I told Brenda as we were leaving Springfield from returning the truck the Packing Plant lets us borrow, "I haven’t seen ground to cloud lightning bolts that strong and bright and (wow) big, in a looooong time. You know, it isn’t really bright to drive into this thing.” She looked at me and said nothing. I knew what she meant and what we had to do. (trumpet sounds dum-dada-durum)Drive on….. her baby was alone and probably scared. Spoiled dog. The high will be in the mid 90's and it will be partly cloudy.I was going to continue work on the U25B this morning but my mother may need me to take her to the dentist. She doesn't know yet. She had the appointment info written in her appointment book. Guess what has gone missing. You got it, her appointment book. So until I know different all activities are on hold. I don't want to get tied up with something only to have to stop in a hurry. Last night I had a pleasant online chat with several friends. It's a good way to pass the time.

The molar with half a root canal finished is infected and the antibiotic alone is nto fighting it off. Spent most of yesterday heaving my guts out. Last night was even worse. Heaved my guts out half the night. Was ready to have tooth pulled!!! Dental Services wants to try another {I think its a steroid pack} medication on it before pulling. SO waiting for THAT to get filled.MOH will go get it before work at 12:15. I naturally feel lousy. I did try to eat something this AM although I don't feel like it at all. I can taste the infection and MOH can smell it!! MAkes my tummy upset!!
So the good morning above was in spirit, not actual!

It´s a hot and sunny day today - temps are at a scorching 93 F. Normal weather is coming back soon, this means lots of starting on Wednesday.
I am sorry if I have come across that I would not want this job. I´d do anything to get out of the situation we are in, but I have my doubts that I will earn enough to pay for our living. Anyway, I don´t have a choice, so I might as well start to feeling comfortable with that thought. The only thing that really eats me up is that it´ll take me even farther away from my dream of that log cabin by the lake, the red pick-up parked in the driveway and Germany many miles away, somewhere over the Big Pond.
Depending on the typ of job, I might even find the time to work on my PhD

Found out the info on my mother's dental appointment. It's at 3:30 this afternoon -- in Alexandria, meaning I'll have to leave here at noon. Not the way I was planning to spend my day, not to mention having my ankle the size of a grapefruit for several days afterward. I should charge by the hour for things like this!

Ken, you have to call around to the large printing companies in your area. The only work I got from the smaller printing shops was typesetting on my home computer, and I can’t remember the software I had to use, but they provided me a copy of it for home use.

Not much to report from the land of Buckeyes on this sunny Monday other then NS OCS train will roll through here Wednesday and I plan on being trackside early..Went to the club yesterday and worked on the freight car that gave me greif during the open house..Upon cleaning the wheels and a closer inspection I found a chipped flange..I changed out the wheels to metal.That's my major HO winter project changing out the plastic wheels to metal.
Slate Creek news..I decided to change the produce distributor to a Crispy Creme bakery-in flower,sugar and vegetable oil.Out: Empties.Of course I have a Pillsbury batch plant as well..

