Ray - I don't see any problems converting you backyard shed to a G scale "Engine House." After all, you are now experienced in the design, construction and equipping of them. And it will surely be easier on the eyes and nerves working in G scale.

Whew, that was close. Fortunately, Lee snuck in there and is stuck with the tab. As the wife and I are going to the Civic Light Opera this afternoon, and then to dinner, it would have been an expensive day what with all you chow hounds.
Sorry 'bout the double post. Maybe it happened when I edited it. Who knows with computers? Double tip for the girls, you say? Let's see if I remember my grade 4 math. 2 X zero is . . . . um . . . . Sorry, I have not been around much, just moved into the new home. I finally have a basement workshop/train area. All the workshop stuff is still in boxes, has I (we) have been working on the rest of the house.

ULRICH: Again, your little modules are making the sparks fly inside my brain... Funny how the mind can "see" what it "wants to see." What I mean is, I'm looking at your grade crossing ("level crossing?"). I see the Wabash crossing just north of Shenandoah, Iowa on Highway 59. I don't "see" those funky yellow and black crossing signals...I see a pair of rusty flashers (no gate)...and yet, I'm looking at YOUR module...
Too much time in the sun lately for me???
TOM WRIGHT: I'm glad you found a scanner THAT w**ks! Those trucks are just...beautiful! I hope somebody has preserved them... the styling of rigs like those...just non-existent today. After the few times I've driven my '53 Dodge/Towers, I can appreciate the "fun" you had driving those trucks. The Dodge ("Dragonslayer One") does not have power steering. Heck, she lost her brakes the evening I brought her home (to Central City) from Anamosa...man, what a ride! Also, if I haven't said it before (even if I have...it bears repeating): thank you for your service, and Welcome Home!
Did I just see a copperhead go slithering by???
Well (toad still floating happily, neighbor's cat mysteriously missing...) today is the last day of "no deeds to do, no promises to keep" for probably the rest of the month. Tomorrow night, Regional Softball Tournament action kicks-off for my high schools. Winners go to State Tournament in Ft. Dodge. At the end of the week, Sub-State baseball kicks-off, winners to to Des Moines for their State Tournament. Beef Days (Solon's annual town festival) is next weekend. The Wife has family coming up from Lou-eeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-anna next weekend. I am obligated to go shake hands, smile and be pleasant with them. The Johnson County Fair is coming up, the same week as State Baseball. Life is going to get very hectic, very soon...
Maybe I'll tack up some pics later of recent projects...consider yourself warned!

