Hello Ken !!!!!!! Great to see you in the diner! You take care of that fever. You can put that Moutain Dew on my tab.

Everybody else: Ken was helpful to me when I was considering going to DCC. He phoned me with some good suggestions.

Ulrich ... I think you are correct about the grass is greener on the other side. I think some of our people are too eager to emulate Europe, and wish they would not do so.

Todd  ...Watch out for the crop dusters. At least its not Snoopy vs. the Red barron.

Howdy all~  Yeah.. its been some time.  In short.. well I guess I wasn't the only one laid up.  I'd guess it was a combination of Kidney infection,  also.. combined with a bad knee .. that the gait of my walk changed, messed up my back.. Zero time with the layout.  It all just piled up.  Way over my head on that one too. (layout)

But I am here anyways.. its been some time.. I've been reading up on the blogs here but never a time to sit and type, it has been that much of a 'build up'.  Today is the first sunny day.. well since I've been gone.  If that tells you how long I've missed the sun.  If we were lucky the sun burned off at 5 or 6 pm.  It rained one day.. the rest all cloudy, while the rest of the nation is in summertime conditions.  In fact the high it ever got was a cool 67 degrees.   Never any higher and I just seemed cold all the time.  I don't think I ever recovered from the camping trip two weeks ago or so.

As far as that hound dawg 'pup'.. well he's gotten so big,  I told my son... 'He'll never have a larger dog in his life'  This pup  weighs a whooping 45 lbs, runs rather clumsy.  All legs.

Chris.. so I go ask my son.. so tell me the story of the this dog you got at the shelter.  This is what he told me..

He went to the shelter .. seems everyone was there.. most of the young ladies were looking at the the females, my son came late..

And then I butt in and say..  "Lets see,  there is one pup by himself.. and the pup ran to you ... and you two were bonded."

"How'd you know?"  he asked ... lol.. "I've heard this story before, its called 'Rerun and the Angel'

  OH?"   "Ah nevermind.. go on~"

Seems this dawg and his brothers and sisters were taken to the shelter because.. the owner just didn't want to deal with the pups.  Brought them in too young.. and the pups were raised / nursed by a step mom (female dog whos litter had been gvien away)  at the shelter.  Then my son got the pup at slightly under two months.  A bit young, hardly the pup we have now.

Jeff.. wow nice pics on the cars with the WS powder.

Todd, wow.. you and Robby are leaving me in the dust.

As far as my layout is concerned.. well I've been placing cork down.. and thats about it.

Ok.. my back is hurting sitting up.. time to go.  I'll be back later.. maybe~

Bye Keith

Strong Italian roast coffee in a  UNION PACIFIC  mug, please.

A friend of mine (sweet older lady) who has been following progress on my layout, wants to be represented in the Trailer Park. I don't think she has ever seen the show it is based on. An old lady with a white poodle. Think I can manage this, as long as my wife doesn't mind. Better stick a firearm in her hand. My friend that is, not my wife.Laugh

And they workedConfused If you can't do, then teach I guess! Big Smile

Keith, big dogs are great, it is the little ones you have to watch out for.

I sure seem to be over what ever had hold of me. Getting ready to do some needed running. When I get back will speed match a B unit to it's A and then work on the back yard some more.

Now watch me get into the poison ivy again Cuda Ken.

Coffee refill, please.

***Ken, it doesn't look like your dogs like you very much.Smile,Wink, & Grin Happy looking group pic there. Getting into Poison Ivy s_cks! Best to be avoided. Hey, got a kick out of your rust comment. As long as it isn't in my own joints, it doesn't bother me much.

Been thinking of the easiest way to add sound to my wife's Atlas GE U30B loco. Buy one with it already installed, swap out shells, then sell off the left old unit. Any reason this wouldn't work? I really don't want to mess with trying to add DCC & sound to an older unit.

Ken, I love dogs and that is one big big dawg... lol.  I don't think this pup will be that big~ but its going to be tall, its all legs.  And the white one in the back?  A Husky?  Wow.

