cudaken

Found some more engines, all are Athearn Blue Boxes. All so getting close to the box of cheap Life Like Engines, most are Santa Fe Warbonnet's F units. So if you want to make some dummies your chances is coming. One that still run, will be given away at my LHS.

Athearn blue box engines? Please describe them.

Pumpkin pie, please.

***Jeffrey, like your new plans. Once done, it should be easier for you to work on. Also kinda cool that you will then be virtually "surrounded" by trains.Cool

***Garry, they were carrying grain. The local birds sure will be enjoying themselves. BTW, nice loco pic there!

Had a run-in with a trespasser today. My wife had her hand on the phone about two heartbeats away from dialing 911. Same redneck couple that I kicked off our new land a couple months ago. I about lost it when this jerk raised his voice as if he had any right to be there. Probably a good thing I wasn't packing today, as I would have drawn on him. I'm too old/unhealthy to get physical these days, as tempting as it was with this idiot. Wrote down his liscence plate number. (Rant over)

Need to make some train time one day soon. Instead put up additional, very obvious NO TRESPASSING signs this evening.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Good evening diner gang!!..A typical fall night here in Upstate N.Y so I will take a slice of apple pie..scoop of vanilla...and a cold glass of milk. Been awhile since I actually posted here. The last few weeks have been a little rough. My wife started having pain in her knee about 3 weeks ago without any warning. Let's just say that night we were in the E.R for pain meds and doctors scratching their heads. The next day we went to the surgeon that operated on that same knee a few years ago for a small meniscus tear and some arthritis...routine stuff. He drained what I could only describe as poorly mixed lemonade out of her knee and sent it off to the lab. Long story short he said white counts 65,000 but no "infection" on the sample. He was stumped. Went home in a leg brace...more pain meds. We were back a week later after the most painful week I have ever seen my wife have. She was admitted and he did surgery the next day and basically just "cleaned out" the knee and sent more samples to the lab. After almost a week in the hospital and many lab samples it was determined she had pneumococcus. A nasty bacterial infection in her knee. No one has a clue as to how it got there..(my guess is something has been festering since the 1st surgery in there). So now we get the lovely routine of giving her high dose antibiotics daily through a picc line in her arm at home. Plus home nurse visits and physical therapy. For four weeks!! I truly feel my worst for her but I have had to be strong the last few weeks for our 9 year old daughters sake. I now know what it truly feels like to play single parent and work each day. Especially when you daughter asks if she has any clean bras to wear Surprise So I figured I would vent a little here about my frustrations since you all are caring folk who never judge. On the lighter note I was able to sneak away for a few hours to the fairgrounds to help the club set up the modules for the big 2 day train fair. I love this show as I get to see a lot of people in this hobby that you only see this time of year. Thanks for listening!!!...Embarrassed

A true friend will not bail you out of jail...he will be sitting next to you saying "that was friggin awesome dude!" Tim...Modeling the NYC...is there any other?

Since we're in AZ, I will have Southwestern Steak and Pinto Beans, please.

Nothin' better than authentic Southwestern cooking!

I assume the diner was dispatched via NYC-ATSF from upstate NY to northern AZ. That would have been the quickest way assuming we're in that era. I recall riding the Santa Fe from Chicago to Los Angeles. They operated some long trains moving across Kansas and Eastern Colorado at about 90 mph, and it was a smooth ride.

JimCG is the diner's Santa Fe fan. Where is he?

Rob ... I hope the tresspassers stay away. Your hearing the train wreck in the middle of the night reminds me of a time I was awakened very late in the night. It was 1961. A huge explosion awakened me and lighted my bedroom. Thinking lightning struck the house, I started down the hall to awaken others in the family. Suddenly, however, it was dark. Then there were sirens, the old mechanical style sirens. Police and firemen kept coming and coming with all of those sirens. It was a TWA Constellation, propeller-type airliner. 78 people died on a nearby field.  I can't forget that.

Glad everyone liked the Monon BL2. Come to KY and see it!

I've got most of the drill work done and I feel like I've gone 6 rounds with an octopus. The holes are 1 to 2 inches apart. I'll cut through the area between them with a finishing saw. More hard work but a workout is supposed to be good for you. If my doctor knew what I was doing he'd probably have me tied up in the corner. Another hour to hour and a half should see the middle section removed. After that there's a part of a 2x4 going across the front that has to be cut and taken out. I've already put in an addition leg to take the weight of the west side of the layout when the beam is cut.

