If you don't know the rules... they are few...keep away from "flame topics" such as politics and religion. No foul or dirty language or jokes. "work" is a four letter word here often spelled "w*rk" or some such to notate it is a "dirty word". Squiggly lines, asterisks etc. in place of foul words are not allowed either, though they sometimes slip in.

Hello to the new guys. Sorry I didn't welcome you before but I've been busier than a small bird stuck in a spiders web lately and it has taken a toll on me. Evening All,
Current temp 96 F. Cool front coming in tomorrow, projected high is 93F. Had to take the truck into the shop today. The check engine light came on 2 days ago. It ended up being a gas cap that had a split in it. No idea how that happened. Got a haircut today. I also found time to finish wiring the last 6 terminal strips. Next step Tortoise preparation. I took a close look today and I only need to modify 2 locations in the framing, not the 6 I previously thought and both can be modified easily
Tomorrow my son and I have to finish unloading a storage unit. The heaviest item is a sleeper sofa. My aching back
Andy- . I lurked for awhile before joining in. I think what the new person issue is that when you read the postings it reads like friends talking to each other and not the standard MRR postings. That's what I thought anyway.

Hi Andy! Welcome aboard. Yep this is a great place to sit and talk with your fellow (and Lady) model railroaders. You can order anything you like from the virtual menu and it is almost always in stock. We tolerate most anyone around here... Heck they even put up with me!
We have a nasty band of Thunder boomers THAT should be passing through the Finger Lakes in an hour or so. Possible hail and high winds with it..... Probably means I will wait until tomorrow to do more mowing of the lawn... Dang! I wanted to play with the new toy.
More Advise: Entertaining at home... A centerpiece for the table should never be anything prepared by a taxidermist. Do not ever allow the dog to eat at the table... no matter how good his manners are.
As time has permitted, I have put a few more odds and ends into the Engine House... Todd, no footprints yet, although a friend at the museum says to have them in spilled oil.... A MMR friend of mine say to make them with very small feet in HO! I made a pair of sawhorses. All workshops need at least one pair of sawhorses don't they?

1 My commission check is 8 days late, down to $12.00.
2 Made a deposit for a check I had out last week, made it 15 minutes late and was charged $28.00 NSF fee.
3 Was charged another $30.00 for continuances over draft? I never got the over draft letter? Did get the the Bank Manager to take the $30.00 off.
4 Had to deposit a extra $30.00 to cover the cost to Friday when they would remove the $30.00 so I could pay the light bill.
5 Cannot afford my Med's because I am missing my commission check and because I had to deposit the extra $30.00!
6 Sue told me her Medicate was canceled because where over paid $15.00 in food stamps. She was wrong, she did get her card today. But after that pieces or wrong information I was done.
7 Have yet another meeting this Saturday, don't have the money for gas, because I have not got a check that is 8 days late!
8 OK, heck with the yard! So I did a little on the Train Front. Hard wired a decoder into my BB Athearn F-7 B. Then I tried to speed match it to the A unit.
8 A Had to change the CV that controls which way it runs. I either wired the motor backwards, or got the trucks backwards.
8 B Was warming up the A and B units for the speed match. B unit kept stalling so it was time to clean the wheels, so I thought.
8 C While cleaning the B units wheels, found there was NO power pick up to the front wheels? So back to the Back Shop!
Well life could be way worst. Rest of my engines are under a full head of steam.

And so was Shaddy the wolfhound.
Will have a Salad, Western Omelet and left over Pizza for dinner. So I guess life is not that bad.

Seamonster, well Bob, hope you have a nice day trip up Gimili way. I sure made that one a lot as I had a sailboat in Gimli for 30 years. We just sold it 2 years ago. I haven't been back to Gimli since then. Cordless electric mowers are great if you don't have a lot of grass. We have a Gardena reel type mower that has a moterized reel so is really easy to push. We've had it about 5 years now and find it very quiet. The only downside is that it won't mow tall grass very well.
Barry, I can tell you that that car record player was a factory option in 1956 Chrysler products. The dash shown is a Dodge Royal which wasn't available in Canada. I have a '56 Motor Trend magazine that explains how they work. They took a special record so really weren't very popular and weren't very good on rough roads. I remember ads for underdash 45 players and I agree that the application that Ray mentioned would have probably been the best one.
Braikie, I think that ME code 55 doesn't have the flange issue that you find with Atlas. When I was deciding on what brand of track to use I bought samples of both Atlas and ME. I went with ME.
We just got in the door from errands and a stop at Dairy Queen but as it is now 10 p.m. I should start thinking about a little eye lid examination.

