Been away for a few days and so I will say "Hello" to all and NOT try to read all I missed!
Went to Strasburg RR and the RR Museum of PA in Lancaster County PA.. Took a train nut fan friend of ours so it was a three-some of fun and frolic and Steam RR fun!
Bought a few things too and saw a few MORE things I would have liked to buy but had to watched the ol' budget. It cost $185 to have the Kia serviced and readied for a road trip so that took a bit of a bite out of spending money. Did well , and gas was relatively cheap and cheaper as we went.Shoulda started off with only half tank and filled up down there...lol.
Bought a Corning Glassworks hopper car like Robby P. posted pics of recently....{couldn't resist as Corning is so close to us and it wasn't at the Model shop in Horseheads right there at Corning}. Bought a Strasburg RR Passenger Car made by Roundhouse. Bought a couple hat pins, a T shirt, of course, and at the RR Museum bought a loco sparkly Xmas ornament, a Chessie Hat pin and bought the "Do Not Stand At Edge of Platform As You May Get Sucked Off " RailRoad Sign {Had to- at the urging of my other half who thought it was hysterical. It will go nicely with the "I got Lei'd" license plate I picked up in Hawaii was the explanation. Had to buy the License plate when we were in Hawaii- just had too, you know}
ALso bought a set of N scale Santa Fe shorty passengers and one open car passenger for my other half as a present....been looking for shorties for a tight radius "tourist line" to go up a hill to a castle for future layout. My other half practices the "it's my RR" clause and would really like the european trains seen as a child growing up every other summer in Germany with German mother's Mother {grandmother} and relatives, but A} they are easy to find in HO and Z scale here, not N which is what my other half wants- and/or to order directly from europe would be way too costly and B} there are no surviving-in-touch-with-the-family relatives alive over there anymore to send some. SO we settle for american stuff that approximates eruo-stuff. Once said a PRR GG1 would be an american electric "could deal with to pull passenger trains"...SO guess what my other half is getting for Xmas this year?? Thats right a PRR GG1 in Tuscan Red {fav color}. Made sure I took pics of the GG1 they have at the RRMuseum of PA to have blown up and posted on the wall over a layout? FOr $45 we could have gotten a blown up pic of the Tuscan Red GG1 at teh museum store and I thought on the way out we would get if we didn't spend more....well guess what? forgot it onthe way out.
Next year, we go to Strasburg again as a half way point to Cass RR in W VA. We want to see/ ride the heislers, shays and climaxes they run there. COuldn't quite afford to do so this year, and didnt plan long enough ahead to do so. Our RR buff friend would like to go with us too. {assuming we dont go back to Disney World with two other friends next year instead-then we go to Cass the year after}.
Well, I think off for a nap and rest from the trip. My back is {to borrow Jeffrey's phrase} hurling insults and swear words at me from the trip.

We have a stray cat trying to adopt us, and we don't want it. Teh cat brought his kill to the door here so he could demonstrate how he eats a baby rabbit. He ate virtually the entie little bunny including the brains out of its skull. ..... Anybody here want a free cat?

Good afternoon everybody.
We just got home a couple of hours ago from a little overnight junket. Started out by driving up to Conneaut, Ohio to the railroad museum. It's also a terrific place to watch CSX. No sooner did we get there and I saw lights coming. At first, I thought it was just an engine running light, but it turned out to be CSX GMS-1 inspection car. That was really neat as I've never seen one before. Next train to come by was powered by a CITX SD40-2 and a Dakota Minnesota & Eastern SD40-3. First time catching either of those as well.
After lunch we drove over to the railroad museum in North East, PA. It also sits on the CSX mainline with NS just beyond. Only interesting catch there was power on a NS mixed freight being comprised of 2 Union Pacific locomotives. One of the more interesting things they have on display in their yard is No. 802, a South Shore Railroad "Little Joe."
Late in the afternoon, we left and headed to the casino. The wife was able to play the slots for a couple of hours, which she really enjoys. She has very limited vision which curtails a lot of the things she used to do. Me, I had no luck at all. This was very disappointing because it meant I had to drive right past my LHS on the way home this morning without stopping.
I enjoy these little railfanning trips because I always meet a couple of really nice people. Speaking of nice people, just about all of the train crews we see at the different locations we like always give a wave, a little toot of the whistle or turn the bell on for a bit. So if any of you crew members are out there, thanks. I know that the big kids enjoy it as much as the little kids do.
Well, seeing as how I'm too tired, and it's too hot outside for any chores, I guess I'll take a nap. See you later.