The middle section is out and the beam has been cut. The part you see hanging in the photo is the park section. It's going to need a little support under the sides at the front to keep it from dropping into the abyss. I don't know about you guys but I'm tired.

Oh yeah, I remember hearing about that Guy Fawkes. Met some people from the UK (one of them worked as a security guard for Cadburys. sweet job.) and they helped to host a bonfire with some more American country twists. Skynard, quads, and Jeeps, need I say more?

Got the middle section cut out last night and I feel like I've been trying to bench press a Mack truck. The wiring comes next. I've decided to do a complete rewire of the west side of main layout. I can splice in the track wires from the east side and the extension easily. The structure wiring for the extension is intact but the same can't be said for the structure wiring of main part of the layout. Part of it was ripped out to make way for removing the middle section so I'll be rewiring that too. I just have to work out what takes 5 volts and what takes 12 volts.

Lunchtime!

Zoe, a burger and a salad, please - add a RBF to it!

Guy Fawkes - the chap who wanted to blow up the British parliament in 1605 in order to re-establish the Catholic faith in Great Britain with no success. He was hanged on Jan. 31st, 1606 Whistling

Good Morning! Coffee. Draggin’ butt again this morning. Been that way for a couple days.

I always use the "quick reply" at the bottom right of the post block thing.

Wow! Is G excited or what? I’m not too keen on the paper silohuette people myself. But, for those that do, it’s fine by me.

G- I know the refridgeadeezer is on the back burner, but like....uh...someone... said. Shop for the sratch and dents. Many times the stores have scratch and dents that they discount deeply for cosmetic scaring. Saw a $600 stove at Sears with a scratch with a crease, though not too deep, but fairly good sized, along the side that usually is unseen because of the counter to the stoves left, for 200 some $. Almost bought it for Mom’s house but couldn’t do it in the end. Just me. You’re exactly right on the tv’s appearance in the store. Most times they have crappy signal strength issues and they are not adjusted well. Unfortunately that is something you won’t know until you get home. Best to err on the side of caution. Seems to me the stores would want to show off the pictures the best they can be.

Chris- Schlitz. Now there is one I can say I don’t care for.No Unless it's free.YesLaugh

Ulrich- You’re just jealous. We United Statsians stole your beer……..then perfected it! HA! Hahahahaha. ( Wink )

Jeff- Boy talk about a difference. I like the track plan. Very simple, yet…..very nice. Are you keeping the spur to the left of the engine house? I can’t tell which is the editing oopsy. To keep or not to keep, THAT is the question. {personally, I’d keep}. Also, do you think you’ll make a small yard in that area? Reason I ask this is with as many trains as you have, or should I say potential trains, you don't have many places to keep them . I know I ran into that issue with my first return to the hobby plan. I couldn’t get one train out of the way of another and had no real storage for cars to use later without constantly placing on and off the layout. You’ve been doing this waaaaaaaaay longer than I have so you probably have this already ciphered out, but just in case you have been running with plenty of room for so long you didn’t notice… thought I’d bring it up. By the way, enough room in the middle for a chair and table? OK, I see the latest picture. Doesn’t look like it. But it does look like you could at least get a chair in there for a break while you figure out just what to do next AND, you can change the settings and the filter on the AC next year without your sticks.

Ken- I don’t think so. Pearl has been petering out since the eighties. It used to be neck in neck with the National Beer of Texas, Lone Star, for most of it’s existence as the most popular beer in Texas. Their battles for number one where legendary. Pearl used to be sold nation wide and even canned beer for the troops overseas in WWII. Now it’s getting hard to find outside eastern Texas. It’d be a shame to lose itCrying. Last time I checked the closest to me was a distributor out of Little Rock Arkansas. So a road trip would have to be in order. Actually the cars I have, and assume you have too, are the Pearl /Country Club cars. Two separate beers. Pearl bought Country Club years ago. It is still around, I think, so it will work prototypically on my non prototypical world.

Fireman216- Gee, I’m glad they finally got your wife some help. I assume she is more comfortable now? Prayers for her recovery.

Well! don’t try to blowup British Parliament.

Has ANYONE heard from Keith? He just walked out of the yard and….poof! How about PC? Anybody heard? I know Ryan is busy, busy, busy and peeks in the window from time to time. (waves at window). Now that you mention it I still have some “Finger Lickin’ Rub”. Wondr what’s for dinner? HmmmmStick out tongue.

Oh look! There’s a Penguin on the tele!

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

I've cut all the layout wiring free of the control panel and I rewired the east turnout. It's the only thing wired to the control panel at this point. More to come.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Afternoon, pot of coffee please...

