Happy Twelfth Night everyone!  All our decorations came down today for another year. All in all we had a quiet and blessed Christmas and New Year's.

Garry:

I've seen that loco picture before. I'm not sure where it was. India. perhaps?
It doesn't bear too close an inspection -

I think it's from the island of Fo Ptoshoppe. Too little damage to that window, too clean a cut through the balcony, and no debris on the ground - like the balcony fragments just vaporized! Geeked

Ulrich: That does indeed sound a bit more hopeful regarding the TV station.Thumbs UpAngel I thought you had a layout already planned! Is it that the Kato steamer has seduced you with its detail?  I took the liberty of switching on another light in your room, and yes, the detail is indeed impressive!

Galaxy: I've put the 17th. into my reminder calendar Angel

HAve starving bloodwork this AM at 10:15, ad can't wait.
Our blood test times are on a 1st. come, 1st. served basis, so I always try to get in early, earlier than I usually have breakfast - that fasting requirement I think is plain stupid for diabetic patients.SoapBoxMy 2 Cents

Rob: Thanks, check your PMs again - there's news. Hope the cold can be chased off PDQ.Angel

Barry:

...but that is only the Arkansas ones...others?.....
...maybe, but what about the fish? http://ca.news.yahoo.com/mass-bird-fish-deaths-stoke-curiosity-20110106-095058-357.html As to the pole shift, would that be geographic, or merely magnetic? Clown

Joe: Interesting setoff photos - thanks for posting them. The slope on the roadbed here http://cjvrr.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2319095   (can't get the photo to paste in here, or into Photobucket!) gives me hope that some of my ballasting isn't too non-prototypical! Laugh

Todd: That was scary about your daughter - glad things were brought under control. Not what you need this, or any other week. Angel for you all Friday.

Ken: Things have just got to get better than this, I agree with Ulrich! EDIT Terrific news! Yeah

Tony: Inquiring minds need (aka would like) to know about your mrr plans?, layout? Scale? era? And so on.....

Fergie:  Congratulations on the Command Captain I heard that you were ashore for a spell. Let's hope you get her back. Folks, here's The CCG Mathew

Der John: I made it to the Hobby Show back in November but as it was commented by several George was not present and the show seems to get smaller every year.
...I think that George's  ongoing involvement may be very limited - you can guess the causes....and yes, I found the show pretty disappointing too.

tsf:   About those grain of wheats - how many do you need? I've a bunch I could probably spare - PM me if you are interested.

Time again for bed.  Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity (with thanks for Ken's job) and Peace.Angel

DerJohn, there's a trick with posting those pictures from RRPA.

You have to right click the photo, go to properties, and you will find a URL in there that you can use with tags (the URL will always end in a .jpg)

Voila!

EDIT: for some reason I can't get this to work. I have the BBcode typed correctly, but the second [/img] tag isn't working...

EDIT 2: got it

Evenin' folks!

Flo just a decaf for the moment.  I'll be sitting in the back booth for a while soaking up the warmth from the stove.

Been a busy day.  Didn't get nearly as much done as I had hoped, and tomorrow i have to watch the Granddaughters for an hour or so while my son is at the Dentist.  He will be bringing them over here so i can hopefully still get a little putting away done while they are here.  Olivia, I'm sure would be a great helper, but Emily, the terror will be tearing everything down as we do......  She is a sweetie, but busy, busy, busy!

Started to thaw the Turkey I am cooking on Saturday.  Still don't know exactly how many are coming for dinner.  I'm hoping my son has a number for me tomorrow.

I got about half my Christmas Decorations down today.  I will start with the rest tomorrow morning.

Ulrich, I sure hope everything works out with the bank for financing the TV stuff.  It sure would be great for you to be finally employed again!  You are in my prayers.  Nice Loco, BTW!

Hope everyone has a great night!

Fruit smoothie, please.
? for you Car Guys: My wife bought a new battery for her 2000 Camry. It has 525 CCA. The dead one she has in there reads 550. From what I find online, looks like standard equipment calls for a battery with 582. Should she return it or will that 525 suffice? Our local NAPA fella (nice little old fella) looked in up before selling it to her. If it is OK, I'll just go ahead and put it in, but thought I'd ask the car guys in here first. Thanks!

Rob I would say that a battery with 525CCA's would be barely adequate for the vehicle.  From what our computers say at work (I actually sold a battery for a 2000 Camry today...go figure) the minimum CCA rating for the vehicle is 550CCA's, but 582CA's (CCA's of course being Cold Cranking Amps, the total # of amps the battery is capable of producing at 0-degrees, as compared to CA's, or Cranking Amps, which is the same amp rating, but at 32-degrees).  You could dump the battery you got into the vehicle and it would probably crank it reliably for a little while, but in the long run you'd shorten the battery's life and end up going back to get another before you'd really "need" to.