True Redneck story - One Friday night about 3am we hear this banging on the front door. Myself and my Dad jump and go down to see what the ruckus is all about. When my father opens the door there stands one of the local rednecks drunk as a skunk . Standing there with legs splayed and covered in oak leaves from falling in the ditch and wobbling several directions all at once. He immediatly ask if so and so is in ( who happens to be his drinking buddy). We try to explain to him that so and so lives next door. It took us four or five attempts to explain to him and get him to understand that so and so actually did live next door . When he finally understood, he wobbly turned and as he made his way off our porch (some how with out spilling his Black Label) we could hear him slur " S**t if that hill is any steeper than this one , I will never make it up it! " The next day my dad and I had a good laugh over the whole incident.

Great advice on the computer and e-mail stuff. I never respond to anything the banks, credit cards, e-bay, paypal, ANYthing that is sent to me in E-mail. (unless it’s just verbal conversation with someone ) I always go to my account through MY link and respond there. This has worked several times though I admit, I very rarely ever get that kind of stuff through the E-mail. Couple of Viagra type things once or twice a year, but usually no junk mail. I take that back, since my carrier has changed to a Google account, I get in my quaranteed thing, some UPS package that they can’t deliver about once or twice a month. Don’t know what it is they can’t deliver, I just delete it.
Andy- Glad you stopped in. Key word is self respecting. I drink Lone Star or Pearl whenan get them, Pabst Blue Ribbon if I can’t. Lately it’s been Pabst. Why? Well when I get up from my seat or if I do have someone hold my beer, I know it’ll be there when I get back!

Curt- This thread reads like friends talking because that is what it is. Just a bunch of friends talking. Garry had a great idea by pointing out that we need to make sure that others didn’t get the wrong idea that this is a private club by invite only. I’m glad he did because we’ve made some new friends. That’s one of the things about MRRing. Making new friends with a common interest.
I lurked for a while too. In fact I tried a few other forums with a post or two before finding this one. I wasn’t treated badly, but when I finally stepped through the door of this place, it was different than any other place I had been. Been here ever since.
Ray- Can’t say enough good about that Engine house. Man!
Ken- Hard to believe maybe sometimes, but remember this. No matter how bad things are, there is always someone who has it worse. For this I am thankful. (not that someone has it worse, but…. Well you know what I mean.)

While returning from H-Depot the other day, we saw a tiny little creature barely walking across the road. I thought cat, wife thought chiwahwah. It then slumped down beside the road motionless as we pulled closer. It was a newborn fawn, not even entirely dried off yet. Had to really talk my wife out of stopping. I knew the doe was likely right inside the tree line recovering from birthing the tiny creature. What I should have done was return with my camera for some fresh reference photos. Still kicking myself for not doing so. We've both seen fawns before, just never a newborn. Would have made an excellent subject to paint.

a dull day here in northern Germany - wet & windy. As this is our usual fare, I should not complain. Not much planned for this morning, other than following that "invitation" to see our welfare administration people. Most likely they just want to know how I am doing with my job applications - closing in on 2,000 this month in a two-year time span.
Warning - there could be a rant ahead!
The German economy seems to be doing fine, our government is pondering over tax cuts. Word is out that we have a shortage of qualified labor and therefore should loosen our immigration laws to attract skilled labor, preferably with an academic background. Well, I am qualified and I do have an academic background, plus more than 30 years experience in management jobs - how come i don´t find a job? Oh, I forgot, I´ll be turning 55 in a few weeks - too old for this country.

When I became a member of this forum, I thought this place to be something of a "closed shop" - a platform for folks who really know each other well. Took me some time to collect my guts and knock on the door. It flung wide open! I have never met finer folks than in this place!

Garry - Petra is a blessing for me. Her father died 14 years ago, shortly after retiring. He was a difficult man to be with, strongly opinionated and never much of a family man. He died just when his character "softened". We miss him.

Well, as I entered the Autobahn, I really stepped on it, shifting through the gears in a jiffy. Upon reaching top speed, I shifted into "R" for "Racing" ....

I have been single dadding it for a couple of days with the better-half being out of town for a convention. Andrew turned 14 on the 22nd so we had an inevitable visit to K-10 model trains, because birthday money was burning a hole in his pocket! I was utterly intransigent and refused to make up the difference on a loco that he wanted to buy, so he put it on lay-away and can learn about saving up for something over the next couple of months. He is a good kid and does a couple of hours volunteer work at the local food pantry on Saturday mornings, so there is a work ethic developing and I can see him looking to earn some extra doing odd jobs over the coming few days to speed up the saving process.
It has been only a few days since I stepped in here, but there have been pages of postings, so no way to go back and comment on everything! However there are some notable mentions needed.
Ray the engine house interior is excellent. I have aspirations to do a similar type of scene in a small round house structure that I have planned for my under-construction peninsula. I have a lot of nice detail castings ready for it and hope it comes out half as nice as your model. Great job.
Stan I really like this latest painting. There is something about the light in this one that really appeals to me, the contrast in shadows on the track, that sort of thing. How big is the completed piece?
Ken How many of the motors we purchased seem to be bad on your end? 1 of my 4 is bad for sure, curious about your 6? Not expecting any restitution, but thought I would at least send a note to the eBay seller and see what if anything they have to say about it. I sure hope business picks up at the store. Is this typical seasonal variation in your trade? Folks are looking outside to spend their money, not on interior things like bedrooms?
Ulrich pleased to see your goodies arrived in-tact. I am looking very much forward to seeing what you accomplish with the content. Regarding the stream, I think you need to be a bit careful with coloring unless you are really trying to create an illusion of depth. But it seems to me that your stream would not be all that deep? Perhaps there might be the odd pool of water that is a bit deeper where some coloring of the base could help suggest that?