Our 'yapper' bit the pup on the nose,  he came to me.. I actually licked his wounds (no blood) yep  .. bonding.  Its important.  Speaking of the yapper and the forth of July,  there was no peace for most of the animals.  The sounds of fireworks going off.. was a real battle for the yapper.  The cats ran and hid anywhere from lower cupboards to the garage.  But the Yapper found no peace .. the only place was my lap.  She didn't want to be with Jeanne.. oh no.. gotta be with 'daddy'.~

A morning thing with the Husky.  She makes sure everything is safe before he darts out.

The pups hind leg in motion, seconds before this, he was running, then stopped, now he's sec's away from bolting.

I did tell you guys the story of when I had a kidney stone... Pain~  My last words to Jeanne as I semi passed out on the toilet were..

"Jeanne I want you to know I love you, and I want you to re-marry if anything happens to me."

  she replied..

"Do you want me to call 911 ?"

Duke, ROFL!  I gotta check things before i post better......  I am planing on spLitting some tonight..... Whistling

Kieth, glad you are felling better!  That pup is sure growing...  He looks like a real sweetie.

I chopped up a pile of small branches I had laying around on the back porch today.  They will be used for kindling in the wood stove come the cold seasons...  I also picked up and stacked all the 2 x 4 amd 2 x 2 shims I use under the wood pile (to improve circulation).  Tonight I will sweep and shovel up the bits of wood and bark, etc. on the floor, and get ready for some firewood.  Have to get THAT done before I can split and stack the wood.  I have also been w*rking on the laundry which means.....  Yep had a bit of time to w*rk on the layout.  Got to go!  later!

Good afternoon, folks.   Mid 80s and humid here today.   A slow and lazy day here.   I've done exactly nothing so far.  I'm trying to get motivated to get back on the CAD system to work on the stowable train table idea I had.  I spent most of yesterday working on it...thought I had it...then ran into a problem that I've not worked around yet.

Heartland Division CB&Q

Zandoz ... Did the 6 year old get you with the water balloon arsenal?

I managed to dodge that liquid bullit...wife, step daughter and the 6yo decided to go shopping instead.   Seeing the water balloons are still here for another day, and the cost of said shopping trip, I'd probably been better off taking a few direct hits...LOL

Reality...an interesting concept with no successful applications, that should always be accompanied by a "Do not try this at home" warning.

Hundreds of years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...But the world may be different because I did something so bafflingly crazy that my ruins become a tourist attraction.

"Oooh...ahhhh...that's how this all starts...but then there's running...and screaming..."

 Good afternoon.

Worked on my layout a bit today.  Got a new building in place, and made the hotel look like its boarded up.  I still got a lot to do to that area.  Maybe do some more to it later this week.  Sorry about the picture being blurry Whistling

Jeff.........Looks like we have the same "chief".   Man talk about a "haul" from your layout to mine.

First off, Sign - Welcome to the diner CudaKen!!---those dogs are really cute.

Duke ... glad to see you, but you were here only for a split second.

Zandoz ... glad you dodged the wet bullet.

Keith ... glad your back in the diner.

I repaiered a "basket case" Shinohara double crossover today. Somebody gave it to me, and it was really messed up. The article in current edition of MR about trunouts did help. I had to do a little more though. One of the switch point assemblies needed to be re-soldered. ... Anyhow, it's now all back together and in guage. Electrical contacts are fixed. ....  I'll be using this for my Union Station tracks. I do like getting things for free. I think a new one would retail for about $60.00.

We got THAT nasty stuff around here now.  Seneca County (Directly to the East) is loaded with it.  The Ranger at Boy Scout Camp is pretty vigilant about keeping it  out of camp... but once in a while....  There is a patch along the road about a mile from my son's house and there is a bit just outside of Geneva in Ontario County.  When it first appeared around here a man mowing for Seneca County along a roadside got into some and spent a week or so in the hospital!  Yeah, nasty, nasty, stuff!!!Shock

Our local paper, The Finger Lakes Crimes Times is again sponsoring a Photo Contest each week.  They started back up about a month ago after not doing it for most of a year.  I happened to walk by some Oregano in my herb garden THAT is currently in blossom and was amazed at the different insects feeding on it.  I ran back in the house, switched out my 18-85mm lens for my 100mm medium telephoto and took some shots.  I was sure the butterfly would be gone by the time I got back out there.  Let me know which of these I should send in as this weeks entry....

