 Good Morning Folks,

well, back again. That spell of dizziness, which started out on Sunday, kept me away from almost anything during the last days. Despite drinking a lot, I was completely dehydrated and had to be "on the bag" for three days.

No, Zoe, no coffee in a IV bag today, a regular mug will do. Thank you.

The current heat wave in Germany is starting to take its toll. Remember, in our country, A/C is widely unknown (and most of the time not necessary). Hundreds of people suffered from severe dehydration after a failure of the A/C in our ICE trains.  No wonder - temps ran up to 160 F in those trains - and you cannot open a window!

Glad to see, that Jerry is back! And a big Sign - Welcome to Allegheny 2-6-6-6!

Have a good one ....

Home and no MRR stuff today. Nope didn't win the loco either, but didn't really expect too. Surprised though it only brought about 66 United States dollars.

Welcome Allegheny, good to see you. Sorry about your friend, it's tough I know. At least he will live on in his Grandson. Let's hope he calls on you soon, that way you can help him remember his pop pop and you can remember your friend at the same time.

Stories about Snickerdoodles and what you call them, reminds me of BBQ. Most everywhere else, BBQ is a way of cooking and the meat that is cooked in that fashion. Hhere it's meat with sauce on it, even if it is cooked on the stove in a pot.Confused

Well, I think I'll pass on the carbonated water with natural and artificial flavors featuring high fructose corn syrup, what we all DR Pepper, and hit the hay.

Prayers for those in need.

Good morning. It's 75 and mostly sunny. The high will be 94 and it will be mostly cloudy.

My EMD 567 did come in yesterday after all. Seems the postal tracker was running behind a bit. Now I'm just waiting on the pair of GP7's to arrive which I hope will be no later than Saturday. Today will be uneventful with the exception of a visit to the docs office this morning, a follow-up visit on my colonoscopy. I may get more work done on the layout later today.

 Mornin all,

Your right not a bad joint you all got here. Extra large coffee and an order of toast please.

A couple of things on my agenda to day. Waiting  on a box of Homabed form California roadbed company that should have been here two weeks a go but got damaged by UPS some how. Would you believe water damage? I said nice try being it hadn't rained here in the north east for weeks........lol.

But here is where I might need the help of some of you old fellow country boys, well seems like we have an over abundance of groundhogs here at the Ponderosa and to date I have trapped near a dozen of them and sent em off to the happy hunting ground. Well there is one big old SOB left. He's got to be the granddaddy of the whole clan and he's a slick one. I use caned peaches or canned fruit in the traps and normally they can't resist but this sucker will get up next to the trap and sniff at it and I've actually seen him up on his hind legs with his front paws on the top of the cage. Well a few days back I go check my trap and see the container of fruit is empty, cleaned out but the trap isn't sprung and it's exactly where I put it.. I'll be darned if I can figure out how he pulled that one off. So afterward the little varmint is thumbing his nose at me so to speak by coming out and watching me mow the yard and standing up on his back legs watching me as to say here I am and you can't catch me ha ha,danged little rotten critter.  So if any of you got ways of catching these little suckers I'm all ears.

Just my 2 cents worth, I spent the rest on trains. If you choked a Smurf what color would he turn?

 Good Afternoon Folks,

we had a little  ra*n, but it did not cool down much. Now it is all sticky and my blood pressure is playing roller coaster. Or is it just because I have received some more turn-downs to my job applications? I guess it is that one too many today!

Took a snooze around mid-day and had this crazy dream of a piece of land with my name on it. Somewhere in the mountains, right beside a lake, a little log cabin on it. A breeze of cool, fresh air filled my lungs - why did I have to wake up?

This morning, Petra and I were pushing furniture around in the designated train room. It looks much nicer now and leaves me with a little bit more room to build a layout, if ... Confused.  It is no fun, being condemned to armchairing and making plans for day "X", when things have turned to the better, which I don´t see to happen anymore.

Sorry, folks, for being so negative, but I am at the end of my wits.

Allegheny 2-6-6-6 - have mercy with that poor little creature. I know, that all these potholes are a PITA, but the little sucker is also one of God´s children, like you and me!

Morning. Lots to do today before work. High of 90 with heat index of 100. Tomorrow will be hotter.

Ulrich- It's very easy to get dehydrated even drinking fluids as you said, your body can't absorb the liquid as fast as it can get rid of it. If you are not accustomed to the heat, you are a prime candidate. I hope you get feeling better and drink whether you are thirsty or not. Feeling thirsty is too late in constant heat circumstances. Drink to keep from getting thirsty. Make sure you have some salt intake also. We used to have some quart per hour formula and so much salt or salt tablet formula which I forget now, but just suffice it to say watch your pee. If you're peeing fairly clear and are making normal to more often than normal trips to the latrine, or tree, back of shed or in Ray's case, the garden, you should be ok. Generally speaking.

