Heartland Division CB&Q

Jeff ... I see Sundown Shops are still busy.

Yep. The crew needed something to do on a lousy wet day and playing locomotive body swap was just the ticket. Plus two locomotives that didn't run now run.

JR ... Yes, today we're all thinking and praying about Galaxy's surgery. I am looking foward to hearing from him when he can post here agan.

Lee.... I intended to say I was sorry you had to postpone the trip to SE MI. Great Lakes Hobbies will have to wait. Sounds like you get good prices on locos! As for Bachmann, I wll agree thye do well with the Spectrum line. Service is great, too, based on one exerience I had with one of the 4-8-2's.

Rob ... Thanks for the remark about the photo.

Jeff ... I see Sundown Shops are still busy.

Ray ... Like the photos. I, too, like your steam shovel!

Barry ... That's cold. .... brrrrrrr.

Johnboy ... Good to see you. How cold is it there?

Most of my MRR time has been on my scrap yard project.

Happy Model Railroding.

Whistling

Just stopped by for a slice of coffee cake and a HC, before getting down to a few household chores and of course more snow blowing. That has become a daily occurence here the last couple of months.

Also wanted to add by sentiments to JR's for a quick  and successful recovery for Galaxy. You are in our prayers and thoughts.  I think Garry mentioned there would be a special Prayer meeting in the Chapel car latter today for you.

Anyone in need of a little more snow? I can hardly see out my windows. Getting really tough to blow and shovel it that high.  Have to be careful as I don't want to feel the big one coming on like Red Foxx  (Sanford & Son) used to.

I got back to the train room last evening and got a double track section laid that is on the south side of the river from the Honeymoon Tunnels.  "Yes I know that isn't prototypical ,,,, but it is on the LM&E.

Don't let me fool you guys, (as if I already have )  there isn't too much that I have that is prototypical other than the Western Pacific Logo, and the time frame and the appropriate locomotives and rolling stock. There is a mixture of other western roads that used to pool with the WP. and I have several locos in (Reading Colors) that will be altered somewhat and patched for the Last Mountain & Eastern.

I hope you all have a great mid-January blues Monday.

Always glad to hear of the improvements in health, layouts and work situations of our members here.

You have to love those Jets,  Don't you ????.   It was great to see the Colts & Pats fall.

How do we get the Packers and Jets into the SuperBowl?????????????

Johnboy out....................for now.

Good Morning! Coffee and Biscuits and gravy please. Could you throw a couple scrambled eggs on the top? Thanks.

Internet's back to running it’s usual zippy self today. Didn’t do anything so I guess it was the service and/or the crowd after all.

M.L.King Day: Freezing rain and sleet likely before noon, then rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 36. South wind between 15 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Total daytime sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
Tonight: Rain likely before midnight, then a chance of rain and snow. Cloudy, with a low around 30. South wind 6 to 14 mph becoming west. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

I think today I think I shall clean up my mess in the trainroom from yesterday. If time allows, I may get the OSB and bl….um, foamZip it!. That would be nice to be able to continue with the track and work on the scenery with the ability to run a train. Sigh Maybe not. I just saw the above weather report. So, that depends on the timing of a trip. We'll see.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Mornin' everyone!

Just grabbing a cup of dark roast to go.

Gotta be at church in just a few minutes.  The memorial march should be fun this morning.....  It is currently -7°F outside....  We've done it before in this type of chilly weather so I guess we will do it today.  I will be at various points along the route getting photos of the march..

Gotta run!  see you later!

Good freezing morning all,

Yes it is 7F outside this morning.  I would require the use of several colorful metaphors to explain how cold it is when I let the dog out and the cat ran outside, and me in my bathrobe stepped out to catch her.  So I’m not even going to try.  Freezing rain switching to snow tonight…

I wired the tortoise switch machines last night and got them working.  I also wired two NJ International crossing flashers to a Dalle flashing unit and they work.  Wahoo.

Ken, yes a T-1.  It’s a nice unit with QSI sound.

Jeff, Actually I think Bachmann and Atlas are very close in detail and performance, but Bachmann wins on price.

Now to list the days confusion. I started out with three locomotives. An Athearn F7, a Proto 1000 F3 and a Bachmann FT and commenced to scramble them up. The Bachmann FT shell is now on the Proto 1000 F3 chassis, The F3 shell is now on the Athearn F7 chassis and the Athearn F7 shell is now on the Bachmann FT chassis. The Athearn chassis needed a new motor and drive line so I sacrificed an old MDC RS3 for the cause. The Bachmann chassis had to be rewired so I cut some pieces of wire from some old telephone and did the job with that. Whereas only one of the locos ran this morning all three run now and nothing really looks out of place.

