Lunchtime!

Flo, make that a chili dog and a RBF for me, please!

The bill for the car repair was less than I´d figured, so I should be glad. Still a lot of $$$ from my MRR budget Crying

Hi, krump, and welcome back!

The day started out as nice day, but now it is overcast and "dull".

Have a good one!

 Mourning AZ

 Flo, Big Diet Dew please.

I had been keeping some odd hours of late, getting up at 4:30 to 5:30 AM for sometime now. But withis the time change I was up at 3:30 today?

Morgan I used RTS 8.0 to draw the garage with, each square is 1 foot if that helps.

Ulrich The door on the right is the biggest problem in my mind. Now personally I would not mind if that door was blocked. I could use the family room door to get into the garage. It is all so goes to the patio and is only 2 feet from the rear garage door. But, I am pretty sure Sue would throw a fit if I closed that door off.

I am not in a hurry so both you and Morgan take all the time you need. Plus I do enjoy playing around with the RTS as well.

Think I will play with the plan now my self, will try smaller turns.

                 See You All Later.

 Good cool morning.

I've been debating to get two more cars for the train show.   So...........I guess I will make a trip to the LHS and get two more.   I was thinking about getting a 1903 wooden boxcar, and another 40' PRR boxcar.   That will give me 26 cars.   I think that should be enough.   I guess I will also do some rail-fanning while I'm out.

Come back home and give the dogs a bath, and clean up some.   So I have a busy day.

I will pop back in later!!

Morning guys

Welcome back  to Brakie and krump!!! SIt and stay a spell!

Boy did I ask a dumb question over on the DCC and electronics section. I have a blonde streak down the back of what's left of my sandy brown hair so I am entitled to a DUH! Blonde moment! Bang HeadI sorta figured the answer, but there had already been a reply so I couldn't take it back. Bang HeadOh well. Now I have a new question. probably just as dumb. SO I won't ask it. Maybe I beter before I blow something up. Nah, don't want to speak up and remove all doubt about one's dumbness.

Other half has dental appoint. ANd tomorrow we go to Elmira to wholesaletrains.com 's shop{whoo hoo though that is dangerous to me as I spend more in the store than i do online!!!} to look for a nice train station for our train nut friend. He didn't find anyting that he liked that fit his budget. There were only TWO train stations available at teh SYR show surprisingly enough adn neither was great one was well worn already assembled, the other was a massive station. we'd like to get him a  nice little country station {insert>cute< here} and maybe another building or two for him to play with, Right now he has to set up/tear down on dining room table. ANd it annoys the dogs when he runs trains, LOL. I can find new trucks for my HO caboose in the B&O livery I found with horn hook couplers, gonna need to saw off the coupler box cover I guees to insert new KD #5 though the hornhook is spring loaded so I maybget teh #148 whiskers KD if they have it. the trucks are also wobbley and shot on the caboose...but what do you want for $3? Didn't notice till I was home. I was jsut thankful I found a B&O coupula caboose I ahve been searching for I may ahve paid the man $25 for it!

Next train show is in early Jan here in Binghamton at Roberson Museum Center. THen THEN the BIG one in SPringfield Mass the end of January!!! Whoo HOO!! We should have some money by then!

Well I should go eat my waffles now...

Robby- 2 more cars couldn't hurt!!! ANd your selection of older cars may strike an early 20cent. modelers heart with absolute delight. Oh if you don't haven't already maybe take 8x10 glossies of the REAL RR cars you modeled your weathered cars on so they can see how much yours look like the real thing! {can you tell which is real and which is memorex?}

Well, later guys

Good morning. It's 38 and sunny. The high will be 73.

Got a little work done on the layout yesterday. I put in 2 pieces of 2x4 under the edges of the park section to give it some support so it doesn't fall into the waiting jaws of the langoliers. I also pulled down more of the old wiring. Now that the wires are loose of their mooring points they now hang beneath the layout like a multi-colored spiderweb waiting to snare - what. The job now is to remove them and isolate the track wires. The wires that go to the outside rail have to be marked so I can connect them to the proper buss wires when I put them in. The buss wires will be green (outside) and white (inside) with the track feeder wires connected accordingly. I'm hoping to reduce the number of blocks to 7, so that means 14 lengths of buss wire. 16 gauge should be big enough for what I need. I still need to run down feeder wires for the new track that is in place now. I put the rest of the track for the new run in place last night. After I attach the feeders and solder the rail joints I can start securing the track in place.