Barry sounds like Spring is acting like Heather was tonight, just hyped up.....big time.

Hi Rob,

Here I sit up tonight with Stomach cramps. Thank goodness this doesn't happen very often.

But about the car battery.   FYI..

I know in your clime you can get away with less C.C.A.s  But up here we need in the 700 to 850 CCA to be of any use at all.

You can purcase batteries all the way up to 1000 CCA.s They do a wonderful job in cold weather but the draw back to them is that their life expectancy is less.

As you can tell there is a standard size for each model of vehicle and the way they increase the CCA.s is by putting in more plates of lead into each cell, of which there are usually three.  But to get more plates in they have to make the plates thinner and therefore more fragile. After some use it has been proven by those who have used them that the plates will crack/break and a piece of one will fall against it's neighboring plate and completely short out the battery. Rendering it usless.  The 850 CCAs are for full sized cars and pick-ups and seem to give great service with a life expectancy of five (5) plus years. Your car being somewhat smaller, I would try to get a battery in the 580 to 700 CCAs area, and that would give you great service for your climate and long life to boot.

 Morning All

 Flo, some Coffee please.

Wife bought me some over the counter medication for acid reflux yesterday and it sure helped! I was able to sleep last night laying down all night, first time in a while.

Still had a hard time sleeping last night, with the starting the new job and worrying about rather I can keep the house or not.

Galaxy Sorry I have got on your nerves with me posting about what has gone wrong in my life the last few months. Hopefully I will start having some smooth sailing now and won't have anything to complain about. Far as Charter, when it works I am fine with them. But last 3 months they have been out 2 to 3 times a month every month. I have all so had internet problems, abut 5 day or so I could not get on line. Far as changing company's if they don't get things straight and I have the funds I may change.

Ulrich Found a diagram of the folding up bench idea. While not very detailed it still will give you something to think about.

 See you all later.

Good Morning All,

24F and snoowing a bit this morning. We may get as much as 6" over the next day or so. Fun drive in this morning not because of the snow but because someone decided since it was snowing that they didn't need to stop for red lights and nearly T-boned me. But I said nearly so after regaining my composure and saluting I went on my way. Don't need any offee this morning Zoe, how abouta nice glass of orange juice?

Rob - I would exchange the battery for the greater CCA version. Yes the one sold to you will w..k, but Bama is spot  on thinking it won't last as long. Fact is you may not need the extra cranking power in more moderate winters, but they also perform better in hot weather so it's worth it. Generally also the guarantee for said battery increases with the cost and CCA rating so you do get something back for the extra moolah.

Ulrich - THAT's some good news for you finally. With things easing up a bit world wide your plan should have a better chance of getting approved. Here there seems to be no shortage on funding for the same people who created this mess to buy big blocks of who knows what from each other. Don't have hordes of bankers knocking on my door to offer to help me buy my shop building yet, but who knows?

TSF - check out on sale leftover "ice" Christmas lights. With a bit of revamping they offer tons of lights low watts and enough bullbs on a single string to equip a town. Jeff probably can offer more input when he wanders in.

Robby - that's very cool indeed. Soon we can all say we knew you when.......

Back into the shop I go. Today we're making a blower drive for the 1923 Amilcar. The whole assembly isn't much bigger than the old emissions air pumps, but the motor is only 948cc so it's all reletive.    CUL, J.R.

Good Morning! Coffee and waffles please. Yup, real maple syrup. Thanks. (just got the word coffee to come out with both "e's" and now J.R.'s having issues with th "c"Wink )

Thanks for all the well wishes for the daughter. She is doing very well, was at the visitation last night. Her ordeal has left her with no worse for wear than say if she were cut on the arm or leg and required a few stitches. The doctor opted not to give her any blood but to wait and see. She’s a bit weakish she says. but getting better. She did loose quite a bit of blood I guess.

Ken- Great news on the job!

Fergie- Welcome back. Sorry you got….landed. Or whatever they call that in the maritime world. Looking forward to pictures. I assume you are working in the area you live now and can spend time on the layout?

Ulrich- Praying or you that all goes well at the meeting. Over here in the States, that picture has been around for quite some time, T-shirts and all. I don’t find it offensive, sorta like having a picture of George Washington with the caption, “The United States ’s first President”. But I don’t necessarily find it… funny per se. More of a …”think about it” type thing. Though I assume the originators had humor in mind and many who purchased did also. I guess it’s in what context you view it.