Good morning, all. Nothing for me, thanks, Flo. I just got back from the dentist where I had a tooth pulled so I've got a mouff fulla coddon an I tuk funnee. Two more teeth to pull on Wednesday (molars) and I get a full upper in a few weeks. Meantime, I'll be on a liquid and mush diet. My wife is threatening to put a complete roast beef dinner (meat, potatoes, veggies, gravy) through the blender for me. No thanks. Galaxy I can relate to an infected tooth. Had a couple or three over the years. As a matter of fact the one she pulled today was infected a couple of weeks ago. Thank goodness the antibiotic worked well. I did have one once where the pain wouldn't go away no matter what she did, so I can relate to what you're going through, although mine wasn't nearly that bad. It will pass.
Yougottawanta: I would think it would be impossible to erase anything written in pen on the back of the license without leaving very obvious marks and the next time a cop looked at your license you'd be in a lot more trouble than the speeding ticket.
Howmus: I hope they find the cause of your son's neice's problems quickly. (Would she be your grandneice?) I can only imagine what her parents are going through. Our grandson was born with birth defects and spent the first 7 months of his life in hospital, underwent a number of surgeries on his mouth and jaw and stomach and had to be fed through an abdominal tube for almost 2 years. It sound like the hospital your grandneice is in is a good one so hopefully they can find a cause and a cure.
Ulrich: I feel for you, but you just gotta pull yourself out of the dumps. I've been there, more than once. But I've got two very good friends to help pull me out. One is my wife of 46 years. You've got a lovely wife from what I've read of her here (sorry, I've just forgotten her name). Lean on her for support. My other good friend is a buddy I've known since high school days. Unfortunately he lives 1500 miles away but we correspond frequently by email. He often gets depressed too, and when he's depressed I try to pull him up and when I get depressed he tries to pull me up. I hope you've got a good buddy like that when you're feeling down. I think most of us have at one time or another worked at undesirable jobs just to pay the bills. There's no shame in that. After all, someone has to do it, and every little bit of income helps. I don't think there's any stigma about being on welfare either. In today's times, there are thousands of people who used to have good jobs but due to downsizing or whatever, have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. Once you get past a certain age, it's harder to get a decent job. Our son had been unemployed for a long time due to his former company moving out of Canada to the U.S. He's almost 40 and has no marketable skills so he's having a hard time getting a job. He's got a good prospect right now and we hoping and praying it pans out. As for security guard, there's nothing wrong with that. Yes, some security jobs come with a lot of hassle but some can be pretty cushy. I worked in a high security building for my last year and they had a security guard at the front door. He mostly sat behind a desk and logged people in and out and called employees down to collect their visitors. He was a heck of a nice guy and everyone would stop by his desk and chat with him. One of my wife's brothers-in-law was a security guard for a number of years. He worked in a hospital for a few years. What he didn't like about that was the supercilious attitude the doctors had towards the security people as if they were a lower life form. He also worked nights at the government insurance company's lot where wrecked vehicles were brought for inspection and disposal. He enjoyed that because it was quiet at night. Not every security job is pounding the beat at a mall and chasing our unruly teenagers.
Oh, boy, this is going to be a long one. I'm betting it puts me up at the top of the next page again.
On Saturday we attended our eldest granddaughter's high school grad. It was held at the regional school in a small town near the town she lives in. Two hours in a school gym packed full of people, getting hotter by the minute, and a sound system that echoed so badly I couldn't make out what they were saying. Our granddaughter graduated with honours and received an award for something. I couldn't make out what they said the award was for and we forgot to ask her afterwards. Here's a picture of her with her boyfriend. It's kind of hard to see her with another guy's arms around her, holding her tight. That used to be my job for so many years. They just grow up way too fast. Come to think of it, I felt that way about our daughter--her mother--when she was that age.
While I was in the town where she and her mother live, I took some photos of a structure I want to scratchbuild. It's a restaurant out by the highway at a very busy border crossing. I would guess that they built it with the Alpine style roof in order to make the sign "EAT" visible to people as they clear customs at the border and would entice them to turn off and stop there for a meal. It was the shape of the roof and the big "EAT" sign that caught my interest. This photo was taken the first time we saw it in 2006. The restaurant has changed hands a couple of times since then and the "EAT" sign has been replaced by "BAR + GRILL," but I'm going to model it with the "EAT" sign. Right now it's closed and I don't know if it will re-open or not.
I came across this beat up gondola on a siding at the edge of the town. It's pretty beat up, rusted and graffitied.
I also saw a a rail grinding train parked on a siding but it was badly obscured by trees and bushes and I would have had to climb through bush and trespass on RR property to get any decent photos, so I didn't. Pity, because one rarely sees those monsters and even more rarely sees them in operation, although I did have that pleasure once. No camera with me though.
Well, that was my weekend. I'm not looking forward to Wednesday at the dentist's. And it's going to spoil my Canada Day plans on July 1. We always to to a provincial park not far away and spend the day vegging and going in the water and just doing nothing, forgetting the cares of life. And eating hamburgers for lunch at the concession stand. He makes fantastic burgers. Big, thick, juicy, everything but the kitchen sink in them. Good food all around. I think I'll take a couple of Cheese Whiz sandwiches on fresh white bread with the crusts cut off. I should be able to gum that. I'll buy a soft drink though, and watch my wife eat a burger and onion rings. Oh well, I can get a dish of soft ice cream in the afternoon, I'll be able to gum that down. Now if the weather holds out (they're predicting 24C [75F] and showers..

Bob, actually she isn't really my Grandniece as she is my DIL's sisters daughter...... I am kinda the adopted Great Uncle though.
Seems to be quite a bit of dental problems going around the diner lately.... Something in the food??? No, no, Flo, I was only kidding... Really!!! I have had 3 root canals over the last decade. Ended up only losing one of the teeth so far. THAT one was a bicuspid I broke about 35 years ago. By the time I had the root canal on it there wasn't much left holding it in my mouth. Ended up with a crown that lasted a few years, but finally the pencil lead sized bit of enamel still holding in place broke and the dentist, shaking his head (he doesn't like losing the battle....) decided it was time to pull it. I now have a permanent bridge (crown) on the teeth on either side of the one I lost THAT covers the whole thing. So far (knock on wood) it hasn't given me any trouble at all. The other two root canals have been no problem either.
I did a bit of w*rk this morning readying the shed by my garden for a coat of paint later this week. Sure needs it! Also got a couple tiny posters to put up in the Engine House done (printed). This afternoon I will mosey out to Boy Scout camp and do at least one more campsite. Have to find out which sites will be in use the first week and go from there.