Glass of water please.

Just popped in in case Galaxy goes to the horsepiddle before I get in tomorrow to say, good luck and you're in my prayers Hoss! Hope it works on the pain this time.

Leave something laying around and Jeff will do who knows what with it.

Ray- I guess the old ears ain't as bad as you thought. I was checking out the pics you posted and asked myself, "I wonder if that's his steam shovel?" I guess you heared me. You are lucky to live around were there is as much activity involving modeling. Outstanding modelling I might add. Thanks for sharing.

I've often thought of building some models that I like but have no use for on the old....gotta come up with a name for the layout. (Would use that one, but it's too long) Maybe make a diorama. But then I think, "what would I do with it? I've got enough stuff laying around" Who knows, I just may. Like I said there are a lot of structures I like but just won't fit on the Gotta Come Up With A Name. See?

Steamed veggies, please.

***Ray, very nice models. Love that steam shovel. Yes

Finished the retaining wall behind the wife's (HO) Fire Dept. Then whipped up some tar using grout, elmers glue & acrylic paint. Watered it down so it could be poured. Now that it's done, looks very dark, like it is fresh pavement. Might need to wash it over with some lighter tones later. Or, perhaps the little town rewarded their Fire Department!?!

I found that the Athearn loco had a dead motor. I looked around here and found a better motor for the chassis. It's a Roundhouse MDC motor with blue box flywheels and they absolutely would not come off for anything! So I got some parts together and removed the locos hex drive and converted it to blue box spline drive. It runs good and has that distinctive Athearn growl. It runs at a fairly respectable speed forward and a little over half speed in reverse. Athearn trucks, MDC worms and worm housing clips, MDC splines, MDC motor. Oh well, at least it runs now.

Evenin' folks!

Flo, just a decaf for me at the moment.

Ken, sounds like things are coming along well with the new job.

I got the certificates all printed out, checked, and paper clipped to the release form the parents are asked to sign.  Have put everything else I need to bring to Church tomorrow morning for the festivities in a neat pile that I will probably forget to take with me.........

How about a few more model photos from the Meet yesterday?

Yep, the Erie B2 Steam Shovel is mine.....

Got to figure out how to add photos to the Division Blog soon.  Hopefully some time this week I will sit down and come up with the combination to do it.  The Museum is using the same kind of blog and has photos posted all over the place, so I assume it can be done.

Hope you all have a great night, and Galaxy, you are in my prayers!!!

Later!

Evening Folks, darn I am tired!

Flo, Fried Catfish Plate and a Beer

John On the Y6 b problem I am 95% sure it going to be rail joiners. One area the Y6 b stall at is the worst spot on the bench. As a whole I don not like soldering rail joiners because it makes it a real pain to move the track if there is a problem. But on the other hand there might not have ever been a problem if it was done. Still seems odd that only the Y6 stalls there still.

I need to reread the part about the plating. (like I said I am beat) Is it something you did your self or had done?

Lee You got a 4-4-4-4 for $100.00? I think that is a T-1, am I right? I really wanted one but had 18 inch turns and I think it needed 22's.

If I get on my feet, and get to build the new layout the T-1 and Q 2 are to Engines I really like to have. All so like a H-8 and a Yellowstone.

George Good luck on the new layout. I am to the point I am ready for a new one my self.  Current layout is starting to have some operational problems and I am getting a little bored with it. I have a great plan now, just need to make sure I get to keep the house. Then out comes the saws all and away I go!

Work Front Had a decent day today, pain in the butt but still a good day. I am still amazed how everyone comes in at the same time? Far as simple tickets on the computer I am fine with now. But there is still a lot of stumbling blocks for me. Like how to Finalizing a tickets. This mean the customer has everything and we are done. All so looking up open tickets, customer has either not picked up or received everything they bought. It will come with time.

Today I wrote $2500 in new business X 7% = $175.00 plus $50.00 in spiff = $225.00. Not bad for 6 hours of work. Now if only I could do that every day. Big Smile

Guess I am going full time sooner than I was told. This is my last week of only working 3 days a week. Either they like me or are desperate, but either way off we go! Big Smile Hours are not as long as I missed figured. I will be working M T and Friday from 9:30 to 8 or 10.5 , Saturday 9 to 6 for 9 hours and Sunday 11:00 to 5:00 for 6 hours for a total of 46.5 hours. Compared to the 52.5 hours at Mattress Giant, seems like a short week now!

