Good Morning! Coffee please. I’ll enjoy this knowing that for the time being, I may be a better guitar picker than Ray. More accomplished? No.

I’m sure the title will be fleeting as he probably wouldn’t have to practice much to surpass me. I’d give him oh, say…., seven and a half minutes. No Flo! That is NOT counting his tuning time! Give me some credit. Yeeesh. Tough room.

Lee- After I retired I gained 15 needed lbs. I was….let’s say …., slim. But lost 40 even more needed lbs after starting to deal with Mom. Now I’m skinny. I wish you luck on slimming down, just not why or the way I did. Sorry, you’re on your own from me on the solder jobs. Like welding, I’m an effective brazer/solderer, not a pretty one. Laugh

I can weld, but I ain’t no welder.

Ken- Tell me about grabbing the wrong cans or bottles. Worst for me is Pepsi bottles in the gas stations. They change their labels so often I can’t keep up and end up many times grabbing the wrong one. I loove Dr Pepper, but not the flavored ones. Found THAT out the hard way once or twice. It doesn’t help that the stockers throw a row of close appearing but different flavored soda in with regular. I think it’s done on purpose to get you to unknowingly try it.

Robby- Never hurts to try. All you are out is the time to fill out the app. Worst that could happen is you wasted that time when you could have taken a nap. BEST that could happen is you get a real good job out of it. My BIL got on as a conductor for NS in Decatur, IL a few years ago. He’s pretty happy. He didn't think he'd get on either.

Welp, time to contemplate my navel, or get a move on. Gotta put the groceries away at the restaurant at about 10:30, then have to get a cake or something like for my aunt and cousin who are going to drop by this afternoon to see Mom. They called last night too late to make anything and today, though there is time…..let’s face it..., I don’t want toMischief Whistling. Gotta w**k at 4:30 and Mom should be pretty tuckered by then after their visit. In the mean time I must get Mom up and medicine down along with a few odds and ends around the old house. So I suppose I’d best get started.

Oh look, a squirrel.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

EDIT:  OK! OK! OK! maybe only three minutes.

Good morning. It's a nice balmy 38° here in the Sportsman's Paradise. We're expecting a high of 55° with the sun making brief appearances throughout the day. No autographs please. Tonight should be a little warmer than last night as we're expecting a low of 40°.

I'm going to attempt to get some layout work done today. Yesterday the most I could do was look at it as I was feeling so tired. I feel a bit better this morning. We'll see how long that lasts once I get busy. One of today's planned projects is to make a railroad crossing using nothing more than two thin strips of wood and some wall joint compound. I usually use waxed shoestrings but seeing as I don't have any and don't feel like going to get any the strips of wood will have to do.

Robby, I did the debt consolidation program for the last 4 years.  Just got off the program in October 2010 and it feels pretty good.  Now I’m trying to put something into savings every month, but that seems tough now and then with all the added taxes and the unexpected expenses that pop up.  Don’t even get me started on the price of diesel, $3.39 to $3.49 a gallon.

Todd, I do pretty good soldering once I had a short period of instruction by a guy that did it for 40 years. He started me off with a torch and a soldering iron, once I mastered that I was elevated to soldering gun and iron. Now I prefer the iron. Welding is a different story; I can stick two pieces of metal together that will never come apart, but it’s downright ugly.

Jeff sounds downright cold for the Gulf Coast states.  Brownsville, TX had a low of 40 last night.

Ulrich, I would bet that if you decided to go standard HO gage there is enough of us that could pitch in materials to get you started.

Tell me about it. Even this late in December the grass usually needs cutting, but not for the last couple of years.

Good Morning All,

24F and partly cloudy with the wind still gusting back and forth. I'll have eqrly lunch please a swiss bacon burger melt on sourdough lightly toasted and onion rings - just like gourmet Laugh

Got more done with basement wiring and clearing out yesterday. I will actually have a usable hobby bench once the CFO clears the dining room chairs from the area and they are just about ready for staining and refinishing. so with luck this week. Also just about set to start framing and covering walls for the actual layout room so progress is slowly happeneing.

