Good Morning! Coffee please, with a stack of buttermilk flapjacks, and sausage patties with real maple syrup, not that California healthy who knows what it is stuff. I’ll take my chanceswith the real stuff. Thank you.

John- On this tax thing for Illinoyz. I know we had one of the lower state taxes and will continue to not be the highest. And that normal increases in spending due to rising costs etc etc will lead to the need for increased income. Usually that works with increased taxes paid due to increase in salary and new job entries, but we have had just the opposite lately. So at the risk of more holes in the roads and layoffs ( I do not want anyone to lose their job of course) we need more money and this is the only way to do it. What burns my …..Hmmboots, is knowing that a significant amount of debt is/was irresponsible spending and that is being polite. But, what is done is done and now must be undone and there is only one way to do it that doesn’t cost jobs or needed services. Cause you notice they don't cut the unnecessary spending items, just the needed stuff. "state worker furlows coming" or " snow plows may not run on interstates" or Illinoy public aide checks held up" never, " funding for the governors ball will be less" or " $6 million in funds to see if Chicago is a real Native American name will not be dispersed. So far they say a temporary increase, but what usually happens with any form of government, it starts out temporary and then waits for people to get used to it and then they extend or make permanent. Just wanted you to know I’m not reeeeeal upset about 2%. But it does lend credence to my argument about the use of percentages in arguments or decisions. They can be used accurately to create any appearance you choose. As you said a 66% increase by the news media reports actually works out to a 2% (rounded) additional tax. Or, 2 cents on the dollar. Depending on which side you’re on and how you want it to sound.

Lee- Somehow, I’m sure, there has GOT to be a way we can get a government grant to build our MRR’s at home. Gotta be. Confused

George- Sorry about the teardown, but congrats on the start over! A posting of some progress pics would be very well received.

(siiiigh) internet is running slower than Molasses in January. I guess it wasn’t all the reboots and cookies and temp files, (which I have set to dump upon closing IE anyway, except favorites) after all. Must be heavy traffic on the cable network. Sometimes that does happen. Of course I hate to call because they no longer offer the speed I’m on as an option. (slowest of the three) They are going faster yet so I’m afraid a call will cost me an “upgrade“ so to speak. Which.....could be the problem too.

Hopefully some layout work today. As far as I can see, it’s a go Houston.Yes

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Good Morning All!

Not much to report from the land of frozen Buckeyes other then yesterday I spent a enjoyable afternoon working on my C&HV 150 (a SW500) I touched up the paint, replace a missing mu hose cluster, clean the shell, contact strip, wheels, commutator, and oil 'round..I now have a extreme case of HO itis which is a good thing because I been neglecting some cleaning projects...I said it before and will say once again after working with N Scale HO seems as big as O Scale...Laugh
I still have #100(a SW1000) to clean.

I shall have a cup and look over the forum.

Have a good'un! Thumbs Up

Good morning, everyone.

George in Utah ... Great to see you in the diner. You have your work cut out for you with starting over. PC will always mean Penn Central to me instead of something else.

Todd.... The IL tax hike made national news.Feel free to locate in the Blue Grass State. I'm only about 65 miles from IL. Don't forget Abe was born in KY.

Galaxy ... Prayers continue for surgery. Have faith it will go fine and solve your back pain problem.

The Chapel Car has been dispatched to the diner for those in need. Galaxy's surgery of course is a concern. Also, Todd lost he Mom recently. There are others with health concerns and who have lost family members and freinds.

Good morning all.

Just thought I'd stop in for some biscuits and gravy and to announce that my Port Able and Pacific is now history. ...I figured I needed a new start and a new focus.

It is always sad to see a former layout go, but more exciting to start a new one! Good luck with your new adventure!

Good morning all.

Just thought I'd stop in for some biscuits and gravy and to announce that my Port Able and Pacific is now history. It was fun while  it lasted, but it is time to move on. Everything from the benchwork up is gone!