Robby- Hope you have fun today. I think I would enjoy Kennyworld more than say Six Flags. The local owner type parks seem to have more charm to them.

Not surprising, but just the replacing of the last legs, surpised it runs, distributor cap, rotor and plugs, didn't fix the truck. I didn't replace them, but I did get the call saying it didn't work. They also said they found a vacuum leak. It must have at least run or they couldn't have found that. Anyway, I'm requested to return and take another gander. I've too much on my plate with re doing Mom's house to be spending time diagnosing someones vehicle so they don't have top pay someone. How'd they put it? Oh yeah,  " We'll do the work, you don't have too. If you could just tell us what's wrong we'll take it form there. We just don't want to have to pay a mechanic to do something we can do." Business owners...what's wrong with that. With friends like that, you see what I end up doing in my free time. They hunt you down, find your free fifteen minutes, ask you to do something, if it takes too much then they get upset because you won't rearrange your life and cost you time and money so they don't have top spend anything or be inconvenienced. Sorry, unexpected rant there. It's over.

Well, since Jeff's "follow up to my colonoscopy" kinda made me squinch up my face at the thought of just how exciting that may be...... I think I'll do what I should do and get busy with my day.

Have a Great Day!!!

Allegheny- Catch it? Never tried. Seems like a silly idea to me. They just find there way back like the little slightly altered stories we tell our wives to get out of immediate trouble. But, I do have a few ideas all of which work, some are better than others but from experience all work.

Dynamite. It works wonders. I know Ulrich will disapprove, but he's probably never had groundhogs move in.

Rifle, he'll never expect that one. Make sure it's larger than a .22 though. They charge when they're wounded.

Gas him. When you know he's in his hole, if you know which one, stick one end of a large hose on the tailpipe of your truck or car or garden tractor, and the other end in the hole. Hopefully he comes out and......POW! Tricky part is if he doesn't. You have to be sure he's overcome before you try to get him out. If'n he ain't dead or at least unconcious.... whoo boy are you in for a whoopin tussle. Do they ever come out swinging when they're cornered.

Morning everybody,

Todd: When I was a kid, we had two great family run amusement parks in Pittsburgh. Kennywood and West View Park. West View went belly up a number of years ago and today is shopping center. Although it still retains a lot of the virtues of a family run park, I'm fairly certain Kennywood was sold a couple of years ago to a Spanish concern who own & operate a number of amusement parks. It will be interesting to see how much Kennywood changes over the next few years. I guess the past is gone forever.

Groundhogs. Nasty little creatures and very aggresive. We had a lot of problems with them coming into the fire house where they would chew on the wiring and hoses on the trucks. Did the same thing to our personal cars when we were allowed to drive up the taxiway and park at the station. Nothing worse than coming out of the station to go home after a 10, 14, or 24 hour shift, only to find all the coolant that was in your car was now in a big puddle underneath it.

Yesterday I finished putting on the grab irons, railings and other detail parts on a Kato SD38-2. I surprised myself by doing a nice job of it for a change. No broken or lost parts. Of course, a windshield wiper and a couple of mu hoses did take flight in an attempt to ruin my day. However, a tip I read on this or another forum worked great in their recovery. I placed a piece of nylon stocking over the end of a vacumn cleaner hose and recovered them in a timely fashion. I probably won't buy anymore locomotives like this again though. My hands aren't steady enough and my eyes don't seem to work like they use to. Thank goodness for the built-ups. And my admiration to those who scratch built and kit bash. Wish I had the talant.

Have a good one.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the #2 special, over easy on the eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sourdough toast to go along with my dark roast in a R&GV Mug.  Please and Thank You! I'll go sit with Ulrich at the Rivet Counter....

Took a snooze around mid-day and had this crazy dream of a piece of land with my name on it. Somewhere in the mountains, right beside a lake, a little log cabin on it. A breeze of cool, fresh air filled my lungs - why did I have to wake up?

Sounds like one of those expensive resort villages up in the Adirondacks.....  Way too expensive!  Just remember what W. C. Fields once said, "A rich man is nothing but a poor man with money!"  He also said that the best cure for insomnia is to get a lot of sleep......  Hope you get feeling better...  And don't drink too much water.  I keep thinking about all the disgusting things that fish do in it......... WhistlingShock

I have a few "must do's" to get done today.  Have to drive to Canandaigua to buy a small spool of thread so i can sew on the new Council Strip (for our new council) onto my Scout Uniform for the ceremony Friday, then finish mowing the lawn, pick up a bag of food and a case of canned food for the kitties....