Ulrich - it's got to be disheartening for you but do hang in there. As Lee suggested, we're more than happy to help out when the time comes.

Jeff - I found about a dozen Bachmann 18"r n/s curves with attached roadbed when cleaning. Any use to you? If they are of interest you can drop me a P/M or whatever through the forum.

Back to the shop, I'll check back in later.  CUL, J.R.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have a bowl of hot oatmeal w/ brown sugar along with the dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR Mug please.  I'll be sitting in the front booth watching everyone shovel sn*w outside.

It's another gray day here in the Finger Lakes.  The thermometer currently says it's 29°F outside ("We're havin' a Heat Wave.......  Tropical Heat Wave.....")  Knock on wood, we haven't had much snow at all this Winter so far.  Just lots and lots of gray.........  Sun is supposed to come out for the next few days though.

Need to start cleaning the house for company on New Years Day...  Still have a few cords of wood to move and stack on the back porch, and a few other ought to get moving on items today.  May find time to play in the train room as well....  (Have to dry some clothes and do another wash....Whistling)

A happy 5th. day of Christmas to all!

Once again, life gets in the way. My nephew came over needing the loan of my Dremel tool and needed a third hand on working on his truck. Put in a front end stabilizer, worked on the right side front wheel bearing and put new bushings in for the rear sway bar. Then we went down and worked on the starter on my father's truck. Loose wire. Easy fix. Stayed after for stew for dinner.

Evenin'

Flo, appears to be a slow night in here.....  had to rescue the thread from way down the page.  Well, I'll have a cup of decaf to warm me up a bit.  I'll just sit right here at the Rivet Counter and show off what I made today!

I have spent several hours trying to find some old Electric Motors (industrial type) from the 1920's in HO scale.  The ones that are out there, nobody seems to have in stock.  So......  After a few days of trying to get the brain to function correctly, I came up with some items in stock here at home to fabricate one of my own.

The Seneca Lake, Ontario, & Western RR services a quarry in it's territory (well it will when I am finished).  The quarry has had several good years and the owner decided to upgrade some parts of it's operation.  They have gone to trucks to cart gravel and stone, and have recently built a new stone crusher building.  At the same time they moved from steam power to the new electric.  They can save on labor not having to hire men to keep the several steam engines fired and working.  They now have a Steam boiler plant generating Electricity right on the property (or will just as soon as I build it).  But back to the problem....

Here is an electric motor just built that will supply power for the belt driven machines in the workshop.

Oh yeah I straightened that leg on her right after I took the picture....  Just needs painting and hooking up.

Later!

Ray- You've done a great job on that motor  but I must say it's a waste of time and money. I'm sure that the quarry owners are trying to shave some expenses with an eye towards the future, but alas I'm afraid they are throwing good money in the wrong direction. Electricity will never replace steam. It's a pipe dream. I hope the S.L.O. &W. Doesn't sink all their assets in diesel either. Don't listen to the rhetoric.

Jeff- Welcome to my world of plans being changed. Oh wait. You were probably there first. In fact I do believe I remember you sitting in the center seat shaking your head when I first showed up. Caboose is looking good so far.

Well, (deep subject for this shallow mind I know) I guess I'll be hittin the hay. Maybe a cookie first, then hit the hay. Yeah that sounds good.

Evening all, just a RBF for me.  Stopping in for the night and seeing what everyone is up to, or has been up to.

Der much appreciated for the mug of hot chocolate.

Ray the motor looks great, I really like it.

Jeff, work caboose seems to be coming along, now probably some barrels and the like in the open area and you'll be set, right?

Welp, not a whole lot happening around here tonight, waiting on Amy and the girls to get home so that I can put all of us to bed.  Weather is supposed to be warming up a bit starting tomorrow, high of 62 and sunny but then the rain moves in and will probably cool things right back down, oh well, c'est la bie, as they say.

Guess that's about it for me, think I'm going to call it a night and catch y'all in the morning.

Later taters!

Good Evening and Happy Holidays to all the Diners!

It seems most of you had a good Christmas and ate lots of that no calorie Christmas food.

