Good Evening!

It´s been a slow day in my neck of the woods - lotsa wet stuff coming down. Spend the afternoon laying some track, but could not complete the job, as 1 (one!) piece of track is missing - stupid me! I put out the order and will have to wait a few days (hopefully not more) until I get.

The morning was kind of "interesting" Our welfare agent tried to "persuade" to do a security officer´s training and take up a job in security. Now you have to figure me, a guy of 6´5", "slightly" overweight, wearing glasses, with a heart condition and a sore back doing a security job! I don´t know whether to laugh or to cry. It is probably one of those "offers" I cannot turn down Embarrassed

Andy - sounds as if you have a nice neighbor.

Ray - your son´s niece is in our Angel

Ken - just a thought of mine - selling mattresses is a seasonal business, isn´t it? I can imagine that summer is the time when people have a lot of other things on their mind than to go out and by a mattress. Keeping my fingers crossed that the situation will improve soon!

Zoe, I´ll have a Beer and stay at the RC for a while, please & thanks.

Good Afternoon everyone!

Thanks to everyone for the comments on the paintings.

Ulrich, any picture I post is for everyone to share, so go right ahead!

Simon, I almost always stick to the same size, 16"x20". They're easy to frame , and easy to ship.

My next painting is probably something NYC, either a Hudson, Mohawk, or Niagara. I'm just looking for the right shot.

Anyway, I'll see ya all tomorrow!

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooood Afternoon, BARRY-sized double cheeseburger and a bucket of 7-Up. Need to mow the pasture/meadow/yard later today. Then again, maybe I can convince the city of Clarence THAT it isn't a "yard," but a "roadside vegatation preservation and management area." Yup, there's a committee in Iowa THAT seeks to ensure roadsides are covered in all sorts of pretty ditch weeds. Confused

ULRICH: Not to be insulting, or to annoy you, but THAT description fits most of the "security" guards I've met. There was an old guy at the Cargill Corn Wet Milling Plant in Cedar Rapids, had to be about 90 years old, deaf as a utility pole, blind as a bat. I come wheeling up to his little red stop sign to teach a CPR and first aid class to the in-plant responders. He comes up to the truck (took about five minutes for him to walk ten feet). He fixes an icy stare upon me. "What are YOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU doing here?" After several minutes of explaining what CPR and first aid is, what Kirkwood Community College is...and having to go through "my story" several times; he finally shuffled back to his little shack, ten feet away (took him another five minutes), then while still staring at me as if I was the Anti-Christ, Charlie Manson and his ex-Father-in-Law from 1938...he opens the gate.

My favorite Uncle had a security job for a number of years at a printing plant in Manhattan, KS. They made some popular brand of sewing patterns, Mc-something...McCall's maybe??? Anyhow. Most of his shift was spent glancing at monitors (security cameras), doing Word Search puzzles, and answering the phone. Once an hour, he was supposed to walk the plant. But, he didn't have to maintain any set pace, he just had to hit a number of "turn key" things THAT would prove he'd made his rounds. He was ultimately replaced by...a computer. His final act? He was told to turn on the system replacing him on his way out the door for the last time.

TODD: Rerun wants to know, what Missy's favorite TV shows are. He really likes "Sitting Ducks," or something like THAT... Mostly though, at bedtime, he prefers to look at picture books with the Wife.

Have a good day everybody....

A quick coffee TO GO, please.

Quick question: If anyone here knows, regarding gear oil for a 4WD J-Deere tractor, would it be OK to add 85W-140 to the exsisting 80W-90 in the front axle? Or, do I need to wait until I can find some 85W-90? Thanks!

Off to dig a few fence posts before the storms get here.

Afternoon All,

Hot and Dry again, although it did rain last night for about 15 minutes. My son and I cleaned out the storage locker earlier today. Took 3 truck and car loads to do it, but we are done with that. It will save us $150 per month. Afterwords I had planned on fixing the 2 spots under the layout but I was so stiff I decided against it. After the last load I had a Beer (Newcastle Brown Ale) and after taking some Ibuprofen I sat on my backside for the afternoon.

MOH took a picture of our skunk friends this morning at breakfast.

They are not steam locomotives but they are still pretty neat animals.

Everyone take care.

I wouldn't do it all year. Personally what I would do is just replace all the gear oil with 85w-140 for the summer and hard use. To just top off I would keep some 85w-90 on hand. The 85w-140 is thicker at operating temperature than the 85w-90 which stays at basically the same temperature

It's not good to mix oil weights or types. Wait until you can find the proper oil. Some dimwit mechanic almost burned up the 318 engine in my van by putting 10W40 in it. It didn't like it at all and quieted down only after I drained it out and put in 10W30 like the specs call for. As far as gear oil, I ruined a front dif on a 58 Willy's Jeep by using a different weight gear oil. Hard lesson learned there.