Or maybe a bee?

Later!

Hello Diners,

(by Ulrich) The MIA list is getting longer and longer - John, Keith, Bama, Sam, Jim (well, he does occasionally drop by), Calif. Tom has not shown up for quite some time now, Jerry is missing also. Is it just summer holidays?
I have an explanation, I really do! I was on a trip to the annual Conference of our Association of Churches. It was in North Bay, Ontario, and the internet in the hotel was down, I had no transportation to go find an internet café, and the one time I got time on some-one's laptop it was only long enough to cull the 99 emails on my ISP's server down to 47 or so I needed to see later!  Actually I had been MIA for a while before the conference - and had been busy on getting the buildings that cover the upper level reverse loop more or less tidy and operational before I left for North Bay.  You can't see a lot of difference between this and the parking garage base of the office tower, but in fact it was a time consuming project; and it's still not complete. That building in back of the tan coloured hotel has lots of angles, to say nothing of the hotel wall being fiddled out at an angle to meet it.The brick wall with concrete pilasters will extend as a two-dimensional scenic block under the taller office tower and further hide the view of trains on the reverse loop when looked at from more to the right of where this shot was taken. I have to finish the street side of that complex, add the Parking signs, and suggest an entrance, and so on. ( but then I have to make the street too, as it's just blue foam right now Blindfold )  Once that's done, I have the fore-ground massive industrial buildings (flour mill/bakery) to scratch build. I think I'll lower their profile a bit while I'm at it. (The card with the paper clip is part of the present mock-up for those, and more shows in the "this" photo)

While I was away, Rosie-the-Dog died in her sleep Thursday. Kris found her when she took her morning snack. Our neighbour kindly dug a hole in the very rocky ground near her house, and she is safely inured.  We talked over some time ago if we would look to having another dog, and we won't, for one thing we will have to move on from here before too many years pass, and having a dog makes finding some-where else that touch more complicated.  So, RIP Rosie.

I've found the file I was building before I went AWOL - back near Page 11 I think...

Sawyer:

I have no idea, it's by an author who lives here in SC in Charleston.
Well, not yet, you might not; but it would be interesting to see if there is a connection ( to the song "The Water is Wide") once you've read it.  Laugh Enjoy the summer!

Chris: How very typical of the Beurocratic mind to try to legislate something like fruit and veggies as mandatory on a daily basis!  Nuts!...or should we include those too? Clown  BTW, I think the less trans fats eaten the better - and don't mind limitation on their inclusion in manufactured foods.  But, I agree, Ulrich would do well to read the regulatory fine print in ANY country where he and Petra might set up shop.My 2 cents

Ulrich:

Germany does not have much of a history of rebellion. The German revolution of 1848 lasted only for a short term, until they called the king back.
sounds very like Canada!  Of course, we still have the monarchy, which is very handy because we are not brought to a stand-still every 4 years for the election of Presidents of dubious value. On the whole a LOT cheaper! Approve.  Nova Scotia could do with more first class German bakeries. Just a thoughtWhistling

Todd: On the concrete - I usually start with what the $ Store Acrylics call "Sandstone Grey"  ...and then darken from there with "Storm Cloud Grey" or even a tiny bit of black, and so on. It surprises me how often some dark green tinged in (if Chris's THAT would allow "Tinge" as a verb Shock) improves the look too. My 2 cents

Looks like it's time for me to get some tea.  Doubt if I'll be back in today, so I'll say Sign - Welcome to some new folks; and Goodnight all, God Bless. Prayers for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

Good evening...plate of cheeseburgers, plate of fries cooked in beef fat and with salt applied, and a bucket of Cherry RC Cola please 'n thank-you...yup, at the RC if you would.

RAY: THIS newspaper photographer likes the first butterfly shot, and the first bee shot. I might be inclined to crop-in a bit on the bee pic. Then again, THAT tells me I crop too much...Whistling Nice shootin' Pally!Thumbs Up

JOHN: Very sorry to hear about Rosie...news like that always give me a moment of pause, and moves me to go find Rerun and give him an extra hug.