TODD: My favorite beer is.............whatever YOU are pouring! Laugh I'm wondering if my "odd beers" pusher, Johncy's in Solon and North Liberty, would have/could get Pearl, Lone Star, etc. I mean, if they're as good as you say...

ULRICH: "dishwater" Now THAT had me about falling out my chair.Big Smile I've had some brews over the years THAT perhaps were made from some other form of..."gray" water...WhistlingIck!Dead Kinda late in saying this, but here too are hopes and prayers THAT the job comes through for you.

JEFF: Wow. Don't know what else to say Pal...just don't (I know, probably too late) overdo it.

KYLE: OK, I'll admit it, I had to look up Guy Fawkes...and I went to Catholic school for 11 years!

Well (NOT a deep subject), I 'spose I'd best figure out what to do today...it's already after one 'o clock, and so far all I've done is taken Rerun out for his chores.

JEFF: Wow. Don't know what else to say Pal...just don't (I know, probably too late) overdo it.

I'm trying not to overdo it this time. I just work for a bit, usually 15-20 minutes then rest a bit, say 30-45 minutes. I still have more wiring to clear from under the layout. ID'ing the track wires is gonna be fun. Each block has a different color combination and there are 16 blocks. In the new wiring scheme I'll be combining some blocks and cut it down to 9 or maybe as few as 6. That will still allow me to turn off an area that has a short.

Good Afternoon All,

Just heading out the door from the shop and thought I'd get a regular to go. Spent the morning cleaning winter wheels and changing out tires for the family fleet. Fixed the rim #3 son annihilated last winter and all is balanced and well now.

Jeff - looks ambitious. I'm glad you're trying to moderate the labor as we don't want you back in the er or other dire consequences. Fewer blocks should be easier so long as you gt the wiring sussed out. It looks like you're going more for a 'round the room deal, no?

Well here's my coffee and I'm out the door. Catch Y'all later.  J.R.

Good afternoon Diners: Spent the morning at a Craft Show selling calendars for our local Hysterical Society. Sold out, and have a list of back orders - so that wasn't too bad.

The I have to do my civic duty and be sure the parties I want in office get there. THis is the first time everyone in NY has to use those stupid opti-scan ballot readers. Used to be old Lever pulls in a private booth you pull a lever behind a curtain that no one can see and your vote gets counted as  a number taht gets tallied. WHile it IS possible numbers can get misread, I vote for that method over a computerized system that can be manipulated or compromised. They have been shown to be compromised and manipulated. SO not looking forward to it. ALso people can see your paper ballot while you carry it around, although they are supposed to give you an envelope to conceal your ballot until you place it in the machine for tallying. Still I don't trust it! I will be SOOOOOO glad when it is over so we STOP GETTING PHONE CALLS TO SUPPORT THIS OR THAT CANDIDATE!!!!! AND MAIL FLYERS TOO! I am Independent, so they ALL COURT ME for my VOTE!
...in Canada it's graphite on dead trees with a simple X in the box of your choice. It's a great system, and the only record is your name crossed off a voters list for that polling station when you get your ballot paper. No identifiers otherwise - and no-one appears on a list of "Party Affiliation" connected to the election, so phone calls and so on are kept to a minimum - at least in this part of Nova Scotia they are.  Just an observation from north of "the land of the free."Whistling

I painted my first stripped shell, and attempted to letter it. I had some serious trouble with the dry transfer decals. I just couldn't get them to transfer cleanly without breaking, or staying put while I attempted to rub them. Was rather frustrating, and resulted in sketchy results. I moved on to the numbers, and really didn't have much luck. I think I'm going to strip it and attempt the maneuver again. Any tips?
Have you tried warming the transfer sheet with a hair dryer before using it? It may help.  i know you've now bought wet transfers, but in case you don't want to waste the dry, it may be worth a shotMy 2 Cents

NERM:

Color me confused on what y'all are talking about,
...It's a Brit thing, and Ulrich has the nub of it. Here's the Wikipedia version. Guy Fawkes (13 April 1570 - 31 January 1606), also known as Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish in the Low Countries, belonged to a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

Fawkes was born and educated in York. His father died when Fawkes was eight years old, after which his mother married a recusant Catholic. Fawkes later converted to Catholicism and left for the continent, where he fought in the Eighty Years' War on the side of Catholic Spain against Protestant Dutch reformators. He travelled to Spain to seek support for a Catholic rebellion in England but was unsuccessful. He later met Thomas Wintour, with whom he returned to England.