Good Morning! Coffee please.

I too am in the middle of my layout reconstruction. Remember?

I too could be telling of my progress.

I too could be taking pictures of my progress.

I too could be building kits.

I too could be adding bench work.

I too could be wiring track.

But NOOOOO!!!

Working on the Laundry room and bathroom today. Sad

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Ken - I still have a hard time to identify the space you can actually use for layout. I am also worried about that door to the right.

I have marked the area, which think you could use, in your drawing. Is it correct?

The white squares are in my understanding "off limits" for a layout.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have one of those Breakfast Bagels w/ Cheese along with my Dark Rost Coffee in a FGLK Mug.

Last night was my son and my DIL's birthday party.  His MIL made some Delicious Home Made Lasagna (Some leftovers are in my refrigerator for supper tonight) and fro dessert we had 3 different choices, none of which was actually cake....  All were good as well (don't ask me how I know!).  Two of the three had candles placed in them so we could sign the song (twice).  The candles were the ones THAT you can't blow out.  So they had a lot of fun blowing out the candles, blowing out the candles, blowing out the candles, blowing out the candles, blowing out the candles.......................

On the way home I saw a rare night time train move in the yard on the FGLK.  They had a train THAT was a mile or so long, just sitting on the yard lead, and blocking all the RR crossings except one just beyond the yard lead in Geneva.  They rarely do major moves down there at night and have been doing some major work in the yard, so I'm wondering just what was going on.  I can tell you there were some unhappy motorists sitting in their cars waiting.............

Robby, be sure to show the 1920's boxcar here when you get it done!!!  A certain modeler who models 1925 wants to see it....Smile, Wink & Grin

Ulrich, glad the car repairs were less than you thought, but still a bummer I know.

Galaxy, have fun in Elmira, but don't blow the whole budget! Laugh

Well (deep subject a well), I have a whole day of Stuff to get done, so I best get moving!

Later!

Gooooooooooooooooood *ow ow ow* Mornin', bucket of coffee please...

Well (NOT a deep subject), operation Smooth Move, AKA: Project Ex-Lax, is all but complete. All THAT is left of the massive relocation of the bedroom is...the Wife has to move the bulk of her clothing. All of the heavy lifting, literally and figuratively speaking...is DONE.

And I am feeling it today.

Yesterday, we "saved big money" when we shopped at Menard's...or so I hope.

The Wife is happy...and that's what's really important...right? JIM seems to think so.

TODD: Glad you liked the shot of CNW 1302. What struck me, was the Zito yellow was still bright and "clean," but the rust was bursting through it, same with the green.

Here's another scuzz-bucket for your consideration:

ULRICH: I thought your "dishwater" comment was more a flavor thing... I had a German neighbor who referred to American beer as...well...the by-product of drinking beer...the reason God gave us urinals... He would pour down Budweiser like it was mere water, without any effect whatsoever. Good 'ole Hans...some days, I wonder what ever became of him. Good guy, great neighbor.

I s'pose I oughta start making phone calls/e-mails to line-up this week's assignments, for THAT Editor's newspapers... so off to w**k I go. A good, SAFE day to us all 'eh?

Chris - I would not go as far as Hans did in his comment, but I could also pour down loads of that stuff without having any effect on me. German beer seems to be much stronger. As the legal age in Germany was 16 in my days, I may have had some good training... Whistling

Ulrich That is pretty close to the spaces we have. We can infringe somewhat by the door on the right. Been playing with some ideas of my own as well.

Afternoon folks!

Let's see, Janie, I think i would like the Hot RB Sandwich, side order of onion rings, and a Dr. Pepper to tide me for a while.

Garry, actually there birthdays are about a week apart.  Son's is Oct. 28 and her's is Nov. 5th.  They just decided this year to do them both after the fact.