Thanks guys! Guess I'll wait until I can get to a store. Put in a new gasket on one side maybe a couple years back and it remains sealed. The other side has been gradually leaking more and more like thst first one did and will need to be replaced. Now, if I can only find where I stuck the second gasket that came in the pack. Seems I've looked everywhere for it...except where it is.

While here, a coffee in a STORMY SOUTHERN mug, please. Under a severe thunderstorm watch, etc... Cool looking sky.

Anesthetic not yet worn off and in PAIN. VIcodin will be my friend all weekend!!

Other alf to be done July 5th or the 8th when he can fit me in.

I have the good drugs, but if this pain keeps up...I will be miserable.

Just a quick cup of coffee, please, it's almost supper time.  Survived the trip yesterday.  It was a hot day and another hot one today.  My thermometer is showing 30.1C (86F) but the official temperature is 25C (77F).  Did some weeding in the flower bed this morning and trimmed around the edges of the lawn with the string trimmer.  Need to charge its battery now.

CNCharlie:  Interesting that you had a sailboat in Gimli.  There sure are a lot of sailboats moored at the dock in Gimli, hundreds of them.  I got a picture of one out on the water.  For some reason I seldom see one out of the docks.  Then there's also all the commercial fishing boats and the expensive yachts.  Had a chat with a commercial fisherman who was leaning over the rail of his boat about the high water.  He was saying that his boat is so high up compared to the dock now that he has to climb to get on and off the deck.  If you'd like to see some of my pictures of the water over the dock, send me a PM.

Reading all those stories of people putting cars into reverse or park at speed reminded me of something that happened to a buddy of mine back in the 60s.  He had a big boat of a '62 Pontiac Parisienne with a big V8 engine.   He was cruising along with his right arm wrapped around his girlfriend and reached through the steering wheel with his left arm to get at the cigarette lighter.  His arm knocked the gearshift lever into park.  Somehow the transmission survived that.  He was pretty hard on vehicles, though.  He was noticing a distinct lack of power so he took it to his mechanic.  He had me drive him there so that I could see what the mechanic had found because he knew I wouldn't believe him.  On, I believe it was 2 cylinders, the valve stems had punched through the rocker arms and the mechanic couldn't even separate them.  Lack of power indeed!  His car survived that too.  They built cars like tanks in those days.  Modern cars would never survive that kind of treatment.

Well, I think I'll go downstairs and stare at my layout for a while to try and decide what to do next.  By then it will be supper time and I won't have accomplished a thing.

Bob:  My favorite tale of woe was one performed by moi when I was about 17 and a little stupid...I was going down the 401 near Woodstock ON when I took it into my head that I wanted to rest something out..so off I go down a turnoff near Paris ON and didst do a reverse...at speed, mind...through neutral and all else...well...it worked but I ended up having no 1st gear or second gear...going through town all in third gear was most interesting...EmbarrassedWhistling

Hello all. Started my weekend early. Took the day off to attend an invitation at the local traffic court , tax collecting station. Wrongly charged with failing to stop at a stop sign. Won my case but they still nailed me for court cost of $65 ! They had at least 200 hundred people there  and the lady down stairs where you pay the court cost and or fine told me that today was a slow day. I asked if they did this every day and she said no only three times a week. The other two days are for other court issues. If they average 200 people a day times three days at $65 each x 4 (month ) = $16,600 x 12 months = $199200 dollars a year in court cost ! I would bet dollars to donuts that they are raking in closer to 1/2 million or more in traffic court/tax collection station .Thats just from a sleepy little country vourt house. This state has found a way to legally steal from its citzens. The Mob doesnt have anything on Va.traffic courts.Wheres Robin Hood when you need him? The Sheriff is up to his old tricks..

My Fathers day/Birthday Cake present came in from my son over in Korea. He sent me "Classic American Railroads" by Mike Schafer.Cool  My seven year old daughter who was looking over my shoulder as I opened the shipping package asked "Dad how are you going to read the book ? Isnt it in Koean ? LaughSmile, Wink & Grin

Ulrich - You got to be kidding me ! A security job with a bad ticker ! I stand corrected on the river bed . Was getting tired at that point . Anyway I have seen some excellant articles on THAT subject in MRR.

Blown out cylinder - Leaning buildings ? I have seen a few walls framed and "leaning" one way or another after a few to many Beer but in your case I am sure the bubble was out on your level , right ?

Stan - around here where I live I have seen some of the art gallaries list painting that are comparable to yours for well over two grand. I would love to see something in N&W Whistling

Curt - Are those in your house ? Skunks ! What kind of pets do they make ?