See you all later Ken your overworked friend! Big Smile

Hey guys

Saw the game last night. Very pleased with the outcome. Green Bay gets to play the Bears (again).

Found out why the bushings I bought wouldn't work. Turns out in 1996 ford switched to a hydro-bushing (IDK what that is all about). I'm using the control arms from my brother's 1998. My father wants the control arms under my car (94), and I bought bushings for my control arms. He said he'll order a set of replacements, and we'll swap around so he'll get the bushings I was trying to use.

Got the other door from the paint shop. Gutted it and the door from my car, and got the door on my car removed. I'll get it back together tomorrow afternoon and Tuesday.

Lee, I don't know, but there is a joke in their somewhere. (government is nonprofit?, okay bad)

Didn't know that acetone would cause rubber to crack and fall off. That would actually come in handy at times. Might see if that effects bushings as opposed to just burning them out. Granted I probably shouldn't have to do that for 15 years or so.

Galaxy, Good luck with the surgery.

Gonna go to the junkyard tomorrow. Hopefully find a 5.0 powered explorer there, and that 87 mark 7 is still there (want the heads from the 5.0 explorer, and the cam from the 87 mark 7)

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Evenin' Folks!

Janie, just a cup of hot cocoa for me right now.  I'll go and sitt near the stove in the back.

It is currently a nice crisp 12°F outside here in the Finger Lakes.  The snow has a distinct crunch to it as you walk.  Supposed to get down to 1°F overnight.

I have spent the entire afternoon trying to get in touch with the ladies who have the list of who won the Arts and Poetry contest.  They are the ones who have the job of contacting the families and try to get the kids to come to the MLK Service tomorrow....  After many, many phone calls and a very long wait, one checked her cell phone messages and find my name come up several times....  She called, "OMG!  I totally forget you needed the names............".  So, she is trying to get the half of the list so she can come over to the house where I will scan the list and start printing the certificates......

Jeffrey,  I was intrigued by the information you just posted........  But???  Why not just leave the Athearn F7 body on the Athearn F7 frame and the Proto 1000 F3 body on the Proto F3 frame, etc.???  I guess it must be a Diseasally thing or sumpin'?  i generally leave my steamers on the same chassis they came with......

I may be back later with some photos of the meet.....

I've discovered that the Athearn F7 body will fit on the Proto 1000 chassis but it's a very tight fit and almost takes an act of congress to get it back off. The Proto 1000 F3 body fits on the Athearn chassis with no problem. The Athearn body fits on the Bachmann chassis with only a minor alteration to the pilot for the front coupler. The Bachmann FT body will fit on the Proto 1000 frame but I have to add a couple of shims to the rear of the frame to keep the rear of the body from sitting too low.

Bachmann FT body on Proto 1000 F3 frame.

Evening, Janie - I'll have a Rio Grande mug of hot chocolate, please. Thank you!

Just popping by so everyone knows I'm just busy with (well, I'm) on-call (rather than dropped off the edge of our square/cube earth). Have been doing some thinking about the layout and what to start on next (kinda like you do in your train room sometimes, Todd. Smile, Wink & Grin Also went looking online this afternoon at some photo backgrounds (trying to find something suitable for the Southwestern U.S. where my RR is allegedly located).

Galaxy, I have you on my Angel list - and in His hands - for your surgery tomorrow. If you can check back in later tomorrow (or have your other half post for you), please do. If not, we'll await word later.

It's been an exciting weekend, trying to sort out some of the junk stuff. I got all my MRR booklets and the major model railroad supplier catalogs moved onto the bookshelves I had assembled earlier and located next to my bed. So now, I have an empty shelf on the bookshelves under the phone jack. Hmm, what can I put there...?

Think I'll sit a spell and finish my hot cocoa before I head on out. Only had one call out Sat. a.m., nothing last night or (so far) today. Sometimes I feel blessed when nothin' happens. Smile

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

***Der, neat old loco pic.

Heading down to the train room for a while. Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Cup of the dark roast please.

Darn NCIS marathon. Luckily there are comercials. Which means there is some progress being done in Toddland (of which I'm king). Slow, but progress non the less. I will be able to lay some more track should I choose, but I may just wait until I can complete the loop. Not sure just yet. To do that, I'll need another sheet of OSB and another sheet of the blue foam. Or pink. I think it'll be blue. Depends on what Menard's has, I recall they were cheaper, but don't recall which they had for sure. I think it was blue. Lowe's was pink I think. I kinda thought the blue was easier to work with. But it's OK if it's pin......

"ENOUGH of the pink or blue stuff! It doesn't matter for crying out loud!"