We  went to visit our friends in Thief River Falls before Christmas and came back on Christmas eve just in time to go out for dinner. My MIL invited us along with the SIL and her 2 daughters out for dinner at a nice hotel in town. Had a good meal and enjoyable time. We went to my SIL for Christmas dinner. The family is now down to only 6 now so it isn't much of a crowd. We did have turkey which is traditional here at Christmas.

I was just out with the dogs and it is a very balmy 22F right now in a light snow. The heat wave is supposed to end tomorrow but still lows of -10F aren't bad for this time of year.

Not much happening on the RR but that seems to be the case for most of here in the  Diner. I've been working on a Woodland Scenics Dairy for a month now and don't even have all of it painted. I have been running trains a bit. I did get a BMan GP9 for Christmas in CN green and yellow. I am impressed at how well it runs even with the stock decoder. It is the first road diesel in CN colours on the layout and likely will be the last. I model transition era but I don't want too much transition.

Well getting late so I had best head for bed. Been getting up a lot a night with little Pippa. Last night it was 4:30, 6:30, and then 8:00. Getting up for me means putting on pants, parka and boots, and then carrying her outside as she can't see much. Luckily I can usually go back to sleep.

Good Morning All,

30F this morning and best of all no wind. Maybe now the roads can get cleared for real. Still dark at 7am so no telling if were getting partly cloudy or full overcast - depressing time of year.

Got a bit more done in the basement last night after w..k but I knocked off early to watch the UConn womens' game and the Kennedy Center induction ceremony - Merle Haggard was being honoroed you see... But all is not well. I think the artists doing Merles' music were mostly good, but they had a couple of people up there had no business being on stage - disrespectful I think it was. Merle Haggard can be mentioned in the same sentence with Irving Berlin or Willie Nelson and is as well known for his performances as his writing so you'd think they's have people on could give a decent rendering of his music but no, we get kid rock and some other doofus who couldn't carry a tune in a 5 gallon bucket. Yech!. Showx what happens when you get some Hollywood type casting things. They could have marched out and gotten the first dozen musicians out of the local clubs and gotten better results. Of course given the audience the producers could have had a bit of fun with it all by doing Fightin Side of Me or at least Rainbow Stew. Ok Vinnie - back off and take your lousy soapbox back. Sheesh I didn't know your brother was a famous producer dude. For heavens sake let go my arm. Hey! I was headed for the counter - not the back door! Hey!

 Good morning.

Finally made it to the LHS and spent some of my Christmas money.  Got some road bed HO and N scale, so rail joiners, and wire.   That should give me something to do now.  Other than that, just get some stuff done around the house.

Here's a shot I got yesterday from the back door of Jessica's classroom.  One it shows how close she (classroom) is to the track, and two this was a TEST run.  At the RR crossing NS was replacing a track, and I guess these two engines were the test to make sure it was right.   After those went by, about five minutes later a  CONRAIL train came by with empty hoppers.

Ray..........That's a neat looking motor Thumbs Up.

 Jeff......I agree, nice looking caboose.

Good Morning! Coffee please.

“If we make it through December…… We’ll be in a warmer place come summertime. If we make it through December….”

J.R.- Didn’t see it, wish I knew it was on though. I’m sure, however, I would have felt the same way you do. I’ve seen how some “new” artist pay tribute to an icon. I think I’ll just sit here and drink.

IndifferentYou gotta hand it to Lee. He says what’s on his mind.

G- Not bad spelling for a man who’s asleep. Not bad at all. I understood it.

Plans changed. Was going to work in the train room, but the plan has been interrupted by a hair appointment for Mom Brenda made. I should still have time in the room, just not as much. That hour will seem like eternity. Tonight is the Christmas party at the restaurant, but it's at 9pm. After the place closes. Mom said she will have no problem going to bed by the time I will leave at about 8:30. In fact, she insists.

Robby too?

Hmmm. Maybe I need to check out Jeff’s caboose again.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the Eggs Benedict this morning with a cup of......  Huh? no I didn't see any TV last night...?  Who got thrown out by Vinny?  No worry here.  I don't ever watch TV.....  uh...  You know, I can't hear it well.