Galaxy - Do not understand root canal in two sessions and the second not until July ? Owwww

Evening All,

I forgot to mention last night that I put together my PRR signs and mounted them on the appropriate buildings on my layout. They help give a PRR flavor to the layout. I also ordered 1 NJ Intl PRR dwarf signal in O scale. I have read from someone awhile back that it works also for HO, so before I spend for a bunch of them I wanted to test the size.

Galaxy- I can sympathize with you. I have been in your shoes several times. I wish you the best.

Ray- The detail is amazing. Hopefully your son's niece had a one time event.Angel I am putting her in my prayers.

Barry- I believe the below picture goes along with the one you posted earlier.

Stan- Another incredible picture. How do you paint them so quickly?

Ulrich- Don't those government types understand that a job will cut into your MRR time?Whistling

YGW- Yes they are pets. They are descented when you get them. They live about 10 years. They are best described as a cross between a dog and a cat. Most like to be held and scratched but not all, and they sleep most they day out of sight and they use a litter box. They eat like a dog. The hardest thing about them is that they need to be socialized and they have very specific diet needs. Their life spans are directly tied to what they eat. The more natural it is the better quality of life they have. They also only make noise when mad (A screeching sound). They can also be very, very stubborn and are very, very inquisitive. They would rather go hungry than eat something they don't like. MOH had a couple of them as pets when she was a kid. They are predators in the wild and eat pretty much anything given the chance so small animals and birds are not safe loose around them.

Good Evening,

Well I was just about done my post, then poof, up in smoke it went so here I am again.

Stan, great painting and I am really looking forward to your next one especially if it features a NYC Hudson.

Ray, that is one fantastic engine house. I showed my wife the photos and she didn't believe it was a model.

Galaxy, hope you are feeling not too bad. I've gone through 2 root canals and one was as you describe with the draining and then a temporary filing and more drying later. I didn't have any pain though with either one during or after. No worse than a filing.

Well the insurance co. called yesterday morning to tell me that they had looked at my car which is in a body shop and decided there was too much hidden damage so they were writing it off. I was afraid of how much they would give me   but it was a pleasant surprise being 2 grand more than I was going to be allowed in trade on the new(er) one. Lucky I had decided to replace it or I'd really be under the gun as the rental has to go back on Monday and we have only one car. I will pick up the new one Monday. I hope it is as good as the last one which I drove for 11 years. Come to think of it we've only had 3 cars in 29 years of mariage. This will now be the fourth. I'm not counting the '79 Capri(Mustang) I had first as it only lasted 9 months into married life.

I hope to get the underpass kit assembled this week-end as it is now finally painted but who knows. That is the problem with having one largely completed layout, I find I sometimes just run a train around it rather than getting busy on my N scale project.

Hope everyone is well.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf for me this evening.

Lawn's done!  Managed to get 'er done between showers this afternoon........

Thanks for the comments on the Engine House.  It has been a very interesting project to say the least.  By the time I am finished, it will have over 1100 individually cut pieces of scale wood, styrene, metal, and wire in it.  There are 5 belt drive tools in their each have 25 to 30 separate parts as well.  I started putting the rafters for the roof in place this evening.  Then I have a few other parts to fabricate (for instance, the smoke exhaust pipe for the place, and a few other parts),  Then the roof will be made and installed.  One side will be made removable.  Don't want to hide ll THAT fancy stuff inside....Smile, Wink & Grin

Thank you also for the prayers for my son' little niece.  She will be spending the night at Strong Hospital in Rochester.  They will be watching her, and also trying to determine the best route for her long term.  She had 3 Gran Mal seizures in 24 hours......

All you rednecks out there, remember....  "When approaching a four-way stop, the vehicle with the largest tires always has the right of way."  BTW, never tow another car using panty hose and duct tape.....

I'll be spending most of tomorrow out at the Boy Scout Camp,

Catch you all later!

Good evening.

Curt.... Skunks? ... Have you heard the country and western song about a skunk in the road?

YGW ... $65.00 ???... That is highway robbery! ... Enjoy your "Korean book".

Chris ...  Your security guard stories are really something.

Ulrich ... I think you are better than security guard for certain. Perhpas, you should get into politics. You might do well running the government the way it should be run.

Ray ... You son's very young niece will be in our prayers. ... I really like the machine shop.

Galaxy ... Root canals are a pain I know.

Seamonster Bob ... I know waht you mean about staring at the layout while not accomplishing anything.

CN Charlie ... I'm glad you are pleased with the insurance settlement.

Drew ... I like the NKP 765 picture.

I’m glad Duke stopped by with the Berkshire photo.  Below are photos being posted on the internet following the Owosso, MI steam meet. The photography nearly looks like paintings.