Good morning all. Just coffee right now, Flo--my Major Dickenson's if you please.
Well, went to the National Train show yesterday in downtown Sacramento. Place was PACKED--some great displays and vendors, though I didn't see either Precision Scale or Division Point there. I was hoping to get some information on Division Point's new projected passenger train set--a 5-car 1948 "Prospector" in the original Rio Grande black and yellow.
I did, however, see Bachmann's new Yellowstone, and it's a super-detailed, long, lean, powerful looking HONEY of a locomotive. It'll be out in October, and the price is right--hmm, I just might get myself a B&O "Loaner" after seeing that one. Yah, like with 3 M-4's and 2 AC-9's I need ANOTHER 2-8-8-4, LOL! But as I said in another post: "Step aside, Big Boy, the REAL articulateds are a' comin."
I would have taken photographs, but I was heading to Vespers right after the show, and since I wasn't driving, I'd probably get strange looks at St. Francis walking in with a Nikon.
Actually, I walked in to St. Francis with two gondolas I picked up at the show--a couple of beautiful SP ACF welded 70T's from a company I've never heard of--Tangent. Anyone familiar with them? They're out of Asheville, North Carolina, and the models are absolutely exquisite! A little pricey ($30 a shot). The guy at the booth was really nice to talk to--they also had a lot of covered hoppers. As I said, I've been out of the 'game' for about 6 months, so I don't know how new this company is, but the product is really eye-popping.
Other than that, nothing much new on the MR front--the weather's been beautiful the past couple of days, supposed to get into the mid to low 80's this coming week (out here this time of year, that's the equivalent of a Winter Freeze), so I forsee a lot of tinkering in the garage. And probably some unprintable language at the top of my voice. Cover the kiddie's little innocent ears, neighborhood mommies, "Doc" White is going to be building more mountains.
Stan: My condolences on the loss of your friend--I'll put him on our prayer list.
Ray: Yes, I think that Vivaldi quote was from Aaron Copland. Sounds like something Copland would say, LOL! I remember him coming out to our New Music Festival the first year the college started it--absolutely TERRIFIC guy. A buddy of mine and I were doing the "Old American Songs" and my buddy said, "Mr. Copland, I hope you don't mind, but I've got a little different idea on one of these songs." Copland smiled and said, "As long as you HAVE ideas, I don't mind at all." He became one of my Instant Heroes after that. Great composer, IMO. As to my avoiding most of the Baroque Era, I think it's because my instrument is so much a 19th-20th century instrument that I don't really care for the sound of Baroque composers on it--too 'heavy' for my ears. Now the guitar is an entirely different matter--it sounds just delicious. Bach on guitar--pass the smelling salts, fella's, Tom's going to pass out from sheer pleasure, LOL! Oh, and PS: That engine house of yours just blows my socks off--BEAUTIFUL!
Jeff: I've found out if you use a little battery operated hand-vac, you HAVE to clean the layout in stages instead of all at once. Five miniutes of vacuuming, an hour of re-charging--probably a LOT easier on that ankle. I'm still hoping that Medicaid will come through with that brace for you. Can't think of a reason why they shouldn't (except that it's Medicaid and they're just plain damned WEIRD, sometimes).
Have to take Uff-Dah to the vet tomorrow for his tri-monthly ashma shot--I'm polishing my armor and warning the vet. Can't believe that my sweet little Viking turns into Godzilla the moment he gets on the examination table. Spooky (who looks FAR more 'ferocious') is just a big, furry 18-pound charmer at the doctor's, but not my sweet Skogkatt. I keep telling Uff-Dah that it's absolutely EMBARRASSING to have a Norwegian Forest Cat that's allergic to TREES! Oh well--
That's about it from SunnyCal--heading out to the garage to either slap Sculptamold around or run my Daylight. Haven't decided yet.
Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Hi guys
Tooth front: bothersome, but "good drugs" helping. 2/3rds of the root canal is over. I will be very thankfull when the last of it is done finally.
House front: they had open house today for an hour. I went to snoop. Only one other guy showed up to look at it,a nd the guy "showing the house" wasn't "showing" it at all, he was too busy to even say hi to me as he was either on his cell phone as a phone, or texting his Plings on it. The listing agent believes the owners are waiting till after teh open house to give an answer on our offer-at least taht is what he emailed our buyers agent, Judging by the no-shows at teh open house, they shouldn't be getting any hot offers on it soon. If we don't hear by Monday 6pm. we will tell our agent to issue a 24 hour offer expiry date/time. If they accept the verbal offer by then {tuesday 6pm} then we will have it in writing to them within 24 hours {Wednesday 6pm} for signing. I don't expect they will even respond. Our offer is a very strong offer, but below their asking price and people around here seem to be stupid about getting their asking price, then three months later when they don't get it, they drop the house by $10K- $15k, which is about where our offer is now. And it is a very strong guaranteed offer. the only contingency is house inspection of course.
Stan I must have missed somehting but as others are offering condolences, so shall I, wiht prayers .
I will stil be floating over teh corner booth in a most peculiar way...GOOD drugs....

Evening All,
Sitting here watching Criminal Minds. I was happy to see that The Closer and Eureka start again on Monday. Finally got the Tortoise working after about a hour of frustration. I think I will test them all on two more days (Tuesday and Thursday) and if they work then I will cut the wire that sticks up through the turnout.
After that I cleaned up the area and put things away. I also finalized the Tunnel Portals under supports (wood blocks) by running my M1B and a passenger car back and forth several times to make sure it worked OK and there was enough clearance with the inner track. Really couldn't run very far since I have a turnout on each end. I was sorely tempted to do some cutting.
Next Thursday I am taking Mom and Dad out to lunch for their anniversary (56 years).
Chris- Nice rolling stock. How did you weather them?
Ulrich- Another nice looking module.
Galaxy- Fingers crossed with the house.
Everyone have a good night.