Just finished the essay for my summer class. I can safely say Gordon Rule half session summer classses are the spawn of something from a hot underground place. I just hate writing essays with a passion. 2 essays of 1,000 words each in a six week class, du at the end of 4 weeks. At least it's the last one, and all the tests are takehomes.
Chris, They have good detail and usuaully have good running charecteristics. Tthey may exhbit the infamous "split gear" issue, but an athearn axle will work (Walthers will only give you a replacement if you have a reciept from being the original owner). From my experience they also need to be broke in a bit.

Sorry VINCENT, I can't offer much in the way of empathy on THAT one... a "typical" article for THAT is expected to be in the 700-800 word range. I can hit 1,000 to even 1,500 (THAT's limit, usually) on a good school board meeting. Yeah, I get paid for it, but it's not too difficult to crank out 700-1000 words on a topic. 2,000 words tops?? Piece of cake. Fun? Nope. THAT's why I'd really rather just be a shooter...let somebody else do the scriblin'. Just sayin', if THAT's the toughest part of your summer...yer probably doing pretty well. Also, thanks for the info on the geep...THAT's what I've been hearing about 'em (cracked gears/Athearn gears to replace, and break 'em in). Maybe in a few years, I'll be able to pick up a couple.
Well, tonight I get to: 1) update a softball article, 2) finish a 2nd softball article, 3) piece together a 3rd softball article, and 4) bang-out a new business feature on a deli in North Liberty. Funny place. It's "an art gallery with an eatery" as the owner says. Her mother "paints" and hangs these..."works of art" all over the place. Each one is signed and has a price tag next to it. Would you believe she asks $700 for a 24" x 18" canvas THAT looks like someone gave a handful of brushes and a dozen paint cans to a kid and said "have at it Junior!"??? I'm in the wrong business...
CN CHARILIE (I think,): Nope, haven't heard of THAT particular fire apparatus builder. I don't think we get much NOTB stuff around here. The only Canadian companies I'm aware of are/were(??) Thiabult and the LaFrance Foamite Corp., a subsidiary of American LaFrance...kinda like the Canadian EMD subsidiary of years past (GMD?). Then again, I'm in an area dominated by Pierce (Wisconsin), Alexis (Illinois), Smeal (Nebraska), and Toyne (Iowa).
In the "if'n I'd only known then what I know now" department... I picked up a CNW Iowa Division General Order/Special Order booklet from 1984 off of "theBay." I now have a much better idea of what the operations in Cedar Rapids were; how the CRANDIC, CNW, and ICG "shared" the 4th St. Corridor; and so much more. The booklet also has yard diagrams, some quite different from my previously oldest version (1986).
I missed out on seeing so much... factor in the operations back in the days of the IC, CNW, RI, MILW, WLO, and CRANDIC...all running along 4th St.; it's almost enough to make a guy....
Time to go back to w**k. Unless VINCENT is volunteering to write my articles for me... I'd best get to 'em!