Whew!  That was close.  Vinnie was almost over to me when Zoe waved him off..........

Ray- You've done a great job on that motor  but I must say it's a waste of time and money. Electricity will never replace steam. It's a pipe dream. I hope the S.L.O. &W. Doesn't sink all their assets in diesel either. Don't listen to the rhetoric.

Todd, it seems that Old Man Dalrymple, the owner, is a city guy and really likes the new electric lights.  Somebody told him that before long they will be putting electricity out into the rural areas so everyone will have it.  He says someday they will have something called a Grid, I think,  so power will be really dependable without a lot of outages........  Nobody can seem to talk any sense into him at all.  As for the SLOW, diseasal will never effectively replace good old dependable steam power on this line!  No sir!

Just got a call from my son.  They need to change the day they are coming over for a Turkey Dinner (may be Sunday).  That's OK as it gives me another day to get prepared.  He also gave me some bad news about his MIL's little dog, Lucy.  She has had Kidney failure for some time now and recently has gone into liver failure as well.  MIL and Art's wife are on their way to the vet as I type to have the sweet little girl put to sleep.  She is only about 6 years old.  Spent the first half of her life in a Puppy Mill.  She is the product of severe inbreeding and was breed much to young produced several litters before the place was shut down.  MIL ended up adopting her and she has been a very loved little dog for the last 3 years in her house.  Sweet little thing.....  She will be missed.

Better get a move on, have lots to do.

Later!

Ray- I'm sorry to hear about Lucy. Stories like that really tear at my heart. At least she had a wonderful loving last half of her short life. My heart and prayers go out for Lucy's two legged family.

Personally, I feel people like Lucy's first "owners", well, hanging is really to good. But a few nice superficial yet bleeding wounds and a trip a ways south of Jeff, then tied to a stump would be close. Let the bugs and alligators do the rest. Just a thought off the top of my head. Right Hug

Shhh Did Vinnie leave yet? May I have a regular to go please?

Ray - sorry to hear about Lucy. Rattyour toy terrier is a product of a puppy mill in Amish country so we've been worried about all that also. On top of that she's so thin she doesn't do well in the cold weather here. My daughter used to dress her up in sweaters but she hates them and spends all her time wiggling out of them so we just keep an eye out for her. With the Hawks over the field behind the shop Rattys' weight and size were a real concern though she's big enough now (just over 8 lbs) that she probably won't be swooped off with.

Thanks for the coffee ladies and I'll CUL, J.R.

In an attempt to escape an endless "All our of our agents continue  to be with other customers; please hold to keep your call priority. Your call is import to us, and an agent will be with you shortly. Thank you"; approaches back door and sees signs of a "Disturbance in the Force' as if two gents had been flung out in to the snow bank!  Wonders why I would want to" keep my call priority", since it's obviously low...see's, through window in the door, Vinnie approaching ....Makes note to behave...(turns out that the site I was trying to access, and that was kicking me to a "Fill out these 5 security questions" field, had instituted this extra layer of security  - but failed to tell "valued clients" that this was what was going on, and that the log-in would proceed normally once the questions were answered and filed.Bang Head...Ok, enough of THAT;  here's my first attempt at adding a snow plow to an N Scale loco. I thought it would be interesting to do the air line hoses so the ports in the plow have some purpose. Geeked

A further thought was that if I was going to do more of those,( and I have 7 or so snowplows in hand)  a brass template for drilling the three holes for the air hoses on each side of the anti-climber would be a useful item.  Making that is proving to be a PITA. It doesn't seem to matter how accurately I mark the spots for the holes, when the drill bit in the pin-vise hits the brass sheet for the second or third hole, it goes way off. So pre-mark with a punch to stop any skidding - a track nail ought to fit the bill. Same difficulty however, the second or third punches don't line up with the others Bang Head I think I may now have that wrestled to the workbench - I've three punched places in about the right order on the sheet, and am on my second hole as I type. It's a #76 drill (0.020) and the line of three holes is no more than 1/8th inch long. ....Well, it's done - no prettier than it has to be, and the middle hole wandered even with taking all the care I could find! I can't see buying a Micro-Mark mini drill press to actually do this properly when I have a need for it perhaps once or twice a year - However,as it is  it's SO much prettier than any attempt I could make at welding! LOL I've thrown a masking tape handle on it, and labeled that so I can find it once it's thrown in the small implements drawer!