Well.... Chris, some wells are shallow.  The one we had on the farm when I was a kid was a dug well THAT was only 15' deep.....  Not "deep" at all.  But when my family and I lived in Oakfield, NY, we did have a well THAT was over 300' deep drilled in our front yard.  THAT I think was deep for around this part of the country.  So....  Well. (a deep subject.... at times....) Smile, Wink & GrinLaugh

Went down to the layout room this morning and found I had another little mousie visitor down there.  I say "had" because it found the peanut butter baited trap.......  It has been disposed of.  Trap is rebaited and set. Mischief

I also did a load of wash and a bit of w*rk on the Stone crusher building.  I'll have picts soon.  This is one of those projects THAT is changing as it goes due to space issues, etc.

Later!

 LUNCH!!

Well I went to the LHS to get some older cars but they were gone.   I did get a couple of 1950 cars, and that should do it for me.  That will give me 26 total.    I probably won't start on them till tomorrow thou.

Ken: Not really, no. Photoshop compresses the image smaller than what it is in RTS, so some stretching will still be required.

I may steal Madogs though and tweak some. You'll have to get to that pesky breaker box though too...

Whistling

Good Afternoon Gang,

Well I find myself back in Spokane visiting my Son for a week.  The first 470 miles were just like summer, the next 500 it was raining all the way.  Today it is about 36 F and drizzling actually feels like there could be some snow up there.

I am late for lunch, but still need some vitals.  Chloe if you have  a minute,  I would like to have a bowl of potatoe soup and a BLT. I'll chase that with an RC cola. Haven't had one of them in a very long time.

I plan on hitting Sunset junction (LHS) and a couple of other spots, mainly just looking as I really don't need anything right now, but will probably pick something up. Tomorrow night I plan on getting to a MMR club for a short visit. I'll keep you posted on that. Would love to get down into the Tri-Cities area and visit with Joel and Teressa at T-J Model trains. Both Jim at Sunset and Joel & Teressa are absolutely the finest people you can meet.

KEN,  I too learned some time ago that the last thing a person needs to get tangled up with is Norton or McAfee.   That is just asking for trouble and so difficult to get rid of all of their components.

JERRY,  I like your most recent pictures  of the I.S. and also that Monon unit. They were sure classy weren't they ?

DerJohn, Your scratch building is wonderful and hope to get my skills to come close to yours. Glad too hear you dodged the bullet with that last storm.

JEFF,  I like and approve of the changes you are making. It will be so much easier for you to work on the layout.  I have had second thoughts about the size of my layout and at my age and with other interests if I have enough time for that project. But seeing that all the benchwork is done and some of the landforms I think I will just continue on with it. I do believe that I should quit work completely and put more time on it. I have just  turned 70 a couple of days ago and have retired four times already, so maybe I should do it for keeps this time. If I stay working I have promised myself it will only be for two more years. That's the limit, but I will continue to assess that time frame. I have lost about a year on it after the mess we got into having the south side of our home Mud Jacked and having the floor blown out. But others have had similar with fires and floods etc.

Ulrich, Glad the interview went well and hope you hear good news very soon. And also that the Car is ready to take you to work.

It has been awhile since Keith checked in. I wonder what he is up to.  Still no Fergie or Ed (OJ) either..

Congratulations to the boys with the new Driver's Licenses.  It was a very long time ago for me, but I still remember the feeling, and that is after 2.5 million miles with Greyhound and another 2 million with the Trucking, Ambulance, Tour Buses, and personal miles. Always remember to drive defensively, be ready to react as if the other guys are going to do the wrong thing.  Happy & Safe Trails..............

All the rest of you guys,  Always interested in whats going on with you and wish you all well with the various plans, awards and train shows that you have in the works.

We just had finished walking the dogs (3) and my wife has started making some homemade chicken soup while I've been writing this. Now she is giving me the (eye) as I think she wants to get out and about. So I'll sign off for now.

Health and Best Wishes to all.

Johnboy: When I built my previous layout I had thought that it would be my last for a long while. But life got in the way. My arthritis and my bone problems have gotten so bad that it was becoming harder and harder to get under the layout to get to an access hole. Something had to be done. I finally got the middle section cut out so I have a walk in area. That was the hard part. I'm working on the wiring now. In fact I've started on hanging the first of the buss wires. In the past I used hooks to support the wires. This time I'm using RG-6 coaxial clamps. The wire will be held up and will be able to move around somewhat but it won't be able to come out of the clamp. I was having that problem with the hooks.

