Good Morning,
Those guys in Detroit kill me with the way the design some of the parts for the Automotive world. I was told when they design a car they factor in how long it will take to replace a part, if it’s too simple they redesign it to take longer. I believe it after trying to replace a water pump on a Chevy car. The engine was mounted sideways and had about 10 inches between the water pump and the fender. They installed (I swear the fish was this big) 20” bolts in that water pump. I had to remove the inside fender, battery, battery mount, fender stiffener, air filter, air filter box, and tire to pull the bolts out.

Good Morning All,
32F anda light frost on everything this morning but it is drying out. The day before Icame home last week we had 4.6" of rain in a day (a months supply during the rainy season). With the ground still mostly frozen it all backed up with water running in the basement floor drains but just a tiny bit (couple of puddles). Neighbors weren't so lucky and several had feet of water to contend with. Shop roof held up all right and just one small leak in the house roof by the chimney again so we'll get that addressed this week.
Jeff - the best of all worlds, eh? Japanese starter on Dodge van. They make the Denso in about 8 different configurations but all with the same basic castings. We end up machining the solenoid cases to move the attachment points but it really isn't a very good design. The other issue we have with them all the time is fractured internal solenoid wires whci we solder back up and bed in silicone sealant. I'm sure you didn't need the harrassment the other day - I guess it's punishment for getting away with just a battery on the lawn mower?
Rob - nice idea on the door knob water towers!. We have an N scale gas ball that was used for storing natural gas at one of the plants and it was modeled in N scale by an old brass float for a valve. perfectly spherical and the mount hole in the bottom was easily adaptable for the supply pipes.
Ken - the BoA article was in AOL news business section. It seems to have disappeared but was about their currying favour with legislators in Hawaii by providing a special number to directly access a loan modification program which was unavailable to the public or their attourneys There are a couple of other articles on the AOL news site that may interest you, but I can't find the first one I gave the link to.

***Garry, that is a great layout pic. I'm still blown away with the magnitude of the devastation in Japan. Those folks are facing a real nightmare. Looks like Katrina on steroids.
Picked up a dozen (HO) MiniMetals on the-bay earlier for the wife. Even at good prices they really added up. Oops, I best stay off there until something sells for me. Has been rather dismal in that department.
Almost 3:30am, so going to call it a night. Rob
I do believe the foam will work fine. I got the rough shape cut and two pieces glued to make a 4" high wall. Test fitted with some maneuvering and it will make it. Next, some carving, a smattering of drywall mud, some color and then install and support. some ballast, dirt and a few loose stones and it's on to the next step. More plastered paper towels.
Garry- Just wanted you to know youand your Mother are still in my prayers.
While the glue was drying I also worked a bit on the Bed and Breakfast that I did have named.....but forgot what I was gonna call it. To bad. I think it was a good one. I need to write this stuff down.

Evenin' folks!
Flo just a cup of decaf for me. I'll go sit in the back booth by the stove.
Yep still need to fire up the old wood stove around here. I have at least a face cord of firewood left for the season, so I light it when it starts getting down in the 30's around here. Currently 32 °F and dark... very dark outside. Lots of clouds in the sky tonight.
Stopped by the Value Store and bought some hooks for the peg board and a drawer type organizer for the workbench. Also got a small strip of wood textured foam stuff (8' long) to dress up the top and sides of the pegboard area a bit. One thing I want is a couple of the pegboard brackets that can hold a 4 or 6 " wide shelf. I have a couple in the main workroom/shop, but nobody appears to have them anymore. may have to buy them on line..... little by little it is coming along. I will be happy to have some room back to work on projects rather than shuffling junk around to get enough space to sit it down.
After I went over to feed my sisters cats, I headed out to my son's house for a Turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Dessert was a warm, fresh from the oven, brownie with vanilla ice cream on it.... Yum!
Prayers for all in need!