Catch you all later.

Good Morning All,

Off to Pittsburgh in a few. temps in the mid 90's and thunderboomers on the way. Just have to figure out what route I take as my usual through Butler seems to be under construction. Maybe I'll use that new road through State College I think it's parrallal to 220 and 99 then on to 22 for the rest up to Monroe.

Ulrich - I have to agree with the others I'm afraid. Gophers, possums, and raccoons are classified as varmints for a reason. They do incredible damage to crops and most farmers simply remove them using Mr. Remington. My CFO used to pull varmint duty when she lived on the farm and had to stand watch up in the loft overlooking the vegetable patch. We live in a more urban area and live and let live now, but when it's you or it, something has to give.

Well it's time to take my box of Cinnamon sugar cookies and water and head out. Catch Y'all later, J.R.

As we don´t have groundhogs in Germany, it is quite difficult to tell how much damage they can cause Big Smile. All we have is moles, and they are protected Dead . For all the wits that SOB has developed over the years, it deserves a second chance, don´t you agree?

Ray, the place I was dreaming of was in no way an expensive mountain resort place, more of the opposite. Think of the Alaskan or Canadian wilderness, with crystal clear lakes, and, the best of it, hardly any people. I am starting to develop a strong dislike for people - maybe because we just have too many of them around in our small country.

Made a list of all our "valuables" - if we´d sell all our belongings, we may be able to make $ 15,000 out of it. Very little after 30 years of hard work  and not enough to start all anew somewhere in a friendlier place of the world.

Or if you REALLY want to have some fun get an old surplus army uniform, a springfield sniper, paint your face camo, go out to the tree in the middle of your field (a deer stand will suffice) and listen and snipe hehehe

ok, it may be overboard but everyone should have some fun at least once.

Hello everybody ..

Just returned from Nashville, TN. My apointments at Vanderbilt Hospital Clinic went well, and I'm glad.

Welcome to Allgheny 2-6-6-6 !

Near Vanderbilt University is the Nashville Parthanon and the NC&StL 4-8-4. Just rememebr the NC&StL 4-8-4 is called a "Dixie" and not a "Northern".

I tok these photos after my appointments yesterday.

TMarsh I like the way you think well I didn't want to come right out and say how politically incorrect I am but of course I shoot the little suckers. I just don't have time to sit in my snipers perch wearing my gillie suit all day especially in this heat. So when one of those rodents  makes his was into the trap I give him a lead head ache. They are nasty mean varmints one tried to attack my wife's dog when it was a little pup but the German Shepard old Clyde made short work of him.

After reading some of your suggestions I have this image of Bill Murry as Carl the greens keep from Caty Shack. If a little C4 is good then a lot must be better right?

Sorry Ulrich but when i was younger we lost a horse because she broke her leg in a groundhog hole that ain't ever gonna happen again. I'll be sure to let you all know how I do with my battle with Mr. Gopher and I promise he won't wind up here as the blue plate special.

Allegheny: Sounds like you have a professor there that knows how to avoid the trip string of the trap. You need a live trap that's triggered by weight. When the little (expletive removed) steps into the trap it's weight trips the trap. My father used to use such traps to live trap possum and squirrels.

While I was in town this morning I stopped off at Lowe's and picked up a few items. #1 - A set of mini-tips for my Shop-Vac, 6 in all. The adapter from the hose to the mini-tip connector, a 1 1/4" wide oval brush, a 1/2" micro crevice tool - handy for getting between closely spaced items, a 45 degree extension tube, a 1/2" wide round brush and a 5" straight extension tube. Cost $12.97. #2 - A 1/2 pint of mis-tinted paint that's a nice medium muddy brown. Cost 50 cents. #3 - A 1/2 pint of mis-tinted paint that's a dark granite color. Cost $1.

 "Good" afternoon everybody...

Welp, first things first. Hello ALLEGHENY! Nice to have you here. I too had visions of "Carl" and "Mr. Gopher." Sick minds think alike 'eh? Smile,Wink, & Grin And, ULRICH: Sorry Pally, I'm also in the dispatch the varmints to the great meadow in the sky crowd. Little furry, four-legged critters are cute...out in a meadow far away from civilization. In the yard, in the house...they are a pesitlance to be delt with in as lethal a method as possible. We did battle with a crafty mouse this past winter/spring. His friend discovered how well glue traps w**k. Of course, it fell to me to terminate THAT mouse's exsistence. A solid "clomp" with a chunk of rail did the job...Dead The smart mouse however, would leave little..."calling cards" all along the edges of a glue trap. The little (explitive) also MOVED other traps THAT were set for him. Finally, the weather warmed up enough, he decided to go be somewhere else.