Wintour introduced Fawkes to Robert Catesby, who planned to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The plotters secured the lease to an undercroft beneath the House of Lords, and Fawkes was placed in charge of the gunpowder they stockpiled there. Prompted by the receipt of an anonymous letter, the authorities searched Westminster Palace during the early hours of 5 November, and found Fawkes guarding the explosives. Over the next few days, he was questioned and tortured, and eventually he broke. Immediately before his execution on 31 January, Fawkes jumped from the scaffold where he was to be hanged and broke his neck, thus avoiding the agony of the drawing and quartering that followed.

Fawkes became synonymous with the Gunpowder Plot, which has been commemorated in England since 5 November 1605. His effigy is burned on a bonfire, often accompanied by a firework display.

So now you know.  Aren't you truly glad you asked? Smile, Wink & Grin

Found out last yesterday while driving past the Dartmouth Sportsplex that there is a Train Show next Sat./ Sun  Kris will do her store mooching while I take in the Show. Incidentally, she MADE me go to the LHS in Halifax yesterday - OK,I'll fess up, it was to get a clock movement for the clock/barometer set she was presented by the company she worked for in Edmonton when we moved down here to Nova Scotia!  I also picked up some small gauge airplane fuel line to make a ring spacer for her mother. Saw the idea trying to buy commercial spacers at Sears a few weeks ago. They were selling 4 different gauges of that tubing, cut into about ½ inch lengths, in a pack for over $7!!!!!!!!!!!!  So, I asked for the smallest amount the LHS would sell, and they gave me about 2 ½ inches FREE! Pays to be a loyal customer.

Here's a link the gun-loving amongst us may appreciate. I've tried to set it to open in new window, but it may not, be warned.  http://www.wimp.com/fastestgunman/

Getting on towards dinner time. Don't forget the clocks tonight.

Well I hate to say it but.........Its been snow flurrying all day!!!!!

Here's the sign/banner for the train show Jessica has been working on.  We went with the chalk board instead of the dry erase board.  Since I will be doing demos, why not a chalk board.

Evenin' folks.......... Opens door to the diner and limps in, sits down at the rivet counter....  Janie, Decaf coffee to start with, I'll figure out what I want for supper later.....

Oh. man, am I gonna be in trouble tomorrow morning when I try to get out of bed....  Just spent all day out at the museum cutting, splitting, and stacking wood.  I already have some back muscles talking back to me and can barely move my hands....  6 Hours of running chain saw and rolling rounds over to the splitter.  Two of us did several face cords today.  Well anyway, the wood pile is finished for the year, and the splitter is back home sitting on the trailer in my drive way.

Robby, I like the sign.  Good luck at the show!  Hope you sell out and have a lot of orders.

Beer....  Hm!  My favorite beer these days.  Samuel Adams and several other small New England Breweries.  However, I still prefer a good Finger Lakes Wine...... Smile, Wink & Grin

OK, if I can still stand up, I am ging to go light the wood stove as it is all of 35°F outside here...

Later!

Evening, Janie - just a go cup of hot cocoa, please. Thanks!

Wanted to stop by so you all wouldn't send the bloodhounds out lookin' for me. Been somewhat busy this week at w**k, and I'm on-call this weekend.

Like the new digs, and hey, guys, not to worry about the cooling - I understand (in true Arizona fashion) that Vinnie has got us a 'swamp cooler' arranged to keep the temps in here nice and comfy. Helps control the low humidity some, as well. My Dad had one for his house when he was living in the Phoenix area.

One nice thing about Arizona air is that, if you spill some beverage on your shirt and want to dry it out, just step outside the Diner for a dozen minutes or so, and it'll dry it up for you. Smile, Wink & Grin Of course, that's if a sandstorm doesn't come up on you. Wink

Got in my back issues of MR this week (still making my way through those, reading a bit at a time). Also got in the new Mac OS X version (for the 'puter that later this year, my brother dear will be sending me).

Last weekend I got the 'fairways' for my mini-golf course painted (one coat), but I'm thinking I either need another coat, or to break out the spray gun kit. Taking the paint off the fairway edges (where they have the (concrete) lips to keep your golf ball from rolling - well, easily, anyway - off of the course) went pretty well with the side of a #11 Xacto-type blade. Looked at the two Revell engine facility kits I have partially (or almost, in the one case) done, but didn't decide to get to those. Maybe I'm underwhelmed?... Whistling

About time for me to head out. Probably will be back in Monday, if I don't get in tomorrow afternoon.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Evening guys

DONT FORGET TO TURN BACK YOUR CLOCK AND HOUR TONIGHT - for those who turn clocks!!!!