Good Evening All,
Spent the day doing chores though I did get some more benchw..k up. Moved the parts of the old layout out of the storage shed and after taking a good look at it all have decided to scrap it and salvage as much of the scenery, track and turnouts as possible. The asphaltic base track bed is easy to strip out though the bed itself probably isn't of any use with all the ballast glued to it. May try soaking the roadbed in water to see if the glue holding the ballast will soften enough to come off. The Woodland scenics foam track bed just tears when the track is removed and the air conditioner seal tears the track to bits instead of letting it go. When I put the pieces up I'd anticipated a few months storage, not two years in an unheated shed. All the wood bits warped and the cardboard roads delaminated. The hobby foam sheet roads were still intact, but the paper based stone sheet had all warped and bubbled. The biggest reason to send it all is the shape of the layout has changed so much, none of it will really fit any more.
Interesting - the above just posted all by itself. Think I'll head off to bed and check in tomorrow from the shop puter instead of this finicky old laptop. CUL, J.R.
Got sidetracked on the way to the train room. Spotted the box of old door knob parts and thought to self, one of those knobs resembles the main component of a city water tower. So, with a rubber hammer and the aid of a vise, I liberated the knob. Perhaps I'll try grinding down the small end to fit into a section of PVC pipe. Not sure if this project will go anywhere or not. It's not like I don't have a big enough H.D.List already.
Not sure I'll make it to the train room afterall. A bit tuckered out tonight.
Rob
Howdy.Just got back from dinner. Remember when I said if I was lucky the FFA banquet last night would cover the weekly dine out? Well, let's say I wasn't quite that lucky.
Molded three rock faces for to use as tunnel liners. Or at least for what you can see, however, after looking at the picture Ken posted....I'm thinking, why not make it out of layered foam. I have several leftover scrap pieces that may work out just dandy. I didn't build the inside of the tunnel at the mouth with any support other than that for the trackbed so I have to fashion and support a base and backing for the tunnel rock walls. The foam may make that a whole heck of a lot easier. IF I can get it in there between the supports and the wall. So far the cart is still behind the horse for the other tunnel entrances. They are still wide open for the rock faces or whatever liner and ballasting I should do first. Do what I'm doing once and you should not forget to do it again. Somewhat uncomfortable to put it mildly.
Ken- I'll have to measure the height I need. I am seriously thinking of coating a block of wood with plaster or joint compound and making it look like a poured cement abutment. Even though the thing may have been wood or stone when it was first built many years ago, the old wooden trestle was replaced with the under girder type probably well into the time they would have been using concrete. More than likely they would have replaced the abutment if it was stone and probably for sure if it was wood. Especially since it's my story.
Back down stairs to explore the foam idea. Unless I get sidetracked.
Evening Folks!
Flo, I take a Pitcher Please.
Work Front Was a pretty boring day as a whole and not the $3000.00 day I was hoping for. Had one good sale to start the day with for $1,000.00 and the petered off. Main challenge today was to stay awake. Ended up with $1900.00 so it was a disappointment.
Todd I used the plaster retaining wall's for my bridge abutments. All so used them as tunnel liners.
Wooden portal and abutments where used when the mine was started, and as they expanded the mine and added the second bridge they used stone. How tall is the bridge? I think I have a few left and painted if you think they would work for you. Let me know how tall it is and I will check the height of the walls.
See you all Monday.

Need to go attend to some farm chores. More like ranch work, but for some reason most folks refer to it as farm work. Have never figured out why that is. Anyway, going to work on wiring under the wife's (HO) layout tonight.
Healing thoughts to those in need.
Cheers! Rob
Evening!
Just stopping in again.
Chloe, a tall milk and a burger, please.
Today was uneventful, to be honest. Slept in a tad too late, unloaded the coal dad brought home yesterday. Worked on the layout a little, comtemplating whether or not to pull up a small about of mainline to place a switch and move a industry away from the others. I'm saving that for another day.
The kitchen can now be called that. The stove and the refrigerator are now in their new homes, and we just have to make the cabinet that the sink sets in. After that we make the rest of the cabinets, lay the marble we have on it, and make the railing to complete our new galley-style kitchen.
The family is in good health and spirits. Dad's recent job application was very promising, but lost it, as much as we can figure from the oddly written letter, due to being overqualified. My sister is doing well in her nursing studies, and is currently at the local guard barracks in a pre-boot camp training.
Hope the rest of the day and the coming week are good to you all.

