Good Morning All,

39F and drizzly this morning - typical for this time of year. Next week off to Sebring via Orlando and the PRI (Performance Racing Industry) show - hope the weather is nice.

Did some more with the raised roadbed around the back of the layout - the extra plate girder bridge does a lot to open things up and looks good. Now I can start the approach to the river that slices through one side - also elevated so far. Not tonight though as it's Tuesday and museum night.

Ken - If you have to commute can you get a cheap rental to do it with? Should be deductable if nothing else. Otherwise you need to 'splain the situation to your supervisor so you can have the time to register/insure the car so your wife isn't stranded the whole time. Sounds like it's all a trial right now but it also sounds like it's worth it in the long run.

Ray - sounds like the basement sump has saved the old bacon a few times (wonder where that phrase comes from?). We have two drains in the floor of ours that lead out below grade to the back yard (we're on a slope so the rear is below the level of the floor).

Todd - I opted to let a professional do the floors at the house but even then.... Biggest thing was determining a gap to put between the T&G to allow for summer expansion. We also left the flooring packages opened up in the house for a week or so to allow the wood to normalize. It was almost enough harrassment to opt for an engineered floor (laminate with plastic pictures of wood sort of stuff) but we perservered and we're better off with the real wood. The stuff we did ourselves on the second floor the first go round ended up looking more like the rolling seas so money well spent in my book.

Gotta go - lots to do again today as we get a car ready to debut at Sebring. We don't have a lot of cars going but two are LMP1 cars and they have tons of complications.      CUL, J.R.

Good Morning!! Coffee please and two eggs scrambled on top of biscuits and gravy thank you.

Occasional rain and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 47.

Well, I got the wood flooring for the Entranceway and the hallway. Laid it out some to see what kind of headaches I have to look forward to. Looks like it should be not too awful bad. We’ll see when the time comes to actually do it.

Not much special going on today. I do need to do the restaurant grocery thing and straighten up around here a bit what with Thanksgiving DAY AFTER TOMORROW and all. Where has the time gone. Yeesh.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

GOOD MORNING!!!

Today is Tuesday, November 22, 2011!!!

The history of today's name is:

- Skandinavian = the skandinavian name got its name from the war-god Tyr.
- Swedish = Tisdag ("
Tyr' Day", skandinavian origin)
- Danish = Tirsdag ("
Tyr's Day, skandinavian origin)
- Norwegian = Tirsdag
- Icelandic = Thridjudagur ("Third Day", in Skandinavia Tuesday is the third day of the week)
- Dutch = Dinsdag ("Assembly Day")
- German = Dienstag ("Assembly Day", the original name wasn't 'Dienstag' but Ziostag, Zio =
Tyr)
- English = Tuesday comes from "Tiwazdaeg" (
Tiwaz was the rune dedicated to Tyr, the skandinavian god of war)

Enjoy your day and special thoughts and prayers for those in need!!!

Evening all.  Just stopping in for a glass of sweet tea before heading off to bed.  I was off from w**k today, so I did a whole lot of nothing, save for hitting the woods on a hunting trip.  I did not see any deer out and about, but the squirrels and turkeys were quite active.  Oh well, saw lots of signs that the deer are out there and moving, just they weren't when I was out.  And that is perfectly fine, as deer season lasts until the end of January.

Rob: sorry that the coyotes are giving you trouble...you know you could always sit out one night with a spotlight and a 22 and convince them to go elsewhere.

Ken: glad to hear that you are going to be getting at least some training, too bad it means a commute and no easy way to get your tags between now and then.

Well, that's about it, for me, have to be at w**k tomorrow at 0600 to get our weekly truck (comes early due to Thanksgiving).  It'll be an 11 hour day, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Later taters!

Evenin' folks!

Janie just a decaf for me right now.

Been a busy day here.  I got another face cord of wood stacked and finished scanning in the 192 photos of my Senior Classmates from way back......  I think there were 185 that actually graduated, but we are trying to find the others as well to invite to the 50th. reunion coming up (49th. actually, as we are doing it in 1013).  I will be also scanning in many of the other photos found in the yearbook.  The new scanner is great!  The Descreen function completely eliminates the funny patterns you get when you scan in newsprint or old books (like the yearbook).  At times there were a few artifacts on the image that was able to remove using the clone tool in Photoshop.  Tomorrow I will make a couple of CDs to take to the reunion committee meeting tomorrow night.  May print out a few of the photos as well to show how they will look for one of the displays they want.

Wow... I see I started something with the mention of a water heater...  Thanks for the input.  I will look at all possibilities before I make any decision when the time comes.  CN Charlie,  I have had several water heaters rupture over the years.  Two in my current house.  We had to replace the water heater right after we moved into the house.  That one lasted almost to the end of the guarantee...  So I got a new one free (so too speak),  That is the one still at work downstairs.  One good thing is the heater is placed on a bed of stones.... Which lead to a drain that drains into the sump.....  I watch it closely for any sign of problems.