I had to finish a 5,000 word report for work on implementing certain procedures recently. I can safely say that as not fun--especially after redoing 3 drafts before it made sense THEN having to spend about 4 days working up a powerpoint presentation----yay
Hello, we just had an almighty t'underin'boomer come through here--it left about 3/4's of an inch in 15 minutes and washed out our drainage ditch. We saw some wind as well as hail---walnut sized---so far no mention of twistie bits

howmusGot home and decided after a light supper to hook onto the wood splitter with the truck and pull it around to the other driveway where I have a small pile of wood. No sooner got THAT done and go back in the house than I look outside and there is a car sitting right at the corner with flashing blue lights, THAT was followed by a Fire Truck, and a good bunch of other Volunteer Fireman's vehicles. Twenty or so fireman start putting on all kinds of fire gear and then stand around in the road for a few minutes. One of them comes back out of the house across the street. Several go over and stand around talking for a bit more. The elderly lady who lives there hobbles out of the house and talks with one of them.... She goes back inside, and they all put away the fire gear and drive off..... She probably was boiling water on the stove and it set her alarm off... Life is back to normal (whatever THAT is).
Ray - Imagine the expression on peoples faces when a fire engine pulls up in front of a Target store w/ it's lights and siren on, have 2 guys out of 5 hop out and go inside while the other 3 just stand outside w/ 1/2 the gear on.... Some of those expressions were priceless the day that happened while I was volunteering back in 08

I just got back home from the museum so I need a cup of decaf to sooth me!
Got out there was just getting my camera ready to get some fine photos, and I get poked in the shoulder by a guy named Harold who had his radio on ready to do duty as the Conductor. He hands me the "official forms" for keeping count of riders and says, "Tag, your on duty! If they can tag me for conductor tonight, I can tag you for trainman/car host". So, I got to work train crew...... (Advantage being I can now claim mileage for going out to the museum....) I always enjoy working on the train anyway, so I was agreeable. We ran up and down the tracks about 6 times, which was the meeting for this month. I also helped with brake test, etc.
I did get a couple new shots of the Depot itself which I haven't looked at yet.
I went over to the Camera Shop near Seneca Falls this afternoon. Needed to get a new eye piece for my Digital Rebel and a spare battery for it. While I was there I asked about his price on a Canon 10 - 22mm lens for model use. he had a coupon for $50 off the lens which brought it down below any place else (that I trust anyway) for the lens. So, I had him order one for me. I won't probably pick it up until next month. So much for getting my credit card paid off.......

I have seen the police arrive at a Dunkin Donuts with the lights flashing.............. THAT was always a fun story to tell. Actually there was a problem inside and the cops did not exit the building with a bag of said donuts!

DerJohn - Sorry to hear of your loss. I do know the pain that comes with lossing a family pet as I had to put my dog down a little over a month ago.
Well gang, not alot to chat about tonight. So, I'm going to go surf teh HO Layout plans on here before I go to bed. Vikki (my loving, caring girlfriend) made a comment the other day about how she'd like us to ahve more storage space in the basement. Well, I have roughly 18 sqft locked up with just totes storing my train items. And in another corner of the basement, where the water and gas meters and lines are, is where I have my benchwork piled up. I figure that if I put up my benchwork, I should be able to free up at least 12 sqft of space for her. However, I have to figure out wherre the layout table would go before I can even set it up. Anyways.... enough on that subject.

Hiya JP, Rock Falls (technically Sterling/Rock Falls) is roughly 80 miles away to the east (straight shot down Hwy. 30). It's not too uncommon to pick up Whiteside County (Morrison, Sterling, Rock Falls) and Rock Island County during the summer months. If the conditions are just right, I'll pick up somewhere in Wisconsin. Other nights, Marshalltown (100 miles to the west) booms in loud and clear like my own Cedar County does. I still have no idea where "Rescue 34" is... Nobody in Jones, Linn, Cedar, or Clinton counties uses THAT designation. I don't think Muscatine County does either. There is a chance it could have been a Rock Island or Moline unit, but I didn't recognize the hospital they were enroute to. Quad Cities ambos usually go to a Genesis or Trinity facility (multiple hospitals for both).
To put this all into some perspective, most days I barely get anything out of Linn County (Cedar Rapids). They've got a tower 30 miles away, but I'll pick up Scott County (Bettendorf, Davenport, Blue Grass, Riverdale, Buffalo, Walcott) far, far better.