I received another IRS.gov email this morning. Same content as before except for the .zip file. The one I got yesterday contained a Trojan. This new one contains a full-blown virus called FakeAlert. The email providers Norton Antivirus didn't pick it up but my AVG did. Here's the scan result screen:I guess I'll just have to block the IRS from my inbox.

Simon I am starting to think my meter is bad. All of the new motors have now tested bad, but now I am getting the same weird readings on my Athearn Motors? Tested one yesterday and and free wheeling in the chassis it started out at 0.20 amps, but bounced around a lot and up to .45. Ran it longer and it started getting into the 3.0 range and hit a high of 16.5 amps? I don't see having this many bad motors, these are all replacement motors that should be good. I need to get these tested before I write them off.
Do you think it could be be Transformer? Think you said you used a battery when you tested yours? If so what sizes?
Far as Work Front All the stores are slow, but mine has just plan stopped! I hope this meeting is about advertising, we have been promised some. I think the whole store is only around $12,000.00 in sales for the month. I had been doing $12,000.00 a week my self till this month.
Train Front Pulled the F7 B unit back apart and see no real reason I should not have power pick up from the front trucks. There was a lot of oil between the truck and frame (using a Digitrax T/A wiring harness) so cleaned that up and will test tonight. I all so re soldered the wires to be safe.

ULRICH: Regarding THAT redneck joke about the redneck on the Autobahn. Way back in 19 and 86...a girl in my high school driver's ed. class was motoring along Interstate 380 above Cedar Rapids. The instructor told her to pass the car ahead. So, she, at 55 mph, puts the car into Paaasssssssing gear. Yup. From D back through N and R to P.
Her final grade turned out better than the transmission...
RAY: The shop..."WOW!" doesn't even begin to cover it. Amazing stuff. Hey, now THAT you've got THAT fancy new mower...why not bring it to Iowa and give it a real workout???

Imagine that. I have an equally spoiled Chocolate Lab if you're interested. Of course I'll have to supply a list of required treats and the schedules and list of events for recieving them. You'll have to have a suitable couch, and enough room on the bed to stretch out for a few hours when bedtime comes. Your house temp seems to be ok so you probably won't require a fan, and oh yes, almost forgot, the list of necessary television shows at bedtime to be playing until sleep overtakes. All that is the easy part. Getting her away from Brenda will take the entire U.S.Army Rangers. If they are lucky.

Initial tests were with a plain old 9V battery because I was lazy and had one laying on my desk. Subsequent testing was done with a cheap Bachmann train-set level DC power pack, so more real voltage levels. It was using the power-pack that I identified my bad motor.

Didn't make it in here this morning to post. Been busy getting Stuff done around here... Got about half the front lawn mowed. Wanted to get as much done as I could before the liquid sunshine shows up. Grass was wet from showers overnight anyway. need to do some major house cleaning today, and then get over to my son's house to watch the granddaughters. My son called to remind me earlier, and to let me know his niece was taken to Strong Hospital in Rochester this morning. She is not quite 2 years old and had a very bad siezure (couple of them actually) this morning. She hadn't had one in some time now (had them as an infant but they thought she had outgrown them). She also is having some developmental issues (something happened at her birth causing all this). She can 't walk or talk at all yet. Please keep her in your prayers!

Slow day here at w**k (see I catch on quick). I would order a beer but a coke will have to do for about another 4 hours. It is a cloudy overcast day here in the Fort. Temp in the mid 60s. Like several others my lawn is in need of a grooming and I have to tackle some jungle like growth in the fence line and next to my house. Now this is the sweet deal I have for lawn grooming. My neighbor has a very small yard. It is about 8' by 30' and all of it a local utility easement. He does not have a lawnmower. I have not had to cut my lawn myself since spring of 2010. I provide the mower and the neighbor provides the labor. How's that for a sweet deal? We generally split the gas. I also have let him put in a vegtable garden in my back yard. And I get some free fresh vegtables. At least in the past. This year he has no gotten around to planting yet (2 kids, girlfriend, & Ex-wife) so I am not sure there will be much harvest to reap.