Charlie-  Laugh No offense taken. Can’t be offended by facts!!! Laugh

(ahem)Hmm I do seem to waste a lot of good opportunities to work on the layout

DerJohn and Garry- That picture is real. I’ve seen it before on this forum I believe. It is a display at some museum I think, commemorating an actual happening …in…..France? I believe? Somewhere though that happened and the picture you show is a museum display or a commemoration.

Rob- I’m standing with the guys saying get a bigger battery. Due to the increase in electrical components a cars requirements for amperage is increasing. An like J.R. said, heat zaps a battery just as much as cold. Never go below what the manufacturer recommends. The way I look at it, they want to make that car as cheap as possible, yet last through the warranty. If they could get by with a cheaper battery, they would.

Change landline phone companies? HAH!! I wish I could. Around here we have two choices. Frontier, (formerly Verizon, formerly GTE), or camp fire and a blanket. Try and negotiate with a monopoly. With Mom gone and the potential for her moving in and needing Lifeline, I’m seeing the need for the landline fade into the horizon. $70 a month to use the phone for, I think 15 minutes the bill said, last month. I pay half that for cell service and I have free long distance wherever I may be.

Well, Visitation went well last night. More people showed than I thought as most people Mom knew have already passed and the family we know is older and in Pike county or in Tejas. Too far to travel. Many didn’t feel that way I guess. My sister didn’t show, however they did finally return the calls we’ve been making all week. 2 hrs before the visitation was to start. BIL claimed they just got the messages. (I say “male Bovine excrement” but who knows) Sister was in the background bellering like a stuck Water Buffalo. Maybe it was real, could be. If it was I think it was guilt driven as much as grief. She’s pulled that stunt of ignoring and not returning calls for the last and most important time. BIL said they’d call before the visitation to let us know what they’ll be doing. Did they? No. Nothing unusual. Except this time they aren't keeping Mom's hopes up they'll show, only to be dissappointed again. Don’t know if they’ll show today. I hope they do for Mom’s sake, I personally don’t care. Oh He did say that we could call him if we needed anything. I thought that was just down right plain real nice of him.

Yes Ray, we do need a sarcasm icon.

Wow look how long this is. I best shut up. So…..

Today is the Funeral. I have decided that I want to help Mom move just one more time and will be a Pall Bearer. At least from the Hearse to the site. Like I have for some time now, I just want to help her get there safely.

I love the name “M.E.S.S.” Yes

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Todd - hope it all goes well today. My only advice is the animosities that can surface at a funeral can start lifelong feuds. Best to put on a pleasent face and get through it all then think about it later. And if you had to drink what I brew you'd call it offee tooEmbarrassed.  J.R.

J.R. - Just kiddin about the spelling.  As for my sister, this did not surprise me as much as you would think. If she shows, and I think she may, (haven't talked to her) there will be no ill words from me today regardless. Later, who knows. THat will be solely based on what she says sometime in the future. My hands have been washed many moons ago. I am polite to her and that is about it. I do not argue. Not my cup of tea so to speak. Love her? Yes I do. Deal with her? As little as possible. I'm a bit over the halfway point, she needs to meet me there.

I just wanted to say to the newer guys who may have taken what I said to J.R. earlier differently than was meant, I would never ridicule anyone for spelling or typing errors. And we won't even think about mentioning grammer errors Whistling. It'd be like the pot calling the kettle black. Wink Laugh Some people can't help it, others are just in a hurry or don't notice. Just not my bag man. The "older patrons", like J.R., know this. Some newer may not. Just want to clarify.

Good Afternoon,

the meeting with the bank people went quite well, though no decision has been made. At least they signaled their interest in the project, enabling us to do the next step - filling out those dreaded questionnaires and forms you need when applying for a credit Whistling Some minor touch up work to the business plan needs to be done as well, but that´s a no-brainer for me.

Well, I DID it - I ordered that loco directly in Japan. I have no confirmation yet, just that they have received my order. It´ll mean money taken from my rainy day fund, but at 80 Euros I think I can cope with it. It gives me the chance to get back "on track", even if it is a loop with some spurs and a siding - fitting on part of my desk. It is also a test whether I can cope with N scale ...

Todd - the prayer candle remains lit!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have a breakfast bagel w/ cheese and a pot of dark roast coffee to get me going this morning!

Just popping in to say howdy as i have a weeks worth of cleaning to get done today, plus an hour or so will be spent with the Granddaughters here helping me mess it up as I go....  (sorry Fergie for the © infringement...)

Ulrich, glad you ordered the loco!  You will enjoy it.

Rob, my guess is THAT the battery they gave you should work just fine and probably outlive the car.....

Best be moving!

Good Morning All!