Afternoon,
I really needed a break from things around the house so I went to the Youngstown MRR show in Niles, Ohio this morning.
I Spent $150.00; $5 admission, picked up NYC Lantern with a red lens, a RR kerosene can, 5 RR coffee mugs, a cover plate from a Cleveland street car, 26 caboose hobbies ground throws, a Cincinnati Northern 40ft box car, PRR N-5c caboose kit, a small parts hand vice, a set of heavy gage dental picks, an all metal horse head oil pump (can be motorized), set of cast metal mail boxes, 2 cast metal mail cranes with pouches, 2 CP two bay hoppers, 3 18” all brass modeling clamps, nibbling tool, small anvil, steam engine quarterer, coupler height gage, new NMRA Standards gage, tenex bottle glued to a piece of marble, Proto 2000 NIB Ann Arbor 52FT gondola, an Atlas WYE, and had lunch at McDonald’s on the way home.

Hm. Must be the only one around today.
Anyway, as alluded to, here is my progress on the bridge so far. I t is two Micro engineering 50ft'ers. The center section is in tact and the ends are the other one cut in two to fit. Rough, but there's still much to be done to clean it up.
As you can see, it needs another support. The I-beams looked much larger in the bag at the LHS. I figure I can dupe the supports on the short ends and make them tied together with a cross bracing. It'll take away from the spindley look I hope. The far ends will have the abutments of course.
Top shot. You can see I need to work on tying the tracks together. I would like the supports to be wider, but there is a clearance issue to deal with. I use the Super Dome as a tester because it is the tallest and longest car I have and if it clears, then all the others will too. Or should. Plus since I am in the modern era, it would be reasonable to expect get a few cars in the future that equal the cars size if not exceed a bit.
You notice the second level has no foam. That's because the space I had to make the climb would not allow another inch and definately not a 2 inch, rise before I needed to be flat for the station at Gold Creek. as it is, part of the train will still be on the incline starting with a 5th car. I will probably add a thinner sheet of foam for the terrain portion giving the apperance of a rise and fall of the land. But that wil be down the road far enough for me to forget or change my mind
Workbenches?? Say, this is the cleanest it's been in a long time without having been cleaned off.
Ooops. MISSY! Go lay down! Sorry. Here it is.
Welp, back to the basement. Think I'll spend some time on the inside of the tunnel before I forget.

Been working under the van today. I was having a problem with the starter cutting out. Turned out that the wire coming from the battery was a little loose. Just a simple job to tighten the nut right? Not so simple. It's a Denso starter and the wires connect on top between the exhaust manifold and the starter. Wonder what wise guy thought that one up? So this had gone from a simple tightening of a nut to removing the starter so I could get to the nut to tighten it. And before somebody says 'why didn't you just take the doghouse off and get to it from the top?' I tried that already. The aforementioned exhaust manifold is in the way and my wrist doesn't bend in that many directions at once. So after ten minutes I have the starter loose. Now comes the fun part. The power wire from the battery and the trip wire from the ignition relay are together in one unit. The wires don't come down very far so I have to balance the starter on my left hand while using a box-end ratchet wrench with the right hand to tighten the loose nut. Boy, this was getting to be fun! Well with that done I reinstalled the starter making sure the wires didn't push up against the exhaust manifold. That done I got out from under there and gave the key a turn. Nothing! Zip, zero, bopkiss! Then it hit me. It would probably work a whole lot better if I reconnected the battery! I did that and tried it again and it fired up with no hesitation. You know, it took longer to put that darn thing back on than it did to take it off and tighten the wire.
Ray- I read about the piano on some site and got pretty much the same opinion as you got from the museum. I assumed they would be a neat thing to have and I suppose, for some, the design would be appealing as a conversation or decorative piece of furniture. A novelty so to speak. The descriptions of the design of the musical end of it however made it apparent they are of no real musical worth anymore (or apparently then either) and the only use would be for decoration or a piece of history. They also made reference to the weight. I suppose the harp would bring something for scap value, but depending on what it is made of, maybe not. I guess they were plentiful back then and the volume doesn't even make it worth much for rarety. Still, I think they look neat. NO, I don't want one!
As for the kids and respect, they were rather respectful and fairly obedient. Pigs, but they too can be obedient. One kid was a bit smart-alecky with his little cutesy comments and facial expressions (you've seen them. The ones that not too many years ago would have been "wiped off your face"), but according to the DJ (who is also a bus driver for the school) he is "a rich kid from Sherman who is that way all the time. Thinks he's somebody and can get away with anything because his parents have money." Spoiled kid who needs knocked down a peg is the way I'd put it. But even he, wasn't a problem really. BUT, if he were in MY day........
Times are different I guess. But in my opinion, some things never change and respectfulness to a teacher, someone in charge or an elder is one of them. For the most part they were ok and just having fun. (though they could have done what they did in their homes and saved five bucks.)
Wow lunch time already? Just another cup of dark roast coffee for me right now, Zoe, I'll have lunch later i think.
TMarsh Ray- You are NOT fooling me. I know the pegboard is just a view block. Old piano huh? I can see it. You do know some pie-anny people would be a bit upset with you for doing that to one of those ( can’t think of the type.. spinet? Console. ) As for me, I can’t think of a better workbench for you than a musical instrument. Very befitting.