Afternoon all.

When I got home today, I had an email from Atlas (THAT was fast!). They asked for my address, so they're going to send me a replacement part. I'm happy now! Cool

Welcome to the Diner, Krump!

It's ok, Todd, the list of other stuff will (hopefully) end. Eventually.

Well, I better get back to homework. I'll be in the corner booth if anyone would be kind enough to come over and talk to distract me.

I've got the green (outside rail) buss wire strung and hung and some of the outer rail feed wires are already connected to it. Now I'll get some rest and get my nerves back together. After that I'll get the white (inside rail) buss wire strung.

Don't have much going on. FINALLY we are finished with the Scarlet Letter in english. now tomorrow we have our wrap=up discussion, wednesday we have an inner-outer circle discussion, and then thursday we have a test. To top it off we have a paper due a week from today that was assigned midway through the book. Guess what I'm working on tomorrow?
Did I mention I hate this book?
Ok, done venting, now to improve my attitude and attack this paper head-on tomorrow.

Flo, just a Beer, wife made chili and I am stuffed.

Picked up a few books by John Armstrong today and they have opened my eyes. As I was skimming through the book this statement hit home. "But using too big of radius may result in a poorer plan if you are fitting a pike into a spaces that has been established by some higher authority (such as the rest of the family) as all that will ever be available. There will be too little straights track and general scheme may have been simplified to the point of being uninteresting just to get broad curves into a limited spaces. Insurances is prudent investment, but you can go broke by buying to much of it, broad curves are somewhat the same. It is from Mr Armstrong book The Classic Layout Designs.

I have all so been the one that championed the fact bigger engines can make it around smaller turns. So I am thinking no bigger than 32 inch and only on outer turns that will be highly visible. I do want to go no smaller than 24 on the two high speed mains. The two trunk lines can go down to 22.

Other book I got my Mt Armstrong is The Model Railroad Track Plan Book. It has several layouts for larger areas and couple have tickled my fancy. As soon as I figure out how to uses the scanner I will post some pictures

 See you all later.

Hey guys

Looks like I fell behind

Busy day today. Right after work I had to drive to destin for a dr. appointment, then to the tax collector's office to get papers to transfer the 90 for sale. Got it sold and now have 2,000 in my pocket.Big Smile

Went to a trainshow yesterday. Picked up a white SPFE 57' reefer, B&O (Chessie) waffle box, and an MKT PS hopper. all athearn. The MKT hopper is a bit of a project. someone glued the ends to the bottom but didn't make sure they were contacting the car body. tried to remove an end and it broke. A stirrup is also broke, but I might be able to the car fix it without buying anything.

Also snagged some detail parts. 2 smokey Valley GP9B handrail kits (he didn't have straight GP9 ones, and I think a GP9B one would give me extra stanchions), a pair of DA underframe bells, an AMB window kit for an athearn SD40-2, 2 sets of warren customs services coupler plates (one set broke when I tried to fit them on a unit) a pack of DW firecracker antennaes, and a few other pieces.

I'll be catching up in the back

Ken, check your "conversations"/PMs

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Well, another day gone by. Didn't do much. WEnt with my better half to the dentist, fine checkup and cleaning.

Tired with a mild migraine.

Then I asked another dumb question over on DCC forum.Bang Head

Stop over to my "what new product would you like to see?" thread here on the genreal forum and tell us what new product {no locos} you would like to see sold or invented for MRRing in three different topic categories. I don't know maybe that's a dumb question tooBang Head. I know everybody wants certain locos in their favorite livery, but this is for the "other stuff" in MRRing you would like to see.

Well {deep subject that actually holds water}, I suppose I should get ready for bed now.

Evenin' folks!

Flo just a decaf for me tonight.  I'll go sit in the back and chat for a while.

Galaxy, good to hear the wife had no problems at the dentist.  Hope your migraine is gone in the morning.  Remember there are no stupid questions!  I've seen some stupid answers though......Whistling

Jeffrey, hope the wiring goes smoothly for you.