Also ULRICH: Sorry to hear of the latest troubles, and I'll echo the drink plenty sentiments. I'd heard you should "...be able to pee on command." If you can't, you need more fluid. And, I'm with you on the not being such a big fan of the human race. Most days, I'd rather spend the time with RERUN rather than 99% of the people I know...Evil

Was THAT you TOM? Who just finished putting grabs etc. on a locomotive? I'm with you. At 41 it's getting tougher to get small decals on straight, install grabs, and what-not. The cruel irony of it all: I'm finally in a position to build/paint/decal the stuff I wanted to build/paint/decal 20+ years ago...but now all the small stuff drives me bonkers.

Today's "must-do" list contains captions and a recap of last night's high school baseball game. The Iowa City West High School Trojans took the win over Cedar Rapids Xavier...sending the Men of Troy to the State Tournament next week in Des Moines. I also have to hammer-out a correction. I quoted a County Supervisor in an article, and he was dead wrong on something. The person in question called him and I on it. THAT wants me to do a correction for next week.

Silly me, I thought the SOB knew what he was talking about... Banged Head

Tomorrow will be weekly face-time, and a trip to Ft. Dodge to watch the Clear Creek Amana Clippers softball team play in either the Class 3A Championship or the 3A Championship Runner-Up (fighting for 3rd place). I'll find out this evening (they play in Semi-Final action at 4 today) which game/what time.

I'll yield the floor...mosey on over to the RC...and meditate upon my newspaperman sin: taking the words of a politician as accurate and informed. I can't even bad-mouth the politician...he and THAT are good, good, good friends. So, while he was 180 degrees wrong, and I quoted him direct, it still requires THAT I fall on the sword because I didn't double-check every word out of the politician's mouth.

Oh to just be a photographer...

ChrisEight Ball

BTW, what ever happened to...NiK n.?? I think he was the guy talking about Thunderbolt civil defense sirens some months back. I've met a lady who somehow oversees projects to replace them. IF he really wants to get one, she can probably get him in-touch with the right people. Seems she deals with "siren psychos" quite frequently... (HER term, NOT mine!!!!). She says all is well with "them" until "they" get the sirens restored and fire 'em up in the backyard...making the neighbors panic thinking either WW3 is starting, the local nuke plant has gone wonky, and/or the mother of all tornadoes is bearing down on them...Laugh

I just spent a half-hour battling an itty-bitty-microscopic micro-screw THAT holds the lid on the coupler box on a Bowser 100 ton hopper, a future ROCX car under lease to the CRANDIC. I thought I'd take a "mental break" from the correction and the ballgame write-up and do something enjoyable: w**k on a freight car project.

Now...I'm considering a shot of ETOH and playing with Mr. Sledgehammer.... Oh, THAT's right, Rerun went and hid the sledgehammer a few weeks ago.

Thank goodness it's "EMERGENCY! O'Clock" on TV...

I frequently have the same problem with the coupler pocket covers on Bachmann cars. Those itty bitty screws can be aggravating! Where's my magnetic screw driver when I need it. Never where it should be, that's where.

Yup, you know it! For some reason, they used what amounts to something you'd find in a pair of glasses. They used a more "normal" screw in the 70 ton.

Madness...it's sheer madness.

The Clear Creek Amana softball game just hit the airwaves, so I'll be listening to it while getting busy with W**K stuff.

Let the "fun" begin...

Those itty bitty screws can be aggravating!

Yup, you know it! For some reason, they used what amounts to something you'd find in a pair of glasses. They used a more "normal" screw in the 70 ton.

Madness...it's sheer madness

I think the dang person who decided what screws to use was a sadist. I like the screws on the coupler boxes here--I switched them---Mischief

I now have new glasses--which take a bit of getting used to again--had my others waaaaayyyy too long I guess....Whistling

Now little tiny London has a TigerDirect store--as of tomorrow I'm going to be able to get my computer parts and such without having to deal with deliveries and suchMischief

Chloe, I'll just have a coffee and a slice o' that pecan pie please--I'll be over at the RC for now

Any argument carried far enough will end up in Semantics--Hartz's law of rhetoric Emerald. Leemer and Southern The route of the Sceptre Express Barry

I just started my blog site...more stuff to come...

 Coffee refill, please.