I figured I needed a new start and a new focus. I found it in the PRR's Trenton Cut-off. This was a freight only by-pass which ran from Morrisville PA to Thorndale PA - avoiding the congestion and grades in and around Philly. I am extremely familiar with that area as I grew up there. I spent many an hour at Whitford station, where the Trenton Cut-off crosses over the 4 track Philadelphia - Harrisburg main on a magnificent truss bridge, just watching trains with my friends.

My time frame will be August 1973, which puts me in the Penn Central era. Not everybody likes the Penn Central, but, although I love the Pennsy, I remember the Penn Central. It was The Railroad when I was growing up. Plus, one of the reasons I chose the Trenton Cut-off was so that I could run heavy electric freight ops. PRR electrics are hard to come by and expensive when they can be found. By moving into the PC era, I can logically run E33s. Bachmann makes a very nice E33. I have 2 and plan to get more!

So, I guess I've got my work cut out for me. I have the plan all drawn up. It was hard to get 30 inch radius curves to fit in my smallish basement, but I did it (the  aisles are on the narrow side though), and I've even started construction of the Morrisville flying junction as a test scene to see if what I've drawn on paper will work on plywood and plaster!

I'm going to try to find a few more pix of my prairie towns to glean some more information about street layouts and RR crossings at odd angles..there seems to have been a few thereabouts...

Flo, I'll have a coffee and a breakfast bagel please...I'll be at the RC for a bit....

Good morning all,

The high today will be a blistering 17F or -8.333C

John, just remember never to use acetone on rubber.  It will crack and fall off.

Ken, there is a lot of competition now in the hobby for the best locomotive.  BLI, Proto 2000, and believe it or not Bachmann have really stepped up their game.  I bought a BLI 4-4-4-4 ($99) 2 years ago and it pulls 50+ 40FT box cars, the Bachmann Berkshires do a good job pulling the same number of cars around the layout.  You really have to watch the sales; last fall I bought a Proto 2000 F3 A-B (both powered) set for $125 with sound and DCC.  It was funny at the time the powered B was $5 cheaper than the unpowered B.  Now that Standard Hobby is out of business it’s hard to find those deals.

Yesterday I went to radio Shack and picked up some more DPDT switches for the tortoise machines.  Replaced a bad turnout on #3 main, and found I had to install an expansion joint in the #2 main.  The bad turnout can be repaired on the bench, but not on the layout.  Today I will finish the tortoise project and hopefully install the one block detector.

I learned something interesting: The local non-profit model railroad museum has 3 part time employees, paid for by the federal government.  How does that work?

Gooooood Morning!

Again, seven hours of sleep without any interruption! Never thought I´d be so happy about a thing like this!

Zoe, coffee, bacon & eggs, sausages, buttered toast and a glass of OJ, please!

A gray day in northern Germany - nothing much planned for the day, maybe a little reading, a plain old book, with words printed on paper...

Have a good time!

Jeff: Close call with the Shellac can!  Glad it had a happy ending -that the Shellac itself was still OK after that time is a bonus!

Oh, and the result for the visit to the docs office? My prostate health is much better than it was a year ago.

...I've been taking Saw Palmeto extract and a small cocktail of other defensive supplements for years now - so far, good results.  My Dr. now says, however that with men over 70 the growth of any Prostate cancer is generally so slow that it isn't an issue - that doesn't stop me taking the supplements! http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/Gifs/icon_rolleyes.gif

The label on the can of shellac says it's clear but it's now amber. Still works as a sealer on the plaster though. Now the plaster looks like yellow snow! Doesn't matter as it will eventually be covered with paint. As for the saw palmetto, that's what my father takes even though he's seen the better side of 75. I've found that mustard also contains something that helps fight against prostate cancer and that's good for me as I love mustard. Especially the spicy brown mustard. The hotter it is the better I like it.

Robby P.

Jeff........I was shopping at Wal-Mart and thought you would like this.  They have a DVD "The Great Indian Wars" for $2.50.  I bought a copy.  Its looks pretty good.