Hello all.
I have one other root canal in an upper bicuspid that is also crowned. Like Ray's dentist, my dentist will choose preservation of natural teeth over just yanking, and has been very good to me as the first crown he ever did was NOT approved by Medicaid but he used his influence with the hospital {the dental clinic is part of the hospital} and his "own time and energy" to do the crown. I'm not sure if medicaid now covers but I have had two other crowns and a root canal that I didn't have t o pay one red cent for. which is how my medicaid dental coverage is suppsoed to work..though they generally or used to only cover fillings and yankings.
The problem is I have a very small mouth and he was working the files inthe started holes by his fingers, rahter than the dental drill as the drill with the long files is all but impossible to get in my mouth back there. It may take 3 sittings to get it all done. Also My dentist is at the clinic only one day a week, fridays. He will be in on tuesday July 5th for a make up day. His other days are spent going around various spots in the county as the county's low-income, and/or "special people" dentist. There are two other dentists at teh clinic but my dentist is special. he can work on me standing up as laying me back causes my airway to be cut off. Most other detnists can't work unless the lay you all the way back and down. I can't breathe that way.
If the infection keeps up and the new stronger antibiotic doesn't help, I will have it pulled by weeks end. Maybe by one of the other clinic's dentists, who I don't care much for in attitude wise.

A rare "simple" day as obligations for THAT Editor don't fall until later in the week. I oughta get busy with the saw and do some much-needed tree trimming today. I need to write an article about a WW2 vet who was on an Honor Flight to Wash. DC back in May. I met and interviewed him last Thursday, neat guy! He was a supply Sgt. with the US Army Air Corps (or, "Corpse" as our current POTUS would say...) in China. I doubt very many Americans even know our guys were fighting the Japanese, in China, during the war. Korea may be "the forgotten war," but I think China-Burma-India may be "the forgotten theatre." Anyhow, I need to dig up a little background information on the Honor Flights, to go with the article. I'm still percolating in my mind over the discussion I had with the guy, trying to figure out how to put his words to paper.
One thing for sure, I enjoyed my time with him a helluvalot more than the time I had to spend in tattoo shop!!!!!

Good afternoon. I checked in a couple of times today but have not been able to say hello. Typical Monday at w**k. If it could go wrong Friday, while I was out it did and continued through today. Water line stake out wrong on 6 units, street not washed by excavator for the weekend ,VP of course had to comment on it, inspectors showed up today and informed the company installing the water/fireline services that all of the units they have run so far (12) all wrong. Dig them back up and put the valve where the plans show them to go, near the main. When these were installed months ago ( before I started ) the inspectors told the vender to put the valve near the house, not at the main. Of course on three of these units we have curb and gutter and asphalt installed. . Oh and my car is in the shop for transmission problems and its gonna be a grand to fix it I think I will roll back the clock and go back to and start over.

A friend of mine before any one was allowed to date his daughter they had to meet with him first. When they came by he was ALWAYs cleaning his shot gun. You're lucky to have such an understanding dentist. When you find one like that a person will wait for them to be available rather than take someone else. That's the way with our dentist. She is kind and compassionate and tries her best to accommodate my special needs. She is so good with her patients that our daughter and granddaughter will travel an hour and a half back to the city for dental work. I have a severe balance problem that started with an untreated ear infection when I was 7 years old. If my head is level with the rest of my body, or worse, lower, I lose my sense of balance. I just lean against the wall and chat with her or her assistant for a few minutes after I get up and I get enough balance back to walk. It all comes back in a few minutes. Even the little bit that she or her hygienists tips me back will cause some mild loss of balance. The worst times were when we lived in an isolated northern town and our dental service was a group from a clinic in the city who would fly in for a few days. They didn't like having to come up there and just wanted to get the work done fast and go home. They didn't give a *** about my request to not tip me all the way back. One of them tipped me far enough back that my head was well below my body, left me like that for half an hour while the freezing did its thing (I'm convinced he did it just out of meanness) then worked on the tooth and turned me loose. I could barely remain upright much less walk. I gave him a piece of my mind and as I staggered out the door I overheard him tell the nurse to make sure he never worked on me again. That was okay with me.