***Allgheny 2-6-6-6, with horses & cows here, we would remove the little critters, too. Around here we have groundhogs & rabbits. Fortunately niether have made holes in our pastures. Haven't seen any groundhogs in ages and the rabbits live in the ravine on the other side of our fence, only grazing our pastures at night. Smart decision on their part.

***Ulrich, as a wildlife artist, I prefer to observe nature. I find no enjoyment in dispatching any living critters. That said, our horses & cows will ALWAYS come first. Although I choose not to hunt, the vast majority of my art buyers over the years have been hunters. I only wish that everyone who hunted would follow the rules. Around here, there are plenty of poachers (idiots) who kill everything that moves for no reason. I'd love to snipe their backsides, but it isn't worth risking prison.Mischief

****Jerry, glad your not in pain from the dental work.

Question: Which manufacture makes a good sectional small town/city sidewalk? We decided to remove all the sidewalks from the wife's models to create a more uniform look to the town. This will also make installing street lights easier. Recommendations appreciated.

Good Evening All,

Made Pittsburgh alright - staying right up the street from where TC took the CSX shot. Lots of traffic on the line which some don't like but I do,

Chris - if you get a chance, one of those hemostat thingies works wonders for holding little screws. The other alternative is one of those spike holding pliers ( i found a bargain set of needle nose pliers with a groove up and down as well as the usual serrations). neither were more than $5.at train shows.

Rob - I like the Bars Mills sidewalks. There are several others but I shopped price. Ultimately I did my own but they require a lot of w..k.

I'd like an RBF if you please and I'll just hang here for a bit at the rivet counter.  J.R.

Thanks for the suggestions JR, I've got a couple of hemostats around here somewhere... Maybe I'll take the Wife's glasses apart and practice with the screws holding them together....you know, to get the hang of using a hemostat on tiny screws... Whistling

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a hot fudge sundae and a Rio Grande mug of decaf, please. Thank you!

***Jim, are you going to recreate an AZ copper mine? A colorful open pit mine would be very cool on a layout.

While that's not a bad idea, Rob, I'm thinking smaller, a little bit larger than the mine that Malcom Furlow built for John Olson's "Jerome and Southwestern" layout. I'll have the New River Mine as a starting point, and I'm hoping to have some opening up the hill some, where mine carts and miners could be coming out. But it'll be a vanadium-uranium mine. That leaves me room for a joke or two about the late evening train run back down the mountain being one with "glow-in-the-dark" ore cars. Smile,Wink, & Grin There'll be a train that takes the ore cars around the Chuska Mountains to Farmington, NM where the government's buying agents are.

Chris, I was sorta recalling one photo you had posted with the firefighters practicing their 'hose techniques'... would that mean flat (afterward?) or half flat/half filled (loading up the hoses)? Oh, I showed Sarah and Andy (daughter and SIL, respectively) the firehouse building (and my kit of the ALF engine) when they dropped off my portrait proofs today. She went to her OB/GYN this morning (I think first time since she found out about grandbaby #2 being on the way).

Sarah said that Drew (#1grandson) has expressed interest in trains, so I asked about if he was old enough for them to get out the train set I'd given him earlier (before he was big enough to fully appreciate it). I also told her I was looking to get him an engineer's hat. - Got to get the wiring for the layout done!

Welp, got paged, so I'll take my coffee to go, please. Maybe back tomorrow.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Evenin' folks!

Flo I'll have a decaf and a slice of THAT pecan pie.  Huh?  Oooooo A scoop of vanilla ice cream would be great on it!

Busy day today....  drove up to Canandaigua this afternoon and it was closed.....  Got some gold colored  thread to sew the new Council Patch on my Boy Scout Uniform.  Then stopped and got cat food at the vets, and corn for supper tonight at a stand.  Mowed the rest of the lawn, did some weeding in the garden, and then headed out to a cub pack committee meeting.  Had to cut THAT one short to go over and help set up the Social Hall for the Eagle Dinner tomorrow night.  Just got back home...

I have disposed of my share of "varmints" as a farm boy way back when.  My dad taught me to do it quickly and cause little pain to the animal.  I don't hunt personally, but support most people who do.  It ultimately makes for a better environment for all the ones that do survive.  I have seen too many herds of deer around here where almost all of them starved to death over the winter.  Not a pretty sight.  THAT said, I prefer to shoot wildlife with my camera when possible.  Now mice, rats, and other vermin.....  They get the snap trap routine!  Fast and final.  WHACK!  Done.

I'm hoping Saturday I can spend some serious time in the train room.  Too many other things to deal with.

Chris....  Just remember what was said by the immortal W. C. Fields: "There comes a time in the affairs of man when he must take the bull by the tail and face the situation."  He also said, "Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people."

Hope you all have a good night!