I'll have to keep an eye out for it. Who knows? I might spot one of my ancestors.Laugh

Been a busy day for me. Went to town to get gas for the van then to Walgreen's to get a new clip-on sunglasses attachment for my glasses. From there to Autozone to get a couple of parts for the van. One was a new turn signal flasher. The old one still worked but would start out flashing slow and would speed up the longer it was on and the flasher unit would get really hot. It was likely too small as it was one of those little plastic import jobs. It would get so hot sometimes that it would pop the plastic body off. I decided I better replace it before it started a fire. Went to Lowe's and picked up half a dozen of those little green chemical light sticks and a small sanding blocks. I put the light sticks in my vans tool box. Never can tell when they'll come in handy. Also looked for an engine size emblem. Couldn't find one for 318 or 5.2 but I did find one for 5.3. That works out to something like 323 cubic inches. I grabbed it. I wanted two of them but the one was all they had. Later I'll go back and see if they have any more. That accounted for the morning. When I got home my father picked me up to go with him to the Toro Boat Service out by Toledo Bend lake to pick up his boat. The lights on it have all been replaced, the electrical system has been replaced, a new control station installed, new throttle cables and a new steering system put in and it now sports a newly rebuilt 90 hp Evinrude V4 motor. It had originally come with a 75 hp Evinrude motor. The greater engine weight had made the boats center of gravity on the trailer right over the axle. In fact it's balanced so precisely that I can push the tongue of the trailer up and down with two fingers of one hand. We put three 80 pound concrete blocks on the tongue to keep it down. Those three blocks together weigh as much as I do so I don't think it's going anywhere. But I tell you what, the brakes on his truck were letting him know there was something pretty darn heavy back there. It was just after 5 pm when we got back so it was time for me to get ready to go out to dinner with my sister and niece. It's not every day I get to ride in a six speed Honda Accord Si Sport with a true lead foot. That pretty much accounts for my day. No work on the layout today. Seems like almost every time I plan to get some work done other people want me to help them with their stuff. When do I get some time?

 Evening folks!

Flo, Beer for everyone over 18, tap is on me.

Galaxy and Work Front. Thanks for the kind wish and we had a pretty darn good day concerning how it started out. We did not have a soul till 12:00, Chad sold 2 twin mattress and then I sold a twin box spring. While I was doing the ticket I looked up and the show room was full! Surprise This can be a bad thing, harder to find the right mattress (build value) for a customer when you are juggling 2 and 3 people at the same time. 5 customers left to shop around and we where disappointed. But 3 came back and bought so the day ended up pretty good. One went to Mattress Giant (my former store) and Mel (former Co Worker) bad mouth us. Said the mattress had to be used for the prices we had and the Buyer Must Be Ware! Nope, they are new sealed in there factory bag.

Vincent Aw, your story about the bushings brings back my days for the quest for speed. In other words trying to stick a square peg in a round hole! Big Smile Been there and done that more times than I care to remember. Worst one was sticking a Ford 427 Medium Riser in my 68 Cobra Mustang. Took something like two weeks to figure that puzzle out.

Far as my BLI diesel fleet hum have to think for a minute. I have had 4 of them, 3 Blue Line GE AC 6000's and one RSD 15. First 6000 cooked after say 2 hours. Sent it back to Ulrich Model Trains great company to deal with I will add. Steve could not fix the problem and sent me a replacement. At this point I had added another one to my fleet, a CSX. CSX LED went bad, BLI sent me a front LED for free so great. But it was a pain in the caboose to take a part and then they sent me the wrong LED to boot. Sent it back for repairs at no cost.

Next the UP 6000 stopped getting power from the front trucks. If it was not the 6000 it would be easy to fix. But after fighting with the CSX I sold it at Yahoo Yard Sale to someone that was wanting to kit bash a UP 6000. Now the CSX seemed to have sucked up a track spike into the speaker again. Can not fish it out so I am going to have to open it up. In fact now that I am thinking of it, this will be the third time I had to get a rail spike out of a 6000.

RSD 15, sweet engine and does not have the downward facing speakers like a 6000. Sound great and a lighter puller than the 6000's. It will pull around 30 cars where the 6000's will drag 40 +.