I have a six month check up at the Dr. tomorrow myself....  Sure hope I hear some good news there!

Got the lawn done for the last time this year!!! Thumbs Up  Mower is set away until next March When it comes out for Spring duty.....  I don't ever remember a year where I had to mow as often as I did this year.  I need to get the log splitter's oil changed and ready for winter as well.  I think it will be easiest to change the oil while it is still on the trailer, so THAT may be on the schedule for tomorrow after the Drs. Appt.  I also need to get the new NMRA sign and Info display done in the next couple of days.  Looks like I will be at an operating session in the Southern Tier all day on Friday, so I best plan out how I will get everything done for Sunday's Train Show in Batavia.

Got a little more done on the Stone crusher building today as well.  I think it will turn out well enough to be seen on the layout....Laugh

Later!

Good evening. Nothing for me thanks. Just had some beef stew. Big SmileThumbs Up

Well, (deep subject for a shallow mind (snicker)  ( I’ve always wanted to say that ever since Ray started saying it. That’s the way I always heard/said it. Didn’t want him to think I was refering to him though. Ray is FAR from a shallow mind.)), no more flooring needs to be laid…., lain…..,put down. The flooring is done. No it’s not. I still need to finish grouting. The walls are painted in the laundry and bath. Next is trim, closet shelving, toilet reinstall, sink reinstall and…….I’m sure something else will show up. Always does.

Galaxy- I agree with Garry. No stupid questions. Stupid answers, but no stupid questions. At the risk of starting a rant, I find it annoying at the responses some give to questions they deem not worth answering. If they don’t want to answer why do they? Makes no sense. If you knew the answer you wouldn’t have asked. I didn’t go to the thread because I didn’t want to be tempted to respond to some of the responses. As Jeff has told me several times. Don’t let ‘em get to you and don’t feed ‘em. Still. I thought a forum was a place to ask questions. I guess there is a one time question limit in some peoples minds. They don’t seem to mid the endless end of hobby posts. Or the Kalmbach going out of business because the mag is thinner or late threads. Or….

Oh. Hi Vinnie. I’ll shut up now.Embarrassed

Johnboy- It seems a bigHappy B-Day is in order.

Ken- I have not read Mr Armstrongs book but, at the risk of raising the blood pressure of the few hardcore prototypicalists, (yup, that got a red squiggly line under it) hanging outside the diner, I found out that I agree by my own experience. I would rather have a car hang over the inside curve, than have very little straight. It makes for an un interesting layout and very difficult to scenic with buildings in MY opinion. If you have the space, sure. But sometimes we don’t have a space like Rod Stewart. Shoot, even he has limitations.

4.5 million miles? Why that’s just a short jaunt. I’VE driven 16 million miles in just the last two years alone. Not counting the time I was a famous race car dri….

Oh, Hi Vinnie. I best get a move on.

There’s some chocolate cake on the counter and some Vaniller ice cream in the freezer calling my name. Maybe I’ll indulge.

cudaken

                     Ken.

The original I posted hung between 34 and 26 radius anyway, and favored 32 and 30, so we can do that

Good Morning,

we are up early, as Petra will be off to another go on her "freebie" teaching. She spends so much time in preparing the classes that I start to feel neglected Smile, Wink & Grin

Zoe, coffee in a D&RGW mug please, and a breakfast bagel to munch on.

Ken - John Armstrong is certainly one of the "big guys" in MRRing, but I don´t fully subscribe to all of his statements. The layouts of his era were loaded with track - not much unlike the often cited "spaghetti bowl". My personal guru is Lance Mindheim, who said "The more you know about railroad operation, the less track your layout requires". You know, I am more of a minimalist when it comes to designing layouts and I prefer to plan a layout with scenery in mind, rather than trying to put the scenery in the "open" spaces in between the track. I also prefer to operate trains in a close to prototypical manner, instead of watching trains just run, which tends to get boring after a little while. Even big layouts, like Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, had problems in catching the visitors´ attention, although they run a zillion of trains. They have added a lot of "action" items and gimmicks to their layout to overcome this. My personal view is that action is no substitute for operation.

Just a few views, nothing personal at all only food for thought! I am glad if I can assist you infinding your "ultimate" track plan.