Todd, the piano is /was a square piano built in the 1860's. They were a popular home type of piano back then. I got the piano as a "You want it? Take it!" from a church I was choirmaster/organist at back when I first moved here. I did check with several museums around to see if they wanted to take it for their collection. The response every time was, "We don't need nor want another one of those d@mn things, we have at least a dozen sitting in our storage areas taking up space." They weren't great pianos to begin with, so I had no remorse tearing it apart and making it into a workbench. The church would have had to pay to have it hauled away to the dump, so they were happy as well. You should have seen us getting it down from the second floor of the Sunday School area at the church.... Took about 6 of us to manhandle it down the stairs! I removed the harp before taking it down the cellar stairs when we got it to our house. Thank God! Three of us couldn't hold it as it slid down the steps. My oldest son was at the bottom, and my youngest and I were at the top. It took off on us and almost over ran my son on the bottom. We got it stopped and my 2 sons were able to keep it from going the rest of the way down while I ran around the house in the front door, back through the house, took the cellar stairs 2 at a time and ran to where my oldest was starting to lose the battle. I leaned into it at the bottom for a while while my son recovered and found a 2x4 to brace it in place...... An hour later we managed to finish bringing it the rest of the way down. Even without the harp it has to weigh about 400 lbs. Getting it jacked up to put the legs back on was another "interesting" experience..................
Speaking of son #1, he just called to invite me over for a turkey dinner tonight. Yum!
Todd, you described the Middle School/Jr. High dance to a tee!!! DJ'd for ours here for about a decade or so. When I was teaching they were at least respectful to me (they knew better....) after a couple years of retirement... Well most were still respectful to me as they remembered me from the last few years I taught part of the time in Elementary, but they had gotten very nasty to my help (usually a high school kid). I finally had a "disco" light fail and figured it was time to make life easier on myself and gave up the teeny bopper stuff. Of course almost immediately I got a call from the high school asking if I would be willing to do their dances......... i decided to stay retied from doing school dances.
Best go feed the kitties. They will be happy as it is a half hour early for them (they can't tell time yet...).
Later!