Oh yeah I straightened that leg on her right after I took the picture....
...You too?  - My photos nearly always show things I hadn't noticed!  That's a neat scratch motor - I had to do a scratch build for my container crane's raising and lowering mechanism. -it's hidden underneath the crane and the motor is more hidden yet, so I didn't bother with a bunch of super details (even if I knew what those might be - which I don't  - I had no photo so just imaginengineered itHuh?) all I put onto the aluminum rod I used for the motor were cooling fins, and some green paint.

I bet Old Man Dalrymple has his house rigged with those small ACDC insulators   to keep that shiny copper wire stuff off his walls!Cool

Tea time has come and gone, and Kris still not back from the gym but don't let her see that! Blindfold

Ah, here's the car - better look busy! Smile, Wink & Grin

 Afternoon Folks

There are 2 good things about winter!

1 Don't have to cut the grass.

2 Never have to drink warm Beer

Flo, speaking of Beer, I will take one and a Big Boy Sub.

Guitar Front Todd so you play as well? Do you know how to read Tab? I have always played rhythm and want to try some lead now. I found a pretty good site but for the life of me I can not figure out the sequences to play the notes in?

Far as the Pepsi bottles, I don't get it either why they keep changing them? I don't think new customers will buy them just because there is a different lapel?

Caffeine free Dew is gone, I had my caffeine fix today and my mood is better.

Train Front Well it blew chunks today, only thing that did not go wrong is I did not smoke any decoders! Whistling But I have not turned off the power yet either! Laugh

Hope to have Simon and his son's over this weekend and decided to run some of the alternate routs to get the rail clean. My Santa Fe freight F-3 train would not take one turnout no matter what I did! About half the cars would clear the turnout but 4 cars kept picking and derailing. Funny thing is a 35 car train pulled by Monon had no problems?

Then I tried to park my UP Dash 9 Pearl Beer train on a passing spur. Half of the Monon train made it by, then a car caught the Dash 9, ripped off half of the front gap irons and then derailed the train.

Next I decide to run my SP SW 900 pulling a few coal cars on the main line. While I was moving the SW 900 and it cars I must have left one a little to close to the mine loop. NYC F-3 clipped a coal car and on to the floor it went! Not the F-3 but the coal car. Lost the coupler cover but found the wheel set and Kadee coupler and spring.

Ulrich I sure know how you feel about giving up. At this point I don't even know how much longer I may have the house.  So the day dream of building the layout is pretty much over till I see what happens.

If you would lower your standards to HO and would use DC I have a few things I would throw in. I have a Stewart Rio Grand F-3 you could have. (Right Road Name wrong gauge) Motor is not quite right and will ate a decoder. But with some oiling I think you get some DC time out of it.

I would all so part with a PK 2000 Monon BL 2. Again the motor's draw a little to much power and will eat a decoder. I would all so throw in a few rolling stock as well.

I would all so be happy to send you the track program for the hopefully coming new layout. You can use the free 3D Plan It program t run it, add tress and buildings but would not be able to save the additions. Still fun to run and just play with.

A person needs something to look forward to and play with. Guess that is one of the main reason I am getting interested in Guitar again.

 See You folks later.

Ken- I wouldn't say I play the guitar, but I guess some would say I do. I was joking about about being better than Ray. Even for three minutesLaugh. But yes I do read tab. I'm not sure just what you mean by sequence. The problem with most sites is the tabs numbers are used without the corresponding notes on a staff below to give the player the timing for each note. You have to know the song and just know where you are by recocgnizing what you are playing to know how long to hold the note and where the rests are. I find just reading music easier in that respect, but tab is almost a necessity to get the correct tone/sound for each particular note in a particular song since a middle C is in about fifty three different tonal positions on the fret board.

Ok so fifty three miiiight be an exagerration. 42.Wink