Happy Model Railroading.

Good Morning,

I woke up at 5 am, but I slept through - does not happen too often these days.  Beating Bill today!

What´s that nice smell in here, Flo? No, I don´t mean Curt´s pets! Cakes from the griddle? Let me have some, and a mug of coffee, please.

I still don´t know whether to be just amused about the "offer" or to be shocked. I am willing to do just about any job, but two jobs were definitively off my list - security and rest room attendant. I guess i won´t be having much of a choice, though. This ain´t funny!

ZzzZzzZzz

"Breaker 7, this is Fozzy Bear, I have just found a house with an unprototypical HO layout. Fozzy Bear, this is understood. Hold on, we will send the layout police. 10-4, Breaker 7!"

Barry & Garry - a warning has been issued. Low flying locos in your region!

This one was the worst train accident in post-war Germany, taking over 100 lives!

Ken - a long day indeed! At least a few customers showed up. Still pulling for you!

Ray - continuing prayers for your son´s niece!

Curt - I saved that picture on my PC! This is one for Stan to paint!

YGW - those government people don´t care - they have to fulfill a quota, and as long you can still walk, your are able to do such a job - basta & finito l´amore!

Galaxy - Angel

Chris - "about 90 years old, deaf as a utility pole, blind as a bat" - are you sure we have not met before? Smile, Wink & Grin

Today, I´ll probably make a test assembly of my layout, just to do a little tweaking on the electricals.

Have a good one!

I still don´t know whether to be just amused about the "offer" or to be shocked. I am willing to do just about any job, but two jobs were definitively off my list - security and rest room attendant.

Good Evening Gang,

Flo, I'll just have some cinnamon toast and a HC before bed,  thanks.

I just wanted to come in tonight to tell Ulrich that after my 40 year career on the road I became a Security Guard nine years ago.  I believe I will retire again from this one next spring.  But I have actually had a pretty good time of this Guarding business.  You have to remember that most of the job is "OBSERVING AND REPORTING".   Keeping an eye on things to protect your employer and other staff and their records and belongings, also the infrastructure of the company or operation.

It does not mean, at least here, that you have to be a hero and wrestle with people. There are instances where a person is deranged or down a quart or even up a quart where you have to deal with them in a reasonable manner convincing them that what they have on their mind isn't the best idea. But if you can't do that then you just call the authorities to come and handle the situation.  That is what they get paid for. not you.

So I enjoy my Security Job and will be somewhat sad to see it end and leave some good friends behind, but hey, it will be time to do some serious model railroading.   Maybe I can get this puppy close to being finished before I have to turn in my boots.

So Ulrich, my German friend, I say GO FOR IT.   Only downfall is the pay isn't what it should be, but it will get you out there meeting other people and talking to them face to face so that they can see your best qualities and experience which could easily lead to something more lucrative, than all the paper shuffeling that you have been doing.

We are all rooting for you.  Wink.

Sweet dreams all.  Time to do some dream railroading.

Johnboy out..............................and looking for my PJs.

Johnboy - thanks for the input - it always pays to get a second view on issues! Before I could start this type of job, there is a ten week training, mainly on legal matters. In any case, I will go through that training and then see, what may come up. The pay does not really matter, as any amount above a certain level will be taken away to repay my debts. This will end in 2016 ... Sigh

Here are some pictures of my test set-up:

Looks a little more like a layout then before!

It was a good thing to do this test set-up. I found out that I have to add some feeder wires!

GOOD MORNING!!!

It's after 2 and nearly 3 AM and I needed a pain pill so I got up to get one, naturally.

AS far as ROOT CANAL pain, my other one did NOT hurt the day of, but the next 2 days were the worst! He didn't really have the time to do a whole root canal at once,s o he did partial work. My mouth is very small and it is a back molar which is hard to do on anybody but harder for me as I also have TMJ problems {Temporal Mandibular Joint}. I can taste whatever he put in there, hope the temp Fuji cap holds. I shall not brush but around it nor eat anything harder than a boiled egg!! The root canal is the only effort to save the tooth, elsewise, and still if the root canal doesn't do it, it may have to be pulled!

Ugh!

-G .

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Morning All,

Just sitting here going through the posts. The stuff that my son and I moved now has to be integrated into the houseSigh. We couldn't do it yesterday because my son had to go to work at 1430, so we were rushing just to get everything home and close out the storage unit. Later I will be going to the train club. I have been told my friend has been released from the hospital (aortic aneurysm). I have tried contacting him but no answer, I hope he is at the club tonight.

Ulrich- Looking at your setup makes me think how neat it is that with N-scale you can get a entire loop and 2 sidings on a table top.

Everyone take care. Prayers to those in need.