If the 6000's where easy to take apart and did not suck spikes I would rate them as very good. RSD 15 I would rate as 9 out of 10 if pulling power is not the main issue for you. Motor, gearing and drive shafts are top notch and have had no failures so far.

My favorite manufacturer is Proto so far, but BLI Blue Line is still darn good and will buy more later when I have a budget for trains.

My the way my run time is down to around 4 to 5 hours a week now.

            See You All Sunday!

Good evening Diners: Haven't been in for a while, but have been looking in the window some.  Completed the surgery on the LL GP 38-2 light board, checked that all the traces that had to be cut were in fact cut.  Proceeded with the install of the TCS M4 decoder following the very clear instructions at http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=105512&highlight=decoder+install  Checked for continuity where required, and lack thereof where not. Everything was  aok. (found incidentally that cleaning the loco frame with acetone before trying to put Scotch tape on it for insulation does a wonderful job.) Re-assembled the loco mechanism. Checked again for lack of continuity where needed.  All quiet from the meter. Placed loco on test rack, turned on DCC power.  Nothing - no lights, no movement on Address 3. (Then again, no smoke either, which is some kind of a plus, I suppose Whistling) Was it the test rack? No, it's got power. Was it something in the frame and drive? No - I disassembled and tried the decoder/lightboard/motor on their own out of the loco powered from the test track by alligator leads. Still nothing.  I like the way TCS decoders work, when they work - but I have had trouble with installing them on a pretty consistent basis.  I think I'll take a bunch of photos and send their tech guys an email. I really don't understand where I've gone wrong with this one - I've done everything by the book.

Galaxy: [quote] Speaking of my back, my surgery is next Monday the 17th so those with prayer chains or lists, please put me on it.[quote]..Roger that. Angel..and I've had a couple of positive responses to this as well.

I don't mind junk mail getting amngled, but CC statements and Paychecks...important stuff like that should come through clean as a whistle.
...I'm still waitng for the statement for a CC that would have been generated Dec. 26th. Always the 26th. Of the month. Usually it's here by the 4th. or 5th.  I phoned the other day and found out the balance as of Dec 26th and paid that by Phone Banking - so now at least there won't be interest charges. The CC Company phone person said it wasn't due until the 19th, which is an unusually long time. In normal times it would be the 14th or 15th.  I'm also waiting for a package from iHerb. Normally it should have arrived a week or so ago. There is a tracking number, but it's meaningless as it stops working at the border!Blindfold

Todd: I'm sure there's a nice government job just waiting for that insurance agent's phone person! Whistling

Good news. The State of Illinoyz is raising personal income taxes by 66%. Finally they are doing something to offset their irresponsible spending.

(The above statement is filled with more sarcasm than you have ever experienced in your lives)

...just to soften the blow a bit, I saw a similar figure explained the other day - a tax rate of 3% being increased to 5% is a 66% increase (give or take that recurring decimal! ) So, I guess it depends on your starting rate before the increase.  That's where the strength, or softness, of the blow comes in.  I wouldn't like to see a similar increase in either our Federal or Provincial tax rates . OTOH, you are (sarcasm aside) right, some drastic measures have to be taken to get that debt under control - did I hear "spend less?" - not in their nature is it, when "Job #1" is "Re-elect Me"? SoapBox

Fergie:

Thank you for posting a pic of the "Matthew" as the picture makes her look good!
...gotta love that "File Footage"Laugh Chunky looking ship, how's she take the weather? (apart from messing up her looks I mean) IIRC the Hudson wasn't too bad in that regard.Captain

Jeff: Close call with the Shellac can!  Glad it had a happy ending -that the Shellac itself was still OK after that time is a bonus!

Oh, and the result for the visit to the docs office? My prostate health is much better than it was a year ago.

Ulrich:

We had a nice dinner at a Chinese restaurant, lots to talk about and enjoying ourselves.
...Oh so good to read that! You sound a great deal more relaxed, and like your old self!Thumbs UpAngel - That's a whole lot of detail you'll be enjoying by the look of the video. I liked the joins in the pipes on the boiler separated out; nice touch.Thumbs Up At last a good night's sleep - it's been awhile coming eh? Let's hope this is the first of many! Have another Hot Choc on me...