Hey, BARRY, was THAT you with the 5,000 word report??? THAT limits me to an absolute maximum of 1800 and, really likes 700-800 due to the attention span of the average reader... If you think about it, using 12-point type, single-spaced...1000 words only takes up 2 pages of regular paper.
THAT said, it's back to w**k I go. Got 2/3 of the softball stuff written, got the pics done for the deli/art gallery. I all but had THAT story written, in my head, on the way home from the interview. You think I can remember any of it now????? Yeah yeah, I know "you should've said it into the micro-recorder you carry for covering meetings." Yup...you mean the one THAT is sitting on my desk, under a pile of softball stats???

Evening, the Annual Stock Holders meeting went well. Won't get much for my patronage check, but better than nothing.
Did not get into the train room as hoped, maybe tomorrow, but I did get the light turned on and saw that the plaster is dry. Needs a bit of filler and I hope to do that tomorrow.
Looks like my daughter is going to move to Arizona. I am sad yet glad. She needs to get away from some of the folks that hang around her and she agrees and thinks this is the best also as they keep finding her like gnats. She will be moving with her biological Father and his wife. He has been transferred to the Phoenix area and wants her and the grandchild to go with. She will live with them and he will assist her with schooling if she wants until she get s a job and on her feet. I'm not near as concerned with her leaving knowing he will be there. This may be the break she needs.At least that's what I'm praying for.

the night was fairly cool, so I did find some sleep, Today is going to be a hot day again, with temps in the mid 90´s F. Our fire department has lots to do - quite a few grass fires from cars being parked "in the weeds" and, again, a small forest fire. We dearly need some rain, but there is not much in sight.
Flo, I´ll have a regular breakfast, with coffee, pancakes, sausages and scrambled eggs, please. There is one thing about that virtual food in here - you don´t gain weight (but you don´t lose any, either )
I have turned in my entry for that display layout and I hope, the guy does not shy away from the cost. Track, two trains, two powerpacks, the catenary and all those odds and ends for the scenery amount to about $ 400. He has not given a budget to me, so I have no idea, on how much he was figuring. So let´s wait and see!
Todd - I guess it is a good thing for your daughter and Anthony to relocate to Arizona, although I bet you will miss the two terribly. It is a good way for them to just literally leave all those bad things behind.
JP - building a layout to gain space? Howdyadothat? There must be some trick to it? Care to tell us, how to do it? I´d really like to find out, how I could "grow" our little flat by building a layout!
Other than the guy, who finally did not show up, there has been no interest in my Benz. It is still in a good shape and there is no need to sell it off at a ridiculously low price. The ad will be on-line for some more time, so it is one more wait and see for us. The proceeds from the car could help us getting a new start somewhere out of Germany. Petra has that Tania Blixen "Once upon a time, I had a farm in Africa" - theme in her head. She had spent a few months in Southafrica in her twenties and still has lotsa friends down there. My favorite place, however, would be the US or Canada