Sorry Vinnie.

Ray- Glad you're feeling better. I hope the.....cleaning out process ends soon.

Blue! (slam!!)

Good afternoon Diners: Not many in this afternoon I see. I'm relaxing after an excellent roast chicken lunch and a walk (the wind was naughty, but the house is nice and warm - the sun's come out briefly too)

Jeff: I see in the January MR, in an article on paper shell scenery, that the paper is stiffened and sealed with oil based primer like Kilz. He favoured that over Shellac because of the fumes.  How were the Shellac fumes in the trailer?

I've found that mustard also contains something that helps fight against prostate cancer and that's good for me as I love mustard. Especially the spicy brown mustard. The hotter it is the better I like it.
....So too, surprisingly, do stinging nettles! (and the leaves are edible as greens, or so I've been told ) Dried and in capsules, they're part of that cocktail I mentioned.  Mustard for us isn't mustard unless it's hot!   That yellow stuff sold for hot dogs is thick poster paint in comparison! My 2 Cents

nothing much planned for the day, maybe a little reading, a plain old book, with words printed on paper...

Lee:

John, just remember never to use acetone on rubber.  It will crack and fall off.
...Thanks for the tip, fortunately, the loco frames are metal!!!LOL  Thinking that it may be a way to "restore" the stickiness of AMI roadbed - not that I need to now, but it could have been useful when I was at the track laying stage! (Would have had to have kept the acetone off the foam sub-road bed!!!  )

George: An interesting choice, Electric freight ops.  Will there be any action on the 4 track main, or is it just  "something for the Trenton cut-off to fly over" - sort of like a river of steel?  Will you be powering by catenaries, or conventionally ?- I see from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7kQbiilKAo that out of the box it's conventional.

Todd:

So far they say a temporary increase, but what usually happens with any form of government, it starts out temporary and then waits for people to get used to it and then they extend or make permanent.
...History is on your side on THAT! IIRC, Income Tax itself was a "Temporary Measure" in Great Britain to fund WW1. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/Gifs/furious.gif
But it does lend credence to my argument about the use of percentages in arguments or decisions. They can be used accurately to create any appearance you choose. As you said a 66% increase by the news media reports actually works out to a 2% (rounded) additional tax. Or, 2 cents on the dollar. Depending on which side you're on and how you want it to sound.
...Wikipedia tells me it was Benjamin Disraeli, or Mark Twain (take your pick - I know mine) who said, "There's lies, d*mned lies, and Statistics!"?
They are going faster yet so I'm afraid a call will cost me an "upgrade" so to speak. Which.....could be the problem too.
...that sounds like out satellite TV - we eventually (after 12 years or so, had to bite the bullet and buy new receivers last year. Things have improved since we did that, and I suppose $99=TAX  each for Kris' mom and us spread over those 12 years isn't too bad.Whistling

Well, that's about it for me for today - depending on what's on TV tonight.  Took a photo of the disembodied decoder install  (TCS M4 on a LL GP 38-2 light board) to send to TCS technical. I can't see where I've done anything wrong - there are no shorts, but it just doesn't work.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!  Uh!  Huh???  Oh.....  Just woke up (well a couple hours ago).  First night in a week that i actually got a good sleep.  Then I spent an hour hacking up gunk that had accumulated in the airways during said sleep.  Good news is THAT I think the cold is getting better.

Zoe, how about a short stack of Buckwheat Pancakes, a side order of bacon, glass of Ed's OJ, and a pot of dark roast coffee for my FGLK Mug.  Oh and bring that bottle of "Real" maple syrup over and set it right down here at the Rivet Counter for me.

Jeffrey, sounds damp to me....  51°F....  To hot for my tastes this time of year.  We got about right here in the Finger Lakes right now.  Currently 19°F with a few little white thingies floating around from time to time.  The thermometer is supposed to bottom out at 0°F tonight!  Camping weather, YES!  "We're havin' a heat wave.....  Tropical Heat Wave.......!"

I have to print up a pile of MLK Art and Poerty awards today, but the rest of the day is going to be sit around and relax....

have a good one!

Good morning. It's 51° and extremely wet. The high is supposed to be 52° and there's a 70+% chance of rain. Rain and a thunderstorm as the weather guesser calls it.

No particular plans for today. I may get some more shellac onto the layout later. For some reason (rain maybe?) I don't think anybody will be calling me to help them with their stuff. But then again there's no telling what the future may bring. I have a Proto 1000 F3-A and I'm wondering if an Athearn F7 shell will fit on it or for that matter a Bachmann FT shell. I may experiment with that today.