Ken:  Chiseled out a few too-short bolt spaces in my day too, not pretty, but who's lookin'?

Flipped it over and check to see if I have wore the plating off the drivers. Still no copper showing.
I've used a silver plating powder for this some years ago, easy to apply, and it does re-coat the wheel (with a better-than-chrome silver conductive layer). So, if you need to re-plate some time, that's an option. BTW, are those balky rail joiners soldered?  It is a bit of a mystery this Y6 b. - Oh, I see you're on the track of loco wiring issues; hope that is fixable.

I think I'll call it a day - feeling fed up and a night's sleep may improve the outlook. Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

Oh, Ray's paying for it? Well, don't mind if I do...

Not much from me. Had fun trying to rehang a sliding door and that was a few hours. How hard could it be he said. Pah.

Didn't have much done on that station model I'm working on. Still haven't figured out what to paint the floor. Then to figure out something to do with the lightbulb. It's plenty bright enough for now.

Got another project I've been wanting to start that I am starting tomorrow hopefully. Going to get my Dad's 1980 Arctic Cat Pantera  running again. I know without a doubt that the carb will need new floats and a complete rebuild. A new belt my get installed and new spark plugs are another given. As soon as I get the work started, I'll keep you guys updated. Hey Ken, you wouldn't happen to know where I can get new carb gaskets would ya?

His store has everything the craftsman modeler could need. I am sorry I could not make the meet today as I had wo&k commitments..Sad You should come over next month for our meet which is held at our train club in Syracuse..(you have been there before). www.syracusemodelrr.org for details. It would be great to see you again in my neck of the woods. Gotta go...the dog is sitting at the door....gotta love when you have to shovel your way out of the house...another foot of snow coming tonight!!!....Glad the sled is all gassed up. Take care all...Tim

Evenin' folks............

Flo just a decaf to warm me up and help me relax!  I'll be in the back by the stove.

The Meet ended up going very well with almost 60 people showing up on a cloudy day with lots of flurries around.  One of the Clinicians didn't show,  Probably a weather related thing as he lives about 40 miles North of where we were and they were being buried again.  So we had the 2 other clinics without having to rush, the Modelers Showcase, and some time chat as well.

I went over to Elbridge, NY to a historical Club Layout in the old NYC Station there right along side the FGLK mainline tracks.  No trains moving today, so no railfaning shots.  Then I went over to a nearby hobby shop.  Borodino's.  he specializes in Scratch building items.  I get real happy in his store...  Spent about $20, so he is happy as well.  Our raffle more than paid all the bills for the day, so both divisions are happy too!

Roads were fairly bad on the way home as the white fluffy stuff had been drifting across the roads between there and here.

I was going to make a couple comments on some posts, but I am just too tired to even remember what they were....

Later!

Strong coffee in a melting  Snowy & Southern  mug, please. (snow is melting, not the mugMischief)

The little key-chain video camera arrived today. The good news is "it works".Big Smile That said, after 6 attempts at shooting some video of my wife's (HO) layout to share with y'all, it became quite apparent, the tracks will need to be cleaned first. Geepers, I thought burnishing them would keep them in ready shape for a while. Guess the tracks have been collecting dust.Hmm

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

 Just a quick stop.

Got to see four jets fly over for the Steeler gamer, while I was shopping.   Talk about LOUD.   Jessica thought they should be getting to the game, but at 300+ mph they will get at the stadium in a few minutes.

Jeff........I was shopping at Wal-Mart and thought you would like this.  They have a DVD "The Great Indian Wars" for $2.50.  I bought a copy.  Its looks pretty good.

Afternoon guys

Working on the essay again. Can't wait for summer so I can be done with writing for good.