(Walks through singing... ".........Brothers gather 'round, listen to my story, 'bout the Promised Land, and the Promised Glory......") Grins at Tom W..... Gotta love Copland, don't you!
Tom, I learned about half of the songs in the "Old American Songs" cycle (1 & 2). Fun! Pure fun! Really cool for you to actually have the chance to perform for Aaron Copland. Yes one of America's greats! I have to agree with you about the piano and Baroque music. Harpsichord is sooooo much more in the style. On the other hand I do love the piano works of the classical and Romantic eras very much. I often wish I had w*rked a little harder all those years I took keyboard lessons I studied piano for 10 years (well study isn't the best description) and later Pipe Organ for 4 years. I used to have my 8th. grade students identify Baroque style on the final exam by have them listen to J. S. Bach's, Concerto in C major for Harpsichord, Recorder, and String Orchestra. Wasn't much Doubt about what period THAT was from! BTW, I was wondering how the Viking Cats were doing... Hope Uff-Dah makes it to and home from the vets without a problem! And, thanks for your comments on the Engine House.
Galaxy? Why is Galaxy still tied down from the ceiling with a rope? Oh, still waiting for the rest of the root canal. Good luck with the house!
Managed to get another side of the shed painted today (South Wall), along with a few boards put back in place THAT will hold a trellis in place on the back side. Tomorrow before he heads out w*rk, my son will stop over and help me take out on of the two doors on the front so I can remove the rotted trim, paint, then replace the trim.
Gotta go water the garden before dark. Yep, finally too dry here in the Finger Lakes.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening,
BARRY: Thanks!
CURT: Thanks to you too! Nothing too fancy with the weathering. The PC boxcar and Far-Mar-Co hopper were "pre-weathered" by painting them with faded colors at the start. All get various washes from Mountain Modelcraft: grimy black, faded paint and rusty steel. The black and faded paint are applied full strength, sometimes heavier than others. The rusty steel is slathered on and dabbed back off with a wad of paper towel. I also use Floquil Rail Brown for rust/grime along the trucks, underbody and steps. I'm no ROBBY P, but I'm happy with what I've got (usually). Oh, I also have some homebrew "munge" mixtures THAT get slathered on as a wash.
Well (toad is snoozing as he floats), today was a bust on a number of fronts. I thought this would be a good day to get a little farther on my GP-15 rebuild project. After breaking another #79 drill bit, and launching the last one out of it's packaging into parts unknown... I realized the grabs are going on crooked and NOT in a straight line. Here's why: I got this unit back in '03 or '04. At THAT time, I was having great misery with grab irons, so shaved off all of the molded-on grabs and glued-on some brass casting grab irons. Since then, I've gotten a lot better at putting them on straight, etc. But now, on this rebuild...I have nothing to go by. To make things worse, Walthers puts these big...posts, I guess you'd call them, inside the shell for screws to attach the shell to the frame. Athearn blue box locos don't have THAT. The problem lies in THAT the drill bit gets through the shell OK, then hits the post. Sometimes THAT is enough to break it off , other times it deals with it OK and drills into it as well. But, the grab iron doesn't quite make it into both holes (shell and post), necessitating clipping THAT side of the grab. I finally got disgusted enough to pull off the few I actually got installed, puttied the multitude of holes...and have a fresh supply of bits in the next order from the big W. I need to get a set of dividers, maybe then I can rig-up a way of holding the steel rule in-place and then mark-out the grab locations with the sharp points of the dividers. Hopefully, enough of an indent can be made to keep the bit from "walking" all over the place.
The joys of atoning for previous modeling "sins."
So (not a needle pulling thread), I decide to knock-together a recent theBay purchase: a Walthers waffle-side boxcar. Hmmmmm, needs extended draft gear. Look in the parts bins...DRAT! I'm all out. Go to the big W's website...and still listed as "unknown" when they'll have THAT part again. OK, I could add another Details West cushion underframe to the next order...but THAT means removing the cast-on coupler boxes. Maybe DW or Details Associates has a part THAT can be applied to extend them...like the plastic ones Walthers sell.
Put THAT project back on the shelf.
I look at the growing lines of freight cars (and one GP-40) waiting for Dullcote. Thought about spraying them today...decided I didn't want to fume-up my office. The AC is sitting in the window where the fan goes THAT does such a wonderful job of sucking/blowing the vapors out. Hmmmmmmm. Didn't feel like hauling them all to the basement to spray 'em there.
Will deal with THAT another day.
Thought about applying another coat of "CNW green" in my office where the staging yard will go. Decided I didn't really feel like moving all of the crap out of the way necessary for THAT task.
Stepped outside a few times, looked at various things needing doing out there...decided it was too expletive hot...went back to the AC...
Yup, will deal with those projects another day.
*sigh*
I'll have me a seat at the RC, maybe quaff a few RBF's...
Evening Folks
Flo, Beer Please.
Work if I can call it that Front. Had one customer all day, they where in by 12:00 AM, bought and where gone by 12:45. Then I played guitar till my fingers hurt, then read the rest of the day. OH, phone rung one time, they where looking for a baby crib mattress, we don't carry them.
Todd Thanks for the offer and I may still very well take you up on the phone call.
Ulrich That what I like pictures! When are you going to add the water to the river bed? All so hoping to see some trees some day as well. Have you been running the Z Scale layout?
Stan Sorry for your loss. While you are still new here at the dinner, you are very much part of the crowed and personal I am very happy you joined.
T White Hum Tom, the new Bachmann is a Yellowstone? While the picture that was posted of the new engine where not very big, it looked a lot like a Y6 b to my untrained eye. Would you mind post some detail pictures of your fine collection of Yellowstone's? I am pretty sure you have a Y6 b, could you take some pictures with the Y6 b and Yellowstone's next to each other?
Train Front Well so far today it has bite the big one. Things went south this morning before work. I had a half hour before I had to get ready for work. I broke out my BLI NYC Hudson and was going to make a few laps.
Started out fine and made one lap around the layout, then it started derailing at 3 different points. Hum, maybe I did not get it on the rails just right. Tried 3 times and one the spots it never had a problem at was the turn out for the reversing loop?
Then, the whole DCC system start acting nuts. It would only work for about 5 seconds, then shut down and sound 3 beeps, then start back up. Pulled the Hudson, kept doing the same thing. Pulled the M1a (had been running it) DCC system kept doing the 5 second on then the shut down and 3 beeps. Pulled the SW 9, I had been running it, still the same thing. Moved all the cars I had being dragging, still shutting down? Finally had to give up and go to work.
Tonight when I got home powered up the DCC system the way I left it, no problem? Then I started running train. Put the Hudson in the yard, placed the SW 9 on the A line with a track cleaning car and put the M1a back on to its train. No problem with the DCC system.
Trains ran fine for about 3 laps then the M1a derailed at the reversing loop turnout. Of course, the turnout is out of reach and will have to pull up the mountain to reach it.
See you all later.