Ok, a bit of researce has yielded "Square Grand". And, after reading about it.........I resind my comment and have decided you have given it's next best use. (they suggest a coffin with strong pallbearers)
EDIT: Figure how THAT happened.
Good Morning!! I’ll have the brunch Boo-fay please. Coffee too thanks.
I made it. Survived a bunch of future convicts. Actually it wasn’t too bad, but it weren’t like no dance I ever been too. They stood around in groups. Three to four groups. Like schools of fish. In the semi-dark…..texting. Probably someone in the next pod. Ever notice the scum on a pond? How it moves around? Slowly? Look at it once it's set somewhere, then next thing you notice....it's moved? "Well that’s kinda like these groups. They’d shift around. One time theyd be three groups then they’d be four, next thing you know there’s one and a little bit of an offshoot getting ready to divide. Like an amoeba or some contagious bacteria. Then, three or four again. Occasionally, the DJ would play a song they apparently liked and the crowd would take on a different tone. The would break into about 37 seconds of what might be considered dancing, (some of them little Junior High school girls are heading for a successful future as a stripper. Thank goodness there was no pole in the place. Unreal.)then, there would be a few that would stop and laugh, the rest would follow suit and then back to texting and talking. They each paid $5 for 3 ½ hours of this.
Rob- Had to laugh. Your comment on the container yard Barry showed was exactly what I thought. A box of models.
Ken- I’m sure glad the job is working out for you. I hope that the Bank of Your Ire Will work with you in light of your financial changes.
Lee- I am surprised, with all the digital photos and graphics and everything people are doing now with a home computer, that white ink printing machines aren’t more readily available at affordable prices. Sure would be handy.
OK, news from Toddland*. I want to take a picture of my bridge. So far there is no reason why this cannot happen. That is….yet. I have no plans today other than maybe, maaaaaybe go out to eat. I may get to use last nights Prime Rib dinner, (very good by the way. Cold, but good) as our weekly dine out trip if I‘m lucky. So, I should be spending a bit of time in Toddland* today.
I do need two abutments, I am undecided as to the style. Thinking just concrete for which I could probably just use a 1X4 chunk with a thin coat of plaster for texture and to cover the rough end. Or, I could get one of stone because it would be old. Or, I could use a mixture of both as a updated or replaced one. Decisions. I will however, need four more bridge feet and another couple pieces of I-beam to build two more supports I’ve decided to make. It will add stability and, the short sections will/would need support on that end other than just attached to the middle section. Besides, I'd like a little more sturdyness anyway. Or, I could experiment with center piers to see if they will work without a train clipping the thing. That wouldn’t be a good thing.
Does anyone else have an issue with, while working in this post window, the text constantly flipping the to the top of the post you're trying to work with? I do, and it's annoying as all get out.
Anyway, If I end up out and about, I may have to stop at the LHS to get some bridge feet and some styrene I-beam stock. Who knows. I've got plenty to do and the bridge isn't holding everything up.
Well, fooled around here long enough. Must get a foolin somewhere else.
Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Good Morning All!
Not much to report from the land of Buckeyes on this cloudy Sunday other then I will be going to the HO club this afternoon-first time in 3 weeks due to the snow accumulation which cause lack of parking spaces at the fair ground..Yesterday while out and about I saw a NS Eastbound empty hopper train pulled by 2 D9-40CWs..Its suppose to be in the 50s starting Tuesday and I plan on going trackside.
I shall have a cup and look over the forum.

So far the time change has not bothered me, but I go in at 11:00 today, Monday maybe a different story with going in at at 9:30.
Better get ready for work, see you this evening!
Mornin'!
Coffee. Zoe, Dark roast coffee! Oh, I might as well have the #2 special this morning, over easy on the eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sour dough toast. Thank You Ma'am.
Why am I up at this early hour? Actually I did get the clocks changed last night and managed to split the difference sleep wise..... Got up either a half hour later than normal or earlier than normal depending in which time you choose.
Currently 35°F with wet, under cloudy skies at the moment. Calling for snow all day with no significant accumulations.... Whatever THAT means.
I have to stop over at the Do It Best Value store in town on my rounds (Still feeding my sister's cats in Canandaigua) to pick up some peg board hooks and a storage organizer thingy with drawers for stuff and then actually clean the workbench!
Hope you all have a good day!

Rob, thanks. There are a few rusted out vehicles on the layout. Just a few feet back there is a rusted out 1930’s Ford pick-up.
Gas $3.55 Diesel $4.05 I’m glad I spent the extra money on a high performance fuel filter for my truck, my fuel costs remain the same even though the cost of fuel went up, the new filter improved my MPG by 6.
Crossing flashers; Quickar Electronics is selling the electronics for a cross buck at $9 each. That’s a savings of $30 if you like the NJ version. Each unit will operate 8 LED. 5-12v at 40ma. I’m using 300ma RS power supply to run my switch machines and flashers….
Jeff, I received more decal paper, this time I went back to my original supplier so the edges won’t curl up. The white undercoat is still elusive to me as the last update to Windows XP and the ALPS printer driver are fighting with each other. I have an old machine in the closet I might break out, load it with Win 2000 or Win 98 and use that to do the printing with. It would be nice if someone came out with another printer that uses white ink or that lays an opaque ink so you don’t have to mess with it. Anyway if you need more of those Midland Gulf I still have the artwork. Let me know what size.
AAARRRAAAGGHH!!! Back to shoveling more stuff from the driveway...the plows just came by....again...3X now.....