I have the wood stove cranked up tonight as it is 28°F outside at the moment.  One of these days, I probably should clean and fire up the main furnace....  By the first of December maybe.  Besides the wood stove I have a through the wall gas heater in the living room.  It does very well until the temp gets below 20...  Then the main furnace takes over.  It is set a couple degrees lower than the through the wall.

Nite Galaxy!

See you all tomorrow.

Boy My World Just Got Turned Upside Down!

Just got a phone call from my buddy that works for NTB like I do. Seem Steve has told Neil I was not getting trained right, or should I say trained period. Well Steve just called, seems I am heading to Kansas City this coming Saturday! Yes

 But there are problems.

1 Newer car has no plates and no way in heck I trust it for a 275 mile road trip.

2 I trust the plated car to make the trip, but leaves the wife with out a car.

3 Next day off is Thanks Giving, DMV will be closed.

4 I get paid Friday, I am working 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and I am working in MO, not IL so no running to get plates in my half hour break!

The LION has been working on the railroad, and is putting the new tower together. Once this is wired, I can rewire the rest of the layout.

Good Evening,

Thanks Johnboy for stopping that cold air so we can get some warm stuff from the south this week. I guess warm is a relative term as I'm talking about 40F but still a lot better than the 5F we had yesterday.

Ray, I'm not going to even mention the type of water heater but if yours is 18 years old, yours is living on borrowed time. We had one go and 32 gallons of water all over the place isn't fun as it turns out to be a lot more than that if you aren't there to turn off the water. I know this from experience which I didn't want to repeat so I replaced our heater when it hit 10 years.

Curt,  my doc is a fitness fanatic and gave me my annual scolding about exercise when I saw him a couple of weeks ago for my yearly physical. I'm not overweight and luckily don't need any meds except lipitor 2 or 3 times a week but he's right, I would feel better. I found out that I do have a little arthritis in my thumb. This aging thing isn't great. Golden years, hogwash.

Got the tender pickups installed for my PK2 0-8-0 and it does stop the stalling on turnouts. When I first tried it out there was a short, the trucks were reversed, I was looking upside down. Fixed I thought but no still a short. Then I found that I had one pick up on the wrong pin location which was an easy fix. Success at last.

Todd, sounds like you have very nice truck. I think trucks now are nicer than cars were in the past but with gas here at nearly $5 a gallon, they are rather expensive to run.

Rob, I hope you are doing a little better. I looked at your website and you sure did some great wildlife paintings. From the comments there I assume you were in Africa?

Well getting late and Robbie is throwing his ball under the sofa so he wants someone to get it and play.

 Flo, beer please.

Sigh Been one of them days. Just plain tired and sleepy all day long. But yet, never able to fall asleep all the way.

This is all so a great site.

Lot of help from the folks there when I was on my quest for better sound. Lot of Tube and Horn fans on the site. They tried to get me to go tube and horn speakers, but I love my Dahlquist DQ 10's speakers and 3 amp was not going to cut it.

Sure wish I felt more alive today, but I am just beat.

Good Evening..

After we converted to all electric we found that our new water heater was  a lot faster in the heating of water here..mind, we also bathe here...no shower.  So we also have plenty of hot water here.

Evening All,

Well I got my results today. The only issue is I have some fatty infiltrates in my Liver. Doc says it's because I'm overweight. He says the way to fix it is through exerciseSigh. My Gallbladder, Bile Duct and spleen are all clean. I told the Doc I guess this means I have to get off my butt and he said yup.

I got quite a bit done on the layout. I painted it a base Grey last night. I used the Leopard method for highlights today, Put some ground cover down where it was needed, planted trees, put down the dyed rocks, ballasted and put up the sign. I still need to "oil" in between the rails when the ballast is dry.

Jeff- Very nice looking boxcar.

Ulrich- I downloaded GIMP and tried playing with it a little. Right now it looks pretty complicated to me, but I will work with it to see if I can use it.

Lion- Did you say using coal saves you $200/day in heating bills? Holy cow (no pun intended) That must be a heck of a heating bill.

Everyone take care.

Not much to report on. Mighty quiet around here at night, except for the packs of coyotes.

OK, who are the biggest audiophiles here? I have a few novice questions to pm you guys, if you don't mind?

Just to pile on, we looked at the instant hot water (98% efficient) and rejected it as well. The placement needs to be nearest the place where you want "instant" hot water and that ends up being the bathroom. They do time out to prevent overheating the heat exchanger though in hindsight that might have been a good thing if it got beloved daughter out of shower before the fishes were all in dry land at the reservoir. After one fire, just didn't want a gas heater anywhere other than the basement where we have a better chance of not catching stuff on fire. After costing it all out though the real bottom line was it won't ever pay for itself. I'm just happy with my floor radiant system and the built in water heater (with external tank super insulated) and the 33% savings in heating bills thanks. The hot water is like for free. Big Smile J.R.