Recovering from my trip to Strasburg RR in southern PA, Lancaster county. My back is still mad at me, but not quite screaming insults or swear words, thank goodness.
I forgot to mention what was running at Strasburg on Tuesday when we went. I got so hooked up in telling y'all what i bought there that I plum forgot to tell you what engines were running. Number 89 2-6-0 and Number 90 2-10-0 which is my favorite. Number 90 has a raised boiler so all the undercarriage and workings are exposed, which I like to see. They run two trains for part of the day, alternating on the hour and half-hour for the 45 minute train ride to Paradise and near the main line of the Amtrak high speed tracks going to DC. There is a passing siding at Groff's Picnic area where they pass each other. We were not fortunate enouhg to see a high speed Amtrak go by as we have in the past. We were hoping we would for our steamtrain buff friend who went with us to see teh Amtrak go wizzing by..
We opted for the Rail Barron's pass which gave us 1 ride in the first class car; one ride in the dining car {where we had "brunch" of primerib on a sub roll with au jus, chips, soleslaw and tater chips}; the noon back shop tour; Admission to the RR museum of PA; and unlimited rides on the open-air cars, the Cagney mini steam train ride{which we declined to do} and more. It is well worth the $55 dollars for it, but you have to have separate tickets for each ride now. Before you only had to show your Barrons pass and they would punch it, now computerized, each ticket has a stub that taht is bar coded so you need one for every train ride.
Number 147 {?} was down for a 30 day inspection and mini-teardown. and their 4th loco was really torn down for her 1 year annual inspection, {thouhg they did have a listing on the back shop tour's chalk board of an engine listed in for its 1274 day teardown}. They were working on a couple of other locos for other RR's,{I think one was the 1274 day teardown} including a 3 foot guage for out west. They had a Boston and Maine passenger wooden car they were restoring with {gasp} Plastic beadboard siding, a new material they are trying. For those who are interested it takes aobut $300K to restore a passenger car and aobut $500-$1M for a loco.WHen they work on other's locos it can be years to do as the funding comes from the paying-to-restore-RR's as is comes in in bits and pieces as they raise the funds to do "$100K worth of work on it and see where that puts us".
Tuesday when we were there, it threatened rain, so we carried our mini umbrellas, which naturally kept the rain away and sunshine almost all day. It had rained on Monday so the cormfield maze at teh Amish farm across form Groffs picnic area was closed. And Wednesday when we left at about noon it was POURING rain cats and dogs style. We picked the best day to be there....though when steam locos are involved, is ther any such thing as a bad day?
Need to wash the van with an undercarriage wash to wash off the "horse puckies" in the road form the Amish buggies going by, or rather that we passed by.
Today we are set to go to Cooperstown to the Farmer's Living Museum. I don't know if my back can handle it so quickly, and we have a half chance of rain. Dunno if we will go, I would like to though there are no trains there...maybe a steam tractor or steam engines running.

Ulrich- I don't think $400 is too much. Of course I'm not paying for it either. Consider that is retail cost. My fingers are crossed for you!! Though I don't think a 1' X 3' T scale is what we were hoping for, it's a start. And a start is a start. Yes I will miss them, the daughter and Anthony, but it is the best. If she truly wants a new start, she needs to jump at this opportunity. Far away from her problems, at a distance even they would not expect her to trek to give them a ride or whatever. I'm sure there will still be contacts that are made at first trying to get her to return saying all sorts of stuff too, but they will cease as they move on and find someone else to mooch off of, but if she can stick it out for a bit I think she will be OK. I'm afraid she won't stay even though she says she wants too. She is a bit of a dependent on Mom and Grandma person and may use that as an excuse to return citing irreconcilable differences with her Dad and Step Mom. I have made very clear that we have been drained and there is no way we can dish out the cash anymore. No money for tickets or gas for movements back here, no money for tickets or gas to visit every time you turn around. And no way to support you if you do return. She will be as much, no, more on her own here as she is there. Just none of that group there. We will visit as money allows since we can travel through Texas.

We are at the point with Mom's house we may have to do some updating to keep from lowering to an extremely silly low price. People do not want to do anything to a house even if it means they will come out ahead. If they have to do anything at all they want it for a song. Can't say as I really blame them though. With some careful planning I think we can spend a reasonable amount of money to get the appeal to bring a fairly fair price. Perfect opportunity to make a house your home and come out ahead and no takers. I guess the housing market is going RTR also. Uh oh, didn't mean to bring THAT up.....