I'm going to try to stay off of the soapbox (which is already idling in the corner...), but I just wish the food ***, nanny-staters, and self-appointed do-gooders would just stay OUT of my food. I didn't even know what a "trans fat" was until they started banning them. Coke tasted much better in the 70s and 80s, McDonald's fries were THE best when they cooked 'em in the beef fat and salted the heck out of 'em. I've noticed THAT I'm dumping MORE salt into food to get it to taste "like it used to." Is it good for me? Probably not. My sole concern with food is FLAVOR and filling my guts. IF it ultimately does me in...at least I wasn't slogging through a plate of styrofoam, cardboard, soybean paste, and tofu...  I fear we are in a time of increased regulation, decreased liberty, and much greater involvement of others into our personal lives...and I don't like it one bit!!! (shooing the soapbox back into the corner).

 *sigh*

In other news and views from Clarence...I see the daily newspaper in Clinton is looking for a photographer. The ad doesn't say anything about needing the "right" piece of paper in order to be considered...so I'm considering seeing if they'd take me away from THAT.

Much cogitation ahead of me this evening...

Evening. Slow night at work yet busy.

Hey Keith!! I thought maybe something might be amiss, you generally aren't gone that long. You take care of yourself and don't worry, you aren't being left in the dust by me! Most of my talk is of PLANS and HOPES, what I actually get accomplished is a much different story.

Ken- OK, gotta face to a name now. Somehow I expected you to be a bit scruffySmile,Wink, & Grin. Fellow MOPAR guy don'tcha know!! Being one of ‘em I know the typeLaugh. Good looking family, I am a sucker for dogs. Say is that an Irish Wolfhound or Scottish Deerhound? My cousin raises the latter and I can't really tell the difference

I see Ray is mad..... Oh, splitting. OK, now we've gone through this before, but I'm gonna offer my opinion anyway. I like the first one the best.

John- I'm so sorry about Rosie. Sadness fills me, but my prayers for comfort go out to you and Kris. It seems Chris and I have the same reactions. Thanks for the tip on the concrete too, now I have several things to try.

Rob- Don't mean to burst you're bubble, but not too long ago I heard where grilled food, you know, the stuff not cooked in fat and the excess fat (flavor) drains away, is now bad for you. (ooops, hope Chris didn't hear that). So do't spread it around about your BBQ for the layout.

Let's see, no eggs, no red meat, no pork (it has worms unless cooked to death) can't irradiate, chicken is full of salamander poison, vegetables are full of pesticides and too much fruit gives you the runs. Maybe I'll try dirt pies again. My taste buds may have changed.

So far in my life, I have unintentionally rolled, laid, walked through and fallen into Poison Ivy and Oak too many times to count and have yet to have a reaction. My Grandfather was not allergic to the stuff and I may have been blessed with the same. However, I will not grab it with my bare hands and pull it out like he did. No use pushing the envelope.

Whatever happened to Chocodiles. Mana I tell you, Mana.

Prayers for those in need.

Good Evening Diners!

Der, so sorry to hear about Rosie's passing. It is never easy but at least it seems it was a peaceful one. Oh, and Pippa and Robbie send their condolences too. Last year when we got Robbie we had thought a lot about getting another dog and the complications but decided that we had to consider the years between now and when we may move and came to the conclusion that we would rather deal with that and enjoy having a critter now.

Well the harbour now has water!! or at least the Woodland Scenics version of it. The harbour is 25"x6" and took 2 pours plus a little touch-up for the area where I managed to stick my hand before it had set. Luckily it was right beside the dock so I just stuck the barge on top. Over all I am fairly pleased with it but find that it is just too glass smooth to represent realistic water surface. I tried using a hair dryer on it before it had set completely and got some ripples that looked quite good but it just settled all back out.

I need to add some details, shrubs and a few trees to the area around the lighthouse but think I will put in the street lights first for a change of pace. Seems like the harbour is taking forever to get done but it isn't a race and besides, if it is done, what will I do next?