Ooooh T.O.P. just in time for dinner. Limber up the credit card ladies and I'll start with a filet mignon, baked potato, and corn on the cob. A nice Cabernet with that as well please. We'll decide dessert afterwards, thanks.

We looked into this too, and discarded it for the same reason. And we were only going to use it to heat water for our tea.

You want a long wait for hot water? Our hot water heater is TWO BUILDINGS AWAY! Well, it does recirculate, but those at the end of the line wonder if the hot water is even turned on. Actually the hot water is on all of the time, but the circulator is off at night, which amounts to the same thing if you want a bath.

If someone wants to leave before 5AM, and wants a hot shower, they will have to arrange it with the building manager to leave the circulator on all night. But at least we save $200/day by burning coal! ☺

I have been knocking on wood a lot with some of the old appliances I have around the house...  The one I worry about most is the hot water heater which was installed in 1993.  They usually last about 10 years in this area.  Hope I can get a couple more years out of it.  I would like to put in an "on demand" system when it goes.  They are much more efficient and will pay for themselves over time, but are a larger original cost.

Not so fast Ray... My father had a natural gas one installed and is not really happy with it.

First, he had it installed where the old one was...half way between the kitchen and the bathroom. It still takes just as long running the water to get to teh hot water as with teh tanked electric heater. He actaully was gonna have it installed further away from the bathroon and under the stairs close to the furnace so the "utilities" would be closer together. He's glad he left it where the old one is or he'd have to turn on the hot water, read War and Peace, Watch Star Wars, and go to the mail box before he'd have hot water at teh bath tap!!!

Second, It shuts off periodically during use and so he gets spurts of cold water when it does. shocks him when it does that. They say its normal for it to do that so as to not over heat.

third, he has had it for 2 years now, and not including installation and cost of the unit itself, has seen no significant savings in his utility bill...nat gas and electric on same bill so it doesn;t matter what source is used.

FOurth, he has a water softening system for the whole house. THey told him that was good as he would have less trouble with the narrow tubing in it clogging with sediment from the water, needing replacement.

Fifth, he said it really ISN'T exactly "endless" hot water all the time. He said he felt a gas tanked heater could have done him just as well over his electric tanked heater.

Sixthed...he siad for the cost of the unit itself {about $3k} and the installation to run nat gas, run the exhaust, etc was really not worth it and would take way too many years to pay back.

He said it was a nice idea. but if it ever failed him, he'd get a 30 gal tanked nat gas heater for the $600 instead.

Just one man's experience. For what it's worth

Sir Madog

Curt - GIMP is a picture editing software which you can download from the internet for free. It is much like Photoshop and allows to really work with the pictures, not just adding a little smoke.

GEE...when I was a young'un, a GIMP was an old man who didn't get around very well, usually on a bum leg and with a cane.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of buttermilk pancakes and a side order of sausage.  Don't forget to bring the NYS Maple Syrup along with a cup of dark roast coffee....  Need to wake up........

I have been knocking on wood a lot with some of the old appliances I have around the house...  The washer is about 15/16 years old.  The dryer is even older, I put a new belt on it a couple years ago.

Barry, thanks for the search terms!

I keep remembering more things THAT I have to get done yesterday, so I best get moving!

Morning All,

Sitting here killing time before my  MD appointment. Only plans today are to go to the store and get a jug of  Elmer's Glue and to do the painting on the tunnel.

I have read the term GIMP twice this weekend. What does it mean?

Ulrich- Great looking scene.

Lee- Sorry you had such a lousy and expensive weekend.

Talk to you later.

Good morning. It's 70° and cloudy. The high will be 79° with variable clouds. There's a chance of rain ranging from 10% to negligible.

I'm not feeling much better this morning than I did last night so I will attempt again to get some rest. If someone calls with some asinine request I might just tell them to go fly a milk bottle. I still have some cleaning up to do on the layout so I'll try to get that done today. While I was at Wagon Master yesterday I saw most of the last quarter of the Redskins/Packers game. Final score 35/26 Packers. Don't take that to mean I'm a Packers fan because I'm not.  I'm simply saying what the score was.

Good morning All,

47F and partly cloudy this morning. No wind though so it's actually nice out. Crews are still going through picking up fallen limbs and trees and the general debris that's been hauled curbside. Many areas look like they have battle damage with all the stuff on the ground.

Ken - hope you're feeling better.

Galaxy - unless you really like the occasional water on the floor, stick with the top loader. I love the front load stuff we have now because it is stackable but every once in a while we do get some leakage at the front gasket. You can get basic models in both configurations for not a lot and the best bet is big box closeouts. You have a particular issue where you're at now because of the massive amount of replacement stuff needed after the floods. On the other hand, all the volume should mean more "scratch and dent" stuff. After all, it doesn't need to be a perfect showpiece to clean clothes. Steam freshen indeed - Haarrumph.  J.R.