This morning I finished wiring the U25B, installed a Digitrax DZ143 decoder i had laying around, programmed it then gave it a test run. Then I bundled the wires together then taped them and the decoder down so they're out of the way and put the shell back on. Then I tested it again. No problems. Put in new coupler boxes and #119 couplers. Now it truly is a horse of many colors. Stewart frame and shell, Kadee couplers, Proto 2000 coupler boxes, Proto 2000 trucks, Athearn wheels and gears, Bachmann 8-pin socket, Digitrax decoder, Proto 2000 worms, shafts, flywheels, Proto Power West motor. The main thing is, it works.

Been a long day. Did some removal of some old wire fence next to the shed by the garden so I can paint it soon. Then headed out to camp to do some more trimming around the tents in sites. Got one tent site almost completed this afternoon. it is our largest site and one of the most popular as the Scoutmasters like it because it is next to the "Shower House".... Can you say "Flush Toilets?" I also went back through the ones I did last Saturday and trimmed brush that can't be cut with the trimmer. I will go back out Wednesday, finish the large site, and then do all the Lean-to sites. I will then have all the campsites done THAT will be used the first week of camp, so If I don't get back out until next week (first week of camp) it won't be a problem.
Got home at suppertime and then had to make up one of my famous Potato Salads for the MLK Committee Picnic tomorrow night. I think tomorrow I shall have some muscles I have forgotten about talking back at me....
Best be heading to bed as I have to be up early and get out to the museum tomorrow morning. My Cub Scout Pack (I am their Commissioner) is going to the Museums for a tour. Should be fun if the weather co-operates. Predicting thunderboomers off an on all day.

Good things that happened today.
1 Local Sub Shop bought by free samples, guy handing them out is a guitar player and he gave me 4 samples!
2 Sealy Mattress Company gave me another $68.00 in spiff money.
3 Heard about a dental clinic that will do any dental work for $25.00. Nick, one of the guys that work for us just had a wisdom tooth pulled for $25.00. He knew I was having problems while he was as well. I will be calling them Tuesday for details.
I do hate not using my dentist, good dentist PLUS HE IS TRAIN PERSON. Walls are covered with O scale trains. One of the reason I like going. He all so sat up shop close to a rail yard, so he can watch trains.
Simon Now I know why Andrew seldom smiles, you zapped him a few times to many! I all so now know why the lads are so well behaved, afraid you will go all Dr Frankenstein on them.
Ulrich I will watch all of the video you posted later, sure is a odd looking steam engine. Speaking of U Tube, did you watch any of the old TV shows of "Casey Jones" that was posted about on the main page? If not, you need to watch them. They are a blast from the past!
Far as the security job do you know you have it or is it just a maybe? If nothing else, it will get you out of the apartment. I was starting to go stir crazy myself when I finally got a job. Plus you never know where the job could lead! They will see your superior intellect and advances you. You never know where the road will lead to till you follow it.
I am sure you remember when I got hired by Ashely Furniture then the weekend after I was hired one of the owners died and I lost my job due to funds being tied up in court? If that id not happen, I would not have the job I have now! Pretty sure Ashely would not let me play guitar at work.

Ken - those odd looking locos were quite popular in the early 1900´s, when a lot of backwoods railroads ran right through the villages. They were a little light-footed, a modern compact car has about twice the power! On that security job - no, it´s not a firm offer. I need to take that 10-week training and then we will see. I am going to register for that today.
Not much model railroading planned in the next days. I am waiting for a few small odds and ends to arrive, before I can go on. It´s that one piece of track I am missing and a level crossing I want to put on one of the straight modules. Heaven alone knows how long it will take for delivery....

I found an article on how a guy modeled a Burlington grain hopper. A PS 4740 (Athearn PS 3-bay covered hopper), in the 1960s freight car gray with big red letters scheme. But, the *fill in the blank* author only said "I then painted the car gray." So, out of the dozens upon dozens of "gray" paints out there...what would you recommend??? I've got a foobie all stripped and waiting for paint and decals, this might make a nice "blast from the past" mixed in with my BN grain fleet. I've got a general all-purpose homebrew "hopper gray" THAT might w**k OK, but if there is a "correct" color, I'd appreciate hearing 'bout it.
STAN: Pal, I forgot to bestow the proper on your latest painting. I suffered through painting back in my wasted college days (the time in college was a waste, I wasn't "wasted," just felt the need to clarify... "let me be clear..."). I switched to acrylics very quickly. Since I put-off completing assignments until the night before they saved my hide. But, I never was able to get any "depth," everything came out as flat as a newspaper comic strip. For the final project, I took a 3'x3' Masonite panel I found laying around in one of the art rooms, and tried to paint one of my fire scene photos. It was of an old two story brick house which was fully engulfed in flames. One lone firefighter was silhouetted in front of it ( 3 AM fire). My painted version came out looking like a cartoon. Picture Opus the penguin in front of armagedon...
