit it looked pretty good on their Tunnel motors. Same with Rio Grande, I thought the Grande Gold and silver was spectacular on their passenger trains, but I liked it better when their freight units reverted to black and orange. As to the SP Kodachrome, it always somehow looked like a traveling forest fire when they'd use those units in the Sierras. Made me nervous.

BNSF's Ugly Pumpkin is pretty bad.
ATSF's Warbonnet is too. Never saw the attraction. Although the Silver & Blue D&H version works for me.
UP's Diesel scheme is downright nasty as well.

The SP color scheme, say what you will, was designed mostly for safety. They roam an area that has too many level crossings, and they wanted the color to stand out against the background.

I wonder if it has worked.

I suppose that everybody doesn't like something, but NP's two tone green was designed by Raymond Lowey, and is considered a classic. He is the man that gave us the T-1, the S-1, the GG-1, Air Force 1, and the Coke Bottle, among other things. When it comes to industrial design, I don't think there has ever been anyone better. Note the line of people waiting for his autograph.[swg]