WEnt to the Syracuse show. Lots of layouts there! of ALL sizes! and ALL powers! inlcuding live steam! adn an electric kiddy rider I think 7.5 inch guage size{??}

Other half got a 4 building street European Buildings kit. Other half has german mother and so grew up every other summer in Europe riding all the passenger trains- steam, diesel, and electric and has romanticized them to no end and wants them in Nscale. DOesn't really care for American locos ecept mayb ethe acellas and the "streamiliners" of older days. That's why I got the GG1 when it was mentioned as  an american favorite-will be  great xmas present as the same Kato GG1 WAS pointed at and drooled over at the show I had to steer away from that! Also saw the cutest little trolley bus by Kato that is modern day trolley I think for Portland. I agreed to liking it very much, but we really didn't have the $125 to spend on it. I got some new code 55 N scale track in a 12.5r to hopefully run the Pennsy passenger cars I got  form a forum member to give as xmas presents to go WITH the GG1!. I also got a few new truckmounted coupler sets to repalce the rapido couplers on the passenger cars as a trail. I had aslo ordered some from COn COr as they seemed to be theonly place I could find them online. I got two sets to try my hand at it. Questions were raised about them. but fortunately other half has other N scale passenger cars that have rapidos on them that I mentioned i wanted to try and change.

Other half also pointed out several trains sets in N scale of the Zephyr the auto-car-looking-silver-thingy {i hate it, but who am I?} and the daylight nscale sets all $200-$300 + for the sets. AFter seeing me going DCC on the HO, other half is now talking DCC for Nscale only from now on. Pointed out the sets were only DC and would be $500 with DCC IF THEY EVER MAKE THEM!

For myself I only got a used cheapy B&O Cupola caboose I have been looking for forever. It has horn hook couplers so I also got a set of KDs#5 to replace them with.I aslo got  a good {I hope } set of small screwdrivers...I seem to twist tehm on the cheapy sets, but this one cheapy too. I had my eye on two RR cars, but at $25 apiece, ANd with bills to pay, I decided that like the $125 trolley buses, I'd better not spend the money. I spent $30 on the new Nscale track for a simple loop as it was.

There weren't as many dealers as I thought there would be. Got a new Bachmann catalog that while other half doesn't seem to like USA trains, there was a lot of oohs and aahs and drooling over the catalog.

ROBBY P...there was a guy there with a single table of grafitti-d cars for sale. The were, I think, supposed to be weatherd a bit too, but they looked more  used and abused rather than newly weathered and graffiti-d. I thought "geee, I know someone who can do FAR BETTER than that!!! AS we passed by 3.5 hours later on the final walk around, it appeared he hadn't sold anything. I think i saw a price tag of $25. on one car, I wasn't really interested in them no where near your quality!!! {and I HATE graffiti!}

Tired as all get out and my back is SCREAMING at me for being on my feet so long! The pain killers definitely did NOT kill pain today!

WEll, I shall check out the rest of the forum adn then see about bedtime.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Well, got the 4x8 table removed, but turns out the "simple" task I thought this would be isn't so. So now it's either go with the benchwork config still as I had it for the plan (which would cause one of the main reasons I wanted this particular layout to not happen), or compromise with myself, go for a simpler, "smaller" design, and well, change the layout plan...AGAIN! now it's going to be a 2x8 with a small shoot-off on the side. Some of the operating interest will be gone, but the ANRR is back. all will be explained later; that is, if I go through with it. Ah, decisions, decisions.

DONT FORGET TO TURN BACK YOUR CLOCK AND HOUR TONIGHT - for those who turn clocks!!!!

Only one clock to turn back. It's an antique Westclox LED alarm clock I got way back when I was in the army. Amazing it still works after all these years. All the other clocks and even my watch (which I hardly ever wear) reset automatically.

Evenin' folks!

Flo a mug of decaf and a slice of the Blueberry pie with a double scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream if your please.

OK, OK, OK, the clocks have been turned back an hour already!!!  Too bad I can turn me back about 20 or so years.......  Finally got some straight medical facts for everyone....  A friend of mine who is a college professor (he is the guy I was wo*king with all day at the museum says he discusses "Cause and Effect" in his classes, he informs his students that, "It's very clear that drinking water is fatal.  Everyone who drinks water dies...."  So in the spirit of THAT idea here is some undisputable "truths" for you folks based on some medical facts.....  WhistlingLaugh

For  those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health.  It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

 2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

 3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

 4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans..

 5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Gute Nacht mien Freunde!