Not much to report from the land of Buckeyes on this cold morning other then it snowed again yesterday. It seems odd to have a open area for Slate Creek and having to wait to start construction till all track is on hand-Of course if I wasn't so dang bullheaded about not using Unitrack I have all the needed switches and most of the track.I also have all of the structures and the needed lumber stack neatly on the floor.

I shall have a cup and look over the forum.

Have a good'un!

Galaxy congratulations on the procurement of a Mikado!

teen steam fan

Galaxy-Hope the Mike runs good.

Oh thank you and yes she does, she does! She may not be a perfect B&O model, but she will be relettered for such. I have only test run on the oval under the xmas tree layout so I don't know yet how the pilot wil lhandle switches..she looks a little light weighted there. {first I ahve to re-find and clean teh layout}  I Am Surprised Bachmann Spectrum would produce an SY Mikado taht could be soldat a buck and a quarter- under the $300-$400 range otehr mikes-including Bachmann's own sound DCC version ahve gone for.

My wife bought a new battery for her 2000 Camry. It has 525 CCA. The dead one she has in there reads 550. From what I find online, looks like standard equipment calls for a battery with 582. Should she return it or will that 525 suffice?

As others have said, i would go for the max rated CCA batery the car should have, even in temperate climates. The usual reason they want to sell you a lower CCA battery is they don't have teh proper one in stock, so they tell you a "lesser will do" ....and don't always "do" when you count on it.

2nd thing is- Yeah, the CHARTER SUCKS thing...that is getting overbearing. so drop their phone service and get a regualar land line again THAT WORKS-even during cable or power outages {unless someone hit a pole} and quit griping. I COULD have the cable phone option, I COULD drop the land line as I have a Cell phone {for ememrgencies ONLY- only 5 hours of service a year} BUT I STILL have my landline and WON't do without it. someone can {almost} ALWAYS get ahold of me then! I lived through a Hurricane once ans had limited landline service while power was out {until phome companies batteries backup began to dwindle a week later}/ SO I own;t do without basic regular landline. WHen My cable TV or CAble internet goes out I call and get a credit for the outage- now maybe Time WArner Cable is different...but we got it now... CHARTER SUCKS CABOOSE, MOOSE MEAT AND GUNPOWDER! Oh, BTW if your wife get s Medicaid with her SSI. you shoudl get a "life line" regualr discounted cheap land line, desinged to get those in medical need in touch with whom they need to in emergency. My landline costs me about $24 a month basic service and long distance is free to use, but you pay by the minute for using it}.

Coffee refill, please.

Went ahead and swapped batteries. The new one has the higher amps and fits the tray perfectly. Couldn't find my bat cleaner, so used a wire brush for shotgun barrels. NAPA fella says the difference is between those made in Canada & the USA.(?) And even though the battery stickers read identical, he said in the book it shows one bat with higher amps. Drove it around the 4 mile loop. Car has been sitting for at least a few months now. With gas prices inching up, time to start utilizing it's better gas mileage.

Hope to have the energy to do some work on the wife's layout tonight. Lots & lots of little stuff to do.

Cheers! Rob

Went by the bank to make a deposit then to the New Llano post office to mail off an EZ-Command system I finally got sold off. I still have one EZ-Command system left. I'm holding on to it as a backup DCC system in the event my Zephyr ever fails. Also went to Wal-Mart to get so additional groceries then back home. Other than my day has been quite uneventful.

Now I have to let my eyes rest for a while. They are a mite sensitive to light and I've been out driving in the bright sunshine, so to say tyhey ache a bit is somewhat of an understatement.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening, pot of coffee please...thanks.

It's time for "Adventures with the Post Office."

I ordered a bunch of Herald King decals from Northern Central Supply...a great source and fantastic dealer. They arrived today, well-packed, in an envelope with the standard USPS "insured" sticker on it. But, there was something else stuck on it as well: a post-it note from our local Postal N***. It said "Incorrect procedure for insured mail but delivery was made. Postmaster."

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot???

So, I e-mail Mike Caum at Northern about this. He says they aren't insuring a letter, but the contents. His PO was contacted by the N***. His PO and the N*** went around and around on the issue before "Postman Pat" (the local N***) hung up on them! Mike says he's mailed-out decals this way for years, and my local busy-body bureaucrat was the FIRST to ever squawk about it.

USPS, gotta love 'em...Whistling

Here's hoping everybody had a good day...and an even better evening.

Who's in charge of the post office there? Mr Tu-Tight-Ina-Crotch? I have never had that problem.

Laugh

Unless they've hired another micro-managing busy body, THAT would be: Miss, Mrs., or Ms. Tu-Tight-Ina-Crotch... We know her as "Postman Pat." But the charming little Postman on TV is far friendlier...and she is far more manly!