Tried pressing the Urethan bushings into the control arms, but no go. They new bushings are about .20 too large. Tried everything I could think of but no dice. I'll call the place that makes those bushings when they open. If I have to send these back I may just buy new control arms off of rockauto (I can get a set from a 2003 cobra that are a better design and will fit)

Also tried to get the drivers seat back in (removed clutch quadrant yesterday) but it's an electric one and it wouldn't go foward or back. Took the rack apart, cleaned it, and put it back together. One side started to move. I take it apart and get at the worm gears. Both were busted. Gonna have to get another rack from the junkyards on monday. Don't know if I'll just pass on the electric one and get the older non-power one.

My throat has been feeling funky since last night. Feels like I have something caught in my throat when I try to swallow, but I'm not coughing. I don't have any congestion either. Maybe it's just a sore throat?

Gas, I feel a bit lucky around you guys with those cost to fill up. I have a 15.4 gallon tank, but I usually end up putting in 10-13 gallons into  it. I had to get 13.4 gallons the other day and it cost me about $44. But then I have to you plus (midgrade?). When I do some more work to it, I'll have to use premium.

My mother had an 03 expedition. Occasionally me or my father would use it (carrying more people or a trailer). She got so tired of filling it up she made a rule that whomever is using it when the "low fuel" light is on has to fill it up. I would look at the gas gauge before I borrowed it because it cost 85 bucks to fill it up.

Ken, That could easily be it. Have you had any issues with the BLI diesels since you run your trains alot. I only have 2 BLI locos (a pair of C30-7s; one with sound) and have actually done anything with them.

Watching the Ravens/Steelers game ATM. just doing that while I write. Gonna watch the Packer's game later.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good Morning! Coffee and crossed fingers please.

My two favorite commercials anymore are both GEICO (or however it’s spelled). The little piggy crying wee wee wee all the way home and the woodchucks chucking wood get me laughing every time. Simple minds I guess, like simple things.

I guess my sister is coming over again today. Why? I don’t know. That is if she does. What it will do is keep me home waiting, because she doesn’t know exactly when she will get awayConfused. Hopefully sometime between 1 and four she said. Depends on when her husband works. He’s still one of the low men on the totem pole at NS and any of you railroad guys know how THAT works. Said she’d call if she can’t make it. Which means there's a .05% chance she will call if she can’t make it. Any who, I guess I’ll shift my casual day to today maybe (unless I’m over ruled) and do tomorrow what I planned for today. Which really wasn’t much now that I think of it. Tomorrow shall return to being reserved for Church and dinner out with Brenda then relax and lounge. Maybe relax and lounge. Hopefully.

Barry- Me? Sarcastic? Surprise Why, I’ve never noticedWhistling. I’ll try to be more……Naaaaaaah!Mischief

Why the crossed fingers? Well I’ll tell ya. It’s time to shut down and reboot the old corn-puter. She’s a startin to slow down just a bit. Just starting to notice and as fast as a computer works and as slow as I think, the thing has got to be dragging by computer standards. Doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, and emptying of the temp files, removing of the cookies ( No Ray, not the eating kind so might as well put the cookie plate away), running of Superantispyware then reboot and all is well. BUT! No more than this thing is shutoff, usually in the middle of the night when MS reboots for an update or something, It's always a scary event on an older computer.

Welp, off to do something. Maybe continue to cleanup in the train room. May go retrieve my sawhorsies from Mom’s house. That will give me a surface to cut some ¼ inch OSB for the layout. Hm. Now there’s a thought.

Hey you dang woodchucks! Quit chuckin’ my wood!

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

TODD could take  a lesson form you and me, we abbreviate our "private" Dr.s visits to bare minimum, and leave gorey details out.

I agree. Sometimes it's best to impart as little information as possible.

Ulrich: Nice looking locomotive there!!

Vincent: I'm with Ken on this one. Loose wires, bad connections will do just that. As well, the idea that BLI seems to be having issues with their tender connections is a bit of a concern to me as well...

Ken: I like the tracks ahead series. Seen some really cool stuff on it...

Today, we be snowing ...another 3-4" worth is expected to fall on our noggins by this afternoon...more shoveling I guess...

I got our tank filled up this morning...total cost? $117.75....yay......notice how even this is nothing?

Anyways...off to get some stuff done around the house...have a good one people!!Big Smile