Yep, it is!
Ken, the Y6b is a 2-8-8-2 articulated, the EM1 Yellowstone is a 2-8-8-4 articulated. It gots 2 more wheels there......
Decaf coffee, please.

Ray, I know the Y6b is a 2-8-8-2 and the engine Bachmann coming out with is a 2-8-8-4. But the only Yellowstone I have seen is Toms. They look a lot more like the link that Jeffery posted than the picture of what I saw on the site not counting wheels that is.
But, then again I have never study them, and did not know there was more than one kind.

Evenin' folks!
Janie just a decaf for me, thank you.
I am officially tired out. Have way too many things needing to get done round here and way too little time. About all I managed to do after I got home from my son's house was water the garden and then sit and stare at the computer screen for a while. Spent about a half hour trying to find the "new Bachmann 2-6-0 Mogul" everyone is talking about. There is no announcement about it on the nearly impossible to navigate Bachmann site. The only HO Moguls I could find are very, very toy like looking but have.... Are you ready for this, just what all of us who have spent hours creating scenery really want..... SMOKE! Ooooooo, Aaaaaaahhhhh. Precious! And it is not made in an undecorated model..... 10 times more w*rk to put it on my layout. Guess I don't need one.
Stan, I was going to mention about your friend for the last several posts and forgot each time. My sympathies to you and all his family and friends!
Have a great night! Prayers for all in need!
Ken:
The closest I have to a Y6 is a USRA copy of a 2-8-8-2 that was built for the Rio Grande in 1923 or so. I"ve got 5 Yellowstones--3 Missabe M-4's (Akane brass) and 2 SP AC-9's (Balboa brass). They're longer than a Y6, but not quite as long as a Big Boy. The Missabe's had a greater tractive effort than the Big Boy, though the UP loco was built to be faster. That's the reason that UP specified a 4-wheel lead truck, otherwise they'd have had a Yellowstone, LOL!
Here's a link to an article on Yellowstones that should help you. The reason that a lot of us are jumping up and down about the Bachmann is that it's the first time this wheel arrangement has ever been offered in affordable plastic. Other than that, if you wanted a Yellowstone, you had to go brass.

It lists all of the 72 built, who built them and who owned them. There's also a link to photos of each.
Good Morning Gang!
I can´t believe it - I beat Bill again!
Looks like it is going to be a sunny day - hopefully not as humid as in the past days. Petra and I will be looking at some senior citizen places today, to find a suitable one for my parents. It won´t be easy to find a home which will meet their expectations.
Zoe, a breakfast bagel and a mug of coffee, please.
Though the new Yellowstone Bachmann will be releasing in Fall is a nice looking and hefty beast, I find it more interesting that they cater for the "smaller loco aficionados" as well. There is plenty of big steam in the market, but a decent small loco is still missing.
Ken - talking about that Z scale layout - it still rests put aside, as I have actually now place to put it up, not even for a test run. Petra won´t let me put it on our living room table, knowing that it will stay there for a little while
Chris - your comments make me think about my layout concept. My initial intention was to put up a shelf above my desk to store the modules when not in use. Which in effect mean, that the layout will be "in storage" most of the time, as may desk is the only place I can use my computer, do some w*rk on a module etc. Triggered by your "vision", an idea came to my mind. What if I build a narrow shelf along the wall where the modules could stay, say semi-permanently and form a little point-to point layout. If I find a substitute for the bookcase which is obscuring the way, i´d have 16 ft. for the layout. As I have built the corner modules already, I could still built up the "roundy-rounder" on my desk, if I feel like doing so. I guess, I have to go back to the drawing board with this idea. I will not w*rk on the corner modules until this idea has matured.
Edit: Here is a first idea of what I mean:
Galaxy - I keep my fingers crossed on the house issue - I bet they will bite!
Well, that´ll be all for now - have a good one!