Welcome Cuda Ken! Have always enjoyed your posts and as we both started into the hobby about the same time, it has been educational too and sometimes amusing, if I may be so bold. Dogs and model railroading, what could be better? We have 2 Westies, one just about 16 years old and a one year old. As someone once said they are a lot of dog in a small package.

The weather here has been a pleasant mid '20sC, so I guess about 75F. Tomorrow it is supposed to be cloudy with showers so I might get that bedroom painting job done that I have been putting off for over a year. As this is the last week of my holidays, I better get at it.

Well, fair winds and a beam reach as the sailors say,

CN Charlie

Ray,  your pics of nature caught my eye.  A nice photo session for me waking up.  I know here on the west coast, if you plant bushes that butterflies like,  they will lay their eggs and every generation from then on,  returns to that bush.  I only have two bushes, but this year one has returned.  Only one.. but its a start~

Garry,  nice to see you too interest in the photo.  It was meant for Der John, and well..  its just a trailer photo of a very old Sci Fi movie.

1962  Atlantis, The Lost Continent.  I think Todd, Rob, and Der John were lightly talking over Non Prototypical. or Atypical prototype.    Oh just talking about a Soylent Green Factory or a Stargate ring.

And I said basically,  "in some small area place a StarGate ring"  Only 4 inches tall.

or maybe some lost civilazation like Atlantis."  Who knows how what I'll place there.

Ask me again after I've finished my first cup of coffee.

Todd, Now here's one that left me in "Zero Time".

To look at this.. well I'll have to follow up on it.. but this is a multi-level staging area with many levels.   But to even imagine what I was doing.. well it left me dazed.  More to follow up I'm sure.  But just try to imagine building different levels.   Main #1 being the newest and highest.. and going lower for the 'Old Main' # 2,  then going to lower to the yard line.  We'll see how it all turns out.  Now where's my chain saw?

Rob.. there was something.. but I am forgetting it now.. ~.. lol.

bye

Good morning all, Catching up…. Robby nice job on the layout! Zandoz, Welcome to the diner! The ping-pong table will work if you have removable 6” sections of track at the fold joints.

Just a simple question, in the next few days.. I'll be laying down some track.  Those turnouts/switches seem to travel against the cork roadbed.  When applying pressure on the tracks, the switch seems a bit tight as if its rubbing on the cork.  Is there a problem I will need to address?  Do I need to worry?  Cut some cork? AnyONe?  please?

thx

 Good Afternoon,

still too hot - the little ra*n we had yesterday had no effect other than to increase humidity Dead

Janie, I am going for a regular RBF, please.

Keith - maybe you should sand down the cork a little so it is all  plane. I know it is a bit of a messy job, but I have always done that and nver had a problem with my trackwork.

Take care of your kidney infection, Keith - that´s something, which should not be taken lightly. I had one on my 12th birthday and still get a reminder of it, now and then.

Ray - I also like the first picture (that´s why you put it up front Big Smile) The "bee" picture needs a little cropping.

John - I am sorry to read about your dog´s passing.  She was such a cute one!

So the MIA list could be reduced a little, but still no word from Jerry, Sam or Bama. I hope, everything is OK with them!

I´ll be back a little later!

Keith: Sand away some of the cork that will be under the movable parts of the turnouts. I used to have to do that to insure free motion back when I was using flex track on cork.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'm a bit late arriving for breakfast this morning.  I'll have a blueberry muffin to go along with my dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug!

Thank you to those of you who advised on the photos.  Looks Like I will most probably send in the first photo.  I also really like #3, but the butterfly shows up better on #1.  The first bee photo has already been cropped and if cropped too much further would not be chosen as it would have the resolution they like for printing.....  I'll see if I can get some more photos while the oregano is still in blossom.

I checked and the noxious weed we have along the roadside is similar to Hogweed but is actually "wild Parsnip".  Looks the same as Hogweed but is smaller.  Gives the same reaction if you get the sap on your skin.  It stops the skins natural protection to sunlight and will cause serious sunburn with scaring....  In NYS the DEC wants to know anytime a homeowner has either weed come up.  They are constantly trying to get rid of the stuff.

I will be heading out to camp (Boy Scout) this afternoon to spend a few hours with Troop 1.  May get some more RR Merit Badge items checked off.

Later!