Good morning. It's 76 and mostly sunny. The high will be 98 and it will be mostly cloudy.Turned on the TV this morning and saw a report about an earthquake in Maryland. Bet those folks are awake. Looks like we MIGHT have some rain this weekend. Not much on the schedule for today. I have to go to the pharmacy later to get some refills on my meds but that's about it. Stayed in yesterday because of the heat. I'm surprised the grass is still green. I checked the progress of my order from Walther's this morning. My 567 prime mover shipped out yesterday. It should add a point of interest to the engine house.
Gooood morning everybody!!..I will take a breakfast sandwich with bacon and lots of melted cheese please and an order of hashbrowns...don't forget the coffee...extra regular please. It's a muggy start here in good old Syracuse with a few passing thunder boomers this morning. The Syracuse Nationals car show is in town for their annual meet and the weather should clear just in time for them. It makes this place look like 1950 exploded with all of the old cars and street rods cruising around...a few thousand of them at least. Some people have some serious coin invested in these machines. For me it's just a chance to drool over them and wonder where the heck I went wrong in life where I don't have an extra 50 grand laying around to buy one. Makes me regret the day I sold my 66 Chevelle that I had when I was younger...amazes me what a woman can do to ya!!! Haven't done much on the modeling front lately as it seems that every time I attempt it there is a birthday or graduation party to attend. Hopefully by next week I can get down in the basement and get to work. I am contemplating tearing down the current layout and building an around the walls shelf layout with a sizable yard. I am really starting to enjoy the switching atmosphere after running operations on friends layouts. I think I have worn out the continuous run saga and want to dig my heels into more operations and switch lists. Everyone have a good day and stay cool!!!

Oh, found a new hobby shop--guy has it in a house he bought for said purpose. On a main road near here. Looks promising--the guy is well stocked and has most everything needed to make up buildings and steamers----+ he has RTR as well

Ulrich - It's like this... In my basement, was a "homemade" set of shelves. All wood. About 12ft long, by 2.5ft deep each. I am using up about 5ft of each shelf to store my MRR items. In another corner, is all of the lumber for my layout. I put layout together, and it frees up the corner. And, it also means I can store all of the totes my MRR items are in under it. Which in turn, frees up all the shelf space I am using to store the MRR items!!!! Brilliant idea if you ask me... She gets the shelf space and I get a layout!!!

Jim the car i wish I still had is a 1956 VW Bug. My second car, it died at 237,000 miles on the first day of Spring back in 1969. It had one of those little tiny rear windows. It was all original equipment, the transmission decided to fail right as I pulled up to the mailbox by the house we were renting. I bought it for $275, put about 40,000 miles on it, and turned around and sold it for $75 to a guy who rebuilt it into a dune buggy......
Currently 76°F under cloudy skies here in the Finger Lakes. High will be around 83°F. Except for the humidity, it is a nice day with a chance of some more rain at times. At least I won't have to water the garden for a few more days.....
Oh! Fresh local sweet corn is officially in season here! Had a couple of ears last night for supper. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!! Tonight I will have the first zucchini out of my own garden. The season is underway!

As I'm slowly building my city, I am plaaning my streetcar line. There are some nice highly detailed streetcars available today, but the manufactirers stop there. I'm on my own when it comes to tracks in the streets and trolley wires. I found a good website however that will help figure out where I'm going with that. Meanhwile I'm laying about 100' of track for my Union Station, and I have several downtown buildings completed.

Todd ... I, too, have a daughter in AZ. We really like AZ, and are way overdue to go back out there. There are some neat train activities in AZ, too. We road the Grand Canyon train in the dome car. Also, we road the Verde Canyon train which was great. There were some good model tran stores in Phoenx area, too.

Got to watch my youngest granddaughter for about a half hour today. Granddaughter #1 had to have an x-ray to see why she hasn't gone #2 in a few days....... Hopefully it is just the "Training Syndrome" of her holding it. Son had to get to work, and his wife was at the hospital with the granddaughter.
